random: vDSO: avoid call to memset() when zeroing reserved parameter
After a recent change in LLVM [1], builds with the random vDSO implementation, such as PowerPC and RISC-V, fail when checking the vDSO: arch/powerpc/kernel/vdso/vdso32.so.dbg: dynamic relocations are not supported arch/riscv/kernel/vdso/vdso.so.dbg: dynamic relocations are not supported memset() is now generated when zeroing params->reserved for some builds because LLVM has an optimization (now run in more instances) that can recognize at compile time when it is assigning a static value to a contiguous area of memory and turn that into a call to memset(). Both clang and GCC assume memset() is always available [2]. Clang has an internal fiddly hook, -max-store-memset, which we can set to a high number, to disable generating out of line memset calls [3]. Similarly, GCC has -finline-stringops=memset to do the same [4], should this issue ever hit future version of GCC. While these options wouldn't make sense for normal kernel code, it is fine for the extremely limited and intentionally compact vDSO code. Link: |

x86/vdso: Respect COMPAT_32BIT_TIME
If CONFIG_COMPAT_32BIT_TIME is disabled then the vDSO should not provide any 32-bit time related functionality. This is the intended effect of the kconfig option and also the fallback system calls would also not be implemented. Locking updates for v7.2:
Futex updates:
- Optimize futex hash bucket access patterns (Peter Zijlstra)
- Large series to address the robust futex unlock race for real,
by Thomas Gleixner:
"The robust futex unlock mechanism is racy in respect
to the clearing of the robust_list_head::list_op_pending
pointer because unlock and clearing the pointer are not
atomic. The race window is between the unlock and clearing the
pending op pointer. If the task is forced to exit in this
window, exit will access a potentially invalid pending op
pointer when cleaning up the robust list. That happens if
another task manages to unmap the object containing the lock
before the cleanup, which results in an UAF. In the worst case
this UAF can lead to memory corruption when unrelated content
has been mapped to the same address by the time the access
happens.
User space can't solve this problem without help from the kernel.
This series provides the kernel side infrastructure to help it
along:
1) Combined unlock, pointer clearing, wake-up for the
contended case
2) VDSO based unlock and pointer clearing helpers with a
fix-up function in the kernel when user space was interrupted
within the critical section.

x86/vdso: Implement __vdso_futex_robust_try_unlock()
When the FUTEX_ROBUST_UNLOCK mechanism is used for unlocking (PI-)futexes, then the unlock sequence in userspace looks like this: 1) robust_list_set_op_pending(mutex); 2) robust_list_remove(mutex); lval = gettid(); 3) if (atomic_try_cmpxchg(&mutex->lock, lval, 0)) 4) robust_list_clear_op_pending(); else 5) sys_futex(OP,...FUTEX_ROBUST_UNLOCK); That still leaves a minimal race window between #3 and #4 where the mutex could be acquired by some other task which observes that it is the last user and: 1) unmaps the mutex memory 2) maps a different file, which ends up covering the same address When then the original task exits before reaching #5 then the kernel robust list handling observes the pending op entry and tries to fix up user space. In case that the newly mapped data contains the TID of the exiting thread at the address of the mutex/futex the kernel will set the owner died bit in that memory and therefore corrupt unrelated data. Provide a VDSO function which exposes the critical section window in the VDSO symbol table. The resulting addresses are updated in the task's mm when the VDSO is (re)map()'ed. The core code detects when a task was interrupted within the critical section and is about to deliver a signal. It then invokes an architecture specific function which determines whether the pending op pointer has to be cleared or not. The unlock assembly sequence on 64-bit is: mov %esi,%eax // Load TID into EAX xor %ecx,%ecx // Set ECX to 0 lock cmpxchg %ecx,(%rdi) // Try the TID -> 0 transition .Lstart: jnz .Lend movq %rcx,(%rdx) // Clear list_op_pending .Lend: ret So the decision can be simply based on the ZF state in regs->flags. The pending op pointer is always in DX independent of the build mode (32/64-bit) to make the pending op pointer retrieval uniform. The size of the pointer is stored in the matching criticial section range struct and the core code retrieves it from there. So the pointer retrieval function does not have to care. It is bit-size independent: return regs->flags & X86_EFLAGS_ZF ? regs->dx : NULL; There are two entry points to handle the different robust list pending op pointer size: __vdso_futex_robust_list64_try_unlock() __vdso_futex_robust_list32_try_unlock() The 32-bit VDSO provides only __vdso_futex_robust_list32_try_unlock(). The 64-bit VDSO provides always __vdso_futex_robust_list64_try_unlock() and when COMPAT is enabled also the list32 variant, which is required to support multi-size robust list pointers used by gaming emulators. The unlock function is inspired by an idea from Mathieu Desnoyers. x86/vdso: Prepare for robust futex unlock support
There will be a VDSO function to unlock non-contended robust futexes in user space. The unlock sequence is racy vs. clearing the list_pending_op pointer in the task's robust list head. To plug this race the kernel needs to know the critical section window so it can clear the pointer when the task is interrupted within that race window. The window is determined by labels in the inline assembly. Add these symbols to the vdso2c generator and use them in the VDSO VMA code to update the critical section addresses in mm_struct::futex on (re)map(). The symbols are not exported to user space, but available in the debug version of the vDSO. x86/vdso: Fix incorrect size in munmap() on map_vdso() failure
In map_vdso(), if a failure occurs during the installation of the VVAR
mappings, the error path attempts to clean up previously allocated mappings
using do_munmap(). However, the cleanup for the VVAR mapping is incorrectly
using image->size (the size of the vDSO text) instead of the actual size
allocated for the VVAR area.
Replace the incorrect do_munmap() image->size parameter with the constant
VDSO_NR_PAGES * PAGE_SIZE. Ensure the unmap size exactly matches the size
used during the vdso_install_vvar_mapping() phase to provide a symmetrical
and complete teardown of the memory region.

