On a local directory mutation (rename/create/unlink) the client marks
CHANGE / MTIME / CTIME as invalid in NFS_I(dir)->cache_validity. When
a subsequent stat(2) enters __nfs_revalidate_inode() and finds a
directory delegation held, the function currently early-exits and
returns the cached (now stale) mtime to userspace without sending a
GETATTR RPC.
Keep the early-exit for the fast path, but take the RPC when CHANGE,
MTIME, or CTIME are already marked invalid. The delegation alone is
not a guarantee of cached-attr freshness once the code itself has
flagged the cache as stale.

Pull vfs casefolding updates from Christian Brauner:
"This exposes the case folding behavior of local filesystems so that
file servers - nfsd, ksmbd, and user space file servers - can report
the actual behavior to clients instead of guessing.
Filesystems report case-insensitive and case-nonpreserving behavior
via new file_kattr flags in their fileattr_get implementations. fat,
exfat, ntfs3, hfs, hfsplus, xfs, cifs, nfs, vboxsf, and isofs are
wired up. Local filesystems that are not explicitly handled default to
the usual POSIX behavior of case-sensitive and case-preserving.
nfsd uses this to report case folding via NFSv3 PATHCONF and to
implement the NFSv4 FATTR4_CASE_INSENSITIVE and FATTR4_CASE_PRESERVING
attributes - both have been part of the NFS protocols for decades to
support clients on non-POSIX systems - and ksmbd reports it via
FS_ATTRIBUTE_INFORMATION. Exposing the information through the
fileattr uapi covers user space file servers.
The immediate motivation is interoperability: Windows NFS clients
hard-require servers to report case-insensitivity for Win32
applications to work correctly, and a client that knows the server is
case-insensitive can avoid issuing multiple LOOKUP/READDIR requests
searching for case variants.
The Linux NFS client already grew support for case-insensitive shares
years ago in support of the Hammerspace NFS server - negative dentry
caching must be disabled (a lookup for "FILE.TXT" failing must not
cache a negative entry when "file.txt" exists) and directory change
invalidation must drop cached case-folded name variants. Such servers
often operate in multi-protocol environments where a single file
service instance caters to both NFS and SMB clients, and nfsd needs to
report case folding properly to participate as a first-class citizen
there.
A follow-up series brings fixes for the initial work: the nfsd
case-info probe now uses kernel credentials, maps -ESTALE to
NFS3ERR_STALE, and has its cost capped across READDIR entries; the nfs
client avoids transiently zeroed case capability bits during the probe
and skips the pathconf probe when neither field is consumed; the
FS_CASEFOLD_FL semantics are clarified in the UAPI header; and the
tools UAPI headers are synced"

64-bit fileids into the old unsigned long i_ino.
Keep the enable_ino64 module parameter as a deprecated stub that

An NFS server re-exporting an NFS mount point needs to report
the case sensitivity behavior of the underlying filesystem to
its clients. NFSD's attribute encoder obtains that information
by calling vfs_fileattr_get() on the lower filesystem, so the
NFS client must implement fileattr_get to surface what it
learned from its own server.
The NFS client already retrieves case sensitivity information
from servers during mount via PATHCONF (NFSv3) or the
FATTR4_CASE_INSENSITIVE/FATTR4_CASE_PRESERVING attributes
(NFSv4). Expose this information through fileattr_get by
reporting the FS_XFLAG_CASEFOLD and FS_XFLAG_CASENONPRESERVING
flags. NFSv2 lacks PATHCONF support, so mounts using that protocol
version default to standard POSIX behavior: case-sensitive and
case-preserving.
PATHCONF is now invoked unconditionally for NFSv2 and NFSv3 mounts
so the case-sensitivity capabilities are established even when the
user pins server->namelen with the namlen= mount option. That option
is orthogonal to case handling, and skipping PATHCONF because
namelen was already known would leave the caps unset.
The two capability bits carry opposite polarity because their POSIX
defaults differ. Most servers are case-sensitive and case-
preserving, matching "neither xflag set." NFS_CAP_CASE_INSENSITIVE
is set only when the server affirms case insensitivity, so "server
said no" and "server did not answer" both collapse to the case-
sensitive default. NFS_CAP_CASE_NONPRESERVING follows the same
pattern in the opposite direction: set only when the server affirms
that it does not preserve case, so that silence or a missing
attribute lands on the case-preserving default. The NFSv4 probe
checks res.attr_bitmask[0] to distinguish "server said false" from
"server omitted the attribute" before setting the bit.
Both capability bits are cleared before each probe so a remount,
an NFSv4 transparent state migration to a server with different
case semantics, or a probe whose reply does not arrive does not
retain stale capabilities from the prior probe.

