Networking changes for 7.4.
Core & protocols
----------------
- Continue the work on removing rtnl_lock dependencies:
- per-netns ARP and ND neighbour tables, with the default settings
now configurable per netns (inheritance from init_net is
controlled by the new net.core.neigh_inherit_init_net sysctl)
- RCU-protected configuration and rtnl_lock-less fill_info() for
hsr, netkit, sit, vlan and vxlan devices
- per-netns device unregistration for ip tunnel and gre devices
- use the netdev instance lock instead of rtnl_lock when reading
speed and duplex via sysfs
- batch the flushing of uncached routes at device unregistration
time, relieving rtnl_lock contention on netns dismantle.
- Add hardware pacing offload support, admin-controlled via a new
rtnetlink attribute, with sch_fq integration (implemented in idpf).
- Re-segment BIG TCP GSO packets into GSO packets fitting the
egress device limits instead of plain MSS-sized segments,
improving throughput for mixed BIG TCP / non-BIG TCP paths
by up to 70%.
- Generate RSS keys that spread flows over all the RX queues; the
previous random keys could leave some queues unused.
- Optimize the bridge VLAN forwarding paths: cache the port-VLAN in fdb
entries and consider only VLAN members when flooding, for ~10% more
Mpps in the fdb forwarding path.
- A few TCP/IP performance improvements aimed at efficient cache
usage and reducing contention.
- Add the TCP ROCCET congestion control, a CUBIC variant aimed at
avoiding bufferbloat in cellular networks.
- Continue the conversion of getsockopt callbacks to sockopt_t.
- Add an ethtool command to list the front-facing ports of an
interface, including SFP cages and modules, using the phy_port
representation.
- Enable BIG TCP support for bareudp tunnels.
- Remove the IPV6_ADDRFORM socket option and disallow buggy TCP state
transitions (listen() + shutdown() + connect() and connect() +
connect(AF_UNSPEC) + listen()).
- Remove most BUG_ON()s from core packet processing, replacing them
with error paths.
Wireless
--------
- Latency improvements, including lockless station get/dump and beacon
updates, plus RTNL reduction and locking cleanups.
- Infrastructure for non-station TX/RX with MLO.
- NAN (Wi-Fi Aware) Instant Communication support and other NAN
improvements.
- Control frame Integrity Protocol (CIP) and protected TWT support.
- Improvements for AP regulatory checks.
Netfilter
---------
- Disable br_netfilter in user namespaces and schedule it for removal
in 2027.
- Restrict the raw table in nft_compat to the specific family, hook and
priority.
- Prepare the flowtable for mixed IPv4-over-IPv6 tunneling (and
vice versa).
- Use GFP_KERNEL_ACCOUNT for most netfilter allocations, for better
integration with memcg.
- Allow discovering conntrack zone filtering support in ctnetlink
dumps, and fix nfnetlink_hook handling of large dumps.
Deletions
---------
- Move the LLC type 2 sockets out of tree. There are no known users and
the code attracts a never-ending stream of LLM-driven fixes.

Kbuild / Kconfig updates for 7.4
Kbuild:
- Suppress compiler flags in debug info for external module builds
- Use '-fmacro-prefix-map' in more places in the build
- Merge initial set of changes from Lorenzo's speed up series, along
with some fixes found through testing
- Avoid allocating .modinfo in vmlinux
- Speed up kallsyms by indexing symbols by token and outputting binary
data to disk directly then including in assembly via .incbin
- Don't sort $(NM) output when unnecessary
- Only emit relocations on the final vmlinx link
- Reimplement mksysmap in C
- Move many cc-option and ld-option calls into the Kconfig stage to
cache their results
- Use pigz for gzip compression when available
- Move gen_init_cpio and gen_initramfs.sh from usr/ to scripts/
- Add a TOML configuration to scripts/container and update documentation
accordingly
- Add a generic, opt-in mechanism for checking that headers can compile
standalone
- Update machine function splitting argument for LLVM 24 rename in
AutoFDO build
- Miscellaneous minor clean ups, fixes, and hardening, mostly
found/fixed via LLMs
Kconfig:
- Turn recursive ranges into an error
- Fix savedefconfig for defaults that were adjusted for being out of
range and revert a previously applied workaround
- Improvements and hardening around integer and hexadecimal values
- Emit a warning when selecting or implying a choice symbol, which has no
effect
- Emit a warning when KCONFIG_PROBABILITY is malformed
- Introduce def_string / def_int / def_hex to mirror the existing
def_bool / def_tristate to succinctly set a value and type at the same
time.
