Scheduler updates for v7.2:
SMP load-balancing updates:
- A large series to introduce infrastructure for cache-aware load
balancing, with the goal of co-locating tasks that share data
within the same Last Level Cache (LLC) domain. By improving cache
locality, the scheduler can reduce cache bouncing and cache misses,
ultimately improving data access efficiency.
Implemented by Chen Yu and Tim Chen, based on early prototype work
by Peter Zijlstra, with fixes by Jianyong Wu, Peter Zijlstra and
Shrikanth Hegde.
- A series to simplify CONFIG_SCHED_SMT ifdef usage (Shrikanth Hegde)

- A series to improve SD_ASYM_CPUCAPACITY scheduling by introducing
SMT awareness (Andrea Righi, K Prateek Nayak)
- A series to optimize cfs_rq and sched_entity allocation for
better data locality (Zecheng Li)
- A preparatory series to change fair/cgroup scheduling to a single
runqueue, without the final change (Peter Zijlstra)
- Auto-manage ext/fair dl_server bandwidth (Andrea Righi)

(K Prateek Nayak)
- Update util_est after updating util_avg during dequeue, to fix
the util signal update logic, which reduces signal noise
(Vincent Guittot)

sched/idle: Handle offlining first in idle loop
Offline handling happens from within the inner idle loop, after the
beginning of dyntick cputime accounting, nohz idle load balancing and
TIF_NEED_RESCHED polling.
This is not necessary and even buggy because:
* There is no dyntick handling to do. And calling tick_nohz_idle_enter()
messes up with the struct tick_sched reset that was performed on
tick_sched_timer_dying().
* There is no nohz idle balancing to do.
* Polling on TIF_RESCHED is irrelevant at this stage, there are no more
tasks allowed to run.
* No need to check if need_resched() before offline handling since
stop_machine is done and all per-cpu kthread should be done with
their job.
Therefore move the offline handling at the beginning of the idle loop.
This will also ease the idle cputime unification later by not elapsing
idle time while offline through the call to:
tick_nohz_idle_enter() -> tick_nohz_start_idle()

sched: Rework prev_balance() to avoid stale prev references
Historically, the prev value from __schedule() was the rq->curr. This prev value is passed down through numerous functions, and used in the class scheduler implementations. The fact that prev was on_cpu until the end of __schedule(), meant it was stable across the rq lock drops that the class->balance() implementations often do. However, with proxy-exec, the prev passed to functions called by __schedule() is rq->donor, which may not be the same as rq->curr and may not be on_cpu, this makes the prev value potentially unstable across rq lock drops. A recently found issue with proxy-exec, is when we begin doing return migration from try_to_wake_up(), its possible we may be waking up the rq->donor. When we do this, we proxy_resched_idle() to put_prev_set_next() setting the rq->donor to rq->idle, allowing the rq->donor to be return migrated and allowed to run. This however runs into trouble, as on another cpu we might be in the middle of calling __schedule(). Conceptually the rq lock is held for the majority of the time, but in calling prev_balance() its possible the class->balance() handler call may briefly drop the rq lock. This opens a window for try_to_wake_up() to wake and return migrate the rq->donor before the class logic reacquires the rq lock. Unfortunately prev_balance() pass in a prev argument, to which we pass rq->donor. However this prev value can now become stale and incorrect across a rq lock drop. So, to correct this, rework the prev_balance() call so that it does not take a "prev" argument. sched: idle: Consolidate the handling of two special cases
There are two special cases in the idle loop that are handled
inconsistently even though they are analogous.
The first one is when a cpuidle driver is absent and the default CPU
idle time power management implemented by the architecture code is used.
In that case, the scheduler tick is stopped every time before invoking
default_idle_call().
The second one is when a cpuidle driver is present, but there is only
one idle state in its table. In that case, the scheduler tick is never
stopped at all.
Since each of these approaches has its drawbacks, reconcile them with
the help of one simple heuristic. Namely, stop the tick if the CPU has
been woken up by it in the previous iteration of the idle loop, or let
it tick otherwise.

