Merge tag 'pci-v7.2-changes' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pci/pci
Pull pci updates from Bjorn Helgaas:
"Enumeration:
- Remove MPS/MRRS Kconfig settings (CONFIG_PCIE_BUS_*) that worked
around a WiFi device defect; use a quirk or boot-time
"pci=pcie_bus_tune_*" kernel parameter instead (Bjorn Helgaas)
- Always lift 2.5GT/s restriction in PCIe failed link retraining to
avoid clamping a link to 2.5GT/s after hot-plug changes the device
(Maciej W. Rozycki)
- Request bus reassignment when not probe-only to fix an enumeration
regression on Marvell CN106XX and possibly other DT-based systems
(Ratheesh Kannoth)
- Fix procfs race between pci_proc_init() and pci_bus_add_device()
that resulted in 'proc_dir_entry ... already registered' warnings
and pointer corruption (Krzysztof Wilczyński)
- Fix sysfs race that causes 'duplicate filename' warnings and boot
panics by converting PCI resource files to static attributes
(Krzysztof Wilczyński)
- Expose sysfs 'resourceN_resize' attributes only on platforms with
PCI mmap (Krzysztof Wilczyński)
- Require CAP_SYS_ADMIN to write to sysfs 'resourceN_resize'
attributes (Krzysztof Wilczyński)
- Add security_locked_down(LOCKDOWN_PCI_ACCESS) to alpha PCI resource
mmap path to match the generic path (Krzysztof Wilczyński)
- Use kstrtobool() to parse the 'rom' attribute input to avoid the
unexpected behavior of enabling the ROM when writing '0' with no
trailing newline (Krzysztof Wilczyński)
Resource management:
- Improve resource claim logging for debuggability (Ilpo Järvinen)
- Clean up several uses of const parameters (Ilpo Järvinen)
- Check option ROM header signatures and lengths before accessing to
avoid page faults and alignment faults (Guixin Liu)
ASPM:
- Don't reconfigure ASPM when entering low-power D-state; only do it
when returning back to D0 (Carlos Bilbao)
Power management:
- During suspend, set power state to 'unknown' for all devices, not
just those with drivers (Lukas Wunner)
- Skip restoring Resizable BARs and VF Resizable BARs if device
doesn't respond to config reads, to avoid invalid array accesses
(Marco Nenciarini)
- Add pci_suspend_retains_context() so drivers can tell whether
devices retain internal state across suspend/resume, since some
platforms reset devices on suspend; use this in nvme to avoid
issues on Qcom RCs (Manivannan Sadhasivam)
Power control:
- Only to power on/off devices that actually support power control to
avoid poking at incompatible devices mentioned in DT (Manivannan
Sadhasivam)
Virtualization and resets:
- Log device readiness timeouts as errors, not warnings, because the
device is likely unusable in this case (Bjorn Helgaas)
- Wait for device readiness after soft reset (D3hot ->
D0uninitialized transition), when the device may respond with
Request Retry Status (RRS) if it needs more time to initialize
(Bjorn Helgaas)
- Drop unnecessary retries when restoring BARs because resets should
now already include all required delays (Lukas Wunner)
- Avoid FLR for MediaTek MT7925 WiFi, where FLR fails after a VM
terminates uncleanly (Jose Ignacio Tornos Martinez)
- Avoid SBR for Qualcomm WCN6855/WCN7850 WiFi, SDX62/SDX65 modems,
which seem not to support it correctly (Jose Ignacio Tornos
Martinez)
Peer-to-peer DMA:
- Prevent P2PDMA as well as CPU access to non-mappable BARs, e.g.,
s390 ISM BARs (Matt Evans)
- Add Intel QAT, DSA, IAA devices to whitelist (Lukas Wunner)
Endpoint framework:
- Add endpoint controller APIs for use by function drivers to
discover auxiliary blocks like DMA engines (Koichiro Den)

fails (Koichiro Den)
- Validate BAR index and remove dead BAR read in endpoint doorbell
test (Carlos Bilbao)
- Unwind MSI/MSI-X vectors if NTB initialization fails part-way
through (Koichiro Den)
- Cache sleepable pci_irq_vector() value at ISR setup to avoid
calling it from hardirq context (Koichiro Den)
- Call sleepable pci_epc_raise_irq() from a work item instead of
atomic context, e.g., when setting bits in NTB peer doorbells in
the ntb_peer_db_set() path (Koichiro Den)
- Report 0-based vNTB doorbell vector to account for link event 0 and
historically skipped slot 1 (Koichiro Den)
- Prevent configfs writes to vNTB db_count and other values that are
already in use after EPC attach (Koichiro Den)
- Account for vNTB db_valid reserved slots (link event 0 and
historically skipped slot 1) so they don't appear as valid
doorbells (Koichiro Den)
- Implement vNTB .db_vector_count()/mask() for doorbells so clients
can use multiple vectors and avoid thundering herds (Koichiro Den)
- Report 0-based NTB doorbell vector to account for link event 0 and
historically skipped slot 1 (Koichiro Den)
- Fix doorbell bitmask and IRQ vector handling to clear only
specified bits, use the correct vector for non-contiguous Linux IRQ
numbers, and validate incoming vectors (Koichiro Den)
- Implement NTB .db_vector_count()/mask() for doorbells so clients
can use multiple vectors (Koichiro Den)
Native PCIe controller infrastructure:
- Add pci_host_common_link_train_delay() for the mandatory delay
after > 5GT/s Link training completes and use it for cadence HPA,
j721e, LGA; dwc; aardvark, mediatek-gen3, rzg3s (Hans Zhang)
- Protect root bus removal with rescan lock in altera, brcmstb,
cadence, dwc, iproc, mediatek, plda, rockchip to prevent
use-after-free or crashes when racing with sysfs rescan or hotplug
(Hans Zhang)
- Add pci_host_common_parse_ports() for use by any native driver to
parse Root Port properties (per-Link features like width, speed,
PHY, power and reset control, etc should be described in Root Port
stanzas, not the host bridge; currently only reset GPIOs
implemented) (Sherry Sun)

