PowerPC FW introduced HVPIPE RTAS calls such as
ibm,send-hvpipe-msg and ibm,receive-hvpipe-msg for the user space
to exchange information with different sources such as Hardware
Management Consoles (HMC).
HVPIPE_IOC_CREATE_HANDLE is defined to use /dev/papr-hvpipe
interface for ibm,send-hvpipe-msg and ibm,receive-hvpipe-msg
RTAS calls.
Also defined papr_hvpipe_hdr which will added in the payload
that is passed between the kernel and the user space.

Having :doc: references with relative paths doesn't always work,
as it may have troubles when O= is used. Also that's hard to
maintain, and may break if we change the way rst files are
generated from yaml. Better to use instead a reference for
the netlink family.
So, replace them by Sphinx cross-reference tag that are

third one writes "an ioctl with ... parameters". Simplify the table
by adding heading row that indicates macro name and accepted
parameters.

Commit 03c9d1a5a3 ("Documentation: Fix description format for
powerpc RTAS ioctls") fixes Sphinx warning by chopping arch/ path
component of papr-physical-attestation.h to fit existing "Include File"
column. Now that the column has been widened just enough for that
header file, add back its arch/ path component.

The UVC driver provides two metadata types V4L2_META_FMT_UVC, and
V4L2_META_FMT_D4XX. The only difference between the two of them is that
V4L2_META_FMT_UVC only copies PTS, SCR, size and flags, and
V4L2_META_FMT_D4XX copies the whole metadata section.
Now we only enable V4L2_META_FMT_D4XX for the Intel D4xx family of
devices, but it is useful to have the whole metadata payload for any
device where vendors include other metadata, such as the one described by
Microsoft:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/stream/mf-capture-metadata
This patch introduces a new format V4L2_META_FMT_UVC_MSXU_1_5, that is
identical to V4L2_META_FMT_D4XX.
Let the user enable this format with a quirk for now. This way they can
test if their devices provide useful metadata without rebuilding the
kernel. They can later contribute patches to auto-quirk their devices.
We will also work in methods to auto-detect devices compatible with this
new metadata format.

The documentation currently describes the UVC length field as the "length
of the rest of the block", which can be misleading. The driver limits the
data copied to a maximum of 12 bytes.
This change adds a clarifying sentence to the documentation to make this
restriction explicit.

The CMA heap's name in devtmpfs can vary depending on how the heap is
defined. Its name defaults to "reserved", but if a CMA area is defined
in the devicetree, the heap takes on the devicetree node's name, such as
"default-pool" or "linux, cma". To simplify naming, unconditionally name
it "default_cma_region", but keep a legacy node in place backed by the
same underlying allocator for backwards compatibility.

This driver has long outlived it's utility, and it's broken and unloved.
The main use case for this was direct mount with UDF of cd-rw drives
that required 32kb packets. It would collect writes into that size and
write them out in multiples of that. That's not a common use case
anymore, the world has moved on from those kinds of media. To make
matters worse, it's actively breaking setups where it's not even
required or useful.

variable amount of padding in the most significant bits depending on
the bitdepth of the data. Add new V4L2 pixel format codes for the new

