signal: use scoped user access in __save_altstack()
__save_altstack() and __compat_save_altstack() write three fields with __put_user(), relying on the caller having done access_ok() on the whole signal frame. Each of those writes enables and disables user access on its own, so that check saves nothing. x86 and powerpc already avoid these functions by using unsafe_save_altstack() inside their own user access regions. Use the same helpers here, inside a scoped_user_write_access(), so that every other architecture gets a single range check and a single user access region too. None of those callers is itself inside a user access region, so nothing nests. This is part of getting rid of __get_user() and __put_user() entirely. signal: use scoped user access for old-style sigaction
The old sigaction() system call and its compat counterpart do one
access_ok() on the user structure and then a series of __get_user() or
__put_user() calls on its fields. That was an optimization back when
each of those was a single memory access. These days each of them
enables and disables user access on its own (stac/clac on x86), so the
up-front check saves nothing.
Convert them to scoped_user_{read,write}_access() with
unsafe_{get,put}_user(), which does the range check once and puts a
single stac/clac pair around plain moves.
This is part of getting rid of __get_user() and __put_user() entirely.

tracing fixes for v7.3:
- Fix NULL dereference when copying histogram field variable If event_hist_trigger_parse() creates an action that uses one of pseudo fields for its keys, the hist_data field element will have a NULL for its field member. When looking to match that key, the lookup uses key_field->field->name which will dereference a NULL pointer. Instead use the helper function that handles such cases: expr_field_str(). - Take the trace_types_lock when dropping the buffer_meta reference The tracing_buffer_meta_open() error return drops the trace_array reference with __trace_array_put() instead of trace_array_put() where the former doesn't take the lock and the latter does. - Fix NULL pointer dereference when reading per_cpu/cpuN/buffer_meta These files are created for every possible CPU. But it only contains data for CPUs that have come online. If one is read for a CPU that hasn't come online yet, it triggers a NULL pointer dereference. Have reading of CPUs that have not come on line yet return -ENODEV. - Fix an out-of-bounds shift in the log2 histogram modifier Histograms can take a log2 modifier to have the buckets defined by log2 increments. If a shift is greater than ULONG_MAX or above 2^63, the key falls into a lower order bucket. Use order_base_2() instead of "ilog2(n - 1) + 1" to have all overflowed keys go into the top bucket. - Fix the persistent ring buffer rb_meta_subbuf_idx() accounting The algorithm for finding the index of a sub-buffer in a persistent ring buffer buffer did not take into account the meta data at the beginning of the buffer causing the wrong index to be returned. As rb_subbufs_from_meta() does the proper accounting to find the first sub-buffer, use that function instead of repeating the logic (incorrectly) and make the calculations based off of that. - Fix the symbol name checks for the remote buffer code The remote ring buffer has a build time check to make sure its not using any code that will not be in the hypervisor. For various architectures, there has been false positive reports from this checker. Fix them. - Fix false warning in ring_buffer_map_get_reader() There is a WARN_ON() after rb_get_reader_page() if no reader is returned. But there are legitimate cases where this can happen. Remove the WARN_ON() and also a check that covers one of the legitimate cases that tries to exit out early. There's no need for the check if it just simply allows the return of NULL from rb_get_reader_page(). - Fix the ignored return value from resize_buffer_duplicate_size() Some clean up of the code in tracing_snapshot_write() removed checking the return value of resize_buffer_duplicate_size() and if that failed it would not be detected. - Fix the histogram timestamps for buffered events The histogram timestamps are taken from the events that are recorded. It currently reads ring_buffer_event_time_stamp() but if the