writeback: Drop I_DIRTY_TIME_EXPIRE
The only use of I_DIRTY_TIME_EXPIRE is to detect in __writeback_single_inode() that inode got there because flush worker decided it's time to writeback the dirty inode time stamps (either because we are syncing or because of age). However we can detect this directly in __writeback_single_inode() and there's no need for the strange propagation with I_DIRTY_TIME_EXPIRE flag. writeback: Fix sync livelock due to b_dirty_time processing
When we are processing writeback for sync(2), move_expired_inodes()
didn't set any inode expiry value (older_than_this). This can result in
writeback never completing if there's steady stream of inodes added to
b_dirty_time list as writeback rechecks dirty lists after each writeback
round whether there's more work to be done. Fix the problem by using
sync(2) start time is inode expiry value when processing b_dirty_time
list similarly as for ordinarily dirtied inodes. This requires some
refactoring of older_than_this handling which simplifies the code
noticeably as a bonus.

Sahitya raised an issue: - prevent meta updates while checkpoint is in progress allocate_segment_for_resize() can cause metapage updates if it requires to change the current node/data segments for resizing. UPSTREAM: gpu/trace: add a gpu total memory usage tracepoint
This change adds the below gpu memory tracepoint:
gpu_mem/gpu_mem_total: track global or proc gpu memory total usages
Per process tracking of total gpu memory usage in the gem layer is not
appropriate and hard to implement with trivial overhead. So for the gfx
device driver layer to track total gpu memory usage both globally and
per process in an easy and uniform way is to integrate the tracepoint in
this patch to the underlying varied implementations of gpu memory
tracking system from vendors.
Putting this tracepoint in the common trace events can not only help
wean the gfx drivers off of debugfs but also greatly help the downstream
Android gpu vendors because debugfs is to be deprecated in the upcoming
Android release. Then the gpu memory tracking of both Android kernel and
the upstream linux kernel can stay closely, which can benefit the whole
kernel eco-system in the long term.

UPSTREAM: random: only read from /dev/random after its pool has received 128 bits
Immediately after boot, we allow reads from /dev/random before its
entropy pool has been fully initialized. Fix this so that we don't
allow this until the blocking pool has received 128 bits.
We do this by repurposing the initialized flag in the entropy pool
struct, and use the initialized flag in the blocking pool to indicate
whether it is safe to pull from the blocking pool.
To do this, we needed to rework when we decide to push entropy from the
input pool to the blocking pool, since the initialized flag for the
input pool was used for this purpose. To simplify things, we no
longer use the initialized flag for that purpose, nor do we use the
entropy_total field any more.

f2fs: support data compression
This patch tries to support compression in f2fs.
- New term named cluster is defined as basic unit of compression, file can
be divided into multiple clusters logically. One cluster includes 4 << n
(n >= 0) logical pages, compression size is also cluster size, each of
cluster can be compressed or not.
- In cluster metadata layout, one special flag is used to indicate cluster
is compressed one or normal one, for compressed cluster, following metadata
maps cluster to [1, 4 << n - 1] physical blocks, in where f2fs stores
data including compress header and compressed data.
- In order to eliminate write amplification during overwrite, F2FS only
support compression on write-once file, data can be compressed only when
all logical blocks in file are valid and cluster compress ratio is lower
than specified threshold.
- To enable compression on regular inode, there are three ways:
* chattr +c file
* chattr +c dir; touch dir/file
* mount w/ -o compress_extension=ext; touch file.ext

RFC: FROMLIST: cpufreq: Add android's 'interactive' governor
https://lkml.org/lkml/2016/9/14/208 Interactive governor has lived in Android sources for a very long time and this commit is based on the code present in following branch: https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/common android-4.4 The Interactive governor is designed for latency-sensitive workloads, such as interactive user interfaces like the mobile phones and tablets. The interactive governor aims to be significantly more responsive to ramp CPU quickly up when CPU-intensive activity begins. Existing governors sample CPU load at a particular rate, typically every X ms and then update the frequency from a work-handler. This can lead to under-powering UI threads for the period of time during which the user begins interacting with a previously-idle system until the next sample period happens. The 'interactive' governor uses a different approach. A real-time thread is used for scaling up, giving the remaining tasks the CPU performance benefit, unlike existing governors which are more likely to schedule ramp-up work to occur after your performance starved tasks have completed. The Android version of interactive governor also checks whether to scale the CPU frequency up soon after coming out of idle. When the CPU comes out of idle, the governor check if the CPU sampling is overdue or not. If yes, it immediately starts the sampling. Otherwise, the utilization hooks from the scheduler handle the sampling later. If the CPU is very busy from exiting idle to when the evaluation happens, then it assumes that the CPU is under-powered and ramps it to MAX speed. If the CPU was not sufficiently busy to immediately ramp to MAX speed, then the governor evaluates the CPU load since the last speed adjustment, choosing the highest value between that longer-term load or the short-term load since idle exit to determine the CPU speed to ramp to. The core of this code is written and maintained (in Android repositories) by Mike Chan and Todd Poyner over a long period of time. Vireshk has made changes to to the governor to align it with the current practices followed with mainline governors, like using utilization hooks from the scheduler and handling kobject (for governor's sysfs directory) in a race free manner. And of course this included general cleanup of the governor as well. UPSTREAM: rss_stat: Add support to detect RSS updates of external mm
When a process updates the RSS of a different process, the rss_stat tracepoint appears in the context of the process doing the update. This can confuse userspace that the RSS of process doing the update is updated, while in reality a different process's RSS was updated. This issue happens in reclaim paths such as with direct reclaim or background reclaim. This patch adds more information to the tracepoint about whether the mm being updated belongs to the current process's context (curr field). We also include a hash of the mm pointer so that the process who the mm belongs to can be uniquely identified (mm_id field). Also vsprintf.c is refactored a bit to allow reuse of hashing code. UPSTREAM: mm: emit tracepoint when RSS changes
Useful to track how RSS is changing per TGID to detect spikes in RSS and
memory hogs. Several Android teams have been using this patch in various
kernel trees for half a year now. Many reported to me it is really
useful so I'm posting it upstream.
Initial patch developed by Tim Murray. Changes I made from original patch:
o Prevent any additional space consumed by mm_struct.
Regarding the fact that the RSS may change too often thus flooding the
traces - note that, there is some "hysterisis" with this already. That
is - We update the counter only if we receive 64 page faults due to
SPLIT_RSS_ACCOUNTING. However, during zapping or copying of pte range,
the RSS is updated immediately which can become noisy/flooding. In a
previous discussion, we agreed that BPF or ftrace can be used to rate
limit the signal if this becomes an issue.
Also note that I added wrappers to trace_rss_stat to prevent compiler
errors where linux/mm.h is included from tracing code, causing errors
such as:
