The PATHCONF RPC issued from nfs_probe_fsinfo() supplies two pieces of
information: max_namelen, used only when server->namelen has not been
pinned by mount options, and the case_insensitive / case_preserving
fields, used only by the NFSv2/NFSv3 path. NFSv4 receives its case
sensitivity caps from the FATTR4_CASE_* attributes during the
set_capabilities probe, and a non-zero server->namelen short-circuits
the only other field of interest.
When both conditions hold (NFSv4 with namelen pinned), the pathconf
reply is discarded in full but the round-trip is still on the mount
critical path. Gate the call on version < 4 || namelen == 0 so that
mounts which cannot benefit from the reply do not pay for it.

nfs_probe_fsinfo() clears NFS_CAP_CASE_INSENSITIVE and
NFS_CAP_CASE_NONPRESERVING ahead of the synchronous pathconf RPC and
sets them again only after the reply arrives. The code path is gated
by clp->rpc_ops->version < 4 and is therefore reached on NFSv2/v3
remount via nfs_reconfigure(), which calls nfs_probe_server() against
a live mount. Concurrent readers walking server->caps can observe the
cleared state for the duration of the round-trip and report the wrong
case-sensitivity attributes.
Compute the post-probe capability mask on the stack and assign it to
server->caps in a single store so readers see either the stale value
or the freshly computed one, never an intermediate zero. Preserve the
original behaviour of dropping the bits when the pathconf RPC itself
fails.
The analogous transient zero on the NFSv4 path lives in
nfs4_server_capabilities() and is left for a separate fix.

An NFS server re-exporting an NFS mount point needs to report
the case sensitivity behavior of the underlying filesystem to
its clients. NFSD's attribute encoder obtains that information
by calling vfs_fileattr_get() on the lower filesystem, so the
NFS client must implement fileattr_get to surface what it
learned from its own server.
The NFS client already retrieves case sensitivity information
from servers during mount via PATHCONF (NFSv3) or the
FATTR4_CASE_INSENSITIVE/FATTR4_CASE_PRESERVING attributes
(NFSv4). Expose this information through fileattr_get by
reporting the FS_XFLAG_CASEFOLD and FS_XFLAG_CASENONPRESERVING
flags. NFSv2 lacks PATHCONF support, so mounts using that protocol
version default to standard POSIX behavior: case-sensitive and
case-preserving.
PATHCONF is now invoked unconditionally for NFSv2 and NFSv3 mounts
so the case-sensitivity capabilities are established even when the
user pins server->namelen with the namlen= mount option. That option
is orthogonal to case handling, and skipping PATHCONF because
namelen was already known would leave the caps unset.
The two capability bits carry opposite polarity because their POSIX
defaults differ. Most servers are case-sensitive and case-
preserving, matching "neither xflag set." NFS_CAP_CASE_INSENSITIVE
is set only when the server affirms case insensitivity, so "server
said no" and "server did not answer" both collapse to the case-
sensitive default. NFS_CAP_CASE_NONPRESERVING follows the same
pattern in the opposite direction: set only when the server affirms
that it does not preserve case, so that silence or a missing
attribute lands on the case-preserving default. The NFSv4 probe
checks res.attr_bitmask[0] to distinguish "server said false" from
"server omitted the attribute" before setting the bit.
Both capability bits are cleared before each probe so a remount,
an NFSv4 transparent state migration to a server with different
case semantics, or a probe whose reply does not arrive does not
retain stale capabilities from the prior probe.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

Rework this code that was totally busted at least as of my most
recent changes. Introduce a separate list for delayed delegations
so that they can't get lost and don't clutter up the returns list.

Compiling the NFSv4 module without any minorversion support doesn't make
much sense, so this patch sets NFS v4.1 as the default, always enabled
NFS version allowing us to replace all the CONFIG_NFS_V4_1s scattered
throughout the code with CONFIG_NFS_V4.

