Summary of patch series in this merge:

 - "mm/rmap: index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by anonymous pgoff"
   (Lorenzo Stoakes):

Index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by their anonymous page offset to
resolve confusion around reverse mapping for zeroed and CoW'd
   file-backed memory.

Use this new VMA anonymous page offset tracking to eliminate index
conflicts and lay the foundation for scalable CoW performance
   improvements.

 - "promote mapped executable folios after first usage for MGLRU" (Baolin
   Wang):

Make MGLRU's protection of mapped executable file folios more
reliable. Follow the classical LRU's logic, promoting mapped executable
file folios after their first usage to give executable code a better
chance to stay in memory and improve workload performance.

 - "mm: vmscan: fix node reclaim ignoring swappiness parameter" (Ridong Chen):

Fix per-node proactive reclaim interface's ignoring the swappiness
parameter when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled by consolidating sc_swappiness()
into a single function that checks proactive_swappiness regardless of
   kernel configuration.

 - "mm/vmscan: reduce lru_lock contention via vmstat-derived scan-balance
   cost" (Usama Arif):

Reduce lru_lock contention in the reclaim path by deriving
scan-balance costs from vmstat counters rather than lock-acquired
   producer updates.

Read and decay these cost signals on the reclaim side under a
dedicated per-lruvec lock, reducing total LRU lock wait time by over 60%
   without impacting scan throughput.

 - "zram: fix zram issues reported by sashiko" (Sergey Senozhatsky):

Fix two low-risk zram bugs which Sashiko spotted in drive-by review.

 - "Honor XA_FLAGS_ACCOUNT in xas_split_alloc() and charge to folio's
   memcg" (Zi Yan):

Fix xas_split_alloc() by enabling target folio memcg charging during
splits and adding the missing __GFP_ACCOUNT flag for proper XArray node
   memory accounting.

 - "selftests/mm: use pattern matching in .gitignore" (Pratyush Mallick):

Replace hardcoded binary names in selftests/mm/.gitignore with a
generic pattern-matching rule to automatically ignore generated test
files and avoid manual updates when adding new tests.

 - "mm/page_ext: remove pgdat_page_ext_init()" (Sang-Heon Jeon):

Make the incompatibility between FLATMEM and NUMA explicit in
mm/Kconfig and remove the unused pgdat_page_ext_init() function.

 - "zram: fix zstd error paths and add parameter validation" (Haoqin Huang):

Clean up zram compression backends by removing redundant error
cleanup, adding parameter and dictionary validation, auto-prefixing
algorithm error logs, and resetting parameters prior to
   reinitialization.

 - "zram: fix stale scan bounds after reinitialization" (Longlong Xia):

Prevent out-of-bounds slot accesses during concurrent zram resets by
moving table scan bound calculations under dev_lock in writeback_store()
   and read_block_state().

 - "add anon mTHP collapse test cases" (Baolin Wang):

Extend selftests helper functions to support arbitrary page orders and
add new test cases and options for mTHP collapse in khugepaged.

 - "selftests/mm: Handle unsupported and transient test conditions"
   (Muhammad Usama Anjum):

Update MM selftests to report a SKIP status instead of a failure when
required kernel or filesystem features are unsupported, while adding
retry logic for transient page migration errors.

 - "mm/zswap: Fixes and improves the zswap shrink" (Hao Jia):

Fix the missing zswap global shrinker when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled
and extend shrink_memcg() to support batch writeback for improved
   writeback efficiency.

 - "alloc_tag: introduce IOCTL-based filtering for MAP" (Suren Baghdasaryan):

Introduce an IOCTL-based binary interface for memory allocation
profiling that enables kernel-side filtering before per-CPU counter
   aggregation.

This eliminates the text-parsing overhead of /proc/allocinfo and
provides up to a 20x speedup by transferring only filtered allocation
   data to userspace.

 - "better block swap batching and a different take on swap_ops v5"
   (Christoph Hellwig):

Refactor block swap I/O to use swap_iocb for batching instead of
single-bio requests and rebase the swap_ops interface, achieving faster
   swap throughput during kernel builds.

 - "mm: kmemleak: reduce transient false positives by confirming leaks"
   (Catalin Marinas):

Reduce false-positive kmemleak reports by combining two kmemleak
enhancements that add a second confirmation scan and a configurable
minimum unreferenced scan count module parameter.

 - "mm: kmemleak: default min_unref_scans to 2 for verbose kernels"
   (Breno Leitao):

Auto-scanning kernels can generate false-positive memory leak reports
on single scans, so this patch defaults min_unref_scans to 2 when
CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_VERBOSE is enabled to require a second confirming
   scan.

 - "swap_ops updates" (Christoph Hellwig):

Batching I/O for synchronous swap devices causes performance
regressions and filesystem-based swap suffers from double-indirection
overhead. This series resolves both issues by reintroducing per-folio
writes for synchronous swap and allowing filesystems to directly export
   their own swap_ops.

 - "mm/khugepaged: several cleanups" (Nico Pache):

khugepaged accumulated redundant state-checking patterns and outdated
comments following mTHP integration. Introduce dedicated helpers for
PTE validation and event counting while refreshing the internal
   documentation.

 - "maple_tree: lock checking and clean ups" (Liam Howlett):

Syzbot reports incorrectly blame memory management exit paths for
locking bugs, maple tree erase operations risk allocation failures
without gfp flags and internal documentation lacks clarity.

Improve lock error detection, update docs, fix race and allocation
edge cases and optimize erase allocations using a fallback to GFP_KERNEL
   | GFP_NOFAIL.

0e0ac326c5 memcg: move LRU size accounting on reparenting instead of copying it
When a memory cgroup is offlined its LRU folios are reparented to the
parent. lruvec_reparent_lru() splices the child's lists into the
parent's and credits the parent with the child's per-zone
lru_zone_size[], but never clears the child's copy, so the size is
copied rather than moved. lru_gen_reparent_memcg() does the same for
MGLRU.

The parent is left correct, credited with exactly the folios it took
over. The stale value sits on the child and nothing will correct it:
folio->memcg_data now resolves to the parent, so every later
update_lru_size() for those folios goes there.

Dying cgroups are not freed immediately and mem_cgroup_iter() still
walks them, so shrink_lruvec() keeps being called on them.
get_scan_count() reads the phantom counter through lruvec_lru_size() and
the scan loop then grinds through nr[] in SWAP_CLUSTER_MAX steps against
an empty list, for as long as the dead cgroup lives. Under MGLRU the
MGLRU scanner runs instead, but count_shadow_nodes() sums all of
NR_LRU_LISTS through lruvec_lru_size() and over-budgets the shadow node
limit just the same.

On one 251 GiB host a sweep of every mz->lru_zone_size[] found 380
counters describing folios on no list at all: 124777314 pages, 476 GiB,
1.89x the machine's RAM, across 57 cgroups. All were on memcgs with
CSS_DYING set and CSS_ONLINE clear, and parent/child pairs reported
byte-identical sizes.

LRU_UNEVICTABLE needs its size moved too. Its list is deliberately not
spliced because lruvec_init() poisons the head - the unevictable LRU is
imaginary and folios are never threaded on it - but the size is kept by
lruvec_add_folio()/lruvec_del_folio() and those folios account to the
parent from here on.

