objtool/klp: Allow new references to module exports
klp_reloc_needed() returns true for module exports to support late-module patching. However, clone_reloc_klp() unconditionally rejects symbols without a twin (i.e., new references added by the patch), even when the symbol is a known export from Module.symvers. Relax the check: allow new references to exported symbols by only erroring on !twin when there is no export. The export metadata from Module.symvers provides sufficient context to emit the klp-relocation without a twin. For a module export that isn't sufficient on its own though, as the resulting klp relocation will only be resolved at patch-enable time if the exporting module is loaded. If the original (unpatched) module already depends on the exporting module, the dependency is safe: the module loader ensures the dependency is satisfied before the patched module can be loaded, so the klp relocation target will exist. However, if the patch introduces a reference to a module that the original doesn't depend on, there is no such guarantee. The exporting module could be absent or could be unloaded at any time, leading to a relocation failure or use-after-free. So also add a build-time check: when a new symbol reference (no twin) targets a module export, verify that the original module already has at least one UNDEF symbol resolving to that same exporting module. If not, error out with a diagnostic message. objtool/klp: Don't match local symbols against exports
While cloning a reloc, klp diff calls find_export() to determine whether
the referenced symbol is exported. That decides whether the reference
needs a klp reloc, which object the klp symbol belongs to, and whether
the symbol's data needs to be copied into the patch module.
But find_export() matches purely on symbol name, so a static function or
variable which happens to share its name with an export is mistaken for
a reference to that export:
- klp_reloc_needed() creates a klp reloc pointing at the exporting
module's symbol rather than the local one. For a vmlinux export it
skips the klp reloc altogether, leaving a normal reloc which the
module loader resolves to the vmlinux symbol.
- clone_reloc() treats the symbol as external and clones it without
its data, leaving a dangling reference.
- validate_special_section_klp_reloc() attributes a static branch or
call key to the wrong module, and for a vmlinux export skips the
unsupported-key check entirely.
Exports are always global, so ignore local symbols in find_export().

objtool/klp: Fix cross-module klp relocation section naming
A klp relocation section is .klp.rela.<objname>.<secname>, where objname
is the object being patched.
klp-build wrongly derives objname from where the referenced symbol
lives, not where it's referenced. For a cross-module reference like
patched can_isotp code calling can.ko's can_rx_unregister(), that gives
.klp.rela.can..text rather than .klp.rela.can_isotp..text. Unless the
patch happens to patch can.ko as well, the relocation never gets applied
and the call goes off into the weeds.
Name the intermediate section __klp_relocs.<objname> so post-link can
read the patched object's name from there.

objtool/klp: Explicitly disallow patching or referencing init code/data
Explicitly disallow the patching and referencing of init code/data. Otherwise it could potentially introduce some odd edge cases depending on whether the target object's init section has been freed yet (note that the init code still exists in the target module when doing late module patching). Such edge cases include sympos calculation and the patching and/or referencing of non-existent (init-freed) code/data. Not to mention the inherent differences in behavior that occur when the init code is only patched *some* of the time depending on module loading order or kernel config. objtool/klp: Ignore replacement offset of empty x86 alternatives
An x86 alternative with an empty replacement, e.g. the second entry of
ALTERNATIVE_2("orig", "repl", ft1, "", ft2)
has a replacementlen of zero. Its replacement offset still gets a
relocation, but the label it points at is the end of the previous
replacement, which is also the beginning of the *next* alternative's
replacement. The value is meaningless; get_alt_entry() already ignores
it for that reason.
klp diff doesn't ignore it. When such an alternative belongs to a
changed function, cloning its relocations drags in the unrelated
neighboring replacement, along with everything that replacement
references. On an x86 clang/lto build an empty alternative in
meminfo_proc_show() pulled in the replacement of an alternative in
proc_kcore_init(), silently emitting a klp relocation against init text
which has long since been freed by the time the patch is applied.
Add arch_alt_ignore_new_reloc() and skip such relocations when cloning.
This has to be arch specific: on arm64 a zero-length replacement instead
identifies an alternative callback, whose replacement offset points at
the callback function and must be preserved.