PCI/sysfs: Convert legacy I/O and memory attributes to static definitions
Currently, legacy_io and legacy_mem are dynamically allocated and created by pci_create_legacy_files(), with pci_adjust_legacy_attr() updating the attributes at runtime on Alpha to rename them and shift the size for sparse addressing. Convert to four static const attributes (legacy_io, legacy_io_sparse, legacy_mem, legacy_mem_sparse) with .is_bin_visible() callbacks that use pci_legacy_has_sparse() to select the appropriate variant per bus. The sizes are compile-time constants and .size is set directly on each attribute. Register the groups in pcibus_groups[] under a HAVE_PCI_LEGACY guard so the driver model handles creation and removal automatically. Stub out pci_create_legacy_files() and pci_remove_legacy_files() as the dynamic creation is no longer needed. Remove the __weak pci_adjust_legacy_attr(), Alpha's override, and its declaration from both Alpha and PowerPC asm/pci.h headers. PCI/sysfs: Add __weak pci_legacy_has_sparse() helper
Currently, Alpha's sparse/dense legacy attribute handling is done via pci_adjust_legacy_attr(), which updates dynamically allocated attributes at runtime. The upcoming conversion to static attributes needs a way to determine sparse support at visibility check time. Add a __weak pci_legacy_has_sparse() that returns false by default. Alpha overrides it to check has_sparse() on the bus host controller. alpha/PCI: Convert resource files to static attributes
Previously, Alpha's PCI resource files (resourceN, resourceN_sparse, resourceN_dense) were dynamically created by pci_create_resource_files(), which overrides the generic __weak implementation. The previous code allocated bin_attributes at runtime and managed them via the res_attr[] and res_attr_wc[] fields in struct pci_dev. Convert to static const attributes with three attribute groups (plain, sparse, dense), each with an .is_bin_visible() callback that checks resource length, has_sparse(), and sparse_mem_mmap_fits(). A .bin_size() callback provides the resource size to the kernfs node, with the sparse variant shifting by 5 bits for byte-level addressing. Register the groups via ARCH_PCI_DEV_GROUPS so the driver model handles creation and removal automatically. Use the new pci_resource_is_mem() helper for the type check, replacing the open-coded bitwise flag test. Finally, remove pci_create_resource_files(), pci_remove_resource_files(), pci_create_attr(), and pci_create_one_attr() which are no longer needed. alpha: Remove arch-specific strncpy() implementation
strncpy() has no remaining callers in the kernel[1]. Remove the alpha-specific assembly implementation and __HAVE_ARCH_STRNCPY define, falling back to the generic version in lib/string.c. The __stxncpy helper (stxncpy.S/ev6-stxncpy.S) is retained as it is still used by strncat. Link: https://github.com/KSPP/linux/issues/90 [1] Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org> |

ring-buffer: Flush and stop persistent ring buffer on panic
On real hardware, panic and machine reboot may not flush hardware cache
to memory. This means the persistent ring buffer, which relies on a
coherent state of memory, may not have its events written to the buffer
and they may be lost. Moreover, there may be inconsistency with the
counters which are used for validation of the integrity of the
persistent ring buffer which may cause all data to be discarded.
To avoid this issue, stop recording of the ring buffer on panic and
flush the cache of the ring buffer's memory.

