658eb69654 tcp: rehash onto different local ECMP path on retransmit timeout
Currently sk_rethink_txhash() re-rolls the socket's txhash on RTO, PLB,
and spurious-retransmission events, but the cached route is reused and
the new hash is not propagated into the ECMP path selection logic. Two
changes are needed to make rehash select a different local ECMP path:

1. Add __sk_dst_reset() alongside sk_rethink_txhash() in
   tcp_write_timeout(), tcp_rcv_spurious_retrans(), and
   tcp_plb_check_rehash() so the cached dst is invalidated and the
   next transmit triggers a fresh route lookup.

2. Set fl6->mp_hash from sk_txhash (or tcp_rsk(req)->txhash for
   SYN/ACK retransmits and syncookies) in tcp_v6_connect(),
   inet6_sk_rebuild_header(), inet6_csk_route_req(),
   inet6_csk_route_socket(), tcp_v6_send_response(), and
   cookie_v6_check() so fib6_select_path() picks a path based on the
   new hash.

The mp_hash override only applies to fib_multipath_hash_policy 0 (the
default L3 policy). Its hash includes the flow label, but that is 0 by
default -- np->flow_label is unset, and auto_flowlabels only computes
the on-wire label later, per packet -- so flows to the same peer share
one local path. Keying the hash on sk_txhash makes the local path
per-connection and lets a rehash re-select it. Policies 1-3 are left
unchanged.

The mp_hash assignment is factored into a small helper,
ip6_ecmp_set_mp_hash(), shared by inet6_csk_route_req(),
inet6_csk_route_socket(), tcp_v6_connect(), inet6_sk_rebuild_header(),
tcp_v6_send_response(), and cookie_v6_check().  It applies
(txhash >> 1) ?: 1 for policy 0 (the >> 1 keeps mp_hash in the 31-bit
range; ?: 1 keeps it non-zero, since 0 would fall back to
rt6_multipath_hash()). inet6_csk_route_socket() calls it only for
sk_protocol == IPPROTO_TCP so that non-TCP callers (e.g., L2TP via
inet6_csk_xmit) fall through to rt6_multipath_hash() and retain their
existing flow-key-based ECMP behavior.

tcp_v6_send_response() also sets mp_hash from the response txhash so
that a control packet (a RST from the full socket, or an ACK from a
time-wait socket) selects the same local ECMP nexthop as the
connection's txhash rather than falling back to the flow hash. The
time-wait socket's tw_txhash is copied from sk_txhash when the
connection enters TIME_WAIT, so it reflects any rehash that occurred.

Setting mp_hash explicitly is necessary because the default ECMP hash
derives from fl6->flowlabel via np->flow_label, which is not updated
from sk_txhash (REPFLOW is off by default). ip6_make_flowlabel()
cannot help either, as it runs after the route lookup.

As a consequence, for policy 0 the local ECMP path of an IPv6 TCP
flow follows sk_txhash even when fl6->flowlabel is non-zero, e.g. a
reflected (REPFLOW) or explicitly set (IPV6_FLOWLABEL_MGR) flow
label. This is intentional: only local path selection changes, so
rehash can recover from a failed path; the on-wire flow label is
unchanged.

sk_set_txhash() is moved before ip6_dst_lookup_flow() in
tcp_v6_connect() so the initial ECMP path is selected by the same
txhash that subsequent route rebuilds will use. This avoids
unintended path changes when the cached dst is naturally invalidated
(e.g., by PMTU discovery or route changes).

The rehash sites (tcp_write_timeout(), tcp_plb_check_rehash(), and
tcp_rcv_spurious_retrans()) call __sk_rethink_txhash_reset_dst(),
which re-rolls the txhash and, when it changed, drops the cached dst
so the next transmit re-runs route selection. The dst reset is
guarded by sk->sk_family == AF_INET6 since IPv4 ECMP does not
currently use sk_txhash for path selection. For IPv4-mapped IPv6
sockets this produces a redundant dst reset on a cold path
(RTO/PLB); the subsequent IPv4 route lookup returns the same result.
The helper is deliberately separate from sk_rethink_txhash() itself:
dst_negative_advice() calls sk_rethink_txhash() before its own dst op,
so resetting the dst inside sk_rethink_txhash() would skip that op
(e.g. rt6_remove_exception_rt()).