xfstest generic/221 is failing with delegated timestamps enabled. When
the client holds a WRITE_ATTRS_DELEG delegation, and a userland process
does a utimensat() for only the atime, the ctime is not properly
updated. The problem is that the client tries to cache the atime update,
but there is no mtime update, so the delegated attribute update never
updates the ctime.
Delegated timestamps don't have a mechanism to update the ctime in
accordance with atime-only changes due to utimensat() and the like.
Change the client to issue an RPC in this case, so that the ctime gets

On 32-bit architectures, unsigned long is only 32 bits wide, which
causes 64-bit inode numbers to be silently truncated. Several
filesystems (NFS, XFS, BTRFS, etc.) can generate inode numbers that
exceed 32 bits, and this truncation can lead to inode number collisions
and other subtle bugs on 32-bit systems.
Change the type of inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64 to ensure that
inode numbers are always represented as 64-bit values regardless of
architecture. Update all format specifiers treewide from %lu/%lx to
%llu/%llx to match the new type, along with corresponding local variable
types.
This is the bulk treewide conversion. Earlier patches in this series
handled trace events separately to allow trace field reordering for
better struct packing on 32-bit.

xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL

Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly

non-blocking direct writes impossible on file systems with granular
enough timestamps, which in practice means all of them.
This reworks the timestamp update path to propagate IOCB_NOWAIT
through ->update_time so that file systems which can update timestamps
without blocking are no longer penalized.
With that groundwork in place, the core change passes IOCB_NOWAIT into
->update_time and returns -EAGAIN only when the file system indicates
it would block.

Pass the type of update (atime vs c/mtime plus version) as an enum
instead of a set of flags that caused all kinds of confusion.
Because inode_update_timestamps now can't return a modified version
of those flags, return the I_DIRTY_* flags needed to persist the
update, which is what the main caller in generic_update_time wants
anyway, and which is suitable for the other callers that only want
to know if an update happened.
The whole update_time path keeps the flags argument, which will be used
to support non-blocking updates soon even if it is unused, and (the
slightly renamed) inode_update_time also gains the possibility to return
a negative errno to support this.

The utimes01 and utime06 tests fail when delegated timestamps are
enabled, specifically in subtests that modify the atime and mtime
fields using the 'nobody' user ID.
The problem can be reproduced as follow:
# echo "/media *(rw,no_root_squash,sync)" >> /etc/exports
# export -ra
# mount -o rw,nfsvers=4.2 127.0.0.1:/media /tmpdir
# cd /opt/ltp
# ./runltp -d /tmpdir -s utimes01
# ./runltp -d /tmpdir -s utime06
This issue occurs because nfs_setattr does not verify the inode's
UID against the caller's fsuid when delegated timestamps are
permitted for the inode.
This patch adds the UID check and if it does not match then the
request is sent to the server for permission checking.

NFS doesn't have DIO alignment constraints, so have NFS respond with
accommodating DIO alignment attributes (rather than plumb in GETATTR
support for STATX_DIOALIGN and STATX_DIO_READ_ALIGN).
The most coarse-grained dio_offset_align is the most accommodating
(e.g. PAGE_SIZE, in future larger may be supported).
Now that NFS has support, NFS reexport will now handle unaligned DIO
(NFSD's NFSD_IO_DIRECT support requires the underlying filesystem
support STATX_DIOALIGN and/or STATX_DIO_READ_ALIGN).