This depends on commit bf4ade7dbd ("memcg: keep folio's objcg same as
its node") and must not be backported ahead of it. Without that
invariant a folio's objcg can belong to another node, so a folio already
spliced onto the parent's list can still resolve to the child's lruvec
until the objcg's node is reparented in a later iteration of
memcg_reparent_objcgs(); clearing the child's counter early then lets
lruvec_del_folio() underflow it and trip the WARN_ONCE()/VM_BUG_ON() in
mem_cgroup_update_lru_size().

5d3fe91b70 mm/vmscan: fix comment logic in balance_pgdat
In balance_pgdat(), when the low watermark is met, processes sleeping on
pfmemalloc_wait are woken up because they are able to safely make forward
progress.

However, the comment incorrectly states "they should not be able",
which contradicts the actual code behavior. Fix this typo to accurately
reflect the logic.

f7e698e326 mm/mglru: fix and remove redundant unevictable folio handling
sort_folio() has a shortcut for moving folios that are no longer evictable
but are still sitting on a generation list. However, this shortcut is
buggy. It does not follow the PG_lru usage convention, and it has a more
serious issue.

Unevictable folios are not threaded on lists[LRU_UNEVICTABLE], so that
folio->lru can be reused to hold folio->mlock_count (see the comment in
lruvec_init()). Hence lruvec_add_folio() skips the list_add() for them,
and every other place that turns a folio unevictable initialises
mlock_count explicitly: lru_add() sets it to 0, __mlock_folio() and
__mlock_new_folio() set it to !!folio_test_mlocked(folio).  sort_folio()
sets nothing, and the lru_gen_del_folio() right above it may have already
poisoned folio->lru via list_del(), so mlock_count ends up aliasing
LIST_POISON2, which reads as 0x122, i.e. 290. The result is user
visible. On munlock, __munlock_folio() decrements that bogus count, finds
it still non-zero and bails out before clearing PG_mlocked, so the folio
remains unevictable and the Mlocked accounting stays inflated until the
folio is freed.

The shortcut also touches the LRU flags in the wrong order. It calls
lru_gen_del_folio() while PG_lru is still set, so a concurrent
folio_test_clear_lru() (e.g.  compaction, folio_isolate_lru()) can succeed
on a folio that has already been taken off the generation list, which may
lead to unexpected behavior.

So fix it by isolating them as common folios and letting the generic
shrink path cull them. This matches the classical LRU behavior, and there
should be no visible effect on the generic eviction or isolation behavior.

There is no performance concern either, such a folio goes through this
once, and then it is off the generation lists for good.

508537753b mm/mglru: fix young counter undercount for large folios
lru_gen_look_around() feeds its local 'young' counter into
suitable_to_scan(), which decides whether the current PMD is added to
the bloom filter and checked again on the next aging round.

The folio triggering the look-around is processed at function entry:
test_and_clear_young_ptes_notify() clears the accessed bits of the nr PTEs
it maps, and the function bails out if none of them is young. The loop
that follows therefore never recounts this folio, since its accessed bits
are already cleared. Every other young folio the loop finds is accounted
as a batch (young += nr), where nr is the number of consecutive PTEs it
maps. The triggering folio, however, still contributes a fixed young = 1
regardless of its size -- a leftover from before PTE batching. A large
triggering folio is thus accounted inconsistently with the rest of the
window.

Initialize young to nr so the triggering folio is accounted the same way
as any other young folio batch in the loop.

Note this is a deliberate overestimate, not a measured value. The
test-and-clear helper only reports whether any of the nr PTEs is young,
not how many were accessed, so the true number of accessed PTEs in a large
folio is unknown and can be smaller than nr. Counting the full batch is
intentional: the mm core tracks accessed/dirty state per folio, not per
page, so a per-page count is neither obtainable nor meaningful. The only
consumer is suitable_to_scan(), and the bloom filter it feeds tolerates
error. Overestimating is also the safe direction: at worst a PMD that saw
little access is rescanned, whereas underestimating could skip rescanning
a PMD whose folios are still hot and reclaim them incorrectly. (nr here
is the PTE batch size, not necessarily folio_nr_pages().)

52d85ca90c mm/swap: add a new swap_ops.h header to allow for pluggable swap ops
Add a new header to declare the swap_iocb, swap_ops and swap_ctx to allow
for swap_ops implementations outside of mm/page_io.c. This will be used
to remove the double indirection for file system-based swap. There is no
functional change, just a move of the declarations.

Note that there already is a swapops.h header, which is totally unrelated
to struct swap_ops. The close naming is a bit unfortunate, but I could
not think of a better name for this header.

swap_iocb to an on-stack context. This cleans up the code and prepares
for adding more fields and supporting batching multiple folios into a
single bio for block-based swap as well.

This new swap_io_ctx is required for all functions using it, the old way
of allowing a NULL iocb for some callers is removed to keep the interface
consistent. To reduce code duplication caused by this, a new
swap_cache_read_folio_sync helper is added to consolidate the code to call
swap_cache_read_folio with a local swap_io_ctx.

The unpug helpers are renamed to use the submit wording as they are
generalized.

7b9f4e5f81 mm/vmscan: reduce lru_lock contention via vmstat-derived scan-balance cost
The anon/file scan balance in get_scan_count() is driven by two scalars in
struct lruvec, anon_cost and file_cost, accumulated by every reclaim
producer under lruvec->lru_lock. The acquisition sites for cost work
specifically are:

  - shrink_inactive_list() re-takes lru_lock at function exit purely
    to call lru_note_cost_unlock_irq() with (nr_pageout, nr_scanned -
nr_reclaimed). One acquisition per inactive shrink.
  - shrink_active_list() does the same with (0, nr_rotated). One
    acquisition per active shrink.
  - workingset_refault() takes the lock via folio_lruvec_lock_irq()
purely to record the refault cost. One acquisition per refault.
  - prepare_scan_control() takes lru_lock just to snapshot the two
    scalars into sc->{anon,file}_cost.
  - lru_note_cost_unlock_irq() itself walks parent_lruvec and
re-acquires lru_lock on each ancestor to propagate the update,
adding O(memcg-depth) acquisitions per producer call.

This hurts because lru_lock is already a heavy contention point on
memory-heavy workloads: every isolate_lru_folios(), move_folios_to_lru()
and folio_add_lru() takes it. The cost work itself is trivial (two scalar
bumps and one comparison), but it contends with and causes contention for
actual LRU manipulation. The parent_lruvec() walk also multiplies
cost-update overhead by memcg hierarchy depth.

The balance formula for anon and file, respectively, is this:

    cost = nr_io * SWAP_CLUSTER_MAX + nr_rotated

Instead of recording cost and running averaging logic directly when these
events occur, snapshot running vmstat counters once per reclaim cycle and
derive the balance from event deltas since the last run.

Use PGROTATE_* from the preceding patch for the rotation input.
WORKINGSET_RESTORE_* and NR_VMSCAN_WRITE provide the remaining event
counters. Charge NR_VMSCAN_WRITE through lruvec stats so all inputs can
be sampled per lruvec and aggregated through the memcg hierarchy. This is
overall cheaper and has fewer lock acquisition sites.

Moving accumulation and decay to the reclaim side also improves the cost
model across reclaim gaps. With producer-side decay, events that happen
while reclaim is idle still age each other before reclaim ever samples the
costs. If a workload refaults a large anon set and then a smaller file
set before reclaim runs again, the later file activity can age the earlier
anon activity out of the cost model. The new scheme observes the whole
between-reclaim delta and decays anon and file proportionally, so the
scan-balance history better represents what happened since the last
reclaim pass.