- The 2 patch series "ocfs2/dlm: fix two bugs in dlm_match_regions()"
from Junrui Luo does what is claims.
- The 27 patch series "cleanup the RAID5 XOR library" from Christoph
Hellwig is a quite far-reaching cleanup to this code. I can't do better
than to quote Christoph:
The XOR library used for the RAID5 parity is a bit of a mess right
now. The main file sits in crypto/ despite not being cryptography and
not using the crypto API, with the generic implementations sitting in
include/asm-generic and the arch implementations sitting in an asm/
header in theory. The latter doesn't work for many cases, so
architectures often build the code directly into the core kernel, or
create another module for the architecture code.
Change this to a single module in lib/ that also contains the
architecture optimizations, similar to the library work Eric Biggers
has done for the CRC and crypto libraries later. After that it
changes to better calling conventions that allow for smarter
architecture implementations (although none is contained here yet),
and uses static_call to avoid indirection function call overhead.
- The 2 patch series "lib/list_sort: Clean up list_sort() scheduling
workarounds" from Kuan-Wei Chiu cleans up this library code by removing
a hacky thing which was added for UBIFS, which UBIFS doesn't actually
need.
- The 5 patch series "Fix bugs in extract_iter_to_sg()" from Christian
Ehrhardt fixes a few bugs in the scatterlist code, adds in-kernel tests
for the now-fixed bugs and fixes a leak in the test itself.
- The 3 patch series "kdump: Enable LUKS-encrypted dump target support
in ARM64 and PowerPC" from Coiby Xu eenables support of the
LUKS-encrypted device dump target on arm64 and powerpc.
- The 4 patch series "ocfs2: consolidate extent list validation into
block read callbacks" from Joseph Qi addresses ocfs2's validation of
extent list fields - cleanup, simplification, robustness. (Kernel test
robot loves mounting corrupted fs images!)

alpha: Define pgprot_modify to silence tautological comparison warnings
Alpha's pgprot_noncached, pgprot_writecombine, and pgprot_device are all identity macros, so the generic pgprot_modify() produces tautological self-comparisons that GCC warns about: include/linux/pgtable.h:1701:25: warning: self-comparison always evaluates to true [-Wtautological-compare] Since all caching attributes are no-ops on Alpha, define pgprot_modify() to simply return newprot. alpha: add support for SECCOMP and SECCOMP_FILTER
Add SECCOMP and SECCOMP_FILTER support to the Alpha architecture and fix syscall entry and ptrace issues uncovered by the seccomp-bpf selftests. The syscall entry path is reworked to consistently track syscall state using r0, r1 and r2: - r1 holds the active syscall number - r2 preserves the original syscall number for restart - r0 carries the return value, with r19 (a3) indicating success/error This allows syscall restarts to be permitted only for valid ERESTART* return codes and prevents kernel-internal restart values from leaking to userspace. The syscall tracing error marker is corrected to use the saved syscall number slot, matching the Alpha ABI. Additionally, implement minimal PTRACE_GETREGSET and PTRACE_SETREGSET support for NT_PRSTATUS, exporting struct pt_regs directly. This fixes ptrace-based seccomp tests that previously failed with -EIO. With these changes, seccomp-bpf and ptrace syscall tests pass reliably on Alpha. arch, mm: consolidate empty_zero_page
Reduce 22 declarations of empty_zero_page to 3 and 23 declarations of ZERO_PAGE() to 4. Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page). Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement colored zero page (MIPS and s390). ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static inline causes severe pain in header dependencies. For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy: * alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only * arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact. * m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock, although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS will work fine. * sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE() but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to empty_zero_page. * sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot. Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic empty_zero_page. * hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page /* A handy thing to have if one has the RAM. Declared in head.S */ that unfortunately had to go :) Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20260211103141.3215197-4-rppt@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport (Microsoft) <rppt@kernel.org> Acked-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> [parisc] Tested-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> [parisc] Reviewed-by: Christophe Leroy (CS GROUP) <chleroy@kernel.org> Acked-by: Dave Hansen <dave.hansen@linux.intel.com> Acked-by: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Acked-by: Magnus Lindholm <linmag7@gmail.com> [alpha] Acked-by: Dinh Nguyen <dinguyen@kernel.org> [nios2] Acked-by: Andreas Larsson <andreas@gaisler.com> [sparc] Acked-by: David Hildenbrand (Arm) <david@kernel.org> Acked-by: Liam R. alpha: mm: enable MMU_GATHER_RCU_TABLE_FREE
On a 64-bit system, madvise(MADV_DONTNEED) may cause a large number of empty PTE page table pages (such as 100GB+). To resolve this problem, first enable MMU_GATHER_RCU_TABLE_FREE to prepare for enabling the PT_RECLAIM feature, which resolves this problem. alpha: fix user-space corruption during memory compaction
Alpha systems can suffer sporadic user-space crashes and heap corruption when memory compaction is enabled. Symptoms include SIGSEGV, glibc allocator failures (e.g. "unaligned tcache chunk"), and compiler internal errors. The failures disappear when compaction is disabled or when using global TLB invalidation. The root cause is insufficient TLB shootdown during page migration. Alpha relies on ASN-based MM context rollover for instruction cache coherency, but this alone is not sufficient to prevent stale data or instruction translations from surviving migration. Fix this by introducing a migration-specific helper that combines: - MM context invalidation (ASN rollover), - immediate per-CPU TLB invalidation (TBI), - synchronous cross-CPU shootdown when required. The helper is used only by migration/compaction paths to avoid changing global TLB semantics. Additionally, update flush_tlb_other(), pte_clear(), to use READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() for correct SMP memory ordering. This fixes observed crashes on both UP and SMP Alpha systems. treewide: provide a generic clear_user_page() variant
Patch series "mm: folio_zero_user: clear page ranges", v11.
This series adds clearing of contiguous page ranges for hugepages.
The series improves on the current discontiguous clearing approach in two
ways:
- clear pages in a contiguous fashion.
- use batched clearing via clear_pages() wherever exposed.
The first is useful because it allows us to make much better use of
hardware prefetchers.
The second, enables advertising the real extent to the processor. Where
specific instructions support it (ex. string instructions on x86; "mops"
on arm64 etc), a processor can optimize based on this because, instead of
seeing a sequence of 8-byte stores, or a sequence of 4KB pages, it sees a
larger unit being operated on.
For instance, AMD Zen uarchs (for extents larger than LLC-size) switch to
a mode where they start eliding cacheline allocation. This is helpful not
just because it results in higher bandwidth, but also because now the
cache is not evicting useful cachelines and replacing them with zeroes.
Demand faulting a 64GB region shows performance improvement:
$ perf bench mem mmap -p $pg-sz -f demand -s 64GB -l 5
baseline +series
(GBps +- %stdev) (GBps +- %stdev)
pg-sz=2MB 11.76 +- 1.10% 25.34 +- 1.18% [*] +115.47% preempt=*
pg-sz=1GB 24.85 +- 2.41% 39.22 +- 2.32% + 57.82% preempt=none|voluntary
pg-sz=1GB (similar) 52.73 +- 0.20% [#] +112.19% preempt=full|lazy
[*] This improvement is because switching to sequential clearing
allows the hardware prefetchers to do a much better job.
[#] For pg-sz=1GB a large part of the improvement is because of the
cacheline elision mentioned above. preempt=full|lazy improves upon
that because, not needing explicit invocations of cond_resched() to
ensure reasonable preemption latency, it can clear the full extent
as a single unit. In comparison the maximum extent used for
preempt=none|voluntary is PROCESS_PAGES_NON_PREEMPT_BATCH (32MB).
When provided the full extent the processor forgoes allocating
cachelines on this path almost entirely.
(The hope is that eventually, in the fullness of time, the lazy
preemption model will be able to do the same job that none or
voluntary models are used for, allowing us to do away with
cond_resched().)
Raghavendra also tested previous version of the series on AMD Genoa and
sees similar improvement [1] with preempt=lazy.
$ perf bench mem map -p $page-size -f populate -s 64GB -l 10