For syncookies, cookie_init_sequence() computes the cookie value
before route_req() and sets txhash so the SYN-ACK selects the same
ECMP path that cookie_v6_check() will use when the full socket is
created. cookie_tcp_reqsk_init() derives txhash from the cookie so
the full socket's ECMP path matches the SYN-ACK. Both the SYN-ACK
assignment in tcp_conn_request() and the full-socket assignment in
cookie_tcp_reqsk_init() set txhash from the cookie for IPv4 and IPv6
alike. On IPv6 this drives ECMP path selection; on IPv4, which does
not use sk_txhash for ECMP, it only affects TX-queue selection. That
selection scales the hash by its high bits (reciprocal_scale()), which
are uniform in the keyed secure_tcp_syn_cookie() output -- the MSS index
only perturbs the low bits -- so the queue distribution matches
net_tx_rndhash().

cookie_init_sequence() is split from the former version that also
called tcp_synq_overflow() and incremented SYNCOOKIESSENT; those
side effects are now in cookie_record_sent(), called after
route_req() succeeds so they are not bumped when route_req() fails.
cookie_record_sent() is guarded by CONFIG_SYN_COOKIES to
match the guard on tcp_synq_overflow(). route_req() receives 0 as
tw_isn for the syncookie path so that tcp_v6_init_req() still saves
ireq->pktopts for REPFLOW flowlabel reflection and IPv6 cmsg
options. The ecn_ok clear for syncookies without timestamps stays
after tcp_ecn_create_request() so it takes precedence.

2b9f6f7065 tcp: make probe0 timer handle expired user timeout
tcp_clamp_probe0_to_user_timeout() computes remaining time in jiffies
using subtraction with an unsigned lvalue. If elapsed probing time
exceeds the configured TCP_USER_TIMEOUT, the underflow yields a large
value.

This ends up re-arming the probe timer for a full backoff interval
instead of expiring immediately, delaying connection teardown beyond
the configured timeout.

Fix this by preventing underflow so user-set timeout expiration is
handled correctly without extending the probe timer.

Based on Section 3.1.5 of AccECN spec (RFC9768), a TCP Server in
AccECN mode MUST NOT set ECT on any packet for the rest of the connection,
if it has received or sent at least one valid SYN or Acceptable SYN/ACK

    performance under UDP flood by as much as 10%.

  - Avoid skb_clone() dance in ping_rcv() to improve performance under
    ping flood.

  - Rework network device creation (in-kernel) API to more clearly
    identify network namespaces and their roles.
    There are up to 4 namespace roles but we used to have just 2 netns
    pointer arguments, interpreted differently based on context.

  - Use sysfs_break_active_protection() instead of trylock to avoid
    deadlocks between unregistering objects and sysfs access.

  - Add a new sysctl and sockopt for capping max retransmit timeout
    in TCP.

  - Support masking port and DSCP in routing rule matches.

  - Support dumping IPv4 multicast addresses with RTM_GETMULTICAST.

  - Support specifying at what time packet should be sent on AF_XDP
    sockets.

  - Age FDB entries based on Rx not Tx traffic in VxLAN, similar
    to normal bridging.

  - Allow users to specify source port range for GENEVE tunnels.

  - netconsole: allow attaching kernel release, CPU ID and task name
    to messages as metadata

54a378f434 tcp: add the ability to control max RTO
Currently, TCP stack uses a constant (120 seconds)
to limit the RTO value exponential growth.

Some applications want to set a lower value.

Add TCP_RTO_MAX_MS socket option to set a value (in ms)
between 1 and 120 seconds.

It is discouraged to change the socket rto max on a live
socket, as it might lead to unexpected disconnects.

Following patch is adding a netns sysctl to control the

81df4fa94e tcp: add a fast path in tcp_delack_timer()
delack timer is not stopped from inet_csk_clear_xmit_timer()
because we do not define INET_CSK_CLEAR_TIMERS.

This is a conscious choice : inet_csk_clear_xmit_timer()
is often called from another cpu. Calling del_timer()
would cause false sharing and lock contention.

This means that very often, tcp_delack_timer() is called
at the timer expiration, while there is no ACK to transmit.

This can be detected very early, avoiding the socket spinlock.

Notes:
- test about tp->compressed_ack is racy,
  but in the unlikely case there is a race, the dedicated
  compressed_ack_timer hrtimer would close it.

- Even if the fast path is not taken, reading
  icsk->icsk_ack.pending and tp->compressed_ack
  before acquiring the socket spinlock reduces
  acquisition time and chances of contention.

retransmit timer is not stopped from inet_csk_clear_xmit_timer()

97a9063518 tcp: avoid too many retransmit packets
If a TCP socket is using TCP_USER_TIMEOUT, and the other peer
retracted its window to zero, tcp_retransmit_timer() can
retransmit a packet every two jiffies (2 ms for HZ=1000),
for about 4 minutes after TCP_USER_TIMEOUT has 'expired'.

The fix is to make sure tcp_rtx_probe0_timed_out() takes
icsk->icsk_user_timeout into account.

