msm_dp_display_mode_valid() halves the pixel clock when either YUV420 or
wide bus is in use, then uses that halved value both for the controller
pixel clock limit and for the DP link bandwidth check.
Only YUV420 halves the data crossing the link. Wide bus widens the
internal DPU to DP interface to two pixels per clock, halving the
controller clock. Every pixel is still transmitted, so the link
bandwidth requirement remains.
As a result, modes needing up to twice the available link bandwidth pass
validation. On the IMDT QCS8550 SBC (rev5 with CYPD6125), where DP runs
over USB-C alt mode where only two lanes are available, 3840x2160@60 was
accepted despite needing 9.6 Gbps against the 8.64 Gbps the link can
carry.
Use a separate link pixel clock that is only halved for YUV420 for the
bandwidth calculation, leaving the wide bus halving to apply solely to
the controller pixel clock limit. With this, 4k@60 is correctly rejected
and 4k@30 selected instead.

msm_dp_display_atomic_enable() returns early when link training fails,
leaving ->power_on false and the main link down.
msm_dp_display_atomic_disable() nevertheless writes DP_STATE_CTRL_PUSH_IDLE
and waits for an idle-pattern completion that cannot arrive, so every failed
enable is followed by "PUSH_IDLE pattern timedout".
Every other step of the teardown is already gated on that flag:
msm_dp_display_disable(), called from .atomic_post_disable(), returns early
on !power_on. The PUSH_IDLE write is the only one that is not, so the
controller's runtime-PM reference is then dropped without the link having
been taken down.
On glymur (Snapdragon X2 Elite) the consequence is not a warning. The SoC
does not survive it: TrustZone force-stops the SOCCP and ADSP remote
processors and the machine resets silently about 50 ms later, with no oops
and no panic. On an ASUS Zenbook A16 (UX3607OA), whose eDP panel does not
currently train, this reproduces without any compositor or GPU involvement:
# eDP enable has already failed with "Failed link training (rc=-104)"
echo 1 > /sys/class/graphics/fb0/blank

Gate the PUSH_IDLE write on ->power_on so the disable path is consistent
with the rest of the teardown. With this applied the same sequence is
harmless and the machine stays up; without it, it resets every time.
The unconditional write dates back to the original DP driver
(c943b4948b ("drm/msm/dp: add displayPort driver support")), but the
surrounding code has been restructured several times since, so no Fixes:
tag is offered.
Note that the eDP link-training failure that exposes this on the A16 is a
separate problem in the glymur eDP PHY and is reported separately; this
change is about not damaging the machine when training fails, for whatever
reason.
Tested on ASUS Zenbook A16 (UX3607OA), Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme, on
linux-next next-20260803 and next-20260807. The machine has since been

The bridge .mode_set() callback is deprecated. Remove it and move the
mode setup logic to .atomic_pre_enable(), where the adjusted_mode is
available from the atomic CRTC state.
.atomic_pre_enable() is used rather than .atomic_enable() because the DPU
encoder's .atomic_enable() reads the output mode's YUV420 / wide bus
state through the msm_display callbacks, and it runs after all bridges'
.atomic_pre_enable() but before their .atomic_enable(). Programming the
mode from the DP bridge's .atomic_enable() would leave the encoder
reading the previously committed mode's state.
Drop msm_dp_mode from msm_dp_display_private and store the mode directly
in the panel, as it was only used as a temporary cache.

msm_dp_bridge_mode_valid() halves the candidate mode's pixel clock when
the sink either uses YUV 420 output or drives the wide bus, so that modes
relying on those to stay under DP_MAX_PIXEL_CLK_KHZ are accepted. The
wide bus part is queried through msm_dp_wide_bus_available(), which
returns false whenever the currently committed mode uses YUV 420 output:
it inspects the stored msm_dp_mode.out_fmt_is_yuv_420 of the active mode,
not the mode being validated.
Consequently, while a YUV 420 mode is active, an RGB mode that needs the
wide bus to fit under DP_MAX_PIXEL_CLK_KHZ has its pixel clock left
un-halved and is wrongly rejected as MODE_CLOCK_HIGH.
The candidate mode's YUV 420 status is already evaluated as is_yuv_420,
and the wide bus is disabled precisely for YUV 420 output, so halving the
pixel clock for either case is equivalent to halving it when the
candidate is YUV 420 or the controller supports the wide bus. Test
wide_bus_supported directly, so the decision no longer depends on the
format of the active mode.

