powerpc/perf: fix preempt count underflow in fsl_emb_pmu_del
fsl_emb_pmu_del() unconditionally calls put_cpu_var(cpu_hw_events) at
the 'out:' label, but only calls the matching get_cpu_var() after the
'i < 0' early-return check. When event->hw.idx is negative the
function jumps to 'out:' without having taken get_cpu_var(), and the
trailing put_cpu_var() then issues an unmatched preempt_enable(),
underflowing preempt_count.
On a CONFIG_PREEMPT=y kernel preempt_count would underflow and
eventually present as a 'scheduling while atomic' BUG.
Move put_cpu_var() to pair with get_cpu_var() so the percpu access is
correctly bracketed and the 'out:' label only handles perf_pmu_enable.

powerpc: use sysfs_emit{_at} in sysfs show functions
Replace sprintf() with sysfs_emit() and sysfs_emit_at() in sysfs show functions, which are preferred for formatting sysfs output because they provide safer bounds checking. While the current code only emits strings that fit easily within PAGE_SIZE, use sysfs_emit() and sysfs_emit_at() to follow secure coding best practices. This is a mechanical cleanup with a few simple edge cases: - In domains_show(), drop the redundant n < 0 check since neither sprintf() nor sysfs_emit() return negative values. - In powercap_show() and psr_show(), also drop the dead ret < 0 checks. - In ps3_fw_version_show(), normalize the output by adding a terminating newline as suggested by checkpatch. - In vio's modalias_show(), replace the deprecated strcpy() [1] followed by strlen() with sysfs_emit(). Leave validate_show() and the variable-length hv-gpci helpers unchanged since they already have explicit bounds handling, and converting those would be more than a mechanical conversion. powerpc/perf: Use cpumask_intersects api for checking disable path
First online CPU in the node disables the nest counters by making an OPAL call. Any other CPU in that node, will bail out. Instead of using a temporary mask to find out if any cpu in the node is visited or not, it is better to use the cpumask_intersects api to achieve the same. Similarly a temporary cpumask is used to check if a core is already part of core_imc_cpumask. Use the same cpumask_intersects api there. Rename arch_irq_disabled_regs() to regs_irqs_disabled() to align with the naming used in the generic irqentry framework. powerpc/hv-gpci: fix preempt count leak in sysfs show paths
Four sysfs show() callbacks in hv-gpci take get_cpu_var(hv_gpci_reqb) (which calls preempt_disable()) but only call the matching put_cpu_var() on the error path under the 'out:' label. Every successful read leaks one preempt_disable(): processor_bus_topology_show() processor_config_show() affinity_domain_via_virtual_processor_show() affinity_domain_via_domain_show() (affinity_domain_via_partition_show() was already correct.) On a CONFIG_PREEMPT=y kernel, repeated reads raise preempt_count and eventually return to userspace with preemption still disabled. The next user-mode page fault then hits faulthandler_disabled() == 1, gets forced to SIGSEGV, and the resulting coredump trips 'BUG: scheduling while atomic' in call_usermodehelper_exec -> wait_for_completion_state -> schedule: BUG: scheduling while atomic: <task>/<pid>/0x00000004 ... __schedule_bug+0x6c/0x90 __schedule+0x58c/0x13a0 schedule+0x48/0x1a0 schedule_timeout+0x104/0x170 wait_for_completion_state+0x16c/0x330 call_usermodehelper_exec+0x254/0x2d0 vfs_coredump+0x1050/0x2590 get_signal+0xb9c/0xc80 do_notify_resume+0xf8/0x470 Add an out_success label that calls put_cpu_var() before returning the byte count, mirroring affinity_domain_via_partition_show(). powerpc/perf: Update check for PERF_SAMPLE_DATA_SRC marked events
The core-book3s PMU sampling code validates the SIER TYPE field
when PERF_SAMPLE_DATA_SRC is requested. The SIER TYPE field
indicates the instruction type and is only valid for
random sampling (marked events). To handle cases observed where
SIER TYPE could be zero even for marked events,validation was
added to drop such samples and increment event->lost_samples.
However, this validation was applied to all samples,
including continuous sampling. In continuous sampling mode,
the PMU does not set the SIER TYPE field, so it remains zero.
As a result, valid continuous samples were incorrectly
treated as invalid and dropped. Fixed this by gating the
SIER TYPE validation with mark_event, so the check runs only
for marked (random) events. Continuous samples now skip this
check and are recorded normally in the final data recording path.

Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL arguments
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org> |

powerpc/perf/vpa-dtl: Handle the writing of perf record when aux wake up is needed
Handle the case when the aux buffer is going to be full and data needs to be written to the data file. perf_aux_output_begin() function checks if there is enough space depending on the values of aux_wakeup and aux_watermark which is part of "struct perf_buffer". Inorder to maintain where to write to aux buffer, add two fields to "struct vpa_pmu_buf". Field "threshold" to indicate total possible DTL entries that can be contained in aux buffer and field "full" to indicate anytime when buffer is full. In perf_aux_output_end, there is check to see if wake up is needed based on aux head value. In vpa_dtl_capture_aux(), check if there is enough space to contain the DTL data. If not, save the data for available memory and set full to true. Set head of private aux to zero when buffer is full so that next data will be copied to beginning of the buffer. The address used for copying to aux is "aux_copy_buf + buf->head". So once buffer is full, set head to zero, so that next time it will be written from start of the buffer. powerpc/perf/vpa-dtl: Add support to capture DTL data in aux buffer
vpa dtl pmu has one hrtimer added per vpa-dtl pmu thread. When the hrtimer expires, in the timer handler, code is added to save the DTL data to perf event record via vpa_dtl_capture_aux() function. The DTL (Dispatch Trace Log) contains information about dispatch/preempt, enqueue time etc. We directly copy the DTL buffer data as part of auxiliary buffer. Data will be written to disk only when the allocated buffer is full. By this approach, all the DTL data will be present as-is in the perf.data. The data will be post-processed in perf tools side when doing perf report/perf script and this will avoid time taken to create samples in the kernel space. To corelate each DTL entry with other events across CPU's, we need to map timebase from "struct dtl_entry" which phyp provides with boot timebase. This also needs timebase frequency. Define "struct boottb_freq" to save these details. Added changes to capture the Dispatch Trace Log details to AUX buffer in vpa_dtl_dump_sample_data(). Boot timebase and frequency needs to be saved only at once, added field to indicate this as part of "vpa_pmu_buf" structure. perf_aux_output_begin: This function is called before writing to AUX area. This returns the pointer to aux area private structure, ie "struct vpa_pmu_buf". The function obtains the output handle (used in perf_aux_output_end). when capture completes in vpa_dtl_capture_aux(), call perf_aux_output_end() to commit the recorded data. perf_aux_output_end() is called to move the aux->head of "struct perf_buffer" to indicate size of data in aux buffer. aux_tail will be moved in perf tools side when writing the data from aux buffer to perf.data file in disk. It is responsiblity of PMU driver to make sure data is copied between perf_aux_output_begin and perf_aux_output_end. powerpc/perf/vpa-dtl: Add support to setup and free aux buffer for capturing DTL data
vpa dtl pmu has one hrtimer added per vpa-dtl pmu thread. When the hrtimer expires, in the timer handler, code is added to save the DTL data to perf event record. DTL (Dispatch Trace Log) contains information about dispatch/preempt, enqueue time etc. We directly copy the DTL buffer data as part of auxiliary buffer and it will be postprocessed later. To enable the support for aux buffer, add the PMU callbacks for setup_aux and free_aux. In setup_aux, set up pmu-private data structures for an AUX area. rb_alloc_aux uses "alloc_pages_node" and returns pointer to each page address. Map these pages to contiguous space using vmap and use that as base address. The aux private data structure ie, "struct vpa_pmu_buf" mainly saves: 1. buf->base: aux buffer base address 2. buf->head: offset from base address where data will be written to. 3. buf->size: Size of allocated memory free_aux will free pmu-private AUX data structures. powerpc/vpa_dtl: Add interface to expose vpa dtl counters via perf
The pseries Shared Processor Logical Partition(SPLPAR) machines can retrieve a log of dispatch and preempt events from the hypervisor using data from Disptach Trace Log(DTL) buffer. With this information, user can retrieve when and why each dispatch & preempt has occurred. Added an interface to expose the Virtual Processor Area(VPA) DTL counters via perf. The following events are available and exposed in sysfs: vpa_dtl/dtl_cede/ - Trace voluntary (OS initiated) virtual processor waits vpa_dtl/dtl_preempt/ - Trace time slice preempts vpa_dtl/dtl_fault/ - Trace virtual partition memory page faults. vpa_dtl/dtl_all/ - Trace all (dtl_cede/dtl_preempt/dtl_fault) Added interface defines supported event list, config fields for the event attributes and their corresponding bit values which are exported via sysfs. User could use the standard perf tool to access perf events exposed via vpa-dtl pmu. The VPA DTL PMU counters do not interrupt on overflow or generate any PMI interrupts. Therefore, the kernel needs to poll the counters, added hrtimer code to do that. The timer interval can be provided by user via sample_period field in nano seconds. There is one hrtimer added per vpa-dtl pmu thread. To ensure there are no other conflicting dtl users (example: debugfs dtl or /proc/powerpc/vcpudispatch_stats), interface added code to use "down_write_trylock" call to take the dtl_access_lock. The dtl_access_lock is defined in dtl.h file. Also added global reference count variable called "dtl_global_refc", to ensure dtl data can be captured per-cpu. Code also added global lock called "dtl_global_lock" to avoid race condition. powerpc/perf: Remove driver-specific throttle support
The throttle support has been added in the generic code. Remove the driver-specific throttle support. Besides the throttle, perf_event_overflow may return true because of event_limit. It already does an inatomic event disable. The pmu->stop is not required either. powerpc/kvm-hv-pmu: Add perf-events for Hostwide counters
Update 'kvm-hv-pmu.c' to add five new perf-events mapped to the five
Hostwide counters. Since these newly introduced perf events are at system
wide scope and can be read from any L1-Lpar CPU, 'kvmppc_pmu' scope and
capabilities are updated appropriately.
Also introduce two new helpers. First is kvmppc_update_l0_stats() that uses
the infrastructure introduced in previous patches to issues the
H_GUEST_GET_STATE hcall L0-PowerVM to fetch guest-state-buffer holding the
latest values of these counters which is then parsed and 'l0_stats'
variable updated.
Second helper is kvmppc_pmu_event_update() which is called from
'kvmppv_pmu' callbacks and uses kvmppc_update_l0_stats() to update
'l0_stats' and the update the 'struct perf_event's event-counter.
Some minor updates to kvmppc_pmu_{add, del, read}() to remove some debug
scaffolding code.

