88b126b39f net: netlink: don't set nsid on local notifications
In most cases, notifications on sockets with NETLINK_LISTEN_ALL_NSID
do not contain NSID in their ancillary data in case the event is local
to the listener.

However, when a self-referential NSID is allocated for a namespace,
every local notification starts sending this ID to the user space.

This is problematic, because the listener cannot tell if those
notifications are local or not anymore without making extra requests
to figure out if the provided NSID is local or not. The listener
can also not figure out the local NSID beforehand as it can be
allocated at any point in time by other processes, changing the
structure of the future notifications for everyone.

The value is practically not useful, since it's the namespace's own
ID that the application has to obtain from other sources in order to
figure out if it's the same or not. So, for the application it's
just an extra busy work with no benefits. Moreover, applications
that do not know about this quirk may be mishandling notifications
with NSID set as notifications from remote namespaces. This is the
case for ovs-vswitchd and the iproute2's 'ip monitor' that stops
printing 'current' and starts printing the nsid number mid-session.

Lack of clear documentation for this behavior is also not helping.

A search though open-source projects doesn't reveal any projects
that use NETNSA_NSID_NOT_ASSIGNED and rely on metadata to contain
self-referential NSIDs (expected, since the value is not useful).
Quite the opposite, as already mentioned, there are few applications
that rely on NSID to not be present in local events.

Since the value is not useful and actively harmful in some cases,
let's not report it for local events, making the notifications more
consistent.

Also adding some blank lines for readability.

70f8592ee9 net: netlink: fix sending unassigned nsid after assigned one
If the current skb is not shared, it is re-used directly for all the
sockets subscribed to the notification. If we have remote all-nsid
socket receiving a message first, then the 'nsid_is_set' will be
set to 'true'. If the nsid is NOT_ASSIGNED for the next socket in
the list, the 'nsid_is_set' will remain 'true' and the negative value
is be delivered to the user space. All subsequent nsid values will be
delivered as well, since there is no code path that sets the flag
back to 'false'.

Fix that by always dropping the flag to 'false' first.

390bf43b77 netlink: convert to getsockopt_iter
Convert AF_NETLINK's getsockopt implementation to use the new
getsockopt_iter callback with sockopt_t.

Key changes:
- Replace (char __user *optval, int __user *optlen) with sockopt_t *opt
- Use opt->optlen for buffer length (input) and returned size (output)
- Use copy_to_iter() instead of put_user()/copy_to_user()
- For NETLINK_LIST_MEMBERSHIPS: walk the groups bitmap and emit each
u32 sequentially via copy_to_iter(), then set opt->optlen to the
  total size required (ALIGN(BITS_TO_BYTES(ngroups), sizeof(u32))).
The wrapper writes opt->optlen back to userspace even on partial
failure, preserving the existing API that lets userspace discover
  the needed allocation size.

91a4855d6c Networking changes for 7.1.
Core & protocols
 ----------------

  - Support HW queue leasing, allowing containers to be granted access
to HW queues for zero-copy operations and AF_XDP.

  - Number of code moves to help the compiler with inlining.
Avoid output arguments for returning drop reason where possible.

  - Rework drop handling within qdiscs to include more metadata
about the reason and dropping qdisc in the tracepoints.

  - Remove the rtnl_lock use from IP Multicast Routing.

  - Pack size information into the Rx Flow Steering table pointer
itself. This allows making the table itself a flat array of u32s,
thus making the table allocation size a power of two.

  - Report TCP delayed ack timer information via socket diag.

  - Add ip_local_port_step_width sysctl to allow distributing the randomly
selected ports more evenly throughout the allowed space.

  - Add support for per-route tunsrc in IPv6 segment routing.

  - Start work of switching sockopt handling to iov_iter.

  - Improve dynamic recvbuf sizing in MPTCP, limit burstiness and avoid
    buffer size drifting up.

  - Support MSG_EOR in MPTCP.

  - Add stp_mode attribute to the bridge driver for STP mode selection.
This addresses concerns about call_usermodehelper() usage.

  - Remove UDP-Lite support (as announced in 2023).

  - Remove support for building IPv6 as a module.
Remove the now unnecessary function calling indirection.