objtool/klp: Fix size of empty special section entries
create_fake_symbols() sizes each ANNOTATE_DATA_SPECIAL entry from the
offset of the next annotation, falling back to the end of the section
for the last entry. But the last entry is detected by a zero size,
which also happens for an *empty* entry: ALTERNATIVE(oldinstr, "", ft)
still annotates its zero-length replacement, at the same offset as the
next entry's annotation.
So every empty replacement gets a fake symbol spanning the entire rest
of .altinstr_replacement. That's harmless today only because
find_symbol_containing() picks the smaller of two overlapping symbols.
Track whether a next annotation was found rather than inferring it from
the size. A zero-length fake symbol is fine: find_symbol_containing()
skips those, so the properly sized symbol at the same offset still wins.

objtool/klp: Fix vmlinux .klp.symid link error for .no_trim_symbol symbols
Testing klp-build with arm64 produced the following linker error during
the original kernel build:
`__notrim.1' referenced in section `.klp.symid' of vmlinux.o: defined in discarded section `.no_trim_symbol' of vmlinux.o
symbol_get() puts a static __notrim[] in .no_trim_symbol, which GCC
names __notrim.1, __notrim.2, etc. Two or more built-in translation
units calling symbol_get() thus produce duplicate names, resulting in
corresponding .klp.symid references which trigger the above error.
Add .no_trim_symbol to the discarded section list so its symbols don't
get symids.
Note this issue is not specific to arm64: it just needs two built-in
symbol_get() callers. arm64 trips over it easily because it has KVM
always compiled in vmlinux, whereas on x86 it's typically a module.

objtool/klp: Fix symbol resolution for duplicate data symbols
find_sympos() calculates a sympos used by livepatch to disambiguate
duplicately-named symbols. For function symbols, there's a hack which
counts .text.unlikely symbols before other .text symbols, matching the
linker script's section ordering.
Not only is the hack fragile, data symbols can have the same problem.
So for example, adding a reference to pwq_cache in
ep_unregister_pollwait() can trigger a corrupt sympos and a relocation
to the wrong pwq_cache symbol in the livepatch module, resulting in a
crash or undefined behavior.
Remove the existing hack in favor of a fully deterministic solution,
using the new .klp.symid table to derive the symbol-to-id mapping from
the original vmlinux.o and the id-to-address mapping from the
corresponding vmlinux, which can then be used to determine the exact
sympos associated with the original vmlinux.
Modules don't need any special treatment: the .ko has the same
section/symbol ordering as the original whole-archive symbol table.

objtool/klp: Add .klp.symid for sympos disambiguation
Livepatch identifies a duplicate-named symbol by its position (sympos) among same-named kallsyms entries, which for vmlinux are counted in ascending address order in the final linked kernel. That order can't be reliably derived from vmlinux.o: the final link reorders sub-sections (.text.unlikely*, .data..*, etc). Bridge the gap with a new .klp.symid section which can be used to correlate symbols between vmlinux.o and vmlinux so that klp-diff can reliably determine the sympos. The table can't survive --gc-sections: keeping it alive would keep every duplicate-named symbol's section alive, so the reference kernel would stop matching the one which ships. klp-build rejects CONFIG_LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION instead. Nothing is lost today: x86_64 is the only HAVE_KLP_BUILD arch and doesn't select HAVE_LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION, arm64 and s390 have never selected it either, and on powerpc, it's still EXPERIMENTAL and disabled by every distro kernel. This is the build-time half of reliable vmlinux sympos computation; "objtool klp diff" will consume the table in a subsequent commit. objtool/klp: Fix false module dependencies caused by dead relocs
When creating a klp reloc, klp-diff keeps the original relocation but
converts the referenced symbol to an UNDEF/WEAK placeholder tombstone
symbol, which gets fully disabled later by klp post-link. The tombstone
symbol is only needed to avoid confusing objtool when it does the final
run on the patch module.
However, for references to exported symbols, modpost sees the reference
to the tombstone symbol as a real reference to an exported symbol,
resulting in a false module dependency getting created.
Further, for a reference to a tombstone symbol which is exported into a
module namespace, e.g. via EXPORT_SYMBOL_FOR_KVM_INTERNAL(), modpost
can't satisfy the dependency, resulting in a warning like the following:
module ... uses symbol kvm_flush_remote_tlbs from namespace
module:kvm-amd,kvm-intel, but does not import it.
Rename the placeholder tombstone symbols to ".klp.tombstone.<name>" so
modpost no longer recognizes them.