event is buffered it does not read it properly. Use tracing_event_time_stamp() which handles both buffered and normal events. - Do not initialize tracefs if tracing is disabled at boot If tracing fails to allocate or some other error is detected, tracing_disabled is set. Do not initialize tracefs in this case as it may expect data to be initialized but is not. - Free eventfs inode after an RCU grace period Currently eventfs_inodes are freed after a SRCU grace period as the iterations in the code use SRCU. There are locations that the inode may still be accessed from the VFS that uses RCU which does not have the same synchronization as SRCU. Add an RCU wait before free eventfs inodes. - Do not fail persistent and remote buffers under memory pressure As persistent and remote buffers have their own pre-allocated memory, there's no reason to check how much memory is available before created them. By checking the memory pressure, these buffers may fail to be created even though their memory is already present. - Account for subbuffer size when checking how much memory is available Before allocating a ring buffer, the size is checked against the current memory pressure of the system. But it assumes every sub-buffer is of page size. This is no longer the case. Use the actual sub-buffer size when calculating how much memory will be used. - Reject non-stack fields for synthetic stacktrace fields Stack traces are special fields and the checks currently do not do enough to make sure that the fields being processed as stack traces are indeed stack traces. Update the logic to properly detect what is or is not a stack trace. - Fix a crash in print_graph_function_event() When a tracer does not define static or default flags the tr->current_trace_flags is set to NULL. If the ring buffer is not cleared when switching tracers, the previous tracers events could be read. The function_graph entries will dereference the tr->current_trace_flags and cause a crash. Set the tr->current_trace_flags to a empty set of flags to prevent it from being NULL. - Separate tracing filter predicate count from allocation The amount allocated for the predicate program is the number of predicates defined plus two for adding "true" and "false" at the end. The nr_preds is incremented by two to accommodate the booleans but is then used as the limit check for number of predicates. This is incorrect as it is now two higher than what is expected. Use a separate variable for the size of the predicate array. - Fix the filter operator stack check The operator stack increments the pointer and then writes the content onto the stack. The check for overflow compared the current pointer to see if it was greater than the stack size before doing so. This is an off by 2 error as the write will be at the size - 1 and the compare is done before the increment. Adjust the check accordingly. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iIoEABYKADIWIQRRSw7ePDh/lE+zeZMp5XQQmuv6qgUCatItoRQccm9zdGVkdEBn b29kbWlzLm9yZwAKCRAp5XQQmuv6qmfsAP9XviDyrl49/PBpuanB2qQzlMGqYQlb CwISmzgWoO1jKQEArNiSpKsIdPLfSJSLfIHAGxAZfmT42SugA4M5jqhW3Qc= =7KiP -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'trace-v7.3-rc7' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/trace/linux-trace Pull tracing fixes from Steven Rostedt: - Fix NULL dereference when copying histogram field variable If event_hist_trigger_parse() creates an action that uses one of pseudo fields for its keys, the hist_data field element will have a NULL for its field member. printk: Postpone kthread startup
There have been various bug reports related to SMP systems hanging
on boot. The reports vary but seem to have some overlap with regard
to missed IPI's during SMP setup. The reports also show that
reverting NBCON console usage allows the bugs to disappear.
The NBCON kthreads for console printing are started very early
during boot using early_initcall(). Since these kthreads are
asynchronously enabling/disabling interrupts during early boot, they
may be interfering with early SMP setup on some hardware platforms.
Starting the console printing kthreads later has shown to avoid the
hanging on systems that could previously reproduce the issue.
Postpone kthread starting until after all arch initcalls have
completed.

