Driver core changes for 7.3-rc1
- container_of:
- Apply typeof_member(), remove the local __mptr variable to eliminate
variable shadowing warnings on nested container_of() calls, and remove
unnecessary parentheses.
- core:
- Add driver name to probe debug print for initcall_debug.
- Avoid repeatedly printing the same 'Fixed dependency cycle' log.
- Unwind device_add() on attribute creation failure in
attribute_container_add_class_device().
- Remove statistics group if encryption group creation fails in
transport_add_class_device().
- debugfs:
- Fix lockdown check for mmap_prepare().
- Warn if file creation failed due to uninitialized debugfs.
- device property:
- Implement fw_devlink support for software nodes by adding
software_node_add_links(), which creates fwnode links from DEV_PROP_REF
properties to enable automatic probe ordering. Add kunit-managed fwnode
helpers and test coverage.
- Fix infinite loop in fwnode_for_each_child_node() when the secondary fwnode
has more than one child. Add test cases.
- Fix out-of-bounds access in software_node_get_reference_args() when called
with index -1 (UINT_MAX).
- Refactor to use RAII approach with __free().
- Add Bartosz Golaszewski as software node reviewer.
- firmware loader:
- Fix race where a sysfs fallback request can complete before being queued as
pending, leading to a use-after-free on the next fallback request.
- Reject 0-size built-in firmware and fail the build on empty firmware files
in CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE.
- kobject:
- Provide __KOBJ_ATTR() and __KOBJ_ATTR_RO/WO() initialization macros and
allow the constification of kobject attributes, enabling them to reside in
read-only memory.
- platform:
- Provide platform_device_set_of_node(), platform_device_set_fwnode(), and
platform_device_set_of_node_from_dev() helpers that encapsulate firmware
node reference counting for dynamically allocated platform devices. Convert
all in-tree users that manually assigned dev.of_node or dev.fwnode, fixing a
pre-existing refcount bug in powermac. Switch to counting references of all
firmware node types, not only OF nodes.
- Unify the release path for dynamically allocated platform devices by
removing platform_device_release_full(). Amend the fwnode setter API
contract to warn if a primary software node is overwritten. Add KUnit tests
for correct software node removal on device unregistration.
- Rust:
- Auxiliary:
- Add registration_data_with() closure-based API for invariant ForLt types.
- Debugfs:
- Migrate BinaryWriter and BinaryReaderMut trait requirements from
kernel::transmute traits to zerocopy traits.
- Device:
- Add BoundInternal device context and InternalBoundContext trait for bus
abstractions that need internal access to a bound device.
- Make the lifetime on Core and CoreInternal invariant to prevent coercion
to shorter lifetimes.
- Devres:
- Fix race between concurrent revokers where the losing revoker could return
before the winning revoker finished dropping the inner data, causing
use-after-free.
- Ensure revocation is complete before the device finishes unbinding by
making the synchronization bidirectional.
- Add DevresLt<F: ForLt>, a wrapper around Devres that shortens 'static back
to the caller's borrow scope. Implement ForLt and CovariantForLt for Bar,
IoMem, and ExclusiveIoMem.
- Driver:
- Switch from index-based to pointer-based device ID info lookup, storing
static references in driver_data. Centralize device ID handling in
device_id.rs, removing the open-coded ACPI/OF matching logic and duplicate
ID table from driver.rs.
- I/O:
- Make I/O regions typed (with a dynamically-sized Region type for the
existing untyped case), create view types representing subregions of a
mapped I/O region, and add io_project!() for safely creating subviews.
- Split Io into a base trait (IoBase) and an extension trait (Io) with a
blanket implementation, preventing implementers from overriding provided
methods that unsafe code relies on.
- Add a SysMem backend for shared system memory with volatile access, and
make Coherent implement Io via an I/O view type. Add IoSysMap as sum type
of Mmio and SysMem. Add copying methods (memcpy_{from,to}io()) and
read_val()/write_val() for typed access.
- Replace dma_read!()/dma_write!() with io_read!()/io_write!() for
primitives and copying methods for aggregates; drop the old macros.
Convert nova-core to use I/O projection.
- Fix internal shortcut rule dispatch in the register!() macro, remove
unused rule arguments, and use path fragments for alias destinations.
- IRQ:
- Make irq::Registration compatible with lifetime-bound drivers by
removing the 'static bound on Handler/ThreadedHandler and
replacing Devres<RegistrationInner> with direct
request_irq()/free_irq() calls. Handlers can now directly own
lifetime-bound device resources.
- PCI:
- Convert IrqVectorRegistration to a lifetime-annotated owning type,
giving drivers explicit control over the allocation lifetime.
IrqVector embeds a resolved IrqRequest, making the conversion
infallible. Remove the redundant
request_irq()/request_threaded_irq() wrappers from pci::Device.
- Add pci_irq_type() C helper and expose it via irq_type() on
IrqVectorRegistration and IrqVector, returning PCI_IRQ_MSIX, PCI_IRQ_MSI,
or PCI_IRQ_INTX.
- Mark pci::Device refcount methods inline.
- Serdev:
- Add Rust abstractions for the serial device bus, including serdev::Driver
trait, serdev::Device wrapping struct serdev_device, and serdev::Adapter
implementing RegistrationOps. Includes a sample driver. Markus Probst
takes over as serdev maintainer for both C and Rust code.
- Misc:
- Split ForLt into a base trait (providing the Of<'a> GAT) and an unsafe
CovariantForLt subtrait guaranteeing covariance, enabling invariant types
(e.g. those containing Mutex<&'bound T>) to participate in the ForLt
abstraction.
- Fix Coherent read past EOF returning -ERANGE instead of zero.
- Fix firmware example UB by avoiding null-pointer ARef.
- misc:
- Avoid iattr allocation in kernfs listxattr by using kernfs_iattrs_noalloc().
- Unregister SoC bus on early device registration failure.
- Remove unused DMA_FENCE_TRACE Kconfig symbol.
- Fix /sys/module path in comment.
- Refactor ISA bus init to remove nested blocks.
- Remove redundant nodemask clears in numa_init().
- Add kernel-doc for fwnode_operations and sys_soc.h, mark internal property
data as private for kernel-doc, and add property.h/fwnode.h to driver-api
infrastructure docs.
- Add MAINTAINERS entry for sys_soc.h.

