mem_cgroup_oom() passes an uninitialized "locked" to memcg1_oom_prepare()
and reads it back in memcg1_oom_finish():
bool locked, ret;
...
if (!memcg1_oom_prepare(memcg, &locked))
return false;
ret = mem_cgroup_out_of_memory(memcg, mask, order);
memcg1_oom_finish(memcg, locked);
This relies on memcg1_oom_prepare() setting *locked whenever it returns
true. The CONFIG_MEMCG_V1=y version does, but the stub used when
CONFIG_MEMCG_V1=n returns true without touching *locked, so
memcg1_oom_finish() consumes an uninitialized value. On a memcg OOM this
is reported by UBSAN:
UBSAN: invalid-load in mm/memcontrol.c:1932:27
load of value 0 is not a valid value for type 'bool' (aka '_Bool')
Initialize *locked to false in the stub; with cgroup v1 compiled out there
is no OOM lock to take.

To resolve the dying memcg issue, we need to reparent LRU folios of child
memcg to its parent memcg. This could cause problems for non-hierarchical
stats.
As Yosry Ahmed pointed out:
In short, if memory is charged to a dying cgroup at the time of
reparenting, when the memory gets uncharged the stats updates will occur
at the parent. This will update both hierarchical and non-hierarchical
stats of the parent, which would corrupt the parent's non-hierarchical
stats (because those counters were never incremented when the memory was
charged).
Now we have the following two types of non-hierarchical stats, and they
are only used in CONFIG_MEMCG_V1:
a. memcg->vmstats->state_local[i]
b. pn->lruvec_stats->state_local[i]
To ensure that these non-hierarchical stats work properly, we need to
reparent these non-hierarchical stats after reparenting LRU folios. To
this end, this commit makes the following preparations:
1. implement reparent_state_local() to reparent non-hierarchical stats
2. make css_killed_work_fn() to be called in rcu work, and implement
get_non_dying_memcg_start() and get_non_dying_memcg_end() to avoid race
between mod_memcg_state()/mod_memcg_lruvec_state()
and reparent_state_local()

We currently have two different sets of helpers for getting or putting the
private IDs' refcount for order 0 and large folios. This is redundant.
Just use one and always acquire the refcount of the swapout folio size
unless it's zero, and put the refcount using the folio size if the charge
failed, since the folio size can't change. Then there is no need to
update the refcount for tail pages.
Same for freeing, then only one pair of get/put helper is needed now.
The performance might be slightly better, too: both "inc unless zero" and
"add unless zero" use the same cmpxchg implementation. For large folios,
we saved an atomic operation. And for both order 0 and large folios, we
saved a branch.

Patch series "memcg: separate private and public ID namespaces".
The memory cgroup subsystem maintains a private ID infrastructure that
is decoupled from the cgroup IDs. This private ID system exists because
some kernel objects (like swap entries and shadow entries in the
workingset code) can outlive the cgroup they were associated with.
The motivation is best described in commit 73f576c04b ("mm:
memcontrol: fix cgroup creation failure after many small jobs").
Unfortunately, some in-kernel users (DAMON, LRU gen debugfs interface,
shrinker debugfs) started exposing these private IDs to userspace.
This is problematic because:
1. The private IDs are internal implementation details that could change
2. Userspace already has access to cgroup IDs through the cgroup
filesystem
3. Using different ID namespaces in different interfaces is confusing
This series cleans up the memcg ID infrastructure by:
1. Explicitly marking the private ID APIs with "private" in their names
to make it clear they are for internal use only (swap/workingset)
2. Making the public cgroup ID APIs (mem_cgroup_id/mem_cgroup_get_from_id)
unconditionally available
3. Converting DAMON, LRU gen, and shrinker debugfs interfaces to use
the public cgroup IDs instead of the private IDs
4. Removing the now-unused wrapper functions and renaming the public
APIs for clarity
After this series:
- mem_cgroup_private_id() / mem_cgroup_from_private_id() are used for
internal kernel objects that outlive their cgroup (swap, workingset)
- mem_cgroup_id() / mem_cgroup_get_from_id() return the public cgroup ID
(from cgroup_id()) for use in userspace-facing interfaces
This patch (of 8):
The memory cgroup maintains a private ID infrastructure decoupled from the
cgroup IDs for swapout records and shadow entries. The main motivation of
this private ID infra is best described in the commit 73f576c04b ("mm:
memcontrol: fix cgroup creation failure after many small jobs").
Unfortunately some users have started exposing these private IDs to the
userspace where they should have used the cgroup IDs which are already
exposed to the userspace. Let's rename the memcg ID APIs to explicitly
mark them private.
No functional change is intended.

