This is attempt to bring the source code to the state that we discussed
back in 2024, regarding a timeline for deprecating and removing features,
in particular platforms and ABIs that are basically unused and are
also getting in the way of maintenance.
The earlier consensus was to remove these features in 2025 or 2026
after the corresponding LTS kernel release. I would suggest pushing
these to early 2027 now, see the patch description for details on
each one:
- all board files that are still not converted to DT
(except for OMAP1 and S3C)
- iWMMXt FPU support
- ARMv6/ARM1136r0 (not ARMv6K/ARM1136r1/ARM1176) along with the
OMAP24xx and i.MX31 SoCs using it
- Cortex-M3/M4/M7 based microcontroller support
(stm32, imxrt, lpc18xx, samv7)
- LSI Axxia platform
- OABI, OABI-compat and NWFPE are confined to StrongARM based
builds and scheduled for removal once StrongARM is gone.
- DEPRECATED_PARAM_STRUCT, which was originally scheduled for
removal in 2006 (!)
The ARCH_S3C64XX platform was scheduled for removal in 2024, but is
still actively used and will get removed once Mark Brown stops using
it. The OMAP1 platform has some remaining boardfiles and is expected to
get converted to DT.
Big-endian ARMv7 CPU support is not scheduled for removal but marked
as broken the same way as ARM64 has, to reduce the need for testing
unused configurations. This may be removed in the future if arm64 does
it as well. Note that big-endian ARMv5 support is can still be
enabled since the patches to revive little-endianm mode are still
fresh.
Regarding actually removing the code, I would suggest linux-7.4 (January
2027), removing both the board files and any drivers that have either
become newly unused or were missed in a previous machine removal series,
followed by removing support for then unused CPUs a release later.

This CPU revision remains a special case as it is now incompatible
with CONFIG_SMP. Only the Nokia N8x0 is used in practice, and even
that one is fairly rare these days, so let's plan to remove all of
them after the 2026 LTS kernel release.

Support for SMP on ARM1136r0 has been broken for a while, and nobody
is working on fixing it. I had a plan to change ARMv6 support to no
longer coexist in a common kernel with ARMv7 CPUs but instead ARMv5 and
below. This would have addressed the problem, but after a recent mailing
list discussion, we concluded that an easier approach is to just forbid
ARM1136r0 CPU support on SMP-enabled kernels.
This mainly affects users of the Nokia N800/N810 tablets using an
OMAP2420 SoC, which is the only commercial product with an ARM1136r0
that is still supported by the kernel.
The other machines that are still in the same hardware catogory are:
- TI OMAP2420 H4 reference board
- TI OMAP2430 SDP software development platform
- Freescale/NXP i.MX31 Lite Development Kit
- Buglabs i.MX31 Bug 1.x prototype
- Arm Integrator/AP with CM1136JF-S core module
To my knowledge, none of these have any actual users aside from
reference boards being used to more easily test the platforms.
There are also a few ARM1136r1 machines, which implement the
ARMv6K SMP support (barriers, atomics and TLS):
- Eukrea CPUIMX35 reference platform
- Freescale/NXP i.MX35 Product Development Kit
- ARM Integrator/CP/IM-LT3 with ARM1136J Core Tile
- ARM Realview/EB with ARM1136J Core Tile
Again, these are mainly reference implementations rather than
actual products, but since they support ARMv6K, they should
continue to work correctly in SMP-enabled kernels. For the
ARM Core Tile, I have not found a datasheet but instead use
the revision based on what the respective virtual models
report.
All the other ARMv6 platforms use an ARM1176 with ARMv6K,
VMSAv7 and Trustzone support.
To avoid the broken configuration, annotate the ARM1136 based
machines with specific CPU_ARM1136R0 or CPU_ARM1136R2 symbols
in Kconfig and make the r0 variants depend on !SMP.

The OF helpers that return device nodes acquire references that must be
released by the caller.
_init() leaks the "ocp" bus node returned by of_find_node_by_name() on
all paths after lookup, and also leaks the child returned by
of_get_next_child() when parsing module flags. Route the post-lookup
returns through a common cleanup path and release the child after use.
omap_hwmod_setup_earlycon_flags() leaks the /chosen node and the UART
node resolved from stdout-path. Track them separately and drop both
references after use.

With CONFIG_CFI enabled, OMAP4 can trap in omap4_enter_lowpower()

Use a flexible array member (FAM) to combine hwmods array allocation
with the omap_device structure. This reduces the number of allocations
from two separate calls (one for the device, one for the array) to a
single allocation, improving efficiency and reducing memory fragmentation.
The FAM approach also enables bounds checking through __counted_by(),
which provides runtime verification that array accesses stay within
the allocated size. This improves security and helps catch bugs during
development.
Simplify error handling by removing the unnecessary multi-label goto
pattern. The new code is more straightforward: allocate, verify, copy
data, and either return success or error immediately.
Also removes the now-redundant kfree(od->hwmods) in omap_device_delete()
since the hwmods array is now embedded in the structure rather than
separately allocated.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

2. clocks node leak when checking existence
3. Missing scm_conf release before np in error paths