Core
----
- Implement the Device Memory TCP transmit path, allowing zero-copy
data transmission on top of TCP from e.g. GPU memory to the wire.
- Move all the IPv6 routing tables management outside the RTNL scope,
under its own lock and RCU. The route control path is now 3x times
faster.
- Convert queue related netlink ops to instance lock, reducing
again the scope of the RTNL lock. This improves the control plane
scalability.
- Refactor the software crc32c implementation, removing unneeded
abstraction layers and improving significantly the related
micro-benchmarks.
- Optimize the GRO engine for UDP-tunneled traffic, for a 10%
performance improvement in related stream tests.
- Cover more per-CPU storage with local nested BH locking; this is a
prep work to remove the current per-CPU lock in local_bh_disable()
on PREMPT_RT.
- Introduce and use nlmsg_payload helper, combining buffer bounds
verification with accessing payload carried by netlink messages.
Netfilter
---------
- Rewrite the procfs conntrack table implementation, improving
considerably the dump performance. A lot of user-space tools
still use this interface.
- Implement support for wildcard netdevice in netdev basechain
and flowtables.
- Integrate conntrack information into nft trace infrastructure.
- Export set count and backend name to userspace, for better
introspection.
BPF
---
- BPF qdisc support: BPF-qdisc can be implemented with BPF struct_ops
programs and can be controlled in similar way to traditional qdiscs
using the "tc qdisc" command.
- Refactor the UDP socket iterator, addressing long standing issues
WRT duplicate hits or missed sockets.
Protocols
---------
- Improve TCP receive buffer auto-tuning and increase the default
upper bound for the receive buffer; overall this improves the single
flow maximum thoughput on 200Gbs link by over 60%.
- Add AFS GSSAPI security class to AF_RXRPC; it provides transport
security for connections to the AFS fileserver and VL server.
- Improve TCP multipath routing, so that the sources address always
matches the nexthop device.
- Introduce SO_PASSRIGHTS for AF_UNIX, to allow disabling SCM_RIGHTS,
and thus preventing DoS caused by passing around problematic FDs.
- Retire DCCP socket. DCCP only receives updates for bugs, and major
distros disable it by default. Its removal allows for better
organisation of TCP fields to reduce the number of cache lines hit
in the fast path.
- Extend TCP drop-reason support to cover PAWS checks.
Driver API
----------
- Reorganize PTP ioctl flag support to require an explicit opt-in for
the drivers, avoiding the problem of drivers not rejecting new
unsupported flags.
- Converted several device drivers to timestamping APIs.
- Introduce per-PHY ethtool dump helpers, improving the support for
dump operations targeting PHYs.
Tests and tooling
-----------------
- Add support for classic netlink in user space C codegen, so that
ynl-c can now read, create and modify links, routes addresses and
qdisc layer configuration.
- Add ynl sub-types for binary attributes, allowing ynl-c to output
known struct instead of raw binary data, clarifying the classic
netlink output.
- Extend MPTCP selftests to improve the code-coverage.
- Add tests for XDP tail adjustment in AF_XDP.
New hardware / drivers
----------------------
- OpenVPN virtual driver: offload OpenVPN data channels processing
to the kernel-space, increasing the data transfer throughput WRT
the user-space implementation.
- Renesas glue driver for the gigabit ethernet RZ/V2H(P) SoC.
- Broadcom asp-v3.0 ethernet driver.
- AMD Renoir ethernet device.

- The most significant change is the replacement of the old kernel-doc
script (a monstrous collection of Perl regexes that predates the Git era)
with a Python reimplementation. That, too, is a horrifying collection of
regexes, but in a much cleaner and more maintainable structure that

The present sbrmi module only support reporting power via hwmon.
However, AMD data center range of processors support various
system management functionality using custom protocols defined in
Advanced Platform Management Link (APML) specification.
Register a miscdevice, which creates a device /dev/sbrmiX with an IOCTL
interface for the user space to invoke the APML Mailbox protocol, which
is already defined in sbrmi_mailbox_xfer().
The APML protocols depend on a set of RMI registers. Having an IOCTL
as a single entry point will help in providing synchronization among
these protocols as multiple transactions on RMI register set may
create race condition.
Support for other protocols will be added in subsequent patches.
APML mailbox protocol returns additional error codes written by
SMU firmware in the out-bound register 0x37. These errors include,
invalid core, message not supported over platform and
others. This additional error codes can be used to provide more
details to user space.
Open-sourced and widely used https://github.com/amd/esmi_oob_library
will continue to provide user-space programmable API.