Merge tag 'vfs-7.3-rc8.fixes' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull vfs fixes from Christian Brauner:
- Fix a range of use-after-frees during rcu pathwalk caused by non-rcu
frees.
Whatever ->permission(), ->d_revalidate(), ->get_link(), ->d_hash()
and ->d_compare() read in rcu mode has to be freed after a grace
period. umount(2) hides most of it because namespace_unlock() waits
for one, but a chdir() out of a lazily unmounted directory or the
close() of the last file on it drops the last reference without.
* ext4_get_link() reads the sbi and the extent status counters for a
symlink stored in a data block. Both are freed after a grace
period now.
* The unicode map of casefolded ext4, f2fs and tmpfs was freed under
generic_ci_d_hash() and generic_ci_d_compare().
* ntfs3 with nocase freed its sbi and mount options under its dentry
hash and compare. A remount freed the old options right away too.
* eventfs freed an eventfs_inode after an SRCU grace period only
while tracefs_d_revalidate() reads it under rcu_read_lock().
* afs and 9p are only saved by the grace period their private bdi
gets in bdi_unregister(). They stop depending on it.
* create_ipc_ns() leaked the mqueue mount and its superblock on a
late failure. A long-term mount needs kern_unmount().
- Don't let idle threads pin the initramfs.
The idle threads of the secondary cpus are forked from PID 1 with a
private copy of its fs_struct, aren't on the task list so
pivot_root() never moves them and never exit. So the initramfs stayed
pinned forever on every machine with more than one cpu, 70 to 150 MB
in the reports. They share init_fs now like init_task does.
- A mount that copy_tree() leaves out can't take over a lock.
copy_tree() drops mounts of mount namespace files from the copies it
makes for unshare(CLONE_NEWNS) and propagation without looking at
MNT_LOCKED. So root in a user namespace could bind a child's
/proc/<pid>/ns/mnt beneath a locked cover, let it take the lock over,
unshare(CLONE_NEWNS) and read the file. copy_tree() refuses with
EPERM now and the move beneath a locked mount is refused up front.
- Revert "namei: don't reveal overmounted entries in refwalk" from the
rc7 fixes. The bug class is bigger than that patch.
- namei: lookup_fast_for_open() checked ->d_inode while
traverse_mounts() checks the type in d_flags, which is set second, so
a refwalk racing the instantiation could fail an O_CREAT open with
ENOENT. Use d_is_negative() in both places.
- Drop the smp_mb()s in mntput_no_expire_slowpath() and do_umount()
that mnt_get_count()'s own barrier made redundant.
- fsnotify: a mark added while fsnotify_destroy_marks() walks the
connector could be missed and the connector detached, so an fdinfo
read called igrab(NULL). New marks are refused during teardown.
- pipe: a failed second fasync enable on an O_RDWR FIFO removed the
existing reader entry and cleared FASYNC while the writer entry
stayed, a use-after-free in send_sigio() later.
- watch_queue: post_one_notification() could see nr_notes before the
note pool behind it and dereference a NULL array. An unprivileged
user can trigger that with a key watch. Publish nr_notes last.
- pid_namespace: zap_pid_ns_processes() waits without bound for a
tracer outside the namespace to reap its zombies and neither wait was
freezable, so every suspend attempt failed.
- exit: is_child_subreaper and has_child_subreaper shared a word with
other bitfields written without a common lock, so racing prctl()s
lost a bit. They are separate bools now.
- autofs: a notification write that failed on a pipe the daemon had
already replaced put the superblock into catatonic mode again and
closed the replacement. Only do that for the current pipe.
- ovl: reject a lowerdir ending with an unescaped backslash with EINVAL
instead of a confusing ENOENT later.
- ocfs2/dlm: take dlm_reco_state_lock when the debugfs state file walks
the recovery participant list.
- samples/pidfd: fix the userprogs typo that kept pidfd-metadata from
being built.

perf: Update cgroup time when rotating multiplexed events
Since commit |

perf: Fix perf_pmu_migrate_context() leaving events behind
__perf_pmu_remove() walks the group leaders of a CPU and PMU with
perf_event_groups_for_cpu_pmu(), removing each one as it goes.
perf_remove_from_context() takes the leader out of the groups rbtree,
after which rb_next() on that node returns NULL, prematurely ending the
walk. Other groups stay behind in the source context.
On CPU hotplug, they are then torn down with the dying CPU. They keep
running until teardown, while the PMU's interrupt and migrated events
are on a new CPU, which drivers rely on never happening.
Walk ctx->event_list instead and pick out the PMU's events by their
pmu_ctx.

tracing: Check operator stack capacity before pushing
predicate_parse() uses the first operator stack entry before processing
any opening parentheses. A push then increments top before writing.
The existing check still permits that write when top already points to
the last allocated entry, which can access beyond the operator stack.
Reject the push when top reaches the last allocated entry.

