Android has mounted the v1 cpuset controller using filesystem type
"cpuset" (not "cgroup") since 2015 [1], and depends on the resulting
behavior where the controller name is not added as a prefix for cgroupfs
files. [2]
Later, a problem was discovered where cpu hotplug onlining did not
affect the cpuset/cpus files, which Android carried an out-of-tree patch
to address for a while. An attempt was made to upstream this patch, but
the recommendation was to use the "cpuset_v2_mode" mount option
instead. [3]
An effort was made to do so, but this fails with "cgroup: Unknown
parameter 'cpuset_v2_mode'" because commit e1cba4b85d ("cgroup: Add
mount flag to enable cpuset to use v2 behavior in v1 cgroup") did not
update the special cased cpuset_mount(), and only the cgroup (v1)
filesystem type was updated.
Add parameter parsing to the cpuset filesystem type so that
cpuset_v2_mode works like the cgroup filesystem type:
$ mkdir /dev/cpuset
$ mount -t cpuset -ocpuset_v2_mode none /dev/cpuset
$ mount|grep cpuset
none on /dev/cpuset type cgroup (rw,relatime,cpuset,noprefix,cpuset_v2_mode,release_agent=/sbin/cpuset_release_agent)

When adding folio_memcg function call in the zram module for
Android16-6.12, the following error occurs during compilation:
ERROR: modpost: "cgroup_mutex" [../soc-repo/zram.ko] undefined!
This error is caused by the indirect call to lockdep_is_held(&cgroup_mutex)
within folio_memcg. The export setting for cgroup_mutex is controlled by
the CONFIG_PROVE_RCU macro. If CONFIG_LOCKDEP is enabled while
CONFIG_PROVE_RCU is not, this compilation error will occur.
To resolve this issue, add a parallel macro CONFIG_LOCKDEP control to
ensure cgroup_mutex is properly exported when needed.

The current cpuset code uses both cpu_active_mask and cpu_online_mask
and it can be confusing which one should be used if we need to update
the code.
The top_cpuset is always synchronized to cpu_active_mask and we should
avoid using cpu_online_mask as much as possible. An active CPU is always
an online CPU, but not vice versa. cpu_active_mask and cpu_online_mask
can differ during hotplug operations.
A CPU is marked active at the last stage of CPU bringup (CPUHP_AP_ACTIVE).
It is also the stage where cpuset hotplug code will be called to update
the sched domains so that the scheduler can move a normal task to a
newly active CPU or remove tasks away from a newly inactivated CPU. The
online bit is set much earlier in the CPU bringup process and cleared
much later in CPU teardown.
If cpu_online_mask is used while a hotunplug operation is happening in
parallel, we may leave an offline CPU in cpu_allowed or have a higher
chance of leaving an offline CPU in some other masks. Avoid this
problem by always using cpu_active_mask in the cpuset code and leave
a comment as to why the use of cpu_online_mask is discouraged.

This large commit contains the initial support for TDX in KVM. All x86
parts enable the host-side hypercalls that KVM uses to talk to the TDX
module, a software component that runs in a special CPU mode called SEAM
(Secure Arbitration Mode).
The series is in turn split into multiple sub-series, each with a separate
merge commit:
- Initialization: basic setup for using the TDX module from KVM, plus
ioctls to create TDX VMs and vCPUs.
- MMU: in TDX, private and shared halves of the address space are mapped by
different EPT roots, and the private half is managed by the TDX module.
Using the support that was added to the generic MMU code in 6.14,
add support for TDX's secure page tables to the Intel side of KVM.
Generic KVM code takes care of maintaining a mirror of the secure page
tables so that they can be queried efficiently, and ensuring that changes
are applied to both the mirror and the secure EPT.
- vCPU enter/exit: implement the callbacks that handle the entry of a TDX
vCPU (via the SEAMCALL TDH.VP.ENTER) and the corresponding save/restore
of host state.
- Userspace exits: introduce support for guest TDVMCALLs that KVM forwards to
userspace. These correspond to the usual KVM_EXIT_* "heavyweight vmexits"
but are triggered through a different mechanism, similar to VMGEXIT for
SEV-ES and SEV-SNP.
- Interrupt handling: support for virtual interrupt injection as well as
handling VM-Exits that are caused by vectored events. Exclusive to
TDX are machine-check SMIs, which the kernel already knows how to
handle through the kernel machine check handler (commit 7911f145de,
"x86/mce: Implement recovery for errors in TDX/SEAM non-root mode")
- Loose ends: handling of the remaining exits from the TDX module, including
EPT violation/misconfig and several TDVMCALL leaves that are handled in
the kernel (CPUID, HLT, RDMSR/WRMSR, GetTdVmCallInfo); plus returning
an error or ignoring operations that are not supported by TDX guests

This non-functional change serves as preparation for moving to
subsystem-based rstat trees. To simplify future commits, change the
signatures of existing cgroup-based rstat functions to become css-based and
rename them to reflect that.
Though the signatures have changed, the implementations have not. Within
these functions use the css->cgroup pointer to obtain the associated cgroup
and allow code to function the same just as it did before this patch. At
applicable call sites, pass the subsystem-specific css pointer as an
argument or pass a pointer to cgroup::self if not in subsystem context.
Note that cgroup_rstat_updated_list() and cgroup_rstat_push_children()
are not altered yet since there would be a larger amount of css to
cgroup conversions which may overcomplicate the code at this
intermediate phase.

The cgroup struct has a css field called "self". The main difference
between this css and the others found in the cgroup::subsys array is that
cgroup::self has a NULL subsystem pointer. There are several places where
checks are performed to determine whether the css in question is
cgroup::self or not. Instead of accessing css->ss directly, introduce a
helper function that shows the intent and use where applicable.

