drm/i915: replace use of system_unbound_wq with system_dfl_wq
Currently if a user enqueue a work item using schedule_delayed_work() the
used wq is "system_wq" (per-cpu wq) while queue_delayed_work() use
WORK_CPU_UNBOUND (used when a cpu is not specified). The same applies to
schedule_work() that is using system_wq and queue_work(), that makes use
again of WORK_CPU_UNBOUND.
This lack of consistency cannot be addressed without refactoring the API.
system_unbound_wq should be the default workqueue so as not to enforce
locality constraints for random work whenever it's not required.
This patch continues the effort to refactor worqueue APIs, which has
begun with the change introducing new workqueues:

Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL arguments
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> |

Convert 'alloc_flex' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This is the exact same thing as the 'alloc_obj()' version, only much smaller because there are a lot fewer users of the *alloc_flex() interface. As with alloc_obj() version, this was done entirely with mindless brute force, using the same script, except using 'flex' in the pattern rather than 'objs*'. Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org> |

mm: update shmem_[kernel]_file_*() functions to use vma_flags_t
In order to be able to use only vma_flags_t in vm_area_desc we must adjust shmem file setup functions to operate in terms of vma_flags_t rather than vm_flags_t. This patch makes this change and updates all callers to use the new functions. No functional changes intended. gpu: Move DRM buddy allocator one level up (part one)
Move the DRM buddy allocator one level up so that it can be used by GPU drivers (example, nova-core) that have usecases other than DRM (such as VFIO vGPU support). Modify the API, structures and Kconfigs to use "gpu_buddy" terminology. Adapt the drivers and tests to use the new API. drm/i915/selftests: Keep mock file open during unfaultable migrate with fill
igt_mmap_migrate() tests migration with various parameters.
In one of the cases, where FILL and UNFAULTABLE flags are set,
during first stages of this test, a mock file is opened in
igt_mmap_offset(), which results in allocating GEM objects for
page table structures and scratch in GPU mappable memory.
Then, also in igt_mmap_offset(), the file is closed (fput) and
the cleanup of these objects is scheduled on a delayed worqueue,
which is designed to execute after unspecified amount of time.
Next, the test calls igt_fill_mappable() to fill mappable GPU
memory. At this point, three scenarios are possible
(N = max size of GPU memory for this test in MiB):
1) the objects allocated for the mock file get cleaned up after
crucial part of the test is over, so the memory is full with
the 1 MiB they occupy and N - 1 MiB added by
igt_fill_mappable(), so the migration fails properly;
2) the object cleanup fires before igt_fill_mappable()
completes, so the whole memory is populated with N MiB from
igt_fill_mappable(), so migration fails as well;
3) the object cleanup is performed right after fill is done,
so only N - 1 MiB are in the mappable portion of GPU memory,
allowing the migration to succeed - we'd expect no space
left to perform migration, but an object was able to fit in
the remaining 1 MiB, which caused get_user() to succeed, so
a page fault did not fail.
The test incorrectly assumes that the GPU mappable memory state
is unchanging during the test. Amend this by keeping the mock
file open until migration and page fault checking is complete.

