Bootconfig updates for v7.3:
- bootconfig: Support build-time command line rendering for embedded bootconfig
. bootconfig: render descendant keys when xbc_snprint_cmdline() root has a
value. Fix xbc_snprint_cmdline() to render descendant keys when the root
has both a value and subkeys, and treats empty subtrees correctly.
. bootconfig: render embedded bootconfig as a kernel cmdline at build time.
Add build-time pipeline using tools/bootconfig -C to render the embedded
bootconfig "kernel" subtree into .init.rodata as a cmdline string.
. bootconfig: clean build-time tools/bootconfig from make clean.
. bootconfig: add xbc_prepend_embedded_cmdline() helper.
Add helper to prepend embedded bootconfig cmdline into boot_command_line
early before parse_early_param().
. x86/setup: prepend embedded bootconfig cmdline before parse_early_param.
Wire early prepend helper in x86 setup_arch() so early_param handlers see
values from the embedded bootconfig. (So this feature is currently x86 only)
. bootconfig: skip runtime kernel.* render once prepended early.
Avoid duplicating "kernel" keys in setup_boot_config().
. init/main.c: use bootconfig_cmdline_requested() for the runtime opt-in.
Refactor setup_boot_config() to share bootconfig_cmdline_requested().
. Documentation: bootconfig: document build-time cmdline rendering.
Document CONFIG_CMDLINE_FROM_BOOTCONFIG usage, requirements, and precedence.

