alpha: remove LCA and APECS based machines
APECS is the DECchip 21071x chipset for the EV4 and EV45 generation, while LCA is the integrated I/O support on the corresponding low-cost alpha machines of that generation. All of these CPUs lack the BWX extension for byte and word access, so drop the chipset support and all associated machines. Acked-by: Paul E. alpha: sable: remove early machine support
The sable family (Alphaserver 2000 and 2100) comes in variants for EV4, EV45, EV5 and EV56. Drop support for the earlier ones that lack support for the BWX extension but keep the later 'gamma' variant around since that works with EV56 CPUs. Acked-by: Paul E. alpha: remove DECpc AXP150 (Jensen) support
This is one of the hackiest Alpha machines, and the only one without PCI support. Removing this allows cleaning up code in eise and tty drivers in addition to the architecture code. Acked-by: Paul E. alpha: sort scr_mem{cpy,move}w() out
Take scr_memmove() out of line, make both it and scr_memcpyw() conditional upon VGA_CONSOLE or MDA_CONSOLE (if neither is selected, we are certain to be working with the kernel-allocated buffer rather than VRAM and defaults will work just fine). That allows to clean vt_buffer.h, but that's a separate story Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Acked-by: Paul E. arch: define CONFIG_PAGE_SIZE_*KB on all architectures
Most architectures only support a single hardcoded page size. In order to ensure that each one of these sets the corresponding Kconfig symbols, change over the PAGE_SHIFT definition to the common one and allow only the hardware page size to be selected. Merge branch 'asm-generic-prototypes' into asm-generic
As part of my quest to enable -Wmissing-prototypes by default, these patches clean up some of the prototypes that are needed by all architectures but are handled inconsistently. The duplicate prototypes are moved into common code, which helps both to clean up the existing warnings and simplifies the logic. * asm-generic-prototypes: arm64: vdso32: Define BUILD_VDSO32_64 to correct prototypes csky: fix arch_jump_label_transform_static override arch: add do_page_fault prototypes arch: add missing prepare_ftrace_return() prototypes arch: vdso: consolidate gettime prototypes arch: include linux/cpu.h for trap_init() prototype arch: fix asm-offsets.c building with -Wmissing-prototypes arch: consolidate arch_irq_work_raise prototypes |

arch: add do_page_fault prototypes
do_page_fault() is missing a declaration on a couple of architectures: arch/alpha/mm/fault.c:85:1: error: no previous prototype for 'do_page_fault' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] arch/csky/mm/fault.c:187:17: error: no previous prototype for 'do_page_fault' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] arch/mips/mm/fault.c:323:17: error: no previous prototype for 'do_page_fault' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] arch/nios2/mm/fault.c:43:17: error: no previous prototype for 'do_page_fault' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] arch/sh/mm/fault.c:389:27: error: no previous prototype for 'do_page_fault' [-Werror=missing-prototypes] Since the calling conventions are architecture specific here, add separate prototypes for each one. arch/*/io.h: remove ioremap_uc in some architectures
ioremap_uc() is only meaningful on old x86-32 systems with the PAT extension, and on ia64 with its slightly unconventional ioremap() behavior. So remove the ioremap_uc() definition in architecutures other than x86 and ia64. These architectures all have asm-generic/io.h included and will have the default ioremap_uc() definition which returns NULL. This changes the existing behaviour, while no need to worry about any breakage because in the only callsite of ioremap_uc(), code has been adjusted to eliminate the impact. Please see atyfb_setup_generic() of drivers/video/fbdev/aty/atyfb_base.c. If any new invocation of ioremap_uc() need be added, please consider using ioremap() intead or adding a ARCH specific version if necessary. CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack part of this feature, and just for userspace. The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction, the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy. Merge tag 'pci-v6.6-changes' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pci/pci
Pull PCI updates from Bjorn Helgaas:
"Enumeration:
- Add locking to read/modify/write PCIe Capability Register accessors
for Link Control and Root Control
