f2fs-for-7.2-rc1
In this round, the changes primarily focus on filesystem error reporting, reducing memory footprint by reverting in-memory data structures used for runtime validation, honoring FDP hints, and adding trace and debug logs. In addition, there are critical bug fixes resolving out-of-bounds read vulnerabilities in inline directory and ACL handling, potential deadlocks in balance_fs, use-after-free issues in atomic writes, and false data/node type assignments in large sections. Enhancement: - Revert in-memory sit version and block bitmaps - support to report fserror - add trace_f2fs_fault_report - add iostat latency tracking for direct IO - add logs in f2fs_disable_checkpoint() - honor per-I/O write streams for direct writes - map data writes to FDP streams - skip inode folio lookup for cached overwrite - skip direct I/O iostat context when disabled - revert "check in-memory block bitmap" - revert "check in-memory sit version bitmap" Bug fix: - optimize representative type determination in GC - fix incorrect FI_NO_EXTENT handling in __destroy_extent_node() - fix potential deadlock in f2fs_balance_fs() - fix potential deadlock in gc_merge path of f2fs_balance_fs() - atomic: fix UAF issue on f2fs_inode_info.atomic_inode - fix missing read bio submission on large folio error - pass correct iostat type for single node writes - fix to do sanity check on f2fs_get_node_folio_ra() - validate orphan inode entry count - keep atomic write retry from zeroing original data - read COW data with the original inode during atomic write - validate inline dentry name lengths before conversion - validate dentry name length before lookup compares it - reject setattr size changes on large folio files - revert "remove non-uptodate folio from the page cache in move_data_block" - validate ACL entry sizes in f2fs_acl_from_disk() - bound i_inline_xattr_size for non-inline-xattr inodes - fix listxattr handling of corrupted xattr entries - fix to round down start offset of fallocate for pin file -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEE00UqedjCtOrGVvQiQBSofoJIUNIFAmo5sQwACgkQQBSofoJI UNIB7g/+IMAr2UVWdpZ88Uho58GvkkIuZceoZoPuSfUi1hTy0o4+wxeo2ecO06v6 pDlxivkWXRDpdW1iXbUqcmk2HKEsM3ysWb6jvsFXz+eC4QeWKQJ2uZTyLpEVpW2j phXv3TwENPEkku2Mncv907hqUZG/SBxJ2H7jcxb0jHRoaLUwZHuGF0VU/MEodyuy ZJifGI3BMwm7Gu2GXwuliDBjbUHRaBs+8kYQ21NZGv0FuQsCNQ+bLhWz3q4FVfg6 nt5FStKgfoKPHIhamltP6uc4E4KlNDtFgKxluEfzrVqxqvHvUpBxj718DtZLbpNN zD6PUHCI0MU0L7qW+RVJx8TOaceYB5xHVcNi8d+CDQPCJgG0LV0ilykqzQ4LRSob JcPIjEVkrIgNSzYh/PcDHkUBZmt3MiZZf6xaxviqxDoPqyY6TFATF27ZIZbc7jSa hF4XO6mNtbDLhSIMrFUXBnGfnKvIK42OyM5aFLEMxBm7akYYr64h+r6mR+apjDb1 4FQ1YIuKfIHm7DuphUiazmyOV7P4kcOGYbqyiOk/HNxf6Cc3/kOXKTRZq00ORNbX X0FXUOy94xrrjdqoWTldv2o4I49zf8RAEBNLAxDneV2qXsITQtsHWUXp5BbKdA0Q 7nyUBUTOdDvUq3qyXXA9BIKWdTr0XeGGp/z8rrVR0aT6ksqiTzM= =YvkR -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'f2fs-for-7.2-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jaegeuk/f2fs Pull f2fs updates from Jaegeuk Kim: "The changes primarily focus on filesystem error reporting, reducing memory footprint by reverting in-memory data structures used for runtime validation, honoring FDP hints, and adding trace and debug logs. Merge tag 'erofs-for-7.2-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/xiang/erofs
Pull erofs updates from Gao Xiang:
"The most notable change is the removal of the fscache backend: it has
been deprecated for almost two years, mainly because EROFS file-backed
mounts and fanotify pre-content hooks (together with erofs-utils) now
provide better functionality and simpler codebase. In addition,
fscache has depended on netfslib for years, which is undesirable for
EROFS since it is a local filesystem. More details in [1].
