Opt for devm_ioremap_wc() over devm_ioremap() when mapping the framebuffer.
Using devm_ioremap() results in the VA being mapped with PAT=UC-, which
considerably slows down drm_fb_memcpy(). In contrast, devm_ioremap_wc()
maps the VA with PAT set to WC, leading to better performance on platforms
where access to UC memory is much slower than WC memory.
Here's the performance data measured in a guest on the physical machine
"Sapphire Rapids XCC".
With host KVM honors guest PAT memory types, the effective memory type
for this framebuffer range is
- WC when devm_ioremap_wc() is used
- UC- when devm_ioremap() is used.
The data presented is an average from 10 execution runs.

Replace GEM VRAM with GEM SHMEM in bochs. The new memory manager
stores buffer objects in system memory. Makes the driver's memory
management more reliably.
Most of the changes are hidden in external helpers that allocate
buffers. Replacing DRM_GEM_VRAM_DRIVER with DRM_GEM_SHMEM_DRIVER_OPS
swaps these. With GEM VRAM, the video memory was updated directly by
the DRM client. The biggest change within bochs is in atomic_update,
which now updates video memory via memcpy() from the BO in system
memory. Shadow-plane helpers maintaining the pointers to the buffer's
data, so bochs doesn't have to. The update is triggered by each page
flip's call to the framebuffer's dirty helper. The driver supports
damage clipping to minimize memcpy() overhead.
The advantage of GEM SHMEM is that it makes memory management
more reliable. Given DRM's double buffering during page flips, the
minimum amount of video memory is three times the maximum consumption
in some pathological cases. For example, if the maximum size of a GEM
buffer is 1920x1080-32 (i.e., 32-bit FullHD), the buffer size is
8 MiB. Display hardware has to provide at lease 24 MiB to reliably
page flip such configurations. This cannot always be guaranteed and
bochs already contains code to rule out <4 MiB configurations. With
GEM SHMEM, only 8 MiB of video memory are required for the given
example. Unsupported modes can be sorted out easily.

Remove the simple display pipeline in favor of the regular atomic
helpers in bochs. The simple-pipe helpers are considered deprecated
in DRM.
This effectivly inlines the simple-pipe code for plane and CRTC
support. Instead of a single update helper, there's now a mode-set
helper for the CRTC and an update helper for the plane. The encoder
changes type from NONE ot VIRTUAL.
Removing simple-pipe helpers from bochs will allow for related
cleanups in GEM VRAM helpers.

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored
and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a
quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this
quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns
void.
Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove
callback to the void returning variant.

Pass an instance of struct drm_format_conv_state to DRM's format
conversion helpers. Update all callers.
Most drivers can use the format-conversion state from their shadow-
plane state. The shadow plane's destroy function releases the
allocated buffer. Drivers will later be able to allocate a buffer
of appropriate size in their plane's atomic_check code.
The gud driver uses a separate thread for committing updates. For
now, the update worker contains its own format-conversion state.
Images in the format-helper tests are small. The tests preallocate
a static page for the temporary buffer. Unloading the module releases
the memory.

Multiple power domains need to be handled explicitly in each driver. The
driver core can not handle it automatically since it is not aware of
power sequencing requirements the hardware might have. This is not a
problem for simpledrm since everything is expected to be powered on by
the bootloader. simpledrm has just ensure it remains powered on during
its lifetime.
This is required on Apple silicon M2 and M2 Pro/Max/Ultra desktop
systems. The HDMI output initialized by the bootloader requires keeping
the display controller and a DP phy power domain on.

Based on grepping through the source code these drivers appear to be
missing a call to drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at system shutdown
time. Among other things, this means that if a panel is in use that it
won't be cleanly powered off at system shutdown time.
The fact that we should call drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() in the case
of OS shutdown/restart comes straight out of the kernel doc "driver
instance overview" in drm_drv.c.
All of the drivers in this patch were fairly straightforward to fix
since they already had a call to drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() at
remove/unbind time but were just lacking one at system shutdown. The
only hitch is that some of these drivers use the component model to
register/unregister their DRM devices. The shutdown callback is part
of the original device. The typical solution here, based on how other
DRM drivers do this, is to keep track of whether the device is bound
based on drvdata. In most cases the drvdata is the drm_device, so we
can just make sure it is NULL when the device is not bound. In some
drivers, this required minor code changes. To make things simpler,
drm_atomic_helper_shutdown() has been modified to consider a NULL
drm_device as a noop in the patch ("drm/atomic-helper:
drm_atomic_helper_shutdown(NULL) should be a noop").