tracing: Keep the predicate limit separate from program capacity
predicate_parse() adds two to nr_preds to reserve the terminal TRUE
and FALSE entries. It also uses that increased value as the limit for
parsed predicates. If the initial count is smaller than the number
actually parsed, the program can fill the allocation and subsequent
accesses can go past its end.
Keep nr_preds as the predicate limit and use a separate value for the
allocation size. This leaves space for both terminal entries and a
zeroed entry when parsing stops at the limit.

tracing: Fix crash in print_graph_function_event()
tracing_set_tracer() assigns the flags of the newly selected tracer
with:
tr->current_trace_flags = t->flags ? : t->tracer->flags;
If the new tracer defines neither static flags nor default flags, like
hwlat, irqsoff or wakeup, add_tracer() has no per instance flags copy
for it, and both operands are NULL, so tr->current_trace_flags ends up
being NULL as well.
The ring buffer is not cleared when switching tracers: it is reset
inside tracer_init(), after current_trace_flags was already assigned.
If the buffer still holds function_graph entries of the previous
tracer, printing one of them dereferences the NULL pointer. This was
hit by cat trace during an ftrace stress test:
BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000
#PF: supervisor read access in kernel mode

ksys_read+0x6d/0xe0
do_syscall_64+0xbc/0x450
The snapshot buffer is not reset at all, so this can be reproduced
without a race:
echo function_graph > /sys/kernel/tracing/current_tracer
echo 1 > /sys/kernel/tracing/snapshot
echo hwlat > /sys/kernel/tracing/current_tracer
cat /sys/kernel/tracing/snapshot
Rather than teaching every user of tr->current_trace_flags about this
corner case, make sure it is never NULL: when the newly selected
tracer has no flags at all, tracing_set_tracer() falls back to a
static empty no_tracer_flags. run_tracer_selftest() can hit the same
case, so the same fallback is added there too. The existing users
already handle opts == NULL, so these tracers keep behaving as before.

tracing/histograms: Reject non-stacktrace fields for synthetic stacktrace fields
In check_synth_field(), when a synthetic event field is a stacktrace
(field->is_stack) and the histogram field is not a "long[" stacktrace
array, validation falls through to the generic size and signedness
comparison.
Because parse_synth_field() sets a stacktrace field's type to
"__data_loc unsigned long[]", its size is sizeof(u64) and
synth_field_signed() marks it as signed. Consequently, any 8-byte
signed scalar histogram field passes the fallback check, and its scalar
value is subsequently dereferenced as a kernel stacktrace pointer in
get_field_size() and trace_stack().
Furthermore, checking strstr(hist_field->type, "long[") is insufficient
because tracepoint fields defined with __bitmask() or __rel_bitmask()
also have type "__data_loc unsigned long[]" or "__rel_loc unsigned
long[]", whilst create_hist_field() treats them as 4-byte scalar values
without HIST_FIELD_FL_STACKTRACE.
Propagate HIST_FIELD_FL_STACKTRACE to variable references and field
variables (whilst excluding variable aliases from per-element
stacktrace capture), and reject any mismatch between
HIST_FIELD_FL_STACKTRACE and field->is_stack in check_synth_field().

tracing: Do not initialize tracefs work if tracing is disabled
If trace buffer allocation fails during early boot (e.g. in
early_trace_init() -> allocate_trace_buffers()), tracing_disabled is
left set to 1 and the global trace array events list remains

Later during boot, tracer_init_tracefs() (invoked via fs_initcall)
queues tracerfs_init_work asynchronously without checking if tracing was
disabled. When tracer_init_tracefs_work_func() runs, it calls

The root cause is that when an event file has a filter attached and the
hist trigger has not yet been attached, trace_event_buffer_lock_reserve()
writes the event into the per-CPU trace_buffered_event temp buffer instead
of reserving it in the ring buffer, so cpu_buffer->committing is not
incremented. When the event is later processed at commit time by a hist
trigger, hist_field_timestamp() -> ring_buffer_event_time_stamp() sees a
zero committing count, triggering WARN_ON_ONCE(!nest).