This non-functional change serves as preparation for moving to
subsystem-based rstat trees. The base stats are not an actual subsystem,
but in future commits they will have exclusive rstat trees just as other
subsystems will.
Moving the base stat objects into a new struct allows the cgroup_rstat_cpu
struct to become more compact since it now only contains the minimum amount
of pointers needed for rstat participation. Subsystems will (in future
commits) make use of the compact cgroup_rstat_cpu struct while avoiding the
memory overhead of the base stat objects which they will not use.
An instance of the new struct cgroup_rstat_base_cpu was placed on the
cgroup struct so it can retain ownership of these base stats common to all
cgroups. A helper function was added for looking up the cpu-specific base
stats of a given cgroup. Finally, initialization and variable names were
adjusted where applicable.

There is a possible race between removing a cgroup diectory that is
a partition root and the creation of a new partition. The partition
to be removed can be dying but still online, it doesn't not currently
participate in checking for exclusive CPUs conflict, but the exclusive
CPUs are still there in subpartitions_cpus and isolated_cpus. These
two cpumasks are global states that affect the operation of cpuset
partitions. The exclusive CPUs in dying cpusets will only be removed
when cpuset_css_offline() function is called after an RCU delay.
As a result, it is possible that a new partition can be created with
exclusive CPUs that overlap with those of a dying one. When that dying
partition is finally offlined, it removes those overlapping exclusive
CPUs from subpartitions_cpus and maybe isolated_cpus resulting in an
incorrect CPU configuration.
This bug was found when a warning was triggered in
remote_partition_disable() during testing because the subpartitions_cpus
mask was empty.
One possible way to fix this is to iterate the dying cpusets as well and
avoid using the exclusive CPUs in those dying cpusets. However, this
can still cause random partition creation failures or other anomalies
due to racing. A better way to fix this race is to reset the partition
state at the moment when a cpuset is being killed.
Introduce a new css_killed() CSS function pointer and call it, if
defined, before setting CSS_DYING flag in kill_css(). Also update the
css_is_dying() helper to use the CSS_DYING flag introduced by commit
33c35aa481 ("cgroup: Prevent kill_css() from being called more than
once") for proper synchronization.
Add a new cpuset_css_killed() function to reset the partition state of
a valid partition root if it is being killed.

Currently, we don't allow the creation of a remote partition underneath
another local or remote partition. However, it is currently possible to
create a new local partition with an existing remote partition underneath
it if top_cpuset is the parent. However, the current cpuset code does
not set the effective exclusive CPUs correctly to account for those
that are taken by the remote partition.
Changing the code to properly account for those remote partition CPUs
under all possible circumstances can be complex. It is much easier to
not allow such a configuration which is not that useful. So forbid
that by making sure that exclusive_cpus mask doesn't overlap with
subpartitions_cpus and invalidate the partition if that happens.

Currently, changes in exclusive CPUs are being handled in
remote_partition_check() by disabling conflicting remote partitions.
However, that may lead to results unexpected by the users. Fix
this problem by removing remote_partition_check() and making
update_cpumasks_hier() handle changes in descendant remote partitions
properly.
The compute_effective_exclusive_cpumask() function is enhanced to check
the exclusive_cpus and effective_xcpus from siblings and excluded them
in its effective exclusive CPUs computation and return a value to show if
there is any sibling conflicts. This is somewhat like the cpu_exclusive
flag check in validate_change(). This is the initial step to enable us
to retire the use of cpu_exclusive flag in cgroup v2 in the future.
One of the tests in the TEST_MATRIX of the test_cpuset_prs.sh
script has to be updated due to changes in the way a child remote
partition root is being handled (updated instead of invalidation)
in update_cpumasks_hier().

Before commit f0af1bfc27 ("cgroup/cpuset: Relax constraints to
partition & cpus changes"), a cpuset partition cannot be enabled if not
all the requested CPUs can be granted from the parent cpuset. After
that commit, a cpuset partition can be created even if the requested
exclusive CPUs contain CPUs not allowed its parent. The delmask
containing exclusive CPUs to be removed from its parent wasn't
adjusted accordingly.
That is not a problem until the introduction of a new isolated_cpus
mask in commit 11e5f407b6 ("cgroup/cpuset: Keep track of CPUs in
isolated partitions") as the CPUs in the delmask may be added directly
into isolated_cpus.
As a result, isolated_cpus may incorrectly contain CPUs that are not
isolated leading to incorrect data reporting. Fix this by adjusting
the delmask to reflect the actual exclusive CPUs for the creation of
the partition.

Now that the rstat lock is being re-acquired on every CPU iteration in
cgroup_rstat_flush_locked(), having the initially acquire the lock is
unnecessary and unclear.
Inline cgroup_rstat_flush_locked() into cgroup_rstat_flush() and move
the lock/unlock calls to the beginning and ending of the loop body to
make the critical section obvious.
cgroup_rstat_flush_hold/release() do not make much sense with the lock
being dropped and reacquired internally. Since it has no external
callers, remove it and explicitly acquire the lock in
cgroup_base_stat_cputime_show() instead.
This leaves the code with a single flushing function,
cgroup_rstat_flush().

cgroup_rstat_flush_locked() grabs the irq safe cgroup_rstat_lock while
iterating all possible cpus. It only drops the lock if there is
scheduler or spin lock contention. If neither, then interrupts can be
disabled for a long time. On large machines this can disable interrupts
for a long enough time to drop network packets. On 400+ CPU machines
I've seen interrupt disabled for over 40 msec.
Prevent rstat from disabling interrupts while processing all possible
cpus. Instead drop and reacquire cgroup_rstat_lock for each cpu. This
approach was previously discussed in
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/ZBz%2FV5a7%2F6PZeM7S@slm.duckdns.org/,
though this was in the context of an non-irq rstat spin lock.
Benchmark this change with:
1) a single stat_reader process with 400 threads, each reading a test
memcg's memory.stat repeatedly for 10 seconds.
2) 400 memory hog processes running in the test memcg and repeatedly
charging memory until oom killed. Then they repeat charging and oom
killing.
v6.14-rc6 with CONFIG_IRQSOFF_TRACER with stat_reader and hogs, finds
interrupts are disabled by rstat for 45341 usec:

With this patch the CONFIG_IRQSOFF_TRACER doesn't find rstat to be the
longest holder. The longest irqs-off holder has irqs disabled for
4142 usec, a huge reduction from previous 45341 usec rstat finding.
Running stat_reader memory.stat reader for 10 seconds:

- with memory hogs: 9.46M accesses => 11.1M accesses
The throughput of memory.stat access improves.
The mode of memory.stat access latency after grouping by of 2 buckets:
- without memory hogs: 64 usec => 16 usec
- with memory hogs: 64 usec => 8 usec

Rebuilding of root domains accounting information (total_bw) is
currently broken on some cases, e.g. suspend/resume on aarch64. Problem
is that the way we keep track of domain changes and try to add bandwidth
back is convoluted and fragile.
Fix it by simplify things by making sure bandwidth accounting is cleared
and completely restored after root domains changes (after root domains
are again stable).
To be sure we always call dl_rebuild_rd_accounting while holding
cpuset_mutex we also add cpuset_reset_sched_domains() wrapper.

