perf mutex: Add a robust, process-shared mutex initializer
A mutex held by a process that can die before unlocking it, like the tests forked by 'perf test' that will take turns using the per user budget set in kernel.perf_event_mlock_kb, has to be taken over by the next locker instead of staying locked forever. Robust mutexes, on top of the kernel's robust futexes, do that: when an owner dies while holding it the kernel marks the futex word owner-died and the next pthread_mutex_lock() returns EOWNERDEAD, then mutex_lock() makes it consistent and takes it over; mutex_trylock() and cond_wait() come back with EOWNERDEAD too, so they take it over the same way, with mutex_trylock() giving the mutex back when it can't be taken over: it is held all the same, and a failed trylock must not leak it. Add mutex_init_pshared_robust(), returning false when robust mutexes aren't available: from libcs without the API, gated by a feature check, to musl and glibc refusing them at runtime, when get_robust_list(2) or set_robust_list(2) aren't usable. glibc only sets a flag in pthread_mutexattr_setrobust(), refusing the mutex itself in pthread_mutex_init() with ENOTSUP instead, other errors from it still being reported. Robust mutexes being unavailable isn't an error, just a debug message for whoever then falls back. tools feature gettid: Undef _GNU_SOURCE before defining it
Since most of tools/build/feature/test-*.c feature tests are included in
tools/build/feature/test-all.c, we can't just definie _GNU_SOURCE as it
may already been defined and this will break the build with:
acme@alta:~$ cat /tmp/build/perf-tools-next/feature/test-all.make.output
In file included from test-all.c:26:
test-gettid.c:3:9: error: "_GNU_SOURCE" redefined [-Werror]
3 | #define _GNU_SOURCE
| ^~~~~~~~~~~
In file included from /usr/include/python3.13/pyconfig.h:9,
from /usr/include/python3.13/Python.h:14,
from test-python-module.c:2,
from test-all.c:14:
/usr/include/aarch64-linux-gnu/python3.13/pyconfig.h:1810:10: note: this is the location of the previous definition
1810 | # define _GNU_SOURCE 1
| ^~~~~~~~~~~
cc1: all warnings being treated as errors
acme@alta:~$
I.e. pyconfig.h is included by the new test-python-module.c, that is at
the start of test-all.c, defines _GNU_SOURCE, noticed on Debian 13
(/usr/include/aarch64-linux-gnu/python3.13/pyconfig.h, libpython
3.13.5-2+deb13u5), and then test-all.c includes test-gettid.c that was
defining it as well, undef it first as does several other tests.

perf script: Support standalone scripts and remove embedded scripting
Refactor 'perf script' to launch standalone scripts directly via fork() and execvp() and remove the legacy embedded Perl and Python scripting engines: - Remove the embedded Perl scripting engine (util/scripting-engines/trace-event-perl.c), Perl scripts, bin wrappers, and Trace-Util library (scripts/perl/Perf-Trace-Util/), and script_perl.sh test. - Remove libperl feature checks from Makefile.config, Makefile.perf, builtin-check.c, and Documentation/perf-check.txt. - Remove -g / --gen-script option and scripting_ops dispatch table from builtin-script.c and trace-event-scripting.c. - Hide the legacy -s / --script option and update script discovery in find_script() and list_available_scripts() to prioritize the system 'python' directory over bare filenames in the current directory. - Update the Python script shell tests (test_arm_coresight_disasm.sh, test_task_analyzer.sh, and test_*_python.sh) to invoke scripts via 'perf script <script>' rather than running the Python interpreter directly on the script file path. perf Makefile: Update Python script installation path
Replace the libpython feature test with a python-module feature test checking for Python C extension build capability, and update feature test references accordingly. Remove references to the legacy scripts/python directory and install standalone Python scripts (python/*.py), type stubs (python/perf.pyi), and the compiled perf extension module (python/perf*.so, when built) directly under the python directory in libexec. Update the TUI script browser (ui/browsers/scripts.c) to discover standalone scripts from the updated installation path. perf dwarf-aux: Add die_same_file() and die_get_type_die()
dwarf_dieoffset() is relative to the file the DIE is in, so an offset saved by die_collect_vars()/die_collect_global_vars() is only meaningful in that file: add die_same_file(), comparing the Dwarf each DIE's CU belongs to, and die_get_type_die(), resolving the offset in it with the saved tag as a sanity check. Resolving the offset in the main file instead parses whatever is at it when it came from the dwz common file. dwarf_cu_getdwarf() is new in elfutils 0.160, so the libdw feature test probes for it and Makefile.config says 0.160. tools: Port perf ui from GTK 2 to GTK 4
Port straight to GTK 4 rather than GTK 3, since GTK 4 is where new development happens and GTK 3 is old itself now. GTK 4 drops GtkContainer, GdkScreen, and the gtk_main()/ gtk_dialog_run() family perf's GTK UI relied on. Containers get per-widget setters (gtk_box_append() and friends), monitor geometry comes from GdkMonitor instead of GdkScreen, and the main and error-dialog loops become explicit GMainLoops quit from the "close-request" and "response" signals. Widgets are visible by default now, so gtk_widget_show_all()/set_no_show_all() go away, and the remaining gtk_widget_show()/gtk_widget_hide() calls become gtk_widget_set_visible() (with a small wrapper where "response" needs to pass gtk_widget_hide() as a callback, since it no longer exists as a plain function). gtk_ui_progress__finish() skips destroying a progress dialog that was never created, since gtk_window_destroy() asserts on NULL where the old widget destroy tolerated it. Two spots the GTK 2 to GTK 3 port had missed (builtin-annotate.c, ui/gtk/setup.c still using HAVE_GTK2_SUPPORT and gtk_main_quit()) are fixed to match. Runtime fallout from the new signal-driven loops: the error dialog's nested loop hung if the parent window closed (GTK_DIALOG_DESTROY_WITH_PARENT destroys without emitting "response"); gtk_info_bar_get_content_area() is gone, breaking GTK_INFO_BAR_SUPPORT; the progress dialog's static widget pointers dangled after a manual close; perf_gtk__error() and the warning functions reused an exhausted va_list when vasprintf() failed. The error loop is tracked in a list instead of a single pointer, since perf_gtk__error() can be called re-entrantly (the dialog isn't modal) and a lone global leaked the outer loop when that happened. The list is only ever touched from the main thread: perf_gtk__error() updates it while handling a dialog, and SIGINT/SIGQUIT/SIGTERM are deferred to a GLib source via g_unix_signal_add() rather than calling perf_gtk__exit() straight out of a real signal handler, so quitting on those signals is serialized with the list update instead of racing it from signal-handler context. SIGSEGV/SIGFPE keep a real handler, since they're synchronous faults with no "later" to defer to, but it's pared down to reporting and reraising the default disposition (perf_gtk__fatal_signal()): there's no safe way to run GTK/GLib code from the faulting context. stdarg.h, stdio.h, and string.h are now included explicitly where used (util.c, hists.c, annotate.c) rather than relying on transitive includes, which musl doesn't guarantee. The gtk4-infobar feature check is dropped: GtkInfoBar has existed unconditionally since GTK 3.10, so the check can only ever pass, and it was failing outright here anyway since gtk_info_bar_new() is deprecated and the check treats deprecation warnings as errors. HAVE_GTK_INFO_BAR_SUPPORT and its statusbar-only fallback go away; the info bar is now built unconditionally. perf data ctf: replace libbabeltrace with babeltrace2-ctf-writer
The 1.x branch of Babeltrace has been superseded by 2.x in 2020 and has been unmaintained since 2022, efforts have started to remove it from popular distributions. Babeltrace 2.x offers a very similar 'ctf-writer' library that can be used with minimal changes for the '--to-ctf' feature and has been packaged since Debian 11 and Fedora 32. This patch replaces the 'libbabeltrace' build feature with 'babeltrace2-ctf-writer' using pkgconfig detection, adjusts the naming of the public headers and applies minor API cleanups. There is no changes to the output ctf traces, the ctf-writer API still implements version 1.8 of the CTF specification that can be read by either Babeltrace 1 / 2 or any CTF compliant reader. Also remove some ifdefs in the cli option parsing to allow printing the helpful error message with '--to-ctf' when built without babeltrace2. tools build: Fix feature checks to touch target files on success