- Use pci_dev_id() when possible instead of manually composing ID
from dev->bus->number and dev->devfn
Resource management:
- Move prototypes for __weak sysfs resource files to linux/pci.h to
fix 'no previous prototype' warnings
- Make more I/O port accesses depend on HAS_IOPORT
- Use devm_platform_get_and_ioremap_resource() instead of open-coding
platform_get_resource() followed by devm_ioremap_resource()
Power management:
- Ensure devices are powered up while accessing VPD
- If device is powered-up, keep it that way while polling for PME
- Only read PCI_PM_CTRL register when available, to avoid reading the
wrong register and corrupting dev->current_state
Virtualization:
- Avoid Secondary Bus Reset on NVIDIA T4 GPUs
Error handling:
- Remove unused pci_disable_pcie_error_reporting()
- Unexport pci_enable_pcie_error_reporting(), used only by aer.c
- Unexport pcie_port_bus_type, used only by PCI core
VGA:
- Simplify and clean up typos in VGA arbiter
Apple PCIe controller driver:
- Initialize pcie->nvecs (number of available MSIs) before use
Broadcom iProc PCIe controller driver:
- Use of_property_read_bool() instead of low-level accessors for
boolean properties
Broadcom STB PCIe controller driver:
- Assert PERST# when probing BCM2711 because some bootloaders don't
do it
Freescale i.MX6 PCIe controller driver:
- Add .host_deinit() callback so we can clean up things like
regulators on probe failure or driver unload
Freescale Layerscape PCIe controller driver:
- Add support for link-down notification so the endpoint driver can
process LINK_DOWN events
- Add suspend/resume support, including manual
PME_Turn_off/PME_TO_Ack handshake
- Save Link Capabilities during probe so they can be restored when
handling a link-up event, since the controller loses the Link Width
and Link Speed values during reset
Intel VMD host bridge driver:
- Fix disable of bridge windows during domain reset; previously we
cleared the base/limit registers, which actually left the windows
enabled
Marvell MVEBU PCIe controller driver:
- Remove unused busn member
Microchip PolarFlare PCIe controller driver:
- Fix interrupt bit definitions so the SEC and DED interrupt handlers
work correctly
- Make driver buildable as a module
- Read FPGA MSI configuration parameters from hardware instead of
hard-coding them
Microsoft Hyper-V host bridge driver:
- To avoid a NULL pointer dereference, skip MSI restore after
hibernate if MSI/MSI-X hasn't been enabled
NVIDIA Tegra194 PCIe controller driver:
- Revert 'PCI: tegra194: Enable support for 256 Byte payload' because
Linux doesn't know how to reduce MPS from to 256 to 128 bytes for
endpoints below a switch (because other devices below the switch
might already be operating), which leads to 'Malformed TLP' errors
Qualcomm PCIe controller driver:
- Add DT and driver support for interconnect bandwidth voting for
'pcie-mem' and 'cpu-pcie' interconnects
- Fix broken SDX65 'compatible' DT property
- Configure controller so MHI bus master clock will be switched off
while in ASPM L1.x states
- Use alignment restriction from EPF core in EPF MHI driver
- Add Endpoint eDMA support
- Add MHI eDMA support
- Add Snapdragon SM8450 support to the EPF MHI driversupport
- Add MHI eDMA support
- Add Snapdragon SM8450 support to the EPF MHI driversupport
- Add MHI eDMA support
- Add Snapdragon SM8450 support to the EPF MHI driversupport
- Add MHI eDMA support
- Add Snapdragon SM8450 support to the EPF MHI driver
- Use iATU for EPF MHI transfers smaller than 4K to avoid eDMA setup
latency
- Add sa8775p DT binding and driver support
Rockchip PCIe controller driver:
- Use 64-bit mask on MSI 64-bit PCI address to avoid zeroing out the
upper 32 bits
SiFive FU740 PCIe controller driver:
- Set the supported number of MSI vectors so we can use all available
MSI interrupts
Synopsys DesignWare PCIe controller driver:
- Add generic dwc suspend/resume APIs (dw_pcie_suspend_noirq() and
dw_pcie_resume_noirq()) to be called by controller driver
suspend/resume ops, and a controller callback to send PME_Turn_Off
MicroSemi Switchtec management driver:
- Add support for PCIe Gen5 devices
Miscellaneous:
- Reorder and compress to reduce size of struct pci_dev
- Fix race in DOE destroy_work_on_stack()
- Add stubs to avoid casts between incompatible function types
- Explicitly include correct DT includes to untangle headers"

locking: remove spin_lock_prefetch
The only remaining consumer is new_inode, where it showed up in 2001 as
commit c37fa164f793 ("v2.4.9.9 -> v2.4.9.10") in a historical repo [1]
with a changelog which does not mention it.
