Char/Misc/IIO/etc driver update for 7.3-rc1
Here is the big set of char, misc, iio, counter, fpga, and other small
driver subsystems for 7.3-rc1.
Overall, due to some driver removals we only added a bit more code than
removed, which was a nice change. Highlights in this merge request are:
- Loads of IIO driver updates and additions
- binder driver updates (more on that below...)
- Removal of the SGI XP and GRU drivers as they are not used anymore
and turn out to be pretty insecure overall
- Removal of the obsolete ibmasm driver as it's not being used anymore
- Coresight driver updates and additions
- Mei driver udpates
- Counter driver updates
- FPGA driver updates
- ICC driver updates
- lots and lots of other tiny driver updates to resolve reported
issues
All of these have been in linux-next for a while, with the only reported
issues being some major merge conflicts. Miguel pointed out some of
these with the Rust tree merge, which is the majority of them. I'll
follow up with a diffstat of the merge resolution I made against your
most recent tree, which works for me.

Driver core changes for 7.3-rc1
- container_of:
- Apply typeof_member(), remove the local __mptr variable to eliminate
variable shadowing warnings on nested container_of() calls, and remove
unnecessary parentheses.
- core:
- Add driver name to probe debug print for initcall_debug.
- Avoid repeatedly printing the same 'Fixed dependency cycle' log.
- Unwind device_add() on attribute creation failure in
attribute_container_add_class_device().
- Remove statistics group if encryption group creation fails in
transport_add_class_device().
- debugfs:
- Fix lockdown check for mmap_prepare().
- Warn if file creation failed due to uninitialized debugfs.
- device property:
- Implement fw_devlink support for software nodes by adding
software_node_add_links(), which creates fwnode links from DEV_PROP_REF
properties to enable automatic probe ordering. Add kunit-managed fwnode
helpers and test coverage.
- Fix infinite loop in fwnode_for_each_child_node() when the secondary fwnode
has more than one child. Add test cases.
- Fix out-of-bounds access in software_node_get_reference_args() when called
with index -1 (UINT_MAX).
- Refactor to use RAII approach with __free().
- Add Bartosz Golaszewski as software node reviewer.
- firmware loader:
- Fix race where a sysfs fallback request can complete before being queued as
pending, leading to a use-after-free on the next fallback request.
- Reject 0-size built-in firmware and fail the build on empty firmware files
in CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE.
- kobject:
- Provide __KOBJ_ATTR() and __KOBJ_ATTR_RO/WO() initialization macros and
allow the constification of kobject attributes, enabling them to reside in
read-only memory.
- platform:
- Provide platform_device_set_of_node(), platform_device_set_fwnode(), and
platform_device_set_of_node_from_dev() helpers that encapsulate firmware
node reference counting for dynamically allocated platform devices. Convert
all in-tree users that manually assigned dev.of_node or dev.fwnode, fixing a
pre-existing refcount bug in powermac. Switch to counting references of all
firmware node types, not only OF nodes.
- Unify the release path for dynamically allocated platform devices by
removing platform_device_release_full(). Amend the fwnode setter API
contract to warn if a primary software node is overwritten. Add KUnit tests
for correct software node removal on device unregistration.
- Rust:
- Auxiliary:
- Add registration_data_with() closure-based API for invariant ForLt types.
- Debugfs:
- Migrate BinaryWriter and BinaryReaderMut trait requirements from
kernel::transmute traits to zerocopy traits.
- Device:
- Add BoundInternal device context and InternalBoundContext trait for bus