platform/chrome: of_hw_prober: Add delay for hana trackpads
Up until now, the MT8173 elm/hana device tree has set the dedicated regulator supplying the trackpad as always-on, simply because the Elan driver was missing proper delays. As a result the delay for the Synaptics trackpad was also omitted, as it was not strictly required under such a model and delayed the availability of the trackpad to the user. The Elan driver recently gained proper delays after power-up, with adaptive skipping of the delay if the regulator was originally on. The I2C HID driver and I2C OF component prober library gained similar adaptive delay skipping. The device tree will be fixed to have the regulator not be always on, and proper post-power-on delay time added to the I2C HID device. Also add the post-power-on delay to the ChromeOS OF component prober, so that if the regulator is off at the time of probing, the prober knows to wait for the hardware to initialize. platform/chrome: lightbar: Limit payload to max packet size
The LIGHTBAR_CMD_SET_PROGRAM command uses an 8-bit size field for its
payload length, but the protocol-negotiated `max_request` may exceed
the maximum value an 8-bit integer can represent.
When this occurs, large payloads (e.g., >255 bytes) integer wrap the
8-bit size variable when assigning `param->set_program_ex.size`, causing
truncation and parse failures downstream in the EC firmware stack.
Clamp `max_size` to the maximum value the structural size field can
support.

platform: int3472: discrete: Support multiple HIDs per GPIO map entry
Each int3472_gpio_map entry currently maps exactly one ACPI HID to a GPIO quirk. As more sensors needing the same quirk are identified, this means adding a full duplicate table entry per HID, differing only in the HID string, which does not scale. Change int3472_gpio_map::hid to a NULL-terminated hids array so a single entry can match any number of ACPI HIDs, letting new HIDs be added to the relevant array instead of duplicating quirk entries. platform/x86: dell-dw5826e: fix ACPI _DSM function index and bitmask usage
PALC_DSM_FN_TRIGGER_PLDR was defined as BIT(1) (value 2).
acpi_evaluate_dsm() expects a 0-based function index integer (0, 1,
2, ...), whereas acpi_check_dsm() expects a bitmask of supported
function indices (BIT(1), BIT(2), ...).
Because PALC_DSM_FN_TRIGGER_PLDR was defined as BIT(1),
acpi_evaluate_dsm() was evaluating Function Index 2 instead of Function
Index 1, while acpi_check_dsm() was checking for Function Index 1
support.
Fix this by setting PALC_DSM_FN_TRIGGER_PLDR to 1 (the function index)
and passing BIT(PALC_DSM_FN_TRIGGER_PLDR) to acpi_check_dsm().

platform/loongarch: laptop: Explicitly reset bl_powered state when suspend
On EAECIS NL60R with EC firmware version 1.11, resuming from S3 has a
very high chance (>90%) of causing the EC to lose the previous backlight
power state. When this happens, the laptop resumes normally from S3, but
the backlight remains off (when shining on the screen with a flash light,
we can see the screen contents are updating normally).
Since there is no generic way to query the EC's backlight state on
Loongson laptop platforms, assume the worst-case scenario and restart
the backlight power inside the kernel each time the system resumes.

platform/x86/intel/vsec: free ACPI discovery data on early errors
intel_vsec_add_dev() may attach an ACPI discovery table copy to the
intel_vsec_device before passing ownership to intel_vsec_add_aux(). The
normal auxiliary-device release path frees that copy, but the earliest
intel_vsec_add_aux() failures free only the outer structure directly.
Route those direct frees through a common helper so acpi_disc is
released consistently on the parent, xarray, and ID allocation failure
paths.