objtool/klp: Normalize Module.symvers paths to module names
Module.symvers contains build-tree object paths as module identifiers
(e.g., "arch/x86/kvm/kvm") rather than runtime module names ("kvm").
Objtool's clone_reloc_klp() uses this field directly for exported
symbols, while unexported symbols correctly go through __find_modname().
This means that exported symbol relocations may land in a .klp.rela
section named with the build path rather than the module name. That is
a crash waiting to happen: the kernel's livepatch loader silently skips
this relocation because it doesn't match the expected klp_object name.
The unresolved relocation sits in the newly activated code, crashing
when executed.
Normalize export->mod at Module.symvers read time using the same logic
as __find_modname() (refactored into a shared normalize_modname()
helper).

objtool/klp: Fix module name normalization for paths with dots
When .modinfo has no "name=" tag, __find_modname() falls back to
converting the object's build-tree path to a runtime module name by
stripping directory components, converting '-' to '_' and truncating the
file extension.
It does all that in a single pass over the entire path, so the first dot
anywhere in the path ends the name. For an object built in a directory
whose name contains a dot, e.g. "drivers/foo-1.0/bar.o", the result is a
bogus module name.
Strip the directory components up front so only the basename is scanned
for the extension separator.

selftests/mm: fix potential wild pointer access of getline due to missing init
This is another occurrence of using getline where the code assumes that
getline allocates memory to store the line, but the pointer passed to it
is uninitialized and potentially a non-null pointer. This violates the
Open Group Spec[1] and caused a segfault in a similar situation in
selftest/clone3/clone3_set_tid. Fix it by initializing the line pointer
to NULL.
The issue has been found by simply grepping through the selftest code
after running into the issue in clone3_set_tid. Whether it segfaults in
its current state is unknown to me. But it's good to be addressed due to
defensive reasons.

selftests/clone3: fix wild pointer access of getline due to missing init
Patch series "selftests: Add missing initalization of pointer passed to
getline", v2.
This patch (of 2):
Clone3_set_tid uses getline(&line, ...) in a loop to read the child's
process status. The code expects that getline allocates the buffer for
the line on the first loop iteration. According to the Open Group
Spec[1], char *line has to be null pointer for this:

However, char *line is only declared, leading to an undefined value that
is potentially non-null. In an example run with Musl v1.2.6, the realloc
call[2] of getdelim, which implements getline, triggers a segfault:

Looking at the realloc implementation, Musl mallocs for a null pointer
memory. But for a non-null pointer, it assumes it's passed a valid
pointer to the heap and tries to access its meta-data. This leads to the
segfault we see:

