xenbus: Unregister reboot notifier on init failure
xs_init() registers xs_reboot_nb before initializing XenStore
communications and starting xenwatch. If either operation fails, the
notifier remains registered and a later initialization attempt can hit a
duplicate registration.
Check the notifier registration result and unregister it on every
subsequent failure path.

x86/xen: fix init of balloon stats again
The handling of extra memory regions done in balloon_add_regions() is not correct for PV guests, since the initial target is set to reflect the real memory the system has, not what's described on the memory map, which can be higher if memory != maxmem. Introduce separate logic for addition vs subtraction in balloon_add_regions() and handle extra regions correctly by adding them to the total amount of pages, instead of subtracting from the current and target pages amounts. In the common case PV domU/dom0 and PVH dom0 will use the addition path, since the initial target reflects the real assigned memory. HVM and PVH domUs use the subtraction path, since the target is set based on the amount of memory reported in the memory map, without accounting for released regions. Fixes: |

xen/xenbus: check otherend_id only after it has been initialized
When device just got initialized (for example on module load), the
otherend_id field is initialized only after
xenbus_read_otherend_details() gets called. If xenstore watch triggers
xenbus_dev_changed() before that, it might consider still zeroed
otherend_id field (not matching actual xenstore content) as a sign of
device state reset. It can happen because xenstore watch are handled in
another thread (xenwatch), which can run in parallel to the initial
device probe running at module load. In that case, it would call
device_unregister(), which would deadlock against device probe from
module init.
Fix this by considering dev->otherend_id change only after dev->otherend
is set (which happen after otherend_id is initialized).

xenbus: reject unterminated directory replies
split_strings() walks each directory entry with strlen(). xen/gntalloc: validate grant count before allocation
gntalloc_ioctl_alloc() allocates the grant-id array before checking whether the requested count fits within the global grant limit. Counts above that limit cannot succeed, so reject them before the user-controlled allocation reaches kcalloc(). Use a subtraction-based check while holding gref_mutex so adding the requested count cannot wrap. Also cast the count before advancing the per-file index so the page-size multiplication is performed in 64-bit arithmetic. xen/front-pgdir-shbuf: free grant reference head on errors
grant_references() allocates a private grant-reference head before claiming references for the page directory and, for guest-owned buffers, the data pages. The success path frees the remaining head, but claim failures and grant_refs_for_buffer() errors return immediately. xen/gntdev: fix error handling in ioctl
When gntdev_ioctl_map_grant_ref() fails to copy the operation result back to userspace after successfully adding the mapping to the list, the error path returns -EFAULT without releasing the reference acquired by gntdev_alloc_map(). The mapping remains in priv->maps with a refcount of 1, causing a memory leak and a dangling list entry. Additionally, gntdev_add_map() may modify map->index to avoid overlap with existing mappings. Therefore, the index returned to userspace must be obtained after gntdev_add_map() completes. Fix this by holding the mutex across gntdev_add_map(), retrieving the correct index, and copy_to_user(). If copy_to_user() fails, remove the mapping from the list and release the reference while still holding the lock. Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Fix these issues by properly handling all error cases. xen/pvcalls: bound backend response req_id before indexing rsp[]
pvcalls_front_event_handler() takes req_id directly from the
backend-supplied ring response and uses it to index the fixed-size
bedata->rsp[] array for a memcpy() and a store, with no range check. A
malicious or buggy backend can set req_id past PVCALLS_NR_RSP_PER_RING
and drive an out-of-bounds write past the bedata allocation.
req_id was also declared int while the wire field rsp->req_id is u32, so
a range check on the signed value alone is insufficient: a backend
req_id of 0xffffffff becomes -1, passes a >= PVCALLS_NR_RSP_PER_RING
test and indexes bedata->rsp[-1]. Declare req_id as u32 so a single
bound covers both ends.
A backend that sends an out-of-range req_id has violated the wire
protocol, so rather than silently dropping the response, log once and
stop trusting the backend: set bedata->disabled. The event handler then
ignores further responses, and the request paths that wait for a
response return -EIO instead of blocking forever. This mirrors the
fatal-error handling xen-netback uses (xenvif_fatal_tx_err()).
The pvcalls frontend currently trusts its backend, so this is not a
classic-Xen security issue, but it matters for hardening PV frontends
against malicious backends (confidential and disaggregated deployments).

