This commit introduces core infrastructure for handling GSP command and
message queues in the nova-core driver. The command queue system enables
bidirectional communication between the host driver and GSP firmware
through a remote message passing interface.
The interface is based on passing serialised data structures over a ring
buffer with separate transmit and receive queues. Commands are sent by
writing to the CPU transmit queue and waiting for completion via the
receive queue.
To ensure safety mutable or immutable (depending on whether it is a send
or receive operation) references are taken on the command queue when
allocating the message to write/read to. This ensures message memory
remains valid and the command queue can't be mutated whilst an operation
is in progress.
Currently this is only used by the probe() routine and therefore can
only used by a single thread of execution. Locking to enable safe access
from multiple threads will be introduced in a future series when that
becomes necessary.

There are times where we need to store a constant value defined as a
larger type (e.g. through a binding) into a smaller type, knowing
that the value will fit. Rust, unfortunately, only provides us with the
`as` operator for that purpose, the use of which is discouraged as it
silently strips data.
Extend the `num` module with functions allowing to perform the
conversion infallibly, at compile time.
Example:
const FOO_VALUE: u32 = 1;
// `FOO_VALUE` fits into a `u8`, so the conversion is valid.
let foo = num::u32_to_u8::<{ FOO_VALUE }>();
We are going to use this feature extensively in Nova.

Compute more of the required FB layout information to boot the GSP
firmware.
This information is dependent on the firmware itself, so first we need
to import and abstract the required firmware bindings in the `nvfw`
module.
Then, a new FB HAL method is introduced in `fb::hal` that uses these
bindings and hardware information to compute the correct layout
information.
This information is then used in `fb` and the result made visible in
`FbLayout`.
These 3 things are grouped into the same patch to avoid lots of unused
warnings that would be tedious to work around. As they happen in
different files, they should not be too difficult to track separately.

The core library's `From` implementations do not cover conversions
that are not portable or future-proof. For instance, even though it is
safe today, `From<usize>` is not implemented for `u64` because of the
possibility to support larger-than-64bit architectures in the future.
However, the kernel supports a narrower set of architectures, and in the
case of Nova we only support 64-bit. This makes it helpful and desirable
to provide more infallible conversions, lest we need to rely on the `as`
keyword and carry the risk of silently losing data.
Thus, introduce a new module `num` that provides safe const functions
performing more conversions allowed by the build target, as well as
`FromSafeCast` and `IntoSafeCast` traits that are just extensions of
`From` and `Into` to conversions that are known to be lossless.

Guarantee that an auxiliary driver will be unbound before its parent is
unbound; there is no point in operating an auxiliary device whose parent
has been unbound.
In practice, this guarantee allows us to assume that for a bound
auxiliary device, also the parent device is bound.
This is useful when an auxiliary driver calls into its parent, since it
allows the parent to directly access device resources and its device
private data due to the guaranteed bound device context.

The driver model defines the lifetime of the private data stored in (and
owned by) a bus device to be valid from when the driver is bound to a
device (i.e. from successful probe()) until the driver is unbound from
the device.
This is already taken care of by the Rust implementation of the driver
model. However, we still ask drivers to return a Result<Pin<KBox<Self>>>
from probe().
Unlike in C, where we do not have the concept of initializers, but
rather deal with uninitialized memory, drivers can just return an
impl PinInit<Self, Error> instead.
This contributes to more clarity to the fact that a driver returns it's
device private data in probe() and the Rust driver model owns the data,
manages the lifetime and - considering the lifetime - provides (safe)
accessors for the driver.
Hence, let probe() functions return an impl PinInit<Self, Error> instead
of Result<Pin<KBox<Self>>>.