Pull vfs inode updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains a series I originally wrote and that Eric brought over
the finish line. It moves out the i_crypt_info and i_verity_info
pointers out of 'struct inode' and into the fs-specific part of the
inode.
So now the few filesytems that actually make use of this pay the price
in their own private inode storage instead of forcing it upon every
user of struct inode.
The pointer for the crypt and verity info is simply found by storing
an offset to its address in struct fsverity_operations and struct
fscrypt_operations. This shrinks struct inode by 16 bytes.
I hope to move a lot more out of it in the future so that struct inode
becomes really just about very core stuff that we need, much like
struct dentry and struct file, instead of the dumping ground it has
become over the years.
On top of this are a various changes associated with the ongoing inode
lifetime handling rework that multiple people are pushing forward:
- Stop accessing inode->i_count directly in f2fs and gfs2. They
simply should use the __iget() and iput() helpers
- Make the i_state flags an enum
- Rework the iput() logic
Currently, if we are the last iput, and we have the I_DIRTY_TIME
bit set, we will grab a reference on the inode again and then mark
it dirty and then redo the put. This is to make sure we delay the
time update for as long as possible
We can rework this logic to simply dec i_count if it is not 1, and
if it is do the time update while still holding the i_count
reference
Then we can replace the atomic_dec_and_lock with locking the
->i_lock and doing atomic_dec_and_test, since we did the
atomic_add_unless above
- Add an icount_read() helper and convert everyone that accesses
inode->i_count directly for this purpose to use the helper
- Expand dump_inode() to dump more information about an inode helping
in debugging
- Add some might_sleep() annotations to iput() and associated

"This contains the usual selections of misc updates for this cycle.
Features:
- Add "initramfs_options" parameter to set initramfs mount options.
This allows to add specific mount options to the rootfs to e.g.,
limit the memory size
- Add RWF_NOSIGNAL flag for pwritev2()
Add RWF_NOSIGNAL flag for pwritev2. This flag prevents the SIGPIPE
signal from being raised when writing on disconnected pipes or
sockets. The flag is handled directly by the pipe filesystem and
converted to the existing MSG_NOSIGNAL flag for sockets
- Allow to pass pid namespace as procfs mount option
Ever since the introduction of pid namespaces, procfs has had very
implicit behaviour surrounding them (the pidns used by a procfs
mount is auto-selected based on the mounting process's active
pidns, and the pidns itself is basically hidden once the mount has
been constructed)
This implicit behaviour has historically meant that userspace was
required to do some special dances in order to configure the pidns
of a procfs mount as desired. Examples include:
* In order to bypass the mnt_too_revealing() check, Kubernetes
creates a procfs mount from an empty pidns so that user
namespaced containers can be nested (without this, the nested
containers would fail to mount procfs)
But this requires forking off a helper process because you cannot
just one-shot this using mount(2)
* Container runtimes in general need to fork into a container
before configuring its mounts, which can lead to security issues
in the case of shared-pidns containers (a privileged process in
the pidns can interact with your container runtime process)
While SUID_DUMP_DISABLE and user namespaces make this less of an
issue, the strict need for this due to a minor uAPI wart is kind
of unfortunate
Things would be much easier if there was a way for userspace to
just specify the pidns they want. So this pull request contains
changes to implement a new "pidns" argument which can be set
using fsconfig(2):
fsconfig(procfd, FSCONFIG_SET_FD, "pidns", NULL, nsfd);
fsconfig(procfd, FSCONFIG_SET_STRING, "pidns", "/proc/self/ns/pid", 0);
or classic mount(2) / mount(8):
// mount -t proc -o pidns=/proc/self/ns/pid proc /tmp/proc
mount("proc", "/tmp/proc", "proc", MS_..., "pidns=/proc/self/ns/pid");

