Pull btrfs updates from David Sterba:
"A number of core changes that make things work better in general, code
is simpler and cleaner.
Core changes:
- per-inode file extent tree, for in memory tracking of contiguous
extent ranges to make sure i_size adjustments are accurate
- tree root structures are protected by reference counts, replacing
SRCU that did not cover some cases
- leak detector for tree root structures
- per-transaction pinned extent tracking
- buffer heads are replaced by bios for super block access
- speedup of extent back reference resolution, on an example test
scenario the runtime of send went down from a hour to minutes
- factor out locking scheme used for subvolume writer and NOCOW
exclusion, abstracted as DREW lock, double reader-writer exclusion
(allow either readers or writers)
- cleanup and abstract extent allocation policies, preparation for
zoned device support
- make reflink/clone_range work on inline extents
- add more cancellation point for relocation, improves long response
from 'balance cancel'
- add page migration callback for data pages
- switch to guid for uuids, with additional cleanups of the interface
- make ranged full fsyncs more efficient
- removal of obsolete ioctl flag BTRFS_SUBVOL_CREATE_ASYNC
- remove b-tree readahead from delayed refs paths, avoiding seek and
read unnecessary blocks
Features:
- v2 of ioctl to delete subvolumes, allowing to delete by id and more
future extensions
Fixes:
- fix qgroup rescan worker that could block umount
- fix crash during unmount due to race with delayed inode workers
- fix dellaloc flushing logic that could create unnecessary chunks
under heavy load
- fix missing file extent item for hole after ranged fsync
- several fixes in relocation error handling
Other:
- more documentation of relocation, device replace, space
reservations
- many random cleanups"

Merge branch 'sched-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull scheduler updates from Ingo Molnar:
"The main changes in this cycle are:
- Various NUMA scheduling updates: harmonize the load-balancer and
NUMA placement logic to not work against each other. The intended
result is better locality, better utilization and fewer migrations.
- Introduce Thermal Pressure tracking and optimizations, to improve
task placement on thermally overloaded systems.
- Implement frequency invariant scheduler accounting on (some) x86
CPUs. This is done by observing and sampling the 'recent' CPU
frequency average at ~tick boundaries. The CPU provides this data
via the APERF/MPERF MSRs. This hopefully makes our capacity
estimates more precise and keeps tasks on the same CPU better even
if it might seem overloaded at a lower momentary frequency. (As
usual, turbo mode is a complication that we resolve by observing
the maximum frequency and renormalizing to it.)
- Add asymmetric CPU capacity wakeup scan to improve capacity
utilization on asymmetric topologies. (big.LITTLE systems)
- PSI fixes and optimizations.
- RT scheduling capacity awareness fixes & improvements.
- Optimize the CONFIG_RT_GROUP_SCHED constraints code.
- Misc fixes, cleanups and optimizations - see the changelog for
details"

"Here are the io_uring changes for this merge window. Light on new
features this time around (just splice + buffer selection), lots of
cleanups, fixes, and improvements to existing support. In particular,
this contains:
- Cleanup fixed file update handling for stack fallback (Hillf)
- Re-work of how pollable async IO is handled, we no longer require
thread offload to handle that. Instead we rely using poll to drive
this, with task_work execution.
- In conjunction with the above, allow expendable buffer selection,
so that poll+recv (for example) no longer has to be a split
operation.
- Make sure we honor RLIMIT_FSIZE for buffered writes

btrfs: switch to per-transaction pinned extents
This commit flips the switch to start tracking/processing pinned extents on a per-transaction basis. It mostly replaces all references from btrfs_fs_info::(pinned_extents|freed_extents[]) to btrfs_transaction::pinned_extents. btrfs: introduce per-inode file extent tree
In order to keep track of where we have file extents on disk, and thus where it is safe to adjust the i_size to, we need to have a tree in place to keep track of the contiguous areas we have file extents for. Add helpers to use this tree, as it's not required for NO_HOLES file systems. We will use this by setting DIRTY for areas we know we have file extent item's set, and clearing it when we remove file extent items for truncation. rcu: Make rcu_barrier() account for offline no-CBs CPUs
Currently, rcu_barrier() ignores offline CPUs, However, it is possible
for an offline no-CBs CPU to have callbacks queued, and rcu_barrier()
must wait for those callbacks. This commit therefore makes rcu_barrier()
directly invoke the rcu_barrier_func() with interrupts disabled for such
CPUs. This requires passing the CPU number into this function so that
it can entrain the rcu_barrier() callback onto the correct CPU's callback
list, given that the code must instead execute on the current CPU.
While in the area, this commit fixes a bug where the first CPU's callback
might have been invoked before rcu_segcblist_entrain() returned, which
would also result in an early wakeup.

not the usage count before it to be consistent with other afs and rxrpc

Change the wording of the afs_call_trace_work trace ID label from "WORK" to
"QUEUE" to reflect the fact that it's queueing work, not doing work.

