rseq: Add fields and constants for time slice extension
Aside of a Kconfig knob add the following items:
- Two flag bits for the rseq user space ABI, which allow user space to
query the availability and enablement without a syscall.
- A new member to the user space ABI struct rseq, which is going to be
used to communicate request and grant between kernel and user space.
- A rseq state struct to hold the kernel state of this
- Documentation of the new mechanism

media: uapi: HEVC: Add v4l2_ctrl_hevc_ext_sps_[ls]t_rps controls
Some hardware (e.g.: Rockchip's rk3588 hevc decoder) need to fully parse the slice header, which cannot be passed with the current controls. There is also no skip method similar as to what can be found in verisilicon HW. The SPS is therefore extended through these 2 new controls, providing the long and short term reference information from the slice header for HEVC decoding. These now controls are similar as what is passed in the Vulkan Video API with the StdVideoH265ShortTermRefPicSet and StdVideoH265LongTermRefPicsSps structures embedded in the SPS struct. Documentation/x86: Fix PR_SET_SPECULATION_CTRL error codes
If you force-disable mitigations on the kernel cmdline, for SPEC_STORE_BYPASS this ends up with the prctl returning -ENXIO, but contrary to the current docs for the other controls it returns -EPERM. Fix that. Note that this return value should probably be considered a bug. But, making the behaviour consistent with the current docs seems more likely to break existing users than help anyone out in practice, so just "fix" it by specifying it as correct. Since this is getting more wordy and confusing, also be more explicit about "control is not possible" be mentioning the boot configuration, to better distinguish this case conceptually from the FORCE_DISABLE failure mode. - The 18 patch series "Live Update Orchestrator" from Pasha Tatashin is
a major new feature targeted at cloud environments. Quoting the [0/N]:
This series introduces the Live Update Orchestrator, a kernel subsystem
designed to facilitate live kernel updates using a kexec-based reboot.
This capability is critical for cloud environments, allowing hypervisors
to be updated with minimal downtime for running virtual machines. LUO
achieves this by preserving the state of selected resources, such as
memory, devices and their dependencies, across the kernel transition.
As a key feature, this series includes support for preserving memfd file
descriptors, which allows critical in-memory data, such as guest RAM or
any other large memory region, to be maintained in RAM across the kexec
reboot.
Mike Rappaport merits a mention here, for his extensive review and
testing work.
- The 3 patch series "kexec: reorganize kexec and kdump sysfs" from
Sourabh Jain moves the kexec and kdump sysfs entries from /sys/kernel/
to /sys/kernel/kexec/ and adds back-compatibility symlinks which can
hopefully be removed one day.
- The 2 patch series "kho: fixes for vmalloc restoration" from Mike
Rapoport fixes a BUG which was being hit during KHO restoration of
vmalloc() regions.

This has been another busy cycle for documentation, with a lot of
build-system thrashing. That work should slow down from here on out.
- The various scripts and tools for documentation were spread out in
several directories; now they are (almost) all coalesced under
tools/docs/. The holdout is the kernel-doc script, which cannot be
easily moved without some further thought.
- As the amount of Python code increases, we are accumulating modules that
are imported by multiple programs. These modules have been pulled
together under tools/lib/python/ -- at least, for documentation-related
programs. There is other Python code in the tree that might eventually
want to move toward this organization.
- The Perl kernel-doc.pl script has been removed. It is no longer used by
default, and nobody has missed it, least of all anybody who actually had
to look at it.
- The docs build was controlled by a complex mess of makefilese that few
dared to touch. Mauro has moved that logic into a new program
(tools/docs/sphinx-build-wrapper) that, with any luck at all, will be far
easier to understand and maintain.
- The get_feat.pl program, used to access information under
Documentation/features/, has been rewritten in Python, bringing an end to
the use of Perl in the docs subsystem.
- The top-level README file has been reorganized into a more
reader-friendly presentation.
- A lot of Chinese translation additions
- Typo fixes and documentation updates as usual