Since then the line got only touched up to keep compiling.
While it may have been of benefit back in the day, it is guaranteed to
at best not get in the way in the multicore setting -- as the code
performs *a lot* of work between the prefetch and actual lock acquire,
any contention means the cacheline is already invalid by the time the
routine calls spin_lock(). It adds spurious traffic, for short.
On top of it prefetch is notoriously tricky to use for single-threaded
purposes, making it questionable from the get go.
As such, remove it.
I admit upfront I did not see value in benchmarking this change, but I
can do it if that is deemed appropriate.
Removal from new_inode and of the entire thing are in the same patch as
requested by Linus, so whatever weird looks can be directed at that guy.

mm: Rename arch pte_mkwrite()'s to pte_mkwrite_novma()
The x86 Shadow stack feature includes a new type of memory called shadow stack. This shadow stack memory has some unusual properties, which requires some core mm changes to function properly. One of these unusual properties is that shadow stack memory is writable, but only in limited ways. These limits are applied via a specific PTE bit combination. Nevertheless, the memory is writable, and core mm code will need to apply the writable permissions in the typical paths that call pte_mkwrite(). The goal is to make pte_mkwrite() take a VMA, so that the x86 implementation of it can know whether to create regular writable or shadow stack mappings. But there are a couple of challenges to this. Modifying the signatures of each arch pte_mkwrite() implementation would be error prone because some are generated with macros and would need to be re-implemented. Also, some pte_mkwrite() callers operate on kernel memory without a VMA. So this can be done in a three step process. First pte_mkwrite() can be renamed to pte_mkwrite_novma() in each arch, with a generic pte_mkwrite() added that just calls pte_mkwrite_novma(). Next callers without a VMA can be moved to pte_mkwrite_novma(). And lastly, pte_mkwrite() and all callers can be changed to take/pass a VMA. Start the process by renaming pte_mkwrite() to pte_mkwrite_novma() and adding the pte_mkwrite() wrapper in linux/pgtable.h. Apply the same pattern for pmd_mkwrite(). Since not all archs have a pmd_mkwrite_novma(), create a new arch config HAS_HUGE_PAGE that can be used to tell if pmd_mkwrite() should be defined. Otherwise in the !HAS_HUGE_PAGE cases the compiler would not be able to find pmd_mkwrite_novma(). No functional change. Locking changes for v6.5:
- Introduce cmpxchg128() -- aka. the demise of cmpxchg_double().
The cmpxchg128() family of functions is basically & functionally
the same as cmpxchg_double(), but with a saner interface: instead
of a 6-parameter horror that forced u128 - u64/u64-halves layout
details on the interface and exposed users to complexity,
fragility & bugs, use a natural 3-parameter interface with u128 types.
- Restructure the generated atomic headers, and add
kerneldoc comments for all of the generic atomic{,64,_long}_t
operations. Generated definitions are much cleaner now,
and come with documentation.
- Implement lock_set_cmp_fn() on lockdep, for defining an ordering
when taking multiple locks of the same type. This gets rid of
one use of lockdep_set_novalidate_class() in the bcache code.