to use consistent diagnostic logging and assertions, and enforces
standardized MAP_FAILED return checks for mmap() calls across the tests.
- The 18 patch series "mm/damon: optimize out nr_accesses_bp" from SJ
Park replaces the error-prone, continuously updated nr_accesses_bp field
in damon_region with an on-demand moving sum function
(damon_nr_accesses_mvsum()), reducing structure memory overhead and
avoiding state corruption bugs.
- The 6 patch series "Open HugeTLB allocation routine for more generic
use" from Ackerley Tng decouples HugeTLB folio allocation from VMA
dependencies by introducing hugetlb_alloc_folio(), enabling subsystems
like guest_memfd to allocate HugeTLB folios without standard VMA
reservations or pseudo-VMAs.
- The 3 patch series "mm/damon: provide pseudo moving sum probe_hits"
from SJ Park integrates DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter into the
pseudo moving sum infrastructure, enabling real-time, online monitoring
without waiting for full aggregation intervals.
- The 18 patch series "mm: Some cleanups for page allocator APIs" from
Brendan Jackman simplifies and refactors the page allocator entry points
and flags by unifying allocation paths, adding internal alloc_flags
arguments, and eliminating redundant __ prefixed alloc_pages variants.
- The 5 patch series "Fix incorrect access of hugetlb pte entries" from
Dev Jain enforces the consistent use of huge_ptep_get() instead of
ptep_get() for HugeTLB entries and fixes an unaligned address issue in
arm64's huge_ptep_get() implementation.
- The 8 patch series "mm/damon: validate all parameters in the core"
from SJ Park consolidates parameter validation into the DAMON core
specifically within damon_start() and damon_commit_ctx() to centralize
error checking, eliminate caller-side redundant checks and to improve
maintenance efficiency.
- The 3 patch series "tools/mm/page_owner_sort: fix filtering and
cleanup issues" from Yichong Chen renames is_need() to filter_record()
for clearer return semantics, fixes per-record allocation memory leaks
and bounds output copies in search_pattern() to address an existing
buffer issue.
- The 4 patch series "memcg: bail out reclaim when memcg is dying" from
Jiayuan Chen mitigates a system-wide stall which occurs when a cgroup is
removed while one of its memory control files is doing synchronous
reclaim.
- The 5 patch series "mm/memory-failure: add panic option for
unrecoverable pages" from Breno Leitao introduces an opt-in
vm.panic_on_unrecoverable_memory_failure sysctl that immediately panics
the kernel on unrecoverable memory errors in kernel-owned pages to
preserve error context and prevent delayed, silent data corruption.
- The 11 patch series "mm/damon: refactor damon_{start,stop,commit}()
for simple error handling" from SJ Park refactors the DAMON core API
functions to guarantee that all contexts are fully stopped when
damon_start(), damon_stop(), or damon_commit() fail, eliminating the
need for complex and error-prone caller-side cleanup code.
- The 5 patch series "Keep tail page private zero at free and folio
split" from Zi Yan adds checks to ensure tail_page->private is zero when
freeing compound or high-order pages and when promoting tail pages
during large folio splits. By validating these fields at free and split
time, it allows the removal of redundant private field clearing inside
prep_compound_tail().
- The 4 patch series "mm: drop redundant lru_add_drain in anon folio
reuse paths" from Barry Song eliminates redundant lru_add_drain() calls
in wp_can_reuse_anon_folio() and do_swap_page() to reduce LRU lock
contention and system overhead.
By validating folio refcounts against the LRU cache before draining
and removing unnecessary drains in the swap path, it achieves up to a
30.5% reduction in drain calls during heavy swap workloads.
- The 3 patch series "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations" from
Jianyue Wu reorganizes folio LRU and swap code by relocating
page-cluster state to mm/swap_state.c, renaming mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c,
and moving MM-internal reclaim declarations into mm/internal.h.
- The 15 patch series "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest
memory" from Kiryl Shutsemau adds userfaultfd support for tracking the
working set of VM guest memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and
reclaim cold ones to tiered or remote storage.
- The 10 patch series "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part
2)" from David Hildenbrand removes the remaining pieces of
CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE, performing some smaller cleanups around
freeing of reserved vmemmap pages on the way.
- The 7 patch series "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter
commits" from SJ Park ensures that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter
is properly updated when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime,
matching the behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and
renames existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to
probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to
maintain measurement accuracy.
- The 3 patch series "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm"
from xu xin resolves a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck
where thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended
lock contention. By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap
walk, it reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms
down to under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes
under memory pressure.
- The 3 patch series "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h"
from Mike Rapoport splits declarations related to mm_init, memblock,
vmalloc and sparse into new headers.
- The 2 patch series "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()"
from xu xin applies the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm()
to collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during
KSM memory error handling. It hoists loop-invariant address
initialization and restricts the anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to
a targeted page offset range, reducing redundant checks and improving
lookup efficiency.
- The 3 patch series "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and
KSM tests" from Sayali Patil fixes issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM
selftest categories that can report failures when the prerequisites for
the tests are not satisfied.
- The 19 patch series "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only
monitoring" from SJ Park introduces attribute-weighted region management
in DAMON, allowing users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as
page sizes or cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring.
By assigning weights to attribute probes, DAMON can completely disable
access tracking and adjust monitoring regions based on weighted
probe-hit counters to optimize monitoring quality for attribute-focused
workloads.
- The 8 patch series "mm/hmm: Add mmap lock-drop support for
userfaultfd-backed mappings" from Stanislav Kinsburskii extends
hmm_range_fault() to support userfaultfd-backed regions by allowing the
mmap lock to be dropped during fault handling via a new
hmm_range_fault_locked() helper.
By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock
release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd regions
while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers.
- The 33 patch series "mm: make VMA page offset handling more
consistent" from Lorenzo Stoakes cleans up and standardizes how
vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and manipulated across file-backed and
anonymous mappings in the kernel.
It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(),
vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while renaming
rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their functionality.
These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that will
unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd folios.
- The 3 patch series "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks"
from Usama Arif addresses kernel panics and state corruption caused by
MM walk callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries
created during HMM migrations.
It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock() properly
recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present THP or a
standard migration entry.
- The 5 patch series "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" from Dev Jain
refactors try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb, anonymous-lazyfree,
and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated functions, laying the
structural groundwork for batched anonymous large folio unmapping.
- The 4 patch series "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and
additions" from Song Hu fixes typos and fills in missing entries in the
DAMON sysfs ABI document.
- The 10 patch series "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs"
from Gregory Price introduces an atomic sysfs state attribute and
supporting DAX/MM infrastructure to prevent userland races when
offlining and removing entire memory regions.
By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it
enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward
compatibility.
- The 13 patch series "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t"
from Lorenzo Stoakes continues transitioning the kernel from the
deprecated vm_flags_t type to vma_flags_t across core memory management
infrastructure.
It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(),
unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like
mlock, mprotect, and mremap.
- The 2 patch series "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" from
xu xin refactors mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify
duplicate slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds
code documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must
remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions.
- The 10 patch series "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields"
from SJ Park cleans up DAMON core structures by consistently marking
internal-only fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper
direct access from outer layers.
It enforces encapsulation across core structures including
damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to
interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct
members.
- The 6 patch series "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL
de-ref and races" from SJ Park addresses potential infinite loops, NULL
dereferences, and race conditions identified in DAMON.
It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a
NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring
accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races.
- The 2 patch series "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on
RT/UP" from Brendan Jackman fixes an NMI safety flaw in
__free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT
kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks via non-PCP or isolated
migration paths.
It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation
risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory
hotplug or large allocation frees.
- The 4 patch series "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent
cleanups" from Brendan Jackman cleans up and updates page allocator
nomenclature, documentation, and debug assertions.
It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming
convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from
high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete VM_BUG_ON()
assertions in allocation paths.
- The 3 patch series "mm/mseal: further cleanups" from Lorenzo Stoakes
refactors and simplifies the mseal implementation by clarifying API
boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity.
It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a
dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO, eliminates
mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only to
current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no
functional changes intended.
- The 4 patch series "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up
per-node proactive reclaim" from Ridong Chen resolves reclaim behavior
bugs and cleans up function parameters across memory reclaim paths.
It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so
unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page
cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead of
collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete gfp_mask
parameter from __node_reclaim().
- The 6 patch series "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" from Kefeng Wang
cleans up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it removes
the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP pages as
non-resident.
- The 2 patch series "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants"
from Kiryl Shutsemau implements two trivial cleanups in the folio split
API.
- The 7 patch series "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit
exec expectation bugs" from SJ Park resolves minor operational and
testing bugs in DAMON identified by Sashiko. It initializes the
damos->last_applied field to prevent occasional efficiency degradation
and fixes invalid memory accesses in DAMON KUnit tests during test
failure handling.
- The 3 patch series "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" from Jinjiang Tu
cleans up and refactors stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags
without altering functionality.
It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag
bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*()
helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling.
- The 3 patch series "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" from Dev Jain
extends batched folio unmapping support to file folios within
userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching capabilities
to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed().
This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in
try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control
flow and complexity.
- The 3 patch series "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up
early_ioremap_reset()" from Sang-Heon Jeon clarifies and cleans up the
architecture-specific usage of __late_set_fixmap() and
__late_clear_fixmap() after early_ioremap_reset().
It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset()
must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset calls
in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures.
- The 4 patch series "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" from
Johannes Weiner addresses severe performance regressions, swap storms,
and spurious OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure
in Meta production.
It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation
requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at
pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather
than spinning unproductively.
- The 2 patch series "zram: lockmap tweaks" from Sebastian Siewior
optimizes and fixes lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating
per-entry lockmaps and isolating lock classes across multiple instances.
It reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map instances
with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic lock_class_key
to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports when different zram
devices are backed by distinct filesystems.