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored
and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a
quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this
quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns
void.
Trivially convert the tiny drm drivers from always returning zero in the
remove callback to the void returning variant.

Enable damage clipping on the primary plane and iterate over small
areas of reported framebuffer damage. Avoid the overhead of permanent
full-screen updates that cirrus currently implements.
This problem is indicated by the warning
drm_plane_enable_fb_damage_clips() not called
in the kernel's log. Without damage clipping, drivers do full updates
of the screen area. This is costly as many screen updates, such as
cursor movement or command-line input, only change a small portion
of the output. Damage clipping allows renderers to inform drivers about
the changed areas.
With the damage information known, cirrus now iterates over a list of
change areas and only flushes those to the hardware's scanout buffer.

Replace simple-KMS helpers with DRM's regular helpers for atomic
modesetting. Avoids the mid-layer and the additional wrappers around
GEM's shadow-plane helpers.
Most of the simple-KMS code is just wrappers around regular atomic
helpers. The conversion is therefore equivalent to pulling the
simple-KMS helpers into cirrus and removing all the intermediate
code and data structures between the driver and the atomic helpers.
As the simple-KMS helpers lump primary plan, CRTC and encoder into a

The DRM helper drm_fb_build_fourcc_list() creates a list of color
formats for primary planes of the generic drivers. Simplify the helper:
- It used to mix and filter native and emulated formats as provided
by the driver. Now the only emulated format is XRGB8888, which is
required as fallback by legacy software. Drop support for emulating
any other formats.
- Also convert alpha formats to their non-alpha counterparts. Generic
drivers don't support primary planes with alpha formats and some
DTs incorrectly advertise alpha channels for non-alpha hardware. So
only export non-alpha formats for primary planes.
With the simplified helper, scrap format lists of the affected generic
drivers. All they need is the firmware buffer's native format, from which
the helper creates the list of color formats.

The pixel data for the ILI9486 is always 16-bits wide and it must be
sent over the SPI bus. When the controller is only able to deal with
8-bit transfers, this 16-bits data needs to be swapped before the
sending to account for the big endian bus, this is on the contrary not
needed when the SPI controller already supports 16-bits transfers.
The decision about swapping the pixel data or not is taken in the MIPI
DBI code by probing the controller capabilities: if the controller only
suppors 8-bit transfers the data is swapped, otherwise it is not.
This swapping/non-swapping is relying on the assumption that when the
controller does support 16-bit transactions then the data is sent
unswapped in 16-bits-per-word over SPI.
The problem with the ILI9486 driver is that it is forcing 8-bit
transactions also for controllers supporting 16-bits, violating the
assumption and corrupting the pixel data.
Align the driver to what is done in the MIPI DBI code by adjusting the
transfer size to the maximum allowed by the SPI controller.

Support the CRTC's color-management property and implement each model's
palette support.
The OF hardware has different methods of setting the palette. The
respective code has been taken from fbdev's offb and refactored into
per-model device functions. The device functions integrate this
functionality into the overall modesetting.
As palette handling is a CRTC property that depends on the primary
plane's color format, the plane's atomic_check helper now updates the
format field in ofdrm's custom CRTC state. The CRTC's atomic_flush
helper updates the palette for the format as needed.

Open Firmware provides basic display output via the 'display' node.
DT platform code already provides a device that represents the node's
framebuffer. Add a DRM driver for the device. The display mode and
color format is pre-initialized by the system's firmware. Runtime
modesetting via DRM is not possible. The display is useful during
early boot stages or as error fallback.
Similar functionality is already provided by fbdev's offb driver,
which is insufficient for modern userspace. The old driver includes
support for BootX device tree, which can be found on old 32-bit
PowerPC Macintosh systems. If these are still in use, the
functionality can be added to ofdrm or implemented in a new
driver. As with simpledrm, the fbdev driver cannot be selected if
ofdrm is already enabled.
Two notable points about the driver:
* Reading the framebuffer aperture from the device tree is not
reliable on all systems. Ofdrm takes the heuristics and a comment
from offb to pick the correct range.
* No resource management may be tied to the underlying PCI device.
Otherwise the handover to the native driver will fail with a resource
conflict. PCI management is therefore done as part of the platform
device's cleanup.
The driver has been tested on qemu's ppc64le emulation. The device
hand-over has been tested with bochs.