- Fix raw_cpu_generic_try_cmpxchg() bug due to an unintended
variable shadowing generating garbage code on Clang on certain

locking/atomic: treewide: delete arch_atomic_*() kerneldoc
Currently several architectures have kerneldoc comments for arch_atomic_*(), which is unhelpful as these live in a shared namespace where they clash, and the arch_atomic_*() ops are now an implementation detail of the raw_atomic_*() ops, which no-one should use those directly. Delete the kerneldoc comments for arch_atomic_*(), along with pseudo-kerneldoc comments which are in the correct style but are missing the leading '/**' necessary to be true kerneldoc comments. alpha: lazy FPU switching
On each context switch we save the FPU registers on stack of old process and restore FPU registers from the stack of new one. That allows us to avoid doing that each time we enter/leave the kernel mode; however, that can get suboptimal in some cases. For one thing, we don't need to bother saving anything for kernel threads. For another, if between entering and leaving the kernel a thread gives CPU up more than once, it will do useless work, saving the same values every time, only to discard the saved copy as soon as it returns from switch_to(). Alternative solution: * move the array we save into from switch_stack to thread_info * have a (thread-synchronous) flag set when we save them * have another flag set when they should be restored on return to userland. * do *NOT* save/restore them in do_switch_stack()/undo_switch_stack(). * restore on the exit to user mode if the restore flag had been set. Clear both flags. * on context switch, entry to fork/clone/vfork, before entry into do_signal() and on entry into straced syscall save the registers and set the 'saved' flag unless it had been already set. * on context switch set the 'restore' flag as well. * have copy_thread() set both flags for child, so the registers would be restored once the child returns to userland. * use the saved data in setup_sigcontext(); have restore_sigcontext() set both flags and copy from sigframe to save area. * teach ptrace to look for FPU registers in thread_info instead of switch_stack. * teach isolated accesses to FPU registers (rdfpcr, wrfpcr, etc.) to check the 'saved' flag (under preempt_disable()) and work with the save area if it's been set; if 'saved' flag is found upon write access, set 'restore' flag as well. Driver core changes for 6.3-rc1
Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.3-rc1.
There's a lot of changes this development cycle, most of the work falls
into two different categories:
- fw_devlink fixes and updates. This has gone through numerous review
cycles and lots of review and testing by lots of different devices.
Hopefully all should be good now, and Saravana will be keeping a
watch for any potential regression on odd embedded systems.
- driver core changes to work to make struct bus_type able to be moved
into read-only memory (i.e. const) The recent work with Rust has
pointed out a number of areas in the driver core where we are
passing around and working with structures that really do not have
to be dynamic at all, and they should be able to be read-only making
things safer overall. This is the contuation of that work (started
last release with kobject changes) in moving struct bus_type to be
constant. We didn't quite make it for this release, but the
remaining patches will be finished up for the release after this
one, but the groundwork has been laid for this effort.
Other than that we have in here:
- debugfs memory leak fixes in some subsystems
- error path cleanups and fixes for some never-able-to-be-hit
codepaths.
- cacheinfo rework and fixes
- Other tiny fixes, full details are in the shortlog
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
problems.

Merge tag 'mm-stable-2023-02-20-13-37' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm
Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton:
- Daniel Verkamp has contributed a memfd series ("mm/memfd: add
F_SEAL_EXEC") which permits the setting of the memfd execute bit at
memfd creation time, with the option of sealing the state of the X
bit.
- Peter Xu adds a patch series ("mm/hugetlb: Make huge_pte_offset()
thread-safe for pmd unshare") which addresses a rare race condition
related to PMD unsharing.
- Several folioification patch serieses from Matthew Wilcox, Vishal
Moola, Sidhartha Kumar and Lorenzo Stoakes
- Johannes Weiner has a series ("mm: push down lock_page_memcg()")
which does perform some memcg maintenance and cleanup work.
- SeongJae Park has added DAMOS filtering to DAMON, with the series
"mm/damon/core: implement damos filter".
These filters provide users with finer-grained control over DAMOS's
actions. SeongJae has also done some DAMON cleanup work.
- Kairui Song adds a series ("Clean up and fixes for swap").
- Vernon Yang contributed the series "Clean up and refinement for maple
tree".
- Yu Zhao has contributed the "mm: multi-gen LRU: memcg LRU" series. It
adds to MGLRU an LRU of memcgs, to improve the scalability of global
reclaim.