The current implementation has a bug: If the current css doesn't
contain any pool that is a descendant of the "pool" (i.e. when
found_descendant == false), then "pool" will point to some unrelated
pool. If the current css has a child, we'll overwrite parent_pool with
this unrelated pool on the next iteration.
Since we can just check whether a pool refers to the same region to
determine whether or not it's related, all the additional pool tracking
is unnecessary, so just switch to using css_for_each_descendant_pre for
traversal.

kernfs_rename_lock is used to obtain stable kernfs_node::{name|parent}
pointer. This is a preparation to access kernfs_node::parent under RCU
and ensure that the pointer remains stable under the RCU lifetime
guarantees.
For a complete path, as it is done in kernfs_path_from_node(), the
kernfs_rename_lock is still required in order to obtain a stable parent
relationship while computing the relevant node depth. This must not
change while the nodes are inspected in order to build the path.
If the kernfs user never moves the nodes (changes the parent) then the
kernfs_rename_lock is not required and the RCU guarantees are
sufficient. This "restriction" can be set with
KERNFS_ROOT_INVARIANT_PARENT. Otherwise the lock is required.
Rename kernfs_node::parent to kernfs_node::__parent to denote the RCU
access and use RCU accessor while accessing the node.
Make cgroup use KERNFS_ROOT_INVARIANT_PARENT since the parent here can
not change.

Tejun reported the following race between fork() and cgroup.kill at [1].
Tejun:
I was looking at cgroup.kill implementation and wondering whether there
could be a race window. So, __cgroup_kill() does the following:
k1. Set CGRP_KILL.
k2. Iterate tasks and deliver SIGKILL.
k3. Clear CGRP_KILL.
The copy_process() does the following:
c1. Copy a bunch of stuff.
c2. Grab siglock.
c3. Check fatal_signal_pending().
c4. Commit to forking.
c5. Release siglock.
c6. Call cgroup_post_fork() which puts the task on the css_set and tests
CGRP_KILL.
The intention seems to be that either a forking task gets SIGKILL and
terminates on c3 or it sees CGRP_KILL on c6 and kills the child. However, I
don't see what guarantees that k3 can't happen before c6. ie. After a
forking task passes c5, k2 can take place and then before the forking task
reaches c6, k3 can happen. Then, nobody would send SIGKILL to the child.
What am I missing?
This is indeed a race. One way to fix this race is by taking
cgroup_threadgroup_rwsem in write mode in __cgroup_kill() as the fork()
side takes cgroup_threadgroup_rwsem in read mode from cgroup_can_fork()
to cgroup_post_fork(). However that would be heavy handed as this adds
one more potential stall scenario for cgroup.kill which is usually
called under extreme situation like memory pressure.
To fix this race, let's maintain a sequence number per cgroup which gets
incremented on __cgroup_kill() call. On the fork() side, the
cgroup_can_fork() will cache the sequence number locally and recheck it
against the cgroup's sequence number at cgroup_post_fork() site. If the
sequence numbers mismatch, it means __cgroup_kill() can been called and
we should send SIGKILL to the newly created task.

During the dmem cgroup development, the parameters to the
dmem_cgroup_state_evict_valuable() and dmem_cgroup_try_charge() were
changed, but the documentation wasn't adjusted accordingly.
This results in a documentation build warning. Adjust the documentation
to reflect what the final functions parameters are.

This warning is caused by 'kernfs_break_active_protection' when it is
writing to cpuset.cpus, and the cgroup is removed concurrently.
The commit 3a5a6d0c2b ("cpuset: don't nest cgroup_mutex inside
get_online_cpus()") made cpuset_hotplug_workfn asynchronous, This change
involves calling flush_work(), which can create a multiple processes
circular locking dependency that involve cgroup_mutex, potentially leading
to a deadlock. To avoid deadlock. the commit 76bb5ab8f6 ("cpuset: break
kernfs active protection in cpuset_write_resmask()") added
'kernfs_break_active_protection' in the cpuset_write_resmask. This could
lead to this warning.
After the commit 2125c0034c ("cgroup/cpuset: Make cpuset hotplug
processing synchronous"), the cpuset_write_resmask no longer needs to
wait the hotplug to finish, which means that concurrent hotplug and cpuset
operations are no longer possible. Therefore, the deadlock doesn't exist
anymore and it does not have to 'break active protection' now. To fix this
warning, just remove kernfs_break_active_protection operation in the
'cpuset_write_resmask'.

This code is based on the RDMA and misc cgroup initially, but now
uses page_counter. It uses the same min/low/max semantics as the memory
cgroup as a result.
There's a small mismatch as TTM uses u64, and page_counter long pages.
In practice it's not a problem. 32-bits systems don't really come with
>=4GB cards and as long as we're consistently wrong with units, it's
fine. The device page size may not be in the same units as kernel page
size, and each region might also have a different page size (VRAM vs GART
for example).
The interface is simple:
- Call dmem_cgroup_register_region()
- Use dmem_cgroup_try_charge to check if you can allocate a chunk of memory,
use dmem_cgroup__uncharge when freeing it. This may return an error code,
or -EAGAIN when the cgroup limit is reached. In that case a reference
to the limiting pool is returned.
- The limiting cs can be used as compare function for
dmem_cgroup_state_evict_valuable.
- After having evicted enough, drop reference to limiting cs with
dmem_cgroup_pool_state_put.
This API allows you to limit device resources with cgroups.
You can see the supported cards in /sys/fs/cgroup/dmem.capacity
You need to echo +dmem to cgroup.subtree_control, and then you can
partition device memory.