The getter method of a field works with the field type, but its setter
expects the type of the register. This leads to an asymmetry in the
From/Into implementations required for a field with a dedicated type.
For instance, a field declared as
pub struct ControlReg(u32) {
3:0 mode as u8 ?=> Mode;
...
}
currently requires the following implementations:
impl TryFrom<u8> for Mode {
...
}
impl From<Mode> for u32 {
...
}
Change this so the `From<Mode>` now needs to be implemented for `u8`,
i.e. the primitive type of the field. This is more consistent, and will
become a requirement once we start using the TryFrom/Into derive macros

Currently, the BiosImage type in vbios code is implemented as a
type-wrapping enum with the sole purpose of implementing a type that is
common to all specific image types. To make this work, macros were used
to overcome limitations of using enums. Ugly match statements were also
required to route methods from the enum type to the specific image type.
Simplify the code by just creating the common BiosImage type in the
iterator, and then converting it to specific image type after. This
works well since all the methods common to different BiosImage are
called only during the iteration and not later. Should we need to call
these common methods later, we can use AsRef and traits, but for now not
doing so gives us a nice ~50 negative line delta versus the existing
code and is a lot simpler.
Also remove the now obsolete BiosImage enum type.

Don't use unwrap() to extract an Option<SGEntry>, instead handle the
error condition gracefully.

Because nova-core depends on CONFIG_64BIT and a raw DmaAddress is
always a u64, we can remove the now actually useless conversion.

Interacting with the GSP currently requires using definitions from C
header files. Rust definitions for the types needed for Nova core will
be generated using the Rust bindgen tool. This patch adds the base
module to allow inclusion of the generated bindings. The generated
bindings themselves are added by subsequent patches when they are first
used.
Currently we only intend to support a single firmware version, 570.144,
with these bindings. Longer term we intend to move to a more stable GSP
interface that isn't tied to specific firmware versions.

The GSP bootloader is a small RISC-V firmware that is loaded by Booter
onto the GSP core and is in charge of loading, validating, and starting
the actual GSP firmware.
It is a regular binary firmware file containing a specific header.
Create a type holding the DMA-mapped firmware as well as useful
information extracted from the header, and hook it into our firmware
structure for later use.
The GSP bootloader is stored into the `GspFirmware` structure, since it
is part of the GSP firmware package. This makes the `Firmware` structure
empty, so remove it.

The GSP firmware is a binary blob that is verified, loaded, and run by
the GSP bootloader. Its presentation is a bit peculiar as the GSP
bootloader expects to be given a DMA address to a 3-levels page table
mapping the GSP firmware at address 0 of its own address space.
Prepare such a structure containing the DMA-mapped firmware as well as
the DMA-mapped page tables, and a way to obtain the DMA handle of the
level 0 page table.
Then, move the GSP firmware instance from the `Firmware` struct to the
`start_gsp` method since it doesn't need to be kept after the GSP is
booted.
As we are performing the required ELF section parsing and radix3 page
table building, remove these items from the TODO file.

When all the firmware files are loaded from `Firmware::new`, it makes
sense to have the firmware request code as a closure. However, since we

dedicated function that can be called by individual firmware types.

There are a few cases where we need the lowercase name of a given
chipset, notably to resolve firmware files paths for dynamic loading or
to build the module information.
So far, we relied on a static `NAMES` array for the latter, and some
CString hackery for the former.
Replace both with a new `name` const method that returns the lowercase
name of a chipset instance. We can generate it using the `paste!` macro.
Using this method removes the need to create a `CString` when loading
firmware, and lets us remove a couple of utility functions that now have
no user.

Right now the GSP boot code is very incomplete and limited to running
FRTS, so having it in `Gpu::new` is not a big constraint.
However, this will change as we add more steps of the GSP boot process,
and not all GPU families follow the same procedure, so having these
steps in a dedicated method is the logical construct.
There is also the fact the GSP will require its own runtime data, and
while it won't immediately need to be pinned, we want to be ready for
the time where it will - most likely when it starts using mutexes.
Thus, add an empty `Gsp` type that is pinned inside `Gpu` and
initialized using a pin initializer. This sets the constraint we need to
observe from the start, and could spare us some costly refactoring down
the road.
Then, move the code related to GSP boot to the `gsp::boot` module, as
part of the `Gsp` implementation.
Doing so allows us to make `Gpu::new` return a fallible `impl PinInit`
instead of a `Result.` This is more idiomatic when working with pinned
objects, and sets up the pinned initialization pattern we want to
preserve as the code grows more complex.