sched/pelt: Add support to track thermal pressure
Extrapolating on the existing framework to track rt/dl utilization using pelt signals, add a similar mechanism to track thermal pressure. The difference here from rt/dl utilization tracking is that, instead of tracking time spent by a CPU running a RT/DL task through util_avg, the average thermal pressure is tracked through load_avg. This is because thermal pressure signal is weighted time "delta" capacity unlike util_avg which is binary. "delta capacity" here means delta between the actual capacity of a CPU and the decreased capacity a CPU due to a thermal event. In order to track average thermal pressure, a new sched_avg variable avg_thermal is introduced. Function update_thermal_load_avg can be called to do the periodic bookkeeping (accumulate, decay and average) of the thermal pressure. bpf: Reliably preserve btf_trace_xxx types
btf_trace_xxx types, crucial for tp_btf BPF programs (raw tracepoint with
verifier-checked direct memory access), have to be preserved in kernel BTF to
allow verifier do its job and enforce type/memory safety. It was reported
([0]) that for kernels built with Clang current type-casting approach doesn't
preserve these types.
This patch fixes it by declaring an anonymous union for each registered
tracepoint, capturing both struct bpf_raw_event_map information, as well as
recording btf_trace_##call type reliably. Structurally, it's still the same
content as for a plain struct bpf_raw_event_map, so no other changes are
necessary.

io_uring: use poll driven retry for files that support it
Currently io_uring tries any request in a non-blocking manner, if it can, and then retries from a worker thread if we get -EAGAIN. Now that we have a new and fancy poll based retry backend, use that to retry requests if the file supports it. This means that, for example, an IORING_OP_RECVMSG on a socket no longer requires an async thread to complete the IO. If we get -EAGAIN reading from the socket in a non-blocking manner, we arm a poll handler for notification on when the socket becomes readable. When it does, the pending read is executed directly by the task again, through the io_uring task work handlers. Not only is this faster and more efficient, it also means we're not generating potentially tons of async threads that just sit and block, waiting for the IO to complete. The feature is marked with IORING_FEAT_FAST_POLL, meaning that async pollable IO is fast, and that poll<link>other_op is fast as well. Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> |