Introduction paragraph to the ioctl numbers table states that only
ioctls in up to ancient Linux kernel version (v2.6.31) for x86 arch are
listed. This is inaccurate as the table also lists ioctls from non-x86
archs and the kernel is continously developed (currently in v6.x).

Much like device numbers that used to be assigned by LANANA (see commit
ebdf4040c1 ("Documentation: update the devices.txt documentation"),
ioctl numbers list is maintained by general kernel community nowadays
instead of contacting Michael directly as he's long stepped down from
kernel-related activity (his last LKML message was from 2003 [1] and
he's in CREDITS since the beginning of kernel's git history). Also,
patch (including one to update ioctl numbers list) submission now
follows process as described in
Documentation/process/submitting-patches.rst rather than sending
patches directly to Linus as in the distant past.
Update the docs to reflect that.

The RTAS call ibm,physical-attestation is used to retrieve
information about the trusted boot state of the firmware and
hypervisor on the system, and also Trusted Platform Modules (TPM)
data if the system is TCG 2.0 compliant.
This RTAS interface expects the caller to define different command
structs such as RetrieveTPMLog, RetrievePlatformCertificat and etc,
in a work area with a maximum size of 4K bytes and the response
buffer will be returned in the same work area.
The current implementation of this RTAS function is in the user
space but allocation of the work area is restricted with the system
lockdown. So this patch implements this RTAS function in the kernel
and expose to the user space with open/ioctl/read interfaces.
PAPR (2.13+ 21.3 ibm,physical-attestation) defines RTAS function:
- Pass the command struct to obtain the response buffer for the
specific command.
- This RTAS function is sequence RTAS call and has to issue RTAS
call multiple times to get the complete response buffer (max 64K).
The hypervisor expects the first RTAS call with the sequence 1 and
the subsequent calls with the sequence number returned from the
previous calls.
Expose these interfaces to user space with a
/dev/papr-physical-attestation character device using the following
programming model:
int devfd = open("/dev/papr-physical-attestation");
int fd = ioctl(devfd, PAPR_PHY_ATTEST_IOC_HANDLE,
struct papr_phy_attest_io_block);
- The user space defines the command struct and requests the
response for any command.
- Obtain the complete response buffer and returned the buffer as
blob to the command specific FD.
size = read(fd, buf, len);
- Can retrieve the response buffer once or multiple times until the
end of BLOB buffer.

system lockdown

ibm,platform-dump RTAS call in combination with writable mapping
/dev/mem is issued to collect platform dump from the hypervisor
and may need multiple calls to get the complete dump. The current
implementation uses rtas_platform_dump() API provided by librtas
library to issue these RTAS calls. But /dev/mem access by the
user space is prohibited under system lockdown.
The solution should be to restrict access to RTAS function in user
space and provide kernel interfaces to collect dump. This patch
adds papr-platform-dump character driver and expose standard
interfaces such as open / ioctl/ read to user space in ways that
are compatible with lockdown.
PAPR (7.3.3.4.1 ibm,platform-dump) provides a method to obtain
the complete dump:
- Each dump will be identified by ID called dump tag.
- A sequence of RTAS calls have to be issued until retrieve the
complete dump. The hypervisor expects the first RTAS call with
the sequence 0 and the subsequent calls with the sequence
number returned from the previous calls.
- The hypervisor returns "dump complete" status once the complete
dump is retrieved. But expects one more RTAS call from the
partition with the NULL buffer to invalidate dump which means
the dump will be removed in the hypervisor.
- Sequence of calls are allowed with different dump IDs at the
same time but not with the same dump ID.
Expose these interfaces to user space with a /dev/papr-platform-dump
character device using the following programming model:
int devfd = open("/dev/papr-platform-dump", O_RDONLY);
int fd = ioctl(devfd,PAPR_PLATFORM_DUMP_IOC_CREATE_HANDLE, &dump_id)
- Restrict user space to access with the same dump ID.
Typically we do not expect user space requests the dump
again for the same dump ID.
char *buf = malloc(size);
length = read(fd, buf, size);
- size should be minimum 1K based on PAPR and <= 4K based
on RTAS work area size. It will be restrict to RTAS work
area size. Using 4K work area based on the current
implementation in librtas library
- Each read call issue RTAS call to get the data based on
the size requirement and returns bytes returned from the
hypervisor
- If the previous call returns dump complete status, the
next read returns 0 like EOF.
ret = ioctl(PAPR_PLATFORM_DUMP_IOC_INVALIDATE, &dump_id)
- RTAS call with NULL buffer to invalidates the dump.
The read API should use the file descriptor obtained from ioctl
based on dump ID so that gets dump contents for the corresponding
dump ID. Implemented support in librtas (rtas_platform_dump()) for
this new ABI to support system lockdown.