A dedicated per-lruvec spinlock, cost_lock, serialises the delta
extraction, the cost->count update and the halving loop against concurrent
reclaimers in the same memcg+node.

NR_VMSCAN_WRITE is accounted at writeout(), so reclaim_stat.nr_pageout is
no longer needed and is removed.

memcg-v1's memory.stat anon_cost/file_cost is now sourced from
cost[].count instead of the removed lruvec anon_cost/file_cost fields.
The reported values only refresh when prepare_scan_control() runs and are
bounded at ~lrusize/4 by the halving loop; the scan-balance signal they
express is unchanged.

Under pure MGLRU the scan-balance signal itself is not consumed (both
prepare_scan_control() and get_scan_count() are short-circuited on the
MGLRU paths, and MGLRU's own type/tier selection comes from
read_ctrl_pos() on lrugen->{avg_refaulted,avg_total,refaulted,evicted},
not from anon_cost/file_cost). NR_VMSCAN_WRITE naturally covers writeout
from either reclaim implementation. The preceding patch also bumps
PGROTATE_{ANON,FILE} from evict_folios(), so rotation-driven reclaim work
is accounted consistently across both implementations.

1b089def0f mm/vmscan: add pgrotate_anon and pgrotate_file vmstat counters
Reclaim can spend substantial work on an LRU type without immediately
reclaiming or demoting a corresponding amount of memory. Record this work
in PGROTATE_ANON and PGROTATE_FILE.

For classic LRU reclaim:

  - Inactive-list reclaim adds nr_scanned - nr_reclaimed to the
corresponding anon/file counter when isolation succeeds.
  - Active-list reclaim adds referenced executable file folios that
are retained on the active list to PGROTATE_FILE. Active anon
reclaim does not contribute this component.

For MGLRU, add the number of initially isolated pages that remain
unreclaimed after both the initial and retry passes to the counter for the
selected anon/file type.

These counters are distinct from the existing pgrotated vm event.
pgrotated records an actual move to the inactive-list tail, primarily
after reclaim-marked writeback completes or failed invalidation leaves a
folio for accelerated reclaim. PGROTATE_ANON and PGROTATE_FILE measure
reclaim cost and do not imply that a folio moved to an LRU tail.

A subsequent patch will consume these counters for anon/file scan
balancing.

8a90519585 mm: vmscan: fix node reclaim ignoring swappiness parameter
sc_swappiness() had two separate definitions depending on CONFIG_MEMCG.
The !CONFIG_MEMCG variant simply returned vm_swappiness, ignoring the
proactive_swappiness value passed through scan_control. This caused the
swappiness parameter written to /sys/devices/system/node/nodeX/reclaim to
have no effect when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled.

Fix this by consolidating sc_swappiness() into a single definition that
checks sc->proactive_swappiness first, then falls back to
mem_cgroup_swappiness() which already handles both CONFIG_MEMCG and
!CONFIG_MEMCG.

Before fix (swappiness=max ignored, mostly file pages reclaimed):

    # cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

    # cat /proc/vmstat | grep pgsteal

    pgsteal_khugepaged 0
    pgsteal_proactive 18013
    pgsteal_anon 337
    pgsteal_file 17676

After fix (swappiness=max honored, anon pages reclaimed as expected):

0ee06ee38a mm: mglru: promote mapped executable folios after first usage
Classical LRU protects mapped executable file folios through commit
8cab4754d2 ("vmscan: make mapped executable pages the first class
citizen") and commit c909e99364 ("vmscan: activate executable pages
after first usage"), giving executable code a better chance to stay in
memory, avoiding IO thrashing and improving workload performance.

However, MGLRU's protection of mapped executable file folios is less
reliable. Although shrink_folio_list() checks references, the access flag
of mapped executable file folios may have already been checked and cleared
by lru_gen_look_around() or walk_mm().  Additionally, folio_update_gen()
or lru_gen_set_refs() only sets the 'PG_referenced' flag for mapped
executable file folios, which causes shrink_folio_list() to ignore the
first usage of these mapped executable file folios and reclaim them
easily.

Follow the classical LRU's logic, promoting mapped executable file folios
after their first usage in folio_update_gen() and lru_gen_set_refs(),
giving executable code a better chance to stay in memory.

On my 32-core Arm machine, with the memcg limit set to 2G, running 'make
-j32' to build kernel showed some improvement in sys time.

   bugs.

 - The 11 patch series "mm/damon/sysfs: kobject_del() directories that
users can create/remove" from SJ Park resolves an issue where delayed
sysfs directory removal under CONFIG_DEBUG_KOBJECT_RELEASE causes
creation failures due to duplicate directory names by adding missing
kobject_del() calls before creating new directories.

memcg_path setup, and adds a test case for it in sysfs.py.

 - The 2 patch series "selftests/damon: test kdamond refresh_ms" from
Ruslan Valiyev introduces selftest coverage for DAMON's refresh_ms sysfs
feature by updating the test control module and verifying that scheme
stats update automatically without manual intervention.

   contains miscellaneous DAMON fixups.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/damon/core: detect internal variation above
max_nr_regions/2" from Jiayuan Chen fixes DAMON's region splitting
behavior when region counts exceed half the maximum budget by
dynamically scaling down the split fraction as the limit approaches,
preventing large regions from staying un-split, and adds corresponding
   KUnit test coverage.

 - The 6 patch series "mm: preparatory patches for PMD level swap
entries" from Usama Arif refactors and cleans up PMD softleaf helpers,
call sites, and architecture flags to lay the groundwork for a follow-up
series that introduces PMD page table swap entries.

 - The 11 patch series "mm/damon: update, optimize, and clean up doc,
tests, and code" from SJ Park updates DAMON design and ABI
documentation, expands unit and selftest coverage, optimizes

freeing of reserved vmemmap pages on the way.

 - The 7 patch series "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter
commits" from SJ Park ensures that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter
is properly updated when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime,
matching the behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and
renames existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to
probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to
   maintain measurement accuracy.

 - The 3 patch series "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm"
from xu xin resolves a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck
where thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended
lock contention. By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap
walk, it reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms
down to under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes
   under memory pressure.

 - The 3 patch series "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h"

vmalloc and sparse into new headers.

 - The 2 patch series "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()"
from xu xin applies the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm()
to collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during
KSM memory error handling. It hoists loop-invariant address
initialization and restricts the anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to
a targeted page offset range, reducing redundant checks and improving
   lookup efficiency.

   the tests are not satisfied.

 - The 19 patch series "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only
monitoring" from SJ Park introduces attribute-weighted region management
in DAMON, allowing users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as
page sizes or cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring.

By assigning weights to attribute probes, DAMON can completely disable
access tracking and adjust monitoring regions based on weighted
probe-hit counters to optimize monitoring quality for attribute-focused
   workloads.

 - The 8 patch series "mm/hmm: Add mmap lock-drop support for
userfaultfd-backed mappings" from Stanislav Kinsburskii extends
hmm_range_fault() to support userfaultfd-backed regions by allowing the
mmap lock to be dropped during fault handling via a new
   hmm_range_fault_locked() helper.

By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock
release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd regions
while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers.