Directly returning delegations on close when over the watermark is
rather suboptimal as these delegations are much more likely to be reused
than those that have been unused for a long time. Switch to returning
unused delegations from a new LRU list when we are above the threshold and
there are reclaimable delegations instead.
Pass over referenced delegations during the first pass to give delegations
that aren't in active used by frequently used for stat() or similar another
chance to not be instantly reclaimed. This scheme works the same as the
referenced flags in the VFS inode and dentry caches.

Searching for returnable delegations in the per-server delegations list
can be very expensive. While commit e04bbf6b1b ("NFS: Avoid quadratic
search when freeing delegations.") reduced the overhead a bit, the
fact that all the non-returnable delegations have to be searched limits
the amount of optimizations that can be done.
Fix this by introducing a separate list that only contains delegations
scheduled for return.

It was reported that NFS client mounts of AWS Elastic File System
(EFS) volumes is slow, this is because the AWS firewall disallows
LOCALIO (because it doesn't consider the use of NFS_LOCALIO_PROGRAM
valid), see: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2335129
Switch to performing the LOCALIO probe asynchronously to address the
potential for the NFS LOCALIO protocol being disallowed and/or slowed
by the remote server's response.
While at it, fix nfs_local_probe_async() to always take/put a
reference on the nfs_client that is using the LOCALIO protocol.
Also, unexport the nfs_local_probe() symbol and make it private to
fs/nfs/localio.c
This change has the side-effect of initially issuing reads, writes and
commits over the wire via SUNRPC until the LOCALIO probe completes.

The Linux client assumes that all filehandles are non-volatile for
renames within the same directory (otherwise sillyrename cannot work).
However, the existence of the Linux 'subtree_check' export option has
meant that nfs_rename() has always assumed it needs to flush writes
before attempting to rename.
Since NFSv4 does allow the client to query whether or not the server
exhibits this behaviour, and since knfsd does actually set the
appropriate flag when 'subtree_check' is enabled on an export, it
should be OK to optimise away the write flushing behaviour in the cases
where it is clearly not needed.

Propagate the NFS_MOUNT_NETUNREACH_FATAL flag to work with the generic
NFS client. If the flag is set, the client will receive ENETDOWN and
ENETUNREACH errors from the RPC layer, and is expected to treat them as
being fatal.

Remove nfs_local_enable and nfs_local_disable, instead use
nfs_localio_enable_client and nfs_localio_disable_client.
Discontinue use of the NFS_CS_LOCAL_IO bit in the nfs_client struct's
cl_flags to reflect that LOCALIO is enabled; instead just test if the
net member of the nfs_uuid_t struct is set.
Also remove NFS_CS_LOCAL_IO.
Lastly, remove trace_nfs_local_enable and trace_nfs_local_disable
because comparable traces are available from nfs_localio.ko.

Remove cl_localio_lock from 'struct nfs_client' in favor of adding a
lock to the nfs_uuid_t struct (which is embedded in each nfs_client).
Push nfs_local_{enable,disable} implementation down to nfs_common.
Those methods now call nfs_localio_{enable,disable}_client.
This allows implementing nfs_localio_invalidate_clients in terms of
nfs_localio_disable_client.

This patch replaces the nfs_version_mutex and nfs_version_lock with a
single RW lock that protects access to the nfs_versions list.
The mutex around request_module() seemed unnecessary to me, and I
couldn't find any other callers using a lock around calls to
request_module() when I looked.
At the same time, I saw fs/filesystems.c using a RW lock to protect
their filesystems list. This seems like a better idea than a spinlock to
me, so I'm also making that change while I'm here.

Add nfs_uuid_init() to properly initialize all nfs_uuid_t members
(particularly its list_head).
Switch to returning bool from nfs_uuid_begin(), returns false if
nfs_uuid_t is already in-use (its list_head is on a list). Update
nfs_local_probe() to return early if the nfs_client's cl_uuid
(nfs_uuid_t) is in-use.
Also, switch nfs_uuid_begin() from using list_add_tail_rcu() to
list_add_tail() -- rculist was used in an earlier version of the
localio code that had a lockless nfs_uuid_lookup interface.