memcg: fix a crash in wb_workfn when a device disappears
Without memcg, there is a one-to-one mapping between the bdi and bdi_writeback structures. In this world, things are fairly straightforward; the first thing bdi_unregister() does is to shutdown the bdi_writeback structure (or wb), and part of that writeback ensures that no other work queued against the wb, and that the wb is fully drained. With memcg, however, there is a one-to-many relationship between the bdi and bdi_writeback structures; that is, there are multiple wb objects which can all point to a single bdi. There is a refcount which prevents the bdi object from being released (and hence, unregistered). So in theory, the bdi_unregister() *should* only get called once its refcount goes to zero (bdi_put will drop the refcount, and when it is zero, release_bdi gets called, which calls bdi_unregister). Unfortunately, del_gendisk() in block/gen_hd.c never got the memo about the Brave New memcg World, and calls bdi_unregister directly. It does this without informing the file system, or the memcg code, or anything else. This causes the root wb associated with the bdi to be unregistered, but none of the memcg-specific wb's are shutdown. So when one of these wb's are woken up to do delayed work, they try to dereference their wb->bdi->dev to fetch the device name, but unfortunately bdi->dev is now NULL, thanks to the bdi_unregister() called by del_gendisk(). As a result, *boom*. Fortunately, it looks like the rest of the writeback path is perfectly happy with bdi->dev and bdi->owner being NULL, so the simplest fix is to create a bdi_dev_name() function which can handle bdi->dev being NULL. This also allows us to bulletproof the writeback tracepoints to prevent them from dereferencing a NULL pointer and crashing the kernel if one is tracing with memcg's enabled, and an iSCSI device dies or a USB storage stick is pulled. The most common way of triggering this will be hotremoval of a device while writeback with memcg enabled is going on. It was triggering several times a day in a heavily loaded production environment. f2fs-for-5.6
In this series, we've implemented transparent compression experimentally. It supports LZO and LZ4, but will add more later as we investigate in the field more. At this point, the feature doesn't expose compressed space to user directly in order to guarantee potential data updates later to the space. Instead, the main goal is to reduce data writes to flash disk as much as possible, resulting in extending disk life time as well as relaxing IO congestion. Alternatively, we're also considering to add ioctl() to reclaim compressed space and show it to user after putting the immutable bit. Enhancement: - add compression support - avoid unnecessary locks in quota ops - harden power-cut scenario for zoned block devices - use private bio_set to avoid IO congestion - replace GC mutex with rwsem to serialize callers Bug fix: - fix dentry consistency and memory corruption in rename()'s error case - fix wrong swap extent reports - fix casefolding bugs - change lock coverage to avoid deadlock - avoid GFP_KERNEL under f2fs_lock_op And, we've cleaned up sysfs entries to prepare no debugfs. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEE00UqedjCtOrGVvQiQBSofoJIUNIFAl4zInwACgkQQBSofoJI UNL4Tg/+JBbVEFa3IUBGMdbjfgd/g0Jye++iMAYYGRWT6Ll/IGcHRV9NunITjgWU mBZqdhI28kXeiGCcewB1ZvivjLx22X4n6yevHk2B5A6PNe9IDCHi0HOAhJJHkjPH ecv2L+vX3Oj4y0+H7JNz9Fo3OIPJvMPtCQWlg1z+VQyhB85zNP7fZlvvIY4tG8yw ERo0YNotLqwcF1BxCwNbAhV3aJGDxar+MI//yNzpiwDX7IptVpqestfcoIYc9kKL 4kSWRyEIGwcuIeyoM6aofGS9t4Z/Oe/gdqcxNr6l5n0Q/tMTpb4b/fJFGNr6RRx9 X9NQo8flkQb2DEIOP0DVpO2aPebzsVtzg3LZUOLA83+wCHfwINtHai2Dy2zDJ2my BrVdou8fe2oxoaYihJg/Tz9cd0nA/6mZArtpYvDImAmX/xuGOvVk9zZkXNwc9nVX EyVzy0vW4lA6gAIJ95aG6DDhJcAtVoy0MhBRWG92Pufxhn9aW24AV63ChWUf9DRx /3RqpMAuQ3UC2gOxXKKnr54lsdhUIMn/y9sjROkVvQ1BvgRVxO8I4GFvMHMKv9pR 9KXiVRdzyYERyoL4+MF7A2zTnw+RHL4RVILa85p2ALGy2jQ1UuNUQi0BN9x2u1v8 S1ifNNX8SwOP+83ImFJhhn3HybpFQ45aLO3F7ZjKBQAnufJu+xw= =zeoY -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'f2fs-for-5.6' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jaegeuk/f2fs Pull f2fs updates from Jaegeuk Kim: "In this series, we've implemented transparent compression experimentally. Merge tag 'for-5.6-tag' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kdave/linux
Pull btrfs updates from David Sterba:
"Features, highlights:
- async discard
- "mount -o discard=async" to enable it
- freed extents are not discarded immediatelly, but grouped
together and trimmed later, with IO rate limiting
- the "sync" mode submits short extents that could have been
ignored completely by the device, for SATA prior to 3.1 the
requests are unqueued and have a big impact on performance
- the actual discard IO requests have been moved out of
transaction commit to a worker thread, improving commit latency
- IO rate and request size can be tuned by sysfs files, for now
enabled only with CONFIG_BTRFS_DEBUG as we might need to
add/delete the files and don't have a stable-ish ABI for
general use, defaults are conservative
- export device state info in sysfs, eg. missing, writeable
- no discard of extents known to be untouched on disk (eg. after
reservation)
- device stats reset is logged with process name and PID that called
the ioctl
Fixes:
- fix missing hole after hole punching and fsync when using NO_HOLES
- writeback: range cyclic mode could miss some dirty pages and lead
to OOM
- two more corner cases for metadata_uuid change after power loss
during the change
- fix infinite loop during fsync after mix of rename operations
Core changes:
- qgroup assign returns ENOTCONN when quotas not enabled, used to
return EINVAL that was confusing
- device closing does not need to allocate memory anymore
- snapshot aware code got removed, disabled for years due to
performance problems, reimplmentation will allow to select wheter
defrag breaks or does not break COW on shared extents
- tree-checker:
- check leaf chunk item size, cross check against number of
stripes
- verify location keys for DIR_ITEM, DIR_INDEX and XATTR items
- new self test for physical -> logical mapping code, used for super
block range exclusion
- assertion helpers/macros updated to avoid objtool "unreachable
code" reports on older compilers or config option combinations"

rcu: Remove kfree_rcu() special casing and lazy-callback handling
This commit removes kfree_rcu() special-casing and the lazy-callback handling from Tree RCU. It moves some of this special casing to Tiny RCU, the removal of which will be the subject of later commits. This results in a nice negative delta. Suggested-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Joel Fernandes (Google) <joel@joelfernandes.org> [ paulmck: Add slab.h #include, thanks to kbuild test robot <lkp@intel.com>. ] Signed-off-by: Paul E. Various tracing fixes:
- Fix a function comparison warning for a xen trace event macro
- Fix a double perf_event linking to a trace_uprobe_filter for multiple events
- Fix suspicious RCU warnings in trace event code for using
list_for_each_entry_rcu() when the "_rcu" portion wasn't needed.
- Fix a bug in the histogram code when using the same variable
- Fix a NULL pointer dereference when tracefs lockdown enabled and calling
trace_set_default_clock()
This v2 version contains:
- A fix to a bug found with the double perf_event linking patch