x86/vdso: undefine CONFIG_HUGETLB_PAGE_OPTIMIZE_VMEMMAP for vdso32
The 32-bit VDSO build on x86_64 uses fake_32bit_build.h to undefine various kernel configuration options that are not suitable for the VDSO context or may cause build issues when including kernel headers. x86/vdso: Use 32-bit CHECKFLAGS for compat vDSO
When building the compat vDSO the CHECKFLAGS from the 64-bit kernel are used. These are combined with the 32-bit CFLAGS. x86/entry/vdso32: Work around libgcc unwinder bug
The unwinder code in libgcc has a long standing bug which causes it to
fail to pick up the signal frame CFI flag. This is a generic bug
across all platforms.
It affects the __kernel_sigreturn and __kernel_rt_sigreturn vdso entry
points on i386. The x86-64 kernel doesn't provide a sigreturn stub,
and so there is no kernel-provided code that is affected on x86-64.
libgcc does have a legacy fallback path which happens to work as long
as the bytes immediately before each of the sigreturn functions fall
outside any function. This patch adds a nop before the ALIGN to each
of the sigreturn stubs to ensure that this is, indeed, the case.
The rest of the patch is just a comment which documents the invariants
that need to be maintained for this legacy path to work correctly.
This is a manifest bug: in the current vdso, __kernel_vsyscall is a
multiple of 16 bytes long and thus __kernel_sigreturn does not have
any padding in front of it.

x86/entry/vdso: Fix filtering of vdso compiler flags
This fixes several typos in the filtering of compiler flags for vdso,
discovered by Chris Mason using an AI script:
1. "-fno-PIE" was written as "fno-PIE".
2. "CC_PLUGINS_FLAGS" was written as "CC_PLUGIN_FLAGS"
To the best of my knowledge, none of these actually had any real
impact on the build at this time but they are genuine bugs which could
break things at any point in the future.
Chris's script also found that "CONFIG_X86_USER_SHADOW_STACK" was
missing "CONFIG_", but it needs a different fix.