To issue ibm,get-indices, ibm,set-dynamic-indicator and
ibm,get-dynamic-sensor-state in the user space, the RMO buffer is
allocated for the work area which is restricted under system
lockdown. So instead of user space execution, the kernel will
provide /dev/papr-indices interface to execute these RTAS calls.
The user space assigns data in papr_indices_io_block struct
depends on the specific HCALL and passes to the following ioctls:
PAPR_INDICES_IOC_GET: Use for ibm,get-indices. Returns a
get-indices handle fd to read data.
PAPR_DYNAMIC_SENSOR_IOC_GET: Use for ibm,get-dynamic-sensor-state.
Updates the sensor state in

The rtnetlink family names are set to rt-$name within the YAML
but the files are called rt_$name. C codegen assumes that the
generated file name will match the family. The use of dashes
is in line with our general expectation that name properties
in the spec use dashes not underscores (even tho, as Donald
points out most genl families use underscores in the name).
We have 3 un-ideal options to choose from:
- accept the slight inconsistency with old families using _, or
- accept the slight annoyance with all languages having to do s/-/_/
when looking up family ID, or
- accept the inconsistency with all name properties in new YAML spec
being separated with - and just the family name always using _.
Pick option 1 and rename the rtnl spec files.

Two significant new items:
- Allow reporting IOMMU HW events to userspace when the events are clearly
linked to a device. This is linked to the VIOMMU object and is intended to
be used by a VMM to forward HW events to the virtual machine as part of
emulating a vIOMMU. ARM SMMUv3 is the first driver to use this
mechanism. Like the existing fault events the data is delivered through
a simple FD returning event records on read().
- PASID support in VFIO. "Process Address Space ID" is a PCI feature that
allows the device to tag all PCI DMA operations with an ID. The IOMMU
will then use the ID to select a unique translation for those DMAs. This
is part of Intel's vIOMMU support as VT-D HW requires the hypervisor to
manage each PASID entry. The support is generic so any VFIO user could
attach any translation to a PASID, and the support should work on ARM
SMMUv3 as well. AMD requires additional driver work.
Some minor updates, along with fixes:
- Prevent using nested parents with fault's, no driver support today
- Put a single "cookie_type" value in the iommu_domain to indicate what
owns the various opaque owner fields

The "Process Address Space ID" is a PCI feature that allows the
device to tag all PCI DMA operations with an ID. The IOMMU will
then use the ID to select a unique translation for those DMAs. This
is part of Intel's vIOMMU support as VT-D HW requires the
hypervisor to manage each PASID entry.
The support is generic so any VFIO user could attach any
translation to a PASID, and the support should work on ARM SMMUv3
as well. AMD requires additional driver work.
Some minor updates, along with fixes:
- Prevent using nested parents with fault's, no driver support today
- Put a single "cookie_type" value in the iommu_domain to indicate
what owns the various opaque owner fields"

