We support decoding a binary type with a scalar subtype already,
add support for sending such arrays to the kernel. While at it
also support using "None" to indicate that the binary attribute
should be empty. I couldn't decide whether empty binary should
be [] or None, but there should be no harm in supporting both.

We default to raising an exception when unknown attrs are found
to make sure those are noticed during development.
When YNL CLI is "installed" and used by sysadmins erroring out
is not going to be helpful. It's far more likely the user space
is older than the kernel in that case, than that some attr is
misdefined or missing.

Use enum decoding on auto-ints. Looks like we only had enum
auto-ints for input values until now. Upcoming RSS work will
need this to declare an attribute with flags as a uint.

The multi message support loosened the connection between the request
and response handling, as we can now submit multiple requests before
we start processing responses. Passing the attr set to NlMsgs decoding
no longer makes sense (if it ever did), attr set may differ message
by messsage. Isolate the part of decoding responsible for attr-set
specific interpretation and call it once we identified the correct op.
Without this fix performing SET operation on an ethtool socket, while
being subscribed to notifications causes:

maximum rsize and wsize has been raised to 4MB. The default remains
at 1MB, but risk-seeking administrators now have the ability to try
larger I/O sizes with NFS clients that support them. Eventually the
default setting will be increased when we have confidence that this
change will not have negative impact.
With v6.16, NFSD now has its own debugfs file system where we can
add experimental features and make them available outside of our
development community without impacting production deployments. The
first experimental setting added is one that makes all NFS READ
operations use vfs_iter_read() instead of the NFSD splice actor. The
plan is to eventually retire the splice actor, as that will enable a
number of new capabilities such as the use of struct bio_vec from the
top to the bottom of the NFSD stack.
Jeff Layton contributed a number of observability improvements. The
use of dprintk() in a number of high-traffic code paths has been
replaced with static trace points.
This release sees the continuation of efforts to harden the NFSv4.2

Extend the Python YNL extack decoding to handle sub-messages in the same
way that YNL C does. This involves retaining the input values so that
they are available during extack decoding.

TC uses all possible sub-message formats:
- nested attrs
- fixed headers + nested attrs
- fixed headers
- empty
Nested attrs are already supported for rt-link. Add support
for remaining 3. The empty and fixed headers ones are fairly
trivial, we can fake a Binary or Flags type instead of a Nest.
For fixed headers + nest we need to teach nest parsing and
nest put to handle fixed headers.

The _multi_parse() helper calls the _attr_get() method of each attr,
but it only respects what code the helper wants to emit, not what
local variables it needs. Local variables will soon be needed,
support them.

RenderInfo describes a request-response exchange. Struct describes
a parsed attribute set. For ease of parsing sub-messages with
fixed headers move fixed header info from RenderInfo to Struct.

In rtnetlink all submessages had the selector at the same level
of nesting as the submessage. We could refer to the relevant
attribute from the current struct. In TC, stats are one level
of nesting deeper than "kind". Teach the code-gen about structs
which need to be passed a selector by the caller for parsing.
Because structs are "topologically sorted" one pass of propagating
the selectors down is enough.
For generating netlink message we depend on the presence bits
so no selector passing needed there.

Add a fairly complete example of rt-link usage. If run without any
arguments it simply lists the interfaces and some of their attrs.
If run with an arg it tries to create and delete a netkit device.

Sample creates the device first, it sets an invalid value for a netkit
attribute to trigger reverse parsing. Line 4 shows the error with the
attribute path correctly generated by YNL.
Then sample fixes the bad attribute and re-issues the request, with
NLM_F_ECHO set. This flag causes the notification to be looped back
to the initiating socket (our socket). Sample parses this notification
to save the ifindex of the created netkit.
Sample then proceeds to list the devices. Line 8 above shows a dummy
device with two alt names. Lines 9 and 10 show the netkit devices
the sample itself created.
The "primary" and "policy" attrs are from inside the netkit submsg.
The string values are auto-generated for the enums by YNL.
To clean up sample deletes the interface it created (line 11).

