979e87ab1f perf symbol: Add setters for bitfields sharing a byte to avoid concurrent update issues
A problem with putting bitfields into struct symbol is that other bits in
the symbol could be updated concurrently and only one update to the
underlying storage unit happen, leading to lost updates.

To avoid this, use atomics to atomically read or set part of 16-bits
of flags in the symbol. Add accessors to simplify this.

The idle value has 3 values in preparation for a later change that
will lazily update it.

865224bfde perf tools: Include file offset and event type name in skip messages
Add the perf.data file offset and use perf_event__name() instead of raw
event type integers in the 'problem processing event, skipping it'
messages emitted by process_sample_event() callbacks across annotate,
c2c, diff, kmem, kvm, kwork, lock, report, script, and build-id.

This lets users cross-reference skipped events with 'perf report -D'
output. Also add explicit #include "util/event.h" and <inttypes.h>
where needed to avoid depending on transitive includes.

48d004c074 perf kwork: Bounds check work->cpu before indexing cpus_runtime[]
work->cpu comes from sample->cpu which is (u32)-1 when
PERF_SAMPLE_CPU is absent. Stored as int, this becomes -1
which passes the signed BUG_ON(work->cpu >= MAX_NR_CPUS) but
causes an out-of-bounds access on cpus_runtime[-1].

Replace the BUG_ON in top_calc_total_runtime() with an unsigned
bounds check that skips entries with invalid CPU values, counting
them for a summary warning.

Guard the same index in profile_event_match() (bitmap OOB),
top_calc_idle_time(), top_calc_irq_runtime(), top_calc_cpu_usage(),
and top_calc_load_runtime(). Also guard against division by zero
in top_calc_cpu_usage() when no runtime was accumulated.

e898c505b0 perf kwork: Fix memory management of kwork_work
This commit addresses several memory management issues in builtin-kwork.c:

1. Implements a global cleanup function perf_kwork__exit to free all
   kwork_work and kwork_atom_page objects at the end of the command.

2. Ensures all 'name' fields in struct kwork_work are malloc-ed (or NULL)
   and properly freed by using strdup and zfree.

3. Fixes memory leaks in top_merge_tasks where kwork_work objects were
   dropped without being freed.

4. Adds robustness with NULL checks for name fields.

5. Fixes workqueue_work_init to correctly resolve and strdup kernel
   function names, preventing bad-free errors.

046fd8206d perf tools: Make more global variables static
`make check` will run sparse on the perf code base. A frequent warning
is "warning: symbol '...' was not declared. Should it be static?" Go
through and make global definitions without declarations static.

In some cases it is deliberate due to dlsym accessing the symbol, this
change doesn't clean up the missing declarations for perf test suites.

Sometimes things can opportunistically be made const.

Making somethings static exposed unused functions warnings, so
restructuring of ifdefs was necessary for that.

These changes reduce the size of the perf binary by 568 bytes.

Committer notes:

Refreshed the patch, the original one fell thru the cracks, updated the
size reduction.

Remove the trace-event-scripting.c changes, break the build, noticed
with container builds and with sashiko:

f182573e06 perf tools: Add layout support for --symfs option
Add support for parsing an optional layout parameter in the --symfs
command line option. The format is:

  --symfs <directory[,layout]>

Where layout can be:
  - 'hierarchy': matches full path (default)
  - 'flat': only matches base name

When debugging symbol files from a copy of the filesystem (e.g., from a
container or remote machine), the debug files are often stored in a
flat directory structure with only filenames, not the full original
paths. In this case, using 'flat' layout allows perf to find debug
symbols by matching only the filename rather than the full path.

For example, given a binary path like:
  /build/output/lib/foo.so

With 'perf report --symfs /debug/files,flat', perf will look for:
  /debug/files/foo.so

Instead of:
  /debug/files/build/output/lib/foo.so

This is particularly useful when:
- Extracting debug files from containers with different directory layouts
- Working with build systems that flatten directory structures

1a5efc9e13 libsubcmd: Don't free the usage string
Currently, commands which depend on 'parse_options_subcommand()' don't
show the usage string, and instead show '(null)'

    $ ./perf sched
	Usage: (null)

    -D, --dump-raw-trace dump raw trace in ASCII
    -f, --force don't complain, do it
    -i, --input <file> input file name
    -v, --verbose be more verbose (show symbol address, etc)

'parse_options_subcommand()' is generally expected to initialise the usage
string, with information in the passed 'subcommands[]' array

This behaviour was changed in:

  230a7a71f9 ("libsubcmd: Fix parse-options memory leak")

Where the generated usage string is deallocated, and usage[0] string is
reassigned as NULL.

As discussed in [1], free the allocated usage string in the main
function itself, and don't reset usage string to NULL in
parse_options_subcommand

With this change, the behaviour is restored.

    $ ./perf sched
        Usage: perf sched [<options>] {record|latency|map|replay|script|timehist}

           -D, --dump-raw-trace dump raw trace in ASCII
           -f, --force don't complain, do it
           -i, --input <file> input file name
           -v, --verbose be more verbose (show symbol address, etc)

07fde75306 perf kwork: Use zfree() to avoid possibly accessing dangling pointers
When freeing a->b it is good practice to set a->b to NULL using
zfree(&a->b) so that when we have a bug where a reference to a freed 'a'
pointer is kept somewhere, we can more quickly cause a segfault if some
code tries to use a->b.

Convert one such case in the 'perf kwork' codebase.