NovaCore has so far been too imprecise about figuring out if .probe()
has found a supported PCI PF (Physical Function). By that I mean:
.probe() sets up BAR0 (which involves a lot of very careful devres and
Device<Bound> details behind the scenes). And then if it is dealing with
a non-supported device such as the .1 audio PF on many GPUs, it fails
out due to an unexpected BAR0 size. We have been fortunate that the BAR0
sizes are different.
Really, we should be filtering on PCI class ID instead. These days I
think we can confidently pick out Nova's supported PF's via PCI class
ID. And if not, then we'll revisit.
The approach here is to filter on "Display VGA" or "Display 3D", which
is how PCI class IDs express "this is a modern GPU's PF".

Falcon DMA transfers are done in 256 bytes increments, and the method
responsible for initiating the transfer checked that the required length
was indeed a multiple of 256. While correct, this also requires callers
to specifically account for this limitation of DMA transfers, and we had
for instance the fwsec code performing a seemingly arbitrary (and
potentially overflowing) upwards alignment of the DMEM load size to
match this requirement.
Let's move that alignment into the loading code itself instead: since it
is working in terms of number of transfers, we can turn this upwards
alignment into a non-overflowing operation, and check that the requested
transfer remains into the limits of the DMA object. This also allows us
to remove a DMA-specific constant in the fwsec code.

Having registers that can be interpreted identically in a contiguous I/O
area (or at least, following a given stride) is a common way to organize
registers, and is used by NVIDIA hardware. Thus, add a way to simply and
safely declare such a layout using the register!() macro.
Build-time bound-checking is effective for array accesses performed with
a constant. For cases where the index cannot be known at compile time,
`try_` variants of the accessors are also made available that return
`EINVAL` if the access is out-of-bounds.

Falcon engines have two distinct register bases: `PFALCON` and
`PFALCON2`. So far we assumed that `PFALCON2` was located at `PFALCON +
0x1000` because that is the case of most engines, but there are
exceptions (NVDEC uses `0x1c00`).
Fix this shortcoming by leveraging the redesigned relative registers
definitions to assign a distinct `PFalcon2Base` base address to each
falcon engine.

The relative registers are currently very unsafe to use: callers can
specify any constant as the base address for access, meaning they can
effectively interpret any I/O address as any relative register.
Ideally, valid base addresses for a family of registers should be
explicitly defined in the code, and could only be used with the relevant
registers
This patch changes the relative register declaration from e.g.:
register!(CPU_CTL @ +0x0000010, "CPU core control" {
0:0 start as bool, "Start the CPU core";
});
into:
register!(CPU_CTL @ CpuCtlBase[0x10], "CPU core control" {
0:0 start as bool, "Start the CPU core";
});
Where `CpuCtlBase` is the name of a ZST used as a parameter of the
`RegisterBase<>` trait to define a trait unique to a class of register.
This specialized trait is then implemented for every type that provides
a valid base address, enabling said types to be passed as the base
address provider for the register's I/O accessor methods.
This design thus makes it impossible to pass an unexpected base address
to a relative register, and, since the valid bases are all known at
compile-time, also guarantees that all I/O accesses are done within the
valid bounds of the I/O range.

Fields are complex and cumbersome to match in a rule, and were only
captured in order to generate the field accessors. However, there are
other places (like the `Debug` and `Default` implementations) where we
would benefit from having access to at least some of the field
information, but refrained from doing so because it would have meant
matching the whole fields in a rule more complex than we need.
Introduce a new `@fields_dispatcher` internal rule that captures all the
field information and passes it to `@field_accessors`. It does not
provide any functional change in itself, but allows us to reuse the
captured field information partially to provide better `Debug` and
`Default` implementations in following patches.