Pull vfs fixes from Christian Brauner:
- vfs: Preserve the ACL_DONT_CACHE state in forget_cached_acl().
ACL_DONT_CACHE is meant to be a permanent opt-out from ACL caching
which FUSE relies on for servers that don't negotiate FUSE_POSIX_ACL.
The helper replaced it with ACL_NOT_CACHED, silently re-enabling the
cache, and as fuse doesn't invalidate the cache for such servers a
properly timed get_acl() returned stale ACLs. Comes with a fuse
selftest reproducing this.
- pidfs:
- Preserve PIDFD_THREAD when a thread pidfd is reopened via
open_by_handle_at(). PIDFD_THREAD shares the O_EXCL bit which
do_dentry_open() strips after the flags have been validated, so
the reopened pidfd silently became a process pidfd. Comes with a
selftest.
- Add a pidfs_dentry_open() helper so the regular pidfd allocation
path and the file handle path share the code that forces O_RDWR
and reapplies the pidfd flags that do_dentry_open() strips.
- Handle FS_IOC32_GETVERSION in the compat ioctl path.
- Make pidfs_ino_lock static.
- iomap:
- Fix the block range calculation in ifs_clear_range_dirty() so a
partial clear doesn't drop the dirty state of blocks the range
only partially covers.
- Support invalidating partial folios so a partial truncate or hole
punch with blocksize < foliosize doesn't leave stale dirty bits
behind.
- Only set did_zero when iomap_zero_iter() actually zeroed
something.
- Guard ifs_set_range_dirty() and ifs_set_range_uptodate() against
zero-length ranges where the unsigned last-block calculation
underflows and bitmap_set() writes far beyond the ifs->state
allocation.
- Don't merge ioends with different io_private values as the merge
could leak or corrupt the private data of the individual ioends.
- exec:
- Raise bprm->have_execfd only once the binfmt_misc interpreter has
actually been opened. The flag was set as soon as a matching 'O'
or 'C' entry was found. If the interpreter open failed with
ENOEXEC the exec fell through to the next binary format with
have_execfd raised but no executable staged and begin_new_exec()
NULL derefed past the point of no return.
- Fix an unsigned loop counter wrap in transfer_args_to_stack() on
nommu. An overlong argument or environment string pushes bprm->p
below PAGE_SIZE, the stop index becomes zero, and the loop never
terminates, wrapping its counter and copying garbage from in
front of the page array into the new process stack.
- Make binfmt_elf_fdpic only honour the first PT_INTERP like
binfmt_elf does. Each additional PT_INTERP overwrote the previous
interpreter, leaking the name allocation and the interpreter file
reference together with the write denial open_exec() took,
leaving the file unwritable for as long as the system runs.
- overlayfs:
- Compare the full escaped xattr prefix including the trailing dot.
An xattr like "trusted.overlay.overlayfoo" was misclassified as
an escaped overlay xattr.
- Check read access to the copy_file_range() source with the
source's mounter credentials.
- super: Thawing a filesystem whose block device was frozen with
bdev_freeze() deadlocked. Dropping the last block layer freeze
reference from under s_umount ends up in fs_bdev_thaw() which
reacquires s_umount on the same task. Pin the superblock with an
active reference instead and call bdev_thaw() without holding
s_umount.
- procfs: Return EACCES instead of success when the ptrace access check
for namespace links fails.
- afs: Use afs_dir_get_block() rather than afs_dir_find_block() for
block 0 in afs_edit_dir_remove(), matching afs_edit_dir_add().
- Push the memcg gating of ->nr_cached_objects() down into the btrfs
and shmem callbacks instead of skipping every callback during
non-root memcg reclaim. The blanket check short-circuited XFS whose
inode reclaim hook is intentionally driven from per-memcg contexts to
free memcg-charged slab.
- eventpoll: Pin files while checking reverse paths.
Since struct file became SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU a concurrent close
could free and recycle the file under the check which then took and
dropped the f_lock of whatever live file now occupies that slot.