drm/i915/gem: Zero-initialize the eb.vma array in i915_gem_do_execbuffer
Initialize the eb.vma array with values of 0 when the eb structure is first set up. In particular, this sets the eb->vma[i].vma pointers to NULL, simplifying cleanup and getting rid of the bug described below. During the execution of eb_lookup_vmas(), the eb->vma array is successively filled up with struct eb_vma objects. This process includes calling eb_add_vma(), which might fail; however, even in the event of failure, eb->vma[i].vma is set for the currently processed buffer. If eb_add_vma() fails, eb_lookup_vmas() returns with an error, which prompts a call to eb_release_vmas() to clean up the mess. Since eb_lookup_vmas() might fail during processing any (possibly not first) buffer, eb_release_vmas() checks whether a buffer's vma is NULL to know at what point did the lookup function fail. In eb_lookup_vmas(), eb->vma[i].vma is set to NULL if either the helper function eb_lookup_vma() or eb_validate_vma() fails. eb->vma[i+1].vma is set to NULL in case i915_gem_object_userptr_submit_init() fails; the current one needs to be cleaned up by eb_release_vmas() at this point, so the next one is set. If eb_add_vma() fails, neither the current nor the next vma is set to NULL, which is a source of a NULL deref bug described in the issue linked in the Closes tag. When entering eb_lookup_vmas(), the vma pointers are set to the slab poison value, instead of NULL. This doesn't matter for the actual lookup, since it gets overwritten anyway, however the eb_release_vmas() function only recognizes NULL as the stopping value, hence the pointers are being set to NULL as they go in case of intermediate failure. This patch changes the approach to filling them all with NULL at the start instead, rather than handling that manually during failure. drm/i915: Introduce intel_dumb_fb_max_stride()
Wrap intel_plane_fb_max_stride() in intel_dumb_fb_max_stride() for the purposes of dumb fb creation. I want to change intel_plane_fb_max_stride() to take a 'struct drm_format_info' instead of the 'u32 pixel_format' so we need an excplicit format info lookup in the dumb fb path and I don't really want to have that in i915_gem_dumb_create() directly. This makes intel_plane_fb_max_stride() internal to the display code again, and thus we can pass in struct intel_display instead of struct drm_device. drm/i915/frontbuffer: Fix intel_frontbuffer lifetime handling
The current attempted split between xe/i915 vs. display for intel_frontbuffer is a mess: - the i915 rcu leaks through the interface to the display side - the obj->frontbuffer write-side is now protected by a display specific spinlock even though the actual obj->framebuffer pointer lives in a i915 specific structure - the kref is getting poked directly from both sides - i915_active is still on the display side Clean up the mess by moving everything about the frontbuffer lifetime management to the i915/xe side: - the rcu usage is now completely contained in i915 - frontbuffer_lock is moved into i915 - kref is on the i915/xe side (xe needs the refcount as well due to intel_frontbuffer_queue_flush()->intel_frontbuffer_ref()) - the bo (and its refcounting) is no longer on the display side - i915_active is contained in i915 I was pondering whether we could do this in some kind of smaller steps, and perhaps we could, but it would probably have to start with a bunch of reverts (which for sure won't go cleanly anymore). So not convinced it's worth the hassle. drm/i915: include gen 2 in HAS_128_BYTE_Y_TILING()
Gen 2 platforms actually have 128-byte Y-tile, it's just different from the 128-byte Y-tile on i945+. Make the HAS_128_BYTE_Y_TILING() feature check macro and its usage slightly less convoluted by including gen 2 in it. i915_tiling_ok() would strictly not need changing, but separate the if clauses to emphasize gen 2 X-tile also being 128 bytes. drm/i915/frontbuffer: Move bo refcounting intel_frontbuffer_{get,release}()
Currently xe's intel_frontbuffer implementation forgets to
hold a reference on the bo. This makes the entire thing
extremely fragile as the cleanup order now depends on bo
references held by other things
(namely intel_fb_bo_framebuffer_fini()).
Move the bo refcounting to intel_frontbuffer_{get,release}()
so that both i915 and xe do this the same way.
I first tried to fix this by having xe do the refcounting
from its intel_bo_set_frontbuffer() implementation
(which is what i915 does currently), but turns out xe's
drm_gem_object_free() can sleep and thus drm_gem_object_put()
isn't safe to call while we hold fb_tracking.lock.