fwctl is a new subsystem intended to bring some common rules and order to
the growing pattern of exposing a secure FW interface directly to
userspace. Unlike existing places like RDMA/DRM/VFIO/uacce that are
exposing a device for datapath operations fwctl is focused on debugging,
configuration and provisioning of the device. It will not have the
necessary features like interrupt delivery to support a datapath.
This concept is similar to the long standing practice in the "HW" RAID
space of having a device specific misc device to manage the RAID
controller FW. fwctl generalizes this notion of a companion debug and
management interface that goes along with a dataplane implemented in an
appropriate subsystem.
There have been three LWN articles written discussing various aspects of
this:
https://lwn.net/Articles/955001/https://lwn.net/Articles/969383/https://lwn.net/Articles/990802/
This pull requests includes three drivers to launch the subsystem:
- CXL provides a vendor scheme for executing commands and a way to learn
the 'command effects' (ie the security properties) of such
commands. The fwctl driver allows access to these mechanism within the
fwctl security model
- mlx5 is family of networking products, the driver supports all current
Mellanox HW still receiving FW feature updates. This includes RDMA
multiprotocol NICs like ConnectX and the Bluefield family of Smart
NICs.
- AMD/Pensando Distributed Services card is a multi protocol Smart NIC
with a multi PCI function design. fwctl works on the management PCI
function following a 'command effects' model similar to CXL.

Provide a set of IOCTLs for creating and managing child partitions when
running as root partition on Hyper-V. The new driver is enabled via
CONFIG_MSHV_ROOT.
A brief overview of the interface:
MSHV_CREATE_PARTITION is the entry point, returning a file descriptor
representing a child partition. IOCTLs on this fd can be used to map
memory, create VPs, etc.
Creating a VP returns another file descriptor representing that VP which
in turn has another set of corresponding IOCTLs for running the VP,
getting/setting state, etc.
MSHV_ROOT_HVCALL is a generic "passthrough" hypercall IOCTL which can be
used for a number of partition or VP hypercalls. This is for hypercalls
that do not affect any state in the kernel driver, such as getting and
setting VP registers and partition properties, translating addresses,
etc. It is "passthrough" because the binary input and output for the
hypercall is only interpreted by the VMM - the kernel driver does
nothing but insert the VP and partition id where necessary (which are
always in the same place), and execute the hypercall.

* Clarify terminology
* Stop mixing the unix(7) and signal(7) aspects in the explanation.
Terminology:
* The *IPC Scope* of a Landlock domain is that Landlock domain and its
nested domains.
* An *operation* (e.g., signaling, connecting to abstract UDS) is said to
be *scoped within a domain* when the flag for that operation was set at
ruleset creation time. This means that for the purpose of this
operation, only processes within the domain's IPC scope are reachable.

mlx5 FW has a built in security context called UID. Each UID has a set of
permissions controlled by the kernel when it is created and every command
is tagged by the kernel with a particular UID. In general commands cannot
reach objects outside of their UID and commands cannot exceed their UID's
permissions. These restrictions are enforced by FW.
This mechanism has long been used in RDMA for the devx interface where
RDMA will sent commands directly to the FW and the UID limitations
restrict those commands to a ib_device/verbs security domain. For instance
commands that would effect other VFs, or global device resources. The
model is suitable for unprivileged userspace to operate the RDMA
functionality.
The UID has been extended with a "tools resources" permission which allows
additional commands and sub-commands that are intended to match with the
scope limitations set in FWCTL. This is an alternative design to the
"command intent log" where the FW does the enforcement rather than having
the FW report the enforcement the kernel should do.
Consistent with the fwctl definitions the "tools resources" security
context is limited to the FWCTL_RPC_CONFIGURATION,
FWCTL_RPC_DEBUG_READ_ONLY, FWCTL_RPC_DEBUG_WRITE, and
FWCTL_RPC_DEBUG_WRITE_FULL security scopes.
Like RDMA devx, each opened fwctl file descriptor will get a unique UID
associated with each file descriptor.
The fwctl driver is kept simple and we reject commands that can create
objects as the UID mechanism relies on the kernel to track and destroy
objects prior to detroying the UID. Filtering into fwctl sub scopes is
done inside the driver with a switch statement. This substantially limits
what is possible to primarily query functions ad a few limited set
operations.
mlx5 already has a robust infrastructure for delivering RPC messages to
fw. Trivially connect fwctl's RPC mechanism to mlx5_cmd_do(). Enforce the
User Context ID in every RPC header accepted from the FD so the FW knows
the security context of the issuing ID.