This patch (of 8):
Let's drop all variants that effectively map to clear_page() and provide
it in a generic variant instead.
We'll use the macro clear_user_page to indicate whether an architecture
provides it's own variant.
Also, clear_user_page() is only called from the generic variant of
clear_user_highpage(), so define it only if the architecture does not
provide a clear_user_highpage(). And, for simplicity define it in
linux/highmem.h.
Note that for parisc, clear_page() and clear_user_page() map to
clear_page_asm(), so we can just get rid of the custom clear_user_page()
implementation. There is a clear_user_page_asm() function on parisc, that
seems to be unused. Not sure what's up with that.

alpha: Replace __ASSEMBLY__ with __ASSEMBLER__ in the alpha headers
While the GCC and Clang compilers already define __ASSEMBLER__ automatically when compiling assembly code, __ASSEMBLY__ is a macro that only gets defined by the Makefiles in the kernel. This can be very confusing when switching between userspace and kernelspace coding, or when dealing with uapi headers that rather should use __ASSEMBLER__ instead. So let's standardize now on the __ASSEMBLER__ macro that is provided by the compilers. This is a completely mechanical patch (done with a simple "sed -i" statement). - Add support for a lockless bitmap.
A key feature for the new bitmap are that the IO fastpath is
lockless. If a user issues lots of write IO to the same bitmap
bit in a short time, only the first write has additional overhead
to update bitmap bit, no additional overhead for the following
writes.
By supporting only resync or recover written data, means in the
case creating new array or replacing with a new disk, there is no
need to do a full disk resync/recovery.
- Switch ->getgeo() and ->bios_param() to using struct gendisk rather
than struct block_device.
- Rust block changes via Andreas. This series adds configuration via
configfs and remote completion to the rnull driver. The series also
includes a set of changes to the rust block device driver API: a few
cleanup patches, and a few features supporting the rnull changes.
The series removes the raw buffer formatting logic from
`kernel::block` and improves the logic available in `kernel::string`
to support the same use as the removed logic.
- floppy arch cleanups
- Reduce the number of dereferencing needed for ublk commands
- Restrict supported sockets for nbd. Mostly done to eliminate a class
of issues perpetually reported by syzbot, by using nonsensical socket
setups.
- A few s390 dasd block fixes
- Fix a few issues around atomic writes
- Improve DMA interation for integrity requests
- Improve how iovecs are treated with regards to O_DIRECT aligment