Toolchain and infrastructure:
- Enable a set of Clippy lints: 'ptr_as_ptr', 'ptr_cast_constness',
'as_ptr_cast_mut', 'as_underscore', 'cast_lossless' and 'ref_as_ptr'.
These are intended to avoid type casts with the 'as' operator, which
are quite powerful, into restricted variants that are less powerful
and thus should help to avoid mistakes.
- Remove the 'author' key now that most instances were moved to the
plural one in the previous cycle.
'kernel' crate:
- New 'bug' module: add 'warn_on!' macro which reuses the existing
'BUG'/'WARN' infrastructure, i.e. it respects the usual sysctls and
kernel parameters:
warn_on!(value == 42);
To avoid duplicating the assembly code, the same strategy is followed
as for the static branch code in order to share the assembly between
both C and Rust. This required a few rearrangements on C arch headers
-- the existing C macros should still generate the same outputs, thus
no functional change expected there.
- 'workqueue' module: add delayed work items, including a 'DelayedWork'
struct, a 'impl_has_delayed_work!' macro and an 'enqueue_delayed'
method, e.g.:
/// Enqueue the struct for execution on the system workqueue,
/// where its value will be printed 42 jiffies later.
fn print_later(value: Arc<MyStruct>) {
let _ = workqueue::system().enqueue_delayed(value, 42);
}
- New 'bits' module: add support for 'bit' and 'genmask' functions,
with runtime- and compile-time variants, e.g.:
static_assert!(0b00010000 == bit_u8(4));
static_assert!(0b00011110 == genmask_u8(1..=4));
assert!(checked_bit_u32(u32::BITS).is_none());
- 'uaccess' module: add 'UserSliceReader::strcpy_into_buf', which reads
NUL-terminated strings from userspace into a '&CStr'.
Introduce 'UserPtr' newtype, similar in purpose to '__user' in C, to
minimize mistakes handling userspace pointers, including mixing them
up with integers and leaking them via the 'Debug' trait. Add it to
the prelude, too.
- Start preparations for the replacement of our custom 'CStr' type
with the analogous type in the 'core' standard library. This will
take place across several cycles to make it easier. For this one,
it includes a new 'fmt' module, using upstream method names and some
other cleanups.
Replace 'fmt!' with a re-export, which helps Clippy lint properly,
and clean up the found 'uninlined-format-args' instances.
- 'dma' module:
- Clarify wording and be consistent in 'coherent' nomenclature.
- Convert the 'read!()' and 'write!()' macros to return a 'Result'.
- Add 'as_slice()', 'write()' methods in 'CoherentAllocation'.
- Expose 'count()' and 'size()' in 'CoherentAllocation' and add the
corresponding type invariants.
- Implement 'CoherentAllocation::dma_handle_with_offset()'.
- 'time' module:
- Make 'Instant' generic over clock source. This allows the compiler
to assert that arithmetic expressions involving the 'Instant' use
'Instants' based on the same clock source.
- Make 'HrTimer' generic over the timer mode. 'HrTimer' timers take a
'Duration' or an 'Instant' when setting the expiry time, depending
on the timer mode. With this change, the compiler can check the
type matches the timer mode.
- Add an abstraction for 'fsleep'. 'fsleep' is a flexible sleep
function that will select an appropriate sleep method depending on
the requested sleep time.
- Avoid 64-bit divisions on 32-bit hardware when calculating
timestamps.
- Seal the 'HrTimerMode' trait. This prevents users of the
'HrTimerMode' from implementing the trait on their own types.
- Pass the correct timer mode ID to 'hrtimer_start_range_ns()'.
- 'list' module: remove 'OFFSET' constants, allowing to remove pointer
arithmetic; now 'impl_list_item!' invokes 'impl_has_list_links!' or
'impl_has_list_links_self_ptr!'. Other simplifications too.
- 'types' module: remove 'ForeignOwnable::PointedTo' in favor of a
constant, which avoids exposing the type of the opaque pointer, and
require 'into_foreign' to return non-null.
Remove the 'Either<L, R>' type as well. It is unused, and we want to
encourage the use of custom enums for concrete use cases.
- 'sync' module: implement 'Borrow' and 'BorrowMut' for 'Arc' types
to allow them to be used in generic APIs.
- 'alloc' module: implement 'Borrow' and 'BorrowMut' for 'Box<T, A>';
and 'Borrow', 'BorrowMut' and 'Default' for 'Vec<T, A>'.
- 'Opaque' type: add 'cast_from' method to perform a restricted cast
that cannot change the inner type and use it in callers of
'container_of!'. Rename 'raw_get' to 'cast_into' to match it.
- 'rbtree' module: add 'is_empty' method.
- 'sync' module: new 'aref' submodule to hold 'AlwaysRefCounted' and
'ARef', which are moved from the too general 'types' module which we
want to reduce or eventually remove. Also fix a safety comment in
'static_lock_class'.
'pin-init' crate:
- Add 'impl<T, E> [Pin]Init<T, E> for Result<T, E>', so results are now
(pin-)initializers.
- Add 'Zeroable::init_zeroed()' that delegates to 'init_zeroed()'.
- New 'zeroed()', a safe version of 'mem::zeroed()' and also provide
it via 'Zeroable::zeroed()'.
- Implement 'Zeroable' for 'Option<&T>', 'Option<&mut T>' and for
'Option<[unsafe] [extern "abi"] fn(...args...) -> ret>' for '"Rust"'
and '"C"' ABIs and up to 20 arguments.
- Changed blanket impls of 'Init' and 'PinInit' from 'impl<T, E>
[Pin]Init<T, E> for T' to 'impl<T> [Pin]Init<T> for T'.
- Renamed 'zeroed()' to 'init_zeroed()'.
- Upstream dev news: improve CI more to deny warnings, use
'--all-targets'. Check the synchronization status of the two '-next'
branches in upstream and the kernel.