sched: Update rq->avg_idle when a task is moved to an idle CPU
Currently, rq->idle_stamp is only used to calculate avg_idle during wakeups. This means other paths that move a task to an idle CPU such as fork/clone, execve, or migrations, do not end the CPU's idle status in the scheduler's eyes, leading to an inaccurate avg_idle. This patch introduces update_rq_avg_idle() to provide a more accurate measurement of CPU idle duration. By invoking this helper in put_prev_task_idle(), we ensure avg_idle is updated whenever a CPU stops being idle, regardless of how the new task arrived. Testing on an 80-core Ampere Altra (ARMv8) with 6.19-rc5 baseline: - Hackbench : +7.2% performance gain at 16 threads. - Schbench: Reduced p99.9 tail latencies at high concurrency. Pull power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"There are quite a few interesting things here, including new hardware
support, new features, some bug fixes and documentation updates. In
addition, there are a usual bunch of minor fixes and cleanups all
over.
In the new hardware support category, there are intel_pstate and
intel_rapl driver updates to support new processors, Panther Lake,
Wildcat Lake, Noval Lake, and Diamond Rapids in the OOB mode, OPP and
bandwidth allocation support in the tegra186 cpufreq driver, and
JH7110S SOC support in dt-platdev cpufreq.
The new features are the PM QoS CPU latency limit for suspend-to-idle,
the netlink support for the energy model management, support for
terminating system suspend via a wakeup event during the sync of file
systems, configurable number of hibernation compression threads, the
runtime PM auto-cleanup macros, and the "poweroff" PM event that is
expected to be used during system shutdown.
Bugs are mostly fixed in cpuidle governors, but there are also fixes
elsewhere, like in the amd-pstate cpufreq driver.
Documentation updates include, but are not limited to, a new doc on
debugging shutdown hangs, cross-referencing fixes and cleanups in the
intel_pstate documentation, and updates of comments in the core
hibernation code.

sched/deadline: Fix dl_server time accounting
The dl_server time accounting code is a little odd. The normal scheduler pattern is to update curr before doing something, such that the old state is fully accounted before changing state. Notably, the dl_server_timer() needs to propagate the current time accounting since the current task could be ran by dl_server and thus this can affect dl_se->runtime. Similarly for dl_server_start(). And since the (deferred) dl_server wants idle time accounted, rework sched_idle_class time accounting to be more like all the others. A rather large update for timekeeping and timers:
- The final step to get rid of auto-rearming posix-timers
posix-timers are currently auto-rearmed by the kernel when the signal
of the timer is ignored so that the timer signal can be delivered once
the corresponding signal is unignored.
This requires to throttle the timer to prevent a DoS by small intervals
and keeps the system pointlessly out of low power states for no value.
This is a long standing non-trivial problem due to the lock order of
posix-timer lock and the sighand lock along with life time issues as
the timer and the sigqueue have different life time rules.
Cure this by:
* Embedding the sigqueue into the timer struct to have the same life
time rules. Aside of that this also avoids the lookup of the timer
in the signal delivery and rearm path as it's just a always valid
container_of() now.
* Queuing ignored timer signals onto a seperate ignored list.
* Moving queued timer signals onto the ignored list when the signal is
switched to SIG_IGN before it could be delivered.
* Walking the ignored list when SIG_IGN is lifted and requeue the
signals to the actual signal lists. This allows the signal delivery
code to rearm the timer.
This also required to consolidate the signal delivery rules so they are
consistent across all situations. With that all self test scenarios
finally succeed.
- Core infrastructure for VFS multigrain timestamping
This is required to allow the kernel to use coarse grained time stamps
by default and switch to fine grained time stamps when inode attributes
are actively observed via getattr().
These changes have been provided to the VFS tree as well, so that the
VFS specific infrastructure could be built on top.
- Cleanup and consolidation of the sleep() infrastructure
* Move all sleep and timeout functions into one file
* Rework udelay() and ndelay() into proper documented inline functions
and replace the hardcoded magic numbers by proper defines.
* Rework the fsleep() implementation to take the reality of the timer
wheel granularity on different HZ values into account. Right now the
boundaries are hard coded time ranges which fail to provide the
requested accuracy on different HZ settings.
* Update documentation for all sleep/timeout related functions and fix
up stale documentation links all over the place
* Fixup a few usage sites
- Rework of timekeeping and adjtimex(2) to prepare for multiple PTP clocks
A system can have multiple PTP clocks which are participating in
seperate and independent PTP clock domains. So far the kernel only
considers the PTP clock which is based on CLOCK TAI relevant as that's
the clock which drives the timekeeping adjustments via the various user
space daemons through adjtimex(2).
The non TAI based clock domains are accessible via the file descriptor
based posix clocks, but their usability is very limited. They can't be
accessed fast as they always go all the way out to the hardware and
they cannot be utilized in the kernel itself.
As Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) gains traction it is required to
provide fast user and kernel space access to these clocks.
The approach taken is to utilize the timekeeping and adjtimex(2)
infrastructure to provide this access in a similar way how the kernel
provides access to clock MONOTONIC, REALTIME etc.
Instead of creating a duplicated infrastructure this rework converts
timekeeping and adjtimex(2) into generic functionality which operates
on pointers to data structures instead of using static variables.
This allows to provide time accessors and adjtimex(2) functionality for
the independent PTP clocks in a subsequent step.
- Consolidate hrtimer initialization
hrtimers are set up by initializing the data structure and then
seperately setting the callback function for historical reasons.
That's an extra unnecessary step and makes Rust support less straight
forward than it should be.
Provide a new set of hrtimer_setup*() functions and convert the core
code and a few usage sites of the less frequently used interfaces over.
The bulk of the htimer_init() to hrtimer_setup() conversion is already
prepared and scheduled for the next merge window.
- Drivers:
* Ensure that the global timekeeping clocksource is utilizing the
cluster 0 timer on MIPS multi-cluster systems.
Otherwise CPUs on different clusters use their cluster specific
clocksource which is not guaranteed to be synchronized with other
clusters.
* Mostly boring cleanups, fixes, improvements and code movement