abstractions that need internal access to a bound device.
- Make the lifetime on Core and CoreInternal invariant to prevent coercion
to shorter lifetimes.
- Devres:
- Fix race between concurrent revokers where the losing revoker could return
before the winning revoker finished dropping the inner data, causing
use-after-free.
- Ensure revocation is complete before the device finishes unbinding by
making the synchronization bidirectional.
- Add DevresLt<F: ForLt>, a wrapper around Devres that shortens 'static back
to the caller's borrow scope. Implement ForLt and CovariantForLt for Bar,
IoMem, and ExclusiveIoMem.
- Driver:
- Switch from index-based to pointer-based device ID info lookup, storing
static references in driver_data. Centralize device ID handling in
device_id.rs, removing the open-coded ACPI/OF matching logic and duplicate
ID table from driver.rs.
- I/O:
- Make I/O regions typed (with a dynamically-sized Region type for the
existing untyped case), create view types representing subregions of a
mapped I/O region, and add io_project!() for safely creating subviews.
- Split Io into a base trait (IoBase) and an extension trait (Io) with a
blanket implementation, preventing implementers from overriding provided
methods that unsafe code relies on.
- Add a SysMem backend for shared system memory with volatile access, and
make Coherent implement Io via an I/O view type. Add IoSysMap as sum type
of Mmio and SysMem. Add copying methods (memcpy_{from,to}io()) and
read_val()/write_val() for typed access.
- Replace dma_read!()/dma_write!() with io_read!()/io_write!() for
primitives and copying methods for aggregates; drop the old macros.
Convert nova-core to use I/O projection.
- Fix internal shortcut rule dispatch in the register!() macro, remove
unused rule arguments, and use path fragments for alias destinations.
- IRQ:
- Make irq::Registration compatible with lifetime-bound drivers by
removing the 'static bound on Handler/ThreadedHandler and
replacing Devres<RegistrationInner> with direct
request_irq()/free_irq() calls. Handlers can now directly own
lifetime-bound device resources.
- PCI:
- Convert IrqVectorRegistration to a lifetime-annotated owning type,
giving drivers explicit control over the allocation lifetime.
IrqVector embeds a resolved IrqRequest, making the conversion
infallible. Remove the redundant
request_irq()/request_threaded_irq() wrappers from pci::Device.
- Add pci_irq_type() C helper and expose it via irq_type() on
IrqVectorRegistration and IrqVector, returning PCI_IRQ_MSIX, PCI_IRQ_MSI,
or PCI_IRQ_INTX.
- Mark pci::Device refcount methods inline.
- Serdev:
- Add Rust abstractions for the serial device bus, including serdev::Driver
trait, serdev::Device wrapping struct serdev_device, and serdev::Adapter
implementing RegistrationOps. Includes a sample driver. Markus Probst
takes over as serdev maintainer for both C and Rust code.
- Misc:
- Split ForLt into a base trait (providing the Of<'a> GAT) and an unsafe
CovariantForLt subtrait guaranteeing covariance, enabling invariant types
(e.g. those containing Mutex<&'bound T>) to participate in the ForLt
abstraction.
- Fix Coherent read past EOF returning -ERANGE instead of zero.
- Fix firmware example UB by avoiding null-pointer ARef.
- misc:
- Avoid iattr allocation in kernfs listxattr by using kernfs_iattrs_noalloc().
- Unregister SoC bus on early device registration failure.
- Remove unused DMA_FENCE_TRACE Kconfig symbol.
- Fix /sys/module path in comment.
- Refactor ISA bus init to remove nested blocks.
- Remove redundant nodemask clears in numa_init().
- Add kernel-doc for fwnode_operations and sys_soc.h, mark internal property
data as private for kernel-doc, and add property.h/fwnode.h to driver-api
infrastructure docs.
- Add MAINTAINERS entry for sys_soc.h.