- 'uaccess' module: add 'UserSliceReader::strcpy_into_buf', which
reads NUL-terminated strings from userspace into a '&CStr'
Introduce 'UserPtr' newtype, similar in purpose to '__user' in C,
to minimize mistakes handling userspace pointers, including mixing
them up with integers and leaking them via the 'Debug' trait. Add
it to the prelude, too
- Start preparations for the replacement of our custom 'CStr' type
with the analogous type in the 'core' standard library. This will
take place across several cycles to make it easier. For this one,
it includes a new 'fmt' module, using upstream method names and
some other cleanups
Replace 'fmt!' with a re-export, which helps Clippy lint properly,
and clean up the found 'uninlined-format-args' instances
- 'dma' module:
- Clarify wording and be consistent in 'coherent' nomenclature
- Convert the 'read!()' and 'write!()' macros to return a 'Result'
- Add 'as_slice()', 'write()' methods in 'CoherentAllocation'
- Expose 'count()' and 'size()' in 'CoherentAllocation' and add
the corresponding type invariants
- Implement 'CoherentAllocation::dma_handle_with_offset()'
- 'time' module:
- Make 'Instant' generic over clock source. This allows the
compiler to assert that arithmetic expressions involving the
'Instant' use 'Instants' based on the same clock source
- Make 'HrTimer' generic over the timer mode. 'HrTimer' timers
take a 'Duration' or an 'Instant' when setting the expiry time,
depending on the timer mode. With this change, the compiler can
check the type matches the timer mode
- Add an abstraction for 'fsleep'. 'fsleep' is a flexible sleep
function that will select an appropriate sleep method depending
on the requested sleep time
- Avoid 64-bit divisions on 32-bit hardware when calculating
timestamps
- Seal the 'HrTimerMode' trait. This prevents users of the
'HrTimerMode' from implementing the trait on their own types
- Pass the correct timer mode ID to 'hrtimer_start_range_ns()'
- 'list' module: remove 'OFFSET' constants, allowing to remove
pointer arithmetic; now 'impl_list_item!' invokes
'impl_has_list_links!' or 'impl_has_list_links_self_ptr!'. Other
simplifications too
- 'types' module: remove 'ForeignOwnable::PointedTo' in favor of a
constant, which avoids exposing the type of the opaque pointer, and
require 'into_foreign' to return non-null
Remove the 'Either<L, R>' type as well. It is unused, and we want
to encourage the use of custom enums for concrete use cases
- 'sync' module: implement 'Borrow' and 'BorrowMut' for 'Arc' types
to allow them to be used in generic APIs
- 'alloc' module: implement 'Borrow' and 'BorrowMut' for 'Box<T, A>';
and 'Borrow', 'BorrowMut' and 'Default' for 'Vec<T, A>'
- 'Opaque' type: add 'cast_from' method to perform a restricted cast
that cannot change the inner type and use it in callers of
'container_of!'. Rename 'raw_get' to 'cast_into' to match it
- 'rbtree' module: add 'is_empty' method
- 'sync' module: new 'aref' submodule to hold 'AlwaysRefCounted' and
'ARef', which are moved from the too general 'types' module which
we want to reduce or eventually remove. Also fix a safety comment
in 'static_lock_class'
'pin-init' crate:
- Add 'impl<T, E> [Pin]Init<T, E> for Result<T, E>', so results are
now (pin-)initializers
- Add 'Zeroable::init_zeroed()' that delegates to 'init_zeroed()'
- New 'zeroed()', a safe version of 'mem::zeroed()' and also provide
it via 'Zeroable::zeroed()'
- Implement 'Zeroable' for 'Option<&T>', 'Option<&mut T>' and for
'Option<[unsafe] [extern "abi"] fn(...args...) -> ret>' for
'"Rust"' and '"C"' ABIs and up to 20 arguments
- Changed blanket impls of 'Init' and 'PinInit' from 'impl<T, E>
[Pin]Init<T, E> for T' to 'impl<T> [Pin]Init<T> for T'
- Renamed 'zeroed()' to 'init_zeroed()'
- Upstream dev news: improve CI more to deny warnings, use
'--all-targets'. Check the synchronization status of the two
'-next' branches in upstream and the kernel