sched: Rework pick_next_task()
The current rule is that: pick_next_task() := pick_task() + set_next_task(.first = true) And many classes implement it directly as such. Change things around to make pick_next_task() optional while also changing the definition to: pick_next_task(prev) := pick_task() + put_prev_task() + set_next_task(.first = true) The reason is that sched_ext would like to have a 'final' call that knows the next task. By placing put_prev_task() right next to set_next_task() (as it already is for sched_core) this becomes trivial. As a bonus, this is a nice cleanup on its own. Among the motivations for the DL servers is the real-time throttling mechanism. This mechanism works by throttling the rt_rq after running for a long period without leaving space for fair tasks. The base dl server avoids this problem by boosting fair tasks instead of throttling the rt_rq. The point is that it boosts without waiting for potential starvation, causing some non-intuitive cases. For example, an IRQ dispatches two tasks on an idle system, a fair and an RT. The DL server will be activated, running the fair task before the RT one. This problem can be avoided by deferring the dl server activation. By setting the defer option, the dl_server will dispatch an SCHED_DEADLINE reservation with replenished runtime, but throttled. The dl_timer will be set for the defer time at (period - runtime) ns from start time. Thus boosting the fair rq at defer time. If the fair scheduler has the opportunity to run while waiting for defer time, the dl server runtime will be consumed. If the runtime is completely consumed before the defer time, the server will be replenished while still in a throttled state. Then, the dl_timer will be reset to the new defer time If the fair server reaches the defer time without consuming its runtime, the server will start running, following CBS rules (thus without breaking SCHED_DEADLINE). Then the server will continue the running state (without deferring) until it fair tasks are able to execute as regular fair scheduler (end of the starvation). Core x86 changes for v6.9:
- The biggest change is the rework of the percpu code,
to support the 'Named Address Spaces' GCC feature,
by Uros Bizjak:
- This allows C code to access GS and FS segment relative
memory via variables declared with such attributes,
which allows the compiler to better optimize those accesses
than the previous inline assembly code.
- The series also includes a number of micro-optimizations
for various percpu access methods, plus a number of
cleanups of %gs accesses in assembly code.
- These changes have been exposed to linux-next testing for
the last ~5 months, with no known regressions in this area.
- Fix/clean up __switch_to()'s broken but accidentally
working handling of FPU switching - which also generates
better code.
- Propagate more RIP-relative addressing in assembly code,
to generate slightly better code.
- Rework the CPU mitigations Kconfig space to be less idiosyncratic,
to make it easier for distros to follow & maintain these options.
- Rework the x86 idle code to cure RCU violations and
to clean up the logic.
- Clean up the vDSO Makefile logic.
- Misc cleanups and fixes.
[ Please note that there's a higher number of merge commits in
this branch (three) than is usual in x86 topic trees. This happened
due to the long testing lifecycle of the percpu changes that
involved 3 merge windows, which generated a longer history
and various interactions with other core x86 changes that we
felt better about to carry in a single branch. ]