Reverse parsing lets YNL convert bad and missing attr pointers
from extack into a string like "missing attribute nest1.nest2.attr_name".
It's a feature that's unique to YNL C AFAIU (even the Python YNL
can't do nested reverse parsing). Add support for reverse-parsing
of sub-messages.
To simplify the logic and the code annotate the type policies
with extra metadata. Mark the selectors and the messages with
the information we need. We assume that key / selector always
precedes the sub-message while parsing (and also if there are
multiple sub-messages like in rt-link they are interleaved
selector 1 ... submsg 1 ... selector 2 .. submsg 2, not
selector 1 ... selector 2 ... submsg 1 ... submsg 2).
The rt-link sample in a subsequent changes shows reverse parsing
of sub-messages in action.

Adjust parsing and rendering appropriately to make sub-messages work.
Rendering is pretty trivial, as the submsg -> netlink conversion looks
like rendering a nest in which only one attr was set. Only trick
is that we use the enum value of the sub-message rather than the nest
as the type, and effectively skip one layer of nesting. A real double
nested struct would look like this:

A submsg "is" the nest so by skipping I mean:
[SELECTOR]

There is no extra validation in YNL if caller has set the selector
matching the submsg type (e.g. link type = "macvlan" but the nest
attrs are set to carry "veth"). Let the kernel handle that.
Parsing side is a little more specialized as we need to render and
insert a new kind of function which switches between what to parse
based on the selector. But code isn't too complicated.

The easiest (or perhaps only sane) way to support submessages in C
is to treat them as if they were nests. Build fake attributes to
that effect in the codegen. Render the submsg as a big nest of all
possible values.
With this in place the main missing part is to hook in the switch
which selects how to parse based on the key.

Prepare for constructing Struct() instances which represent
sub-messages rather than nested attributes.
Restructure the code / indentation to more easily insert
a case where nested reference comes from annotation other
than the 'nested-attributes' property. Make sure we don't
construct the Struct() object from scratch in multiple
places as the constructor will soon have more arguments.
This should cause no functional change.

When an XDR counted array has a maximum element count, xdrgen adds
a bounds check to the encoder or decoder for that type. But in cases
where the .x provides no maximum element count, such as

templates handle that correctly, but a few are incorrect and leave
the bounds check in place with a maximum of zero, which causes
encoding/decoding of that type to fail unconditionally.

This appears to be a bug since there are existing specs which omit
"nested-attributes" on "multi-attr" attributes. Also, according to
Documentation/userspace-api/netlink/specs.rst, multi-attr "is the
recommended way of implementing arrays (no extra nesting)", suggesting
that nesting should even be avoided in favor of multi-attr.
Fix the indentation of the if-block introduced by the commit to avoid
the error.

Support using a struct pointer for binary attrs. Len field is maintained
because the structs may grow with newer kernel versions. Or, which matters
more, be shorter if the binary is built against newer uAPI than kernel
against which it's executed. Since we are storing a pointer to a struct
type - always allocate at least the amount of memory needed by the struct
per current uAPI headers (unused mem is zeroed). Technically users should
check the length field but per modern ASAN checks storing a short object
under a pointer seems like a bad idea.

Sub-type annotation on binary attributes may indicate that the attribute
carries an array of simple types (also referred to as "C array" in docs).
Support rendering them as such in the C user code. For example for u32,
instead of:

Each YNL struct contains the data and a sub-struct indicating which
fields are valid. Something like:

Note that the bin object 'bin' has a length stored, and that length
has a _len suffix added to the field name. This breaks if there
is a explicit field called bin_len, which is the case for some
TC actions. Move the length fields out of the _present struct,
create a new struct called _len:

Strings from the kernel are guaranteed to be null terminated and
ynl_attr_validate() checks for this. But it doesn't check if the string
has a len of 0, which would cause problems when trying to access
data[len - 1]. Fix this by checking that len is positive.

rtnetlink has variety of ops with different fixed headers.
Detect that op fixed header is not the same as family one,
and use sizeof() directly. For reverse parsing we need to
pass the fixed header len along the policy (in the socket
state).

rt-link has a vlan-protocols enum with:

It's nice to have, since it converts the values to strings in Python.
For C, however, the codegen is trying to use enums to generate strict
policy checks. Parsing such sparse enums is not possible via policies.
Since for classic netlink we don't support kernel codegen and policy
generation - skip the auto-generation of checks from enums.