 - The 33 patch series "mm: make VMA page offset handling more
consistent" from Lorenzo Stoakes cleans up and standardizes how
vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and manipulated across file-backed and
   anonymous mappings in the kernel.

It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(),
   vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while renaming
rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their functionality.

These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that will
unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd folios.

 - The 3 patch series "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks"
from Usama Arif addresses kernel panics and state corruption caused by
MM walk callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries
   created during HMM migrations.

It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock() properly
recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present THP or a
   standard migration entry.

 - The 5 patch series "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" from Dev Jain
refactors try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb, anonymous-lazyfree,
and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated functions, laying the
structural groundwork for batched anonymous large folio unmapping.

additions" from Song Hu fixes typos and fills in missing entries in the
   DAMON sysfs ABI document.

 - The 10 patch series "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs"
from Gregory Price introduces an atomic sysfs state attribute and
supporting DAX/MM infrastructure to prevent userland races when
offlining and removing entire memory regions.

By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it
enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward
   compatibility.

 - The 13 patch series "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t"
from Lorenzo Stoakes continues transitioning the kernel from the
deprecated vm_flags_t type to vma_flags_t across core memory management
   infrastructure.

It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(),
unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like
   mlock, mprotect, and mremap.

 - The 2 patch series "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" from
xu xin refactors mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify
duplicate slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds
code documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must
remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions.

 - The 10 patch series "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields"
from SJ Park cleans up DAMON core structures by consistently marking
internal-only fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper
   direct access from outer layers.

It enforces encapsulation across core structures including
   damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to
interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct
   members.

 - The 6 patch series "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL
de-ref and races" from SJ Park addresses potential infinite loops, NULL
dereferences, and race conditions identified in DAMON.

It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a
NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring
accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on
RT/UP" from Brendan Jackman fixes an NMI safety flaw in
__free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT
kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks via non-PCP or isolated
   migration paths.

It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation
risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory
   hotplug or large allocation frees.

 - The 4 patch series "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent
cleanups" from Brendan Jackman cleans up and updates page allocator
   nomenclature, documentation, and debug assertions.

It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming
convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from
high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete VM_BUG_ON()
   assertions in allocation paths.

 - The 3 patch series "mm/mseal: further cleanups" from Lorenzo Stoakes
refactors and simplifies the mseal implementation by clarifying API
boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity.

It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a
dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO, eliminates
mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only to
current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no
   functional changes intended.

 - The 4 patch series "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up
per-node proactive reclaim" from Ridong Chen resolves reclaim behavior
bugs and cleans up function parameters across memory reclaim paths.

It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so
unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page
cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead of
collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete gfp_mask
   parameter from __node_reclaim().

 - The 6 patch series "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" from Kefeng Wang
cleans up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it removes
the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP pages as
   non-resident.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants"
from Kiryl Shutsemau implements two trivial cleanups in the folio split
   API.

 - The 7 patch series "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit
exec expectation bugs" from SJ Park resolves minor operational and
testing bugs in DAMON identified by Sashiko. It initializes the
damos->last_applied field to prevent occasional efficiency degradation
and fixes invalid memory accesses in DAMON KUnit tests during test
   failure handling.

 - The 3 patch series "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" from Jinjiang Tu
cleans up and refactors stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags
   without altering functionality.

It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag
bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*()
helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling.

 - The 3 patch series "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" from Dev Jain
extends batched folio unmapping support to file folios within
userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching capabilities
   to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed().

This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in
try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control
   flow and complexity.

 - The 3 patch series "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up
early_ioremap_reset()" from Sang-Heon Jeon clarifies and cleans up the
   architecture-specific usage of __late_set_fixmap() and
   __late_clear_fixmap() after early_ioremap_reset().

It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset()
must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset calls
in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures.

 - The 4 patch series "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" from
Johannes Weiner addresses severe performance regressions, swap storms,
and spurious OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure
   in Meta production.

It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation
requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at
pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather
   than spinning unproductively.

 - The 2 patch series "zram: lockmap tweaks" from Sebastian Siewior
optimizes and fixes lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating
per-entry lockmaps and isolating lock classes across multiple instances.

It reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map instances
with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic lock_class_key
to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports when different zram
devices are backed by distinct filesystems.

Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and
manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel

It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(),
   vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while
renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their
   functionality.

These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that
will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd
   folios.

 - "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif)

Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk
callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries
   created during HMM migrations

It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock()
properly recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present
THP or a standard migration entry.

 - "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" (Dev Jain)

   Refactor try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb,
anonymous-lazyfree, and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated
functions, laying the structural groundwork for batched anonymous
   large folio unmapping.

 - "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and additions" (Song Hu)

Fix typos and fills in missing entries in the DAMON sysfs ABI
   document

 - "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs" (Gregory Price)

Introduce an atomic sysfs state attribute and supporting DAX/MM
infrastructure to prevent userland races when offlining and removing
   entire memory regions

By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it
enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward
   compatibility.

 - "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t" (Lorenzo Stoakes)

Continue transitioning the kernel from the deprecated vm_flags_t type
to vma_flags_t across core memory management infrastructure.

It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(),
unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like
   mlock, mprotect, and mremap.

 - "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin)

Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate
slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code
documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must
remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions.

 - "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park)

Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only
fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access
   from outer layers.

It enforces encapsulation across core structures including
   damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to
interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct
   members.

 - "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races"
   (SJ Park)

Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race
   conditions identified in DAMON

It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a
NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring
accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races.

 - "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan
   Jackman)

Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages
on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks
via non-PCP or isolated migration paths.

It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation
risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory
   hotplug or large allocation frees.

 - "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan
   Jackman)

Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and
   debug assertions.

It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming
convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from
high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete
   VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths.

 - "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes)

Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API
boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity.

It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a
   dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO,
eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only
to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no
   functional changes intended.

 - "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive
   reclaim" (Ridong Chen)

Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across
   memory reclaim paths

It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so
unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page
cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead
of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete
   gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim().

 - "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang)

Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it
removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP
   pages as non-resident.

 - "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau)

Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API

 - "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation
   bugs" (SJ Park)

Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by
Sashiko. It initializes the damos->last_applied field to prevent
occasional efficiency degradation and fixes invalid memory accesses
in DAMON KUnit tests during test failure handling.

 - "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" (Jinjiang Tu)

Clean up and refactor stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags
   without altering functionality.

It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag
bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*()
helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling.

 - "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" (Dev Jain)

Extend batched folio unmapping support to file folios within
userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching
   capabilities to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed().

This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in
try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control
   flow and complexity.

 - "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up early_ioremap_reset()"
   (Sang-Heon Jeon)

Clarify and clean up the architecture-specific usage of
   __late_set_fixmap() and __late_clear_fixmap() after
   early_ioremap_reset()

It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset()
must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset
calls in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures.

 - "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" (Johannes Weiner)

Address severe performance regressions, swap storms, and spurious
OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure in Meta
   production

It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation
requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at
pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather
   than spinning unproductively.

 - "zram: lockmap tweaks" (Sebastian Siewior)

Optimize and fix lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating
per-entry lockmaps and isolate lock classes across multiple instances

This reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map
instances with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic
lock_class_key to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports
when different zram devices are backed by distinct filesystems.