Isolated CPUs are not allowed to be used in a non-isolated partition.
The only exception is the top cpuset which is allowed to contain boot
time isolated CPUs.
Commit ccac8e8de9 ("cgroup/cpuset: Fix remote root partition creation
problem") introduces a simplified scheme of including only partition
roots in sched domain generation. However, it does not properly account
for this exception case. This can result in leakage of isolated CPUs
into a sched domain.
Fix it by making sure that isolated CPUs are excluded from the top
cpuset before generating sched domains.
Also update the way the boot time isolated CPUs are handled in
test_cpuset_prs.sh to make sure that those isolated CPUs are really
isolated instead of just skipping them in the tests.

With some recent proposed changes [1] in the deadline server code,
it has caused a test failure in test_cpuset_prs.sh when a change
is being made to an isolated partition. This is due to failing
the cpuset_cpumask_can_shrink() check for SCHED_DEADLINE tasks at
validate_change().
This is actually a false positive as the failed test case involves an
isolated partition with load balancing disabled. The deadline check
is not meaningful in this case and the users should know what they
are doing.
Fix this by doing the cpuset_cpumask_can_shrink() check only when loading
balanced is enabled. Also change its arguments to use effective_cpus
for the current cpuset and user_xcpus() as an approiximation for the
target effective_cpus as the real effective_cpus hasn't been fully
computed yet as this early stage.
As the check isn't comprehensive, there may be false positives or
negatives. We may have to revise the code to do a more thorough check
in the future if this becomes a concern.

Currently the cpuset code uses group_subsys_on_dfl() to check if we
are running with cgroup v2. If CONFIG_CPUSETS_V1 isn't set, there is
really no need to do this check and we can optimize out some of the
unneeded v1 specific code paths. Introduce a new cpuset_v2() and use it
to replace the cgroup_subsys_on_dfl() check to further optimize the
code.

Since commit ff0ce721ec ("cgroup/cpuset: Eliminate unncessary
sched domains rebuilds in hotplug"), there is only one
rebuild_sched_domains_locked() call per hotplug operation. However,
writing to the various cpuset control files may still casue more than
one rebuild_sched_domains_locked() call to happen in some cases.
Juri had found that two rebuild_sched_domains_locked() calls in
update_prstate(), one from update_cpumasks_hier() and another one from
update_partition_sd_lb() could cause cpuset partition to be created
with null total_bw for DL tasks. IOW, DL tasks may not be scheduled
correctly in such a partition.
A sample command sequence that can reproduce null total_bw is as
follows.
# echo Y >/sys/kernel/debug/sched/verbose
# echo +cpuset >/sys/fs/cgroup/cgroup.subtree_control
# mkdir /sys/fs/cgroup/test
# echo 0-7 > /sys/fs/cgroup/test/cpuset.cpus
# echo 6-7 > /sys/fs/cgroup/test/cpuset.cpus.exclusive
# echo root >/sys/fs/cgroup/test/cpuset.cpus.partition
Fix this double rebuild_sched_domains_locked() calls problem
by replacing existing calls with cpuset_force_rebuild() except
the rebuild_sched_domains_cpuslocked() call at the end of
cpuset_handle_hotplug(). Checking of the force_sd_rebuild flag is
now done at the end of cpuset_write_resmask() and update_prstate()
to determine if rebuild_sched_domains_locked() should be called or not.
The cpuset v1 code can still call rebuild_sched_domains_locked()
directly as double rebuild_sched_domains_locked() calls is not possible.

Whether a cgroup is frozen is determined solely by whether it is set to
to be frozen and whether its parent is frozen. Currently, when is cgroup
is frozen or unfrozen, it iterates through the entire subtree to freeze
or unfreeze its descentdants. However, this is unesessary for a cgroup
that does not change its effective frozen status. This path aims to skip
the subtree if its parent does not have a change in effective freeze.
For an example, subtree like, a-b-c-d-e-f-g, when a is frozen, the
entire tree is frozen. If we freeze b and c again, it is unesessary to
iterate d, e, f and g. So does that If we unfreeze b/c.

cgroup.max.depth is the maximum allowed descent depth below the current
cgroup. If the actual descent depth is equal or larger, an attempt to
create a new child cgroup will fail. However due to the cgroup->max_depth
is of int type and having the default value INT_MAX, the condition
'level > cgroup->max_depth' will never be satisfied, and it will cause
an overflow of the level after it reaches to INT_MAX.
Fix it by starting the level from 0 and using '>=' instead.
It's worth mentioning that this issue is unlikely to occur in reality,
as it's impossible to have a depth of INT_MAX hierarchy, but should be
be avoided logically.

Cgroup-level CPU statistics currently include time spent on
user/system processes, but do not include niced CPU time (despite
already being tracked). This patch exposes niced CPU time to the
userspace, allowing users to get a better understanding of their
hardware limits and can facilitate more informed workload distribution.
A new field 'ntime' is added to struct cgroup_base_stat as opposed to
struct task_cputime to minimize footprint.