ring-buffer: Fix false warning in ring_buffer_map_get_reader()
The mmap reader can warn when it catches up with a writer that is still
committing events. rb_get_reader_page() returns NULL in this case, but
ring_buffer_map_get_reader() treats that result as an error.
The initial rb_per_cpu_empty() check filters out an empty buffer, but it
does not guarantee that the next reader page has committed data. Writers
do not take reader_lock and can advance commit_page before publishing the
committed length on the new page. rb_get_reader_page() can swap to that
page, catch up with the writer and return NULL.
Handle NULL through the existing no-data exit without warning. Remove the
caller's reader_page == commit_page check as well, since the reader-page
helper already handles that case. The existing metadata update and return
path remain in place.

ring-buffer: Fix the sub-buffer array base in rb_meta_subbuf_idx()
On a persistent ring buffer, rb_meta_subbuf_idx() can return an index one
sub-buffer too high. rb_setup_ids_meta_page() then fills subbuf_ids[]
shifted by one and leaves subbuf_ids[0] NULL, which __rb_map_vma()
dereferences when userspace maps trace_pipe_raw. rb_update_meta_reader()
writes two such indices into meta->buffers[], which rb_cpu_meta_valid()
would reject on the next boot, discarding the previous boot's trace.
A CPU's sub-buffer array starts after its meta header and the nr_subbufs
integers that follow, aligned up to a sub-buffer. rb_meta_subbuf_idx()
inverts that calculation but skips only the integers, not the header, so
its base is one sub-buffer low whenever the omitted header size crosses
the alignment boundary.
Invert the calculation with rb_subbufs_from_meta() rather than repeating
it. rb_range_buffer() maps an index back to an address through the same
helper, so the two directions can no longer disagree.

tracing: Fix the shift out of bounds in the log2 histogram modifier
The .log2 key modifier files a value under its base-2 order:
# echo 'hist:keys=bytes_req.log2' > events/kmem/kmalloc/trigger
hist_field_log2() computes that as ilog2(roundup_pow_of_two(val)). The
out-of-line form of roundup_pow_of_two() is
return 1UL << fls_long(n - 1);
which shifts by 64 on a 64-bit kernel both when n is 0, where n - 1
wraps to ULONG_MAX, and when n is above 2^63. Both are ordinary keys,
because the field fetch hands every value over as a u64: a syscall
argument of 0 reaches the first, and one above 2^63 reaches the second.
Keying sys_enter_lseek on offset.log2 and passing 0, 1, 2, 3, 1000,
2^63+1 and U64_MAX gives
{ offset: ~ 2^1 } hitcount: 1
{ offset: ~ 2^10 } hitcount: 1
{ offset: ~ 2^2 } hitcount: 1
{ offset: ~ 2^0 } hitcount: 4
Keys above 2^63 land in the lowest bucket. With CONFIG_UBSAN_SHIFT=y
the shift is also reported:
UBSAN: shift-out-of-bounds in include/linux/log2.h:57:13
shift exponent 64 is too large for 64-bit type 'long unsigned int'

do_syscall_64+0x402/0x4b0
Use order_base_2(), which is ilog2(n - 1) + 1 for n > 1 and 0 below
that. It returns what the old expression returned on every input the
old one was defined for. Where it was not, 0 stays in bucket 0, which
is where x86_64 had been putting it, and the keys above 2^63 move into
bucket 64.

tracing: Fix NULL dereference when copying keys for a field variable
In event_hist_trigger_parse() where it needs to create actions like

event_hist_trigger_parse() {

trace_action_create() {

create_field_var_hist()
Where create_field_var_hist() does a loop on the hist_data
representing the keys. The issue is, if the keys uses one of the
pseudo field types (like common_cpu), the hist_data field element
will have NULL for its field member causing a NULL pointer
dereference when accessing the key_field->field->name.