liveupdate: luo_core: Live Update Orchestrator
Patch series "Live Update Orchestrator", v8. This series introduces the Live Update Orchestrator, a kernel subsystem designed to facilitate live kernel updates using a kexec-based reboot. This capability is critical for cloud environments, allowing hypervisors to be updated with minimal downtime for running virtual machines. LUO achieves this by preserving the state of selected resources, such as memory, devices and their dependencies, across the kernel transition. As a key feature, this series includes support for preserving memfd file descriptors, which allows critical in-memory data, such as guest RAM or any other large memory region, to be maintained in RAM across the kexec reboot. The other series that use LUO, are VFIO [1], IOMMU [2], and PCI [3] preservations. Github repo of this series [4]. The core of LUO is a framework for managing the lifecycle of preserved resources through a userspace-driven interface. Key features include: - Session Management Userspace agent (i.e. luod [5]) creates named sessions, each represented by a file descriptor (via centralized agent that controls /dev/liveupdate). The lifecycle of all preserved resources within a session is tied to this FD, ensuring automatic kernel cleanup if the controlling userspace agent crashes or exits unexpectedly. - File Preservation A handler-based framework allows specific file types (demonstrated here with memfd) to be preserved. Handlers manage the serialization, restoration, and lifecycle of their specific file types. - File-Lifecycle-Bound State A new mechanism for managing shared global state whose lifecycle is tied to the preservation of one or more files. This is crucial for subsystems like IOMMU or HugeTLB, where multiple file descriptors may depend on a single, shared underlying resource that must be preserved only once. - KHO Integration LUO drives the Kexec Handover framework programmatically to pass its serialized metadata to the next kernel. The LUO state is finalized and added to the kexec image just before the reboot is triggered. In the future this step will also be removed once stateless KHO is merged [6]. - Userspace Interface Control is provided via ioctl commands on /dev/liveupdate for creating and retrieving sessions, as well as on session file descriptors for managing individual files. - Testing The series includes a set of selftests, including userspace API validation, kexec-based lifecycle tests for various session and file scenarios, and a new in-kernel test module to validate the FLB logic. Introduce LUO, a mechanism intended to facilitate kernel updates while keeping designated devices operational across the transition (e.g., via kexec). The primary use case is updating hypervisors with minimal disruption to running virtual machines. For userspace side of hypervisor update we have copyless migration. LUO is for updating the kernel. This initial patch lays the groundwork for the LUO subsystem. Further functionality, including the implementation of state transition logic, integration with KHO, and hooks for subsystems and file descriptors, will be added in subsequent patches. Create a character device at /dev/liveupdate. A new uAPI header, <uapi/linux/liveupdate.h>, will define the necessary structures. dma-buf: heaps: cma: Create CMA heap for each CMA reserved region
Aside from the main CMA region, it can be useful to allow userspace to
allocate from the other CMA reserved regions.
Indeed, those regions can have specific properties that can be useful to
a specific us-case.
For example, one of them platform I've been with has ECC enabled on the
entire memory but for a specific region. Using that region to allocate
framebuffers can be particular beneficial because enabling the ECC has a
performance and memory footprint cost.
Thus, exposing these regions as heaps user-space can allocate from and
import wherever needed allows to cover that use-case.
For now, only shared-dma-pools regions with the reusable property (ie,
backed by CMA) are supported, but eventually we'll want to support other
DMA pools types.
Since we collected all the CMA regions created during boot, we can
simply iterate over all of them to create the heaps.
This has a weird interaction with the recent work on the CMA name, in
particular the backward compatibility code created by commit

It has been a relatively busy cycle in docsland, with changes all over:
- Bring the kernel memory-model docs into the Sphinx build in the "literal
include" mode.
- Lots of build-infrastructure work, further cleaning up long-term
kernel-doc technical debt. The sphinx-pre-install tool has been
converted to Python and updated for current systems.
- A new tool to detect when documents have been moved and generate HTML
redirects; this can be used on kernel.org (or any other site hosting the
rendered docs) to avoid breaking links.

Pull documentation updates from Jonathan Corbet:
"It has been a relatively busy cycle in docsland, with changes all
over:
- Bring the kernel memory-model docs into the Sphinx build in the
"literal include" mode.
- Lots of build-infrastructure work, further cleaning up long-term
kernel-doc technical debt. The sphinx-pre-install tool has been
converted to Python and updated for current systems.
- A new tool to detect when documents have been moved and generate
HTML redirects; this can be used on kernel.org (or any other site
hosting the rendered docs) to avoid breaking links.
- Automated processing of the YAML files describing the netlink
protocol.
- A significant update of the maintainer's PGP guide.

