Add name field to struct pmu_metrics_table and populate it in generated
tables. Add pmu_metrics_table__name() to retrieve the name. Add
pmu_metrics_table__for_each_table() to iterate over all known metric
tables.
This will be used to break apart slow metric tests per table.

Make jevents.py generate C code that complies with formatting tools:
- Add /* clang-format off */ before big_c_string and re-enable it
after system mapping tables, bypassing large generated tables while
checking functions and early structs.
- Make comments more human readable and avoid going over 100 character
line length.
- Fix spaces indentation to tabs in struct/array initializers.
- Fix other checkpatch detected related issues.

Update `metric.py` to support the new `aggr_nr` keyword in the python
metric generator. Replace the usage of `source_count` with `aggr_nr` in
`IntelMissLat` inside `intel_metrics.py` so that uncore latency metrics
(like `lpm_miss_lat`) scale correctly on multi-socket and SNC systems when
aggregated globally.
Additionally, update the validation bypass logic in `CheckEveryEvent()`
inside `metric.py` to whitelist 'cha' and 'uncore' events. This
prevents validation failures when compiling metrics referencing these
PMU-specific uncore events.

Add IOMMU Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) and interrupt cache metrics
to perf jevents for Intel platforms. This enhances I/O performance
observability, allowing fleet-wide monitoring of IOMMU overhead.
These metrics are supported on platforms that expose the required uncore
IIO IOMMU events (such as Emerald Rapids and Granite Rapids).
The Intel implementation dynamically detects event availability at
generation time.
It requires at least the TLB events to expose the metric group, while
the interrupt cache events are optional. This allows platforms like
Emerald Rapids, which lack IOMMU interrupt cache events, to still expose
the IOMMU TLB metrics.
The following metrics are added:
- iotlb_total_hit: Total IOTLB hits (4K, 2M, 1G pages).
- iotlb_total_miss: Total IOTLB misses.
- iotlb_miss_rate: IOTLB miss rate.
- iotlb_interrupt_cache_hit: Interrupt cache hits.
- iotlb_interrupt_cache_miss: Interrupt cache misses (calculated as
lookup - hit, clamped to zero).
- iotlb_interrupt_cache_lookup: Interrupt cache lookups.
- iotlb_interrupt_cache_miss_rate: Interrupt cache miss rate.
Tested:
# perf stat -M \

Add IOMMU Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) and interrupt cache metrics
to perf jevents for AMD platforms. This enhances I/O performance
observability, allowing fleet-wide monitoring of IOMMU overhead.
These metrics are supported on Zen 2 and newer processors (Rome, Milan,
Genoa, Turin) and are implemented using the standard `amd_iommu` PMU
events. The implementation uses the existing `_zen_model` helper to
ensure these are only generated for Zen 2+. Note that the pde events on
AMD cover both 2M and 1G pages, so 1G pages are implicitly included in
the total hits/misses metrics (sum of pte and pde events).
The following metrics are added:
- iotlb_total_hit: Total IOTLB hits (4K, 2M, 1G pages).
- iotlb_total_miss: Total IOTLB misses.
- iotlb_miss_rate: IOTLB miss rate.

In pmu-events/Build, ZENS, ARMS, and INTELS were assigned using recursive
assignment (=), and model_name/vendor_name were evaluated using shell
macros (echo ... | sed ...).
Because these variables were expanded inside the COPY_RULE dependency
evaluation loop across hundreds of PMU JSON files and inside every metric
generation recipe, Kbuild continuously re-executed 'ls', 'grep', and 'sed'
shell forks thousands of times during AST parsing and execution.
Convert ZENS, ARMS, and INTELS to simply expanded variables (:=) and
replace model_name/vendor_name with pure GNU Make string functions. This
guarantees Make executes directory probing shell forks exactly once when
the Build file is parsed and evaluates path macros purely in memory,
completely eliminating over 7,800 redundant sub-processes during build
startup.

Currently, jevents.py emits both the massive 2.8 MB big_c_string literal
and tens of thousands of compact_pmu_event struct arrays into a single
pmu-events.c compilation unit. Compiling this giant file takes ~2.2 seconds
on a single CPU core during Kbuild startup.
Refactor jevents.py to emit big_c_string into a dedicated
pmu-events-string.c compilation unit. This allows Kbuild to compile
pmu-events.o and pmu-events-string.o simultaneously in parallel across
two separate CPU cores, preserving 100% string deduplication and zero
dynamic ELF relocations while cutting C compilation latency in half.
Add pmu-events-string.c to tools/perf/.gitignore to ensure in-tree Kbuild
runs do not leave untracked generated files in the working directory.
To guarantee 100% backward compatibility with GNU Make 4.0+ (avoiding the
Make 4.3+ grouped target &: syntax which causes older Make versions like
4.2.1 to spawn multiple concurrent jevents.py processes during parallel
builds), implement a robust dependency chaining pattern:
$(PMU_EVENTS_C): $(JEVENTS_DEPS)
$(PMU_EVENTS_STRING_C): $(PMU_EVENTS_C)
@:
This ensures jevents.py is invoked exactly once. If jevents.py aborts
early, Make's .DELETE_ON_ERROR: purges pmu-events.c, guaranteeing that
subsequent Make invocations correctly re-execute the script and overwrite
pmu-events-string.c. In jevents.py, explicitly close output_file first
and output_string_file second at the tail of main() to guarantee that
pmu-events-string.c receives a filesystem timestamp greater than or equal
to pmu-events.c, completely avoiding redundant incremental rebuilds.