fs: let idle threads share init_fs
With nullfs as the real rootfs userspace can pivot_root() away from the
initramfs and unmount it:
chdir(rootfs);
pivot_root(".", ".");
umount2(".", MNT_DETACH);
That's what systemd does and the initramfs is supposed to go away at
that point together with all the memory it uses. But on every machine
with more than one possible cpu the initramfs superblock stays around
forever (cf. [1]). With ramfs as rootfs the unpacked initramfs shows up
as Unevictable in /proc/meminfo, with tmpfs as Shmem, and it is never
freed. In the reports that's between 70MB and 150MB.
The idle threads of the secondary cpus are created by fork_idle() from
smp_init(). That runs in kernel_init(), i.e., in PID 1, after
init_userspace_fs() moved PID 1 from nullfs into the initramfs.
fork_idle() doesn't pass CLONE_FS so each idle thread gets a private
copy of PID 1's fs_struct and with it a reference to the initramfs as
root and as pwd.
pivot_root() relies on chroot_fs_refs() to move everyone whose root or
pwd is the old root over to the new root. Idle threads aren't on the
task list though so chroot_fs_refs() never finds them. They never exit
either. So they keep the initramfs mount and with it the superblock
alive for good. I overlooked this when I added nullfs. Before that the
rootfs could never be unmounted anyway so it didn't matter what pinned
it.
Idle threads are kernel threads and init_task, the idle thread of the
boot cpu, already uses init_fs. So let the idle threads of the other
cpus share init_fs as well instead of copying PID 1's filesystem state.
Note that kernels before 7.3 need a different backport. There PID 1
still shares init_fs with all kthreads so passing CLONE_FS in
fork_idle() is enough. They also have a second pin: devtmpfsd unshares
a copy of the initial mount namespace, initramfs mount included. That
was fixed in commit

pid_namespace: make zap_pid_ns_processes() freezable
When the init of a pid namespace exits, zap_pid_ns_processes() waits until all other pids in the namespace are freed. A tracer outside the namespace that does not reap its traced zombies keeps those pids allocated, so this wait has no upper bound, and while it lasts every suspend attempt fails: Freezing user space processes failed after 20.006 seconds (2 tasks refusing to freeze, wq_busy=0): Neither wait is freezable. The first loop sleeps in do_wait(), which returns -ERESTARTSYS on the freezer's fake signal; the loop then clears TIF_SIGPENDING and waits again without ever freezing. The final loop sleeps in TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE, and since nothing clears TIF_SIGPENDING there, schedule() returns immediately after the first freeze attempt and the task spins until the wait ends. Sleep in TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE | TASK_FREEZABLE in do_wait(), so that the freezer can freeze tasks waiting there directly, and in TASK_IDLE | TASK_FREEZABLE in the final loop, like coredump_task_exit() does. This was hit with Chromium-based browsers: crashpad ptrace-attaches the threads of a crashed renderer, which is a pid namespace init, and does not reap those killed during the dump. Fixes: |

watch_queue: Fix note pool publication race in watch_queue_set_size()
There is a race between watch_queue_set_size() and post_one_notification().
watch_queue_set_size() publishes wqueue->notes, notes_bitmap, nr_pages and
nr_notes with plain stores, and post_one_notification() reads them with
plain loads under a different lock, so nothing orders the four stores
against the poster's loads: depending on the build, notes can be stored
last (gcc 14 on x86-64 does this). Since keyctl_watch_key() lets a watch
attach to a queue before it is sized, post_one_notification() can already
be running on another CPU at that moment: it reads nr_notes > 0, passes
its bounds check, and then reads notes while it is still NULL,
dereferencing notes[0].
An unprivileged user triggers this reliably by watching one of its own
keys through a notification pipe and racing ioctl(IOC_WATCH_QUEUE_SET_SIZE)
on that pipe against keyctl(KEYCTL_SETPERM) on the key from another CPU,
triggering:
BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000
RIP: 0010:post_one_notification.isra.0+0xa2/0x1e0

Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt
Fix this by publishing nr_notes last with smp_store_release(), and by
reading it once with smp_load_acquire() in post_one_notification() before
the bitmap and the page array are touched. A poster that observes a
non-zero nr_notes then also observes the pool behind it; one that observes
zero drops the notification as before.

futex: Fix mm reuse handling for FUT_OFF_MMSHARED
A FUT_OFF_MMSHARED futex is a shared futex that refers to an MM.
It is possible for a process to wait on a shared futex with a different MM
because a FUT_OFF_INODE waiter can be requeued onto a FUT_OFF_MMSHARED
futex by another process.
This can cause FUT_OFF_MMSHARED waiters on a freed MM to consume
wakeups intended for a newly allocated MM at the same address.
Fix it by keying FUT_OFF_MMSHARED using a unique 64-bit per-MM ID.
Leave private futexes as before to avoid influencing the performance of the
hotpath.
(Multi-threaded processes typically implicitly use FUT_OFF_MMSHARED by
setting clear_child_tid such that it points into anonymous memory, which
causes mm_release() in a multi-threaded mm to perform FUTEX_WAKE.)

sched/core: Call wakeup_preempt() for queued tasks during class change
Paul reported recent RCU changes exposed a lost resched where CPU idles
with a rcutorture thread waiting while being completely runnable.
Dumping the rq state at the time of idling with runnable tasks showed
the following:
rq->next_class = &fair_sched_class
rq->nr_running = 1
rq->cfs.h_nr_queued = 0
rq->rt.rt_nr_running = 1
Although the waiting task was an RT task, "rq->next_class" did not point
to rt_sched_class and was stuck at the lower priority fair_sched_class.
Inspecting sched_change_end() revealed the following race with
__sched_setscheduler() for queued, but non-running tasks:
CPU0 CPU1
==== ====
__schedule()
/*
* rq->donor is a fair task that blocks.
* rq->next_class = &fair_sched_class
*/

sched_change_end()
/*

* (!ctx->running) hence
* resched_curr() is and
* rq->next_class upgrade is
* skipped.
*/
task_rq_unlock()
raw_spin_rq_lock(rq0)
/*
* rq->nr_running = 1
* rq->cfs.h_nr_queued = 0
* rq->rt.rt_nr_running = 1
* rq->next_class = &fair_sched_class
*/
if (rq->cfs.h_nr_queued && ...)
/* Above is false */
if (rq_modified_above(this_rq, &fair_sched_class))
/* Also false since rq->next_class is still fair */
/*
* sched_balance_newidle() is considered to
* have failed to pull any fair tasks and no
* other wakeups were detected.
*/
return NULL; /* pick_task_fair() */
pick_task_idle()
return rq->idle;
next = rq->idle;
/* Preemption indicators are lost */
clear_tsk_need_resched(prev);
clear_preempt_need_resched();
rq->curr = rq->idle;
!!! rq->idle switches in with rq->running == 1 but !need_resched() !!!
In simple words, enqueue, followed by a class change of the newly queued
task goes unnoticed in rq->next_class indicator and
sched_balance_newidle() sees no fair task, nor any higher priority task
enqueued.
The above sequence will lead to CPU idling with a runnable task on the
CPU.
Call wakeup_preempt() for ctx->queued cases in sched_change_end() to
re-evaluate rq->next_class after class change (ENQUEUE_CLASS) and set
the NEED_RESCHED indicator accordingly.
Newidle balance will correctly see an enqueue of a higher priority
task if a queued task was upgraded when the rq_lock() was dropped and
will retry the pick.