 Cross-tree stuff
 ----------------

  - Move Michael MIC code from generic crypto into wireless,
it's considered insecure but some WiFi networks still need it.

 Netfilter
 ---------

  - Switch nft_fib_ipv6 module to no longer need temporary dst_entry
object allocations by using fib6_lookup() + RCU.
Florian W reports this gets us ~13% higher packet rate.

  - Convert IPVS's global __ip_vs_mutex to per-net service_mutex and
switch the service tables to be per-net. Convert some code that
walks the service lists to use RCU instead of the service_mutex.

  - Add more opinionated input validation to lower security exposure.

  - Make IPVS hash tables to be per-netns and resizable.

 Wireless
 --------

  - Finished assoc frame encryption/EPPKE/802.1X-over-auth.

  - Radar detection improvements.

  - Add 6 GHz incumbent signal detection APIs.

  - Multi-link support for FILS, probe response templates and
    client probing.

  - New APIs and mac80211 support for NAN (Neighbor Aware Networking,
aka Wi-Fi Aware) so less work must be in firmware.

 Driver API
 ----------

  - Add numerical ID for devlink instances (to avoid having to create
fake bus/device pairs just to have an ID). Support shared devlink
    instances which span multiple PFs.

  - Add standard counters for reporting pause storm events
    (implement in mlx5 and fbnic).

  - Add configuration API for completion writeback buffering
    (implement in mana).

  - Support driver-initiated change of RSS context sizes.

  - Support DPLL monitoring input frequency (implement in zl3073x).

  - Support per-port resources in devlink (implement in mlx5).

 Misc
 ----

  - Expand the YAML spec for Netfilter.

8f921f6100 netlink: update outdated comment
The function netlink_clear_multicast_users() was removed as unused
in commit 2173f8d953 ("netlink: cleanup tap related functions").
Update the comment in netlink_change_ngroups() to remove the stale
reference, replacing it with a general description of the behavior
while preserving the warning.

net: change sock.sk_ino and sock_i_ino() to u64
inode->i_ino is being converted to a u64. sock.sk_ino (which caches the
inode number) must also be widened to avoid truncation on 32-bit
architectures where unsigned long is only 32 bits.

Change sk_ino from unsigned long to u64, and update the return type
of sock_i_ino() to match. Fix all format strings that print the
result of sock_i_ino() (%lu -> %llu), and widen the intermediate
variables and function parameters in the diag modules that were
using int to hold the inode number.

Note that the UAPI socket diag structures (inet_diag_msg.idiag_inode,
unix_diag_msg.udiag_ino, etc.) are all __u32 and cannot be changed
without breaking the ABI. The assignments to those fields will
silently truncate, which is the existing behavior.

bf4afc53b7 Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using

    git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
        xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'

to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.

Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.

For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

69050f8d6d treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:

Single allocations:	kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)

Array allocations:	kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)

Flex array allocations:	kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)

(where TYPE may also be *VAR)

The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

759dfc7d04 netlink: avoid infinite retry looping in netlink_unicast()
netlink_attachskb() checks for the socket's read memory allocation
constraints. Firstly, it has:

  rmem < READ_ONCE(sk->sk_rcvbuf)

to check if the just increased rmem value fits into the socket's receive
buffer. If not, it proceeds and tries to wait for the memory under:

  rmem + skb->truesize > READ_ONCE(sk->sk_rcvbuf)

The checks don't cover the case when skb->truesize + sk->sk_rmem_alloc is
equal to sk->sk_rcvbuf. Thus the function neither successfully accepts
these conditions, nor manages to reschedule the task - and is called in
retry loop for indefinite time which is caught as:

a215b57239 netlink: make sure we allow at least one dump skb
Commit under Fixes tightened up the memory accounting for Netlink
sockets. Looks like the accounting is too strict for some existing
use cases, Marek reported issues with nl80211 / WiFi iw CLI.

To reduce number of iterations Netlink dumps try to allocate
messages based on the size of the buffer passed to previous
recvmsg() calls. If user space uses a larger buffer in recvmsg()
than sk_rcvbuf we will allocate an skb we won't be able to queue.

