fa06520fa0 perf timechart: Fix cat_backtrace() use-after-free on corrupted callchain
cat_backtrace() uses open_memstream() to build a backtrace string.
When an invalid callchain context is encountered, zfree(&p) frees
the memstream buffer, then the exit path calls fclose(f), which
flushes to the already-freed buffer — a use-after-free. The function
then returns a dangling pointer that the caller passes to a handler
and subsequently double-frees.

Fix by replacing the zfree(&p) with a 'corrupted' flag. At the exit
label, always fclose(f) first (which finalizes the buffer), then
conditionally free it when corrupted. This ensures the memstream
contract is honored: the buffer remains valid until fclose().

While here, update the machine__resolve failure message to include
file_offset and the event type name, matching the pattern from the
preceding series. Also update the three legacy power event handlers
under SUPPORT_OLD_POWER_EVENTS to include file_offset in their
out-of-bounds CPU messages for consistency.

a41a462334 perf timechart: Bounds check CPU
Prevent out-of-bounds writes/reads in CPU state tracking arrays by enforcing
strict MAX_CPUS bounds checks in timechart's tracepoint handlers.

Ensure that cpu_id retrieved from idle/frequency and sched tracepoints is less
than MAX_CPUS before indexing into cpus_cstate_state, cpus_cstate_start_times,
and similar tracking arrays. Also, fix an off-by-one error in the CPU iteration
loop inside end_sample_processing() by changing the loop condition from
'cpu <= tchart->numcpus' to 'cpu < tchart->numcpus'.

00b36b394c perf timechart: Fix memory leaks
Resolve a major execution-time leak of backtrace strings in the timechart tool.

- Modify cat_backtrace() to return dynamically allocated memory via
  open_memstream(), transferring ownership to the caller.
- Free the returned backtrace string inside process_sample_event() immediately
  after invoking the tracepoint handler.
- In handlers like pid_put_sample() and sched_wakeup(), make a separate copy of
  the backtrace using strdup() if it needs to be persisted in the sample struct,
  preventing lifetime issues and double-free vulnerabilities.

f182573e06 perf tools: Add layout support for --symfs option
Add support for parsing an optional layout parameter in the --symfs
command line option. The format is:

  --symfs <directory[,layout]>

Where layout can be:
  - 'hierarchy': matches full path (default)
  - 'flat': only matches base name

When debugging symbol files from a copy of the filesystem (e.g., from a
container or remote machine), the debug files are often stored in a
flat directory structure with only filenames, not the full original
paths. In this case, using 'flat' layout allows perf to find debug
symbols by matching only the filename rather than the full path.

For example, given a binary path like:
  /build/output/lib/foo.so

With 'perf report --symfs /debug/files,flat', perf will look for:
  /debug/files/foo.so

Instead of:
  /debug/files/build/output/lib/foo.so

This is particularly useful when:
- Extracting debug files from containers with different directory layouts
- Working with build systems that flatten directory structures

378ef0f5d9 perf build: Use libtraceevent from the system
Remove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make command
line variables.

If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to the
build, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support.

This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace".

CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT is used to control enablement in Build/Makefiles,
HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is used in C code.

Without HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT tracepoints are disabled and as such the
commands kmem, kwork, lock, sched and timechart are removed. The
majority of commands continue to work including "perf test".

Committer notes:

Fixed up a tools/perf/util/Build reject and added:

  #include <traceevent/event-parse.h>

to tools/perf/util/scripting-engines/trace-event-perl.c.

Had to tweak tools/perf/util/setup.py to make sure the python binding
shared object links with libtraceevent if -DHAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is
present in CFLAGS.

Building with NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 uncovered some more build failures:

- Make building of data-convert-bt.c to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y

- perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += scripts/

- bpf_kwork.o needs also to be dependent on CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y

- The python binding needed some fixups and util/trace-event.c can't be
  built and linked with the python binding shared object, so remove it
  in tools/perf/util/setup.py and exclude it from the list of
  dependencies in the python/perf.so Makefile.perf target.

Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build
failures:

- The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that
  traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case
  when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files,
  now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like
  the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints.

- We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with
  CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and
  tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when
  setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't
  detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here
  to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having
  CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean
  way.

From Athira:

<quote>
tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build
-perf-y += kvm-stat.o
+perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o
</quote>

Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests.

- s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if
  HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT.

Also from Athira:

<quote>
With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment:
- Without libtraceevent-devel installed
- With libtraceevent-devel installed
- With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1”
</quote>

Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for
consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/.

ae0f4eb34f perf tools: Enhance the matching of sub-commands abbreviations
We support short command 'rec*' for 'record' and 'rep*' for 'report' in

6549a8c0c3 perf tools: Replace zero-length array with flexible-array
The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array
member[1][2], introduced in C99:

struct foo {
        int stuff;
        struct boo array[];
};

By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning in
case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which will
help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.

Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by this
change:

"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]

sizeof(flexible-array-member) triggers a warning because flexible array
members have incomplete type[1]. There are some instances of code in
which the sizeof operator is being incorrectly/erroneously applied to
zero-length arrays and the result is zero. Such instances may be hiding
some bugs. So, this work (flexible-array member conversions) will also
help to get completely rid of those sorts of issues.

This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

Committer notes:

Fix 'perf tests topology' case, where we use that TEST_ASSERT_VAL(...,
session), i.e. we need to pass zero in case of failure, which was the
case before when NULL was returned by perf_session__new() for failure,
but now we need to negate the result of IS_ERR(session) to respect that
TEST_ASSERT_VAL) expectation of zero meaning failure.

Also we don't need to include perf_event.h in
tools/perf/lib/include/perf/evsel.h, forward declaring 'struct
perf_event_attr' is enough. And this even fixes the build in some
systems where things are used somewhere down the include path from
perf_event.h without defining __always_inline.

2d4f27999b perf data: Add global path holder
Add a 'path' member to 'struct perf_data'. It will keep the configured
path for the data (const char *). The path in struct perf_data_file is
now dynamically allocated (duped) from it.

This scheme is useful/used in following patches where struct
perf_data::path holds the 'configure' directory path and struct
perf_data_file::path holds the allocated path for specific files.

Also it actually makes the code little simpler.

d7a8c4a6a0 perf tools: Add missing open_memstream() prototype for systems lacking it
There are systems such as the Android NDK API level 24 has the
open_memstream() function but doesn't provide a prototype, adding noise
to the build:

  builtin-timechart.c: In function 'cat_backtrace':
  builtin-timechart.c:486:2: warning: implicit declaration of function 'open_memstream' [-Wimplicit-function-declaration]
    FILE *f = open_memstream(&p, &p_len);
    ^
  builtin-timechart.c:486:2: warning: nested extern declaration of 'open_memstream' [-Wnested-externs]
  builtin-timechart.c:486:12: warning: initialization makes pointer from integer without a cast
    FILE *f = open_memstream(&p, &p_len);
              ^

Define a LACKS_OPEN_MEMSTREAM_PROTOTYPE define so that code needing that
can get a prototype.

Checked in the bionic git repo to be available since level 23:

https://android.googlesource.com/platform/bionic/+/master/libc/include/stdio.h#241

4546263d72 perf thread: Introduce thread__find_symbol()
Out of thread__find_addr_location(..., MAP__FUNCTION, ...), idea here is to
continue removing references to MAP__{FUNCTION,VARIABLE} ahead of
getting both types of symbols in the same rbtree, as various places do
two lookups, looking first at MAP__FUNCTION, then at MAP__VARIABLE.

So thread__find_symbol() will eventually do just that, and 'struct
symbol' will have the symbol type, for code that cares about that.