userspace event notifications and refactor v1-only eventfd handling
into mm/memcontrol-v1.c to reduce memory overhead and code complexity
- "selftests/mm: refactor pkey helpers and fix mmap error handling"
(Hongfu Li)
Refactor pkeys shared tracing and assertion helpers into a common
file, unify protection key selftests to use consistent diagnostic
logging and assertions, and enforce standardized MAP_FAILED return
checks for mmap() calls across the tests
- "mm/damon: optimize out nr_accesses_bp" (SJ Park)
Replace the error-prone, continuously updated nr_accesses_bp field in
damon_region with an on-demand moving sum function, reducing
structure memory overhead and avoiding state corruption bugs
- "Open HugeTLB allocation routine for more generic use" (Ackerley Tng)
Decouple HugeTLB folio allocation from VMA dependencies by
introducing hugetlb_alloc_folio(), enabling subsystems like
guest_memfd to allocate HugeTLB folios without standard VMA
reservations or pseudo-VMAs
- "mm/damon: provide pseudo moving sum probe_hits" (SJ Park)
Integrate DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter into the pseudo moving
sum infrastructure, enabling real-time, online monitoring without
waiting for full aggregation intervals
- "mm: Some cleanups for page allocator APIs" (Brendan Jackman)
Simplify and refactor the page allocator entry points and flags by
unifying allocation paths, adding internal alloc_flags arguments, and
eliminating redundant __ prefixed alloc_pages variants.
- "Fix incorrect access of hugetlb pte entries" (Dev Jain)
Enforce the consistent use of huge_ptep_get() instead of ptep_get()
for HugeTLB entries and fixes an unaligned address issue in arm64's
huge_ptep_get() implementation
- "mm/damon: validate all parameters in the core" (SJ Park)
Consolidate parameter validation into the DAMON core specifically
within damon_start() and damon_commit_ctx() to centralize error
checking, eliminate caller-side redundant checks and to improve
maintenance efficiency
- "tools/mm/page_owner_sort: fix filtering and cleanup issues" (Yichong
Chen)
Rename is_need() to filter_record() for clearer return semantics, fix
per-record allocation memory leaks and bound output copies in
search_pattern() to address an existing buffer issue
- "memcg: bail out reclaim when memcg is dying" (Jiayuan Chen)
Mitigate a system-wide stall which occurs when a cgroup is removed
while one of its memory control files is doing synchronous reclaim
- "mm/memory-failure: add panic option for unrecoverable pages" (Breno
Leitao)
Introduce an opt-in vm.panic_on_unrecoverable_memory_failure sysctl
that immediately panics the kernel on unrecoverable memory errors in
kernel-owned pages to preserve error context and prevent delayed,
silent data corruption
- "mm/damon: refactor damon_{start,stop,commit}() for simple error
handling" (SJ Park)
Refactor the DAMON core API functions to guarantee that all contexts
are fully stopped when damon_start(), damon_stop(), or damon_commit()
fail, eliminating the need for complex and error-prone caller-side
cleanup code
- "Keep tail page private zero at free and folio split" (Zi Yan)
Add checks to ensure tail_page->private is zero when freeing compound
or high-order pages and when promoting tail pages during large folio
splits. By validating these fields at free and split time, it allows
the removal of redundant private field clearing inside
prep_compound_tail()
- "mm: drop redundant lru_add_drain in anon folio reuse paths" (Barry
Song)
Eliminate redundant lru_add_drain() calls in
wp_can_reuse_anon_folio() and do_swap_page() to reduce LRU lock
contention and system overhead
By validating folio refcounts against the LRU cache before draining
and removing unnecessary drains in the swap path, it achieves up to a
30.5% reduction in drain calls during heavy swap workloads
- "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations" (Jianyue Wu)
Reorganize folio LRU and swap code by relocating page-cluster state
to mm/swap_state.c, renaming mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c, and moving
MM-internal reclaim declarations into mm/internal.h.
- "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest memory" (Kiryl
Shutsemau)
Add userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of VM guest
memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and reclaim cold ones to
tiered or remote storage
- "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 2)" (David
Hildenbrand)
Remove the remaining pieces of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE,
performing some smaller cleanups around freeing of reserved vmemmap
pages on the way.
- "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter commits" (SJ Park)
Ensure that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter is properly updated
when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime, matching the
behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and renames
existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to
probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to
maintain measurement accuracy.
- "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm" (xu xin)
Resolve a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck where
thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended lock
contention.
By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap walk, it
reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms down to
under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes under
memory pressure.
- "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h" (Mike Rapoport)
Split declarations related to mm_init, memblock, vmalloc and sparse
into new headers
- "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()" (xu xin)
Apply the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm() to
collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during
KSM memory error handling.
It hoists loop-invariant address initialization and restricts the
anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to a targeted page offset range,
reducing redundant checks and improving lookup efficiency.
- "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and KSM tests" (Sayali
Patil)
Fix issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM selftest categories that can
report failures when the prerequisites for the tests are not
satisfied
- "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only monitoring" (SJ Park)
Introduce attribute-weighted region management in DAMON, allowing
users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as page sizes or
cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring.
By assigning weights to attribute probes, DAMON can completely
disable access tracking and adjust monitoring regions based on
weighted probe-hit counters to optimize monitoring quality for
attribute-focused workloads.
- "mm/hmm: Add mmap lock-drop support for userfaultfd-backed mappings"
(Stanislav Kinsburskii)
Extend hmm_range_fault() to support userfaultfd-backed regions by
allowing the mmap lock to be dropped during fault handling via a new
hmm_range_fault_locked() helper.
By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock
release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd
regions while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers.
- "mm: make VMA page offset handling more consistent" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and
manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel
It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(),
vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while
renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their
functionality.
These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that
will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd
folios.
- "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif)
Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk
callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries
created during HMM migrations
It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock()
properly recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present
THP or a standard migration entry.
- "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" (Dev Jain)
Refactor try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb,
anonymous-lazyfree, and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated
functions, laying the structural groundwork for batched anonymous
large folio unmapping.
- "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and additions" (Song Hu)
Fix typos and fills in missing entries in the DAMON sysfs ABI
document
- "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs" (Gregory Price)
Introduce an atomic sysfs state attribute and supporting DAX/MM
infrastructure to prevent userland races when offlining and removing
entire memory regions
By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it
enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward
compatibility.
- "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Continue transitioning the kernel from the deprecated vm_flags_t type
to vma_flags_t across core memory management infrastructure.
It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(),
unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like
mlock, mprotect, and mremap.
- "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin)
Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate
slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code
documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must
remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions.
- "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park)
Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only
fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access
from outer layers.
It enforces encapsulation across core structures including
damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to
interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct
members.
- "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races"
(SJ Park)
Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race
conditions identified in DAMON
It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a
NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring
accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races.
- "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan
Jackman)
Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages
on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks
via non-PCP or isolated migration paths.
It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation
risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory
hotplug or large allocation frees.
- "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan
Jackman)
Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and
debug assertions.
It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming
convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from
high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete
VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths.
- "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes)
Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API
boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity.
It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a
dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO,
eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only
to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no
functional changes intended.
- "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive
reclaim" (Ridong Chen)
Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across
memory reclaim paths
It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so
unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page
cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead
of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete
gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim().
- "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang)
Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it
removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP
pages as non-resident.
- "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau)
Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API
- "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation
bugs" (SJ Park)
Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by
Sashiko. It initializes the damos->last_applied field to prevent
occasional efficiency degradation and fixes invalid memory accesses
in DAMON KUnit tests during test failure handling.
- "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" (Jinjiang Tu)
Clean up and refactor stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags
without altering functionality.
It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag
bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*()
helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling.
- "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" (Dev Jain)
Extend batched folio unmapping support to file folios within
userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching
capabilities to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed().
This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in
try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control
flow and complexity.
- "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up early_ioremap_reset()"
(Sang-Heon Jeon)
Clarify and clean up the architecture-specific usage of
__late_set_fixmap() and __late_clear_fixmap() after
early_ioremap_reset()
It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset()
must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset
calls in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures.
- "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" (Johannes Weiner)
Address severe performance regressions, swap storms, and spurious
OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure in Meta
production
It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation
requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at
pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather
than spinning unproductively.
- "zram: lockmap tweaks" (Sebastian Siewior)
Optimize and fix lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating
per-entry lockmaps and isolate lock classes across multiple instances
This reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map
instances with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic
lock_class_key to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports
when different zram devices are backed by distinct filesystems.