Nothing promises direct reclaim returns in bounded time, and the scan loop
in shrink_lruvec() only calls cond_resched(), which is a no-op on
PREEMPTION kernels. Involuntary preemption is not a Tasks-RCU quiescent
state, so the reclaiming task never reports one and becomes a holdout.

Upgrade it to cond_resched_tasks_rcu_qs(), which reports a quiescent state
even when cond_resched() does nothing.

430e4cdcc6 mm/mglru: fix anon-only reclaim evicting file pages when swappiness=max
The previous patch fixed this issue for the traditional LRU. The same
problem exists in MGLRU [1]: when swappiness=max (SWAPPINESS_ANON_ONLY) is
set, reclaim is expected to evict anonymous pages exclusively, but file
pages can still be reclaimed when anonymous pages cannot be reclaimed
(e.g. no swap and no demotion target).

Fix it the same way as the traditional LRU: keep returning
SWAPPINESS_ANON_ONLY in get_swappiness(), and return 0 from
get_nr_to_scan() when SWAPPINESS_ANON_ONLY is set but anon pages cannot be
reclaimed. Since get_nr_to_scan() decides how much MGLRU scans, returning
0 skips the scan entirely and avoids the useless scan work when there is
nothing eligible to reclaim.

The test result:

b33f6e98b3 mm: vmscan: drop unused gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim()
Commit 57972c78e6 ("mm/vmscan: make __node_reclaim() more generic")
moved the scan_control construction out to the callers and passed the
struct in by pointer. After that change every use of the gfp mask inside
__node_reclaim() goes through sc->gfp_mask, leaving the gfp_mask parameter
unused. Just remove the dead parameter and update the callers
accordingly. No functional change.

b27caeb46c mm: vmscan: propagate real error code from per-node proactive reclaim
It has been observed that per-node proactive reclaim always returns
-EAGAIN when any error occurs. As discussed in the mailing list [1], the
interface should distinguish between cases where no reclaimable memory is
left and where another entity is concurrently using the same interface.
Propagate the real error code, consistent with how memcg proactive reclaim
handles errors.

e26f7a91de mm/vmscan: fix anon-only reclaim evicting file pages when swappiness=max
Patch series "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node
proactive reclaim", v4.

Fixes and one cleanup.

Patch 1 fixes "swappiness=max": the anon-only test in get_scan_count() sat
after the "cannot reclaim anon" check, so when no anon was reclaimable the
request fell back to SCAN_FILE and evicted page cache instead.

Patch 2 fixes reclaim_store() collapsing every error into -EAGAIN, so
callers can no longer tell an invalid argument from a busy interface;
propagate the real error code, matching the memcg path.

Patch 3 drops the now-unused gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim().

Patch 4 fixes the same "swappiness=max" issue for MGLRU.

This patch (of 4):

As Qi mentioned [1], when swappiness=max (SWAPPINESS_ANON_ONLY) is set,
the reclaim logic is expected to reclaim anonymous pages exclusively.
However, due to the current ordering of checks in get_scan_count(), file
pages may still be evicted if can_reclaim_anon_pages() returns false,
which contradicts the semantics of SWAPPINESS_ANON_ONLY.

Reproducer in a cgroup holding 64M of file cache, with no swap configured:

Before (file cache is wrongly evicted):
    # cat memory.stat
    anon 196608
    file 67178496
    pgscan_proactive 0
    # echo "64M swappiness=max" > memory.reclaim

Fix this by bailing out early when SWAPPINESS_ANON_ONLY is set and no
anonymous pages are reclaimable, before falling back to file reclaim.

ff3d40545f mm: let node_reclaim() return the number of pages reclaimed
There is only one caller, get_page_from_freelist(), and it does not make
any use of the reason for skipping the reclaim, nor does it make any
distinction between a full and partially successful reclaim.

Therefore, node_reclaim() can simply return the number of pages that have
been reclaimed, same as __node_reclaim(), and the NODE_RECLAIM_xxx macros
can be removed.

There is one small change of behavior when __node_reclaim() was attempted
but returned zero. The allocation now skips the zone immediately; before
this patch, the zone watermarks were checked first. I believe it was an
oversight rather than intention, because the chances that zone watermark
is OK after __node_reclaim() did not reclaim any pages are very close to
zero.

Originally, I was looking for occurences of NODE_RECLAIM_SOME and
NODE_RECLAIM_SUCCESS, but I couldn't find any. That's because they are
typecast from the result of a relational operator. This seemed a bit
fragile, so I dug a bit deeper and came up with this proposed cleanup.

2253208bec mm/swap: colocate page-cluster sysctl with swap readahead
Patch series "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations", v9.

This series splits folio LRU and swap cleanup into three steps:

  - move the page-cluster sysctl next to swap readahead in
    mm/swap_state.c
  - rename mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c after the swap-specific code
    moves out
  - move MM-internal reclaim declarations out of include/linux/swap.h

After this series, swap cache and swap-in readahead stay in
mm/swap_state.c. Folio LRU helpers live in mm/folio.c, and MM-internal
reclaim/workingset declarations move from include/linux/swap.h to
mm/internal.h (public LRU helpers used outside mm/ remain in swap.h).

The first patch handles the swap-specific page-cluster state before the
file rename, so the rename commit only carries folio LRU code. The last
patch keeps the LRU helpers used outside mm/ in include/linux/swap.h and
moves the internal reclaim/workingset declarations to mm/internal.h.

This patch (of 3):

page_cluster and the vm.page-cluster sysctl are only used by swap-in
readahead in swap_state.c. Move them out of swap.c together with
swap_readahead_setup(), and make page_cluster static to that file.

Rename swap_setup() while moving it as well. The helper is internal to MM
and now only sets up swap readahead defaults and its sysctl hook, so the
more specific name matches its reduced scope.

Call swap_readahead_setup() from swap_init() after moving it, keeping the
readahead defaults and sysctl registration with swap_state.c
initialization.

swap_setup() previously lived in mm/swap.c, which is built
unconditionally, so the vm.page-cluster sysctl was registered also on
CONFIG_SWAP=n kernels. After moving the setup into swap_state.c, which is
built only when CONFIG_SWAP is enabled, vm.page-cluster is no longer
registered there. The knob only tunes swap-in readahead and had no effect
without swap.

Split blk_plug into a separate helper to reduce the amount of code

reduce compile times.

In io_uring this requires pulling in a few other headers explicitly that

d0850de699 mm: split out internal page_alloc.h
internal.h is a bit bloated, seems like time for a page_alloc.h.

Where it wasn't obvious, the heuristic for deciding what goes into this
new header was "does it support/correspond to a definition in
mm/page_alloc.c?"

Only need to include it from ~20 .c files out of ~150 so this does seem
like a genuine reduction in scopes, which is nice. And there's no
circular internal.h<->page_alloc.h dependency, so it seems worthwhile to
split this up before that inevitably emerges!

afa433c327 mm: vmscan: remove the redundant FOLIOREF_RECLAIM_CLEAN logic
folio_check_references() will return FOLIOREF_RECLAIM_CLEAN for referenced
file folios, indicating that we can proceed to reclaim clean file folios
or keep them if they are dirty file folios. However, after commit
6b0dfabb35 ("fs: Remove aops->writepage"), we no longer attempt to write
back filesystem folios through reclaim. Instead, we always activate dirty
file folios and wakeup the flush workers to write them back. As a result,
the FOLIOREF_RECLAIM_CLEAN logic is now redundant: for dirty file folios,
we will no longer reach the 'references == FOLIOREF_RECLAIM_CLEAN' branch
in shrink_folio_list().