Thus fix them in the same commit. This could possibly be fixed in two

So far Devres uses an inner memory allocation and reference count, i.e.
an inner Arc, in order to ensure that the devres callback can't run into
a use-after-free in case where the Devres object is dropped while the
devres callback runs concurrently.
Instead, use a completion in order to avoid a potential UAF: In
Devres::drop(), if we detect that we can't remove the devres action
anymore, we wait for the completion that is completed from the devres
callback. If, in turn, we were able to successfully remove the devres
action, we can just go ahead.
This, again, allows us to get rid of the internal Arc, and instead let
Devres consume an `impl PinInit<T, E>` in order to return an
`impl PinInit<Devres<T>, E>`, which enables us to get away with less
memory allocations.
Additionally, having the resulting explicit synchronization in
Devres::drop() prevents potential subtle undesired side effects of the
devres callback dropping the final Arc reference asynchronously within
the devres callback.

Commit 38559da6af ("rust: module: introduce `authors` key") introduced
a new `authors` key to support multiple module authors, while keeping
the old `author` key for backward compatibility.
Now that most in-tree modules have migrated to `authors`, remove:
1. The deprecated `author` key support from the module macro
2. Legacy `author` entries from remaining modules

A few new dependencies are required to remove some of the TODO items:
- A way to safely convert from byte slices to types implementing
`FromBytes`,
- A way to obtain slices and write into a `CoherentAllocation`,
- Several improvements to the `register!()` macro,
- Alignment operations to powers of two, and an equivalent to the C
`fls`,
- Support for `xa_alloc` in the XAlloc bindings.
Some items have also become obsolete:
- The auxiliary bus abstractions have been implemented and are in use,
- The ELF utilities are not considered for being part of the core kernel
bindings anymore.
- VBIOS, falcon and GPU timer have been completed.
We now have quite a few TODO entries in the code, so annotate them with
a 4 letter code representing the corresponding task in `todo.rst`. This
allows to easily find which part of the code corresponds to a given
entry (and conversely).