rust: introduce abstractions for fwctl
Introduce safe Rust wrappers around struct fwctl_device and struct fwctl_uctx. This lets Rust drivers register fwctl devices and implement firmware RPC callbacks through a typed trait interface. The abstraction keeps lifetime and reference-count handling inside the wrapper, exposes pinned per-FD user contexts to drivers, and validates the layout assumptions required by the C fwctl allocation model. Allocation sizes are padded so the kmalloc-backed C allocations also satisfy Rust alignment requirements. Registration owns driver private data with a lifetime tied to the bound parent device and verifies the parent identity before registration. Callbacks access that data through a higher-ranked closure, preventing its erased lifetime from escaping, while Device remains only the refcounted fwctl object. This avoids requiring Rust drop glue from the fwctl_device release path after unregister or module teardown. RPC callbacks receive typed scope information, a mutable request/response buffer, and the userspace output-buffer size. Response pointer conversion, length validation, and raw output-length handling remain inside the abstraction. Add the Rust sources to the FWCTL MAINTAINERS entry and add myself as the maintainer for the Rust abstractions. rust: io: gate ioremap/iounmap on CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM
s390 does not provide ioremap()/iounmap() when CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM is not
set (which requires CONFIG_PCI on that architecture). This causes a
build failure with Rust enabled on e.g. s390 allnoconfig:
In file included from rust/helpers/helpers.c:68:
rust/helpers/io.c:8:9: error: call to undeclared function 'ioremap'; ISO C99 and later do not support implicit function declarations
[-Wimplicit-function-declaration]
8 | return ioremap(offset, size);
| ^
rust/helpers/io.c:19:2: error: call to undeclared function 'iounmap'; ISO C99 and later do not support implicit function declarations
[-Wimplicit-function-declaration]
19 | iounmap(addr);
Guard the C helpers behind #ifdef CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM and cfg-gate the Rust
io::mem module, such that IoMem, ExclusiveIoMem and IoRequest are not
available without CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM.
Note that the C API is inconsistent about this. For instance,
devm_ioremap() has no stub and produces a link failure without
CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM, whereas devm_platform_ioremap_resource() provides an
inline stub returning -EINVAL.
The approach taken here (compile-time gating) matches the former, which
is slightly more appropriate since any driver performing MMIO currently
requires CONFIG_HAS_IOMEM.
Ideally, s390 should provide ioremap()/iounmap() stubs unconditionally
(as UML already does), removing the need for any config gating as
discussed in [1]; a follow-up patch for s390 is expected.

dma-resv: Fix undefined symbol when CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER is disabled
When building with LLVM=1 for architectures like powerpc where
CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER is not enabled, the build fails with:
ld.lld: error: undefined symbol: dma_resv_reset_max_fences
>>> referenced by helpers.c
>>> rust/helpers/helpers.o:(rust_helper_dma_resv_unlock)
The issue occurs because:
1. CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES=y is enabled
2. CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER is not enabled
3. dma_resv_reset_max_fences() is declared in the header when
CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES is set
4. But the function is only compiled in drivers/dma-buf/dma-resv.c,
which is only built when CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER is enabled
5. Rust helpers call dma_resv_unlock() which calls
dma_resv_reset_max_fences(), causing an undefined symbol
Fix this by compiling `dma-resv.c` file only when CONFIG_DMA_SHARED_BUFFER
is enabled.

rust: add basic serial device bus abstractions

rust: netlink: add raw netlink abstraction
This implements a safe and relatively simple API over the netlink API, that allows you to add different attributes to a netlink message and broadcast it. As the first user of this API only makes use of broadcast, only broadcast messages are supported here. This API is intended to be safe and to be easy to use in *generated* code. This is because netlink is generally used with yaml files that describe the underlying API, and the python generator outputs C code (or, soon, Rust code) that lets you use the API more easily. So for example, if there is a string field, the code generator will output a method that internall calls `put_string()` with the right attr type. rust: io: add copying methods
One feature that was lost from the old `dma_read!` and `dma_write!` when
moving to `io_read!` and `io_write!` was the ability to read/write a large
structs. However, the semantics was unclear to begin with, as there was no
guarantee about their atomicity even for structs that were small enough to
fit in u32. Re-introduce the capability in the form of copying methods.
dma_read!(foo, bar) -> io_project!(foo, bar).copy_read()
dma_write!(foo, bar, baz) -> io_project!(foo, bar).copy_write(baz)
Model these semantics after memcpy so user has clear expectation of lack of
atomicity. As an additional benefit of this change, this now works for MMIO
as well by mapping them to `memcpy_{from,to}io`.
For slices which is DST so the `copy_read` and `copy_write` API above can't
work, add `copy_from_slice` and `copy_to_slice` to copy from/to normal
memory.