Make sure we always allow at least one skb to be queued.
Same workaround is already present in netlink_attachskb().
Alternative would be to cap the allocation size to
  rcvbuf - rmem_alloc
but as I said, the workaround is already present in other places.

ae8f160e7e netlink: Fix wraparounds of sk->sk_rmem_alloc.
Netlink has this pattern in some places

  if (atomic_read(&sk->sk_rmem_alloc) > sk->sk_rcvbuf)
  	atomic_add(skb->truesize, &sk->sk_rmem_alloc);

, which has the same problem fixed by commit 5a465a0da1 ("udp:
Fix multiple wraparounds of sk->sk_rmem_alloc.").

For example, if we set INT_MAX to SO_RCVBUFFORCE, the condition
is always false as the two operands are of int.

Then, a single socket can eat as many skb as possible until OOM
happens, and we can see multiple wraparounds of sk->sk_rmem_alloc.

Let's fix it by using atomic_add_return() and comparing the two
variables as unsigned int.

5c70eb5c59 net: better track kernel sockets lifetime
While kernel sockets are dismantled during pernet_operations->exit(),
their freeing can be delayed by any tx packets still held in qdisc
or device queues, due to skb_set_owner_w() prior calls.

This then trigger the following warning from ref_tracker_dir_exit() [1]

To fix this, make sure that kernel sockets own a reference on net->passive.

Add sk_net_refcnt_upgrade() helper, used whenever a kernel socket
is converted to a refcounted one.

438989137a netlink: Unset cb_running when terminating dump on release
When we terminated the dump, the callback isn't running, so cb_running
should be set to false to be logically consistent.

cb_running signifies whether a dump is ongoing. It is set to true in
cb->start(), and is checked in netlink_dump() to be true initially.
After the dump, it is set to false in the same function.

This is just a cleanup, no path should access this field on a closed
socket.

75e2c86c7b net: netlink: catch attempts to send empty messages
syzbot can figure out a way to redirect a netlink message to a tap.
Sending empty skbs to devices is not valid and we end up hitting
a skb_assert_len() in __dev_queue_xmit().

Make catching these mistakes easier, assert the skb size directly
in netlink core.

3bf39fa849 netlink: fix false positive warning in extack during dumps
Commit under fixes extended extack reporting to dumps.
It works under normal conditions, because extack errors are
usually reported during ->start() or the first ->dump(),
it's quite rare that the dump starts okay but fails later.
If the dump does fail later, however, the input skb will
already have the initiating message pulled, so checking
if bad attr falls within skb->data will fail.

Switch the check to using nlh, which is always valid.

syzbot found a way to hit that scenario by filling up
the receive queue. In this case we initiate a dump
but don't call ->dump() until there is read space for
an skb.

fcc79e1714 Networking changes for 6.13.
The most significant set of changes is the per netns RTNL. The new
behavior is disabled by default, regression risk should be contained.

Notably the new config knob PTP_1588_CLOCK_VMCLOCK will inherit its
default value from PTP_1588_CLOCK_KVM, as the first is intended to be
a more reliable replacement for the latter.

 Core
 ----

  - Started a very large, in-progress, effort to make the RTNL lock
scope per network-namespace, thus reducing the lock contention
significantly in the containerized use-case, comprising:
    - RCU-ified some relevant slices of the FIB control path
    - introduce basic per netns locking helpers
    - namespacified the IPv4 address hash table
    - remove rtnl_register{,_module}() in favour of rtnl_register_many()
    - refactor rtnl_{new,del,set}link() moving as much validation as
      possible out of RTNL lock
    - convert all phonet doit() and dumpit() handlers to RCU
    - convert IPv4 addresses manipulation to per-netns RTNL
    - convert virtual interface creation to per-netns RTNL
the per-netns lock infra is guarded by the CONFIG_DEBUG_NET_SMALL_RTNL
knob, disabled by default ad interim.

  - Introduce NAPI suspension, to efficiently switching between busy
polling (NAPI processing suspended) and normal processing.

  - Migrate the IPv4 routing input, output and control path from direct
ToS usage to DSCP macros. This is a work in progress to make ECN
    handling consistent and reliable.

  - Add drop reasons support to the IPv4 rotue input path, allowing
better introspection in case of packets drop.

  - Make FIB seqnum lockless, dropping RTNL protection for read
    access.