In addition, sparse support has been added to the pcluster layout,
which is helpful for large sparse AI datasets, and map requests for
chunk-based inodes have been optimized to be more efficient as well.
There are also the usual fixes and cleanups.
Summary:
- Report more consecutive chunks of the same type for
each iomap request
- Add sparse support for the pcluster layout
- Update the EROFS documentation overview
- Remove the deprecated fscache backend
- Various fixes and cleanups"

erofs: remove fscache backend entirely
EROFS over fscache was introduced to provide image lazy pulling functionality. After the feature landed, the fscache subsystem made netfs a new hard dependency, which is unexpected for a local filesystem and has an kernel-defined caching hierarchy which could be inflexible compared to the fanotify pre-content hooks. Therefore, this feature has been deprecated for almost two years. As EROFS file-backed mounts and fanotify pre-content hooks both upstream for a while and already providing equivalent functionality (erofs-utils has supported fanotify pre-content hooks), let's remove the fscache backend now. The main application of this feature is Nydus [1], and they plan to move to use fanotify pre-content hooks in the near future too. I hope this patch can be merged into Linux 7.2, which is also motivated by newly found implementation issues [2][3] that are not worth investigating given the deprecation and limited development resources. The associated fscache/cachefiles cleanup patch will follow separately through the vfs tree (netfs) later: it seems fine since the codebase is isolated by CONFIG_CACHEFILES_ONDEMAND. Asides of the avalanche of LLM-driven fixes, there are a couple of
big changes this cycle: - negative dentry and symlink cache - a way out of the unkillable "io_wait_event_killable" (because it looped around waiting for the request flush to come back from server; this has been bugging syzcaller folks since forever): I'm still not 100% sure about this patch, but I think it's as good as we'll ever get, and will keep testing a bit further in the coming weeks The rest is more noisy than usual, but shouldn't cause any trouble. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEE/IPbcYBuWt0zoYhOq06b7GqY5nAFAmo34aAACgkQq06b7GqY 5nDn4g/9GuPXA8CLoHaRGToNvQhgTVjqKlqHA94kicLX3EFd9xgapu22kPUHa1Li 94bceMtyvCcCNkdzPVcQUEIUo4O7PC20u6ljxulSqU1UxwwhWsIiLMwoZi8gJFcq LLAoa4v/cY3pGYru1SHoVo31rh0AWN+y4V6Xc7uQvHIFANlMEcMLkGvlM8RJXVk2 3pMWj4jIIksQ1JlRc/NM2Eysvj5Wr6QksULvRNPCRj0jTvHBxuFPWz6WEIz26W21 h8y9n1bZttwoECL/I8vPzKu4atEXgDUTj/fRhfR0EfxwU/fRFUrbbfGYWOEBoLrs BHtDNy2X7vfg6TCqyxWByxDODgz2NPcV81JyPoexDCyAVfObwf+xzHOUgHeZaewa VYFV59fNWKRw0knzHZWdgNs9NUdCiaCO8qagVI2gWqjP2guCfCASfTwYMAqOL5LI ESEyzIoRYYcCw0BbIYiUw+cf4mHzA4tyxy/ST7ZpvHhE3yuEk3gzGiX0Yr/0pJqF VyRa2qzJsImCWaiS2Ex3VVimzaN1x7bAganFqzcxklK5qvdfT9nDI1hjjFPKsqeD zmDBfOCySN1KmTFopL2+tkLwLRXby/TRGPXZU8tDcqWWzT71I2sm01u8J3YS5LC0 z8CaPKToZl6DfQ+rWkdQe8NDFdsPvmc8SICnyQsv6jFl8nkCPUo= =sgkZ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag '9p-for-7.2-rc1' of https://github.com/martinetd/linux Pull 9p updates from Dominique Martinet: "Asides of the avalanche of LLM-driven fixes, there are a couple of big changes this cycle: - negative dentry and symlink cache - a way out of the unkillable "io_wait_event_killable" (because it looped around waiting for the request flush to come back from server; this has been bugging syzcaller folks since forever): I'm still not 100% sure about this patch, but I think it's as good as we'll ever get, and will keep testing a bit further in the coming weeks The rest is more noisy than usual, but shouldn't cause any trouble" * tag '9p-for-7.2-rc1' of https://github.com/martinetd/linux: 9p: Add missing read barrier in virtio zero-copy path net/9p: Replace strlen() strcpy() pair with strscpy() 9p: skip nlink update in cacheless mode to fix WARN_ON net/9p: fix race condition on rdma->state in trans_rdma.c 9p: v9fs_file_do_lock: replace WARN_ONCE with p9_debug 9p: Enable symlink caching in page cache 9p: Set default negative dentry retention time for cache=loose 9p: Add mount option for negative dentry cache retention 9p: Cache negative dentries for lookup performance 9p: avoid returning ERR_PTR(0) from mkdir operations 9p: avoid putting oldfid in p9_client_walk() error path net/9p: fix infinite loop in p9_client_rpc on fatal signal docs/filesystems/9p: fix broken external links 9p: invalidate readdir buffer on seek 9p: use kvzalloc for readdir buffer net/9p/usbg: Constify struct configfs_item_operations |