Before blamed commit, the socket would not timeout after
icsk->icsk_user_timeout, but would use standard exponential
backoff for the retransmits.

Also worth noting that before commit e89688e3e9 ("net: tcp:
fix unexcepted socket die when snd_wnd is 0"), the issue
would last 2 minutes instead of 4.

0ec986ed7b tcp: fix incorrect undo caused by DSACK of TLP retransmit
Loss recovery undo_retrans bookkeeping had a long-standing bug where a
DSACK from a spurious TLP retransmit packet could cause an erroneous
undo of a fast recovery or RTO recovery that repaired a single
really-lost packet (in a sequence range outside that of the TLP
retransmit). Basically, because the loss recovery state machine didn't
account for the fact that it sent a TLP retransmit, the DSACK for the
TLP retransmit could erroneously be implicitly be interpreted as
corresponding to the normal fast recovery or RTO recovery retransmit
that plugged a real hole, thus resulting in an improper undo.

For example, consider the following buggy scenario where there is a
real packet loss but the congestion control response is improperly
undone because of this bug:

+ send packets P1, P2, P3, P4
+ P1 is really lost
+ send TLP retransmit of P4
+ receive SACK for original P2, P3, P4
+ enter fast recovery, fast-retransmit P1, increment undo_retrans to 1
+ receive DSACK for TLP P4, decrement undo_retrans to 0, undo (bug!)
+ receive cumulative ACK for P1-P4 (fast retransmit plugged real hole)

The fix: when we initialize undo machinery in tcp_init_undo(), if
there is a TLP retransmit in flight, then increment tp->undo_retrans
so that we make sure that we receive a DSACK corresponding to the TLP
retransmit, as well as DSACKs for all later normal retransmits, before
triggering a loss recovery undo. Note that we also have to move the
line that clears tp->tlp_high_seq for RTO recovery, so that upon RTO
we remember the tp->tlp_high_seq value until tcp_init_undo() and clear
it only afterward.

Also note that the bug dates back to the original 2013 TLP
implementation, commit 6ba8a3b19e ("tcp: Tail loss probe (TLP)").

However, this patch will only compile and work correctly with kernels
that have tp->tlp_retrans, which was added only in v5.8 in 2020 in
commit 76be93fc07 ("tcp: allow at most one TLP probe per flight").
So we associate this fix with that later commit.

36534d3c54 tcp: use signed arithmetic in tcp_rtx_probe0_timed_out()
Due to timer wheel implementation, a timer will usually fire
after its schedule.

For instance, for HZ=1000, a timeout between 512ms and 4s
has a granularity of 64ms.
For this range of values, the extra delay could be up to 63ms.

For TCP, this means that tp->rcv_tstamp may be after
inet_csk(sk)->icsk_timeout whenever the timer interrupt
finally triggers, if one packet came during the extra delay.

We need to make sure tcp_rtx_probe0_timed_out() handles this case.

853c3bd7b7 tcp: fix race in tcp_write_err()
I noticed flakes in a packetdrill test, expecting an epoll_wait()
to return EPOLLERR | EPOLLHUP on a failed connect() attempt,
after multiple SYN retransmits. It sometimes return EPOLLERR only.

The issue is that tcp_write_err():
 1) writes an error in sk->sk_err,
 2) calls sk_error_report(),
 3) then calls tcp_done().

tcp_done() is writing SHUTDOWN_MASK into sk->sk_shutdown,
among other things.

Problem is that the awaken user thread (from 2) sk_error_report())
might call tcp_poll() before tcp_done() has written sk->sk_shutdown.

tcp_poll() only sees a non zero sk->sk_err and returns EPOLLERR.

This patch fixes the issue by making sure to call sk_error_report()
after tcp_done().

tcp_write_err() also lacks an smp_wmb().

We can reuse tcp_done_with_error() to factor out the details,
as Neal suggested.

14dd92d0a1 tcp: use tp->total_rto to track number of linear timeouts in SYN_SENT state
In commit ccce324dab ("tcp: make the first N SYN RTO backoffs linear")
David used icsk->icsk_backoff field to track the number of linear timeouts.

Since then, tp->total_rto has been added.

This commit uses tp->total_rto instead of icsk->icsk_backoff
so that tcp_ld_RTO_revert() no longer can trigger an overflow
in inet_csk_rto_backoff(). Other than the potential UBSAN
report, there was no issue because receiving an ICMP message
currently aborts the connect().

In the following patch, we want to adhere to RFC 6069
and RFC 1122 4.2.3.9.

614e8316aa tcp: add support for usec resolution in TCP TS values
Back in 2015, Van Jacobson suggested to use usec resolution in TCP TS values.
This has been implemented in our private kernels.