Additionally, lazyfree folios are also placed on the file LRU list, but if
a lazyfree folio becomes dirty, try_to_unmap() will fail and thus prevent
reclaim of the re-dirtied lazyfree folios.

Therefore, we can drop the FOLIOREF_RECLAIM_CLEAN-related logic.

dc37771a43 mm: vmscan: abort proactive reclaim early when freezing for suspend
Proactive reclaim (triggered via memory.reclaim or node sysfs) checks for
pending signals in its outer loop in user_proactive_reclaim(). However,
the inner reclaim loops—specifically scanning cgroups in shrink_many()
and evicting/aging folios in try_to_shrink_lruvec()—can run for a long
time before returning to the outer loop, especially on systems with many
cgroups or large memory sizes.

During system suspend, the PM freezer attempts to freeze all tasks by
sending fake signals (setting TIF_SIGPENDING). Because the inner loops do
not check for pending signals, the proactive reclaim task can remain stuck
in kernel space for seconds, failing to enter the refrigerator in a timely
manner. This leads to suspend failures due to freeze timeouts, a behavior
observed on Android devices.

This latency issue is specific to proactive reclaim because of its large,
user-defined reclaim targets (could be gigabytes). Since commit
287d5fedb3 ("mm: memcg: use larger batches for proactive reclaim"),
proactive reclaim uses larger decaying batch sizes (starting at 1/4 of the
remaining target) to maintain throughput. This keeps the task in the
inner reclaim loop for extended periods. In contrast, reactive reclaim
(global/memcg) uses small targets (SWAP_CLUSTER_MAX, typically 32 pages),
allowing it to return to the outer loop and check signals frequently.

To fix this, add a signal_pending() check to should_abort_scan() for
proactive reclaim paths. Since should_abort_scan() is called within the
inner scanning and eviction loops, this allows proactive reclaim to abort
early and return to the outer loop in user_proactive_reclaim().

Additionally, return -ERESTARTSYS instead of -EINTR in
user_proactive_reclaim(). When interrupted by system suspend, returning
-ERESTARTSYS allows the task to enter the refrigerator and automatically
restart the syscall upon resume, making the freezer transparent to
userspace. For real signals, the signal layer will either restart the
syscall (if SA_RESTART is set) or return -EINTR to userspace.

This fix specifically targets Multi-Gen LRU (MGLRU). Classic LRU's scan
targets per iteration are strictly bounded by get_scan_count(), which
ensures it returns to the outer loop more frequently.

The check in should_abort_scan() is limited to proactive reclaim
(sc->proactive) to avoid inadvertently affecting reactive reclaim paths,
and is wrapped in unlikely() as it is a slow path.

de4660898b mm: mglru: fix stale batch updates after memcg reparenting
The mglru page table walker batches per-generation size deltas in
walk->nr_pages while walking page tables without holding the lruvec lock.
The reset_batch_size() later folds those deltas into walk->lruvec under
the lruvec lock.

The page table walker can run concurrently with the memcg reparenting path
as follows:

CPU0 CPU1
====                           ====

walk_mm
--> walk_page_range
    --> update_batch_size
        --> walk->nr_pages += delta

                              mem_cgroup_css_offline
                              --> memcg_reparent_objcgs
                                  --> lock lruvec
                                      lru_gen_reparent_memcg
--> reparent child folios to parent
                                      unlock lruvec

    lock lruvec
    reset_batch_size
    --> child lrugen->nr_pages += delta

This will trigger the following warning in lru_gen_exit_memcg():

	VM_WARN_ON_ONCE(memchr_inv(lruvec->lrugen.nr_pages, 0,
				   sizeof(lruvec->lrugen.nr_pages)));

And the user-visible impact of underestimated nr_pages in MGLRU was
premature OOMs because MGLRU does not try to reclaim memory when nr_pages
reaches zero, but there are still more pages.

To fix it, make reset_batch_size() check CSS_DYING under RCU before
flushing the pending batch. A non-dying memcg keeps the original lruvec
stable against RCU-delayed offlining; a dying memcg redirects the deltas
to the first non-dying ancestor.

44238b122a mm/vmscan: pass NULL to trace vmscan node reclaim
The tracepoint for node relcaims takes a `struct mem_cgroup *`
as the third argument, so pass NULL instead of 0 to fix warning
about using an integer as a pointer.

Fixes the following warnings:

mm/vmscan.c:6753:66: warning: Using plain integer as NULL pointer
mm/vmscan.c:6757:58: warning: Using plain integer as NULL pointer
mm/vmscan.c:7818:60: warning: Using plain integer as NULL pointer

 Patchsets in this merge:

 - The 2 patch series "selftests/mm: clean up build output and verbosity"
from Li Wang removes some noise from the MM selftests build out.

 - The 3 patch series "mm: Free contiguous order-0 pages efficiently"
from Ryan Roberts speeds up the freeing of a batch of 0-order pages by
first scanning them for coalescing opportunities. This is applicable to
vfree() and to the releasing of frozen pages.

 - The 11 patch series "mm/damon: introduce DAMOS failed region quota
charge ratio" from SeongJae Park addresses a DAMOS usability issue: The
DAMOS quota often exhausts prematurely because it charges for all memory
attempted, causing slow and inconsistent performance when actions fail
   on unreclaimable memory.

To fix this, a new feature lets users set a smaller, flexible quota
charge ratio (via a numerator and denominator) for failed regions.
Since failed actions cause less overhead, reducing their quota cost
ensures more predictable and efficient DAMOS processing

 - The 8 patch series "selftests/cgroup: improve zswap tests robustness
and support large page sizes" from Li Wang fixes various spurious
failures and improves the overall robustness of the cgroup zswap
   selftests.

 - The 3 patch series "fix MAP_DROPPABLE not supported errno" from
Anthony Yznaga fixes an issue in the mlock selftests on arm32.

shared" from Breno Leitao does some maintenance work in the huge_memory
   code.

 - The 3 patch series "treewide: fixup gfp_t printks" from Brendan
Jackman uses the special vprintf() gfp_t conversion in various places.

initialization" from Muchun Song fixes several bugs in the vmemmap
optimization, mainly around incorrect page accounting and memmap
initialization in the DAX and memory hotplug paths. It also fixes
pageblock migratetype initialization and struct page initialization for
   ZONE_DEVICE compound pages.

 - The 4 patch series "mm/damon: repost non-hotfix reviewed patches in
damon/next tree" from is a sprinkle of unrelated minor bugfixes for
   DAMON.

remove this function from the tree, replacing it with folio_mapped().

 - The 10 patch series "mm/damon: let DAMON be paused and resumed" from
SeongJae Park permits DAMON to be paused and resumed without losing its
   current state.

 - The 3 patch series "kasan: hw_tags: Disable tagging for stack and
page-tables" from Muhammad Usama Anjum simplifies and speeds up kasan by
removing its ineffective tagging of stacks and page tables.