Using the support for navigating the VBIOS, add support to extract vBIOS
ucode data required for GSP to boot. The main data extracted from the
vBIOS is the FWSEC-FRTS firmware which runs on the GSP processor. This
firmware runs in high secure mode, and sets up the WPR2 (Write protected
region) before the Booter runs on the SEC2 processor.
Tested on my Ampere GA102 and boot is successful.

Booting the GSP on Ampere requires an intricate dance between the GSP
and SEC2 falcons, where the GSP starts by running the FWSEC firmware to
create the WPR2 region , and then SEC2 loads the actual RISC-V firmware
into the GSP.
Add the common Falcon code and HAL for Ampere GPUs, and instantiate the
GSP and SEC2 Falcons that will be required to perform that dance and
boot the GSP.
Thanks to Ben Skeggs for pointing out an important bug in the memory
scrubbing code that could lead to a race condition and ultimately a
failure to boot the GSP!

Add a basic `wait_on` helper function to wait on such conditions
expressed as a closure, with a timeout argument.
This is temporary as we will switch to `read_poll_timeout` [1] once it

Before Rust 1.29.0, Clippy introduced the `cast_lossless` lint [1]:
> Rust’s `as` keyword will perform many kinds of conversions, including
> silently lossy conversions. Conversion functions such as `i32::from`
> will only perform lossless conversions. Using the conversion functions
> prevents conversions from becoming silently lossy if the input types
> ever change, and makes it clear for people reading the code that the
> conversion is lossless.
While this doesn't eliminate unchecked `as` conversions, it makes such
conversions easier to scrutinize. It also has the slight benefit of
removing a degree of freedom on which to bikeshed. Thus apply the
changes and enable the lint -- no functional change intended.

In Rust 1.63.0, Clippy introduced the `as_underscore` lint [1]:
> The conversion might include lossy conversion or a dangerous cast that
> might go undetected due to the type being inferred.
>
> The lint is allowed by default as using `_` is less wordy than always
> specifying the type.
Always specifying the type is especially helpful in function call
contexts where the inferred type may change at a distance. Specifying
the type also allows Clippy to spot more cases of `useless_conversion`.
The primary downside is the need to specify the type in trivial getters.
There are 4 such functions: 3 have become slightly less ergonomic, 1 was
revealed to be a `useless_conversion`.
While this doesn't eliminate unchecked `as` conversions, it makes such
conversions easier to scrutinize. It also has the slight benefit of
removing a degree of freedom on which to bikeshed. Thus apply the
changes and enable the lint -- no functional change intended.

devres changes also in the driver-core tree. Along with the drm core
abstractions and enough nova-core/nova-drm to use them. This is still

The other big NVIDIA related one is nouveau adds support for
Hopper/Blackwell GPUs, this required a new GSP firmware update to
570.144, and a bunch of rework in order to support multiple fw

There is also the introduction of an asahi uapi header file as a
precursor to getting the real driver in later, but to unblock
userspace mesa packages while the driver is trapped behind rust
enablement.

CONFIG_AUXILIARY_BUS cannot be enabled explicitly, and unless we select
it we have no way to include it (and thus to enable NOVA_CORE) unless
another driver happens to do it for us.

The layout of NV_PMC_BOOT_0 has two small issues:
- The "chipset" field, while useful to identify a chip, is actually an
aggregate of two distinct fields named "architecture" and
"implementation".
- The "architecture" field is split, with its MSB being at a different
location than the rest of its bits.
Redefine the register layout to match its actual definition as provided
by OpenRM and expose the fully-constructed "architecture" field through
our own "Architecture" type. The "chipset" pseudo-field is also useful
to have, so keep providing it.