lib: test bitmap vs IDA vs Maple Tree performance for region allocations
Compare the cost of allocating and freeing variable-sized regions using a bitmap, IDA and a Maple Tree. All implementations process the same randomly generated sequence of regions containing up to 32 entries, until the configured capacity is exhausted. The benchmark exercises monotonic allocation into an initially empty pool, followed by reverse-order freeing. It does not model fragmentation or interleaved allocation and freeing, nor does it isolate locking or RCU overhead. Allocation time includes the terminal failed request that detects exhaustion. Run the benchmark at several capacities to show how the approaches scale. Report allocation and free times separately because bitmap, IDA and Maple Tree removal have substantially different costs. On x86/kvm, the output example is: Start testing bitmap vs IDA vs Maple Tree region allocation memory: bitmap is exact; IDA and Maple Tree are lower bounds Type alloc (ns) free (ns) regions capacity memory (B) Bitmap 93457345 176151 60644 1000000 125000 Maple 11758660 12870146 60644 1000000 1552656 IDA 31066416 20870824 60644 1000000 134864 Bitmap 919119 17679 6032 100000 12504 Maple 1158193 1187140 6032 100000 154640 IDA 2759670 2116004 6032 100000 14288 Bitmap 17120 2043 613 10000 1256 Maple 116350 117537 613 10000 15888 IDA 243396 202654 613 10000 1872 Bitmap 1220 262 55 1000 128 Maple 12076 10106 55 1000 1552 IDA 25730 20875 55 1000 144 Bitmap 593 124 18 100 16 Maple 3599 4782 18 100 528 IDA 3266 1960 18 100 144 Bitmap 414 129 10 10 8 Maple 2143 1385 10 10 272 IDA 892 648 10 10 16 Region allocation benchmark complete Reported IDA and Maple Tree memory figures exclude slab overhead and transient allocations. The Maple Tree figure is additionally a lower-bound estimate that assumes fully occupied leaf nodes and excludes internal nodes. IDA has no region-allocation API, so each region is implemented as a sequence of single-ID allocations. The IDs remain contiguous because this benchmark fills an initially empty IDA monotonically. The benchmark is motivated by the discussion linked below about choosing the best data structure for the channel ID pool with the capacity of 2048 IDs for the nova GPU driver. Specifically for 2048 IDs the result is: Bitmap 5112 615 121 2048 256 Maple 78526 59592 121 2048 3344 IDA 165274 117761 121 2048 848 The benchmark accepts a list of up to 64 nonzero capacities to test. For example: insmod region_alloc_benchmark.ko capacities=1024,2048,4096,65536 The list may contain duplicate capacities. Each occurrence generates a new region-size sequence, which is useful for collecting statistical characteristics of the benchmark results. bootconfig: render embedded bootconfig as a kernel cmdline at build time
Add the build-time pipeline that renders the "kernel" subtree of
CONFIG_BOOT_CONFIG_EMBED_FILE into a flat cmdline string and stashes
it in .init.rodata as embedded_kernel_cmdline[]. A follow-up patch
adds the runtime helper that prepends this string to boot_command_line
during early architecture setup so parse_early_param() sees the values.
The build wires up:
tools/bootconfig -C kernel - userspace tool already shared with
lib/bootconfig.c, used here in -C mode
to render a bootconfig file to a cmdline
lib/embedded-cmdline.S - .incbin's the rendered text plus a NUL
(listed under the EXTRA BOOT CONFIG
MAINTAINERS entry)
lib/Makefile rule - runs tools/bootconfig at build time
Makefile prepare dep - ensures tools/bootconfig is built first,
same pattern as tools/objtool and
tools/bpf/resolve_btfids
Drop the test target from tools/bootconfig/Makefile's default 'all'
recipe so that hooking the binary into the kernel build does not run
test-bootconfig.sh on every prepare. The tests stay available as
'make -C tools/bootconfig test', matching the convention of
tools/objtool and tools/bpf/resolve_btfids whose 'all' targets only
build the binary.
Require BOOT_CONFIG_EMBED_FILE to be non-empty before the new option
can be enabled, otherwise tools/bootconfig -C runs against an empty
file and prints a parse error on every kernel build.
The feature gates on CONFIG_ARCH_SUPPORTS_CMDLINE_FROM_BOOTCONFIG, a
silent symbol arches select once they've wired the prepend call into
setup_arch(). No arch selects it in this patch, so the user-visible
CONFIG_CMDLINE_FROM_BOOTCONFIG is not yet enableable; when an arch
later opts in, the runtime behavior is added by the follow-up patches.
tools/bootconfig also installs on target systems, so its own Makefile
keeps $(CC) and stays cross-buildable as a standalone tool. The kernel
build, which runs the tool on the build host during prepare, instead
forces CC=$(HOSTCC) from a dedicated tools/bootconfig rule and clears
CROSS_COMPILE= in the sub-make. Without that clear, an LLVM=1 cross
build would inherit CROSS_COMPILE and tools/scripts/Makefile.include
would inject --target=/--sysroot= flags into the host clang invocation,
producing a target binary that fails to exec ("Exec format error").
embedded-cmdline.S places the rendered string in its own .init.rodata
subsection (.init.rodata.embed_cmdline) with the "a" (allocatable,
read-only) flag and %progbits. lib/bootconfig-data.S already places
the embedded bootconfig blob in .init.rodata with the "aw" flag
(xbc_init() rewrites separators in place, so that data must be
writable). Using a distinct subsection name avoids the ld.lld section-
type mismatch that would otherwise arise from mixing "a" and "aw"
under the same name; the linker's "*(.init.rodata .init.rodata.*)"
glob still folds both into the init image and frees them after boot.
A follow-up patch wires the build-time tools/bootconfig into the
top-level clean target.