Each file descriptor gets a chunk of per-FD driver specific context that
allows the driver to attach a device specific struct to. The core code
takes care of the memory lifetime for this structure.
The ioctl dispatch and design is based on what was built for iommufd. The
ioctls have a struct which has a combined in/out behavior with a typical
'zero pad' scheme for future extension and backwards compatibility.
Like iommufd some shared logic does most of the ioctl marshaling and
compatibility work and table dispatches to some function pointers for
each unique ioctl.
This approach has proven to work quite well in the iommufd and rdma
subsystems.
Allocate an ioctl number space for the subsystem.

Until this point, the kernel can use hardware-wrapped keys to do
encryption if userspace provides one -- specifically a key in
ephemerally-wrapped form. However, no generic way has been provided for
userspace to get such a key in the first place.
Getting such a key is a two-step process. First, the key needs to be
imported from a raw key or generated by the hardware, producing a key in
long-term wrapped form. This happens once in the whole lifetime of the
key. Second, the long-term wrapped key needs to be converted into
ephemerally-wrapped form. This happens each time the key is "unlocked".
In Android, these operations are supported in a generic way through
KeyMint, a userspace abstraction layer. However, that method is
Android-specific and can't be used on other Linux systems, may rely on
proprietary libraries, and also misleads people into supporting KeyMint
features like rollback resistance that make sense for other KeyMint keys
but don't make sense for hardware-wrapped inline encryption keys.
Therefore, this patch provides a generic kernel interface for these
operations by introducing new block device ioctls:
- BLKCRYPTOIMPORTKEY: convert a raw key to long-term wrapped form.
- BLKCRYPTOGENERATEKEY: have the hardware generate a new key, then
return it in long-term wrapped form.
- BLKCRYPTOPREPAREKEY: convert a key from long-term wrapped form to
ephemerally-wrapped form.
These ioctls are implemented using new operations in blk_crypto_ll_ops.

Here is the big set of driver core and debugfs updates for 6.14-rc1.
It's coming late in the merge cycle as there are a number of merge
conflicts with your tree now, and I wanted to make sure they were
working properly. To resolve them, look in linux-next, and I will send
the "fixup" patch as a response to the pull request.
Included in here is a bunch of driver core, PCI, OF, and platform rust
bindings (all acked by the different subsystem maintainers), hence the
merge conflict with the rust tree, and some driver core api updates to
mark things as const, which will also require some fixups due to new
stuff coming in through other trees in this merge window.
There are also a bunch of debugfs updates from Al, and there is at least
one user that does have a regression with these, but Al is working on
tracking down the fix for it. In my use (and everyone else's linux-next
use), it does not seem like a big issue at the moment.
Here's a short list of the things in here:
- driver core bindings for PCI, platform, OF, and some i/o functions.
We are almost at the "write a real driver in rust" stage now,
depending on what you want to do.
- misc device rust bindings and a sample driver to show how to use
them
- debugfs cleanups in the fs as well as the users of the fs api for
places where drivers got it wrong or were unnecessarily doing things
in complex ways.
- driver core const work, making more of the api take const * for
different parameters to make the rust bindings easier overall.
- other small fixes and updates
All of these have been in linux-next with all of the aforementioned
merge conflicts, and the one debugfs issue, which looks to be resolved
"soon".