9p: Add mount option for negative dentry cache retention
Introduce a new mount option, negtimeout, for v9fs that allows users to specify how long negative dentries are retained in the cache. The retention time can be set in milliseconds (e.g. negtimeout=10000 for a 10secs retention time) or a negative value (e.g. negtimeout=-1) to keep negative entries until the buffer cache management removes them. For consistency reasons, this option should only be used in exclusive or read-only mount scenarios, aligning with the cache=loose usage. Description for this pull request:
- Harden handling of malformed on-disk metadata. It adds stricter
validation for attributes, attribute lists, index roots and entries,
EA entries, mapping pairs, and $LogFile restart areas. These changes
fix several out-of-bounds access, integer overflow, and inconsistent
metadata handling issues.
- Preventing a writeback deadlock involving extent MFT records
- Fixing resource leaks in fill_super() failure paths and the name cache
- Serializing volume label access and improving its error handling
- Fixing mapping-pairs decoding bounds and LCN overflow checks
- Keeping resident index root metadata consistent during resize
- Fixing the reported size of symbolic links
- Avoiding an unnecessary allocation for resident inline data
- Adds support for following and creating Windows native symbolic links.
Relative links, absolute links, and junctions are handled, with new
mount options controlling native symlink creation and absolute target
translation. The existing WSL symlink behavior remains the default.
- The unsupported quota code is removed, along with several smaller
cleanups.

Preparatory work for MPAM counter assignment:
- Simplify the error handling path when creating monitor group event
configuration directories
- Make the MBM event filter configurable only on architectures that
support it and expose this with the respective file modes in the event
config
- Disallow the MBA software controller on systems where MBM counters are
assignable, as it requires continuous bandwidth measurement that
assignable counters do not guarantee
- Replace a compile-time Kconfig option for fixed counter assignment
with a per-architecture runtime property, and expose whether the
counter assignment mode is changeable to userspace
- Continue counter allocation across all domains instead of aborting at
the first failure
- Document that automatic MBM counter assignment is best effort and may
not assign counters to all domains
- Document the behavior of task ID 0 and idle tasks in the resctrl tasks

be marked permanent from outside fs/proc/, and the string emitted
when reading /proc/filesystems is pre-generated and cached instead of
pointer-chasing and printfing entry by entry on every read.
The file is read frequently because libselinux reads it and is linked
into numerous frequently used programs (even ones you would not

"Features:
- Reduce pipe->mutex contention by pre-allocating pages outside the
lock in anon_pipe_write().
anon_pipe_write() called alloc_page() once per page while holding
pipe->mutex. The allocation can sleep doing direct reclaim and runs
memcg charging, which extends the critical section and stalls any
concurrent reader on the same mutex. Now up to 8 pages are
pre-allocated before the mutex is taken, leftovers are recycled
into the per-pipe tmp_page[] cache before unlock, and any remainder
is released after unlock, keeping the allocator out of the critical
section on both sides. On a writers x readers sweep with 64KB
writes against a 1 MB pipe throughput improves 6-28% and average
write latency drops 5-22%; under memory pressure - when the cost of
holding the mutex across reclaim is highest - throughput improves
21-48% and latency drops 17-33%. The microbenchmark is added to
selftests.
- uaccess/sockptr: fix the ignored_trailing logic in
copy_struct_to_user() to behave as documented and the usize check
in copy_struct_from_sockptr() for user pointers, and add
copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer() and copy_struct_to_sockptr()
helpers for upcoming users (IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT, IPPROTO_QUIC).