raid6: move to lib/raid/
Move the raid6 code to live in lib/raid/ with the XOR code, and change the internal organization so that each architecture has a subdirectory similar to the CRC, crypto and XOR libraries, and fix up the Makefile to only build files actually needed. Also move the kunit test case from the history test/ subdirectory to tests/ and use the normal naming scheme for it. lib/bitrev: Introduce GENERIC_BITREVERSE
The generic bit reversal implementation is controlled by !HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE. This makes it difficult for architectures to provide a hardware-accelerated implementation while being able to fall back to the generic version if needed. This patch adds GENERIC_BITREVERSE, so bitreverse API is controlled by BITREVERSE, GENERIC_BITREVERSE and HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE options. The relationship between them is described as follows: - BITREVERSE is selected by user code; it's required to generate the API; - Architectures may select HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE and provide an arch implementation in arch/$(ARCH)/include/asm/bitrev.h. - if HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE isn't set, BITREVERSE selects GENERIC_BITREVERSE; - if GENERIC_BITREVERSE is set and HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE is not, the kernel provides generic implementation only, and wires bitrevXX() to it. - if HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE is set and GENERIC_BITREVERSE is not, the arch code provides __arch_bitrevXX(), and it is wired to bitrevXX(); - if both GENERIC_BITREVERSE and HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE are selected, the kernel generates generic___bitrev(), but wires bitrev() to the __arch_bitrev(). The last option allows architectures to use generic___bitrev() as a fallback option. Drivers and core code should never select GENERIC_BITREVERSE or HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE explicitly. Architectures that require generic bitreverse API as a fallback should explicitly enable GENERIC_BITREVERSE together with HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE. Signed-off-by: Yury Norov <ynorov@nvidia.com> |

in the bch code.
- The 2 patch series "ocfs2/dlm: fix two bugs in dlm_match_regions()"
from Junrui Luo does what is claims.
- The 27 patch series "cleanup the RAID5 XOR library" from Christoph
Hellwig is a quite far-reaching cleanup to this code. I can't do better
than to quote Christoph:
The XOR library used for the RAID5 parity is a bit of a mess right
now. The main file sits in crypto/ despite not being cryptography and
not using the crypto API, with the generic implementations sitting in
include/asm-generic and the arch implementations sitting in an asm/
header in theory. The latter doesn't work for many cases, so
architectures often build the code directly into the core kernel, or
create another module for the architecture code.
Change this to a single module in lib/ that also contains the
architecture optimizations, similar to the library work Eric Biggers
has done for the CRC and crypto libraries later. After that it
changes to better calling conventions that allow for smarter
architecture implementations (although none is contained here yet),
and uses static_call to avoid indirection function call overhead.
- The 2 patch series "lib/list_sort: Clean up list_sort() scheduling
workarounds" from Kuan-Wei Chiu cleans up this library code by removing
a hacky thing which was added for UBIFS, which UBIFS doesn't actually
need.
- The 5 patch series "Fix bugs in extract_iter_to_sg()" from Christian
Ehrhardt fixes a few bugs in the scatterlist code, adds in-kernel tests
for the now-fixed bugs and fixes a leak in the test itself.
- The 3 patch series "kdump: Enable LUKS-encrypted dump target support
in ARM64 and PowerPC" from Coiby Xu eenables support of the
LUKS-encrypted device dump target on arm64 and powerpc.
- The 4 patch series "ocfs2: consolidate extent list validation into
block read callbacks" from Joseph Qi addresses ocfs2's validation of
extent list fields - cleanup, simplification, robustness. (Kernel test
robot loves mounting corrupted fs images!)

ubsan: turn off kmsan inside of ubsan instrumentation
The structure initialization in the two type mismatch handling functions causes a call to __msan_memset() to be generated inside of a UACCESS block, which in turn leads to an objtool warning about possibly leaking uaccess-enabled state: lib/ubsan.o: warning: objtool: __ubsan_handle_type_mismatch+0xda: call to __msan_memset() with UACCESS enabled lib/ubsan.o: warning: objtool: __ubsan_handle_type_mismatch_v1+0xf4: call to __msan_memset() with UACCESS enabled Most likely __msan_memset() is safe to be called here and could be added to the uaccess_safe_builtin[] list of safe functions, but seeing that the ubsan file itself already has kasan, ubsan and kcsan disabled itself, it is probably a good idea to also turn off kmsan here, in particular this also avoids the risk of recursing between ubsan and kcsan checks in other functions of this file. I saw this happen while testing randconfig builds with clang-22, but did not try older versions, or attempt to see which kernel change introduced the warning. workqueue: add test_workqueue benchmark module
Add a kernel module that benchmarks queue_work() throughput on an unbound workqueue to measure pool->lock contention under different affinity scope configurations (cache vs cache_shard). The module spawns N kthreads (default: num_online_cpus()), each bound to a different CPU. All threads start simultaneously and queue work items, measuring the latency of each queue_work() call. Results are reported as p50/p90/p95 latencies for each affinity scope. The affinity scope is switched between runs via the workqueue's sysfs affinity_scope attribute (WQ_SYSFS), avoiding the need for any new exported symbols. The module runs as __init-only, returning -EAGAIN to auto-unload, and can be re-run via insmod. Example of the output: running 50 threads, 50000 items/thread cpu 6806017 items/sec p50=2574 p90=5068 p95=5818 ns smt 6821040 items/sec p50=2624 p90=5168 p95=5949 ns cache_shard 1633653 items/sec p50=5337 p90=9694 p95=11207 ns cache 286069 items/sec p50=72509 p90=82304 p95=85009 ns numa 319403 items/sec p50=63745 p90=73480 p95=76505 ns system 308461 items/sec p50=66561 p90=75714 p95=78048 ns Signed-off-by: Breno Leitao <leitao@debian.org> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> |