Networking changes for 6.18.
Core & protocols
----------------
- Improve drop account scalability on NUMA hosts for RAW and UDP sockets
and the backlog, almost doubling the Pps capacity under DoS.
- Optimize the UDP RX performance under stress, reducing contention,
revisiting the binary layout of the involved data structs and
implementing NUMA-aware locking. This improves UDP RX performance by
an additional 50%, even more under extreme conditions.
- Add support for PSP encryption of TCP connections; this mechanism has
some similarities with IPsec and TLS, but offers superior HW offloads
capabilities.
- Ongoing work to support Accurate ECN for TCP. AccECN allows more than
one congestion notification signal per RTT and is a building block for
Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput (L4S).
- Reorganize the TCP socket binary layout for data locality, reducing
the number of touched cachelines in the fastpath.
- Refactor skb deferral free to better scale on large multi-NUMA hosts,
this improves TCP and UDP RX performances significantly on such HW.
- Increase the default socket memory buffer limits from 256K to 4M to
better fit modern link speeds.
- Improve handling of setups with a large number of nexthop, making dump
operating scaling linearly and avoiding unneeded synchronize_rcu() on
delete.
- Improve bridge handling of VLAN FDB, storing a single entry per bridge
instead of one entry per port; this makes the dump order of magnitude
faster on large switches.
- Restore IP ID correctly for encapsulated packets at GSO segmentation
time, allowing GRO to merge packets in more scenarios.
- Improve netfilter matching performance on large sets.
- Improve MPTCP receive path performance by leveraging recently
introduced core infrastructure (skb deferral free) and adopting recent
TCP autotuning changes.
- Allow bridges to redirect to a backup port when the bridge port is
administratively down.
- Introduce MPTCP 'laminar' endpoint that con be used only once per
connection and simplify common MPTCP setups.
- Add RCU safety to dst->dev, closing a lot of possible races.
- A significant crypto library API for SCTP, MPTCP and IPv6 SR, reducing
code duplication.
- Supports pulling data from an skb frag into the linear area of an XDP
buffer.
Things we sprinkled into general kernel code
--------------------------------------------
- Generate netlink documentation from YAML using an integrated
YAML parser.
Driver API
----------
- Support using IPv6 Flow Label in Rx hash computation and RSS queue
selection.
- Introduce API for fetching the DMA device for a given queue, allowing
TCP zerocopy RX on more H/W setups.
- Make XDP helpers compatible with unreadable memory, allowing more
easily building DevMem-enabled drivers with a unified XDP/skbs
datapath.
- Add a new dedicated ethtool callback enabling drivers to provide the
number of RX rings directly, improving efficiency and clarity in RX
ring queries and RSS configuration.
- Introduce a burst period for the health reporter, allowing better
handling of multiple errors due to the same root cause.
- Support for DPLL phase offset exponential moving average, controlling
the average smoothing factor.

powerpc/pseries: Define papr-hvpipe ioctl
PowerPC FW introduced HVPIPE RTAS calls such as ibm,send-hvpipe-msg and ibm,receive-hvpipe-msg for the user space to exchange information with different sources such as Hardware Management Consoles (HMC). HVPIPE_IOC_CREATE_HANDLE is defined to use /dev/papr-hvpipe interface for ibm,send-hvpipe-msg and ibm,receive-hvpipe-msg RTAS calls. Also defined papr_hvpipe_hdr which will added in the payload that is passed between the kernel and the user space. Also that's hard to maintain, and may break if we change the way rst files are generated from yaml. Better to use instead a reference for the netlink family. So, replace them by Sphinx cross-reference tag that are created by ynl_gen_rst.py. iommufd 6.17 merge window pull
- IOMMU HW now has features to directly assign HW command queues to a
guest VM. In this mode the command queue operates on a limited set of
invalidation commands that are suitable for improving guest invalidation
performance and easy for the HW to virtualize.
This PR brings the generic infrastructure to allow IOMMU drivers to
expose such command queues through the iommufd uAPI, mmap the doorbell
pages, and get the guest physical range for the command queue ring
itself.
- An implementation for the NVIDIA SMMUv3 extension "cmdqv" is built on
the new iommufd command queue features. It works with the existing SMMU
driver support for cmdqv in guest VMs.
- Many precursor cleanups and improvements to support the above cleanly,
changes to the general ioctl and object helpers, driver support for
VDEVICE, and mmap pgoff cookie infrastructure.
- Sequence VDEVICE destruction to always happen before VFIO device
destruction. When using the above type features, and also in future
confidential compute, the internal virtual device representation becomes
linked to HW or CC TSM configuration and objects. If a VFIO device is
removed from iommufd those HW objects should also be cleaned up to
prevent a sort of UAF. This became important now that we have HW backing
the VDEVICE.
- Fix one syzkaller found error related to math overflows during iova
allocation

"This broadly brings the assigned HW command queue support to iommufd.
This feature is used to improve SVA performance in VMs by avoiding
paravirtualization traps during SVA invalidations.

to support future driver backed features.