scsi: xen: scsiback: Free the command tag on the TMR submit-failure path
scsiback_device_action() obtains a command tag in
scsiback_get_pend_req() and submits a task-management request with
target_submit_tmr(). When target_submit_tmr() fails it returns < 0 and
scsiback jumps to the err: label, which sends a response but frees
nothing, leaking the tag.
Impact: a pvSCSI guest can leak the command tags of a LUN's session,
stopping the LUN, by issuing VSCSIIF_ACT_SCSI_ABORT or RESET requests
whenever target_submit_tmr() fails.
transport_generic_free_cmd() cannot be used here. By the time
target_submit_tmr() returns an error it has already run
__target_init_cmd() (so se_cmd->cmd_kref is one, not zero), and on its
target_get_sess_cmd() error path it has freed se_cmd->se_tmr_req via
core_tmr_release_req() while leaving SCF_SCSI_TMR_CDB set and the
pointer dangling. Letting the command release run target_free_cmd_mem()
would then double-free se_tmr_req.
Use the same helper, which returns just the tag, on this path too.

ca978f8a93 |
scsi: xen: scsiback: Free unsubmitted command instead of double-putting it
scsiback_get_pend_req() obtains a command tag and returns a vscsibk_pend
whose embedded se_cmd has only been memset to 0, so its cmd_kref is 0;
the se_cmd is initialised (kref_init() via target_init_cmd()) only
later, in scsiback_cmd_exec(), on the successful VSCSIIF_ACT_SCSI_CDB
path. The two error paths in scsiback_do_cmd_fn() taken before the
command is submitted -- a failed scsiback_gnttab_data_map() and an
unknown ring_req.act -- call
transport_generic_free_cmd(&pending_req->se_cmd, 0), which kref_put()s a
refcount of 0. That underflows it ("refcount_t: underflow;
use-after-free") and, as the release function is not run, leaks the
command tag.
Impact: a pvSCSI guest can leak every command tag of a LUN's session,
stopping the LUN, by submitting requests with a bad grant reference or
an unknown request type; under panic_on_warn the refcount underflow
panics the host.
Add a helper that just returns the tag with target_free_tag() and sends
the error response. It frees the tag while the v2p reference still pins
the session, and snapshots the response fields beforehand because
freeing the tag can let another ring reuse the pending_req slot.

of: Factor arguments passed to of_map_id() into a struct
Change of_map_id() to take a pointer to struct of_phandle_args instead of passing target device node and translated IDs separately. Update all callers accordingly. Add an explicit filter_np parameter to of_map_id() and of_map_msi_id() to separate the filter input from the output. Previously, the target parameter served dual purpose: as an input filter (if non-NULL, only match entries targeting that node) and as an output (receiving the matched node with a reference held). Now filter_np is the explicit input filter and arg->np is the pure output. Previously, of_map_id() would call of_node_put() on the matched node when a filter was provided, making reference ownership inconsistent. Remove this internal of_node_put() call so that of_map_id() now always transfers ownership of the matched node reference to the caller via arg->np. Callers are now consistently responsible for releasing this reference with of_node_put(arg->np) when done. Since we now have quite a few users parsing "iommu-map" and "msi-map" properties, give them some wrappers to conveniently encapsulate the appropriate sets of property names. xen/mcelog: mark g_physinfo, ncpus and xen_mce_chrdev_device as __ro_after_init
The 'g_physinfo' and 'ncpus' variables are initialized only during the init phase in the 'bind_virq_for_mce' function and never changed. So, mark them as __ro_after_init. The 'xen_mce_chrdev_device' variable is initialized only in the declaration and never changed. ACPI: PAD: xen: Check ACPI_COMPANION() against NULL
Every platform driver can be forced to match a device that doesn't match
its list of device IDs because of device_match_driver_override(), so
platform drivers that rely on the existence of a device's ACPI companion
object need to verify its presence.
Accordingly, add a requisite ACPI_COMPANION() check against NULL to the
Xen variant of the ACPI processor aggregator device (PAD) driver.