  - Make inet{,v6} addresses hashing less predicable.

  - Allow providing timestamp OPT_ID via cmsg, to correlate TX packets
    and timestamps

Things we sprinkled into general kernel code
 --------------------------------------------

  - Add small file operations for debugfs, to reduce the struct ops size.

  - Refactoring and optimization for the implementation of page_frag API,
This is a preparatory work to consolidate the page_frag
    implementation.

 Netfilter
 ---------

  - Optimize set element transactions to reduce memory consumption

  - Extended netlink error reporting for attribute parser failure.

  - Make legacy xtables configs user selectable, giving users
the option to configure iptables without enabling any other config.

  - Address a lot of false-positive RCU issues, pointed by recent
    CI improvements.

 BPF
 ---

  - Put xsk sockets on a struct diet and add various cleanups. Overall,
this helps to bump performance by 12% for some workloads.

  - Extend BPF selftests to increase coverage of XDP features in
    combination with BPF cpumap.

  - Optimize and homogenize bpf_csum_diff helper for all archs and also
add a batch of new BPF selftests for it.

  - Extend netkit with an option to delegate skb->{mark,priority}
    scrubbing to its BPF program.

  - Make the bpf_get_netns_cookie() helper available also to tc(x) BPF
    programs.

 Protocols
 ---------

  - Introduces 4-tuple hash for connected udp sockets, speeding-up
    significantly connected sockets lookup.

  - Add a fastpath for some TCP timers that usually expires after close,
    the socket lock contention.

  - Add inbound and outbound xfrm state caches to speed up state lookups.

  - Avoid sending MPTCP advertisements on stale subflows, reducing
    risks on loosing them.

  - Make neighbours table flushing more scalable, maintaining per device
    neigh lists.

 Driver API
 ----------

  - Introduce a unified interface to configure transmission H/W shaping,
and expose it to user-space via generic-netlink.

  - Add support for per-NAPI config via netlink. This makes napi
configuration persistent across queues removal and re-creation.
Requires driver updates, currently supported drivers are:
nVidia/Mellanox mlx4 and mlx5, Broadcom brcm and Intel ice.

  - Add ethtool support for writing SFP / PHY firmware blocks.

  - Track RSS context allocation from ethtool core.

  - Implement support for mirroring to DSA CPU port, via TC mirror
    offload.

  - Consolidate FDB updates notification, to avoid duplicates on
    device-specific entries.

  - Expose DPLL clock quality level to the user-space.

  - Support master-slave PHY config via device tree.

 Tests and tooling
 -----------------

  - forwarding: introduce deferred commands, to simplify
    the cleanup phase

1904fb9ebf netlink: terminate outstanding dump on socket close
Netlink supports iterative dumping of data. It provides the families
the following ops:
 - start - (optional) kicks off the dumping process
 - dump - actual dump helper, keeps getting called until it returns 0
 - done - (optional) pairs with .start, can be used for cleanup
The whole process is asynchronous and the repeated calls to .dump
don't actually happen in a tight loop, but rather are triggered
in response to recvmsg() on the socket.

This gives the user full control over the dump, but also means that
the user can close the socket without getting to the end of the dump.
To make sure .start is always paired with .done we check if there
is an ongoing dump before freeing the socket, and if so call .done.

The complication is that sockets can get freed from BH and .done
is allowed to sleep. So we use a workqueue to defer the call, when
needed.

Unfortunately this does not work correctly. What we defer is not
the cleanup but rather releasing a reference on the socket.
We have no guarantee that we own the last reference, if someone
else holds the socket they may release it in BH and we're back
to square one.

The whole dance, however, appears to be unnecessary. Only the user
can interact with dumps, so we can clean up when socket is closed.
And close always happens in process context. Some async code may
still access the socket after close, queue notification skbs to it etc.
but no dumps can start, end or otherwise make progress.

Delete the workqueue and flush the dump state directly from the release
handler. Note that further cleanup is possible in -next, for instance
we now always call .done before releasing the main module reference,
so dump doesn't have to take a reference of its own.

Back in 2007, in commit af65bdfce9 ("[NETLINK]: Switch cb_lock spinlock

subsystems to replace the dump mutex lock with its own lock.