It has been a relatively busy cycle for docs, especially the build system:
- The Perl kernel-doc script was added to 2.3.52pre1 just after the turn of
the millennium. Over the following 25 years, it accumulated a vast
amount of cruft, all in a language few people want to deal with anymore.
Mauro's Python replacement in 6.16 faithfully reproduced all of the cruft
in the hope of avoiding regressions. Now that we have a more reasonable
code base, though, we can work on cleaning it up; many of the changes
this time around are toward that end.
- A reorganization of the ext4 docs into the usual TOC format.
- Various Chinese translations and updates.
- A new script from Mauro to help with docs-build testing.
- A new document for linked lists
- A sweep through MAINTAINERS fixing broken GitHub git:// repository links.
...and lots of fixes and updates.

media: uvcvideo: Introduce V4L2_META_FMT_UVC_MSXU_1_5
The UVC driver provides two metadata types V4L2_META_FMT_UVC, and V4L2_META_FMT_D4XX. The only difference between the two of them is that V4L2_META_FMT_UVC only copies PTS, SCR, size and flags, and V4L2_META_FMT_D4XX copies the whole metadata section. Now we only enable V4L2_META_FMT_D4XX for the Intel D4xx family of devices, but it is useful to have the whole metadata payload for any device where vendors include other metadata, such as the one described by Microsoft: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/stream/mf-capture-metadata This patch introduces a new format V4L2_META_FMT_UVC_MSXU_1_5, that is identical to V4L2_META_FMT_D4XX. Let the user enable this format with a quirk for now. This way they can test if their devices provide useful metadata without rebuilding the kernel. They can later contribute patches to auto-quirk their devices. We will also work in methods to auto-detect devices compatible with this new metadata format. dma-buf: heaps: Give default CMA heap a fixed name
The CMA heap's name in devtmpfs can vary depending on how the heap is defined. Its name defaults to "reserved", but if a CMA area is defined in the devicetree, the heap takes on the devicetree node's name, such as "default-pool" or "linux, cma". To simplify naming, unconditionally name it "default_cma_region", but keep a legacy node in place backed by the same underlying allocator for backwards compatibility. block: remove pktcdvd driver
This driver has long outlived it's utility, and it's broken and unloved. The main use case for this was direct mount with UDF of cd-rw drives that required 32kb packets. It would collect writes into that size and write them out in multiples of that. That's not a common use case anymore, the world has moved on from those kinds of media. To make matters worse, it's actively breaking setups where it's not even required or useful. Networking changes for 6.16.
Core
----
- Implement the Device Memory TCP transmit path, allowing zero-copy
data transmission on top of TCP from e.g. GPU memory to the wire.
- Move all the IPv6 routing tables management outside the RTNL scope,
under its own lock and RCU. The route control path is now 3x times
faster.
- Convert queue related netlink ops to instance lock, reducing
again the scope of the RTNL lock. This improves the control plane
scalability.
- Refactor the software crc32c implementation, removing unneeded
abstraction layers and improving significantly the related
micro-benchmarks.
- Optimize the GRO engine for UDP-tunneled traffic, for a 10%
performance improvement in related stream tests.
- Cover more per-CPU storage with local nested BH locking; this is a
prep work to remove the current per-CPU lock in local_bh_disable()
on PREMPT_RT.
- Introduce and use nlmsg_payload helper, combining buffer bounds
verification with accessing payload carried by netlink messages.
Netfilter
---------
- Rewrite the procfs conntrack table implementation, improving
considerably the dump performance. A lot of user-space tools
still use this interface.
- Implement support for wildcard netdevice in netdev basechain
and flowtables.
- Integrate conntrack information into nft trace infrastructure.
- Export set count and backend name to userspace, for better
introspection.
BPF
---
- BPF qdisc support: BPF-qdisc can be implemented with BPF struct_ops
programs and can be controlled in similar way to traditional qdiscs
using the "tc qdisc" command.
- Refactor the UDP socket iterator, addressing long standing issues
WRT duplicate hits or missed sockets.
Protocols
---------
- Improve TCP receive buffer auto-tuning and increase the default
upper bound for the receive buffer; overall this improves the single
flow maximum thoughput on 200Gbs link by over 60%.
- Add AFS GSSAPI security class to AF_RXRPC; it provides transport
security for connections to the AFS fileserver and VL server.
- Improve TCP multipath routing, so that the sources address always
matches the nexthop device.
- Introduce SO_PASSRIGHTS for AF_UNIX, to allow disabling SCM_RIGHTS,
and thus preventing DoS caused by passing around problematic FDs.
- Retire DCCP socket. DCCP only receives updates for bugs, and major
distros disable it by default. Its removal allows for better
organisation of TCP fields to reduce the number of cache lines hit
in the fast path.
- Extend TCP drop-reason support to cover PAWS checks.
Driver API
----------
- Reorganize PTP ioctl flag support to require an explicit opt-in for
the drivers, avoiding the problem of drivers not rejecting new
unsupported flags.
- Converted several device drivers to timestamping APIs.
- Introduce per-PHY ethtool dump helpers, improving the support for
dump operations targeting PHYs.
Tests and tooling
-----------------
- Add support for classic netlink in user space C codegen, so that
ynl-c can now read, create and modify links, routes addresses and
qdisc layer configuration.
- Add ynl sub-types for binary attributes, allowing ynl-c to output
known struct instead of raw binary data, clarifying the classic
netlink output.
- Extend MPTCP selftests to improve the code-coverage.
- Add tests for XDP tail adjustment in AF_XDP.
New hardware / drivers
----------------------
- OpenVPN virtual driver: offload OpenVPN data channels processing
to the kernel-space, increasing the data transfer throughput WRT
the user-space implementation.
- Renesas glue driver for the gigabit ethernet RZ/V2H(P) SoC.
- Broadcom asp-v3.0 ethernet driver.
- AMD Renoir ethernet device.
- ReakTek MT9888 2.5G ethernet PHY driver.
- Aeonsemi 10G C45 PHYs driver.