 - The 7 patch series "mm/damon/reclaim,lru_sort: monitor all system rams
by default" from SeongJae Park simplifies deployment on diverse hardware
like NUMA systems by updating DAMON_RECLAIM and DAMON_LRU_SORT to
automatically monitor the physical address range covering all System RAM
areas by default, replacing the overly restrictive behavior that only
targeted the single largest memory block to save on negligible overhead.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/damon/sysfs: document filters/ directory as
deprecated" from SeongJae Park updates some DAMON docs.

 - The 8 patch series "mm: use spinlock guards for zone lock" from Dmitry

   mechanisms.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/filemap: tighten mmap_miss hit accounting" from
fujunjie fixes a flaw where the mmap_miss counter over-credited page
cache hits during fault-arounds and page-fault retries. This results in
significant reduction of redundant synchronous mmap readahead I/O,
drastically cutting down execution time and gigabytes read for sparse
random or strided memory access workloads.

 - The 2 patch series "selftests/cgroup: Fix false positive failures in
test_percpu_basic" from Li Wang fixes a couple of false-positives in the
   cgroup kmem selftests.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/damon/reclaim: support monitoring intervals

with a view to removing it entirely in a later series.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/damon: validate min_region_size to be power of
2" from Liew Rui Yan prevents users from passing a non-power-of-2 value
of `addr_unit', as this later results in undesirable behavior.

   related code.

 - The 12 patch series "mm, swap: swap table phase IV: unify allocation"
from Kairui Song unifies the allocation and charging of anon and shmem
swap in folios, provides better synchronization, consolidates the
metadata management, hence dropping the static array and map, and
   improves performance.

 - The 28 patch series "mm/damon: introduce data attributes monitoring"
from SeongJae Park extends DAMON for monitoring general data attributes
   other than accesses.

 - The 5 patch series "mm/vmalloc: free unused pages on vrealloc()

32a2b73ec2 mm/compaction: cap compact_gap() at COMPACT_CLUSTER_MAX
compact_gap() returns 2 << order, which is used as watermark headroom in
__compaction_suitable() and as a threshold in kswapd reclaim decisions.
The computed value scales exponentially by order. For order-9 THP
allocations this evaluates to 1024 pages, but the compaction free
scanner's working set is bounded by COMPACT_CLUSTER_MAX (32 pages). The
scanner stops isolating free pages once it matches the migration batch.
The current gap over-reserves by 32x.

On fragmented production hosts, kswapd will try to reclaim up to the gap,
but it only reaches that threshold in 18% of attempts. As a result,
reclaim continues in the majority of cases despite many lower-order free
pages being available. The over-sized gap also causes 46% of order-9
compaction suitability checks to fail unnecessarily: the zone has
sufficient free pages for the scanner to operate, but not enough to clear
the inflated threshold.

Cap compact_gap() at COMPACT_CLUSTER_MAX so the watermark headroom
reflects the scanner's actual capacity. This function is used by two key
heuristics. The first is when kswapd can stop high-order reclaim and
downgrade to order-0 balancing, allowing kcompactd to be woken for the
original higher allocation order. The second is zone suitability
checking, where the smaller gap allows compaction to start sooner.

Note that orders 0-4 are unaffected since their gap is already less than
or equal to COMPACT_CLUSTER_MAX.

A/B test on v6.13-based instagram production hosts (64GB, 60s
measurement):

Unpatched (43 hosts)
pgscan_kswapd (mean/host): ~1.6M
reclaim efficiency (steal/scan): 83.8%
per-compaction success (success/stall): 2.1%
THP success (alloc/alloc+fallback): 4.9%
forced lru_add_drain (mean/host): ~107K

Patched (59 hosts)
pgscan_kswapd (mean/host): ~449K
reclaim efficiency (steal/scan): 91.0%
per-compaction success (success/stall): 28.3%
THP success (alloc/alloc+fallback): 17.2%
forced lru_add_drain (mean/host): ~64K

39376b9cac mm/vmscan: unify writeback reclaim statistic and throttling
Currently MGLRU and non-MGLRU handle the reclaim statistic and writeback
handling very differently, especially throttling. Basically MGLRU just
ignored the throttling part.

Let's just unify this part, use a helper to deduplicate the code so both
setups will share the same behavior.

Test using following reproducer using bash:

echo "Setup a slow device using dm delay"
  dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/tmp/backing bs=1M count=2048
  LOOP=$(losetup --show -f /var/tmp/backing)
  mkfs.ext4 -q $LOOP
  echo "0 $(blockdev --getsz $LOOP) delay $LOOP 0 0 $LOOP 0 1000" | \
      dmsetup create slow_dev
  mkdir -p /mnt/slow && mount /dev/mapper/slow_dev /mnt/slow

  echo "Start writeback pressure"
  sync && echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
  mkdir /sys/fs/cgroup/test_wb
  echo 128M > /sys/fs/cgroup/test_wb/memory.max
  (echo $BASHPID > /sys/fs/cgroup/test_wb/cgroup.procs && \
      dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/slow/testfile bs=1M count=192)

  echo "Clean up"
  echo "0 $(blockdev --getsz $LOOP) error" | dmsetup load slow_dev
  dmsetup resume slow_dev
  umount -l /mnt/slow && sync
  dmsetup remove slow_dev

Before this commit, `dd` will get OOM killed immediately if MGLRU is
enabled. Classic LRU is fine.

After this commit, throttling is now effective and no more spin on LRU or
premature OOM. Stress test on other workloads also looks good.

Global throttling is not here yet, we will fix that separately later.

f37d3708b6 mm/mglru: simplify and improve dirty writeback handling
Right now the flusher wakeup mechanism for MGLRU is less responsive and
unlikely to trigger compared to classical LRU. The classical LRU wakes
the flusher if one batch of folios passed to shrink_folio_list is
unevictable due to under writeback. MGLRU instead check and handle this
after the whole reclaim loop is done.

We previously even saw OOM problems due to passive flusher, which were
fixed but still not perfect [1].

We have just unified the dirty folio counting and activation routine, now
just move the dirty flush into the loop right after shrink_folio_list.
This improves the performance a lot for workloads involving heavy
writeback and prepares for throttling too.

Test with YCSB workloadb showed a major performance improvement:

Before this series:
Throughput(ops/sec): 62485.02962831822
AverageLatency(us): 500.9746963330107
pgpgin 159347462
workingset_refault_file 34522071

After this commit:
Throughput(ops/sec): 80857.08510208207
AverageLatency(us): 386.653262968934
pgpgin 112233121
workingset_refault_file 19516246

The performance is a lot better with significantly lower refault. We also
observed similar or higher performance gain for other real-world
workloads.

We were concerned that the dirty flush could cause more wear for SSD: that
should not be the problem here, since the wakeup condition is when the
dirty folios have been pushed to the tail of LRU, which indicates that
memory pressure is so high that writeback is blocking the workload
already.

75d4c3f5fb mm/mglru: use the common routine for dirty/writeback reactivation
Currently MGLRU will move the dirty writeback folios to the second oldest
gen instead of reactivate them like the classical LRU. This might help to
reduce the LRU contention as it skipped the isolation. But as a result we
will see these folios at the LRU tail more frequently leading to
inefficient reclaim.

Besides, the dirty / writeback check after isolation in shrink_folio_list
is more accurate and covers more cases. So instead, just drop the special
handling for dirty writeback, use the common routine and re-activate it
like the classical LRU.