- Use page references properly for brd, avoiding very long RCU sections

alpha: unobfuscate _PAGE_P() definition
Way, way back it used to be _PAGE_NORMAL((x) | ((x & _PAGE_FOW) ? 0 : _PAGE_FOW | _PAGE_COW)) Then (in 1.3.54) _PAGE_COW had died. Result: _PAGE_NORMAL((x) | ((x & _PAGE_FOW) ? 0 : _PAGE_FOW)) which is somewhat... obscure. What it does is simply _PAGE_NORMAL((x) | _PAGE_FOW) and IMO that's easier to follow. alpha: Add __attribute_const__ to ffs()-family implementations
While tracking down a problem where constant expressions used by BUILD_BUG_ON() suddenly stopped working[1], we found that an added static initializer was convincing the compiler that it couldn't track the state of the prior statically initialized value. Tracing this down found that ffs() was used in the initializer macro, but since it wasn't marked with __attribute__const__, the compiler had to assume the function might change variable states as a side-effect (which is not true for ffs(), which provides deterministic math results). Add missing __attribute_const__ annotations to Alpha's implementations of __ffs(), ffs(), fls64(), __fls(), fls(), and ffz() functions. These are pure mathematical functions that always return the same result for the same input with no side effects, making them eligible for compiler optimization. practical access monitoring" from SeongJae Park adds a new kernel module
which simplifies the setup and usage of DAMON in production
environments.
- The 6 patch series "stop passing a writeback_control to swap/shmem
writeout" from Christoph Hellwig is a cleanup to the writeback code
which removes a couple of pointers from struct writeback_control.
- The 7 patch series "drivers/base/node.c: optimization and cleanups"
from Donet Tom contains largely uncorrelated cleanups to the NUMA node
setup and management code.
- The 4 patch series "mm: userfaultfd: assorted fixes and cleanups" from

vmf_insert_pfn_pud() fixes" from David Hildenbrand addresses some warts
which David noticed in the huge page code. These were not known to be
causing any issues at this time.
- The 3 patch series "mm/damon: use alloc_migrate_target() for
DAMOS_MIGRATE_{HOT,COLD" from SeongJae Park provides some cleanup and
consolidation work in DAMON.
- The 3 patch series "use vm_flags_t consistently" from Lorenzo Stoakes
uses vm_flags_t in places where we were inappropriately using other
types.
- The 3 patch series "mm/memfd: Reserve hugetlb folios before
allocation" from Vivek Kasireddy increases the reliability of large page
allocation in the memfd code.
- The 14 patch series "mm: Remove pXX_devmap page table bit and pfn_t
type" from Alistair Popple removes several now-unneeded PFN_* flags.

cleans up the pageblock isolation code and fixes a potential issue which
doesn't seem to cause any problems in practice.
- The 5 patch series "selftests/damon: add python and drgn based DAMON
sysfs functionality tests" from SeongJae Park adds additional drgn- and
python-based DAMON selftests which are more comprehensive than the
existing selftest suite.
- The 5 patch series "Misc rework on hugetlb faulting path" from Oscar
Salvador fixes a rather obscure deadlock in the hugetlb fault code and
follows that fix with a series of cleanups.

monitoring intervals and DAMOS quota" from SeongJae Park adds some
tracepoints to some DAMON auto-tuning code.
- The 6 patch series "mm/damon: fix misc bugs in DAMON modules" from
SeongJae Park does that.
- The 6 patch series "mm/damon: misc cleanups" from SeongJae Park also
does what it claims.
- The 4 patch series "mm: folio_pte_batch() improvements" from David
Hildenbrand cleans up the large folio PTE batching code.
- The 13 patch series "mm/damon/vaddr: Allow interleaving in
migrate_{hot,cold} actions" from SeongJae Park facilitates dynamic
alteration of DAMON's inter-node allocation policy.
- The 3 patch series "Remove unmap_and_put_page()" from Vishal Moola
provides a couple of page->folio conversions.
- The 4 patch series "mm: per-node proactive reclaim" from Davidlohr
Bueso implements a per-node control of proactive reclaim - beyond the
current memcg-based implementation.
- The 14 patch series "mm/damon: remove damon_callback" from SeongJae
Park replaces the damon_callback interface with a more general and
powerful damon_call()+damos_walk() interface.
- The 10 patch series "mm/mremap: permit mremap() move of multiple VMAs"
from Lorenzo Stoakes implements a number of mremap cleanups (of course)
in preparation for adding new mremap() functionality: newly permit the
remapping of multiple VMAs when the user is specifying MREMAP_FIXED. It
still excludes some specialized situations where this cannot be
performed reliably.
- The 3 patch series "drop hugetlb_free_pgd_range()" from Anthony Yznaga
switches some sparc hugetlb code over to the generic version and removes
the thus-unneeded hugetlb_free_pgd_range().
- The 4 patch series "mm/damon/sysfs: support periodic and automated
stats update" from SeongJae Park augments the present
userspace-requested update of DAMON sysfs monitoring files. Automatic

functions can grab a copy of a pageframe and inspect it locklessly
without tripping over the races inherent in operating on the live
pageframe directly.
- The 6 patch series "use per-vma locks for /proc/pid/maps reads" from
Suren Baghdasaryan addresses the large contention issues which can be
triggered by reads from that procfs file. Latencies are reduced by more
than half in some situations. The series also introduces several new
selftests for the /proc/pid/maps interface.
- The 6 patch series "__folio_split() clean up" from Zi Yan cleans up
__folio_split()!