This is a followup to CONFIG-urability of cpuset and memory controllers

!CONFIG_CPUSETS_V1 is like !CONFIG_CPUSETS and

The configs that disable some v1 controllers would still allow mounting
them but with no controller-specific files. (Making such hierarchies
equivalent to named v1 hierarchies.) To achieve behavior consistent with
actual out-compilation of a whole controller, the mounts should treat
respective controllers as non-existent.
Wrap implementation into a helper function, leverage legacy_files to
detect compiled out controllers. The effect is that mounts on v1 would
fail and produce a message like:

Patch series "mm, memcg: cg2 memory{.swap,}.peak write handlers", v7.
This patch (of 2):
Other mechanisms for querying the peak memory usage of either a process or
v1 memory cgroup allow for resetting the high watermark. Restore parity
with those mechanisms, but with a less racy API.
For example:
- Any write to memory.max_usage_in_bytes in a cgroup v1 mount resets
the high watermark.
- writing "5" to the clear_refs pseudo-file in a processes's proc
directory resets the peak RSS.
This change is an evolution of a previous patch, which mostly copied the
cgroup v1 behavior, however, there were concerns about races/ownership
issues with a global reset, so instead this change makes the reset
filedescriptor-local.
Writing any non-empty string to the memory.peak and memory.swap.peak
pseudo-files reset the high watermark to the current usage for subsequent
reads through that same FD.
Notably, following Johannes's suggestion, this implementation moves the
O(FDs that have written) behavior onto the FD write(2) path. Instead, on
the page-allocation path, we simply add one additional watermark to
conditionally bump per-hierarchy level in the page-counter.
Additionally, this takes Longman's suggestion of nesting the
page-charging-path checks for the two watermarks to reduce the number of
common-case comparisons.
This behavior is particularly useful for work scheduling systems that need
to track memory usage of worker processes/cgroups per-work-item. Since
memory can't be squeezed like CPU can (the OOM-killer has opinions), these
systems need to track the peak memory usage to compute system/container
fullness when binpacking workitems.
Most notably, Vimeo's use-case involves a system that's doing global
binpacking across many Kubernetes pods/containers, and while we can use
PSI for some local decisions about overload, we strive to avoid packing
workloads too tightly in the first place. To facilitate this, we track
the peak memory usage. However, since we run with long-lived workers (to
amortize startup costs) we need a way to track the high watermark while a
work-item is executing. Polling runs the risk of missing short spikes
that last for timescales below the polling interval, and peak memory
tracking at the cgroup level is otherwise perfect for this use-case.
As this data is used to ensure that binpacked work ends up with sufficient
headroom, this use-case mostly avoids the inaccuracies surrounding
reclaimable memory.

With the "isolcpus" boot command line parameter, we are able to
create isolated CPUs at boot time. These isolated CPUs aren't fully
accounted for in the cpuset code. For instance, the root cgroup's
"cpuset.cpus.isolated" control file does not include the boot time
isolated CPUs. Fix that by looking for pre-isolated CPUs at init time.
The prstate_housekeeping_conflict() function does check the
HK_TYPE_DOMAIN housekeeping cpumask to make sure that CPUs outside of it
can only be used in isolated partition. Given the fact that we are going
to make housekeeping cpumasks dynamic, the current check may not be right
anymore. Save the boot time HK_TYPE_DOMAIN cpumask and check against

due to changes in a child partition's effective_xcpus, any child

For any changes of struct fd representation we need to
turn existing accesses to fields into calls of wrappers.
Accesses to struct fd::flags are very few (3 in linux/file.h,
1 in net/socket.c, 3 in fs/overlayfs/file.c and 3 more in
explicit initializers).
Those can be dealt with in the commit converting to
new layout; accesses to struct fd::file are too many for that.
This commit converts (almost) all of f.file to
fd_file(f). It's not entirely mechanical ('file' is used as
a member name more than just in struct fd) and it does not
even attempt to distinguish the uses in pointer context from
those in boolean context; the latter will be eventually turned
into a separate helper (fd_empty()).
NOTE: mass conversion to fd_empty(), tempting as it
might be, is a bad idea; better do that piecewise in commit
that convert from fdget...() to CLASS(...).

Cgroup subsystem state (CSS) is an abstraction in the cgroup layer to
help manage different structures in various cgroup subsystems by being
an embedded element inside a larger structure like cpuset or mem_cgroup.
The /proc/cgroups file shows the number of cgroups for each of the
subsystems. With cgroup v1, the number of CSSes is the same as the
number of cgroups. That is not the case anymore with cgroup v2. The
/proc/cgroups file cannot show the actual number of CSSes for the
subsystems that are bound to cgroup v2.
So if a v2 cgroup subsystem is leaking cgroups (usually memory cgroup),
we can't tell by looking at /proc/cgroups which cgroup subsystems may
be responsible.
As cgroup v2 had deprecated the use of /proc/cgroups, the hierarchical
cgroup.stat file is now being extended to show the number of live and
dying CSSes associated with all the non-inhibited cgroup subsystems that
have been bound to cgroup v2. The number includes CSSes in the current
cgroup as well as in all the descendants underneath it. This will help
us pinpoint which subsystems are responsible for the increasing number
of dying (nr_dying_descendants) cgroups.
The CSSes dying counts are stored in the cgroup structure itself
instead of inside the CSS as suggested by Johannes. This will allow
us to accurately track dying counts of cgroup subsystems that have
recently been disabled in a cgroup. It is now possible that a zero
subsystem number is coupled with a non-zero dying subsystem number.
The cgroup-v2.rst file is updated to discuss this new behavior.