lib/glob: convert selftest to KUnit
This patch converts the existing glob selftest (lib/globtest.c) to use the KUnit framework (lib/tests/glob_kunit.c). The new test: - Migrates all 64 test cases from the original test to the KUnit suite. - Removes the custom 'verbose' module parameter as KUnit handles logging. - Updates Kconfig.debug and Makefile to support the new KUnit test. - Updates Kconfig and Makefile to remove the original selftest. - Updates GLOB_SELFTEST to GLOB_KUNIT_TEST for arch/m68k/configs. lib/tests: convert test_min_heap module to KUnit
Move lib/test_min_heap.c to lib/tests/min_heap_kunit.c and convert it to
use KUnit.
This change switches the ad-hoc test code to standard KUnit test cases.
The test data remains the same, but the verification logic is updated to
use KUNIT_EXPECT_* macros.
Also remove CONFIG_TEST_MIN_HEAP from arch/*/configs/* because it is no
longer used. The new CONFIG_MIN_HEAP_KUNIT_TEST will be automatically
enabled by CONFIG_KUNIT_ALL_TESTS.
The reasons for converting to KUnit are:
1. Standardization:
Switching from ad-hoc printk-based reporting to the standard
KTAP format makes it easier for CI systems to parse and report test
results
2. Better Diagnostics:
Using KUNIT_EXPECT_* macros automatically provides detailed
diagnostics on failure.
3. Tooling Integration:
It allows the test to be managed and executed using standard
KUnit tools.

lib: Support ARCH_HAS_CPU_CACHE_INVALIDATE_MEMREGION
ARCH_HAS_CPU_CACHE_INVALIDATE_MEMREGION provides the mechanism for invalidating certain memory regions in a cache-incoherent manner. Currently this is used by NVDIMM and CXL memory drivers in cases where it is necessary to flush all data from caches by physical address range. The operations in question are effectively memory hotplug, where stale data might otherwise remain in the caches. This is separate from the invalidates done to enable use of non-coherent DMA masters, primarily in terms of when it is needed (not related to DMA mappings) and how deep the flush must push data. The flushes done for non-coherent DMA only need to reach the Point of Coherence of a single host (which is often nearer CPUs and DMA masters than the physical storage). This operation must push the data out of non architectural caches (memory-side caches, write buffers etc) and typically all the way to the memory device. In some architectures these operations are supported by system components that may become available only later in boot as they are either present on a discoverable bus, or via a firmware description of an MMIO interface (e.g. ACPI DSDT). Provide a framework to handle this case. Architectures can opt in for this support via CONFIG_GENERIC_CPU_CACHE_MAINTENANCE Add a registration framework. Each driver provides an ops structure and the first op is Write Back and Invalidate by PA Range. The driver may over invalidate. For systems that can perform this operation asynchronously an optional completion check operation is also provided. If present that must be called to ensure that the action has finished. This provides a considerable performance advantage if multiple agents are involved in the maintenance operation. When multiple agents are present in the system each should register with this framework and the core code will issue the invalidate to all of them before checking for completion on each. This is done to avoid need for filtering in the core code which can become complex when interleave, potentially across different cache coherency hardware is going on, so it is easier to tell everyone and let those who don't care do nothing. kho: add test for kexec handover
Testing kexec handover requires a kernel driver that will generate some data and preserve it with KHO on the first boot and then restore that data and verify it was preserved properly after kexec. To facilitate such test, along with the kernel driver responsible for data generation, preservation and restoration add a script that runs a kernel in a VM with a minimal /init. The /init enables KHO, loads a kernel image for kexec and runs kexec reboot. After the boot of the kexeced kernel, the driver verifies that the data was properly preserved. CRC updates for 6.17
Updates for the kernel's CRC (cyclic redundancy check) code:
- Reorganize the architecture-optimized CRC code. It now lives in
lib/crc/$(SRCARCH)/ rather than arch/$(SRCARCH)/lib/, and it is no
longer artificially split into separate generic and arch modules.
This allows better inlining and dead code elimination. The generic
CRC code is also no longer exported, simplifying the API. (This
mirrors the similar changes to SHA-1 and SHA-2 in lib/crypto/,
which can be found in the "Crypto library updates" pull request.)
- Improve crc32c() performance on newer x86_64 CPUs on long messages
by enabling the VPCLMULQDQ optimized code.
- Simplify the crypto_shash wrappers for crc32_le() and crc32c().
Register just one shash algorithm for each that uses the (fully
optimized) library functions, instead of unnecessarily providing
direct access to the generic CRC code.
- Remove unused and obsolete drivers for hardware CRC engines.
- Remove CRC-32 combination functions that are no longer used.
- Add kerneldoc for crc32_le(), crc32_be(), and crc32c().
- Convert the crc32() macro to an inline function.