tracing fix for 7.2:
- Move rb_desc->nr_page_va before updating dynamic array The rb_descr->page_va is a dynamic array counted by nr_page_va. But the updating of the page_va[] is done before the nr_page_va is incremented causing a build with CONFIG_UBSAN_BOUNDS to flag it as an overflow. Move the increment of the counted by value before the array element is updated. - Propagate errors from remote event bulk updates The return value of trace_remote_enable_event() was not being checked by remote_events_dir_enable_write() where it would silently fail. Have it check the return value and propagate that back up to user space. - Fix resource leak on mmiotrace trace_pipe close The mmiotrace tracer was created in 2008 before the trace_pipe had a close callback to allow tracers to do clean up from trace_pipe open. The trace_pipe close cleanup callback was added in 2009 but the mmiotrace tracer was not updated. It had a hack to do the cleanup in the read call, where it may leak if user space did not read the entire buffer. Add a callback to mmiotrace trace_pipe close do to the cleanup properly. - Fix a possible NULL pointer dereference in the mmiotrace tracer If the mmio_pipe_open() fails to find a PCI device, it will set the hiter->dev pointer to NULL. The read function will blindly dereference that pointer. Fix the read call to check to see if that pointer is populated before dereferencing it. - Fix union collision of module and refcnt for dynamic events In 'struct trace_event_call', the 'module' pointer and the 'refcnt' atomic variable share the same memory space in a union. The filter on module logic only checked if the 'module' was set to determine if the event belonged to the module. As dynamic events are always builtin, it doesn't need the 'module' field of the structure and used a refcount. But the module filtering logic would then mistaken these dynamic events as a module and call module_name(event->module) on it. Add a check to see if the event is a dynamic event and if so, do not check it for being part of the given module. - Reset the top level buffer in selftests before running instances The ftracetest selftest initializes each instance before executing the tests. But it does not reset the top level buffer. Dynamic events are only added and removed by the top level so any left over dynamic events will not be removed by the reset in the instances. Left over dynamic events can cause the tests to incorrectly fail. Reset the top level buffer before running the instances. - Make the context_switch counter 64 bit The code to read user space for a system call trace event or for a trace_marker will disable migration, enable preemption, read user space into a per CPU buffer, disable preemption and enable migration again. It checks if the per CPU context switch counter to see if it changed, and if it did not, it would know that the per CPU buffer was not touched by another task. But the save counter was 32 bit and it would compare it to the 64 bit context_switch variable. A long running system could have the context_switch variable greater that 1<<32 in which case the compare will always fail. The compare will promote the 32 bit int saved value to 64 bit and compare it to the full 64 bit counter. Since the top 32 bits of the saved value was zero, it would never match. - Fix a use-after-free of the event_enable trigger The event_enable trigger allows for enabling one event when another event is triggered. When the trigger is removed, it must go through a synchronization phase to make sure it is not triggered again. The trigger itself is delayed by the "bulk delay" logic that was recently added. But the code that frees the event_enable data used to rely on the trigger code to do the synchronization. Now that the code uses the call RCU functions (and a workqueue), that delay no longer is there. Add a callback private_data_free() function that allows triggers to clean up data after the synchronization phase has completed. - Move the module_ref counter into the delay callback Since an event of the event_enable trigger can enable an event for a module, it ups the module ref count for that event's module. This prevents the event from trying to enable an event that no longer exists and cause a use-after-free bug. Rust fixes for v7.2 (2nd)
Toolchain and infrastructure:
- 'zerocopy' crates: update to v0.8.54 to fix a modpost error under
'CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=y'.
There are actually two updates in the PR: the one to v0.8.52 is
fairly large and was originally not intended for a fixes PR, but the
actual fix landed in the v0.8.54 one. Thus I included both here.
The v0.8.52 update includes two things upstream added for us:
'--cfg no_fp_fmt_parse' to avoid a local workaround, and the new
'most_traits' feature.
The good news is that, after these updates, the delta with upstream
is now trivial: only an identifier prefix change and the SPDX
parentheses.
- Fix an objtool warning by adding one more 'noreturn' function for
Rust 1.99.0 (expected 2026-10-01).
- Clean up new 'semicolon_in_expressions_from_macros' lint errors for
Rust 1.99.0 (expected 2026-10-01). The lint can be allowed, but it
will be a hard error at some point in the future anyway, so clean it
up now.
- Locally allow new 'suspicious_runtime_symbol_definitions' lint for
Rust 1.98.0 (expected 2026-08-20).
- Globally allow 'clippy::unwrap_or_default' lint since it relies on
optimizations -- under 'CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=y' it does not
work well.
'kernel' crate:
- 'time' module: fix 'Delta::as_micros_ceil()' to round negative values
correctly.