volatile("" : "+r" (XXX));" and some cleanup" from wang lian does some
cleanup work in the selftests code.
- The 3 patch series "tools/testing: expand mremap testing" from Lorenzo
Stoakes extends the mremap() selftest in several ways, including adding
more checking of Lorenzo's recently added "permit mremap() move of
multiple VMAs" feature.
- The 22 patch series "selftests/damon/sysfs.py: test all parameters"
from SeongJae Park extends the DAMON sysfs interface selftest so that it
tests all possible user-requested parameters. Rather than the present

Merge tag 'mm-stable-2025-07-30-15-25' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm
Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton:
"As usual, many cleanups. The below blurbiage describes 42 patchsets.
21 of those are partially or fully cleanup work. "cleans up",
"cleanup", "maintainability", "rationalizes", etc.
I never knew the MM code was so dirty.
"mm: ksm: prevent KSM from breaking merging of new VMAs" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
addresses an issue with KSM's PR_SET_MEMORY_MERGE mode: newly
mapped VMAs were not eligible for merging with existing adjacent
VMAs.
"mm/damon: introduce DAMON_STAT for simple and practical access monitoring" (SeongJae Park)
adds a new kernel module which simplifies the setup and usage of
DAMON in production environments.
"stop passing a writeback_control to swap/shmem writeout" (Christoph Hellwig)
is a cleanup to the writeback code which removes a couple of
pointers from struct writeback_control.
"drivers/base/node.c: optimization and cleanups" (Donet Tom)
contains largely uncorrelated cleanups to the NUMA node setup and
management code.
"mm: userfaultfd: assorted fixes and cleanups" (Tal Zussman)
does some maintenance work on the userfaultfd code.
"Readahead tweaks for larger folios" (Ryan Roberts)
implements some tuneups for pagecache readahead when it is reading
into order>0 folios.
"selftests/mm: Tweaks to the cow test" (Mark Brown)
provides some cleanups and consistency improvements to the
selftests code.
"Optimize mremap() for large folios" (Dev Jain)
does that. A 37% reduction in execution time was measured in a
memset+mremap+munmap microbenchmark.
"Remove zero_user()" (Matthew Wilcox)
expunges zero_user() in favor of the more modern memzero_page().
"mm/huge_memory: vmf_insert_folio_*() and vmf_insert_pfn_pud() fixes" (David Hildenbrand)
addresses some warts which David noticed in the huge page code.
These were not known to be causing any issues at this time.
"mm/damon: use alloc_migrate_target() for DAMOS_MIGRATE_{HOT,COLD" (SeongJae Park)
provides some cleanup and consolidation work in DAMON.
"use vm_flags_t consistently" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
uses vm_flags_t in places where we were inappropriately using other
types.
"mm/memfd: Reserve hugetlb folios before allocation" (Vivek Kasireddy)
increases the reliability of large page allocation in the memfd
code.
"mm: Remove pXX_devmap page table bit and pfn_t type" (Alistair Popple)
removes several now-unneeded PFN_* flags.
"mm/damon: decouple sysfs from core" (SeongJae Park)
implememnts some cleanup and maintainability work in the DAMON
sysfs layer.
"madvise cleanup" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
does quite a lot of cleanup/maintenance work in the madvise() code.
"madvise anon_name cleanups" (Vlastimil Babka)
provides additional cleanups on top or Lorenzo's effort.
"Implement numa node notifier" (Oscar Salvador)
creates a standalone notifier for NUMA node memory state changes.
Previously these were lumped under the more general memory
on/offline notifier.
"Make MIGRATE_ISOLATE a standalone bit" (Zi Yan)
cleans up the pageblock isolation code and fixes a potential issue
which doesn't seem to cause any problems in practice.
"selftests/damon: add python and drgn based DAMON sysfs functionality tests" (SeongJae Park)
adds additional drgn- and python-based DAMON selftests which are
more comprehensive than the existing selftest suite.
"Misc rework on hugetlb faulting path" (Oscar Salvador)
fixes a rather obscure deadlock in the hugetlb fault code and
follows that fix with a series of cleanups.
"cma: factor out allocation logic from __cma_declare_contiguous_nid" (Mike Rapoport)
rationalizes and cleans up the highmem-specific code in the CMA
allocator.
"mm/migration: rework movable_ops page migration (part 1)" (David Hildenbrand)
provides cleanups and future-preparedness to the migration code.
"mm/damon: add trace events for auto-tuned monitoring intervals and DAMOS quota" (SeongJae Park)
adds some tracepoints to some DAMON auto-tuning code.
"mm/damon: fix misc bugs in DAMON modules" (SeongJae Park)
does that.
"mm/damon: misc cleanups" (SeongJae Park)
also does what it claims.
"mm: folio_pte_batch() improvements" (David Hildenbrand)
cleans up the large folio PTE batching code.
"mm/damon/vaddr: Allow interleaving in migrate_{hot,cold} actions" (SeongJae Park)
facilitates dynamic alteration of DAMON's inter-node allocation
policy.
"Remove unmap_and_put_page()" (Vishal Moola)
provides a couple of page->folio conversions.
"mm: per-node proactive reclaim" (Davidlohr Bueso)
implements a per-node control of proactive reclaim - beyond the
current memcg-based implementation.
"mm/damon: remove damon_callback" (SeongJae Park)
replaces the damon_callback interface with a more general and
powerful damon_call()+damos_walk() interface.
"mm/mremap: permit mremap() move of multiple VMAs" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
implements a number of mremap cleanups (of course) in preparation
for adding new mremap() functionality: newly permit the remapping
of multiple VMAs when the user is specifying MREMAP_FIXED. It still
excludes some specialized situations where this cannot be performed
reliably.
"drop hugetlb_free_pgd_range()" (Anthony Yznaga)
switches some sparc hugetlb code over to the generic version and
removes the thus-unneeded hugetlb_free_pgd_range().
"mm/damon/sysfs: support periodic and automated stats update" (SeongJae Park)
augments the present userspace-requested update of DAMON sysfs
monitoring files. Automatic update is now provided, along with a
tunable to control the update interval.
"Some randome fixes and cleanups to swapfile" (Kemeng Shi)
does what is claims.
"mm: introduce snapshot_page" (Luiz Capitulino and David Hildenbrand)
provides (and uses) a means by which debug-style functions can grab
a copy of a pageframe and inspect it locklessly without tripping
over the races inherent in operating on the live pageframe
directly.
"use per-vma locks for /proc/pid/maps reads" (Suren Baghdasaryan)
addresses the large contention issues which can be triggered by
reads from that procfs file. Latencies are reduced by more than
half in some situations. The series also introduces several new
selftests for the /proc/pid/maps interface.
"__folio_split() clean up" (Zi Yan)
cleans up __folio_split()!
"Optimize mprotect() for large folios" (Dev Jain)
provides some quite large (>3x) speedups to mprotect() when dealing
with large folios.
"selftests/mm: reuse FORCE_READ to replace "asm volatile("" : "+r" (XXX));" and some cleanup" (wang lian)
does some cleanup work in the selftests code.
"tools/testing: expand mremap testing" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
extends the mremap() selftest in several ways, including adding
more checking of Lorenzo's recently added "permit mremap() move of
multiple VMAs" feature.
"selftests/damon/sysfs.py: test all parameters" (SeongJae Park)
extends the DAMON sysfs interface selftest so that it tests all
possible user-requested parameters. Rather than the present minimal
subset"