Add the register!() macro, which defines a given register's layout and
provide bit-field accessors with a way to convert them to a given type.
This macro will allow us to make clear definitions of the registers and
manipulate their fields safely.
The long-term goal is to eventually move it to the kernel crate so it
can be used by other drivers as well, but it was agreed to first land it
into nova-core and make it mature there.
To illustrate its usage, use it to define the layout for the Boot0
(renamed to NV_PMC_BOOT_0 to match OpenRM's naming scheme) and take
advantage of its accessors.

We will need to perform things like allocating DMA memory during device
creation, so make sure to take the device context that will allow us to
perform these actions. This also allows us to use Devres::access to
obtain the BAR without holding a RCU lock.

We will commonly need to compare chipset versions, so derive the
ordering traits to make that possible. Also derive Copy and Clone since
passing Chipset by value will be more efficient than by reference.

Register an auxiliary device for nova-drm.
For now always use zero for the auxiliary device's ID; we don't use it
yet anyways. However, once it lands, we should switch to XArray.

Starting with Rust 1.88.0 (expected 2025-06-26) [1], `rustc` may move
back the `uninlined_format_args` to `style` from `pedantic` (it was
there waiting for rust-analyzer suppotr), and thus we will start to see
lints like:
warning: variables can be used directly in the `format!` string
--> rust/macros/kunit.rs:105:37
|
105 | let kunit_wrapper_fn_name = format!("kunit_rust_wrapper_{}", test);
| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
|
= help: for further information visit https://rust-lang.github.io/rust-clippy/master/index.html#uninlined_format_args
help: change this to
|
105 - let kunit_wrapper_fn_name = format!("kunit_rust_wrapper_{}", test);
105 + let kunit_wrapper_fn_name = format!("kunit_rust_wrapper_{test}");
There is even a case that is a pure removal:
warning: variables can be used directly in the `format!` string
--> rust/macros/module.rs:51:13
|
51 | format!("{field}={content}\0", field = field, content = content)
| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
|
= help: for further information visit https://rust-lang.github.io/rust-clippy/master/index.html#uninlined_format_args
help: change this to
|
51 - format!("{field}={content}\0", field = field, content = content)
51 + format!("{field}={content}\0")
The lints all seem like nice cleanups, thus just apply them.
We may want to disable `allow-mixed-uninlined-format-args` in the future.

Here is the big set of driver core updates for 6.15-rc1. Lots of stuff
happened this development cycle, including:
- kernfs scaling changes to make it even faster thanks to rcu
- bin_attribute constify work in many subsystems
- faux bus minor tweaks for the rust bindings
- rust binding updates for driver core, pci, and platform busses,
making more functionaliy available to rust drivers. These are all
due to people actually trying to use the bindings that were in 6.14.
- make Rafael and Danilo full co-maintainers of the driver core
codebase
- other minor fixes and updates.
This has been in linux-next for a while now, with the only reported
issue being some merge conflicts with the rust tree. Depending on which
tree you pull first, you will have conflicts in one of them. The merge
resolution has been in linux-next as an example of what to do, or can be

Add the initial nova-core driver stub.
nova-core is intended to serve as a common base for nova-drm (the
corresponding DRM driver) and the vGPU manager VFIO driver, serving as a
hard- and firmware abstraction layer for GSP-based NVIDIA GPUs.
The Nova project, including nova-core and nova-drm, in the long term,
is intended to serve as the successor of Nouveau for all GSP-based GPUs.
The motivation for both, starting a successor project for Nouveau and
doing so using the Rust programming language, is documented in detail
through a previous post on the mailing list [1], an LWN article [2] and a
talk from LPC '24.
In order to avoid the chicken and egg problem to require a user to
upstream Rust abstractions, but at the same time require the Rust
abstractions to implement the driver, nova-core kicks off as a driver
stub and is subsequently developed upstream.