The LOCALIO auxiliary RPC protocol consists of a single "UUID_IS_LOCAL"
RPC method that allows the Linux NFS client to verify the local Linux
NFS server can see the nonce (single-use UUID) the client generated and
made available in nfs_common for subsequent lookup and verification
by the NFS server. If matched, the NFS server populates members in the
nfs_uuid_t struct. The NFS client then transfers these nfs_uuid_t
struct member pointers to the nfs_client struct and cleans up the
nfs_uuid_t struct. See: fs/nfs/localio.c:nfs_local_probe()
This protocol isn't part of an IETF standard, nor does it need to be
considering it is Linux-to-Linux auxiliary RPC protocol that amounts
to an implementation detail.
Localio is only supported when UNIX-style authentication (AUTH_UNIX, aka
AUTH_SYS) is used (enforced by fs/nfs/localio.c:nfs_local_probe()).
The UUID_IS_LOCAL method encodes the client generated uuid_t in terms of
the fixed UUID_SIZE (16 bytes). The fixed size opaque encode and decode
XDR methods are used instead of the less efficient variable sized
methods.
Having a nonce (single-use uuid) is better than using the same uuid
for the life of the server, and sending it proactively by client
rather than reactively by the server is also safer.

Add client support for bypassing NFS for localhost reads, writes, and
commits. This is only useful when the client and the server are
running on the same host.
nfs_local_probe() is stubbed out, later commits will enable client and
server handshake via a Linux-only LOCALIO auxiliary RPC protocol.
This has dynamic binding with the nfsd module (via nfs_localio module
which is part of nfs_common). LOCALIO will only work if nfsd is
already loaded.
The "localio_enabled" nfs kernel module parameter can be used to
disable and enable the ability to use LOCALIO support.
CONFIG_NFS_LOCALIO enables NFS client support for LOCALIO.
Lastly, LOCALIO uses an nfsd_file to initiate all IO. To make proper
use of nfsd_file (and nfsd's filecache) its lifetime (duration before
nfsd_file_put is called) must extend until after commit, read and
write operations. So rather than immediately drop the nfsd_file
reference in nfs_local_open_fh(), that doesn't happen until
nfs_local_pgio_release() for read/write and not until
nfs_local_release_commit_data() for commit. The same applies to the
reference held on nfsd's nn->nfsd_serv. Both objects' lifetimes and
associated references are managed through calls to
nfs_to->nfsd_file_put_local().

I have evidence of an Linux NFS client getting NFS4ERR_BAD_SEQID to a
v4.0 LOCK request to a Linux server (which had fixed the problem with
RELEASE_LOCKOWNER bug fixed).
The LOCK request presented a "new" lock owner so there are two seq ids
in the request: that for the open file, and that for the new lock.
Given the context I am confident that the new lock owner was reported to
have the wrong seqid. As lock owner identifiers are reused, the server
must still have a lock owner active which the client thinks is no longer
active.
I wasn't able to determine a root-cause but the simplest fix seems to be
to ensure lock owners are always unique much as open owners are (thanks
to a time stamp). The easiest way to ensure uniqueness is with a 64bit
counter for each server. That will never cycle (if updated once a
nanosecond the last 584 years. A single NFS server would not handle
open/lock requests nearly that fast, and a Linux node is unlikely to
have an uptime approaching that).
This patch removes the 2 ida and instead uses a per-server
atomic64_t to provide uniqueness.
Note that the lock owner already encodes the id as 64 bits even though
it is a 32bit value. So changing to a 64bit value does not change the
encoding of the lock owner. The open owner encoding is now 4 bytes
larger.