Replace the simple-KMS helpers with the regular atomic helpers. The
regular helpers are better architectured and therefore allow for easier
code sharing among drivers. No functional changes.

Inline the helpers for initializing the hardware FB, the memory
management and the modesetting into the device-creation function.
No functional changes.
In the original code, init helpers depended on values from other
init helpers. Inlining the functions ensures that steps are taken
in the correct order. It's also easier to see what happens. The
device is simple enough to be set up in one function. Only clocks
and regulators are still set up in their own helpers, as their
presence is system dependent.

The field paddr of struct drm_gem_dma_object holds a DMA address, which
might actually be a physical address. However, depending on the platform,
it can also be a bus address or a virtual address managed by an IOMMU.
Hence, rename the field to dma_addr, which is more applicable.
In order to do this renaming the following coccinelle script was used:
```
Rename "GEM CMA" helpers to "GEM DMA" helpers - considering the
hierarchy of APIs (mm/cma -> dma -> gem dma) calling them "GEM
DMA" seems to be more applicable.
Besides that, commit e57924d4ae ("drm/doc: Task to rename CMA helpers")
requests to rename the CMA helpers and implies that people seem to be
confused about the naming.
In order to do this renaming the following script was used:
```

REGEX_SYM_UPPER="[0-9A-Z_\-]"
REGEX_SYM_LOWER="[0-9a-z_\-]"

# Find all upper case 'CMA' symbols and replace them with 'DMA'.

for ff in $(grep -RiHl "cma_obj" $DIRS)
do
sed -i -E "s/cma_obj/dma_obj/g" $ff
done
```
Only a few more manual modifications were needed, e.g. reverting the
following modifications in some DRM Kconfig files
- select CMA if HAVE_DMA_CONTIGUOUS
+ select DMA if HAVE_DMA_CONTIGUOUS
as well as manually picking the occurrences of 'CMA'/'cma' in comments and
documentation which relate to "GEM CMA", but not "FB CMA".
Also drivers/gpu/drm/Makefile was fixed up manually after renaming
drm_gem_cma_helper.c to drm_gem_dma_helper.c.
This patch is compile-time tested building a x86_64 kernel with
`make allyesconfig && make drivers/gpu/drm`.
The remove() function calls bochs_hw_fini() but this function is not called
in the error handling of the probe.
This call releases the resources allocated by bochs_hw_init() used in
bochs_load().
Update the probe and bochs_load() to call bochs_hw_fini() if an error
occurs after a successful bochs_hw_init() call.
Implement DRM's aperture helpers under video/ for sharing with other
sub-systems. Remove DRM-isms from the interface. The helpers track
the ownership of framebuffer apertures and provide hand-over from
firmware, such as EFI and VESA, to native graphics drivers.
Other subsystems, such as fbdev and vfio, also have to maintain ownership
of framebuffer apertures. Moving DRM's aperture helpers to a more public
location allows all subsystems to interact with each other and share a
common implementation.
The aperture helpers are selected by the various firmware drivers within
DRM and fbdev, and the VGA text-console driver.
The original DRM interface is kept in place for use by DRM drivers.
v3:
* prefix all interfaces with aperture_ (Javier)
* rework and simplify documentation (Javier)
* rename struct dev_aperture to struct aperture_range
* rebase onto latest DRM
* update MAINTAINERS entry
The SPI core always reports a "MODALIAS=spi:<foo>", even if the device was
registered via OF. This means that the st7735r.ko module won't autoload if
a DT has a node with a compatible "okaya,rh128128t" string.
In that case, kmod expects a "MODALIAS=of:N*T*Cokaya,rh128128t" uevent but
instead will get a "MODALIAS=spi:rh128128t", which is not present in the
list of aliases:
$ modinfo drivers/gpu/drm/tiny/st7735r.ko | grep alias
alias: of:N*T*Cokaya,rh128128tC*
alias: of:N*T*Cokaya,rh128128t
alias: of:N*T*Cjianda,jd-t18003-t01C*
alias: of:N*T*Cjianda,jd-t18003-t01
alias: spi:jd-t18003-t01
To workaround this issue, add in the SPI table an entry for that device.