- David Hildenbrand has added some userfaultfd cleanup work in the
series "mm: uffd-wp + change_protection() cleanups".
- Christoph Hellwig has removed the generic_writepages() library
function in the series "remove generic_writepages".
- Baolin Wang has performed some maintenance on the compaction code in
his series "Some small improvements for compaction".
- Sidhartha Kumar is doing some maintenance work on struct page in his
series "Get rid of tail page fields".
- David Hildenbrand contributed some cleanup, bugfixing and
generalization of pte management and of pte debugging in his series
"mm: support __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE on all architectures with
swap PTEs".
- Mel Gorman and Neil Brown have removed the __GFP_ATOMIC allocation
flag in the series "Discard __GFP_ATOMIC".
- Sergey Senozhatsky has improved zsmalloc's memory utilization with
his series "zsmalloc: make zspage chain size configurable".
- Joey Gouly has added prctl() support for prohibiting the creation of
writeable+executable mappings.
The previous BPF-based approach had shortcomings. See "mm: In-kernel
support for memory-deny-write-execute (MDWE)".
- Waiman Long did some kmemleak cleanup and bugfixing in the series
"mm/kmemleak: Simplify kmemleak_cond_resched() & fix UAF".
- T.J. Alumbaugh has contributed some MGLRU cleanup work in his series
"mm: multi-gen LRU: improve".
- Jiaqi Yan has provided some enhancements to our memory error
statistics reporting, mainly by presenting the statistics on a
per-node basis. See the series "Introduce per NUMA node memory error
statistics".
- Mel Gorman has a second and hopefully final shot at fixing a CPU-hog
regression in compaction via his series "Fix excessive CPU usage
during compaction".
- Christoph Hellwig does some vmalloc maintenance work in the series
"cleanup vfree and vunmap".
- Christoph Hellwig has removed block_device_operations.rw_page() in
ths series "remove ->rw_page".
- We get some maple_tree improvements and cleanups in Liam Howlett's
series "VMA tree type safety and remove __vma_adjust()".
- Suren Baghdasaryan has done some work on the maintainability of our
vm_flags handling in the series "introduce vm_flags modifier
functions".
- Some pagemap cleanup and generalization work in Mike Rapoport's
series "mm, arch: add generic implementation of pfn_valid() for
FLATMEM" and "fixups for generic implementation of pfn_valid()"
- Baoquan He has done some work to make /proc/vmallocinfo and
/proc/kcore better represent the real state of things in his series
"mm/vmalloc.c: allow vread() to read out vm_map_ram areas".
- Jason Gunthorpe rationalized the GUP system's interface to the rest
of the kernel in the series "Simplify the external interface for
GUP".
- SeongJae Park wishes to migrate people from DAMON's debugfs interface
over to its sysfs interface. To support this, we'll temporarily be
printing warnings when people use the debugfs interface. See the
series "mm/damon: deprecate DAMON debugfs interface".
- Andrey Konovalov provided the accurately named "lib/stackdepot: fixes
and clean-ups" series.
- Huang Ying has provided a dramatic reduction in migration's TLB flush
IPI rates with the series "migrate_pages(): batch TLB flushing".
- Arnd Bergmann has some objtool fixups in "objtool warning fixes".

Most architectures (except arm64/x86/sparc) simply return 1 for kern_addr_valid(), which is only used in read_kcore(), and it calls copy_from_kernel_nofault() which could check whether the address is a valid kernel address. TTY/Serial driver update for 6.1-rc1
Here is the big set of TTY and Serial driver updates for 6.1-rc1.
Lots of cleanups in here, no real new functionality this time around,
with the diffstat being that we removed more lines than we added!
Included in here are:
- termios unification cleanups from Al Viro, it's nice to
finally get this work done
- tty serial transmit cleanups in various drivers in preparation
for more cleanup and unification in future releases (that work
was not ready for this release.)
- n_gsm fixes and updates
- ktermios cleanups and code reductions
- dt bindings json conversions and updates for new devices
- some serial driver updates for new devices
- lots of other tiny cleanups and janitorial stuff. Full
details in the shortlog.