stackleak: Rename STACKLEAK to KSTACK_ERASE
In preparation for adding Clang sanitizer coverage stack depth tracking that can support stack depth callbacks: - Add the new top-level CONFIG_KSTACK_ERASE option which will be implemented either with the stackleak GCC plugin, or with the Clang stack depth callback support. - Rename CONFIG_GCC_PLUGIN_STACKLEAK as needed to CONFIG_KSTACK_ERASE, but keep it for anything specific to the GCC plugin itself. - Rename all exposed "STACKLEAK" names and files to "KSTACK_ERASE" (named for what it does rather than what it protects against), but leave as many of the internals alone as possible to avoid even more churn. While here, also split "prev_lowest_stack" into CONFIG_KSTACK_ERASE_METRICS, since that's the only place it is referenced from. panic: generalize panic_print's function to show sys info
'panic_print' was introduced to help debugging kernel panic by dumping different kinds of system information like tasks' call stack, memory, ftrace buffer, etc. Actually this function could also be used to help debugging other cases like task-hung, soft/hard lockup, etc. where user may need the snapshot of system info at that time. Extract system info dump function related code from panic.c to separate file sys_info.[ch], for wider usage by other kernel parts for debugging. Also modify the macro names about singulars/plurals. kbuild: Switch from -Wvla to -Wvla-larger-than=1
Variable Length Arrays (VLAs) on the stack must not be used in the kernel.
Function parameter VLAs[1] should be usable, but -Wvla will warn for
those. For example, this will produce a warning but it is not using a
stack VLA:
int something(size_t n, int array[n]) { ...
Clang has no way yet to distinguish between the VLA types[2], so
depend on GCC for now to keep stack VLAs out of the tree by using GCC's
-Wvla-larger-than=N option (though GCC may split -Wvla similarly[3] to
how Clang is planning to).
While GCC 8+ supports -Wvla-larger-than, only 9+ supports ...=0[4],
so use -Wvla-larger-than=1. Adjust mm/kasan/Makefile to remove it from
CFLAGS (GCC <9 appears unable to disable the warning correctly[5]).
The VLA usage in lib/test_ubsan.c was removed in commit

Networking changes for 6.15.
Core & protocols
----------------
- Continue Netlink conversions to per-namespace RTNL lock
(IPv4 routing, routing rules, routing next hops, ARP ioctls).
- Continue extending the use of netdev instance locks. As a driver
opt-in protect queue operations and (in due course) ethtool
operations with the instance lock and not RTNL lock.
- Support collecting TCP timestamps (data submitted, sent, acked)
in BPF, allowing for transparent (to the application) and lower
overhead tracking of TCP RPC performance.
- Tweak existing networking Rx zero-copy infra to support zero-copy
Rx via io_uring.
- Optimize MPTCP performance in single subflow mode by 29%.
- Enable GRO on packets which went thru XDP CPU redirect (were queued
for processing on a different CPU). Improving TCP stream performance
up to 2x.
- Improve performance of contended connect() by 200% by searching
for an available 4-tuple under RCU rather than a spin lock.
Bring an additional 229% improvement by tweaking hash distribution.
- Avoid unconditionally touching sk_tsflags on RX, improving
performance under UDP flood by as much as 10%.
- Avoid skb_clone() dance in ping_rcv() to improve performance under
ping flood.
- Avoid FIB lookup in netfilter if socket is available, 20% perf win.
- Rework network device creation (in-kernel) API to more clearly
identify network namespaces and their roles.
There are up to 4 namespace roles but we used to have just 2 netns
pointer arguments, interpreted differently based on context.
- Use sysfs_break_active_protection() instead of trylock to avoid
deadlocks between unregistering objects and sysfs access.
- Add a new sysctl and sockopt for capping max retransmit timeout
in TCP.
- Support masking port and DSCP in routing rule matches.
- Support dumping IPv4 multicast addresses with RTM_GETMULTICAST.
- Support specifying at what time packet should be sent on AF_XDP
sockets.
- Expose TCP ULP diagnostic info (for TLS and MPTCP) to non-admin users.
- Add Netlink YAML spec for WiFi (nl80211) and conntrack.
- Introduce EXPORT_IPV6_MOD() and EXPORT_IPV6_MOD_GPL() for symbols
which only need to be exported when IPv6 support is built as a module.
- Age FDB entries based on Rx not Tx traffic in VxLAN, similar
to normal bridging.
- Allow users to specify source port range for GENEVE tunnels.
- netconsole: allow attaching kernel release, CPU ID and task name
to messages as metadata
Driver API
----------
- Continue rework / fixing of Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) across
the SW layers. Delegate the responsibilities to phylink where possible.
Improve its handling in phylib.

BPF, allowing for transparent (to the application) and lower
overhead tracking of TCP RPC performance.
- Tweak existing networking Rx zero-copy infra to support zero-copy
Rx via io_uring.
- Optimize MPTCP performance in single subflow mode by 29%.
- Enable GRO on packets which went thru XDP CPU redirect (were queued
for processing on a different CPU). Improving TCP stream
performance up to 2x.
- Improve performance of contended connect() by 200% by searching for
an available 4-tuple under RCU rather than a spin lock. Bring an
additional 229% improvement by tweaking hash distribution.

ping flood.
- Avoid FIB lookup in netfilter if socket is available, 20% perf win.
- Rework network device creation (in-kernel) API to more clearly
identify network namespaces and their roles. There are up to 4
namespace roles but we used to have just 2 netns pointer arguments,
interpreted differently based on context.
- Use sysfs_break_active_protection() instead of trylock to avoid
deadlocks between unregistering objects and sysfs access.
- Add a new sysctl and sockopt for capping max retransmit timeout in
TCP.

sockets.
- Expose TCP ULP diagnostic info (for TLS and MPTCP) to non-admin
users.
- Add Netlink YAML spec for WiFi (nl80211) and conntrack.
- Introduce EXPORT_IPV6_MOD() and EXPORT_IPV6_MOD_GPL() for symbols
which only need to be exported when IPv6 support is built as a
module.
- Age FDB entries based on Rx not Tx traffic in VxLAN, similar to
normal bridging.
- Allow users to specify source port range for GENEVE tunnels.
- netconsole: allow attaching kernel release, CPU ID and task name to
messages as metadata

CRC updates for 6.15
Another set of improvements to the kernel's CRC (cyclic redundancy
check) code:
- Rework the CRC64 library functions to be directly optimized, like what
I did last cycle for the CRC32 and CRC-T10DIF library functions.
- Rewrite the x86 PCLMULQDQ-optimized CRC code, and add VPCLMULQDQ
support and acceleration for crc64_be and crc64_nvme.
- Rewrite the riscv Zbc-optimized CRC code, and add acceleration for
crc_t10dif, crc64_be, and crc64_nvme.
- Remove crc_t10dif and crc64_rocksoft from the crypto API, since they
are no longer needed there.
- Rename crc64_rocksoft to crc64_nvme, as the old name was incorrect.
- Add kunit test cases for crc64_nvme and crc7.
- Eliminate redundant functions for calculating the Castagnoli CRC32,
settling on just crc32c().
- Remove unnecessary prompts from some of the CRC kconfig options.
- Further optimize the x86 crc32c code.