This should in theory improve the scan efficiency. These folios will be
rotated back to LRU tail once writeback is done so there is no risk of
hotness inversion. And now each reclaim loop will have a higher success
rate. This also prepares for unifying the writeback and throttling
mechanism with classical LRU, we keep these folios far from tail so
detecting the tail batch will have a similar pattern with classical LRU.

The micro optimization that avoids LRU contention by skipping the
isolation is gone, which should be fine. Compared to IO and writeback
cost, the isolation overhead is trivial.

And using the common routine also keeps the folio's referenced bits (tier
bits), which could improve metrics in the long term. Also no more need to
clean reclaim bit as the common routine will make use of it.

Note the common routine updates a few throttling and writeback counters,
which are not used, and never have been for the MGLRU case. We will start
making use of these in later commits.

acd22fbb9f mm/mglru: remove redundant swap constrained check upon isolation
Remove the swap-constrained early reject check upon isolation. This check
is a micro optimization when swap IO is not allowed, so folios are
rejected early. But it is redundant and overly broad since
shrink_folio_list() already handles all these cases with proper
granularity.

Notably, this check wrongly rejected lazyfree folios, and it doesn't cover
all rejection cases. shrink_folio_list() uses may_enter_fs(), which
distinguishes non-SWP_FS_OPS devices from filesystem-backed swap and does
all the checks after folio is locked, so flags like swap cache are stable.

This check also covers dirty file folios, which are not a problem now
since sort_folio() already bumps dirty file folios to the next generation,
but causes trouble for unifying dirty folio writeback handling.

And there should be no performance impact from removing it. We may have
lost a micro optimization, but unblocked lazyfree reclaim for NOIO
contexts, which is not a common case in the first place.

12316f7902 mm/mglru: don't abort scan immediately right after aging
Right now, if eviction triggers aging, the reclaimer will abort. This is
not the optimal strategy for several reasons.

Aborting the reclaim early wastes a reclaim cycle when under pressure, and
for concurrent reclaim, if the LRU is under aging, all concurrent
reclaimers might fail. And if the age has just finished, new cold folios
exposed by the aging are not reclaimed until the next reclaim iteration.

What's more, the current aging trigger is quite lenient, having 3 gens
with a reclaim priority lower than default will trigger aging, and blocks
reclaiming from one memcg. This wastes reclaim retry cycles easily. And
in the worst case, if the reclaim is making slower progress and all
following attempts fail due to being blocked by aging, it triggers
unexpected early OOM.

And if a lruvec requires aging, it doesn't mean it's hot. Instead, the
lruvec could be idle for quite a while, and hence it might contain lots of
cold folios to be reclaimed.

While it's helpful to rotate memcg LRU after aging for global reclaim, as
global reclaim fairness is coupled with the rotation in shrink_many, memcg
fairness is instead handled by cgroup iteration in shrink_node_memcgs.
So, for memcg level pressure, this abort is not the key part for keeping
the fairness. And in most cases, there is no need to age, and fairness
must be achieved by upper-level reclaim control.

So instead, just keep the scanning going unless one whole batch of folios
failed to be isolated or enough folios have been scanned, which is
triggered by evict_folios returning 0. And only abort for global reclaim
after one batch, so when there are fewer memcgs, progress is still made,
and the fairness mechanism described above still works fine.

And in most cases, the one more batch attempt for global reclaim might
just be enough to satisfy what the reclaimer needs, hence improving global
reclaim performance by reducing reclaim retry cycles.

Rotation is still there after the reclaim is done, which still follows the
comment in mmzone.h. And fairness still looking good.

16b475d2ac mm/mglru: avoid reclaim type fall back when isolation makes no progress
While isolation makes no progress in scan_folios(), we quickly fall back
to the other type in isolate_folios(). This is incorrect, as the current
type may still have sufficient folios. Falling back can undermine the
positive_ctrl_err() result from get_type_to_scan(), which is derived from
swappiness.

So just continue scanning this type for another round.

Worth noting if the cold generations are all reclaimed, scan will no
longer make any progress either, which may undermine the swappiness again.
This is not a new issue and hence better be fixed later [1].

3a72e078b4 mm/mglru: scan and count the exact number of folios
Make the scan helpers return the exact number of folios being scanned or
isolated. Since the reclaim loop now has a natural scan budget that
controls the scan progress, returning the scan number and consuming the
budget makes the scan more accurate and easier to follow.

The number of scanned folios for each iteration is always larger than 0,
unless the reclaim must stop for a forced aging, so there is no more need
for any special handling when there is no progress made:

- `return isolated || !remaining ?  scanned : 0` in scan_folios: both
the function and the call now just return the exact scan count, combined
with the scan budget introduced in the previous commit to avoid livelock
  or under scan.

- `scanned += try_to_inc_min_seq` in evict_folios: adding a bool as a
scan count was kind of confusing and no longer needed, as scan number
should never be zero as long as there are still evictable gens. We may
encounter a empty old gen that returns 0 scan count, to avoid that, do a
try_to_inc_min_seq before toisolation which have slight to none overhead
  in most cases.

- `evictable_min_seq + MIN_NR_GENS > max_seq` guard in evict_folios: the
  per-type get_nr_gens == MIN_NR_GENS check in scan_folios naturally
returns 0 when only two gens remain and breaks the loop.

Also change try_to_inc_min_seq to return void, as its return value is no
longer used by any caller. Call it before isolate_folios to flush any
empty gens left by external folio freeing, and again after isolate_folios
when scanning moved or protected folios may have emptied the oldest gen.

The scan still stops if only two gens are left, as the scan number will be
zero. This matches the previous behavior. This forced gen protection may
be removed or softened later to improve reclaim further.

163bc3d68c mm/mglru: restructure the reclaim loop
The current loop will calculate the scan number on each iteration. The
number of folios to scan is based on the LRU length, with some unclear
behaviors, e.g, the scan number is only shifted by reclaim priority when
aging is not needed or when at the default priority, and it couples the
number calculation with aging and rotation.

Adjust, simplify it, and decouple aging and rotation. Just calculate the
scan number for once at the beginning of the reclaim, always respect the
reclaim priority, and make the aging and rotation more explicit.

This slightly changes how aging and offline memcg reclaim works:
Previously, aging was skipped at DEF_PRIORITY even when eviction was no
longer possible, so the reclaimer wasted an iteration until the priority
escalated. Now aging runs immediately whenever it is needed to make
progress; the DEF_PRIORITY skip only applies when eviction is still
viable. This may avoid wasted iterations that over-reclaim slab and break
reclaim balance in multi-cgroup setups.

Similar for offline memcg. Previously, offline memcg wouldn't be aged
unless it didn't have any evictable folios. Now, we might age it if it
has only 3 generations, which should be fine. On one hand, offline memcg
might still hold long-term folios, and in fact, a long-existing offline
memcg must be pinned by some long-term folios like shmem. These folios
might be used by other memcg, so aging them as ordinary memcg seems
correct. Besides, aging enables further reclaim of an offlined memcg,
which will certainly happen if we keep shrinking it. And offline memcg
might soon be no longer an issue with reparenting.

Overall, the memcg LRU rotation, as described in mmzone.h, remains the
same.

Note that because the scan budget is now pinned at loop entry, tiny lruvec
might skip this reclaim pass, also skipping aging, which could be
beneficial as aging is not helpful since it will still be un-reclaimable
after aging. Reclaim will go on as usual once priority escalates.