When a process in D forks and fails due to B.max restriction, the

An UAF can happen when /proc/cpuset is read as reported in [1].
This can be reproduced by the following methods:
1.add an mdelay(1000) before acquiring the cgroup_lock In the
cgroup_path_ns function.
2.$cat /proc/<pid>/cpuset repeatly.
3.$mount -t cgroup -o cpuset cpuset /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/
$umount /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset/ repeatly.
The race that cause this bug can be shown as below:
(umount) | (cat /proc/<pid>/cpuset)
css_release | proc_cpuset_show
css_release_work_fn | css = task_get_css(tsk, cpuset_cgrp_id);
css_free_rwork_fn | cgroup_path_ns(css->cgroup, ...);
cgroup_destroy_root | mutex_lock(&cgroup_mutex);
rebind_subsystems |
cgroup_free_root |
| // cgrp was freed, UAF
| cgroup_path_ns_locked(cgrp,..);
When the cpuset is initialized, the root node top_cpuset.css.cgrp
will point to &cgrp_dfl_root.cgrp. In cgroup v1, the mount operation will
allocate cgroup_root, and top_cpuset.css.cgrp will point to the allocated
&cgroup_root.cgrp. When the umount operation is executed,
top_cpuset.css.cgrp will be rebound to &cgrp_dfl_root.cgrp.
The problem is that when rebinding to cgrp_dfl_root, there are cases
where the cgroup_root allocated by setting up the root for cgroup v1
is cached. This could lead to a Use-After-Free (UAF) if it is
subsequently freed. The descendant cgroups of cgroup v1 can only be
freed after the css is released. However, the css of the root will never
be released, yet the cgroup_root should be freed when it is unmounted.
This means that obtaining a reference to the css of the root does
not guarantee that css.cgrp->root will not be freed.
Fix this problem by using rcu_read_lock in proc_cpuset_show().
As cgroup_root is kfree_rcu after commit d23b5c5777
("cgroup: Make operations on the cgroup root_list RCU safe"),
css->cgroup won't be freed during the critical section.
To call cgroup_path_ns_locked, css_set_lock is needed, so it is safe to
replace task_get_css with task_css.

The "cpuset.cpus.exclusive.effective" value is currently limited to a
subset of its "cpuset.cpus". This makes the exclusive CPUs distribution
hierarchy subsumed within the larger "cpuset.cpus" hierarchy. We have to
decide on what CPUs are used locally and what CPUs can be passed down as
exclusive CPUs down the hierarchy and combine them into "cpuset.cpus".
The advantage of the current scheme is to have only one hierarchy to
worry about. However, it make it harder to use as all the "cpuset.cpus"
values have to be properly set along the way down to the designated remote
partition root. It also makes it more cumbersome to find out what CPUs
can be used locally.
Make creation of remote partition simpler by breaking the
dependency of "cpuset.cpus.exclusive" on "cpuset.cpus" and make
them independent entities. Now we have two separate hierarchies -
one for setting "cpuset.cpus.effective" and the other one for setting
"cpuset.cpus.exclusive.effective". We may not need to set "cpuset.cpus"
when we activate a partition root anymore.
Also update Documentation/admin-guide/cgroup-v2.rst and cpuset.c comment

The CS_CPU_EXCLUSIVE flag is currently set whenever cpuset.cpus.exclusive
is set to make sure that the exclusivity test will be run to ensure its
exclusiveness. At the same time, this flag can be changed whenever the
partition root state is changed. For example, the CS_CPU_EXCLUSIVE flag
will be reset whenever a partition root becomes invalid. This makes
using CS_CPU_EXCLUSIVE to ensure exclusiveness a bit fragile.
The current scheme also makes setting up a cpuset.cpus.exclusive
hierarchy to enable remote partition harder as cpuset.cpus.exclusive
cannot overlap with any cpuset.cpus of sibling cpusets if their
cpuset.cpus.exclusive aren't set.
Solve these issues by deferring the setting of CS_CPU_EXCLUSIVE flag
until the cpuset become a valid partition root while adding new checks
in validate_change() to ensure that cpuset.cpus.exclusive of sibling
cpusets cannot overlap.
An additional check is also added to validate_change() to make sure that
cpuset.cpus of one cpuset cannot be a subset of cpuset.cpus.exclusive
of a sibling cpuset to avoid the problem that none of those CPUs will
be available when these exclusive CPUs are extracted out to a newly
enabled partition root. The Documentation/admin-guide/cgroup-v2.rst
file is updated to document the new constraints.

Since commit 181c8e091a ("cgroup/cpuset: Introduce remote partition"),
a remote partition can be created underneath a non-partition root cpuset
as long as its exclusive_cpus are set to distribute exclusive CPUs down
to its children. The generate_sched_domains() function, however, doesn't
take into account this new behavior and hence will fail to create the
sched domain needed for a remote root (non-isolated) partition.
There are two issues related to remote partition support. First of
all, generate_sched_domains() has a fast path that is activated if
root_load_balance is true and top_cpuset.nr_subparts is non-zero. The
later condition isn't quite correct for remote partitions as nr_subparts
just shows the number of local child partitions underneath it. There
can be no local child partition under top_cpuset even if there are
remote partitions further down the hierarchy. Fix that by checking
for subpartitions_cpus which contains exclusive CPUs allocated to both
local and remote partitions.
Secondly, the valid partition check for subtree skipping in the csa[]
generation loop isn't enough as remote partition does not need to
have a partition root parent. Fix this problem by breaking csa[] array
generation loop of generate_sched_domains() into v1 and v2 specific parts
and checking a cpuset's exclusive_cpus before skipping its subtree in
the v2 case.
Also simplify generate_sched_domains() for cgroup v2 as only
non-isolating partition roots should be included in building the cpuset
array and none of the v1 scheduling attributes other than a different
way to create an isolated partition are supported.

In the cpuset_css_online(), clearing the CS_SCHED_LOAD_BALANCE bit
of cs->flags is guarded by callback_lock and cpuset_mutex. There is
no problem with itself, because it is consistent with the description
of there two global lock at the beginning of this file. However, since
the operation of checking, setting and clearing the flag bit is atomic,
protection of callback_lock is unnecessary here, see CS_SPREAD_*. so
to make it more consistent with the other code, move the operation
outside the critical section of callback_lock.

Currently, when pids.max limit is breached in the hierarchy, the event
is counted and reported in the cgroup where the forking task resides.
This decouples the limit and the notification caused by the limit making
it hard to detect when the actual limit was effected.
Redefine the pids.events:max as: the number of times the limit of the
cgroup was hit.
(Implementation differentiates also "forkfail" event but this is
currently not exposed as it would better fit into pids.stat. It also
differs from pids.events:max only when pids.max is configured on
non-leaf cgroups.)
Since it changes semantics of the original "max" event, introduce this
change only in the v2 API of the controller and add a cgroup2 mount
option to revert to the legacy behavior.