There is an issue possible where TI AM33xx SoCs do not boot properly after
a reset if EMU0/EMU1 pins were used as GPIO and have been driving low level
actively prior to reset [1].
"Advisory 1.0.36 EMU0 and EMU1: Terminals Must be Pulled High Before
ICEPick Samples
The state of the EMU[1:0] terminals are latched during reset to determine
ICEPick boot mode. For normal device operation, these terminals must be
pulled up to a valid high logic level ( > VIH min) before ICEPick samples
the state of these terminals, which occurs
[five CLK_M_OSC clock cycles - 10 ns] after the falling edge of WARMRSTn.
Many applications may not require the secondary GPIO function of the
EMU[1:0] terminals. In this case, they would only be connected to pull-up
resistors, which ensures they are always high when ICEPick samples.
However, some applications may need to use these terminals as GPIO where
they could be driven low before reset is asserted. This usage of the
EMU[1:0] terminals may require special attention to ensure the terminals
are allowed to return to a valid high-logic level before ICEPick samples
the state of these terminals.
When any device reset is asserted, the pin mux mode of EMU[1:0] terminals
configured to operate as GPIO (mode 7) will change back to EMU input
(mode 0) on the falling edge of WARMRSTn. This only provides a short period
of time for the terminals to return high if driven low before reset is
asserted...
If the EMU[1:0] terminals are configured to operate as GPIO, the product
should be designed such these terminals can be pulled to a valid high-logic
level within 190 ns after the falling edge of WARMRSTn."
We've noticed this problem with custom am335x hardware in combination with
recently implemented cold reset method
(commit 6521f6a195 ("ARM: AM33xx: PRM: Implement REBOOT_COLD")).
It looks like the problem can affect other HW, for instance AM335x
Chiliboard, because the latter has LEDs on GPIO3_7/GPIO3_8 as well.
One option would be to check if the pins are in GPIO mode and either switch
to output active high, or switch to input and poll until the external
pull-ups have brought the pins to the desired high state. But fighting
with GPIO driver for these pins is probably not the most straight forward
approch in a reboot handler.
Fortunately we can easily control pinmuxing here and rely on the external
pull-ups. TI recommends 4k7 external pull up resistors [2] and even with
quite conservative estimation for pin capacity (1 uF should never happen)
the required delay shall not exceed 5ms.

"The main update in size is the removal of the TI DaVinci DA830 SoC
support. DA830 is similar to DA850, which remain supported, but only
the reference board was ever supported, and we removed that one 3
years ago as it had never been converted to devicetree.
There are some other cleanups for OMAP4 and a few boards using old
GPIO interfaces"

irq_domain_add_*() interfaces are going away as being obsolete now.
Switch to the preferred irq_domain_create_*() ones. Those differ in the
node parameter: They take more generic struct fwnode_handle instead of
struct device_node. Therefore, of_fwnode_handle() is added around the
original parameter.
Note some of the users can likely use dev->fwnode directly instead of
indirect of_fwnode_handle(dev->of_node). But dev->fwnode is not
guaranteed to be set for all, so this has to be investigated on case to
case basis (by people who can actually test with the HW).

The late init call just writes to omap4 registers as soon as
CONFIG_MFD_CPCAP is enabled without checking whether the
cpcap driver is actually there or the SoC is indeed an
OMAP4.
Rather do these things only with the right device combination.
Fixes booting the BT200 with said configuration enabled and non-factory
X-Loader and probably also some surprising behavior on other devices.

Quite a lot of nilfs2 work this time around.
Notable patch series in this pull request are:
"mul_u64_u64_div_u64: new implementation" by Nicolas Pitre, with
assistance from Uwe Kleine-König. Reimplement mul_u64_u64_div_u64() to
provide (much) more accurate results. The current implementation was
causing Uwe some issues in the PWM drivers.
"xz: Updates to license, filters, and compression options" from Lasse
Collin. Miscellaneous maintenance and kinor feature work to the xz
decompressor.
"Fix some GDB command error and add some GDB commands" from Kuan-Ying Lee.
Fixes and enhancements to the gdb scripts.
"treewide: add missing MODULE_DESCRIPTION() macros" from Jeff Johnson.
Adds lots of MODULE_DESCRIPTIONs, thus fixing lots of warnings about this.
"nilfs2: add support for some common ioctls" from Ryusuke Konishi. Adds
various commonly-available ioctls to nilfs2.
"This series fixes a number of formatting issues in kernel doc comments"
from Ryusuke Konishi does that.
"nilfs2: prevent unexpected ENOENT propagation" from Ryusuke Konishi. Fix
issues where -ENOENT was being unintentionally and inappropriately
returned to userspace.
"nilfs2: assorted cleanups" from Huang Xiaojia.
"nilfs2: fix potential issues with empty b-tree nodes" from Ryusuke
Konishi fixes some issues which can occur on corrupted nilfs2 filesystems.
"scripts/decode_stacktrace.sh: improve error reporting and usability" from
Luca Ceresoli does those things.

kasprintf() returns a pointer to dynamically allocated memory which can
be NULL upon failure. When 'soc_dev_attr->family' is NULL,it'll trigger
the null pointer dereference issue, such as in 'soc_info_show'.
And when 'soc_device_register' fails, it's necessary to release
'soc_dev_attr->family' to avoid memory leaks.

Most of changes at this time are for ASoC, spread over ASoC core and
drivers due to the API prefix standardization. Other than that, there
have little change wrt API, rather lots of driver-specific updates and
fixes. Some highlight below:
ASoC:
- Standardization of API prefix
- GPIO API usage improvements
- Support for HDA patches
- Lots of work on SOF, including crash dump support
- Fixes for noise when stopping some Sounwire CODECs
- Support for AMD platforms with es83xx, AMD ACP 6.3 and 7.0, Awinc
AT87390 and AW88399, many Intel platforms, many Mediatek platforms,
Qualcomm SM6115 and SC7180 platforms, Richtek RTQ9128 and Texas
Instruments TAS575x
HD-audio and USB-audio:
- Deferred probe support of audio component binding
- More fixes and enhancements for Cirrus subcodecs
- USB Scarlett2 mixer and McIntosh DSD quirk
Others:
- More enhancement of snd-aloop driver
- Update MAINTAINERS entry for linux-sound mailing list