Binary types with struct are fixed size, relatively easy to
handle for multi attr. Declare the member as a pointer.
Count the members, allocate an array, copy in the data.
Allow the netlink attr to be smaller or larger than our view
of the struct in case the build headers are newer or older
than the running kernel.

Add support for multi attr strings (needed for link alt_names).
We record the length individual strings in a len member, to do
the same for multi-attr create a struct ynl_string in ynl.h
and use it as a layer holding both the string and its length.
Since strings may be arbitrary length dynamically allocate each
individual one.
Adjust arg_member and struct member to avoid spacing the double
pointers to get "type **name;" rather than "type * *name;"

Allow CRUD-style notification where the notification is more
like the response to the request, which can optionally be
looped back onto the requesting socket. Since the notification
and request are different ops in the spec, for example:

Classic netlink makes extensive use of flags. Support specifying
them the same way as attributes are specified (using a helper),
for example:
rt_link_newlink_req_set_nlflags(req, NLM_F_CREATE | NLM_F_ECHO);
Wrap the code up in a RenderInfo predicate. I think that some
genetlink families may want this, too. It should be easy to
add a spec property later.

rt-link has a number of disjoint headers, plus it uses attributes
of other families (e.g. DPLL). Allow declaring a attribute set
as "foreign" by specifying which header its definition is coming
from.

Various new families and my recent work on rtnetlink missed
adding dependencies on C headers. If the system headers are
up to date or don't include a given header at all this doesn't
make a difference. But if the system headers are in place but
stale - compilation will break.

ArrayNest AKA indexed-array support currently skips inner type
validation. We count the attributes and then we parse them,
make sure we call validate, too. Otherwise buggy / unexpected
kernel response may lead to crashes.

When user calls request_attrA_set() multiple times (for the same
attribute), and attrA is of type which allocates memory -
we try to free the previously associated values. For array
types (including multi-attr) we have only freed the array,
but the array may have contained pointers.
Refactor the code generation for free attr and reuse the generated
lines in setters to flush out the previous state. Since setters
are static inlines in the header we need to add forward declarations
for the free helpers of pure nested structs. Track which types get
used by arrays and include the right forwad declarations.
At least ethtool string set and bit set would not be freed without
this. Tho, admittedly, overriding already set attribute twice is likely
a very very rare thing to do.

The "function writing helper" tries to put local variables
between prototype and the opening bracket. Clearly wrong,
but up until now nothing actually uses it to write local

If the type for the response to do and dump are the same we don't
generate it twice. This is called "type_consistent" in the generator.
Consider operations which only have dump to also be consistent.
This removes unnecessary "_dump" from the names. There's a number
of GET ops in classic Netlink which only have dump handlers.
Make sure we output the "onesided" types, normally if the type
is consistent we only output it when we render the do structures.

C codegen skips generating the structs if request/reply has no attrs.
In such cases the request op takes no argument and return int
(rather than response struct). In case of classic netlink a lot of
information gets passed using the fixed struct, however, so adjust
the logic to consider a request empty only if it has no attrs _and_
no fixed struct.

Classic netlink has static family IDs specified in YAML,
there is no family name -> ID lookup. Support providing
the ID info to the library via the generated struct and
make library use it. Since NETLINK_ROUTE is ID 0 we need
an extra boolean to indicate classic_id is to be used.

_decode_array_attr() uses variable subattrs in every branch when only
one branch decodes more than a single attribute.

The Makefile.deps lists uAPI headers to make the build work when
system headers are older than in-tree headers. The problem doesn't
occur for new headers, because system headers are not there at all.
But out-of-tree YNL clone on GH also uses this header to identify
header dependencies, and one day the system headers will exist,
and will get out of date. So let's add the headers we missed.
I don't think this is a fix, but FWIW the commits which added
the missing headers are:

A definition with a "header" property is an "external" definition
for C code, as in it is defined already in another C header file.
Other languages will need the exact value but C codegen should
not recreate it. So don't output those definitions in the uAPI
header.

netlink reports which attribute was incorrect by sending back
an attribute offset. Offset points to the address of struct nlattr,
but to interpret the type we also need the nesting path.
Attribute IDs have different meaning in different nests
of the same message.
Correct the condition for "is the offset within current attribute".
ynl_attr_data_len() does not include the attribute header,
so the end offset was off by 4 bytes.
This means that we'd always skip over flags and empty nests.
The devmem tests, for example, issues an invalid request with
empty queue nests, resulting in the following error:
YNL failed: Kernel error: missing attribute: .queues.ifindex
The message is incorrect, "queues" nest does not have an "ifindex"
attribute defined. With this fix we decend correctly into the nest:

Empty nests are the same size as a flag at the netlink level
(just a 4 byte nlattr without a payload). They are sometimes
useful in case we want to only communicate a presence of
something but may want to add more details later.
This may be the case in the upcoming io_uring ZC patches,
for example.
Improve handling of nested empty structs. We already support
empty structs since a lot of netlink replies are empty, but
for nested ones we need minor tweaks to avoid pointless empty
lines and unused variables.

When parsing throws an exception one often has to figure out which
attribute couldn't be parsed from first principles. For families
with large message parsing trees like rtnetlink guessing the
attribute can be hard.

Make sure replace / with _ in the uAPI header guard, the c_upper()

In particular, client-side source code needs the definition of
"struct rpc_procinfo" and does not want header files that pull

This tracepoint was a "note to self" and is not operational. It is
added only to client-side code, which so far we haven't needed. It
will cause immediate breakage once we start generating client code,
though, so remove it now.

The notification handling in ynl is currently very simple, using sleep()
to wait a period of time and then handling all the buffered messages in
a single batch.
This patch adds async notification handling so that messages can be
processed as they are received. This makes it possible to use ynl as a
library that supplies notifications in a timely manner.
- Add poll_ntf() to be a generator that yields 1 notification at a
time and blocks until a notification is available.
- Add a --duration parameter to the CLI, with --sleep as an alias.

The cli will report any notifications for duration seconds and then
exit. If duration is not specified, then it will poll forever, until
interrupted.

Package build environments like Fedora rpmbuild introduced hardening
options (e.g. -pie -Wl,-z,now) by passing a -spec option to CFLAGS
and LDFLAGS.
ynl Makefiles currently override CFLAGS but not LDFLAGS, which leads
to a mismatch and build failure:

Not yet complete.
The tool doesn't do any math yet. Thus, even though the maximum XDR
width of a union is the width of the union enumerator plus the width
of its largest arm, we're using the sum of all the elements of the
union for the moment.
This means that buffer size requirements are overestimated, and that
the generated maxsize macro cannot yet be used for determining data
element alignment in the XDR buffer.

The XDR width of a pointer type is the sum of the widths of each of
the struct's fields, except for the last field. The width of the
implicit boolean "value follows" field is added as well.

The byte size of a variable-length opaque is conveyed in an unsigned
integer. If there is a specified maximum size, that is included in
the type's widths list.

The generic parts of the RPC layer need to know the widths (in
XDR_UNIT increments) of the XDR data types defined for each
protocol.
As a first step, add dictionaries to keep track of the symbolic and
actual maximum XDR width of XDR types.
This makes it straightforward to look up the width of a type by its
name. The built-in dictionaries are pre-loaded with the widths of
the built-in XDR types as defined in RFC 4506.

In order to compute the numeric on-the-wire width of XDR types,
xdrgen needs to keep track of the numeric value of constants that
are defined in the input specification so it can perform
calculations with those values.

Sometimes the names of the enum entries are self-explanatory
or come from standards. Forcing authors to write trivial kdoc
for each of such entries seems unreasonable, but kdoc would
complain about undocumented entries.
Detect enums which only have documentation for the entire
type and no documentation for entries. Render their doc
as a plain comment.

Change ynl-gen-c.py to use NLA_BE16 and NLA_BE32 types to represent
big-endian u16 and u32 ynl types.
Doing this enables those attributes to have range checks applied, as
the validator will then convert to host endianness prior to validation.
The autogenerated kernel/uapi code have been regenerated by running:
./tools/net/ynl/ynl-regen.sh -f
This changes the policy types of the following attributes:
FOU_ATTR_PORT (NLA_U16 -> NLA_BE16)
FOU_ATTR_PEER_PORT (NLA_U16 -> NLA_BE16)
These two are used with nla_get_be16/nla_put_be16().
MPTCP_PM_ADDR_ATTR_ADDR4 (NLA_U32 -> NLA_BE32)
This one is used with nla_get_in_addr/nla_put_in_addr(),
which uses nla_get_be32/nla_put_be32().
IOWs the generated changes are AFAICT aligned with their implementations.
The generated userspace code remains identical, and have been verified
by comparing the output generated by the following command:
make -C tools/net/ynl/generated

YNL specs can use string expressions for limits, like s32-min
or u16-max. We convert all of those into their numeric values
when generating the code, which isn't always helpful. Try to
retain the string representations in the output. Any sort of
calculations still need the integers.