It is felt that a read-only mode KASAN is suitable for use in production systems rather than debug-only. - The 3 patch series "mm: hugetlb: cleanup hugetlb folio allocation" from Kefeng Wang does some tidying in the hugetlb folio allocation code. - The 12 patch series "mm: establish const-correctness for pointer parameters" from Max Kellermann makes quite a number of the MM API functions more accurate about the constness of their arguments. This was getting in the way of subsystems (in this case CEPH) when they attempt to improving their own const/non-const accuracy. - The 7 patch series "Cleanup free_pages() misuse" from Vishal Moola fixes a number of code sites which were confused over when to use free_pages() vs __free_pages(). - The 3 patch series "Add Rust abstraction for Maple Trees" from Alice Ryhl makes the mapletree code accessible to Rust. Required by nouveau and by its forthcoming successor: the new Rust Nova driver. - The 2 patch series "selftests/mm: split_huge_page_test: split_pte_mapped_thp improvements" from David Hildenbrand adds a fix and some cleanups to the thp selftesting code. - The 14 patch series "mm, swap: introduce swap table as swap cache (phase I)" from Chris Li and Kairui Song is the first step along the path to implementing "swap tables" - a new approach to swap allocation and state tracking which is expected to yield speed and space improvements. This patchset itself yields a 5-20% performance benefit in some situations. - The 3 patch series "Some ptdesc cleanups" from Matthew Wilcox utilizes the new memdesc layer to clean up the ptdesc code a little. - The 3 patch series "Fix va_high_addr_switch.sh test failure" from Chunyu Hu fixes some issues in our 5-level pagetable selftesting code. - The 2 patch series "Minor fixes for memory allocation profiling" from Suren Baghdasaryan addresses a couple of minor issues in relatively new memory allocation profiling feature. - The 3 patch series "Small cleanups" from Matthew Wilcox has a few cleanups in preparation for more memdesc work. - The 2 patch series "mm/damon: add addr_unit for DAMON_LRU_SORT and DAMON_RECLAIM" from Quanmin Yan makes some changes to DAMON in furtherance of supporting arm highmem. - The 2 patch series "selftests/mm: Add -Wunreachable-code and fix warnings" from Muhammad Anjum adds that compiler check to selftests code and fixes the fallout, by removing dead code. - The 10 patch series "Improvements to Victim Process Thawing and OOM Reaper Traversal Order" from zhongjinji makes a number of improvements in the OOM killer: mainly thawing a more appropriate group of victim threads so they can release resources. - The 5 patch series "mm/damon: misc fixups and improvements for 6.18" from SeongJae Park is a bunch of small and unrelated fixups for DAMON. - The 7 patch series "mm/damon: define and use DAMON initialization check function" from SeongJae Park implement reliability and maintainability improvements to a recently-added bug fix. - The 2 patch series "mm/damon/stat: expose auto-tuned intervals and non-idle ages" from SeongJae Park provides additional transparency to userspace clients of the DAMON_STAT information. - The 2 patch series "Expand scope of khugepaged anonymous collapse" from Dev Jain removes some constraints on khubepaged's collapsing of anon VMAs. It also increases the success rate of MADV_COLLAPSE against an anon vma. - The 2 patch series "mm: do not assume file == vma->vm_file in compat_vma_mmap_prepare()" from Lorenzo Stoakes moves us further towards removal of file_operations.mmap(). This patchset concentrates upon clearing up the treatment of stacked filesystems. - The 6 patch series "mm: Improve mlock tracking for large folios" from Kiryl Shutsemau provides some fixes and improvements to mlock's tracking of large folios. /proc/meminfo's "Mlocked" field became more accurate. - The 2 patch series "mm/ksm: Fix incorrect accounting of KSM counters during fork" from Donet Tom fixes several user-visible KSM stats inaccuracies across forks and adds selftest code to verify these counters. - The 2 patch series "mm_slot: fix the usage of mm_slot_entry" from Wei Yang addresses some potential but presently benign issues in KSM's mm_slot handling. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iHUEABYKAB0WIQTTMBEPP41GrTpTJgfdBJ7gKXxAjgUCaN3cywAKCRDdBJ7gKXxA jtaPAQDmIuIu7+XnVUK5V11hsQ/5QtsUeLHV3OsAn4yW5/3dEQD/UddRU08ePN+1 2VRB0EwkLAdfMWW7TfiNZ+yhuoiL/AA= =4mhY -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'mm-stable-2025-10-01-19-00' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton: - "mm, swap: improve cluster scan strategy" from Kairui Song improves performance and reduces the failure rate of swap cluster allocation - "support large align and nid in Rust allocators" from Vitaly Wool permits Rust allocators to set NUMA node and large alignment when perforning slub and vmalloc reallocs - "mm/damon/vaddr: support stat-purpose DAMOS" from Yueyang Pan extend DAMOS_STAT's handling of the DAMON operations sets for virtual address spaces for ops-level DAMOS filters - "execute PROCMAP_QUERY ioctl under per-vma lock" from Suren Baghdasaryan reduces mmap_lock contention during reads of /proc/pid/maps - "mm/mincore: minor clean up for swap cache checking" from Kairui Song performs some cleanup in the swap code - "mm: vm_normal_page*() improvements" from David Hildenbrand provides code cleanup in the pagemap code - "add persistent huge zero folio support" from Pankaj Raghav provides a block layer speedup by optionalls making the huge_zero_pagepersistent, instead of releasing it when its refcount falls to zero - "kho: fixes and cleanups" from Mike Rapoport adds a few touchups to the recently added Kexec Handover feature - "mm: make mm->flags a bitmap and 64-bit on all arches" from Lorenzo Stoakes turns mm_struct.flags into a bitmap. To end the constant struggle with space shortage on 32-bit conflicting with 64-bit's needs - "mm/swapfile.c and swap.h cleanup" from Chris Li cleans up some swap code - "selftests/mm: Fix false positives and skip unsupported tests" from Donet Tom fixes a few things in our selftests code - "prctl: extend PR_SET_THP_DISABLE to only provide THPs when advised" from David Hildenbrand "allows individual processes to opt-out of THP=always into THP=madvise, without affecting other workloads on the system". It's a long story - the [1/N] changelog spells out the considerations - "Add and use memdesc_flags_t" from Matthew Wilcox gets us started on the memdesc project. Please see https://kernelnewbies.org/MatthewWilcox/Memdescs and https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/post/introducing-memdesc - "Tiny optimization for large read operations" from Chi Zhiling improves the efficiency of the pagecache read path - "Better split_huge_page_test result check" from Zi Yan improves our folio splitting selftest code - "test that rmap behaves as expected" from Wei Yang adds some rmap selftests - "remove write_cache_pages()" from Christoph Hellwig removes that function and converts its two remaining callers - "selftests/mm: uffd-stress fixes" from Dev Jain fixes some UFFD selftests issues - "introduce kernel file mapped folios" from Boris Burkov introduces the concept of "kernel file pages". Using these permits btrfs to account its metadata pages to the root cgroup, rather than to the cgroups of random inappropriate tasks - "mm/pageblock: improve readability of some pageblock handling" from Wei Yang provides some readability improvements to the page allocator code - "mm/damon: support ARM32 with LPAE" from SeongJae Park teaches DAMON to understand arm32 highmem - "tools: testing: Use existing atomic.h for vma/maple tests" from Brendan Jackman performs some code cleanups and deduplication under tools/testing/ - "maple_tree: Fix testing for 32bit compiles" from Liam Howlett fixes a couple of 32-bit issues in tools/testing/radix-tree.c - "kasan: unify kasan_enabled() and remove arch-specific implementations" from Sabyrzhan Tasbolatov moves KASAN arch-specific initialization code into a common arch-neutral implementation - "mm: remove zpool" from Johannes Weiner removes zspool - an indirection layer which now only redirects to a single thing (zsmalloc) - "mm: task_stack: Stack handling cleanups" from Pasha Tatashin makes a couple of cleanups in the fork code - "mm: remove nth_page()" from David Hildenbrand makes rather a lot of adjustments at various nth_page() callsites, eventually permitting the removal of that undesirable helper function - "introduce kasan.write_only option in hw-tags" from Yeoreum Yun creates a KASAN read-only mode for ARM, using that architecture's memory tagging feature. It is felt that a read-only mode KASAN is suitable for use in production systems rather than debug-only - "mm: hugetlb: cleanup hugetlb folio allocation" from Kefeng Wang does some tidying in the hugetlb folio allocation code - "mm: establish const-correctness for pointer parameters" from Max Kellermann makes quite a number of the MM API functions more accurate about the constness of their arguments. This was getting in the way of subsystems (in this case CEPH) when they attempt to improving their own const/non-const accuracy - "Cleanup free_pages() misuse" from Vishal Moola fixes a number of code sites which were confused over when to use free_pages() vs __free_pages() - "Add Rust abstraction for Maple Trees" from Alice Ryhl makes the mapletree code accessible to Rust. drm/i915/gem: Clean-up outdated struct_mutex comments