- Add cc-option-str and ld-option-str macros to act like Kbuild's
cc-option and ld-option, returning the string when the option is
supported, allowing many checks to be moved into Kconfig
- Minor usability improvements to Kconfig tests

docs: netdev: additional info requirements for bug fixes
Knowing how AI-generated patches were tested would be a great help when reviewing them. Explicitly ask people to describe the discovery and validation process they followed. I posted this as an RFC a while back and there were some concerns from developers that it would gum up the process. With Linus's recent complaints about the size of our PRs, we really need this information. I launched an AI bot which complains if people don't explain how bugs were discovered and tested (look for netdev-bot+sinfo@kernel.org, s=series info). We need to document this requirement. kbuild: compress the kernel with pigz if available
The gzip step of a kernel build is very lengthy, especially for larger
builds such as allmodconfig.
gzip itself cannot be run in parallel, however an alternative tool exists
that can, providing the same feature set as gzip itself - pigz - which
works as a drop-in replacement.
On a 128-core Threadripper, gzip -9 of a 36 MiB x86-64 vmlinux.bin takes
1.6s, and with pigz it takes 0.09s, so the performance increase is
significant.
Therefore introduce the KPGZIP build variable which specifies the
compressor to use for the kernel image and default it to pigz if available,
or KGZIP otherwise (which itself defaults to gzip).
Modules, packaging and the embedded kernel configuration (CONFIG_IKCONFIG)
continue to use KGZIP which defaults to a single-threaded gzip instance.
Module compression is run in parallel by make, so pigz offers no benefit
there, packaging sits outside the build and the embedded configuration is
too small to matter.
pigz is executed using scripts/jobserver-exec, which reserves the job slots
make has free - necessary, as otherwise pigz would just grab unbounded
CPUs.
The kernel image compression step is always performed at the end of the
build so should typically have all job slots available.
pigz always provides byte-for-byte identical output across runs regardless
of thread count, but pigz and gzip are not guaranteed to generate the same
binary output, so reproducible builds must use the same tools consistently.
Also update Documentation/kbuild/kbuild.rst to describe KPGZIP and
Documentation/process/changes.rst to list the optional pigz dependency.
While there, add entries for the other compressor programs.
Finally, update scripts/ver_linux to include the pigz version there.
Every x86 build ends with the compression of vmlinux.bin, 36MB for
defconfig and over 200MB for allmodconfig, no-op builds are unchanged.
Whole build, 128-thread Threadripper 9980X, best of N runs:

It has been a not-too-busy cycle for docs; here's the highlights:
- A (hopefully) consensus change to our LLM-attribution requirements,
removing the specific model name from the Assisted-by tag.
- A couple of new realtime documents
- Various docs-build-system fixes
- Ongoing work with the Chinese, Portuguese, and Japanese translations.
...and lots of typo fixes, grammar tweaks, etc.

Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski:
"One of the 'small improvements all over the place' releases for us.
It's hard to draw any direct comparisons because summer vacations
disrupted our patch processing (and presumably - generation) quite a
bit.
Quick and dirty count suggests we (Paolo and I) merged a very similar
number of net (632) and net-next (648) patches. This is not telling
the full story either because 1/3 to 1/2 of the net-next patches also
*seem* like AI-driven low priority fixes, cleanups and clarifications.
We are completely overwhelmed, of course. The glimmer of hope is that
we secured sufficient LLM budget and access (thank you Meta!) to run
reviews with multiple frontier models on each patch. This eliminates
some hallucinations. That said, in terms of review, the LLMs can only
do so much.