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
issues.

asm-generic updates for v6.1
This contains a series from Linus Walleij to unify the linux/io.h interface by making the ia64, alpha, parisc and sparc include asm-generic/io.h. All functions provided by the generic header are now available to all drivers, but the architectures can still override this. For the moment, mips and sh still don't include asm-generic/io.h but provide a full set of functions themselves. There are also a few minor cleanups unrelated to this. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmM8L6sACgkQmmx57+YA GNnmKg/9EgTf+0+KoQ193Xhvav2niOud/AQP2H5wvKlt4csIq5CRb8cHMYYSpmn5 MzifFA4/meeVkbh0LPX4Hue6XqegIe14CRZtIYep5yc1DGjLzEGHTWxkxDWZ5LK9 8mUVPsm7ddCDt99XmI2mZNgy4Qktn3ePo1N+4tgmeadYdYXQXXsL1H1HlfQeVNRk IGvsGx/75QkhOrA20xNL+uwQ9n6ekdwOgj2Z2Q3SHNJPNpyPJLcspBbZ6HEMUG6/ NnEnfqVOz9i1Nonx7Gf6gKXvgRzyU4AIaUW0xADBwtY5/Yq3bC0LQj4HTANkmWo8 lBHAoSm3GicrzMMFb5eeKHkePX5iGSiTChB+TBWN/3Ofxzfma668lDuxdFYGOW+F gK5UsYZXpMuKuVTdWpp2k+swFkNtlBOQoYE6kE2NOLkR40FjaxS67LPAbDMtY9mb WIw10waN5dX0Dxv+ecJoaiQ7TeoIT5zI1plXeh1eJqARHmBX+o45tsVDSZAEvwNG EoVRjtG/aJDXwPDI2OiohEwckadIUnDbnXQI4DOgACy8MPkNITrth6E/Xnv3sAtx QLAojsMp6A3BNlen7LoyWpCWeb177OdnQZJmVVEar8cqAcWX+6HtMtlDIGi1dvEq Wl8JLysHk5jXdqNGYiKYtT8ocGZux0x2fYT/x/OnetBkn5D3DrE= =4dNP -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-6.1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "This contains a series from Linus Walleij to unify the linux/io.h interface by making the ia64, alpha, parisc and sparc include asm-generic/io.h. alpha: add full ioread64/iowrite64 implementation
The previous patch introduced ioread64/iowrite64 declarations, but
this means we no longer get the io-64-nonatomic variant, and
run into a long error when someone actually wants to use these:
ERROR: modpost: "ioread64" [drivers/net/ethernet/freescale/enetc/fsl-enetc.ko] undefined!
Add the (hopefully) correct implementation for each machine type,
based on the 32-bit accessor. Since the 32-bit return type does
not work for ioread64(), change the internal implementation to use
the correct width consistently, but leave the external interface
to match the asm-generic/iomap.h header that uses 32-bit or 64-bit
return values.

termios: get rid of non-UAPI asm/termios.h
All non-UAPI asm/termios.h consist of include of UAPI counterpart
and, possibly, include of linux/uaccess.h
The latter can't be simply removed, even though nothing in
linux/termios.h doesn't depend upon it anymore - there are several
places that rely upon that indirect chain of includes to pull
linux/uaccess.h. So the include needs to be lifted out of there -
we lift into tty_driver.h, serdev.h and places that pull asm/termios.h,
but none of
* linux/uaccess.h (obvious)
* net/sock.h (pulls uaccess.h)
* linux/{tty,tty_driver,serdev}.h (tty.h pulls tty_driver.h)
That leaves us just with the include of UAPI asm/termios.h, which is
what <asm/termios.h> will resolve to if we simply remove non-UAPI header.