In tools/build/feature/Makefile, test-clang-bpf-co-re.bin and test-bpftool-skeletons.bin redirected grep output but never touched or created the $@ target file upon success. Because the target file was never created on disk, Kbuild could never cache the result of the check. Consequently, Make treated the prerequisite as missing and continuously re-executed the Clang BPF backend and bpftool feature checks on every single sub-make evaluation during build startup, or on every incremental build. Refactor both feature check recipes to touch $@ on success. For test-clang-bpf-co-re.bin, group the shell pipeline within curly braces and redirect both stdout and stderr to .make.output to allow errors to be inspected and not appear in build output. List test-clang-bpf-co-re.bin's input C file as a dependency so modification triggers a rebuild. For test-bpftool-skeletons.bin, add it to the FILES list so that it will be cleaned. RTLA patches for v7.1:
- Simplify option parsing Auto-generate getopt_long() optstring for short options from long options array, avoiding the need to specify it manually and reducing the surface for mistakes. - Add unit tests Implement unit tests (make unit-tests) using libcheck, next to existing runtime tests (make check). Currently, three functions from utils.c are tested. - Add --stack-format option In addition to stopping stack pointer decoding (with -s/--stack option) on first unresolvable pointer, allow also skipping unresolvable pointers and displaying everything, configurable with a new option. - Unify number of CPUs into one global variable Use one global variable, nr_cpus, to store the number of CPUs instead of retrieving it and passing it at multiple places. - Fix behavior in various corner cases Make RTLA behave correctly in several corner cases: memory allocation failure, invalid value read from kernel side, thread creation failure, malformed time value input, and read/write failure or interruption by signal. - Improve string handling Simplify several places in the code that handle strings, including parsing of action arguments. A few new helper functions and variables are added for that purpose. - Get rid of magic numbers Few places handling paths use a magic number of 1024. Replace it with MAX_PATH and ARRAY_SIZE() macro. - Unify threshold handling Code that handles response to latency threshold is duplicated between tools, which has led to bugs in the past. Unify it into a new helper as much as possible. - Fix segfault on SIGINT during cleanup The SIGINT handler touches dynamically allocated memory. Detach it before freeing it during cleanup to prevent segmentation fault and discarding of output buffers. Also, properly document SIGINT handling while at it. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iIoEABYKADIWIQRRSw7ePDh/lE+zeZMp5XQQmuv6qgUCad4njhQccm9zdGVkdEBn b29kbWlzLm9yZwAKCRAp5XQQmuv6qoKkAP0bYgkuqvyBsplZf1Mqil7IRM3tTFni XJdkFFr6E6jS/gEAynaf7oq4gz7isvMvZZTOVcl1VflQAjLuY9ezO5LQzw0= =mR69 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-rtla-v7.1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/trace/linux-trace Pull RTLA updates from Steven Rostedt: - Simplify option parsing Auto-generate getopt_long() optstring for short options from long options array, avoiding the need to specify it manually and reducing the surface for mistakes. - Add unit tests Implement unit tests (make unit-tests) using libcheck, next to existing runtime tests (make check). Detect required target and pass it via rust_flags to the compiler.
Note that CROSS_COMPILE might be different from what rust compiler
expects, since it may omit the target vendor value, e.g.
"aarch64-linux-gnu" instead of "aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu".
Thus explicitly map supported CROSS_COMPILE values to corresponding Rust
versions, as suggested by Miguel Ojeda.
Tested using arm64 cross-compilation example from [1].

tools build: Make in-target rule robust against too long argument error
The command length of in-target scales with the depth of the directory times the number of objects in the Makefile. When there are many objects, and O=[absolute_path] is set, and the absolute_path is relatively long. It is possible that this line "$(call if_changed,$(host)ld_multi)" will report error: "make[4]: /bin/sh: Argument list too long" For example, build perf tools with O=/long/output/path Like built-in.a and *.mod rules in scripts/Makefile.build, add $(objpredix)/ by the shell command instead of by Make's builtin function. tools build: Fix feature test for rust compiler
Currently a dummy rust code is compiled to detect if the rust feature
could be enabled. It turns out that in this case rust emits a dependency
file without any external references:
/perf/feature/test-rust.d: test-rust.rs
/perf/feature/test-rust.bin: test-rust.rs
test-rust.rs:
This can lead to a situation, when rustc was removed after a successful build,
but the build process still thinks it's there and the feature is enabled on
subsequent runs.