treewide: Explicitly include the x86 CPUID headers
Modify all CPUID call sites which implicitly include any of the CPUID headers to explicitly include them instead. For KVM's reverse_cpuid.h, just include <asm/cpuid/types.h> since it references the CPUID_EAX..EDX symbols without using the CPUID APIs. Note, this allows removing the inclusion of <asm/cpuid/api.h> from within <asm/processor.h> next. That allows the CPUID API headers to include <asm/processor.h> without introducing a circular dependency. Signed-off-by: Ahmed S. xen/privcmd: fix double free via VMA splitting
privcmd_vm_ops defines .close (privcmd_close), but neither .may_split
nor .open. When userspace does a partial munmap() on a privcmd mapping,
the kernel splits the VMA via __split_vma(). Since may_split is NULL,
the split is allowed. vm_area_dup() copies vm_private_data (a pages
array allocated in alloc_empty_pages()) into the new VMA without any
fixup, because there is no .open callback.
Both VMAs now point to the same pages array. When the unmapped portion
is closed, privcmd_close() calls:
- xen_unmap_domain_gfn_range()
- xen_free_unpopulated_pages()
- kvfree(pages)
The surviving VMA still holds the dangling pointer. When it is later
destroyed, the same sequence runs again, which leads to a double free.
Fix this issue by adding a .may_split callback denying the VMA split.

Pull ACPI support updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"These include an update of the CMOS RTC driver and the related ACPI
and x86 code that, among other things, switches it over to using the
platform device interface for device binding on x86 instead of the PNP
device driver interface (which allows the code in question to be
simplified quite a bit), a major update of the ACPI Time and Alarm
Device (TAD) driver adding an RTC class device interface to it, and
updates of core ACPI drivers that remove some unnecessary and not
really useful code from them.
Apart from that, two drivers are converted to using the platform
driver interface for device binding instead of the ACPI driver one,
which is slated for removal, support for the Performance Limited
register is added to the ACPI CPPC library and there are some
janitorial updates of it and the related cpufreq CPPC driver, the ACPI
processor driver is fixed and cleaned up, and NVIDIA vendor CPER
record handler is added to the APEI GHES code.
Also, the interface for obtaining a CPU UID from ACPI is consolidated
across architectures and used for fixing a problem with the PCI TPH

minor ACPI OS Services Layer (OSL) update, and a few assorted updates

xen/grant-table: guard gnttab_suspend/resume with CONFIG_HIBERNATE_CALLBACKS
In current linux.git, gnttab_suspend() and gnttab_resume() are defined and declared unconditionally. However, their only in-tree callers reside in drivers/xen/manage.c, which are guarded by CONFIG_HIBERNATE_CALLBACKS. Match the helper scope to their callers by wrapping the definitions in CONFIG_HIBERNATE_CALLBACKS and providing no-op stubs in the header. This fixes the config-scope mismatch and reduces the code footprint when hibernation callbacks are disabled. xen/manage: unwind partial shutdown watcher setup on error
setup_shutdown_watcher() registers shutdown_watch first, then the sysrq watch, and finally publishes the supported feature-* nodes in xenstore. If sysrq watch registration fails, or xenbus_printf() fails after one or more feature nodes were created, the function returns immediately without undoing the earlier setup. This leaves the system in a partially initialized state, with registered watches and/or stale xenstore entries despite the function reporting failure. Unwind the partial setup before returning an error by unregistering any watches that were already registered and removing feature nodes that were already published. ACPI: PAD: xen: Convert to a platform driver
In all cases in which a struct acpi_driver is used for binding a driver to an ACPI device object, a corresponding platform device is created by the ACPI core and that device is regarded as a proper representation of underlying hardware. Accordingly, a struct platform_driver should be used by driver code to bind to that device. There are multiple reasons why drivers should not bind directly to ACPI device objects [1]. Overall, it is better to bind drivers to platform devices than to their ACPI companions, so convert the Xen ACPI processor aggregator device (PAD) driver to a platform one. While this is not expected to alter functionality, it changes sysfs layout and so it will be visible to user space. PCI: use generic driver_override infrastructure
When a driver is probed through __driver_attach(), the bus' match()
callback is called without the device lock held, thus accessing the
driver_override field without a lock, which can cause a UAF.
Fix this by using the driver-core driver_override infrastructure taking
care of proper locking internally.
Note that calling match() from __driver_attach() without the device lock
held is intentional. [1]