l2_itlb_misses is a valid legacy cache event name, hence allowing it
in all_events in metric.py. l2_itlb_misses was also a json event for
AMD zen1, zen2 and zen3.
For zen4, zen5 and zen6 the checking that metric events are within the
json was skipping l2_itlb_misses as it is a valid legacy event, however,
the PMU driver lacks the event mapping causing it to be a bad event when
used in the metric.
Add bp_l1_tlb_miss_l2_tlb_miss.all as the l2 itlb miss event (bp =
branch predictor, the AMD way to say itlb), so that is used in
preference to l2_itlb_misses when the event exists.
Remove l2_itlb_misses from metric.py as the legacy event isn't used by
any metrics and having it is error prone for newer AMD zen models.

Turns out that displaying "RM $^" via quiet_cmd_rm can also upset the
shell and cause it to display "argument list too long".
Trying to quote $^ doesn't help.
In the end, *not* displaying the (potentially long) list of files is
probably the right thing to do for a "quiet" message, anyway. Instead,
let's display a count of how many files were removed. There is always
V=1 if more detail is required.
TEST linux/tools/perf/pmu-events/metric_test.log
RM ...634 orphan file(s)...
LD linux/tools/perf/util/perf-util-in.o

The metric code uses the event parsing code but it generally assumes
all events are supported. Arnaldo reported AMD supporting
stalled-cycles-frontend but not stalled-cycles-backend [1]. An issue
with this is that before parsing happens the metric code tries to
share events within groups to reduce the number of events and
multiplexing. If the group has some supported and not supported
events, the whole group will become broken. To avoid this situation
add has_event tests to the metrics for stalled-cycles-frontend and
stalled-cycles-backend. has_events is evaluated when parsing the
metric and its result constant propagated (with if-elses) to reduce
the number of events. This means when the metric code considers
sharing the events, only supported events will be shared.
Note for backporting. This change updates
tools/perf/pmu-events/empty-pmu-events.c a convenience file for builds
on systems without python present. While the metrics.json code should
backport easily there can be conflicts on empty-pmu-events.c. In this
case the build will have left a file test-empty-pmu-events.c that can
be copied over empty-pmu-events.c to resolve issues and make an
appropriate empty-pmu-events.c for the json in the source tree at the
time of the build.

Due to a recent change, building perf may result in a build error when
it is trying to "prune orphans".
The file list passed to "rm" may exceed what the shell can handle.
The build will then abort with an error like this:

Processing the arguments via "xargs", instead of passing the list of

When building to an output directory the previous code would remove
files and then copy the source files over.
Each source file copy would have a rule to make its directory. All JSON
for every architecture was considered a source file.
This led to unnecessary copying as a file would be deleted and then the
same file copied again, unnecessary directory making, and copying of
files not used in the build.
A side-effect would be a lot of build messages.
This change makes it so that all computed output files are created and
then compared to all files in the OUTPUT directory.
By filtering out the files that would be copied, unnecessary files can
be determined and then deleted - note, this is a phony target which
would remake the pmu-events.c if always depended upon, and so the
dependency is conditional on there being files to remove.
This has some overhead as the $(OUTPUT)/pmu-events is "find" over rather
than just "rm -fr", but the savings from unnecessary copying, etc.
should make up for this new make overhead.
The copy target just does copying but has a dependency on the directory
it needs being built, avoiding repetitive mkdirs.
The source files for copying only consider the JEVENTS_ARCH unless the
JEVENTS_ARCH is all.
The metric JSON is only generated if appropriate, rather than always
being generated and jevents.py deciding whether or not to use the files.
The mypy and pylint targets are fixed as variable names had changed but
the rules not updated.
The line count of a build with "make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/perf clean all"
prior to this change was 2181 lines, after this change it is 1596
lines.
This is a reduction of 585 lines or about 27%.
The generated pmu-events.c for JEVENTS_ARCH "x86" and "all" were
validated as being identical after this change.