termios: consolidate values for VDISCARD in INIT_C_CC
On old systems it used to be ^O. Linux had never actually used the value, but INIT_C_CC (on i386) did initialize it to ^O; unfortunately, it had a typo in the comment claiming that to be ^U. Most of the architectures copied the (correct) definition along with mistaken comment. alpha, powerpc and sparc tried to make the definition match comment. However, util-linux still resets it to ^O on any architecture, ^O is the historical value, kernel ignores it anyway and finally, Linus said "Just change everybody to do the same, nobody cares about VDISCARD". alpha: Use generic <asm-generic/io.h>
This enables the alpha to use <asm-generic/io.h> to fill in the missing (undefined) I/O accessor functions. This is needed if Alpha ever wants to uses CONFIG_REGMAP_MMIO which has been patches to use accelerated _noinc accessors such as readsq/writesq that Alpha, while being a 64bit platform, as of now not yet provide. readq/writeq is however provided so the machine can do 64bit I/O. This comes with the requirement that everything the architecture already provides needs to be defined, rather than just being, say, static inline functions. Bite the bullet and just provide the definitions and make it work. Some defines need to be piled right before the inclusion of <asm-generic/io.h> due to the fact that alpha is including <asm-generic/iomap.h> without selecting GENERIC_IOMAP. asm-generic: updates for 6.0
There are three independent sets of changes:
- Sai Prakash Ranjan adds tracing support to the asm-generic
version of the MMIO accessors, which is intended to help
understand problems with device drivers and has been part
of Qualcomm's vendor kernels for many years.
- A patch from Sebastian Siewior to rework the handling of
IRQ stacks in softirqs across architectures, which is
needed for enabling PREEMPT_RT.
- The last patch to remove the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS option and
some of the code behind that, after the last users of this
old interface made it in through the netdev, scsi, media and
staging trees.

bitops: unify non-atomic bitops prototypes across architectures
Currently, there is a mess with the prototypes of the non-atomic bitops across the different architectures: ret bool, int, unsigned long nr int, long, unsigned int, unsigned long addr volatile unsigned long *, volatile void * Thankfully, it doesn't provoke any bugs, but can sometimes make the compiler angry when it's not handy at all. Adjust all the prototypes to the following standard: ret bool retval can be only 0 or 1 nr unsigned long native; signed makes no sense addr volatile unsigned long * bitmaps are arrays of ulongs Next, some architectures don't define 'arch_' versions as they don't support instrumentation, others do. To make sure there is always the same set of callables present and to ease any potential future changes, make them all follow the rule: * architecture-specific files define only 'arch_' versions; * non-prefixed versions can be defined only in asm-generic files; and place the non-prefixed definitions into a new file in asm-generic to be included by non-instrumented architectures. Finally, add some static assertions in order to prevent people from making a mess in this room again. I also used the %__always_inline attribute consistently, so that they always get resolved to the actual operations. arch/*/: remove CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS
All architecture-independent users of virt_to_bus() and bus_to_virt() have been fixed to use the dma mapping interfaces or have been removed now. This means the definitions on most architectures, and the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS symbol are now obsolete and can be removed. The only exceptions to this are a few network and scsi drivers for m68k Amiga and VME machines and ppc32 Macintosh. These drivers work correctly with the old interfaces and are probably not worth changing. On alpha and parisc, virt_to_bus() were still used in asm/floppy.h. alpha can use isa_virt_to_bus() like x86 does, and parisc can just open-code the virt_to_phys() here, as this is architecture specific code. I tried updating the bus-virt-phys-mapping.rst documentation, which started as an email from Linus to explain some details of the Linux-2.0 driver interfaces. The bits about virt_to_bus() were declared obsolete backin 2000, and the rest is not all that relevant any more, so in the end I just decided to remove the file completely. - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. This
was already gone from all major architectures, but now we can
finally remove it everywhere, which loses some particularly
tricky and error-prone code.
There is a small merge conflict against a parisc cleanup, the
solution is to use their new version.
- The nds32 architecture ends its tenure in the Linux kernel. The
hardware is still used and the code is in reasonable shape, but
the mainline port is not actively maintained any more, as all
remaining users are thought to run vendor kernels that would never
be updated to a future release.
There are some obvious conflicts against changes to the removed
files.
- A series from Masahiro Yamada cleans up some of the uapi header
files to pass the compile-time checks.