Commit 6df25e5853 ("nfs: remove reliance on bdi congestion")
introduced NFS-private solution for limiting number of writes
outstanding against a particular server. Unlike previous bdi congestion
this algorithm actually works and limits number of outstanding writeback
pages to nfs_congestion_kb which scales with amount of client's memory
and is capped at 256 MB. As a result some workloads such as random
buffered writes over NFS got slower (from ~170 MB/s to ~126 MB/s). The
fio command to reproduce is:
fio --direct=0 --ioengine=sync --thread --invalidate=1 --group_reporting=1
--runtime=300 --fallocate=posix --ramp_time=10 --new_group --rw=randwrite
--size=64256m --numjobs=4 --bs=4k --fsync_on_close=1 --end_fsync=1
This happens because the client sends ~256 MB worth of dirty pages to
the server and any further background writeback request is ignored until
the number of writeback pages gets below the threshold of 192 MB. By the
time this happens and clients decides to trigger another round of
writeback, the server often has no pages to write and the disk is idle.
To fix this problem and make the client react faster to eased congestion
of the server by blocking waiting for congestion to resolve instead of
aborting writeback. This improves the random 4k buffered write
throughput to 184 MB/s.

NFS ->d_revalidate(), ->permission() and ->get_link() need to access
some parts of nfs_server when called in RCU mode:
server->flags
server->caps
*(server->io_stats)
and, worst of all, call
server->nfs_client->rpc_ops->have_delegation
(the last one - as NFS_PROTO(inode)->have_delegation()). We really
don't want to RCU-delay the entire nfs_free_server() (it would have
to be done with schedule_work() from RCU callback, since it can't
be made to run from interrupt context), but actual freeing of
nfs_server and ->io_stats can be done via call_rcu() just fine.
nfs_client part is handled simply by making nfs_free_client() use
kfree_rcu().

Its possible to end up in nfs_free_server() before the server's superblock
sysfs entry has been initialized, in which case calling kobject_put() will
emit a WARNING. Check if the kobject has been initialized before cleaning
it up.

Create a sysfs directory for each mount that corresponds to the mount's
nfs_server struct. As the mount is being constructed, use the name
"server-n", but rename it to the "MAJOR:MINOR" of the mount after assigning
a device_id. The rename approach allows us to populate the mount's directory
with links to the various rpc_client objects during the mount's
construction. The naming convention (MAJOR:MINOR) can be used to reference
a particular NFS mount's sysfs tree.

After some discussion, we decided that controlling transport layer
security policy should be separate from the setting for the user
authentication flavor. To accomplish this, add a new NFS mount
option to select a transport layer security policy for RPC
operations associated with the mount point.
xprtsec=none - Transport layer security is forced off.
xprtsec=tls - Establish an encryption-only TLS session. If
the initial handshake fails, the mount fails.
If TLS is not available on a reconnect, drop
the connection and try again.
xprtsec=mtls - Both sides authenticate and an encrypted
session is created. If the initial handshake
fails, the mount fails. If TLS is not available
on a reconnect, drop the connection and try
again.
To support client peer authentication (mtls), the handshake daemon
will have configurable default authentication material (certificate
or pre-shared key). In the future, mount options can be added that
can provide this material on a per-mount basis.
Updates to mount.nfs (to support xprtsec=auto) and nfs(5) will be
sent under separate cover.

The 'nfs_server' and 'mount_server' structures include a union of
'struct sockaddr' (with the older 16 bytes max address size) and
'struct sockaddr_storage' which is large enough to hold all the
supported sa_family types (128 bytes max size). The runtime memcpy()
buffer overflow checker is seeing attempts to write beyond the 16
bytes as an overflow, but the actual expected size is that of 'struct
sockaddr_storage'. Plumb the use of 'struct sockaddr_storage' more
completely through-out NFS, which results in adjusting the memcpy()
buffers to the correct union members. Avoids this false positive run-time
warning under CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE:
memcpy: detected field-spanning write (size 28) of single field "&ctx->nfs_server.address" at fs/nfs/namespace.c:178 (size 16)