mm/percpu: conditionally define _shared_alloc_tag via CONFIG_ARCH_MODULE_NEEDS_WEAK_PER_CPU
Recently discovered this entry while checking kallsyms on ARM64: ffff800083e509c0 D _shared_alloc_tag If ARCH_NEEDS_WEAK_PER_CPU is not defined(it is only defined for s390 and alpha architectures), there's no need to statically define the percpu variable _shared_alloc_tag. Therefore, we need to implement isolation for this purpose. When building the core kernel code for s390 or alpha architectures, ARCH_NEEDS_WEAK_PER_CPU remains undefined (as it is gated by #if defined(MODULE)). However, when building modules for these architectures, the macro is explicitly defined. Therefore, we remove all instances of ARCH_NEEDS_WEAK_PER_CPU from the code and introduced CONFIG_ARCH_MODULE_NEEDS_WEAK_PER_CPU to replace the relevant logic. We can now conditionally define the perpcu variable _shared_alloc_tag based on CONFIG_ARCH_MODULE_NEEDS_WEAK_PER_CPU. This allows architectures (such as s390/alpha) that require weak definitions for percpu variables in modules to include the definition, while others can omit it via compile-time exclusion. alpha: regularize the situation with asm/param.h
The only reason why alpha can't do what sparc et.al. are doing is that include/asm-generic/param.h relies upon the value of HZ set for userland header in uapi/asm/param.h being 100. We need that value to define USER_HZ and we need that definition to outlive the redefinition of HZ kernel-side. And alpha needs it to be 1024, not 100 like everybody else. So let's add __USER_HZ to uapi/asm-generic/param.h, defaulting to 100 and used to define HZ. That way include/asm-generic/param.h can use that thing instead of open-coding it - it won't be affected by undefining and redefining HZ. That done, alpha asm/param.h can be removed and uapi/asm/param.h switched to defining __USER_HZ and EXEC_PAGESIZE and then including <asm-generic/param.h> - asm/param.h will resolve to uapi/asm/param.h, which pulls <asm-generic/param.h>, which will do the right thing both in the kernel and userland contexts. asm-generic changes for 6.15
This is mainly set of cleanups of asm-generic/io.h, resolving problems with inconsistent semantics of ioread64/iowrite64 that were causing runtime and build issues. The "GENERIC_IOMAP" version that switches between inb()/outb() and readb()/writeb() style accessors is now only used on architectures that have PC-style ISA devices that are not memory mapped (x86, uml, m68k-q40 and powerpc-powernv), while alpha and parisc use a more complicated variant and everything else just maps the ioread interfaces to plan MMIO (readb/writeb etc). In addition there are two small changes from Raag Jadav to simplify the asm-generic/io.h indirect inclusions and from Jann Horn to fix a corner case with read_word_at_a_time. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEiK/NIGsWEZVxh/FrYKtH/8kJUicFAmfkb2MACgkQYKtH/8kJ UicZMg//Va7h0cZBAM64yvHH9SJ1JrM2u4oZNspvcWuncpqaDp3/lFAUBf1m0m46 PhZ8mJmVm/qD7DH8uJRA4kI9t0hjeI1nwb2Pgo60omEpZKY2nIJMsJMIluQYEdAt nthz9RUvNOu0WSR/zMVmLfEAtncNewJzyUrlTnoQnIM9S+WQ8e5f1TxZbaz754Cb XYOpfZNj4nyP3wXtMedee3eZiKKxs/OcZBLoGyKnrBIkUbHCucXsAL962SoI3AXr pMjAIVNC1588fhOc2fA9Jl3K73j8Tj7/34UM+ztd5wxI1lwepxq4EDOCyJrhF5Oh z7oZ4laGoIc4i1aSrUWFK10TrcSBvC9D3zvUjYL8ryYw3HrpB3VppcObpCBtpWZS 97LGSlwq8UmkQOXt8xFzffOEDSh97ojxJAvUUUtuQtnS7PbkmyZ/OCnddBb0F7pa Bg68mzzZHm8/WUCMXwKxh+GA+qVZsMsPaPaexS/aG/TuV7+Mnj93GY1GSkj3Qzaw T9eUuGnFRCvSHU/WJ/Lrl4X1dFdWgHAbSOMNZBVfRFgSUt1ypChV1Sqt2jEfe6Uv dEeD84vZ0uhTsLoFVv/V4xY0osGKL+kAAtEwszLPfmP43kH+jC7cD3+CSTHW0IgV EHuFcjv2CraTF3wvX8Mph6ivoh1EwW/ycFm2mw8onloUUZaoMHM= =6j9g -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-6.15-2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "This is mainly set of cleanups of asm-generic/io.h, resolving problems with inconsistent semantics of ioread64/iowrite64 that were causing runtime and build issues. alpha/elf: Fix misc/setarch test of util-linux by removing 32bit support
Richard Henderson <richard.henderson@linaro.org> writes[1]: > There was a Spec benchmark (I forget which) which was memory bound and ran > twice as fast with 32-bit pointers. > > I copied the idea from DEC to the ELF abi, but never did all the other work > to allow the toolchain to take advantage. > > Amusingly, a later Spec changed the benchmark data sets to not fit into a > 32-bit address space, specifically because of this. > > I expect one could delete the ELF bit and personality and no one would > notice. Not even the 10 remaining Alpha users. In [2] it was pointed out that parts of setarch weren't working properly on alpha because it has it's own SET_PERSONALITY implementation. In the discussion that followed Richard Henderson pointed out that the 32bit pointer support for alpha was never completed. Fix this by removing alpha's 32bit pointer support. As a bit of paranoia refuse to execute any alpha binaries that have the EF_ALPHA_32BIT flag set. Just in case someone somewhere has binaries that try to use alpha's 32bit pointer support. asm-generic: provide generic page_to_phys and phys_to_page implementations
page_to_phys is duplicated by all architectures, and from some strange reason placed in <asm/io.h> where it doesn't fit at all. phys_to_page is only provided by a few architectures despite having a lot of open coded users. Provide generic versions in <asm-generic/memory_model.h> to make these helpers more easily usable. Note with this patch powerpc loses the CONFIG_DEBUG_VIRTUAL pfn_valid check. We used to generate different helpers for local and full

Compile-testing the crypto/caam driver on alpha showed a pre-existing problem on alpha with iowrite64be() missing: ERROR: modpost: "iowrite64be" [drivers/crypto/caam/caam_jr.ko] undefined! The prototypes were added a while ago when we started using asm-generic/io.h, but the implementation was still missing. At some point the ioread64/iowrite64 helpers were added, but the big-endian versions are still missing, and the generic version (using readq/writeq) is would not work here. alpha: drop pre-EV56 support
All EV4 machines are already gone, and the remaining EV5 based machines all support the slightly more modern EV56 generation as well. Debian only supports EV56 and later. Drop both of these and build kernels optimized for EV56 and higher when the "generic" options is selected, tuning for an out-of-order EV6 pipeline, same as Debian userspace. Since this was the only supported architecture without 8-bit and 16-bit stores, common kernel code no longer has to worry about aligning struct members, and existing workarounds from the block and tty layers can be removed. The alpha memory management code no longer needs an abstraction for the differences between EV4 and EV5+. Link: https://lists.debian.org/debian-alpha/2023/05/msg00009.html Acked-by: Paul E.