1 search siblings (hyperthreads in a core).
"2" enables levels 0 and 1, level_max excludes the last (level_max)

This closely resembles helpers added for the global cgroup_rstat_lock in
commit fc29e04ae1 ("cgroup/rstat: add cgroup_rstat_lock helpers and
tracepoints"). This is for the per CPU lock cgroup_rstat_cpu_lock.
Based on production workloads, we observe the fast-path "update" function
cgroup_rstat_updated() is invoked around 3 million times per sec, while the
"flush" function cgroup_rstat_flush_locked(), walking each possible CPU,
can see periodic spikes of 700 invocations/sec.
For this reason, the tracepoints are split into normal and fastpath
versions for this per-CPU lock. Making it feasible for production to
continuously monitor the non-fastpath tracepoint to detect lock contention
issues. The reason for monitoring is that lock disables IRQs which can
disturb e.g. softirq processing on the local CPUs involved. When the
global cgroup_rstat_lock stops disabling IRQs (e.g converted to a mutex),
this per CPU lock becomes the next bottleneck that can introduce latency
variations.
A practical bpftrace script for monitoring contention latency:
bpftrace -e '
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_cpu_lock_contended {
@start[tid]=nsecs; @cnt[probe]=count()}

results in load_balancing turned off by default in the top cpuset which
is bad for performance.
Fix this by using the BIT() helper macro to set the desired top_cpuset

This commit enhances the ability to troubleshoot the global
cgroup_rstat_lock by introducing wrapper helper functions for the lock
along with associated tracepoints.
Although global, the cgroup_rstat_lock helper APIs and tracepoints take
arguments such as cgroup pointer and cpu_in_loop variable. This
adjustment is made because flushing occurs per cgroup despite the lock
being global. Hence, when troubleshooting, it's important to identify the
relevant cgroup. The cpu_in_loop variable is necessary because the global
lock may be released within the main flushing loop that traverses CPUs.
In the tracepoints, the cpu_in_loop value is set to -1 when acquiring the
main lock; otherwise, it denotes the CPU number processed last.
The new feature in this patchset is detecting when lock is contended. The
tracepoints are implemented with production in mind. For minimum overhead
attach to cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended, which only gets activated
when trylock detects lock is contended. A quick production check for
issues could be done via this perf commands:
perf record -g -e cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended
Next natural question would be asking how long time do lock contenders
wait for obtaining the lock. This can be answered by measuring the time
between cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended and cgroup:cgroup_rstat_locked
when args->contended is set. Like this bpftrace script:
bpftrace -e '
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended {@start[tid]=nsecs}
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_locked {
if (args->contended) {
@wait_ns=hist(nsecs-@start[tid]); delete(@start[tid]);}}
interval:s:1 {time("%H:%M:%S "); print(@wait_ns); }'
Extending with time spend holding the lock will be more expensive as this
also looks at all the non-contended cases.
Like this bpftrace script:
bpftrace -e '
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended {@start[tid]=nsecs}
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_locked { @locked[tid]=nsecs;
if (args->contended) {
@wait_ns=hist(nsecs-@start[tid]); delete(@start[tid]);}}
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_unlock {
@locked_ns=hist(nsecs-@locked[tid]); delete(@locked[tid]);}
interval:s:1 {time("%H:%M:%S "); print(@wait_ns);print(@locked_ns); }'

Since commit 3a5a6d0c2b03("cpuset: don't nest cgroup_mutex inside
get_online_cpus()"), cpuset hotplug was done asynchronously via a work
function. This is to avoid recursive locking of cgroup_mutex.
Since then, the cgroup locking scheme has changed quite a bit. A
cpuset_mutex was introduced to protect cpuset specific operations.
The cpuset_mutex is then replaced by a cpuset_rwsem. With commit
d74b27d63a ("cgroup/cpuset: Change cpuset_rwsem and hotplug lock
order"), cpu_hotplug_lock is acquired before cpuset_rwsem. Later on,
cpuset_rwsem is reverted back to cpuset_mutex. All these locking changes
allow the hotplug code to call into cpuset core directly.
The following commits were also merged due to the asynchronous nature
of cpuset hotplug processing.
- commit b22afcdf04 ("cpu/hotplug: Cure the cpusets trainwreck")
- commit 50e7663233 ("sched/cpuset/pm: Fix cpuset vs. suspend-resume
bugs")
- commit 28b89b9e6f ("cpuset: handle race between CPU hotplug and
cpuset_hotplug_work")
Clean up all these bandages by making cpuset hotplug
processing synchronous again with the exception that the call to
cgroup_transfer_tasks() to transfer tasks out of an empty cgroup v1
cpuset, if necessary, will still be done via a work function due to the
existing cgroup_mutex -> cpu_hotplug_lock dependency. It is possible
to reverse that dependency, but that will require updating a number of
different cgroup controllers. This special hotplug code path should be
rarely taken anyway.
As all the cpuset states will be updated by the end of the hotplug
operation, we can revert most the above commits except commit
50e7663233 ("sched/cpuset/pm: Fix cpuset vs. suspend-resume bugs")
which is partially reverted. Also removing some cpus_read_lock trylock
attempts in the cpuset partition code as they are no longer necessary
since the cpu_hotplug_lock is now held for the whole duration of the
cpuset hotplug code path.