The sad truth is that our APIs (especially for rare events like PCIe
errors, timeouts etc) have always been racy, and now LLMs don't let us
ignore that. I expect our direction for the next release will be to
tweak the reviews a little bit more, but start shifting focus to
letting the LLMs take care of the busy work - managing patchwork,
automating common process complaints, editing commit messages, and
maybe applying patches which already got "reviewed-by" tags from
people we trust...

Major changes:
- Redesign the verifier error reporting: failures now carry source and
instruction annotations along with the causal event history that led
to them, making program rejections far easier to debug and repair
(Kumar Kartikeya Dwivedi)
- Add arena argument support to kfuncs and struct_ops through the new
__arena and __arena__nullable suffixes (Tejun Heo, Puranjay Mohan,
Kumar Kartikeya Dwivedi, Ihor Solodrai)
- Signed BPF program loader rework to accommodate both BPF and security
community needs where the kernel runs the signature verification at
BPF_PROG_LOAD time before the LSM admission hook (Daniel Borkmann)
- Add a set of ksock kfuncs which let BPF LSM and syscall programs
create, connect and send on UDP sockets in order to emit telemetry
data (Mahe Tardy)
- Unify helper and kfunc call argument verification and classify kfunc
arguments purely from BTF into a generated bpf_func_proto which is
computed once at add-call time (Amery Hung)
Other features and fixes:
- Enable EXECMEM_ROX_CACHE for BPF allocations on x86 (Mike Rapoport)
- Add bidirectional VLAN support to bpf_fib_lookup() through the new
BPF_FIB_LOOKUP_VLAN and BPF_FIB_LOOKUP_VLAN_INPUT flags
(Avinash Duduskar)
- Infer zext_dst from static register liveness analysis to fix 32-bit
zero-extension semantics, and remove the artificial limitations on
pointer types eligible for spilling (Eduard Zingerman)
- Inline the numeric open-coded iterator kfuncs so that bpf_for() loops
no longer pay a kfunc call on every iteration (Puranjay Mohan)
- Add an arena-based bitmap data structure to libarena along with
serial and parallel selftests (Emil Tsalapatis)
- Teach resolve_btfids to discover kfuncs from the kernel's BTF ID sets
and to emit kfunc BTF decl tags, reducing the kernel build's
dependency on pahole features (Ihor Solodrai)
- Add BPF_F_ADJ_ROOM_DECAP_* flags to bpf_skb_adjust_room() so that
tunnel decapsulation can update the GSO and encapsulation state of
the skb (Nick Hudson)
- Fix the ring buffer pending_pos walk and the available-data
accounting on 32-bit position wrap (Israel Téllez García)
- Add memory usage accounting for arena maps and fix an mmap_lock
deadlock on arena lock failure (Jiayuan Chen)
- Add tracing_multi link info support to the kernel UAPI and bpftool,
and refactor the stack map code to run with preemption disabled
(Jiri Olsa)
- Support BPF_F_EGRESS in bpf_redirect_peer() to emit the skb in the
egress direction of the target's peer device (Jordan Rife)
- Add a KF_SPINLOCK_SAFE kfunc flag so that providers, in particular
modules, can declare kfuncs safe to call under bpf_spin_lock instead
of relying on the verifier's hard-coded allowlist (Kaitao Cheng)
- Introduce global percpu data for BPF programs with libbpf probing
and bpftool skeleton support, and stop exposing uninitialized kernel
heap memory when copying per-CPU map values (Leon Hwang)
- Add s390 JIT support for load-acquire and store-release instructions
(Maxim Khmelevskii)
- Fix a CFI mismatch in the task work callback and an arm64 KASAN
false positive after bpf_throw() (Mykyta Yatsenko)
- Reject writes through untrusted BTF pointers and bound the
rdonly/rdwr_buf_size kfunc arguments (Nicholas Dudar)
- Invalidate RCU pointers only after the final spin unlock and account
for preempt and IRQ disabled regions as overlapping RCU protection
(Ning Ding)
- Support mixing bpf2bpf calls and tail calls on RV64, add signed
operations and 32-bit atomics to the RV32 JIT, and add timed may_goto
support (Pu Lehui, Kuan-Wei Chiu, Feng Jiang)
- Fix a use-after-free on mm_struct in bpf_find_vma() for foreign tasks
and an mmap_lock leak in the irq_work path (Sanghyun Park)
- Populate mmap-able BPF array map memory lazily which makes mmap() O(1)
instead of proportional to the map size (Song Liu)