- bpf: add a sleepable bpf_real_inode() kfunc that resolves the real
inode backing a dentry via d_real_inode(). On overlayfs the inode
attached to the dentry doesn't carry the underlying device
information; this is used by the filesystem restriction BPF program
that was merged into systemd.
- docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems, motivated by
the maintenance burden abandoned and untestable filesystems impose
on VFS developers, blocking infrastructure work like folio
conversions and iomap migration.
Fixes:
- libfs: set SB_I_NOEXEC and SB_I_NODEV by default in init_pseudo()
and drop the now-redundant assignments in callers. This began as a
one-line dma-buf fix for a path_noexec() warning; a pseudo
filesystem has no reason not to set SB_I_NOEXEC. All init_pseudo()
callers were audited: the only visible effect is on dma-buf where
SB_I_NOEXEC silences the warning.
- Handle set_blocksize() failures in legacy filesystems (bfs, hpfs,
qnx4, jfs, befs, affs, isofs, minix, ntfs3, omfs). Mounting a
device with a sector size > PAGE_SIZE crashed roughly half of them;
the rest had the same missing error handling pattern. Plus a
follow-up releasing the superblock buffer_head when setting the
minix v3 block size fails.
- mount: honour SB_NOUSER in the new mount API.
- fs/fcntl: fix a SOFTIRQ-unsafe lock order in fasync signaling by
switching the process-group paths of send_sigio() and send_sigurg()
from read_lock(&tasklist_lock) to RCU, matching the single-PID
path.
- vfs: add an FS_USERNS_DELEGATABLE flag and set it for NFS, fixing
delegated NFS mounts (fsopen() in a container with the mount
performed by a privileged daemon) that broke when non-init
s_user_ns was tied to FS_USERNS_MOUNT.
- selftests/namespaces: fix a hang in nsid_test where an unreaped
grandchild kept the TAP pipe write-end open, a waitpid(-1) race in
listns_efault_test, and a false FAIL on kernels without listns()
where the tests should SKIP.
- filelock: fix the break_lease() stub signature for
CONFIG_FILE_LOCKING=n.
- init/initramfs_test: wait for the async initramfs unpacking before
running; the test and do_populate_rootfs() share the parser state.
- fs/coredump: reduce redundant log noise in
validate_coredump_safety().
- iomap: pass the correct length to fserror_report_io() in
__iomap_write_begin().
- backing-file: fix the backing_file_open() kerneldoc.
Cleanups:
- initramfs: refactor the cpio hex header parsing to use hex2bin()
instead of the hand-rolled simple_strntoul() which is reverted, and
extend the initramfs KUnit tests to cover header fields with 0x
prefixes.
- Replace __get_free_pages() and friends with kmalloc()/kzalloc()
across quota, proc, ocfs2/dlm, nilfs2, nfs, nfsd, libfs, jfs, jbd2,
isofs, fuse, select, namespace, configfs, binfmt_misc, bfs, and the
do_mounts init code - part of the larger work of replacing page
allocator calls with kmalloc().
- Use clear_and_wake_up_bit() in unlock_buffer() and
journal_end_buffer_io_sync() instead of open-coding the sequence.
- Drop unused VFS exports: unexport drop_super_exclusive(), remove
start_removing_user_path_at(), and fold __start_removing_path()
into start_removing_path().
- fs/read_write: narrow the __kernel_write() export with
EXPORT_SYMBOL_FOR_MODULES().
- vfs: uapi: retire octal and hex constants in favor of (1 << n) for
the O_ flags. Finding a free bit for a new flag across the
architectures was needlessly hard with the mixed bases.
- dcache: add extra sanity checks of dead dentries in dentry_free()
via a new DENTRY_WARN_ONCE() that also prints d_flags.
- iov_iter: use kmemdup_array() in dup_iter() to harden the
allocation against multiplication overflow.
- fs/pipe: write to ->poll_usage only once.
- vfs: remove an always-taken if-branch in find_next_fd().
- dcache: use kmalloc_flex() for struct external_name in __d_alloc().
- namei: use QSTR() instead of QSTR_INIT() in path_pts().
- sync_file_range: delete dead S_ISLNK code.