Core & protocols
----------------
- Large effort by Eric to lower rtnl_lock pressure and remove locks:
- Make commonly used parts of rtnetlink (address, route dumps etc.)
lockless, protected by RCU instead of rtnl_lock.
- Add a netns exit callback which already holds rtnl_lock,
allowing netns exit to take rtnl_lock once in the core
instead of once for each driver / callback.
- Remove locks / serialization in the socket diag interface.
- Remove 6 calls to synchronize_rcu() while holding rtnl_lock.
- Remove the dev_base_lock, depend on RCU where necessary.
- Support busy polling on a per-epoll context basis. Poll length
and budget parameters can be set independently of system defaults.
- Introduce struct net_hotdata, to make sure read-mostly global config
variables fit in as few cache lines as possible.
- Add optional per-nexthop statistics to ease monitoring / debug
of ECMP imbalance problems.
- Support TCP_NOTSENT_LOWAT in MPTCP.
- Ensure that IPv6 temporary addresses' preferred lifetimes are long
enough, compared to other configured lifetimes, and at least 2 sec.
- Support forwarding of ICMP Error messages in IPSec, per RFC 4301.
- Add support for the independent control state machine for bonding
per IEEE 802.1AX-2008 5.4.15 in addition to the existing coupled
control state machine.
- Add "network ID" to MCTP socket APIs to support hosts with multiple
disjoint MCTP networks.
- Re-use the mono_delivery_time skbuff bit for packets which user
space wants to be sent at a specified time. Maintain the timing
information while traversing veth links, bridge etc.
- Take advantage of MSG_SPLICE_PAGES for RxRPC DATA and ACK packets.
- Simplify many places iterating over netdevs by using an xarray
instead of a hash table walk (hash table remains in place, for
use on fastpaths).
- Speed up scanning for expired routes by keeping a dedicated list.
- Speed up "generic" XDP by trying harder to avoid large allocations.
- Support attaching arbitrary metadata to netconsole messages.
Things we sprinkled into general kernel code
--------------------------------------------
- Enforce VM_IOREMAP flag and range in ioremap_page_range and introduce
VM_SPARSE kind and vm_area_[un]map_pages (used by bpf_arena).
- Rework selftest harness to enable the use of the full range of
ksft exit code (pass, fail, skip, xfail, xpass).
Netfilter
---------
- Allow userspace to define a table that is exclusively owned by a daemon
(via netlink socket aliveness) without auto-removing this table when
the userspace program exits. Such table gets marked as orphaned and
a restarting management daemon can re-attach/regain ownership.
- Speed up element insertions to nftables' concatenated-ranges set type.
Compact a few related data structures.
BPF
---
- Add BPF token support for delegating a subset of BPF subsystem
functionality from privileged system-wide daemons such as systemd
through special mount options for userns-bound BPF fs to a trusted
& unprivileged application.
- Introduce bpf_arena which is sparse shared memory region between BPF
program and user space where structures inside the arena can have
pointers to other areas of the arena, and pointers work seamlessly
for both user-space programs and BPF programs.
- Introduce may_goto instruction that is a contract between the verifier
and the program. The verifier allows the program to loop assuming it's
behaving well, but reserves the right to terminate it.
- Extend the BPF verifier to enable static subprog calls in spin lock
critical sections.
- Support registration of struct_ops types from modules which helps
projects like fuse-bpf that seeks to implement a new struct_ops type.
- Add support for retrieval of cookies for perf/kprobe multi links.
- Support arbitrary TCP SYN cookie generation / validation in the TC
layer with BPF to allow creating SYN flood handling in BPF firewalls.
- Add code generation to inline the bpf_kptr_xchg() helper which
improves performance when stashing/popping the allocated BPF objects.
Wireless
--------
- Add SPP (signaling and payload protected) AMSDU support.
- Support wider bandwidth OFDMA, as required for EHT operation.
Driver API
----------
- Major overhaul of the Energy Efficient Ethernet internals to support
new link modes (2.5GE, 5GE), share more code between drivers
(especially those using phylib), and encourage more uniform behavior.
Convert and clean up drivers.
- Define an API for querying per netdev queue statistics from drivers.
- IPSec: account in global stats for fully offloaded sessions.
- Create a concept of Ethernet PHY Packages at the Device Tree level,
to allow parameterizing the existing PHY package code.
- Enable Rx hashing (RSS) on GTP protocol fields.
Misc
----
- Improvements and refactoring all over networking selftests.
- Create uniform module aliases for TC classifiers, actions,
and packet schedulers to simplify creating modprobe policies.
- Address all missing MODULE_DESCRIPTION() warnings in networking.
- Extend the Netlink descriptions in YAML to cover message encapsulation
or "Netlink polymorphism", where interpretation of nested attributes
depends on link type, classifier type or some other "class type".

The update_cpumask(), checks for newly requested cpumask by calling
validate_change(), which returns an error on passing an invalid set
of cpu(s). Independent of the error returned, update_cpumask() always
returns zero, suppressing the error and returning success to the user
on writing an invalid cpu range for a cpuset. Fix it by returning
retval instead, which is returned by validate_change().

We've removed the SLAB allocator, cpuset_do_slab_mem_spread() and
SLAB_MEM_SPREAD, memory_spread_slab is a no-op now. We can mark
memory_spread_slab as obsolete in case someone still wants to use it after
cpuset_do_slab_mem_spread() removed. For more details, please check [1].

Fix a possible memory leak in update_exclusive_cpumask() by moving the
alloc_cpumasks() down after the validate_change() check which can fail
and still before the temporary cpumasks are needed.

This commit marks kfuncs as such inside the .BTF_ids section. The upshot
of these annotations is that we'll be able to automatically generate
kfunc prototypes for downstream users. The process is as follows:
1. In source, use BTF_KFUNCS_START/END macro pair to mark kfuncs
2. During build, pahole injects into BTF a "bpf_kfunc" BTF_DECL_TAG for
each function inside BTF_KFUNCS sets
3. At runtime, vmlinux or module BTF is made available in sysfs
4. At runtime, bpftool (or similar) can look at provided BTF and
generate appropriate prototypes for functions with "bpf_kfunc" tag
To ensure future kfunc are similarly tagged, we now also return error
inside kfunc registration for untagged kfuncs. For vmlinux kfuncs,
we also WARN(), as initcall machinery does not handle errors.

Here are the set of driver core and kernfs changes for 6.8-rc1. Nothing
major in here this release cycle, just lots of small cleanups and some
tweaks on kernfs that in the very end, got reverted and will come back
in a safer way next release cycle.
Included in here are:
- more driver core 'const' cleanups and fixes
- fw_devlink=rpm is now the default behavior
- kernfs tiny changes to remove some string functions
- cpu handling in the driver core is updated to work better on many
systems that add topologies and cpus after booting
- other minor changes and cleanups
All of the cpu handling patches have been acked by the respective
maintainers and are coming in here in one series. Everything has been
in linux-next for a while with no reported issues.