xen/privcmd: add boot control for restricted usage in domU
When running in an unprivileged domU under Xen, the privcmd driver is restricted to allow only hypercalls against a target domain, for which the current domU is acting as a device model. Add a boot parameter "unrestricted" to allow all hypercalls (the hypervisor will still refuse destructive hypercalls affecting other guests). Make this new parameter effective only in case the domU wasn't started using secure boot, as otherwise hypercalls targeting the domU itself might result in violating the secure boot functionality. This is achieved by adding another lockdown reason, which can be tested to not being set when applying the "unrestricted" option. xen/privcmd: restrict usage in unprivileged domU
The Xen privcmd driver allows to issue arbitrary hypercalls from
user space processes. This is normally no problem, as access is
usually limited to root and the hypervisor will deny any hypercalls
affecting other domains.
In case the guest is booted using secure boot, however, the privcmd
driver would be enabling a root user process to modify e.g. kernel
memory contents, thus breaking the secure boot feature.
The only known case where an unprivileged domU is really needing to
use the privcmd driver is the case when it is acting as the device
model for another guest. In this case all hypercalls issued via the
privcmd driver will target that other guest.
Fortunately the privcmd driver can already be locked down to allow
only hypercalls targeting a specific domain, but this mode can be
activated from user land only today.
The target domain can be obtained from Xenstore, so when not running
in dom0 restrict the privcmd driver to that target domain from the
beginning, resolving the potential problem of breaking secure boot.
This is XSA-482

dma-mapping: Separate DMA sync issuing and completion waiting
Currently, arch_sync_dma_for_cpu and arch_sync_dma_for_device always wait for the completion of each DMA buffer. That is, issuing the DMA sync and waiting for completion is done in a single API call. For scatter-gather lists with multiple entries, this means issuing and waiting is repeated for each entry, which can hurt performance. Architectures like ARM64 may be able to issue all DMA sync operations for all entries first and then wait for completion together. To address this, arch_sync_dma_for_* now batches DMA operations and performs a flush afterward. On ARM64, the flush is implemented with a dsb instruction in arch_sync_dma_flush(). On other architectures, arch_sync_dma_flush() is currently a nop. xen/xenbus: better handle backend crash
When the backend domain crashes, coordinated device cleanup is not possible (as it involves waiting for the backend state change). In that case, toolstack forcefully removes frontend xenstore entries. xenbus_dev_changed() handles this case, and triggers device cleanup. It's possible that toolstack manages to connect new device in that place, before xenbus_dev_changed() notices the old one is missing. If that happens, new one won't be probed and will forever remain in XenbusStateInitialising. Fix this by checking the frontend's state in Xenstore. In case it has been reset to XenbusStateInitialising by Xen tools, consider this being the result of an unplug+plug operation. It's important that cleanup on such unplug doesn't modify Xenstore entries (especially the "state" key) as it belong to the new device to be probed - changing it would derail establishing connection to the new backend (most likely, closing the device before it was even connected). Handle this case by setting new xenbus_device->vanished flag to true, and check it before changing state entry. And even if xenbus_dev_changed() correctly detects the device was forcefully removed, the cleanup handling is still racy. Since this whole handling doesn't happened in a single Xenstore transaction, it's possible that toolstack might put a new device there already. Avoid re-creating the state key (which in the case of loosing the race would actually close newly attached device). The problem does not apply to frontend domain crash, as this case involves coordinated cleanup. Problem originally reported at https://lore.kernel.org/xen-devel/aOZvivyZ9YhVWDLN@mail-itl/T/#t, including reproduction steps.