I noticed that "xdrgen source" reorders the procedure encoder and
decoder functions every time it is run. I would prefer that the
generated code be more deterministic: it enables a reader to better
see exactly what has changed between runs of the tool.
The problem is that Python sets are not ordered. I use a Python set
to ensure that, when multiple procedures use a particular argument or
result type, the encoder/decoder for that type is emitted only once.
Sets aren't ordered, but I can use Python dictionaries for this
purpose to ensure the procedure functions are always emitted in the
same order if the .x file does not change.

xdr_stream_encode_u32() returns XDR_UNIT on success.
xdr_stream_decode_u32() returns zero or -EMSGSIZE, but never

Add a Python-based tool for translating XDR specifications into XDR
encoder and decoder functions written in the Linux kernel's C coding
style. The generator attempts to match the usual C coding style of
the Linux kernel's SunRPC consumers.
This approach is similar to the netlink code generator in
tools/net/ynl .
The maintainability benefits of machine-generated XDR code include:
- Stronger type checking
- Reduces the number of bugs introduced by human error
- Makes the XDR code easier to audit and analyze
- Enables rapid prototyping of new RPC-based protocols
- Hardens the layering between protocol logic and marshaling
- Makes it easier to add observability on demand
- Unit tests might be built for both the tool and (automatically)
for the generated code
In addition, converting the XDR layer to use memory-safe languages
such as Rust will be easier if much of the code can be converted
automatically.

ncdevmem is a devmem TCP netcat. It works similarly to netcat, but it
sends and receives data using the devmem TCP APIs. It uses udmabuf as
the dmabuf provider. It is compatible with a regular netcat running on
a peer, or a ncdevmem running on a peer.
In addition to normal netcat support, ncdevmem has a validation mode,
where it sends a specific pattern and validates this pattern on the
receiver side to ensure data integrity.

Allow the op to be obtained within NetlinkProtocol.decode(..) itself if the
op was not passed to the decode function, thus allow parsing of Generic
Netlink notifications without causing the failure.

Someone reported on GitHub that the YNL NIPA test is failing
when run locally. The test builds the tools, and it hits:

Currently the parsing code generator assumes that the yaml
specification file name and the main 'name' attribute carried
inside correspond, that is the field is the c-name representation
of the file basename.
The above assumption held true within the current tree, but will be
hopefully broken soon by the upcoming net shaper specification.
Additionally, it makes the field 'name' itself useless.
Lift the assumption, always computing the generated include file
name from the generated c file name.

Add a protocol spec for tcp_metrics, so that it's accessible via YNL.
Useful at the very least for testing fixes.
In this episode of "10,000 ways to complicate netlink" the metric
nest has defines which are off by 1. iproute2 does:

CMIS compliant modules such as QSFP-DD might be running a firmware that
can be updated in a vendor-neutral way by exchanging messages between
the host and the module as described in section 7.3.1 of revision 5.2 of
the CMIS standard.
Add a pair of new ethtool messages that allow:
* User space to trigger firmware update of transceiver modules
* The kernel to notify user space about the progress of the process
The user interface is designed to be asynchronous in order to avoid
RTNL being held for too long and to allow several modules to be
updated simultaneously. The interface is designed with CMIS compliant
modules in mind, but kept generic enough to accommodate future use
cases, if these arise.

For type String and Binary we are currently usinig the exact-len
limit value as is without attempting any name resolution.
However, the spec may specify the name of a constant rather than an
actual value, which would result in using the constant name as is
and thus break the policy.
Ensure the limit value is passed to get_limit(), which will always
attempt resolving the name before printing the policy rule.

NLMSG_DONE contains an error code, it has to be extracted.
Prior to this change all dumps will end in success,
and in case of failure the result is silently truncated.