55c40e5052 perf kwork top: Introduce new top utility
Some common tools for collecting statistics on CPU usage, such as top,
obtain statistics from timer interrupt sampling, and then periodically
read statistics from /proc/stat.

This method has some deviations:

1. In the tick interrupt, the time between the last tick and the current
   tick is counted in the current task. However, the task may be running
   only part of the time.
2. For each task, the top tool periodically reads the /proc/{PID}/status
   information. For tasks with a short life cycle, it may be missed.

In conclusion, the top tool cannot accurately collect statistics on the
CPU usage and running time of tasks.

The statistical method based on sched_switch tracepoint can accurately
calculate the CPU usage of all tasks. This method is applicable to
scenarios where performance comparison data is of high precision.

Example usage:

  # perf kwork

   Usage: perf kwork [<options>] {record|report|latency|timehist|top}

      -D, --dump-raw-trace dump raw trace in ASCII
      -f, --force don't complain, do it
      -k, --kwork <kwork> list of kwork to profile (irq, softirq, workqueue, sched, etc)
      -v, --verbose be more verbose (show symbol address, etc)

  # perf kwork -k sched record -- perf bench sched messaging -g 1 -l 10000
  # Running 'sched/messaging' benchmark:
  # 20 sender and receiver processes per group
  # 1 groups == 40 processes run

       Total time: 14.074 [sec]
  [ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
  [ perf record: Captured and wrote 15.886 MB perf.data (129472 samples) ]
  # perf kwork top

8ab12a2038 perf callchain: Use pthread keys for tls callchain_cursor
Pthread keys are more portable than __thread and allow the association
of a destructor with the key. Use the destructor to clean up TLS
callchain cursors to aid understanding memory leaks.

Committer notes:

Had to fixup a series of unconverted places and also check for the
return of get_tls_callchain_cursor() as it may fail and return NULL.

In that unlikely case we now either print something to a file, if the
caller was expecting to print a callchain, or return an error code to
state that resolving the callchain isn't possible.

In some cases this was made easier because thread__resolve_callchain()
already can fail for other reasons, so this new one (cursor == NULL) can
be added and the callers don't have to explicitely check for this new
condition.

I needed to initialize result to sample->ip to make sure is set to

logic as build_alloc_func_list() already does debugging/error prints
about what went wrong if it takes the 'goto out'.

378ef0f5d9 perf build: Use libtraceevent from the system
Remove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make command
line variables.

If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to the
build, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support.

This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace".

CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT is used to control enablement in Build/Makefiles,
HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is used in C code.

Without HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT tracepoints are disabled and as such the
commands kmem, kwork, lock, sched and timechart are removed. The
majority of commands continue to work including "perf test".

Committer notes:

Fixed up a tools/perf/util/Build reject and added:

  #include <traceevent/event-parse.h>

to tools/perf/util/scripting-engines/trace-event-perl.c.

Had to tweak tools/perf/util/setup.py to make sure the python binding
shared object links with libtraceevent if -DHAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is
present in CFLAGS.

Building with NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 uncovered some more build failures:

- Make building of data-convert-bt.c to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y

- perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += scripts/

- bpf_kwork.o needs also to be dependent on CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y

- The python binding needed some fixups and util/trace-event.c can't be
  built and linked with the python binding shared object, so remove it
  in tools/perf/util/setup.py and exclude it from the list of
  dependencies in the python/perf.so Makefile.perf target.

Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build
failures:

- The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that
  traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case
  when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files,
  now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like
  the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints.

- We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with
  CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and
  tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when
  setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't
  detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here
  to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having
  CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean
  way.

From Athira:

<quote>
tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build
-perf-y += kvm-stat.o
+perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o
</quote>

Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests.

- s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if
  HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT.

Also from Athira:

<quote>
With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment:
- Without libtraceevent-devel installed
- With libtraceevent-devel installed
- With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1”
</quote>

Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for
consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/.

49bd97c28b perf tools: Use dedicated non-atomic clear/set bit helpers
Use the dedicated non-atomic helpers for {clear,set}_bit() and their
test variants, i.e. the double-underscore versions. Depsite being
defined in atomic.h, and despite the kernel versions being atomic in the
kernel, tools' {clear,set}_bit() helpers aren't actually atomic. Move
to the double-underscore versions so that the versions that are expected
to be atomic (for kernel developers) can be made atomic without
affecting users that don't want atomic operations.

No functional change intended.

daf07d2207 perf kwork: Implement BPF trace
'perf record' generates perf.data, which generates extra interrupts
for hard disk, amount of data to be collected increases with time.

Using eBPF trace can process the data in kernel, which solves the
preceding two problems.

Add -b/--use-bpf option for latency and report to support
tracing kwork events using eBPF:

1. Create bpf prog and attach to tracepoints,
2. Start tracing after command is entered,
3. After user hit "ctrl+c", stop tracing and report,
4. Support CPU and name filtering.

This commit implements the framework code and
does not add specific event support.

Test cases:

  # perf kwork rep -h

   Usage: perf kwork report [<options>]

      -b, --use-bpf Use BPF to measure kwork runtime
      -C, --cpu <cpu> list of cpus to profile
      -i, --input <file> input file name
      -n, --name <name> event name to profile
      -s, --sort <key[,key2...]>
                            sort by key(s): runtime, max, count
      -S, --with-summary Show summary with statistics
          --time <str> Time span for analysis (start,stop)

  # perf kwork lat -h

   Usage: perf kwork latency [<options>]