- Comment fixes: retire a stale comment in fget_task_next() and fix
assorted spelling mistakes"

VFS: use wait_var_event for waiting in d_alloc_parallel()
Parallel lookup starts with a call of d_alloc_parallel(). That primitive
either returns a matching hashed dentry or allocates a new one in the
in-lookup state and returns it to the caller. Once the caller is done
with lookup, it indicates so either by call of d_{splice_alias,add}()
or by call of d_done_lookup(); at that point dentry leaves the in-lookup
state.
If d_alloc_parallel() finds a matching in-lookup dentry, it must wait for
that dentry to leave the in-lookup state, one way or another. Currently
by supplying wait_queue_head to d_alloc_parallel(). If d_alloc_parallel()
creates a new in-lookup dentry, the address of that wait_queue_head is stored
in ->d_wait of new dentry and stays there while it's in the in-lookup;
subsequent d_alloc_parallel() will wait on the queue found in the matching
in-lookup dentry. Transition out of in-lookup state wakes waiters on that
queue (if any).
That works, but the calling conventions are inconvenient - the caller must
supply wait_queue_head and make sure that it survives at least until the new
in-lookup dentry leaves the in-lookup state. That amounts to boilerplate
in the d_alloc_parallel() callers that are followed by a call of d_lookup_done()
in the same function; in cases like nfs asynchronous unlink it gets worse than
that.
This patch changes d_alloc_parallel() to use wake_up_var_locked() to
wake up waiters, and wait_var_event_spinlock() to wait. dentry->d_lock
is used for synchronisation as it is already held and the relevant
times.
That eliminates the need of caller-supplied wait_queue_head, simplifying
the calling conventions. Better yet, we only need one bit of information
stored in dentry itself: whether there are any waiters to be woken up,
and that can be easily stored in ->d_flags; ->d_wait goes away.
The reason we need that bit (DCACHE_LOOKUP_WAITERS) is that with wait_var
machinery the queues are shared with all kinds of stuff and there's
no way tell if any of the waiters have anything to do with our dentry;
most of the time none of them will be relevant, so we need to avoid the
pointless wakeups.
Another benefit of the new scheme comes from the fact that wakeups
have to be done outside of write-side critical areas of ->i_dir_seq;
with the old scheme we need to carry the value picked from ->d_wait from
__d_lookup_unhash() to the place where we actually wake the waiters up.
Now we can just leave DCACHE_LOOKUP_WAITERS in ->d_flags until we get
to doing wakeups - that's done within the same ->d_lock scope, so we
are fine; new bit is accessed only under ->d_lock and it's seen only
on dentries with DCACHE_PAR_LOOKUP in ->d_flags.
__d_lookup_unhash() no longer needs to re-init ->d_lru. That was
previously shared (in a union) with ->d_wait but ->d_wait is now gone
so it no longer corrupts ->d_lru.

f2fs: map data writes to FDP streams
From: Wenjie Qi <qiwenjie@xiaomi.com> F2FS already classifies DATA writes using its existing hot, warm and cold temperature policy, but it only passes that intent down as a write hint. That hint alone is not sufficient for NVMe FDP placement, because the current NVMe command path consumes `bio->bi_write_stream` rather than `bio->bi_write_hint` when selecting a placement ID. When the target block device exposes write streams, map the existing F2FS DATA temperature classes onto stream IDs and set `bio->bi_write_stream` for both buffered and direct writes. If the device exposes no write streams, keep the current behavior by leaving the stream unset. The stream mapping is evaluated against the target block device of each bio, so the existing per-device fallback behavior stays unchanged for multi-device filesystems. Existing blkzoned restrictions also remain in place. The mapping is intentionally small and deterministic: - 1 stream: hot, warm and cold all use stream 1 - 2 streams: hot/warm use 1, cold uses 2 - 3+ streams: hot uses 1, warm uses 2, cold uses 3 Signed-off-by: Wenjie Qi <qwjhust@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Chao Yu <chao@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Jaegeuk Kim <jaegeuk@kernel.org> |

docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems
This document is motivated by the ongoing maintenance burden that abandoned and untestable filesystems impose on VFS developers, blocking infrastructure changes such as folio conversions and iomap migration. This week alone, two new filesystems were proposed on linux-fsdevel (VMUFAT and FTRFS), highlighting the need for documented guidelines that new filesystem authors can refer to before submission. Multiple recent discussions on linux-fsdevel have touched on the criteria for merging new filesystems and for deprecating old ones, covering topics such as modern VFS interface adoption, testability, userspace utilities, maintainer commitment, and user base viability. Add Documentation/filesystems/adding-new-filesystems.rst describing the technical requirements and community expectations for merging a new filesystem into the kernel. The guidelines cover: - Alternatives to consider before proposing a new in-kernel filesystem - Technical requirements: modern VFS interfaces (iomap, folios, fs_context mount API), testability, and userspace utilities - Community expectations: identified maintainers, demonstrated commitment, sustained backing, and a clear user base - Ongoing obligations after merging, including the risk of deprecation for unmaintained filesystems Link: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-fsdevel/20260411151155.321214-1-adrianmcmenamin@gmail.com/ Link: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-fsdevel/20260413142357.515792-1-aurelien@hackers.camp/ Link: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-fsdevel/yndtg2jbj55fzd2kkhsmel4pp5ll5xfvfiaqh24tdct3jiqosd@jzbfzf3rrxrd/ Link: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-fsdevel/20260124091742.GA43313@macsyma.local/ Link: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20260111140345.3866-1-linkinjeon@kernel.org/ Cc: Christian Brauner <brauner@kernel.org> Cc: Alexander Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Cc: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Cc: Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu> Cc: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Cc: Darrick J. fs/resctrl: Document tasks file behaviour for task id 0 and idle tasks
When 0 is written to the tasks file it is interpreted as the current task in rdtgroup_move_task(). Each CPU's idle task has task_struct::pid set to 0 and, on x86, task_struct::closid to RESCTRL_RESERVED_CLOSID and task_struct::rmid to RESCTRL_RESERVED_RMID. Equivalently, on MPAM platforms, thread_info::mpam_partid_pmg is encoded with PARTID and PMG set to RESCTRL_RESERVED_CLOSID and RESCTRL_RESERVED_RMID, respectively. As there is no interface to change these from the default, the resctrl configuration for the idle tasks is fixed and they always behave equivalently to a task in the default tasks file and so take their configuration from the cpus/cpus_list files. On read of the tasks file, show_rdt_tasks() filters out any 0 PID. Hence, a task id of 0 is never shown in the tasks file and the idle tasks are not represented either. x86,fs/resctrl: Create 'event_filter' files read only if they're not configurable
When the counter assignment mode is mbm_event resctrl assumes the MBM events are configurable and exposes the 'event_filter' files. These files live at info/L3_MON/event_configs/<event>/event_filter and are used to display and set the event configuration. The MPAM architecture has support for configuring the memory bandwidth utilization (MBWU) counters to only count reads or only count writes. However, in MPAM, this event filtering support is optional in the hardware (and not yet implemented in the MPAM driver) but MBM counter assignment is always possible for MPAM MBWU counters. In order to support mbm_event mode with MPAM, create the 'event_filter' files read only if the event configuration can't be changed. A user can still chmod the file and so also return early with an error from event_filter_write(). Introduce a new monitor property, mbm_cntr_configurable, to indicate whether or not assignable MBM counters are configurable. On x86, set this to true whenever mbm_cntr_assignable is true to keep existing behaviour. Documentation: filesystems: cramfs: correct stale hard-link and endianness claims