Add a "--multi <do-op> <json>" command line to ynl that makes it
possible to add several operations to a single netlink request payload.
The --multi command line option is repeated for each operation.
This is used by the nftables family for transaction batches. For

NetlinkProtocol.decode() was looking up ops by response value which breaks
when it is used for extack decoding of directional ops. Instead, pass
the op to decode().

YNL currently reports None for empty dump:
$ cli.py ...netdev.yaml --dump page-pool-get
None
This doesn't matter for the CLI but when writing YNL based tests
having to deal with either list or None is annoying. Limit the
None conversion to non-dump ops:

ethtool.py depends on yml files in a specific location of the linux kernel
tree. Using relative lookup for those files means that ethtool.py would
need to be run under tools/net/ynl/. Lookup needed yml files without
depending on the current working directory that ethtool.py is invoked from.

Checking if dump is empty requires a couple of casts.
Add a convenient wrapper.
Add an example use in the netdev sample, loopback is always
present so an empty dump is an error.

Update ynl-gen-rst to generate hyperlinks to definitions, attribute
sets and sub-messages from all the places that reference them.
Note that there is a single label namespace for all of the kernel docs.
Hyperlinks within a single netlink doc need to be qualified by the
family name to avoid collisions.
The label format is 'family-type-name' which gives, for example,
'rt-link-attribute-set-link-attrs' as the link id.

The tables of contents in the generated Netlink docs include individual
attribute definitions. This can make the contents exceedingly long and
repeats a lot of what is on the rest of the pages. See for example:

Add a depth limit to the contents directive in generated .rst files to
limit the contents depth to 3 levels. This reduces the contents to:

When we set members of simple nested structures in requests
we need to set "presence" bits for all the nesting layers
below. This has nothing to do with the presence type of
the last layer.

The family struct is auto-generated for new families, support
use of the sock_priv_* mechanism added in commit a731132424
("genetlink: introduce per-sock family private storage").
For example if the family wants to use struct sk_buff as its
private struct (unrealistic but just for illustration), it would
add to its spec:

Support using pre-defined values in checks so we don't need to use hard
code number for the string, binary length. e.g. we have a definition like

Running the page-pool sample on production machines under moderate
networking load shows recycling rate higher than 100%:
$ page-pool

Note that outstanding refs (89088) == slow alloc * cache size (1392 * 64)
which means this machine is recycling page pool pages perfectly, not
a single page has been released.
The extra 0.3% is because sample ignores allocations from the ptr_ring.
Treat those the same as alloc_fast, the ring vs cache alloc is
already captured accurately enough by recycling stats.
With the fix:
$ page-pool

ynl-gen-c generates e.g. 'calloc(mcast_groups, sizeof(*dst->mcast_groups))'
for array-nest attrs when it should be 'n_mcast_groups'.

failures. Handle the NlError exceptions and report the netlink errors
more cleanly.

Extack decoding was using a hard-coded msg header size of 20 but
netlink-raw has a header size of 16.
Use a protocol specific msghdr_size() when decoding the attr offssets.

Donald points out that we don't check for overflows.
Stash the length of the message on nlmsg_pid (nlmsg_seq would
do as well). This allows the attribute helpers to remain
self-contained (no extra arguments). Also let the put
helpers continue to return nothing. The error is checked
only in (newly introduced) ynl_msg_end().

Most "production" netlink clients use large buffers to
make dump efficient, which means that handling of dump
continuation in the kernel is not very well tested.
Add an option for debugging / testing handling of dumps.
It enables printing of extra netlink-level debug and
lowers the recv() buffer size in one go. When used
without any argument (--dbg-small-recv) it picks
a very small default (4000), explicit size can be set,
too (--dbg-small-recv 5000).
Example:

Make the size of the buffer we use for recv() configurable.
The details of the buffer sizing in netlink are somewhat
arcane, we could spend a lot of time polishing this API.
Let's just leave some hopefully helpful comments for now.
This is a for-developers-only feature, anyway.

The make target to remove all generated files used to be called
"hardclean" because it deleted files which were tracked by git.
We no longer track generated user space files, so use the more
common "distclean" name.

To stick to libmnl wrappers in the past we had to use poll()
to check if there are any outstanding notifications on the socket.
This is no longer necessary, we can use MSG_DONTWAIT.