The struct_mutex will be removed from the DRM subsystem, as it was a legacy BKL that was only used by i915 driver. After review, it was concluded that its usage was no longer necessary This patch updates various comments in the i915/gem and i915/gt codebase to either remove or clarify references to struct_mutex, in order to prevent future misunderstandings. * i915_gem_execbuffer.c: Replace reference to struct_mutex with vm->mutex, as noted in the eb_reserve() function, which states that vm->mutex handles deadlocks. * i915_gem_object.c: Change struct_mutex by drm_i915_gem_object->vma.lock. i915_gem_object_unbind() in i915_gem.c states that this lock is who actually protects the unbind. * i915_gem_shrinker.c: The correct lock is actually i915->mm.obj, as already documented in its declaration. * i915_gem_wait.c: The existing comment already mentioned that struct_mutex was no longer necessary. Updated to refer to a generic global lock instead. * intel_reset_types.h: Cleaned up the comment text. Updated to refer to a generic global lock instead. Summary of significant series in this pull request:
- The 4 patch series "mm: ksm: prevent KSM from breaking merging of new
VMAs" from Lorenzo Stoakes addresses an issue with KSM's
PR_SET_MEMORY_MERGE mode: newly mapped VMAs were not eligible for
merging with existing adjacent VMAs.
- The 4 patch series "mm/damon: introduce DAMON_STAT for simple and
practical access monitoring" from SeongJae Park adds a new kernel module
which simplifies the setup and usage of DAMON in production
environments.
- The 6 patch series "stop passing a writeback_control to swap/shmem
writeout" from Christoph Hellwig is a cleanup to the writeback code
which removes a couple of pointers from struct writeback_control.
- The 7 patch series "drivers/base/node.c: optimization and cleanups"
from Donet Tom contains largely uncorrelated cleanups to the NUMA node
setup and management code.

Brown provides some cleanups and consistency improvements to the
selftests code.
- The 4 patch series "Optimize mremap() for large folios" from Dev Jain
does that. A 37% reduction in execution time was measured in a
memset+mremap+munmap microbenchmark.
- The 5 patch series "Remove zero_user()" from Matthew Wilcox expunges
zero_user() in favor of the more modern memzero_page().
- The 3 patch series "mm/huge_memory: vmf_insert_folio_*() and
vmf_insert_pfn_pud() fixes" from David Hildenbrand addresses some warts
which David noticed in the huge page code. These were not known to be
causing any issues at this time.
- The 3 patch series "mm/damon: use alloc_migrate_target() for
DAMOS_MIGRATE_{HOT,COLD" from SeongJae Park provides some cleanup and
consolidation work in DAMON.

Previously these were lumped under the more general memory on/offline
notifier.
- The 6 patch series "Make MIGRATE_ISOLATE a standalone bit" from Zi Yan
cleans up the pageblock isolation code and fixes a potential issue which
doesn't seem to cause any problems in practice.
- The 5 patch series "selftests/damon: add python and drgn based DAMON
sysfs functionality tests" from SeongJae Park adds additional drgn- and
python-based DAMON selftests which are more comprehensive than the
existing selftest suite.

Hildenbrand cleans up the large folio PTE batching code.
- The 13 patch series "mm/damon/vaddr: Allow interleaving in
migrate_{hot,cold} actions" from SeongJae Park facilitates dynamic
alteration of DAMON's inter-node allocation policy.
- The 3 patch series "Remove unmap_and_put_page()" from Vishal Moola
provides a couple of page->folio conversions.
- The 4 patch series "mm: per-node proactive reclaim" from Davidlohr
Bueso implements a per-node control of proactive reclaim - beyond the
current memcg-based implementation.
- The 14 patch series "mm/damon: remove damon_callback" from SeongJae
Park replaces the damon_callback interface with a more general and
powerful damon_call()+damos_walk() interface.
