When an mesh interface is registered, it creates an untagged struct
batadv_meshif_vlan on top of it via the NETDEV_REGISTER notifier. But in
this process, another receiver of this notification can veto the
registration. The netdev registration will be aborted because of this veto.
The register_netdevice() call will try to clean up the net_device using
unregister_netdevice_queue() - which only uses the .priv_destructor to
free private resources. In this situation, .dellink will not be called.
The cleanup of the untagged batadv_meshif_vlan must thefore be done in the
destructor to avoid a leak of this object.

As documented in commit 8bd67ebb50 ("net: bridge: xmit: make sure we have
at least eth header len bytes"), it is possible by for a local user with
eBPF TC hook access to attach a tc filter which truncates the packet and
redirects to an batadv interface. But the code assumes that at least
ETH_HLEN bytes are available and thus might read outside of the available
buffer.
The batadv_interface_tx() must therefore always check itself if enough data
is available for the ethernet header and don't rely on min_header_len.

pskb_may_pull() in batadv_interface_rx() could reallocate the buffer behind
the skb. Variables which were pointing to the old buffer need to be
reassigned to avoid an use-after-free.
This was done correctly for the VLAN header but missed for the ethernet
header which is later used for the TT and AP isolation handling.

Some of the recent fixes required features from new header files. There is
currently no build problem because transitive includes take care of it. But
the batman-adv source code tries to avoid the dependency to
transitive/implicite includes because it has no control over them and they
might get removed at some point.

Bumping the version number on the first pull request after each merge
window was deemed inappropriate for an in-tree component. The version
number carries little meaningful information in the context of the Linux
kernel release model, where stable and distribution might all carry
slightly different patches (without any change to the batman-adv version).
Instead, expose a UTS_RELEASE-based string to consumers of the netlink and
ethtool interfaces. To avoid recompilation for each (re)generate of
generated/utsrelease.h, init_utsname()->release is used in code which can
dynamically retrieve the version string. The MODULE_VERSION is moved to a
separate file because it doesn't support dynamic retrieval of the version
string (but constant "at compile time" string) and it is required for the
/sys/module/batman_adv/version. The latter is unfortunately still required
by userspace tools.

The bla.num_requests is increased when no request_sent was in progress. And
it is decremented in various places (announcement was received, backbone is
purged, periodic work). But the check if the request_sent is actually set
to a specific state and the atomic_dec/_inc are not safe because they are
not atomic (TOCTOU) and multiple such code portions can run concurrently.
At the same time, it is necessary to modify request_sent (state) and
bla.num_requests atomically. Otherwise batadv_bla_send_request() might set
request_sent to 1 and is interrupted. batadv_handle_announce() can then
set request_sent back to 0 and decrement num_requests before
batadv_bla_send_request() incremented it.
The two operations must therefore be locked. And since state (request_sent)
and wait_periods are only accessed inside this lock, they can be converted
to simpler datatypes. And to avoid that the bla.num_requests is touched by
a parallel running context with a valid backbone_gw reference after
batadv_bla_purge_backbone_gw() ran, a third state "stopped" is required to
correctly signal that a backbone_gw is in the state of being cleaned up.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

It is not necessary to include the header for the struct definition for an
"extern " declaration. It can simply be dropped from the headers to reduce
the number of includes the preprocessor has to process. If needed, it can
be added to the actual C source file.

The Network Coding feature, introduced in 2013, is based on the master
thesis "Inter-Flow Network Coding for Wireless Mesh Networks". It relies on
the assumption that neighboring mesh nodes can reliably overhear each
other's transmissions in promiscuous mode, allowing packets to be combined
to reduce forwarding overhead.
This assumption no longer holds for modern wireless mesh networks, which
are heterogeneous and make overhearing increasingly unreliable. Factors
such as multiple spatial streams, varying data rates, beamforming, and
OFDMA all prevent nodes from consistently overhearing each other. The current
implementation in batman-adv is not able to detect these conditions and would
require a more complex layer beyond its neighbor discovery process to do so.
In addition, the feature has been unmaintained for years and is discouraged
for use. None of the current maintainers have the required test
setup to verify its functionality, and known issues remain in its data
structures (reference counting, RCU usage, and cleanup handling). Its
continued presence also blocks necessary refactoring of the core originator
infrastructure.
Remove this obsolete and unmaintained feature.

By passing the hard_iface to netdev_master_upper_dev_link() as private
data, we can iterate over hardifs of a mesh interface more efficiently
using netdev_for_each_lower_private*() (instead of iterating over the
global hardif list). In addition, this will enable resolving a hardif
from its netdev using netdev_lower_dev_get_private() and getting rid of
the global list altogether in the following patches.
A similar approach can be seen in the bonding driver.

The way how the virtual interface is called inside the batman-adv source
code is not consistent. The genl headers call it meshif and the rest of the
code calls is (mostly) softif.
The genl definitions cannot be touched because they are part of the UAPI.
But the rest of the batman-adv code can be touched to have a consistent
name again.
The bulk of the renaming was done using
sed -i -e 's/soft\(-\|\_\| \|\)i\([nf]\)/mesh\1i\2/g' \
-e 's/SOFT\(-\|\_\| \|\)I\([NF]\)/MESH\1I\2/g'
and then it was adjusted slightly when proofreading the changes.