Two paragraphs in cramfs.rst have been misleading for a long time: - "Hard links are supported, but hard linked files will still have a link count of 1": mkcramfs does not preserve hard links; it deduplicates by content (eliminate_doubles()). Two names for the same on-disk inode in the source tree become two separate (content-shared) entries in the image, and cramfs always reports a link count of 1. - "Currently, cramfs must be written and read with architectures of the same endianness ... PAGE_SIZE == 4096 ... is a bug, but it hasn't been decided what the best fix is": the endianness situation has been settled for years -- the kernel checks for CRAMFS_MAGIC_WEND in cramfs_fill_super() and refuses the mount, and mkcramfs has gained -B / -L for producing images of the opposite endianness from the build host (useful for cross-builds, but the reader still needs to match). Fixing livelocks in shrink_dcache_tree()
If shrink_dcache_tree() finds a dentry in the middle of being killed by another thread, it has to wait until the victim finishes dying, gets detached from the tree and ceases to pin its parent. The way we used to deal with that amounted to busy-wait; unfortunately, it's not just inefficient but can lead to reliably reproducible hard livelocks. Solved by having shrink_dentry_tree() attach a completion to such dentry, with dentry_unlist() calling complete() on all objects attached to it. With a bit of care it can be done without growing struct dentry or adding overhead in normal case. NFSD 7.1 Release Notes
Benjamin Coddington contributed filehandle signing to defend against filehandle-guessing attacks. The server now appends a SipHash-2-4 MAC to each filehandle when the new "sign_fh" export option is enabled. NFSD then verifies filehandles received from clients against the expected MAC; mismatches return NFS error STALE. Chuck Lever converted the entire NLMv4 server-side XDR layer from hand-written C to xdrgen-generated code, spanning roughly thirty patches. XDR functions are generally boilerplate code and are easy to get wrong. The goals of this conversion are improved memory safety, lower maintenance burden, and groundwork for eventual Rust code generation for these functions. Dai Ngo improved pNFS block/SCSI layout robustness with two related changes. SCSI persistent reservation fencing is now tracked per client and per device via an xarray, to avoid both redundant preempt operations on devices already fenced and a potential NFSD deadlock when all nfsd threads are waiting for a layout return. The remaining patches deliver scalability and infrastructure improvements. Sincere thanks to all contributors, reviewers, testers, and bug reporters who participated in the v7.1 NFSD development cycle. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEKLLlsBKG3yQ88j7+M2qzM29mf5cFAmnlF50ACgkQM2qzM29m f5dfHBAAi2o1i9/RA6fmxi2qSV7tkg79viuGFRj3c4cjiW8ZqQXos63zmy6BNMFG joEoirdryUETkrrckXP81HKGSWBQqYjaXeklOw8dggQ8g72HGiqcoT3Ua7L9S7A8 /Db6IwZnJcehHO8XwHV4jSAfIZuvC0iiK02tVrVe/l/9GWcG+bS340GgE9Es2IAW copBGlTwQah+eRvy2hP+Eo3vUTP8Rdebp9iYFI12xqx2x3LquFR01PpjCzotqAvV AcvCPa/AGoSOjcL8idloL8F8mSaOCyx15YJH0lm3hRsPtS/VyXWjKvcejWUh/7PH gHi+5VTsSKbUBj3PJQZU6rBQ67KnwVLZ33KkIF2ZNGllvK0yDGM0UfX/TuaEPjUV 6N0UkRprCHJdrULt9XMXmX3Ddnz1xbYT8CaeIDObw3Ix7SJKedvlLTjvsYCYtsQn 5pkHUuHmr/YAF4AQi/JI4ubZhZ+K3YytNS8YiMUkBWDbPoKzo2yrkzwjGjHdUp0y l8LfEjePAcIpuFQZegERA9CnjIeKb66DJe8da0EwtreY+sejm/S8zbBUhMkXjo6u QwdXXeLX3/zni6Op8vRA5JH//S5ovlQFnkUSvHRItSUrDBRVm+wXD7Vnp9bykKcN leqbSvehnV4PIi0URMvN5ox1WNmsOFIZkv9nv8amyOX8PlRmLoA= =iFl6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'nfsd-7.1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cel/linux Pull nfsd updates from Chuck Lever: - filehandle signing to defend against filehandle-guessing attacks (Benjamin Coddington) The server now appends a SipHash-2-4 MAC to each filehandle when the new "sign_fh" export option is enabled. Pull ntfs resurrection from Namjae Jeon:
"Ever since Kari Argillander’s 2022 report [1] regarding the state of
the ntfs3 driver, I have spent the last 4 years working to provide
full write support and current trends (iomap, no buffer head, folio),
enhanced performance, stable maintenance, utility support including

A busier cycle than I had expected for docs, including:
- Translations: some overdue updates to the Japanese translations, Chinese
translations for some of the Rust documentation, and the beginnings of a
Portuguese translation.
- New documents covering CPU isolation, managed interrupts, debugging
Python gbb scripts, and more.
- More tooling work from Mauro, reducing docs-build warnings, adding self

replace (some of) the mess of kernel-doc regexes, and more.