cred: delete task_euid()
task_euid() is a very weird operation. You can see how weird it is by grepping for task_euid() - binder is its only user. task_euid() obtains the objective effective UID - it looks at the credentials of the task for purposes of acting on it as an object, but then accesses the effective UID (which the credentials.7 man page describes as "[...] used by the kernel to determine the permissions that the process will have when accessing shared resources [...]"). Since usage in Binder has now been removed, get rid of the resulting dead code. Changes to the zh_CN translation was carried out with the help of Gemini and Google Translate, and since adjusted as per Alex Shi's feedback. Driver core changes for 7.2-rc1
- deferred probe:
- Fix race where deferred probe timeout work could be permanently
canceled by using mod_delayed_work()
- Fix missing jiffies conversion in deferred_probe_extend_timeout()
- Guard timeout extension with delayed_work_pending() to prevent
premature firing
- Use system_percpu_wq instead of the deprecated system_wq
- Update deferred_probe_timeout documentation
- device:
- Replace direct struct device bitfield access (can_match, dma_iommu,
dma_skip_sync, dma_ops_bypass, state_synced, dma_coherent,
of_node_reused, offline, offline_disabled) with flag-based
accessors using bit operations
- Reject devices with unregistered buses
- Delete unused DEVICE_ATTR_PREALLOC()
- Add low-level device attribute macros with const show/store
callbacks, allowing device attributes to reside in read-only memory
- Move core device attributes to read-only memory
- Constify group array pointers in driver_add_groups() /
driver_remove_groups(), struct bus_type, and struct device_driver
- device property:
- Fix fwnode reference leak in fwnode_graph_get_endpoint_by_id()
- Initialize all fields of fwnode_handle in fwnode_init()
- Provide swnode_get()/swnode_put() wrappers around kobject_get/put()
- Allow passing struct software_node_ref_args pointers directly to
PROPERTY_ENTRY_REF()
- driver_override:
- Migrate amba, cdx, vmbus, and rpmsg to the generic driver_override
infrastructure, fixing a UAF from unsynchronized access to
driver_override in bus match() callbacks
- Remove the now-unused driver_set_override()
- firmware loader:
- Fix recursive lock deadlock in device_cache_fw_images() when async
work falls back to synchronous execution
- Fix device reference leak in firmware_upload_register()
- platform:
- Pass KBUILD_MODNAME through the platform driver registration macro
to create module symlinks in sysfs for built-in drivers; move
module_kset initialization to a pure_initcall and tegra cbb
registration to core_initcall to ensure correct ordering
- Pass THIS_MODULE implicitly through a coresight_init_driver() macro
- sysfs:
- Upgrade OOB write detection in sysfs_kf_seq_show() from printk to
WARN
- Add return value clamping to sysfs_kf_read()
- Rust:
- ACPI:
- Fix missing match data for PRP0001 by exporting
acpi_of_match_device()
- Auxiliary:
- Replace drvdata() with dedicated registration data on
auxiliary_device. drvdata() exposed the driver's bus device
private data beyond the driver's own scope, creating ordering
constraints and forcing the data to outlive all registrations
that access it. Registration data is instead scoped structurally
to the Registration object, making lifecycle ordering enforced
by construction rather than convention.
- Rust-native device driver lifetimes (HRT):
- Allow Rust device drivers to carry a lifetime parameter on their
bus device private data, tied to the device binding scope -- the
interval during which a bus device is bound to a driver. Device
resources like pci::Bar<'a> and IoMem<'a> can be stored directly
in the driver's bus device private data with a lifetime bounded
by the binding scope, so the compiler enforces at build time that
they do not outlive the binding. This removes Devres indirection
from every access site and eliminates try_access() failure paths
in destructors.
Bus driver traits use a Generic Associated Type (GAT)
Data<'bound> to introduce the lifetime on the private data,
rather than parameterizing the Driver trait itself. Auxiliary
registration data, where the lifetime is not introduced by a
trait callback but must be threaded through Registration, uses
the ForLt trait (a type-level abstraction for types generic over
a lifetime).
- Misc:
- Fix DT overlayed devices not probing by reverting the broken
treewide overlay fix and re-running fw_devlink consumer pickup when
an overlay is applied to a bound device
- Use root_device_register() for faux bus root device; add sanity
check for failed bus init
- Fix dev_has_sync_state() data race with READ_ONCE() and move it to
base.h
- Avoid spurious device_links warning when removing a device while
its supplier is unbinding
- Switch ISA bus to dynamic root device
- Fix suspicious RCU usage in kernfs_put()
- Remove devcoredump exit callback
- Constify devfreq_event_class