Updates for the VDSO infrastructure:
- Consolidate the VDSO storage
The VDSO data storage and data layout has been largely architecture
specific for historical reasons. That increases the maintenance effort
and causes inconsistencies over and over.
There is no real technical reason for architecture specific layouts and
implementations. The architecture specific details can easily be
integrated into a generic layout, which also reduces the amount of
duplicated code for managing the mappings.
Convert all architectures over to a unified layout and common mapping
infrastructure. This splits the VDSO data layout into subsystem
specific blocks, timekeeping, random and architecture parts, which
provides a better structure and allows to improve and update the
functionalities without conflict and interaction.
- Rework the timekeeping data storage
The current implementation is designed for exposing system timekeeping
accessors, which was good enough at the time when it was designed.
PTP and Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) change that as there are
requirements to expose independent PTP clocks, which are not related to
system timekeeping.
Replace the monolithic data storage by a structured layout, which
allows to add support for independent PTP clocks on top while reusing
both the data structures and the time accessor implementations.

Objtool changes for v6.15:
- The biggest change is the new option to automatically fail
the build on objtool warnings: CONFIG_OBJTOOL_WERROR.
While there are no currently known unfixed false positives
left, such an expansion in the severity of objtool warnings
inevitably creates a risk of build failures, so it's disabled by
default and depends on !COMPILE_TEST, so it shouldn't be enabled
on allyesconfig/allmodconfig builds and won't be forced on people
who just accept build-time defaults in 'make oldconfig'.
While the option is strongly recommended, only people who enable
it explicitly should see it.
(Josh Poimboeuf)
- Disable branch profiling in noinstr code with a broad
brush that includes all of arch/x86/ and kernel/sched/. (Josh Poimboeuf)
- Create backup object files on objtool errors and print exact
objtool arguments to make failure analysis easier (Josh Poimboeuf)
- Improve noreturn handling (Josh Poimboeuf)
- Improve rodata handling (Tiezhu Yang)
- Support jump tables, switch tables and goto tables on LoongArch (Tiezhu Yang)
- Misc cleanups and fixes (Josh Poimboeuf, David Engraf, Ingo Molnar)

tracing: Disable branch profiling in noinstr code
CONFIG_TRACE_BRANCH_PROFILING inserts a call to ftrace_likely_update() for each use of likely() or unlikely(). That breaks noinstr rules if the affected function is annotated as noinstr. Disable branch profiling for files with noinstr functions. In addition to some individual files, this also includes the entire arch/x86 subtree, as well as the kernel/entry, drivers/cpuidle, and drivers/idle directories, all of which are noinstr-heavy. Due to the nature of how sched binaries are built by combining multiple .c files into one, branch profiling is disabled more broadly across the sched code than would otherwise be needed. This fixes many warnings like the following: vmlinux.o: warning: objtool: do_syscall_64+0x40: call to ftrace_likely_update() leaves .noinstr.text section vmlinux.o: warning: objtool: __rdgsbase_inactive+0x33: call to ftrace_likely_update() leaves .noinstr.text section vmlinux.o: warning: objtool: handle_bug.isra.0+0x198: call to ftrace_likely_update() leaves .noinstr.text section ... vdso: Add generic time data storage
Historically each architecture defined their own way to store the vDSO data page. Add a generic mechanism to provide storage for that page. Furthermore this generic storage will be extended to also provide uniform storage for *non*-time-related data, like the random state or architecture-specific data. These will have their own pages and data structures, so rename 'vdso_data' into 'vdso_time_data' to make that split clear from the name. Also introduce a new consistent naming scheme for the symbols related to the vDSO, which makes it clear if the symbol is accessible from userspace or kernel space and the type of data behind the symbol. The generic fault handler contains an optimization to prefault the vvar page when the timens page is accessed. This was lifted from s390 and x86. lib/crc64-rocksoft: stop wrapping the crypto API
Following what was done for the CRC32 and CRC-T10DIF library functions, get rid of the pointless use of the crypto API and make crc64_rocksoft_update() call into the library directly. This is faster and simpler. Remove crc64_rocksoft() (the version of the function that did not take a 'crc' argument) since it is unused. xarray: port tests to kunit
Minimally rewrite the XArray unit tests to use kunit. This integrates nicely with existing kunit tools which produce nicer human-readable output compared to the existing machinery. Running the xarray tests before this change requires an obscure invocation ``` tools/testing/kunit/kunit.py run --arch arm64 --make_options LLVM=1 \ --kconfig_add CONFIG_TEST_XARRAY=y --raw_output=all nothing ``` which on failure produces ``` BUG at check_reserve:513 ... XArray: 6782340 of 6782364 tests passed ``` and exits 0. Running the xarray tests after this change requires a simpler invocation ``` tools/testing/kunit/kunit.py run --arch arm64 --make_options LLVM=1 \ xarray ``` which on failure produces (colors omitted) ``` [09:50:53] ====================== check_reserve ====================== [09:50:53] [FAILED] param-0 [09:50:53] # check_reserve: EXPECTATION FAILED at lib/test_xarray.c:536 [09:50:53] xa_erase(xa, 12345678) != NULL ... [09:50:53] # module: test_xarray [09:50:53] # xarray: pass:26 fail:3 skip:0 total:29 [09:50:53] # Totals: pass:28 fail:3 skip:0 total:31 [09:50:53] ===================== [FAILED] xarray ====================== ``` and exits 1. Use of richer kunit assertions is intentionally omitted to reduce the scope of the change. lib/crc_kunit.c: add KUnit test suite for CRC library functions
Add a KUnit test suite for the crc16, crc_t10dif, crc32_le, crc32_be, crc32c, and crc64_be library functions. It avoids code duplication by sharing most logic among all CRC variants. The test suite includes: - Differential fuzz test of each CRC function against a simple bit-at-a-time reference implementation. - Test for CRC combination, when implemented by a CRC variant. - Optional benchmark of each CRC function with various data lengths. This is intended as a replacement for crc32test and crc16_kunit, as well as a new test for CRC variants which didn't previously have a test.