- Introduce a jit_required flag and reject programs with inlined
helpers when no JIT is available, where the interpreter would
otherwise jump into an invalid address (Tiezhu Yang)
- Fix the x86 JIT per-CPU address resolution into an extended register
where the REX prefix dropped the high destination register bit
(Vineet Gupta)
- Reject MEM_ALLOC BTF accesses past object bounds, arena frees below

Pull bpf updates from Daniel Borkmann:
"Major changes:
- Redesign the verifier error reporting: failures now carry source
and instruction annotations along with the causal event history
that led to them, making program rejections far easier to debug and
repair (Kumar Kartikeya Dwivedi)
- Add arena argument support to kfuncs and struct_ops through the new
__arena and __arena__nullable suffixes (Tejun Heo, Puranjay Mohan,
Kumar Kartikeya Dwivedi, Ihor Solodrai)
- Signed BPF program loader rework to accommodate both BPF and
security community needs where the kernel runs the signature
verification at BPF_PROG_LOAD time before the LSM admission hook
(Daniel Borkmann)
- Add a set of ksock kfuncs which let BPF LSM and syscall programs
create, connect and send on UDP sockets in order to emit telemetry
data (Mahe Tardy)
- Unify helper and kfunc call argument verification and classify
kfunc arguments purely from BTF into a generated bpf_func_proto
which is computed once at add-call time (Amery Hung)
Other features and fixes:
- Enable EXECMEM_ROX_CACHE for BPF allocations on x86 (Mike Rapoport)
- Add bidirectional VLAN support to bpf_fib_lookup() through the new
BPF_FIB_LOOKUP_VLAN and BPF_FIB_LOOKUP_VLAN_INPUT flags (Avinash
Duduskar)
- Infer zext_dst from static register liveness analysis to fix 32-bit
zero-extension semantics, and remove the artificial limitations on
pointer types eligible for spilling (Eduard Zingerman)
- Inline the numeric open-coded iterator kfuncs so that bpf_for()
loops no longer pay a kfunc call on every iteration (Puranjay
Mohan)
- Add an arena-based bitmap data structure to libarena along with
serial and parallel selftests (Emil Tsalapatis)
- Teach resolve_btfids to discover kfuncs from the kernel's BTF ID
sets and to emit kfunc BTF decl tags, reducing the kernel build's
dependency on pahole features (Ihor Solodrai)
- Add a KF_SPINLOCK_SAFE kfunc flag so that providers, in particular
modules, can declare kfuncs safe to call under bpf_spin_lock
instead of relying on the verifier's hard-coded allowlist (Kaitao
Cheng)
- Introduce global percpu data for BPF programs with libbpf probing
and bpftool skeleton support, and stop exposing uninitialized
kernel heap memory when copying per-CPU map values (Leon Hwang)
- Add s390 JIT support for load-acquire and store-release
instructions (Maxim Khmelevskii)
- Fix a CFI mismatch in the task work callback and an arm64 KASAN
false positive after bpf_throw() (Mykyta Yatsenko)
- Reject writes through untrusted BTF pointers and bound the
rdonly/rdwr_buf_size kfunc arguments (Nicholas Dudar)
- Invalidate RCU pointers only after the final spin unlock and
account for preempt and IRQ disabled regions as overlapping RCU
protection (Ning Ding)
- Support mixing bpf2bpf calls and tail calls on RV64, add signed
operations and 32-bit atomics to the RV32 JIT, and add timed
may_goto support (Pu Lehui, Kuan-Wei Chiu, Feng Jiang)
- Fix a use-after-free on mm_struct in bpf_find_vma() for foreign
tasks and an mmap_lock leak in the irq_work path (Sanghyun Park)
- Populate mmap-able BPF array map memory lazily which makes mmap()
O(1) instead of proportional to the map size (Song Liu)
- Introduce a jit_required flag and reject programs with inlined
helpers when no JIT is available, where the interpreter would
otherwise jump into an invalid address (Tiezhu Yang)
- Fix the x86 JIT per-CPU address resolution into an extended
register where the REX prefix dropped the high destination register
bit (Vineet Gupta)
- Reject MEM_ALLOC BTF accesses past object bounds, arena frees below
the arena base, and mixed arena and ordinary atomic paths (Yiyang

soc: devicetree updates for 7.3
There are two new mystery SoCs with very little public information
about them so far, Qualcomm's Cortex-A78C based "Shikra" and
Altera's Cortex-A720 based Agilex72 SOCFPGA.