Goals were :

1) better observability of delays in networking stacks.
2) better disambiguation of events based on TSval/ecr values.
3) building block for congestion control modules needing usec resolution.

Back then we implemented a schem based on private SYN options
to negotiate the feature.

For upstream submission, we chose to use a route attribute,
because this feature is probably going to be used in private
networks [1] [2].

ip route add 10/8 ... features tcp_usec_ts

Note that RFC 7323 recommends a
  "timestamp clock frequency in the range 1 ms to 1 sec per tick.",
but also mentions
  "the maximum acceptable clock frequency is one tick every 59 ns."

[1] Unfortunately RFC 7323 5.5 (Outdated Timestamps) suggests
to invalidate TS.Recent values after a flow was idle for more
than 24 days. This is the part making usec_ts a problem
for peers following this recommendation for long living
idle flows.

[2] Attempts to standardize usec ts went nowhere:

3868ab0f19 tcp: new TCP_INFO stats for RTO events
The 2023 SIGCOMM paper "Improving Network Availability with Protective
ReRoute" has indicated Linux TCP's RTO-triggered txhash rehashing can
effectively reduce application disruption during outages. To better
measure the efficacy of this feature, this patch adds three more
detailed stats during RTO recovery and exports via TCP_INFO.
Applications and monitoring systems can leverage this data to measure
the network path diversity and end-to-end repair latency during network
outages to improve their network infrastructure.

The following counters are added to tcp_sock in order to track RTO
events over the lifetime of a TCP socket.

1. u16 total_rto - Counts the total number of RTO timeouts.
2. u16 total_rto_recoveries - Counts the total number of RTO recoveries.
3. u32 total_rto_time - Counts the total time spent (ms) in RTO
                        recoveries. (time spent in CA_Loss and
                        CA_Recovery states)

To compute total_rto_time, we add a new u32 rto_stamp field to
tcp_sock. rto_stamp records the start timestamp (ms) of the last RTO
recovery (CA_Loss).

Corresponding fields are also added to the tcp_info struct.

e4dd0d3a2f net: fix the RTO timer retransmitting skb every 1ms if linear option is enabled
In the real workload, I encountered an issue which could cause the RTO
timer to retransmit the skb per 1ms with linear option enabled. The amount
of lost-retransmitted skbs can go up to 1000+ instantly.

The root cause is that if the icsk_rto happens to be zero in the 6th round
(which is the TCP_THIN_LINEAR_RETRIES value), then it will always be zero
due to the changed calculation method in tcp_retransmit_timer() as follows:

icsk->icsk_rto = min(icsk->icsk_rto << 1, TCP_RTO_MAX);

Above line could be converted to
icsk->icsk_rto = min(0 << 1, TCP_RTO_MAX) = 0

Therefore, the timer expires so quickly without any doubt.

I read through the RFC 6298 and found that the RTO value can be rounded
up to a certain value, in Linux, say TCP_RTO_MIN as default, which is
regarded as the lower bound in this patch as suggested by Eric.

031c44b752 net: tcp: refactor the dbg message in tcp_retransmit_timer()
The debug message in tcp_retransmit_timer() is slightly wrong, because
they could be printed even if we did not receive a new ACK packet from
the remote peer.

Change it to probing zero-window, as it is a expected case now. The
description may be not correct.

Adding the duration since the last ACK we received, and the duration of
the retransmission, which are useful for debugging.

And the message now like this:

e89688e3e9 net: tcp: fix unexcepted socket die when snd_wnd is 0
In tcp_retransmit_timer(), a window shrunk connection will be regarded
as timeout if 'tcp_jiffies32 - tp->rcv_tstamp > TCP_RTO_MAX'. This is not
right all the time.

The retransmits will become zero-window probes in tcp_retransmit_timer()
if the 'snd_wnd==0'. Therefore, the icsk->icsk_rto will come up to
TCP_RTO_MAX sooner or later.

However, the timer can be delayed and be triggered after 122877ms, not
TCP_RTO_MAX, as I tested.

Therefore, 'tcp_jiffies32 - tp->rcv_tstamp > TCP_RTO_MAX' is always true
once the RTO come up to TCP_RTO_MAX, and the socket will die.

Fix this by replacing the 'tcp_jiffies32' with '(u32)icsk->icsk_timeout',
which is exact the timestamp of the timeout.

However, "tp->rcv_tstamp" can restart from idle, then tp->rcv_tstamp
could already be a long time (minutes or hours) in the past even on the
first RTO. So we double check the timeout with the duration of the
retransmission.

Meanwhile, making "2 * TCP_RTO_MAX" as the timeout to avoid the socket
dying too soon.