fattr4_numlinks is a recommended attribute, so the client should emulate
it even if the server doesn't support it. In decode_attr_nlink function
in nfs4xdr.c, nlink is initialized to 1. However, this default value
isn't set to the inode due to the check in nfs_fhget.
So if the server doesn't support numlinks, inode's nlink will be zero,
the mount will fail with error "Stale file handle". Set the nlink to 1

nfs_setattr will flush all pending writes before updating a file time
attributes. However when the client holds delegated timestamps, it can
update its timestamps locally as it is the authority for the file
times attributes. The client will later set the file attributes by
adding a setattr to the delegreturn compound updating the server time
attributes.
Fix nfs_setattr to avoid flushing pending writes when the file time
attributes are delegated and the mtime/atime are set to a fixed
timestamp (ATTR_[MODIFY|ACCESS]_SET. Also, when sending the setattr
procedure over the wire, we need to clear the correct attribute bits
from the bitmask.

terms of GC'd nfsd_files) back to caching nfsd_files in the
client. A later commit will add the callback mechanism needed to
allow NFSD to force the NFS client to cleanup all cached nfsd_files.
Add nfs_fh_localio_init() and 'struct nfs_fh_localio' to cache opened
nfsd_file(s) (both a RO and RW nfsd_file is able to be opened and
cached for a given nfs_fh).
Update nfs_local_open_fh() to cache the nfsd_file once it is opened
using __nfs_local_open_fh().
Introduce nfs_close_local_fh() to clear the cached open nfsd_files and
call nfs_to_nfsd_file_put_local().
Refcounting is such that:

- __nfs_local_open_fh() is paired with nfs_to_nfsd_file_put_local().

spinlock and double-check these inode flags.
Also refactor nfs_set_cache_invalid() slightly to use
smp_store_release() to pair with nfs_clear_invalid_mapping()'s
smp_load_acquire().
While this fix is beneficial for all multi-threaded buffered reads
issued by an NFS client, this issue was identified in the context of
surprisingly low LOCALIO performance with 4K multi-threaded buffered
read IO. This fix dramatically speeds up LOCALIO performance:
before: read: IOPS=1583k, BW=6182MiB/s (6482MB/s)(121GiB/20002msec)
after: read: IOPS=3046k, BW=11.6GiB/s (12.5GB/s)(232GiB/20001msec)

For localio access, don't call filesystem read() and write() routines
directly. This solves two problems:
1) localio writes need to use a normal (non-memreclaim) unbound
workqueue. This avoids imposing new requirements on how underlying
filesystems process frontend IO, which would cause a large amount
of work to update all filesystems. Without this change, when XFS
starts getting low on space, XFS flushes work on a non-memreclaim
work queue, which causes a priority inversion problem:

2) Some filesystem writeback routines can end up taking up a lot of
stack space (particularly XFS). Instead of risking running over
due to the extra overhead from the NFS stack, we should just call
these routines from a workqueue job. Since we need to do this to
address 1) above we're able to avoid possibly blowing the stack
"for free".
Use of dedicated workqueues improves performance over using the
system_unbound_wq.
Also, the creds used to open the file are used to override_creds() in
both nfs_local_call_read() and nfs_local_call_write() -- otherwise the
workqueue could have elevated capabilities (which the caller may not).
Lastly, care is taken to set PF_LOCAL_THROTTLE | PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO in
nfs_do_local_write() to avoid writeback deadlocks.
The PF_LOCAL_THROTTLE flag prevents deadlocks in balance_dirty_pages()
by causing writes to only be throttled against other writes to the
same bdi (it keeps the throttling local). Normally all writes to
bdi(s) are throttled equally (after throughput factors are allowed
for).
The PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO flag prevents the lower filesystem IO from
causing memory reclaim to re-enter filesystems or IO devices and so
prevents deadlocks from occuring where IO that cleans pages is
waiting on IO to complete.