Commit 86b525bed2 ("drivers pps: add PPS generators support") adds a file
entry in MAINTAINERS and a reference in the ioctl-number documentation
referring to the file pps-gen.h, whereas the file added in this commit is
named pps_gen.h.
Adjust the two references to the actual name of the uapi header file.
While at it, put the entry in MAINTAINERS at the right place for
alphabetical ordering.

Sometimes one needs to be able not only to catch PPS signals but to
produce them also. For example, running a distributed simulation,
which requires computers' clock to be synchronized very tightly.
This patch adds PPS generators class in order to have a well-defined
interface for these devices.

The new SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE, SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE, and
their *_LOCKED counterparts are designed to be set by processes setting
up an execution environment, such as a user session, a container, or a
security sandbox. Unlike other securebits, these ones can be set by
unprivileged processes. Like seccomp filters or Landlock domains, the
securebits are inherited across processes.
When SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE is set, programs interpreting code should
control executable resources according to execveat(2) + AT_EXECVE_CHECK
(see previous commit).
When SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE is set, a process should deny
execution of user interactive commands (which excludes executable
regular files).
Being able to configure each of these securebits enables system
administrators or owner of image containers to gradually validate the
related changes and to identify potential issues (e.g. with interpreter
or audit logs).
It should be noted that unlike other security bits, the
SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE and SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE bits are
dedicated to user space willing to restrict itself. Because of that,
they only make sense in the context of a trusted environment (e.g.
sandbox, container, user session, full system) where the process
changing its behavior (according to these bits) and all its parent
processes are trusted. Otherwise, any parent process could just execute
its own malicious code (interpreting a script or not), or even enforce a
seccomp filter to mask these bits.
Such a secure environment can be achieved with an appropriate access
control (e.g. mount's noexec option, file access rights, LSM policy) and
an enlighten ld.so checking that libraries are allowed for execution
e.g., to protect against illegitimate use of LD_PRELOAD.
Ptrace restrictions according to these securebits would not make sense
because of the processes' trust assumption.
Scripts may need some changes to deal with untrusted data (e.g. stdin,
environment variables), but that is outside the scope of the kernel.

related threat model:

Add a new AT_EXECVE_CHECK flag to execveat(2) to check if a file would
be allowed for execution. The main use case is for script interpreters
and dynamic linkers to check execution permission according to the
kernel's security policy. Another use case is to add context to access
logs e.g., which script (instead of interpreter) accessed a file. As
any executable code, scripts could also use this check [1].
This is different from faccessat(2) + X_OK which only checks a subset of
access rights (i.e. inode permission and mount options for regular
files), but not the full context (e.g. all LSM access checks). The main
use case for access(2) is for SUID processes to (partially) check access
on behalf of their caller. The main use case for execveat(2) +
AT_EXECVE_CHECK is to check if a script execution would be allowed,
according to all the different restrictions in place. Because the use
of AT_EXECVE_CHECK follows the exact kernel semantic as for a real
execution, user space gets the same error codes.
An interesting point of using execveat(2) instead of openat2(2) is that
it decouples the check from the enforcement. Indeed, the security check
can be logged (e.g. with audit) without blocking an execution
environment not yet ready to enforce a strict security policy.
LSMs can control or log execution requests with
security_bprm_creds_for_exec(). However, to enforce a consistent and
complete access control (e.g. on binary's dependencies) LSMs should
restrict file executability, or measure executed files, with
security_file_open() by checking file->f_flags & __FMODE_EXEC.
Because AT_EXECVE_CHECK is dedicated to user space interpreters, it
doesn't make sense for the kernel to parse the checked files, look for
interpreters known to the kernel (e.g. ELF, shebang), and return ENOEXEC
if the format is unknown. Because of that, security_bprm_check() is
never called when AT_EXECVE_CHECK is used.
It should be noted that script interpreters cannot directly use
execveat(2) (without this new AT_EXECVE_CHECK flag) because this could
lead to unexpected behaviors e.g., `python script.sh` could lead to Bash
being executed to interpret the script. Unlike the kernel, script
interpreters may just interpret the shebang as a simple comment, which
should not change for backward compatibility reasons.
Because scripts or libraries files might not currently have the
executable permission set, or because we might want specific users to be
allowed to run arbitrary scripts, the following patch provides a dynamic
configuration mechanism with the SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE and
SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE securebits.
This is a redesign of the CLIP OS 4's O_MAYEXEC:
f5cb330d6b/1901_open_mayexec.patch
This patch has been used for more than a decade with customized script
interpreters. Some examples can be found here:

32 IDs should be plenty (at yet, not too greedy) since a lot of sample

Several new features and uAPI for iommufd:
- IOMMU_IOAS_MAP_FILE allows passing in a file descriptor as the backing
memory for an iommu mapping. To date VFIO/iommufd have used VMA's and
pin_user_pages(), this now allows using memfds and memfd_pin_folios().
Notably this creates a pure folio path from the memfd to the iommu page
table where memory is never broken down to PAGE_SIZE.
- IOMMU_IOAS_CHANGE_PROCESS moves the pinned page accounting between two
processes. Combined with the above this allows iommufd to support a VMM
re-start using exec() where something like qemu would exec() a new
version of itself and fd pass the memfds/iommufd/etc to the new
process. The memfd allows DMA access to the memory to continue while
the new process is getting setup, and the CHANGE_PROCESS updates all
the accounting.
- Support for fault reporting to userspace on non-PRI HW, such as ARM
stall-mode embedded devices.
- IOMMU_VIOMMU_ALLOC introduces the concept of a HW/driver backed virtual
iommu. This will be used by VMMs to access hardware features that are
contained with in a VM. The first use is to inform the kernel of the
virtual SID to physical SID mapping when issuing SID based invalidation
on ARM. Further uses will tie HW features that are directly accessed by
the VM, such as invalidation queue assignment and others.
- IOMMU_VDEVICE_ALLOC informs the kernel about the mapping of virtual
device to physical device within a VIOMMU. Minimially this is used to
translate VM issued cache invalidation commands from virtual to physical
device IDs.
- Enhancements to IOMMU_HWPT_INVALIDATE and IOMMU_HWPT_ALLOC to work with
the VIOMMU
- ARM SMMuv3 support for nested translation. Using the VIOMMU and VDEVICE
the driver can model this HW's behavior for nested translation. This
includes a shared branch from Will.

The rkisp1 driver stores ISP configuration parameters in the fixed
rkisp1_params_cfg structure. As the members of the structure are part of
the userspace API, the structure layout is immutable and cannot be
extended further. Introducing new parameters or modifying the existing
ones would change the buffer layout and cause breakages in existing
applications.
The allow for future extensions to the ISP parameters, introduce a new
extensible parameters format, with a new format 4CC. Document usage of
the new format in the rkisp1 admin guide.

If this flag is set, then the reply is expected to consist of
the CEC_MSG_VENDOR_COMMAND_WITH_ID opcode followed by the Vendor ID (as
used in bytes 1-4 of the message), followed by the struct cec_msg reply
field.
Note that this assumes that the byte after the Vendor ID is a
vendor-specific opcode.
This flag makes it easier to wait for replies to vendor commands,
using the same CEC framework support for waiting for regular replies.
Support for this flag is indicated by setting the new
CEC_CAP_REPLY_VENDOR_ID capability.

Here is the "big" set of char/misc and other driver subsystem changes
for 6.11-rc1. Nothing major in here, just loads of new drivers and
updates. Included in here are:

- wait_interruptable_timeout() api cleanups for some drivers
- MODULE_DESCRIPTION() additions for loads of drivers
- parport out-of-bounds fix
- interconnect driver updates and additions
- mhi driver updates and additions
- w1 driver fixes
- binder speedups and fixes
- eeprom driver updates
- coresight driver updates
- counter driver update