The previously integrated power limits for the ASUS ROG Strix G16 G614PR
laptop model were incorrect and too low compared to the windows counterparts.
Update the power limits to the correct specifications based on the
platform's hardware capabilities:
- Increase AC PL1/SPL max limit from 90W to 120W.
- Increase AC PL2/SPPT default/max from 110W/125W to 140W/145W.
- Increase AC PL3/FPPT default/max from 110W/125W to 140W/145W.

x86/cpu: Hide and rename static_cpu_has()
cpu_feature_enabled() is the one to use to test feature flags so hide the static thing which doesn't pay attention to disabled mask bits anyway. Use the following command to do the replacement: $ git grep --files-with-matches -w static_cpu_has -- ':(exclude)*cpufeature.h' \ | xargs sed -i 's/static_cpu_has(/cpu_feature_enabled\(/g' There should be no functional changes resulting from this. platform/x86: bitland-mifs-wmi: Fix NULL pointer dereference during suspend/resume
The driver registers two distinct WMI devices: a control device
(BITLAND_WMI_CONTROL) and an event device (BITLAND_WMI_EVENT). During
the probe phase, the event device handling path returns early before
initializing the platform profile device (data->pp_dev), leaving it
NULL.
However, the PM sleep operations are registered globally for the WMI
driver and are triggered for both devices. When entering suspend, the
event device invokes bitland_mifs_wmi_suspend(), which passes the
uninitialized data->pp_dev (NULL) into laptop_profile_get(). This leads
to a NULL pointer dereference inside dev_get_drvdata(), causing a
kernel Oops and halting the suspend sequence.
Fix this by adding a validity check for data->pp_dev in both the suspend
and resume callbacks, safely skipping profile operations for the event
device.

platform/x86/amd/pmc: Avoid logging "(null)" for DMI values
dmi_get_system_info(...) can return NULL. Using that as %s arguments
of dev_info() would log "(null)" (as part of a message like
'... System Vendor: "(null)", Product Name: "(null)" ...'), which may
be confusing for users.
Use Elvis operator to print "(Unknown)" instead.

platform/chrome: sensorhub: Fix memory overread in ring handler
`max_response` and `sensor_num` are read from different EC commands:
- `max_response` is from cros_ec_get_proto_info().
ec_dev->max_response = info->max_response_packet_size -
sizeof(struct ec_host_response);
- `sensor_num` is from cros_ec_get_sensor_count().
sensor_num = cros_ec_get_sensor_count(ec);
With a malfunctioning EC firmware, it is possible that the `msg->insize`
(i.e., `fifo_info_length` in the context) could be clamped in
cros_ec_cmd_xfer() because `msg->insize` is greater than `max_response`.
int fifo_info_length =
sizeof(struct ec_response_motion_sense_fifo_info) +
sizeof(u16) * sensorhub->sensor_num;
This means the number of read bytes could be less than expected. As a
result, the subsequent memcpy() in cros_ec_sensorhub_ring_handler()
overreads the `resp->fifo_info` buffer.
Check the return value of cros_ec_cmd_xfer_status() and abort if the
number of bytes read does not match the expected length.

platform/chrome: cros_ec_typec: Reject out-of-bounds PD cap count
cros_typec_register_partner_pdos() copies the partner PDOs from the EC
TYPEC_STATUS response into the fixed caps_desc.pdo[PDO_MAX_OBJECTS] array.
memcpy(caps_desc.pdo, resp->source_cap_pdos,
sizeof(u32) * resp->source_cap_count);
...
memcpy(caps_desc.pdo, resp->sink_cap_pdos,
sizeof(u32) * resp->sink_cap_count);
PDO_MAX_OBJECTS is 7. source_cap_count and sink_cap_count are u8 fields
from the EC. The only check is that they are not both zero. If either is
larger than 7, the memcpy writes past the end of the array on the stack.
A count of 255 overflows it by about 1 KB. The EC source arrays are only
seven entries wide. A larger count reads past them too.
The ChromeOS EC firmware caps these counts today, so a compliant setup
does not hit this. The kernel should still validate these values rather
than trust them.
Validate the counts in cros_typec_register_partner_pdos() next to the
memcpy. Skip the PDO registration if either count is above PDO_MAX_OBJECTS.
The rest of cros_typec_handle_status() still runs so events are handled
and cleared.

cros_ec_sensor_ring_process_event() then uses unchecked to index

workqueue: Changes for v7.2
- Continued progress toward making alloc_workqueue() unbound by default:
more callers converted to WQ_PERCPU / system_percpu_wq / system_dfl_wq,
and new warnings for queues that use neither WQ_PERCPU nor WQ_UNBOUND
or the legacy system_wq / system_unbound_wq.
- Misc: drop the now-trivial apply_wqattrs_lock()/unlock() wrappers,
forbid the TEST_WORKQUEUE benchmark from being built-in, and fix a
spurious pointer level in the worker debug-dump path.