In commit 66d60c428b ("mm: memcg: move legacy memcg event code into
memcontrol-v1.c"), the static do_memsw_account() function was moved from a
.c file to a .h file. Unfortunately, the traditional inline keyword
wasn't added. If a file (e.g., a unit test) includes the .h file, but
doesn't refer to do_memsw_account(), it will get a warning like:
mm/memcontrol-v1.h:41:13: warning: unused function 'do_memsw_account' [-Wunused-function]

Patch series "memcg: further decouple v1 code from v2".
Some of the v1 code is still in v2 code base due to v1 fields in the
struct memcg_vmstats_percpu. This field decouples those fileds from v2
struct and move all the related code into v1 only code base.
This patch (of 7):
At the moment struct memcg_vmstats_percpu contains two v1 only fields
which consumes memory even when CONFIG_MEMCG_V1 is not enabled. In
addition there are v1 only functions accessing them and are in the main
memcontrol source file and can not be moved to v1 only source file due to
these fields. Let's move these fields into their own struct. Later
patches will move the functions accessing them to v1 source file and only
allocate these fields when CONFIG_MEMCG_V1 is enabled.

Move out the legacy cgroup v1 socket memory accounting code into

This commit introduces three new functions: memcg1_tcpmem_active(),
memcg1_charge_skmem() and memcg1_uncharge_skmem(), which contain all
cgroup v1-specific code and become trivial if CONFIG_MEMCG_V1 isn't set.
Note, that !!memcg->tcpmem_pressure check in
mem_cgroup_under_socket_pressure() can't be easily moved into
memcontrol-v1.h without including memcontrol-v1.h from memcontrol.h which
isn't a good idea, so it's better to just #ifdef it.

Patch series "mm: memcg: put cgroup v1-specific memcg data under
CONFIG_MEMCG_V1".
This patchset puts all cgroup v1's members of struct mem_cgroup, struct
mem_cgroup_per_node and struct task_struct under the CONFIG_MEMCG_V1
config option. If cgroup v1 support is not required (and it's true for
many cgroup users these days), it allows to save a bit of memory and
compile out some code, some of which is on relatively hot paths. It also
structures the code a bit better by grouping cgroup v1-specific stuff in
one place.
This patch (of 9):
memcg_account_kmem() consists of a trivial statistics change via
mod_memcg_state() call and a relatively large memcg1-specific part.
Let's factor out the mod_memcg_state() call and move the rest into the
mm/memcontrol-v1.c file. Also rename memcg_account_kmem() into
memcg1_account_kmem() for consistency.

who are still using cgroup v1 should turn it on.

Please note, that not all cgroup v1's memory controller code is guarded
yet (but most of it), it's a subject for some follow-up work.

Patch series "mm: memcg: separate legacy cgroup v1 code and put under
config option", v2.
Cgroups v2 have been around for a while and many users have fully adopted
them, so they never use cgroups v1 features and functionality. Yet they
have to "pay" for the cgroup v1 support anyway:
1) the kernel binary contains an unused cgroup v1 code,
2) some code paths have additional checks which are not needed,
3) some common structures like task_struct and mem_cgroup contain unused
cgroup v1-specific members.
Cgroup v1's memory controller has a number of features that are not
supported by cgroup v2 and their implementation is pretty much self
contained. Most notably, these features are: soft limit reclaim, oom
handling in userspace, complicated event notification system, charge
migration. Cgroup v1-specific code in memcontrol.c is close to 4k lines
in size and it's intervened with generic and cgroup v2-specific code.
It's a burden on developers and maintainers.
This patchset aims to solve these problems by:
1) moving cgroup v1-specific memcg code to the new mm/memcontrol-v1.c file,
2) putting definitions shared by memcontrol.c and memcontrol-v1.c into the
mm/memcontrol-v1.h header,
3) introducing the CONFIG_MEMCG_V1 config option, turned off by default,
4) making memcontrol-v1.c to compile only if CONFIG_MEMCG_V1 is set.
If CONFIG_MEMCG_V1 is not set, cgroup v1 memory controller is still available
for mounting, however no memory-specific control knobs are present.
This patch (of 14):
This patch introduces the mm/memcontrol-v1.c source file which will be
used for all legacy (cgroup v1) memory cgroup code. It also introduces
mm/memcontrol-v1.h to keep declarations shared between mm/memcontrol.c and
mm/memcontrol-v1.c.
As of now, let's compile it if CONFIG_MEMCG is set, similar to
mm/memcontrol.c. Later on it can be switched to use a separate config
option, so that the legacy code won't be compiled if not required.