A moderately busy cycle for documentation this time around:
- The most significant change is the replacement of the old kernel-doc
script (a monstrous collection of Perl regexes that predates the Git era)
with a Python reimplementation. That, too, is a horrifying collection of
regexes, but in a much cleaner and more maintainable structure that
integrates far better with the Sphinx build system.
This change has been in linux-next for the full 6.15 cycle; the small
number of problems that turned up have been addressed, seemingly to
everybody's satisfaction. The Perl kernel-doc script remains in tree (as
scripts/kernel-doc.pl) and can be used with a command-line option if need
be. Unless some reason to keep it around materializes, it will probably
go away in 6.17.
Credit goes to Mauro Carvalho Chehab for doing all this work.
- Some RTLA documentation updates
- A handful of Chinese translations
- The usual collection of typo fixes, general updates, etc.

- The most significant change is the replacement of the old
kernel-doc script (a monstrous collection of Perl regexes that
predates the Git era) with a Python reimplementation. That, too, is
a horrifying collection of regexes, but in a much cleaner and more
maintainable structure that integrates far better with the Sphinx
build system.
This change has been in linux-next for the full 6.15 cycle; the
small number of problems that turned up have been addressed,
seemingly to everybody's satisfaction. The Perl kernel-doc script
remains in tree (as scripts/kernel-doc.pl) and can be used with a
command-line option if need be. Unless some reason to keep it
around materializes, it will probably go away in 6.17.
Credit goes to Mauro Carvalho Chehab for doing all this work.
- Some RTLA documentation updates
- A handful of Chinese translations
- The usual collection of typo fixes, general updates, etc"

misc: amd-sbi: Add support for AMD_SBI IOCTL
The present sbrmi module only support reporting power via hwmon. However, AMD data center range of processors support various system management functionality using custom protocols defined in Advanced Platform Management Link (APML) specification. Register a miscdevice, which creates a device /dev/sbrmiX with an IOCTL interface for the user space to invoke the APML Mailbox protocol, which is already defined in sbrmi_mailbox_xfer(). The APML protocols depend on a set of RMI registers. Having an IOCTL as a single entry point will help in providing synchronization among these protocols as multiple transactions on RMI register set may create race condition. Support for other protocols will be added in subsequent patches. APML mailbox protocol returns additional error codes written by SMU firmware in the out-bound register 0x37. These errors include, invalid core, message not supported over platform and others. This additional error codes can be used to provide more details to user space. Open-sourced and widely used https://github.com/amd/esmi_oob_library will continue to provide user-space programmable API. Documentation: ioctl-number: Update table intro
Introduction paragraph to the ioctl numbers table states that only ioctls in up to ancient Linux kernel version (v2.6.31) for x86 arch are listed. This is inaccurate as the table also lists ioctls from non-x86 archs and the kernel is continously developed (currently in v6.x). Update the paragraph accordingly.