selftests/xsk: account reclaimed invalid Tx descriptors
Invalid Tx descriptors are now returned through the completion ring, regardless of whether they form a standalone packet or belong to an invalid multi-buffer packet. The selftests previously counted only descriptors belonging to valid packets, with a special exception for some invalid multi-buffer packets in verbatim streams. This undercounts completion entries when a standalone invalid descriptor or another invalid packet is reclaimed by the kernel. Keep valid_pkts as the number of packets expected on the Rx side, but count every descriptor submitted to the Tx ring in valid_frags, as every such descriptor is now expected to be returned through the completion ring. Make fragment counting in verbatim mode follow the packet boundary instead of stopping at the first invalid fragment. Update custom stream generation so an invalid middle fragment terminates the generated Rx packet while Tx completion accounting still covers the complete invalid packet. Also add explicit end fragments after invalid middle descriptors. This exercises the kernel drain logic and verifies that subsequent valid packets are not interpreted as continuations of the invalid packet. selftests/xsk: fix too-many-frags multi-buffer Tx test
The too-many-frags test describes a packet that is valid from the Tx ring ownership point of view, but invalid for transmission because it exceeds the supported number of fragments. Keep the generated Tx descriptors valid so that __send_pkts() accounts them as outstanding descriptors that must be reclaimed through the CQ. Then mark the corresponding Rx packet invalid so the test still does not expect the oversized packet to appear on the receive side. Add a valid synchronization packet after the oversized packet so the test can verify that the Tx path drains the bad packet and resumes at the next packet boundary. selftests/net/af_unix: test listen() rejects wrong socket states
Add a regression test for the unix_listen() state check. The key case is
listen() on a bound socket that has already been connected: it is no
longer in TCP_CLOSE or TCP_LISTEN, so it must fail with EINVAL. A
prepare_peercred() call slipped in ahead of that check once left err at 0
and made listen() silently succeed there instead; this guards against a
repeat.
The neighbouring outcomes are covered too so they cannot regress the same
way: a bound socket in TCP_CLOSE listens fine, calling listen() again on a
socket already in TCP_LISTEN is allowed, and an unbound socket fails with
EINVAL.
Each case runs for both listenable socket types (SOCK_STREAM and
SOCK_SEQPACKET) and both pathname and abstract addresses.

selftests/ftrace: Reset triggers at top level before instance loop
When running instance tests, 'ftracetest' creates a new ftrace instance
and runs the tests inside it. Before starting each test, it executes
'initialize_system()' to reset the ftrace state to initial-state.
However, since 'initialize_system()' is executed in the context of the
instance directory, it only cleans up triggers and filters of that
instance.
Any triggers or dynamic events left behind in the top-level instance by
previous failed top-level tests, are left completely untouched. These
top-level leftovers can cause subsequent instance-based tests to fail
or even crash the kernel.
Fix this by executing 'initialize_system()' in the top-level tracing
directory once before entering the instance loop.

selftests/net: packetdrill: cover RST validation in SYN-RECEIVED
Add packetdrill coverage for the RFC 9293 reset checks on request sockets in SYN-RECEIVED. Verify that an exact RST removes the request, a non-exact in-window RST sends a challenge ACK without removing it, and an out-of-window RST is silently discarded. Also cover an RST|ACK with an unacceptable ACK number to ensure RST sequence validation runs before ACK-field validation. selftests: netfilter: nft_flowtable.sh: fix offload counter verification for tunnel tests
The IPIP and IP6IP6 tunnel tests call check_counters() to verify flowtable offloading occurred, but the flow-add rule only matches meta oif "veth1". When traffic is routed through a tunnel device, oif is the tunnel interface (tun0, tun6, etc.), not veth1, so the flow-add rule never fires, no flowtable entry is created, and counters stay at zero — producing a silent false pass. Fix by adding tunnel-specific flow-add rules for each tunnel interface. These match TCP dport 12345 traffic before the bare accept rule, set ct mark, add the flow to the flowtable, and increment routed_orig. The existing routed_repl rule on veth0 already handles the reply direction since decapsulated reply packets exit through the physical interface. Also add check_counters() for the IP6IP6 non-VLAN and IP6IP6-over-VLAN tests which previously used a bare PASS message. Fixes: |

selftests: netconsole: ignore busywait errors
In these netconsole tests, bash is used with errexit (set -e). It means that if the busywait timeout, the tests finish without printing an error message. It is fine to ignore these errors, because the following validate_xxx helpers will check the content of the output file, and exit with an appropriated error message, e.g. FAIL: File was not generated.