Registration data is instead scoped structurally to the
Registration object, making lifecycle ordering enforced by
construction rather than convention.
- Rust-native device driver lifetimes (HRT):
Allow Rust device drivers to carry a lifetime parameter on their
bus device private data, tied to the device binding scope -- the
interval during which a bus device is bound to a driver. Device
resources like pci::Bar<'a> and IoMem<'a> can be stored directly in
the driver's bus device private data with a lifetime bounded by the
binding scope, so the compiler enforces at build time that they do
not outlive the binding. This removes Devres indirection from every
access site and eliminates try_access() failure paths in
destructors.
Bus driver traits use a Generic Associated Type (GAT) Data<'bound>
to introduce the lifetime on the private data, rather than
parameterizing the Driver trait itself. Auxiliary registration
data, where the lifetime is not introduced by a trait callback but
must be threaded through Registration, uses the ForLt trait (a
type-level abstraction for types generic over a lifetime).
Misc:
- Constify devfreq_event_class"

rust: helpers: Add memchr wrapper for string operations
Add a dedicated string helper file with a memchr wrapper that uses the kernel's instrumented memchr() function to ensure KASAN and FORTIFY_SOURCE protections are preserved for Rust code. uaccess: unify inline vs outline copy_{from,to}_user() selection
The kernel allows arches to select between inline and outline
implementations of the copy_{from,to}_user() by defining individual
INLINE_COPY_FROM_USER and INLINE_COPY_TO_USER, correspondingly. However,
all arches enable or disable them always together.
Without the real use-case for one helper being inlined while the other
outlined, having independent controls is excessive and error prone.
Switch the codebase to the single unified INLINE_COPY_USER control.

rust: uaccess: use INLINE_COPY_TO_USER to guard copy_to_user()
Patch series "uaccess: unify inline vs outline copy_{from,to}_user()
selection", v2.
The first patch of the series fixes rust/uaccess coppy_to_user() wrapper
guarded with INLINE_COPY_FROM_USER. The 2nd patch switches codebase to
the unified INLINE_COPY_USER. And the last patch cleans up ifdefery in
the include/linux/uaccess.h
This patch (of 3):
The copy_to_user() rust helper is only needed when the main kernel inlines
the function. It is controlled by INLINE_COPY_TO_USER, but the rust
helper is protected with INLINE_COPY_FROM_USER.
Fix that.