- The 10 patch series "mm/mremap: permit mremap() move of multiple VMAs"
from Lorenzo Stoakes implements a number of mremap cleanups (of course)
in preparation for adding new mremap() functionality: newly permit the
remapping of multiple VMAs when the user is specifying MREMAP_FIXED. It
still excludes some specialized situations where this cannot be
performed reliably.

without tripping over the races inherent in operating on the live
pageframe directly.
- The 6 patch series "use per-vma locks for /proc/pid/maps reads" from
Suren Baghdasaryan addresses the large contention issues which can be
triggered by reads from that procfs file. Latencies are reduced by more

Pull misc VFS updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains the usual selections of misc updates for this cycle.
Features:
- Add ext4 IOCB_DONTCACHE support
This refactors the address_space_operations write_begin() and
write_end() callbacks to take const struct kiocb * as their first
argument, allowing IOCB flags such as IOCB_DONTCACHE to propagate
to the filesystem's buffered I/O path.
Ext4 is updated to implement handling of the IOCB_DONTCACHE flag
and advertises support via the FOP_DONTCACHE file operation flag.
Additionally, the i915 driver's shmem write paths are updated to
bypass the legacy write_begin/write_end interface in favor of
directly calling write_iter() with a constructed synchronous kiocb.
Another i915 change replaces a manual write loop with
kernel_write() during GEM shmem object creation.
Cleanups:
- don't duplicate vfs_open() in kernel_file_open()
- proc_fd_getattr(): don't bother with S_ISDIR() check
- fs/ecryptfs: replace snprintf with sysfs_emit in show function
- vfs: Remove unnecessary list_for_each_entry_safe() from
evict_inodes()
- filelock: add new locks_wake_up_waiter() helper
- fs: Remove three arguments from block_write_end()
- VFS: change old_dir and new_dir in struct renamedata to dentrys
- netfs: Remove unused declaration netfs_queue_write_request()
Fixes:
- eventpoll: Fix semi-unbounded recursion
- eventpoll: fix sphinx documentation build warning
- fs/read_write: Fix spelling typo
- fs: annotate data race between poll_schedule_timeout() and
pollwake()
- fs/pipe: set FMODE_NOWAIT in create_pipe_files()
- docs/vfs: update references to i_mutex to i_rwsem
- fs/buffer: remove comment about hard sectorsize
- fs/buffer: remove the min and max limit checks in __getblk_slow()
- fs/libfs: don't assume blocksize <= PAGE_SIZE in
generic_check_addressable
- fs_context: fix parameter name in infofc() macro
- fs: Prevent file descriptor table allocations exceeding INT_MAX"

drm/i915: Refactor shmem_pwrite() to use kiocb and write_iter
Refactors shmem_pwrite() to replace the ->write_begin/end logic with a write_iter-based implementation using kiocb and iov_iter. While kernel_write() was considered, it caused about 50% performance regression. vfs_write() is not exported for kernel use. Therefore, file->f_op->write_iter() is called directly with a synchronously initialized kiocb to preserve performance and remove write_begin usage. Performance results use gem_pwrite on Intel CPU i7-10700 (average of 10 runs): - ./gem_pwrite --run-subtest bench -s 16384 Before: 0.205s, After: 0.214s - ./gem_pwrite --run-subtest bench -s 524288 Before: 6.1021s, After: 4.8047s Part of a series refactoring address_space_operations write_begin and write_end callbacks to use struct kiocb for passing write context and flags. sanitize handling of long-term internal mounts
Original rationale for those had been the reduced cost of mntput() for the stuff that is mounted somewhere. Mount refcount increments and decrements are frequent; what's worse, they tend to concentrate on the same instances and cacheline pingpong is quite noticable. As the result, mount refcounts are per-cpu; that allows a very cheap increment. Plain decrement would be just as easy, but decrement-and-test is anything but (we need to add the components up, with exclusion against possible increment-from-zero, etc.). Fortunately, there is a very common case where we can tell that decrement won't be the final one - if the thing we are dropping is currently mounted somewhere. We have an RCU delay between the removal from mount tree and dropping the reference that used to pin it there, so we can just take rcu_read_lock() and check if the victim is mounted somewhere. If it is, we