nbcon/reboot: Switch NBCON consoles into the emergency mode in emergency_restart()
When the system is going down a normal way, the NBCON kthreads are flushed and stopped properly via a syscore shutdown callback, see printk_kthreads_shutdown(). One missing piece is emergency_restart() where the kthreads are not stopped. It might be called from several non-panic code paths, e.g. sysrq-o, kdb_reboot(), or some watchdogs. Fix it by explicitly entering the emergency (atomic) mode and trying to flush the consoles there. Note that printk_trigger_flush() must be used instead of pr_flush() because the later is not safe in an atomic context. sched_ext: Wait for SCX_OPSS_DISPATCHING before moving tasks off DSQs
A task can be found on a non-local DSQ while the CPU which dispatched it is still running ops.dequeue() and hasn't cleared SCX_OPSS_DISPATCHING. sched_ext: idle: Respect task affinity in restricted CPU selection
The restricted select_cpu kfunc path handles single-CPU and
migration-disabled tasks without going through scx_select_cpu_dfl().
It currently uses prev_cpu as the candidate, even though prev_cpu is only a
hint and may no longer be usable after an affinity change. With a
caller-provided @allowed mask, this can also return an idle CPU outside
p->cpus_ptr.
Derive the candidate from task state instead: use the sole CPU in
p->cpus_ptr for single-CPU tasks and task_cpu(p) for migration-disabled
tasks. Validate it against p->cpus_ptr and @allowed before claiming its
idle state.
Since the derived candidate may be on a different NUMA node from
prev_cpu, also preserve SCX_PICK_IDLE_IN_NODE by rejecting cross-node
candidates.
Perform all checks before scx_idle_test_and_clear_cpu(), as a successful
call consumes the CPU's idle bit.

sched_ext: Fix the bypass dispatch claim for schedulers bypassed by an ancestor
scx_bypass() claims bypass dispatch when the scheduler's depth goes from
zero to one and releases it when the depth returns to zero, but propagates
only the depth to the descendants, not the claim. A descendant that starts
bypassing with its ancestor never claims, and one whose own bypass ends
under the ancestor's keeps its claim, as its depth does not return to zero.
A sub-scheduler enable whose bypass ends under a PM suspend thus leaks its
claim: the parent keeps hosting bypass dispatch and the sub-scheduler's next
bypass trips the WARN_ON_ONCE() on the claim. A sub-scheduler disable that
starts under a PM suspend has no claim, so once the resume lifts the root's
bypass its tasks sit on the parent's bypass DSQs with nobody consuming them.
Claim for every descendant whose depth goes from zero to one in the
propagation and release every scheduler in the subtree whose depth returned
to zero once the tasks have moved out of the bypass DSQs. A parent that is
bypassing itself when a descendant claims consumes only its own bypass DSQs,
empty until it leaves bypass and becomes the host.

sched_ext: Propagate every bypass depth change to the descendants
scx_bypass() propagates a depth change to the descendants only when the
scheduler's own depth crosses zero, so an own bypass that starts under an
ancestor's never reaches them. When the ancestor's bypass ends first, the
descendants leave bypass while the scheduler is still bypassing: a
sub-scheduler disabled under a PM suspend has its children re-queue their
tasks through their own BPF schedulers at resume, mid-teardown. If the own
bypass then ends, every descendant is decremented once more than incremented
and dec_bypass_depth() warns, though no current caller gets there.
Propagate on every call so that a descendant's depth is the sum of its own
bypasses and its ancestors'. The early return follows the walk, as a
descendant's depth is at least the scheduler's and nothing changes bypass
state unless the scheduler's own does.

sched_ext: Fix use-after-free of a destroyed user DSQ by a deferred reenqueue
A deferred reenqueue can read a freed user DSQ. The request stays on its
CPU's deferred list until run_deferred() takes it, and the RCU callback that
frees the DSQ assumes that the grace period has flushed it, so exit_dsq()
checks the per-CPU node without the deferred list lock. A grace period waits
for readers in flight, not for a pending run_deferred(). A run_deferred()
which starts after the grace period began can detach the request right
before the callback looks and then read the freed DSQ's id.
Cancel the pending requests before the grace period instead. The irq work
that frees the DSQ unlinks every CPU's request under the per-CPU deferred
list lock, and schedule_dsq_reenq() ignores a new request under the same
lock once the id is invalid. Only a run_deferred() that started before the
grace period can hold a request, and it runs with IRQs disabled, so the
grace period waits for it and nothing touches the DSQ after the callback.