sched/idle: Conditionally handle tick broadcast in default_idle_call()
The x86 architecture has an idle routine for AMD CPUs which are affected by erratum 400. On the affected CPUs the local APIC timer stops in the C1E halt state. It therefore requires tick broadcasting. The invocation of tick_broadcast_enter()/exit() from this function violates the RCU constraints because it can end up in lockdep or tracing, which rightfully triggers a warning. tick_broadcast_enter()/exit() must be invoked before ct_cpuidle_enter() and after ct_cpuidle_exit() in default_idle_call(). Add a static branch conditional invocation of tick_broadcast_enter()/exit() into this function to allow X86 to replace the AMD specific idle code. It's guarded by a config switch which will be selected by x86. Otherwise it's a NOOP. tick: Assume timekeeping is correctly handed over upon last offline idle call
The timekeeping duty is handed over from the outgoing CPU on stop machine, then the oneshot tick is stopped right after. Therefore it's guaranteed that the current CPU isn't the timekeeper upon its last call to idle. Besides, calling tick_nohz_idle_stop_tick() while the dying CPU goes into idle suggests that the tick is going to be stopped while it is actually stopped already from the appropriate CPU hotplug state. Remove the confusing call and the obsolete case handling and convert it to a sanity check that verifies the above assumption. kernel/sched: Modify initial boot task idle setup
Initial booting is setting the task flag to idle (PF_IDLE) by the call path sched_init() -> init_idle(). Having the task idle and calling call_rcu() in kernel/rcu/tiny.c means that TIF_NEED_RESCHED will be set. Subsequent calls to any cond_resched() will enable IRQs, potentially earlier than the IRQ setup has completed. Recent changes have caused just this scenario and IRQs have been enabled early. This causes a warning later in start_kernel() as interrupts are enabled before they are fully set up. Fix this issue by setting the PF_IDLE flag later in the boot sequence. Although the boot task was marked as idle since (at least) d80e4fda576d, I am not sure that it is wrong to do so. The forced context-switch on idle task was introduced in the tiny_rcu update, so I'm going to claim this fixes |

sched/idle: Mark arch_cpu_idle_dead() __noreturn
Before commit 076cbf5d2163 ("x86/xen: don't let xen_pv_play_dead()
return"), in Xen, when a previously offlined CPU was brought back
online, it unexpectedly resumed execution where it left off in the
middle of the idle loop.
There were some hacks to make that work, but the behavior was surprising
as do_idle() doesn't expect an offlined CPU to return from the dead (in
arch_cpu_idle_dead()).
Now that Xen has been fixed, and the arch-specific implementations of
arch_cpu_idle_dead() also don't return, give it a __noreturn attribute.
This will cause the compiler to complain if an arch-specific
implementation might return. It also improves code generation for both
caller and callee.
Also fixes the following warning:
vmlinux.o: warning: objtool: do_idle+0x25f: unreachable instruction

arch/idle: Change arch_cpu_idle() behavior: always exit with IRQs disabled
Current arch_cpu_idle() is called with IRQs disabled, but will return with IRQs enabled. However, the very first thing the generic code does after calling arch_cpu_idle() is raw_local_irq_disable(). This means that architectures that can idle with IRQs disabled end up doing a pointless 'enable-disable' dance. Therefore, push this IRQ disabling into the idle function, meaning that those architectures can avoid the pointless IRQ state flipping.