can go ahead and decrement without and further checks - the reference we are dropping is not the last one. If it isn't, we get all the fun with locking, carefully adding up components, etc., but the majority of refcount decrements end up taking the fast path. There is a major exception, though - pipes and sockets. Those live on the internal filesystems that are not going to be mounted anywhere. They are not going to be _un_mounted, of course, so having to take the slow path every time a pipe or socket gets closed is really obnoxious. Solution had been to mark them as long-lived ones - essentially faking "they are mounted somewhere" indicator. With minor modification that works even for ones that do eventually get dropped - all it takes is making sure we have an RCU delay between clearing the "mounted somewhere" indicator and dropping the reference. There are some additional twists (if you want to drop a dozen of such internal mounts, you'd be better off with clearing the indicator on all of them, doing an RCU delay once, then dropping the references), but in the basic form it had been * use kern_mount() if you want your internal mount to be a long-term one. * use kern_unmount() to undo that. Unfortunately, the things did rot a bit during the mount API reshuffling. In several cases we have lost the "fake the indicator" part; kern_unmount() on the unmount side remained (it doesn't warn if you use it on a mount without the indicator), but all benefits regaring mntput() cost had been lost. To get rid of that bitrot, let's add a new helper that would work with fs_context-based API: fc_mount_longterm(). It's a counterpart of fc_mount() that does, on success, mark its result as long-term. It must be paired with kern_unmount() or equivalents. Converted: 1) mqueue (it used to use kern_mount_data() and the umount side is still as it used to be) 2) hugetlbfs (used to use kern_mount_data(), internal mount is never unmounted in this one) 3) i915 gemfs (used to be kern_mount() + manual remount to set options, still uses kern_unmount() on umount side) 4) v3d gemfs (copied from i915) Reviewed-by: Christian Brauner <brauner@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> |

drm/i915/display: Add drm_panic support for Y-tiling with DPT
On Alder Lake and later, it's not possible to disable tiling when DPT is enabled. So this commit implements Y-Tiling support, to still be able to draw the panic screen. mm: rename call_mmap/mmap_prepare to vfs_mmap/mmap_prepare
The call_mmap() function violates the existing convention in include/linux/fs.h whereby invocations of virtual file system hooks is performed by functions prefixed with vfs_xxx(). Correct this by renaming call_mmap() to vfs_mmap(). This also avoids confusion as to the fact that f_op->mmap_prepare may be invoked here. Also rename __call_mmap_prepare() function to vfs_mmap_prepare() and adjust to accept a file parameter, this is useful later for nested file systems. Finally, fix up the VMA userland tests and ensure the mmap_prepare -> mmap shim is implemented there. The other big NVIDIA related one is nouveau adds support for Hopper/Blackwell GPUs, this required a new GSP firmware update to 570.144, and a bunch of rework in order to support multiple fw interfaces. drm/i915: stop including display/intel_display_{core, limits}.h from i915_drv.h
Make i915->display pointer opaque to most of core i915 driver. Lots of places now need explicit include of intel_display_core.h, or a more specific header. With this dependency broken, changes in display should cause radically less recompilation of i915. drm/{i915,xe}: convert i915 and xe display members into pointers
As the first step towards making struct intel_display an opaque pointer
in i915 and xe drivers, convert the struct drm_i915_private and struct
xe_device display members into pointers.
Initially, add temporary struct intel_display __display members, and
point display at it to avoid dynamic allocation. In the future, we can
drop this, and switch to dynamic allocation.
The conversion is done simply with sed:
sed -i 's/&\([a-zA-Z0-9_>.-]*\)\(dev_priv\|i915\|xe\)->display\([^.]\)/\1\2->display\3/g' \
$(git ls-files -- drivers/gpu/drm/i915 drivers/gpu/drm/xe)
sed -i 's/\(dev_priv\|i915\|xe\)->display\./\1->display->/g' \
$(git ls-files -- drivers/gpu/drm/i915 drivers/gpu/drm/xe)
With a couple of manual tweaks on top.