DP conveys YUV 420 colorimetry through a VSC SDP. A sink that advertises
a mode as YUV-420-only therefore cannot be driven at all unless the panel
supports VSC SDP, yet msm_dp_bridge_mode_valid() only used the VSC SDP
capability to decide whether to halve the pixel clock, otherwise letting
such modes through to be validated (and possibly accepted) at the full
RGB clock the sink cannot display.
Reject 420-only modes with MODE_NO_420 when the panel does not support
VSC SDP. With those modes filtered out, being a 420-only mode implies VSC
SDP support, so the YUV-420 test reduces to drm_mode_is_420_only(): drop
msm_dp_is_yuv_420_enabled() and call the DRM helper directly at its two
callers (the DPU encoder already has the connector from the atomic state).

Handling of the HPD events in the MSM DP driver is plagued with lots of
problems. It tries to work aside of the main DRM framework, handling the
HPD signals on its own. There are two separate paths, one for the HPD
signals coming from the DP HPD pin and another path for signals coming
from outside (e.g. from the Type-C AltMode). It lies about the connected
state, returning the link established state instead. It is not easy to
understand or modify it. Having a separate event machine doesn't add
extra clarity.
Drop the whole event machine. When the DP receives a HPD event, send it
to the DRM core. Then handle the events in the hpd_notify callback,

The KMS framework uses two slightly different definitions for the state
concept. For a given object (plane, CRTC, encoder, etc., so
drm_$OBJECT_state), the state is the entire state of that object.
However, at the device level, drm_atomic_state refers to a state update
for a limited number of objects.
Thus, drm_atomic_state isn't the entire device state, but only the full
state of some objects in that device. This has been an endless source of
confusion and thus bugs.
We can rename the drm_atomic_state structure to drm_atomic_commit to
make it less confusing.
This patch was created using:
rg -l drm_atomic_state | \
xargs sed -i 's/drm_atomic_state/drm_atomic_commit/g; s/drm_atomic_commit_helper/drm_atomic_state_helper/g'
mv drivers/gpu/drm/tests/drm_atomic_state_test.c drivers/gpu/drm/tests/drm_atomic_commit_test.c

The drm/msm module bundles several drivers, each of them having a
separate OF match table, however only MDSS (subsystem), KMS devices and
GPU have corresponding MODULE_DEVICE_ID tables.
Add MODULE_DEVICE_ID to the display-related driver and to all other

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

An (admittedly problematic) optimization change in LLVM 20 [1] turns
known division by zero into the equivalent of __builtin_unreachable(),
which invokes undefined behavior if it is encountered in a control flow
graph, destroying code generation. When compile testing for x86_64,
objtool flags an instance of this optimization triggering in
msm_dp_ctrl_config_msa(), inlined into msm_dp_ctrl_on_stream():
drivers/gpu/drm/msm/msm.o: warning: objtool: msm_dp_ctrl_on_stream(): unexpected end of section .text.msm_dp_ctrl_on_stream
The zero division happens if the else branch in the first if statement
in msm_dp_ctrl_config_msa() is taken because pixel_div is initialized to
zero and it is not possible for LLVM to eliminate the else branch since
rate is still not known after inlining into msm_dp_ctrl_on_stream().
Transform the if statements into a switch statement with a default case
with the existing error print and an early return to avoid the invalid
division. Add a comment to note this helps the compiler, even though the
case is known to be unreachable. With this, pixel_dev's default zero
initialization can be dropped, as it is dead with this change.

The MSM DRM driver currently does not support panels which report their
supported link rates via the SUPPORTED_LINK_RATES table.
For panels which do not offer the optional eDP v1.3 fallback via
MAX_LINK_RATE, this will cause a panel probe failure (e.g. Samsung
ATNA30DW01-1 as found in Microsoft Surface Pro 11).
Detect eDP v1.4 panels and parse the SUPPORTED_LINK_RATES table when
present.
Additionally, set the rate using LINK_RATE_SET instead of LINK_BW_SET,
but only if LINK_BW_SET hasn't already been written to.