- Update and synchronize changes.rst and scripts/ver_linux, and put both

mm: add gpu active/reclaim per-node stat counters (v2)
While discussing memcg intergration with gpu memory allocations, it was pointed out that there was no numa/system counters for GPU memory allocations. With more integrated memory GPU server systems turning up, and more requirements for memory tracking it seems we should start closing the gap. Add two counters to track GPU per-node system memory allocations. The first is currently allocated to GPU objects, and the second is for memory that is stored in GPU page pools that can be reclaimed, by the shrinker. mm: add mmap_action_map_kernel_pages[_full]()
A user can invoke mmap_action_map_kernel_pages() to specify that the mapping should map kernel pages starting from desc->start of a specified number of pages specified in an array. In order to implement this, adjust mmap_action_prepare() to be able to return an error code, as it makes sense to assert that the specified parameters are valid as quickly as possible as well as updating the VMA flags to include VMA_MIXEDMAP_BIT as necessary. This provides an mmap_prepare equivalent of vm_insert_pages(). We additionally update the existing vm_insert_pages() code to use range_in_vma() and add a new range_in_vma_desc() helper function for the mmap_prepare case, sharing the code between the two in range_is_subset(). We add both mmap_action_map_kernel_pages() and mmap_action_map_kernel_pages_full() to allow for both partial and full VMA mappings. We update the documentation to reflect the new features. Finally, we update the VMA tests accordingly to reflect the changes. mm: add mmap_action_simple_ioremap()
Currently drivers use vm_iomap_memory() as a simple helper function for I/O remapping memory over a range starting at a specified physical address over a specified length. In order to utilise this from mmap_prepare, separate out the core logic into __simple_ioremap_prep(), update vm_iomap_memory() to use it, and add simple_ioremap_prepare() to do the same with a VMA descriptor object. We also add MMAP_SIMPLE_IO_REMAP and relevant fields to the struct mmap_action type to permit this operation also. We use mmap_action_ioremap() to set up the actual I/O remap operation once we have checked and figured out the parameters, which makes simple_ioremap_prepare() easy to implement. We then add mmap_action_simple_ioremap() to allow drivers to make use of this mode. We update the mmap_prepare documentation to describe this mode. Finally, we update the VMA tests to reflect this change. With the introduction of f_op->mmap_prepare this is no longer the case, as it is invoked prior to actually establishing the mapping. mmap_prepare is not appropriate for this kind of thing as it is called before any merge might take place, and after which an error might occur meaning resources could be leaked. To take this into account, introduce a new vm_ops->mapped callback which is invoked when the VMA is first mapped (though notably - not when it is merged - which is correct and mirrors existing mmap/open/close behaviour). We do better that vm_ops->open() here, as this callback can return an error, at which point the VMA will be unmapped. Note that vm_ops->mapped() is invoked after any mmap action is complete (such as I/O remapping). We intentionally do not expose the VMA at this point, exposing only the fields that could be used, and an output parameter in case the operation needs to update the vma->vm_private_data field. In order to deal with stacked filesystems which invoke inner filesystem's mmap() invocations, add __compat_vma_mapped() and invoke it on vfs_mmap() (via compat_vma_mmap()) to ensure that the mapped callback is handled when an mmap() caller invokes a nested filesystem's mmap_prepare() callback. Update the mmap_prepare documentation to describe the mapped hook and make it clear what its intended use is. The vm_ops->mapped() call is handled by the mmap complete logic to ensure the same code paths are handled by both the compatibility and VMA layers. Additionally, update VMA userland test headers to reflect the change. mm: add documentation for the mmap_prepare file operation callback
This documentation makes it easier for a driver/file system implementer to correctly use this callback. It covers the fundamentals, whilst intentionally leaving the less lovely possible actions one might take undocumented (for instance - the success_hook, error_hook fields in mmap_action). The document also covers the new VMA flags implementation which is the only one which will work correctly with mmap_prepare. for_each_alias(): helper macro for iterating through dentries of given inode
Most of the places using d_alias are loops iterating through all aliases for given inode; introduce a helper macro (for_each_alias(dentry, inode)) and convert open-coded instances of such loop to it. They are easier to read that way and it reduces the noise on the next steps. You _must_ hold inode->i_lock over that thing. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> |

fs/resctrl: Add "*" shorthand to set io_alloc CBM for all domains
Configuring the io_alloc_cbm interface requires an explicit domain ID for each cache domain. On systems with high core counts and numerous cache clusters, this requirement becomes cumbersome for automation and management tasks that aim to apply a uniform policy. Introduce a wildcard domain ID selector "*" for the io_alloc_cbm interface. This enables users to set the same Capacity Bitmask (CBM) across all cache domains in a single operation.