drm/gpuvm: rust: add RUST_DRM_GPUVM option to Kconfig
Since Rust uses GPUVM via the kernel crate, which is built-in, the GPUVM module must also be built-in to use GPUVM from Rust. Adjust the Kconfig settings accordingly. rust: gpuvm: add GpuVm::obtain()
This provides a mechanism to create (or look up) VMBO instances, which represent the mapping between GPUVM and GEM objects. The GpuVmBoRegistered<T> type can be considered like ARef<GpuVm<T>>, except that no way to increment the refcount is provided. The GpuVmBoAlloc<T> type is more akin to a pre-allocated GpuVmBo<T>, so it's not really a GpuVmBo<T> yet. Its destructor could call drm_gpuvm_bo_destroy_not_in_lists(), but as the type is currently private and never called anywhere, this perf optimization does not need to happen now. Pre-allocating and obtaining the gpuvm_bo object is exposed as a single step. This could theoretically be a problem if one wanted to call drm_gpuvm_bo_obtain_prealloc() during the fence signalling critical path, but that's not a possibility because: 1. Adding the BO to the extobj list requires the resv lock, so it cannot happen during the fence signalling critical path. 2. obtain() requires that the BO is not in the extobj list, so obtain() must be called before adding the BO to the extobj list. Thus, drm_gpuvm_bo_obtain_prealloc() cannot be called during the fence signalling critical path. (For extobjs at least.) rust: drm: add base GPUVM immediate mode abstraction
Add a GPUVM abstraction to be used by Rust GPU drivers. GPUVM keeps track of a GPU's virtual address (VA) space and manages the corresponding virtual mappings represented by "GPU VA" objects. It also keeps track of the gem::Object<T> used to back the mappings through GpuVmBo<T>. This abstraction is only usable by drivers that wish to use GPUVM in immediate mode. This allows us to build the locking scheme into the API design. It means that the GEM mutex is used for the GEM gpuva list, and that the resv lock is used for the extobj list. The evicted list is not yet used in this version. This abstraction provides a special handle called the UniqueRefGpuVm, which is a wrapper around ARef<GpuVm> that provides access to the interval tree. Generally, all changes to the address space requires mutable access to this unique handle. rust: ACPI: fix missing match data for PRP0001
Export `acpi_of_match_device` function and use it to match the of device
table against ACPI PRP0001 in Rust.
This fixes id_info being None on ACPI PRP0001 devices.
Using `device_get_match_data` is not possible, because Rust stores an
index in the of device id instead of a data pointer. This was done this
way to provide a convenient and obvious API for drivers, which can be
evaluated in const context without the use of any unstable language
features.

rust: helpers: #define __rust_helper
Because of LLVM inling checks, it's generally not possible to inline a C helper into Rust code, even with LTO: * LLVM doesn't want to inline functions compiled with `-fno-delete-null-pointer-checks` with code compiled without. The C CGUs all have this enabled and Rust CGUs don't. Inlining is okay since this is one of the hardening features that does not change the ABI, and we shouldn't have null pointer dereferences in these helpers. * LLVM doesn't want to inline functions with different list of builtins. C side has `-fno-builtin-wcslen`; `wcslen` is not a Rust builtin, so they should be compatible, but LLVM does not perform inlining due to attributes mismatch. * clang and Rust doesn't have the exact target string. Clang generates `+cmov,+cx8,+fxsr` but Rust doesn't enable them (in fact, Rust will complain if `-Ctarget-feature=+cmov,+cx8,+fxsr` is used). x86-64 always enable these features, so they are in fact the same target string, but LLVM doesn't understand this and so inlining is inhibited. This can be bypassed with `--ignore-tti-inline-compatible`, but this is a hidden option. To fix this, we can add __always_inline on every helper, which skips these LLVM inlining checks. For this purpose, introduce a new __rust_helper macro that needs to be added to every helper. Most helpers already have __rust_helper specified, but there are a few missing. The only consequence of this is that those specific helpers do not get inlined. rust: sync: atomic: Add Atomic<*{mut,const} T> support
Atomic pointer support is an important piece of synchronization algorithm, e.g. RCU, hence provide the support for that. Note that instead of relying on atomic_long or the implementation of `Atomic<usize>`, a new set of helpers (atomic_ptr_*) is introduced for atomic pointer specifically, this is because ptr2int casting would lose the provenance of a pointer and even though in theory there are a few tricks the provenance can be restored, it'll still be a simpler implementation if C could provide atomic pointers directly. The side effects of this approach are: we don't have the arithmetic and logical operations for pointers yet and the current implementation only works on ARCH_SUPPORTS_ATOMIC_RMW architectures, but these are implementation issues and can be added later.