vdso: Remove struct getcpu_cache
The cache parameter of getcpu() is useless nowadays for various reasons. * It is never passed by userspace for either the vDSO or syscalls. * It is never used by the kernel. * It could not be made to work on the current vDSO architecture. * The structure definition is not part of the UAPI headers. * vdso_getcpu() is superseded by restartable sequences in any case. Remove the struct and its header. As a side-effect this gets rid of an unwanted inclusion of the linux/ header namespace from vDSO code. x86/entry/vdso32: When using int $0x80, use it directly
When neither sysenter32 nor syscall32 is available (on either FRED-capable 64-bit hardware or old 32-bit hardware), there is no reason to do a bunch of stack shuffling in __kernel_vsyscall. Unfortunately, just overwriting the initial "push" instructions will mess up the CFI annotations, so suffer the 3-byte NOP if not applicable. x86/cpufeature: Replace X86_FEATURE_SYSENTER32 with X86_FEATURE_SYSFAST32
In most cases, the use of "fast 32-bit system call" depends either on X86_FEATURE_SEP or X86_FEATURE_SYSENTER32 || X86_FEATURE_SYSCALL32. However, nearly all the logic for both is identical. Define X86_FEATURE_SYSFAST32 which indicates that *either* SYSENTER32 or SYSCALL32 should be used, for either 32- or 64-bit kernels. This defaults to SYSENTER; use SYSCALL if the SYSCALL32 bit is also set. As this removes ALL existing uses of X86_FEATURE_SYSENTER32, which is a kernel-only synthetic feature bit, simply remove it and replace it with X86_FEATURE_SYSFAST32. This leaves an unused alternative for a true 32-bit kernel, but that should really not matter in any way. The clearing of X86_FEATURE_SYSCALL32 can be removed once the patches for automatically clearing disabled features has been merged. Signed-off-by: H. x86/entry/vdso: Include GNU_PROPERTY and GNU_STACK PHDRs
Currently the vdso doesn't include .note.gnu.property or a GNU noexec stack annotation (the -z noexecstack in the linker script is ineffective because we specify PHDRs explicitly.) The motivation is that the dynamic linker currently do not check these. However, this is a weak excuse: the vdso*.so are also supposed to be usable at link libraries, and there is no reason why the dynamic linker might not want or need to check these in the future, so add them back in -- it is trivial enough. Use symbolic constants for the PHDR permission flags. [ v4: drop unrelated formatting changes ] Signed-off-by: H. x86/entry/vdso32: Remove open-coded DWARF in sigreturn.S
The vdso32 sigreturn.S contains open-coded DWARF bytecode, which includes a hack for gdb to not try to step back to a previous call instruction when backtracing from a signal handler. Neither of those are necessary anymore: the backtracing issue is handled by ".cfi_entry simple" and ".cfi_signal_frame", both of which have been supported for a very long time now, which allows the remaining frame to be built using regular .cfi annotations. Add a few more register offsets to the signal frame just for good measure. Replace the nop on fallthrough of the system call (which should never, ever happen) with a ud2a trap. Signed-off-by: H. A macro SYSCALL_ENTER_KERNEL was defined in sigreturn.S, with the ability of overriding it. x86/entry/vdso32: Don't rely on int80_landing_pad for adjusting ip
There is no fundamental reason to use the int80_landing_pad symbol to adjust ip when moving the vdso. If ip falls within the vdso, and the vdso is moved, we should change the ip accordingly, regardless of mode or location within the vdso. This *currently* can only happen on 32 bits, but there isn't any reason not to do so generically. Note that if this is ever possible from a vdso-internal call, then the user space stack will also needed to be adjusted (as well as the shadow stack, if enabled.) Fortunately this is not currently the case. At the moment, we don't even consider other threads when moving the vdso. The assumption is that it is only used by process freeze/thaw for migration, where this is not an issue. Signed-off-by: H. x86/entry/vdso: Refactor the vdso build
- Separate out the vdso sources into common, vdso32, and vdso64 directories. - Build the 32- and 64-bit vdsos in their respective subdirectories; this greatly simplifies the build flags handling. - Unify the mangling of Makefile flags between the 32- and 64-bit vdso code as much as possible; all common rules are put in arch/x86/entry/vdso/common/Makefile.include. The remaining is very simple for 32 bits; the 64-bit one is only slightly more complicated because it contains the x32 generation rule. - Define __DISABLE_EXPORTS when building the vdso. This need seems to have been masked by different ordering compile flags before. - Change CONFIG_X86_64 to BUILD_VDSO32_64 in vdso32/system_call.S, to make it compatible with including fake_32bit_build.h. - The -fcf-protection= option was "leaking" from the kernel build, for reasons that was not clear to me. Furthermore, several distributions ship with it set to a default value other than "-fcf-protection=none". Make it match the configuration options for *user space*. Note that this patch may seem large, but the vast majority of it is simply code movement. Signed-off-by: H. Summary
* Move vm_table members out of kernel/sysctl.c
All vm_table array members have moved to their respective subsystems leading
to the removal of vm_table from kernel/sysctl.c. This increases modularity by
placing the ctl_tables closer to where they are actually used and at the same
time reducing the chances of merge conflicts in kernel/sysctl.c.
* ctl_table range fixes
Replace the proc_handler function that checks variable ranges in
coredump_sysctls and vdso_table with the one that actually uses the extra{1,2}
pointers as min/max values. This tightens the range of the values that users
can pass into the kernel effectively preventing {under, over}flows.
* Misc fixes
Correct grammar errors and typos in test messages. Update sysctl files in
MAINTAINERS. Constified and removed array size in declaration for
alignment_tbl
* Testing
- These have all been in linux-next for at least 1 month
- They have gone through 0-day