powerpc/kvm-hv-pmu: Implement GSB message-ops for hostwide counters
Implement and setup necessary structures to send a prepolulated Guest-State-Buffer(GSB) requesting hostwide counters to L0-PowerVM and have the returned GSB holding the values of these counters parsed. This is done via existing GSB implementation and with the newly added support of Hostwide elements in GSB. The request to L0-PowerVM to return Hostwide counters is done using a pre-allocated GSB named 'gsb_l0_stats'. To be able to populate this GSB with the needed Guest-State-Elements (GSIDs) a instance of 'struct kvmppc_gs_msg' named 'gsm_l0_stats' is introduced. The 'gsm_l0_stats' is tied to an instance of 'struct kvmppc_gs_msg_ops' named 'gsb_ops_l0_stats' which holds various callbacks to be compute the size ( hostwide_get_size() ), populate the GSB ( hostwide_fill_info() ) and refresh ( hostwide_refresh_info() ) the contents of 'l0_stats' that holds the Hostwide counters returned from L0-PowerVM. To protect these structures from simultaneous access a spinlock 'lock_l0_stats' has been introduced. The allocation and initialization of the above structures is done in newly introduced kvmppc_init_hostwide() and similarly the cleanup is performed in newly introduced kvmppc_cleanup_hostwide(). kvm powerpc/book3s-apiv2: Introduce kvm-hv specific PMU
Introduce a new PMU named 'kvm-hv' inside a new module named 'kvm-hv-pmu' to report Book3s kvm-hv specific performance counters. This will expose KVM-HV specific performance attributes to user-space via kernel's PMU infrastructure and would enableusers to monitor active kvm-hv based guests. The patch creates necessary scaffolding to for the new PMU callbacks and introduces the new kernel module name 'kvm-hv-pmu' which is built with CONFIG_KVM_BOOK3S_HV_PMU. perf/arch: Record sample last_period before updating on the x86 and PowerPC platforms
This change alters the PowerPC and x86 driver implementations to record the last sample period before the event is updated for the next period. A common pattern in PMU driver implementations is to have a "*_event_set_period" function which takes care of updating the various period-related fields in a perf_event structure. In most cases, the drivers choose to call this function after initializing a sample data structure with perf_sample_data_init. The x86 and PowerPC drivers deviate from this, choosing to update the period before initializing the sample data. When using an event with an alternate sample period, this causes an incorrect period to be written to the sample data that gets reported to userspace. Driver core updates for 6.15-rc1
Here is the big set of driver core updates for 6.15-rc1. Lots of stuff
happened this development cycle, including:
- kernfs scaling changes to make it even faster thanks to rcu
- bin_attribute constify work in many subsystems
- faux bus minor tweaks for the rust bindings
- rust binding updates for driver core, pci, and platform busses,
making more functionaliy available to rust drivers. These are all
due to people actually trying to use the bindings that were in 6.14.
- make Rafael and Danilo full co-maintainers of the driver core
codebase
- other minor fixes and updates.
This has been in linux-next for a while now, with the only reported
issue being some merge conflicts with the rust tree. Depending on which
tree you pull first, you will have conflicts in one of them. The merge
resolution has been in linux-next as an example of what to do, or can be