uaccess: remove CONFIG_SET_FS
There are no remaining callers of set_fs(), so CONFIG_SET_FS can be removed globally, along with the thread_info field and any references to it. This turns access_ok() into a cheaper check against TASK_SIZE_MAX. uaccess: generalize access_ok()
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. treewide: Replace zero-length arrays with flexible-array members
There is a regular need in the kernel to provide a way to declare
having a dynamically sized set of trailing elements in a structure.
Kernel code should always use “flexible array members”[1] for these
cases. The older style of one-element or zero-length arrays should
no longer be used[2].
This code was transformed with the help of Coccinelle:

lib/xor: make xor prototypes more friendly to compiler vectorization
Modern compilers are perfectly capable of extracting parallelism from the XOR routines, provided that the prototypes reflect the nature of the input accurately, in particular, the fact that the input vectors are expected not to overlap. This is not documented explicitly, but is implied by the interchangeability of the various C routines, some of which use temporary variables while others don't: this means that these routines only behave identically for non-overlapping inputs. So let's decorate these input vectors with the __restrict modifier, which informs the compiler that there is no overlap. While at it, make the input-only vectors pointer-to-const as well. The printk header file includes ratelimit_types.h for its __ratelimit() based usage. It is required for the static initializer used in printk_ratelimited(). alpha: move __udiv_qrnnd library function to arch/alpha/lib/
We already had the implementation for __udiv_qrnnd (unsigned divide for multi-precision arithmetic) as part of the alpha math emulation code. But you can disable the math emulation code - even if you shouldn't - and then the MPI code that actually wants this functionality (and is needed by various crypto functions) will fail to build. So move the extended-precision divide code to be a regular library function, just like all the regular division code is. That way ie is available regardless of math-emulation. alpha: make 'Jensen' IO functions build again
The Jensen IO functions are overly copmplicated because some of the IO addresses refer to special 'local IO' ports, and they get accessed differently. That then makes gcc not actually inline them, and since they were marked "extern inline" when included through the regular <asm/io.h> path, and then only marked "inline" when included from sys_jensen.c, you never necessarily got a body for the IO functions at all. The intent of the sys_jensen.c code is to actually get the non-inlined copy generated, so remove the 'inline' from the magic macro that is supposed to sort this all out. Also, do not mix 'extern inline' functions (that may or may not be inlined and will not generate a function body if they are not) with 'static inline' (that _will_ generate a function body when not inlined). Because gcc will complain about this situation: error: ‘jensen_bus_outb’ is static but used in inline function ‘jensen_outb’ which is not static because gcc basically doesn't know whether to generate a body for that static inline function or not for that call site. So make all of these use that __EXTERN_INLINE marker. Gcc will generally not inline these things on use, and then generate the function body out-of-line in sys_jensen.c. This makes the core IO functions build for the alpha Jensen config. Not that the rest then builds, because it turns out Jensen also doesn't enable PCI, which then makes other drievrs very unhappy, but that's a separate issue. This results in a number of compile errors such as drivers/net/wan/lmc/lmc_main.c: In function 'lmc_softreset': drivers/net/wan/lmc/lmc_main.c:1782:50: error: passing argument 1 of 'virt_to_bus' discards 'volatile' qualifier from pointer target type drivers/atm/ambassador.c: In function 'do_loader_command': drivers/atm/ambassador.c:1747:58: error: passing argument 1 of 'virt_to_bus' discards 'volatile' qualifier from pointer target type Declare the parameter of virt_to_phys and virt_to_bus as pointer to volatile to fix the problem. alpha: Move setup.h out of uapi
Most of the contents of setup.h have no value for userspace applications. The file was probably moved to uapi accidentally. Keep the file in uapi to define the alpha-specific COMMAND_LINE_SIZE. Move all other defines to arch/alpha/include/asm/setup.h. alpha: Add syscall_get_return_value()
audit now requires syscall_get_return_value instead of regs_return_value to retrieve syscall return code . Other architectures that support audit have already define this function. Signed-off-by: He Zhe <zhe.he@windriver.com> Signed-off-by: Matt Turner <mattst88@gmail.com> |