Updates for the VDSO infrastructure:
- Consolidate the VDSO storage
The VDSO data storage and data layout has been largely architecture
specific for historical reasons. That increases the maintenance effort
and causes inconsistencies over and over.
There is no real technical reason for architecture specific layouts and
implementations. The architecture specific details can easily be
integrated into a generic layout, which also reduces the amount of
duplicated code for managing the mappings.
Convert all architectures over to a unified layout and common mapping
infrastructure. This splits the VDSO data layout into subsystem
specific blocks, timekeeping, random and architecture parts, which
provides a better structure and allows to improve and update the
functionalities without conflict and interaction.
- Rework the timekeeping data storage
The current implementation is designed for exposing system timekeeping
accessors, which was good enough at the time when it was designed.
PTP and Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) change that as there are
requirements to expose independent PTP clocks, which are not related to
system timekeeping.
Replace the monolithic data storage by a structured layout, which
allows to add support for independent PTP clocks on top while reusing
both the data structures and the time accessor implementations.

x86/headers: Replace __ASSEMBLY__ with __ASSEMBLER__ in non-UAPI headers
While the GCC and Clang compilers already define __ASSEMBLER__ automatically when compiling assembly code, __ASSEMBLY__ is a macro that only gets defined by the Makefiles in the kernel. This can be very confusing when switching between userspace and kernelspace coding, or when dealing with UAPI headers that rather should use __ASSEMBLER__ instead. So let's standardize on the __ASSEMBLER__ macro that is provided by the compilers now. This is mostly a mechanical patch (done with a simple "sed -i" statement), with some manual tweaks in <asm/frame.h>, <asm/hw_irq.h> and <asm/setup.h> that mentioned this macro in comments with some missing underscores. x86/vdso: Switch to generic storage implementation
The generic storage implementation provides the same features as the custom one. However it can be shared between architectures, making maintenance easier. This switch also moves the random state data out of the time data page. The currently used hardcoded __VDSO_RND_DATA_OFFSET does not take into account changes to the time data page layout. vdso: Rename included Makefile
As the Makefile is included into other Makefiles it can not be used to define objects to be built from the current source directory. However the generic datastore will introduce such a local source file. Rename the included Makefile so it is clear how it is to be used and to make room for a regular Makefile in lib/vdso/. x86/vdso: Fix latent bug in vclock_pages calculation
The vclock pages are *after* the non-vclock pages. Currently there are both
two vclock and two non-vclock pages so the existing logic works by
accident. As soon as the number of pages changes it will break however.
This will be the case with the introduction of the generic vDSO data
storage.
Use a macro to keep the calculation understandable and in sync between
the linker script and mapping code.

x86/cfi: Clean up linkage
With the introduction of kCFI the addition of ENDBR to SYM_FUNC_START* no longer suffices to make the function indirectly callable. This now requires the use of SYM_TYPED_FUNC_START. As such, remove the implicit ENDBR from SYM_FUNC_START* and add some explicit annotations to fix things up again. x86: vdso: move the sysctl to arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdso32-setup.c
When CONFIG_X86_32 is defined and CONFIG_UML is not defined, vdso_enabled belongs to arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdso32-setup.c. So, move it into its own file. Before this patch, vdso_enabled was allowed to be set to a value exceeding 1 on x86_32 architecture. After this patch is applied, vdso_enabled is not permitted to set the value more than 1. It does not matter, because according to the function load_vdso32(), only vdso_enabled is set to 1, VDSO would be enabled. Other values all mean "disabled". The same limitation could be seen in the function vdso32_setup(). treewide: const qualify ctl_tables where applicable
Add the const qualifier to all the ctl_tables in the tree except for
watchdog_hardlockup_sysctl, memory_allocation_profiling_sysctls,
loadpin_sysctl_table and the ones calling register_net_sysctl (./net,
drivers/inifiniband dirs). These are special cases as they use a
registration function with a non-const qualified ctl_table argument or
modify the arrays before passing them on to the registration function.
Constifying ctl_table structs will prevent the modification of
proc_handler function pointers as the arrays would reside in .rodata.
This is made possible after commit