Instead simply check the compiler presence to detect the feature, as
suggested by Arnaldo.
This way no actual test-rust.bin will be created, meaning the feature
check will not be cached and always performed. That's exactly what we
want, and the overhead of doing this every time is minimal.
Tested with multiple rounds of install/remove of the rust package.

Deferred unwinding support
--------------------------
With the kernel support [1], perf can use deferred callchains for
userspace stack trace with frame pointers like below:
$ perf record --call-graph fp,defer ...
This will be transparent to users when it comes to other commands like
perf report and perf script. They will merge the deferred callchains to
the previous samples as if they were collected together.

objtool updates for v6.19:
- klp-build livepatch module generation (Josh Poimboeuf)
Introduce new objtool features and a klp-build
script to generate livepatch modules using a
source .patch as input.
This builds on concepts from the longstanding out-of-tree
kpatch project which began in 2012 and has been used for
many years to generate livepatch modules for production kernels.
However, this is a complete rewrite which incorporates
hard-earned lessons from 12+ years of maintaining kpatch.
Key improvements compared to kpatch-build:
- Integrated with objtool: Leverages objtool's existing control-flow
graph analysis to help detect changed functions.
- Works on vmlinux.o: Supports late-linked objects, making it
compatible with LTO, IBT, and similar.
- Simplified code base: ~3k fewer lines of code.
- Upstream: No more out-of-tree #ifdef hacks, far less cruft.
- Cleaner internals: Vastly simplified logic for symbol/section/reloc
inclusion and special section extraction.
- Robust __LINE__ macro handling: Avoids false positive binary diffs
caused by the __LINE__ macro by introducing a fix-patch-lines script
which injects #line directives into the source .patch to preserve
the original line numbers at compile time.
- Disassemble code with libopcodes instead of running objdump
(Alexandre Chartre)
- Disassemble support (-d option to objtool) by Alexandre Chartre,
which supports the decoding of various Linux kernel code generation
specials such as alternatives:

The tools version of fixdep has broken dependencies. It doesn't get rebuilt if the host compiler or headers change. Build fixdep with the tools kbuild infrastructure, so fixdep runs on itself. Due to the recursive dependency, its dependency file is incomplete the very first time it gets built. In that case build it a second time to achieve fixdep inception. tools build: Don't assume libtracefs-devel is always available
perf doesn't use libtracefs and so it doesn't make sense to assume it is always available when building test-all.bin, defeating the feature check speedup it provides. The other tools/build/ users such as rtla, rv, etc call $(feature_check libtracefs) to check its availability instead of using the test-all.bin mechanism, stopping the build and asking for libtracefs-devel to be installed. Remove it from FEATURE_TESTS_BASIC to not have it as available, as noted by Ian Rogers during review. tools build: Make libperl opt-in rather than opt-out, deprecate
If libperl is installed then the perf tool build will build against
it. There appears to be limited interest in the scripting support for
perl so let's make it opt-in and deprecate it.
With this patch applied you need to add LIBPERL=1 to get libperl
support in perf - there is no warning if libperl is missing, but
building will fail if libperl is missing and the build has LIBPERL=1.
The perf version output is changed to:
```
perf build: The bfd features are opt-in, stop testing for them by default
These are leftovers noticed while updating a build container. We don't need those so that test-all.c can build and thus speed up the feature detection. perf build: detect support for libbpf's emit_strings option
This creates a config option that detects libbpf's ability to display character arrays as strings, which was just added to the BPF tree (https://git.kernel.org/bpf/bpf-next/c/87c9c79a02b4). To test this change, I built perf (from later in this patch set) with: - static libbpf (default, using source from kernel tree) - dynamic libbpf (LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1 LIBBPF_INCLUDE=/usr/local/include) For both the static and dynamic versions, I used headers with and without the ".emit_strings" option. I verified that of the four resulting binaries, the two with ".emit_strings" would successfully record BPF_METADATA events, and the two without wouldn't. All four binaries would successfully display BPF_METADATA events, because the relevant bit of libbpf code is only used during "perf record".