We have also gained support for a couple of SoCs from the
2023/2024 timeframe that have been in the making for a while:
- The Apple platform gains support for M3 Pro, Max and Ultra SoC,
following the basic M3 support from 7.2.
- Samsung Exynos 1580 is a high-end mobile phone SoC from 2024
- Canaan K230 is a RISC-V based 64-bit AI SoC, based on the
earlier K210 chip
- Sophgo SG2000 is a mixed Arm/RISC-V chip that was already
supported using the Arm core but is now also added for RISC-V
along with several other variants of the cv18xx series
In terms of newly added machines we have reference platforms
for all the chips above, plus
- only four 32-bit Arm boards: two older phones and two
older industrial/embedded boards; using Allwinner, Qualcomm and
Rockchip SoCs
- Three laptops und three phones using Qualcomm SoCs
- Ten 64-bit Rockchips based single-board computers, along with one
NAS box and a game console.
- Seven industrial/embedded boards and modules using NXP i.MX8/9 SoCs.
- A Lenovo desktop box based on NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX
- A few more single-board computers based on Allwinnner A133,
Spacemit K1 and TI AM62.
As usual, there is a constant stream of minor cleanups and fixes
towards addressing the 'dt-check-style --mode strict' warnings,
and everyone is expected to address those warnings for new
submissions now.

docs: security-bugs: clarify some mandatory steps for AI reports
The security team is still seeing a lot of reports lacking a full patch and showing missing contents and formatting issues. Since AI assistants tend to be better than humans at following instructions, let's defer to coding-assistants.rst to follow mandatory steps, and insist on the plain text format, as well as asking for recipient addresses and an e-mail client setup hint to be mentioned early in the report for the reporter. Also add a link to https://github.com/masoncl/kres.git which contains way more advanced and detailed steps for those willing to go further. docs: coding-assistant: explain important steps when looking for bugs
Due to the increasing capabilities of available AI models, it's becoming common to see them used to find bugs anywhere. Unfortunately the quality of reports (especially when they're believed to be security relevant) is still lacking a lot. Let's add a section dedicated to bug finding, explaining the few mandatory steps (noting commit ID, writing the fix from the session that found the bug, building and testing, etc). This was tested both against Qwen3.6-27B-Architect-Polaris2-Fable-B-F451 running under Hermes, and Opus-5, and both followed the instructions to the letter, verifying their results and checking threat-model.rst to decline the vulnerability aspect. docs: threat-model: move fake devices out of "non production use"
When originally writing the "fake USB device" entry, it was difficult to find a suitable section for it and it ended up in "non production use" but that doesn't fit particularly well. Actually it's very similar to crafted filesystems, it's a matter of spec violation. Both drivers and FS are written against a spec, and what the threat model doesn't cover is out-of-spec use. So let's move the entry there and rename the crafted FS entry to "Non-conforming devices and media" instead. Overall it looks more consistent. The spec was tested agains Qwen3.6-27B-Architect-Polaris2-Fable-B-F451, Opus-5 and Gemini by reading the threat-model file, then reading a tens of FS and driver fixes, and they were now all properly classified as regular bugs, except two that Gemini and Opus rightfully classified as vulns (Qwen didn't spot the security potential but that's out of our scope). docs: threat-model: clarify "security bug" vs "vulnerability"
Throwing an LLM (Opus 5) at a file looking for random bugs after having read the threat model made it ignore certain bugs it found because "the threat model said they must be ignored". When asked why, the LLM rightfully reported the ambiguous wording used at a few places: "is not a security bug", which can also be read as "is not a bug", despite the rest of the document. That is particularly true when the LLM decides to look for info using grep. This change replaces "security bug" with "vulnerability" at a few places in order to remove this identified ambiguity, and uses "bugs" instead of issues in two such sentences to insist that what is described remains a bug. string: Remove strncpy() from the kernel