The mechanism was used by rtnetlink to take rtnl_lock but it isn't
sufficiently flexible for other users. Over the 17 years since
it was added no other user appeared. Since rtnetlink needs conditional
locking now, and doesn't use it either, axe this feature complete.

8af4f60472 netlink: support all extack types in dumps
Note that when this commit message refers to netlink dump
it only means the actual dumping part, the parsing / dump
start is handled by the same code as "doit".

Commit 4a19edb60d ("netlink: Pass extack to dump handlers")
added support for returning extack messages from dump handlers,
but left out other extack info, e.g. bad attribute.

This used to be fine because until YNL we had little practical
use for the machine readable attributes, and only messages were
used in practice.

YNL flips the preference 180 degrees, it's now much more useful
to point to a bad attr with NL_SET_BAD_ATTR() than type
an English message saying "attribute XYZ is $reason-why-bad".

Support all of extack. The fact that extack only gets added if
it fits remains unaddressed.

b5a899154a netlink: handle EMSGSIZE errors in the core
Eric points out that our current suggested way of handling
EMSGSIZE errors ((err == -EMSGSIZE) ? skb->len : err) will
break if we didn't fit even a single object into the buffer
provided by the user. This should not happen for well behaved
applications, but we can fix that, and free netlink families
from dealing with that completely by moving error handling
into the core.

Let's assume from now on that all EMSGSIZE errors in dumps are
because we run out of skb space. Families can now propagate
the error nla_put_*() etc generated and not worry about any
return value magic. If some family really wants to send EMSGSIZE
to user space, assuming it generates the same error on the next
dump iteration the skb->len should be 0, and user space should
still see the EMSGSIZE.

This should simplify families and prevent mistakes in return
values which lead to DONE being forced into a separate recv()
call as discovered by Ido some time ago.

f8cbf6bde4 netlink: use kvmalloc() in netlink_alloc_large_skb()
This is a followup of commit 234ec0b603 ("netlink: fix potential

1) If the allocation is smaller than PAGE_SIZE, do not bother

e39951d965 rtnetlink: change nlk->cb_mutex role
In commit af65bdfce9 ("[NETLINK]: Switch cb_lock spinlock

a common mutex to protect both nlk->cb and the dump() operations.

The override is used for rtnl dumps, registered with
rntl_register() and rntl_register_module().

We want to be able to opt-out some dump() operations
to not acquire RTNL, so we need to protect nlk->cb
with a per socket mutex.

661779e1fc netlink: Fix kernel-infoleak-after-free in __skb_datagram_iter
syzbot reported the following uninit-value access issue [1]:

netlink_to_full_skb() creates a new `skb` and puts the `skb->data`
passed as a 1st arg of netlink_to_full_skb() onto new `skb`. The data
size is specified as `len` and passed to skb_put_data(). This `len`
is based on `skb->end` that is not data offset but buffer offset. The
`skb->end` contains data and tailroom. Since the tailroom is not
initialized when the new `skb` created, KMSAN detects uninitialized
memory area when copying the data.

This patch resolved this issue by correct the len from `skb->end` to
`skb->len`, which is the actual data offset.

234ec0b603 netlink: fix potential sleeping issue in mqueue_flush_file
I analyze the potential sleeping issue of the following processes:
Thread A Thread B
... netlink_create //ref = 1
do_mq_notify ...
  sock = netlink_getsockbyfilp          ...     //ref = 2
  info->notify_sock = sock;             ...
... netlink_sendmsg
...                                       skb = netlink_alloc_large_skb  //skb->head is vmalloced
... netlink_unicast
... sk = netlink_getsockbyportid //ref = 3

            netlink_sock_destruct
              skb_queue_purge //get skb from sk_receive_queue
                ...
                __skb_queue_purge_reason
                  kfree_skb_reason
                    __kfree_skb

                      skb_release_head_state
                        netlink_skb_destructor
                          vfree(skb->head)  //sleeping while holding spinlock

In netlink_sendmsg, if the memory pointed to by skb->head is allocated by
vmalloc, and is put to sk_receive_queue queue, also the skb is not freed.
When the mqueue executes flush, the sleeping bug will occur. Use
vfree_atomic instead of vfree in netlink_skb_destructor to solve the issue.