arch/powerpc/perf: Update get_mem_data_src function to use saved values of sier and mmcra regs
During performance monitor interrupt handling, the regs are setup using perf_read_regs function. Here some of the pt_regs fields is overloaded. Samples Instruction Event Register (SIER) is loaded into pt_regs, overloading regs->dar. And regs->dsisr to store MMCRA (Monitor Mode Control Register A) so that we only need to read these once on each interrupt. Update the isa207_get_mem_data_src function to use regs->dar instead of reading from SPRN_SIER again. from tools/perf/util/sort.c
static int hist_entry__lvl_snprintf(struct hist_entry *he, char *bf,
size_t size, unsigned int width)
{
char out[64];
perf_mem__lvl_scnprintf(out, sizeof(out), he->mem_info);
return repsep_snprintf(bf, size, "%-*s", width, out);
}
The value of "out" is filled from perf_mem_data_src value.
Debugging this further showed that for some corner cases, the
value of "data_src" was pointing to wrong value. This resulted
in bigger size of string and causing stack check fail.
The perf mem data source values are captured in the sample via
isa207_get_mem_data_src function. The initial check is to fetch
the type of sampled instruction. If the type of instruction is
not valid (not a load/store instruction), the function returns.

powerpc/perf: Add per-task/process monitoring to vpa_pmu driver
Enhance the vpa_pmu driver with a feature to observe context switch latency event for both per-task (tid) and per-pid (pid) option. Couple of new helper functions are added to hide the abstraction of reading the context switch latency counter from kvm_vcpu_arch struct and these helper functions are defined in the "kvm/book3s_hv.c". "PERF_ATTACH_TASK" flag is used to decide whether to read the counter values from lppaca or kvm_vcpu_arch struct. powerpc/perf: Set cpumode flags using sample address
Currently in some cases, when the sampled instruction address register
latches to a specific address during sampling, the privilege bits
captured in the sampled event register are incorrect.
For example, a snippet from the perf report on a power10 system is:
Overhead Address Command Shared Object Symbol
........ .................. ............ ................. .......................
2.41% 0x7fff9f94a02c null_syscall [unknown] [k] 0x00007fff9f94a02c
2.20% 0x7fff9f94a02c null_syscall libc.so.6 [.] syscall
perf_get_misc_flags() function looks at the privilege bits to return
the corresponding flags to be used for the address symbol and these
privilege bit details are read from the sampled event register. In the
above snippet, address "0x00007fff9f94a02c" is shown as "k" (kernel) due
to the incorrect privilege bits captured in the sampled event register.
To address this case check whether the sampled address is in the kernel
area. Since this is specific to the latest platform, a new pmu flag
is added called "PPMU_P10" and is used to contain the proposed fix.
PPMU_P10_DD1 marked events are also included under PPMU_P10, hence
remove the code specific to PPMU_P10_DD1 marked events.

driver core: Add device_show_string() helper for sysfs attributes
For drivers wishing to expose an unsigned long, int or bool at a static memory location in sysfs, the driver core provides ready-made helpers such as device_show_ulong() to be used as ->show() callback. Some drivers need to expose a string and so far they all provide their own ->show() implementation. arch/powerpc/perf/hv-24x7.c went so far as to create a device_show_string() helper but kept it private. Make it public for reuse by other drivers. The pattern seems to be sufficiently frequent to merit a public helper. Add a DEVICE_STRING_ATTR_RO() macro in line with the existing DEVICE_ULONG_ATTR() and similar macros to ease declaration of string attributes. perf: Add branch stack counters
Currently, the additional information of a branch entry is stored in a u64 space. With more and more information added, the space is running out. For example, the information of occurrences of events will be added for each branch. Two places were suggested to append the counters. https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20230802215814.GH231007@hirez.programming.kicks-ass.net/ One place is right after the flags of each branch entry. It changes the existing struct perf_branch_entry. The later ARCH specific implementation has to be really careful to consistently pick the right struct. The other place is right after the entire struct perf_branch_stack. The disadvantage is that the pointer of the extra space has to be recorded. The common interface perf_sample_save_brstack() has to be updated. The latter is much straightforward, and should be easily understood and maintained. It is implemented in the patch. Add a new branch sample type, PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_COUNTERS, to indicate the event which is recorded in the branch info. The "u64 counters" may store the occurrences of several events. The information regarding the number of events/counters and the width of each counter should be exposed via sysfs as a reference for the perf tool. Define the branch_counter_nr and branch_counter_width ABI here. The support will be implemented later in the Intel-specific patch.