strncpy() has been a persistent source of bugs due to its ambiguous intended usage and frequently counter-intuitive semantics: it may not NUL-terminate the destination, and it unconditionally zero-pads to the full length, which isn't always needed. All former callers have been migrated[1] to: - strscpy() for NUL-terminated destinations - strscpy_pad() for NUL-terminated destinations needing zero-padding - strtomem_pad() for non-NUL-terminated fixed-width fields - memcpy_and_pad() for bounded copies with explicit padding - memcpy() for known-length copies Remove the generic implementation, its declaration, the FORTIFY_SOURCE wrapper, and associated tests. kbuild: Bump minimum version of LLVM for building the kernel to 17.0.1
The current minimum version of LLVM for building the kernel is 15.0.0. However, there are two deficiencies compared to GCC that were fixed in LLVM 17 that are starting to become more noticeable. The first was a bug in LLVM's scope checker [1], where all labels in a function were validated as potential targets of an asm goto statement, even if they were not listed in the asm goto statement as targets. This becomes particularly problematic when the cleanup attribute is used, as asm goto(... : label_a); ... label_a: ... int var __free(foo); asm goto(... : label_b); ... label_b: ... will trigger an error since the scope checker will complain that the cleanup variable would be skipped when jumping from the first asm goto to label_b (which obviously cannot happen). This issue was the catalyst for commit |

docs: submitting-patches: Clarify that "reviewer" is a person
Common understanding of word "Reviewer" is: a person performing a review
work [1]. Tools are not persons, thus cannot be reviewers in this term.
Also tools cannot make statements and cannot take responsibility for the
review.
Our docs already clearly mark that "Reviewed-by" must come from a
person:
- "By offering my Reviewed-by: tag, I state that:"
Usage of first person "I" and word "state"
- "A Reviewed-by tag is *a statement of opinion* that the patch is an
appropriate modification of the kernel without any remaining serious"
Only a person can make a statement of opinion.
- "Any interested reviewer (who has done the work) can offer a
Reviewed-by"
A person can offer a tag thus above does not grant the tool
permission to offer a tag.
However this might not be enough, so let's clarify that only a person
with a known identity can state the "Reviewer's statement of oversight".

Documentation: security-bugs: clarify requirements for AI-assisted reports
AI tools are increasingly used to assist in bug discovery. While these tools can identify valid issues, reports that are submitted without manual verification often lack context, contain speculative impact assessments, or include unnecessary formatting. Such reports increase triage effort, waste maintainers' time and may be ignored. Reports where the reporter has verified the issue and the proposed fix typically meet quality standards. This documentation outlines specific requirements for length, formatting, and impact evaluation to reduce the effort needed to deal with these reports. Documentation: security-bugs: explain what is and is not a security bug
The use of automated tools to find bugs in random locations of the kernel induces a raise of security reports even if most of them should just be reported as regular bugs. This patch is an attempt at drawing a line between what qualifies as a security bug and what does not, hoping to improve the situation and ease decision on the reporter's side. It defers the enumeration to a new file, threat-model.rst, that tries to enumerate various classes of issues that are and are not security bugs. This should permit to more easily update this file for various subsystem-specific rules without having to revisit the security bug reporting guide. Documentation: security-bugs: do not systematically Cc the security team
With the increase of automated reports, the security team is dealing with way more messages than really needed. The reporting process works well with most teams so there is no need to systematically involve the security team in reports.
