Here is the big set of tty and serial driver changes for 6.8-rc1.
As usual, Jiri has a bunch of refactoring and cleanups for the tty core
and drivers in here, along with the usual set of rs485 updates (someday
this might work properly...) Along with those, in here are changes for:
- sc16is7xx serial driver updates
- platform driver removal api updates
- amba-pl011 driver updates
- tty driver binding updates
- other small tty/serial driver updates and changes
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
issues.

Pull ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"From the new features standpoint, the most significant change here is
the addition of CSI-2 and MIPI DisCo for Imaging support to the ACPI
device enumeration code that will allow MIPI cameras to be enumerated
through the platform firmware on systems using ACPI.
Also significant is the switch-over to threaded interrupt handlers for
the ACPI SCI and the dedicated EC interrupt (on systems where the
former is not used) which essentially allows all ACPI code to run with
local interrupts enabled. That should improve responsiveness
significantly on systems where multiple GPEs are enabled and the
handling of one SCI involves many I/O address space accesses which
previously had to be carried out in one go with disabled interrupts on
the local CPU.
Apart from the above, the ACPI thermal zone driver will use the
Thermal fast Sampling Period (_TFP) object if available, which should
allow temperature changes to be followed more accurately on some
systems, the ACPI Notify () handlers can run on all CPUs (not just on
CPU0), which should generally speed up the processing of events
signaled through the ACPI SCI, and the ACPI power button driver will
trigger wakeup key events via the input subsystem (on systems where it
is a system wakeup device)
In addition to that, there are the usual bunch of fixes and cleanups.

Now that the driver core can properly handle constant struct bus_type,
move the ssam_bus_type variable to be a constant structure as well,
placing it into read-only memory which can not be modified at runtime.
It's also never used outside of
drivers/platform/surface/aggregator/bus.c so make it static and don't
export it as no one is using it.

The ACPI LPSS driver and the Surface platform driver code use almost the
same code pattern for checking if one ACPI device is present in the list
returned by _DEP for another ACPI device.
To reduce the resulting code duplication, introduce a helper for that
called acpi_device_dep() and invoke it from both places.
No intentional functional impact.

There are only 4 users of acpi_evaluate_reference() and none of them
actually cares about the reason why it fails. All of them are only
interested in whether or not it is successful, so it can return a bool
value indicating that.
Modify acpi_evaluate_reference() as per the observation above and update
its callers accordingly so as to get rid of useless code and local
variables.

Serdev recv_buf() callback is supposed to return the amount of bytes
consumed, therefore an int in between 0 and count.
Do not return negative number in case of issue, when
ssam_controller_receive_buf() returns ESHUTDOWN just returns 0, e.g. no
bytes consumed, this keep the exact same behavior as it was before.
This fixes a potential WARN in serdev-ttyport.c:ttyport_receive_buf().

If platform_profile_register() fails, the driver does not propagate
the error, but instead probes successfully. This means when the driver
unbinds, the a warning might be issued by platform_profile_remove().
Fix this by propagating the error back to the caller of
surface_platform_profile_probe().
Compile-tested only.

Address a long-standing "TBD" comment in the ACPI headers regarding the
number of handles in struct acpi_handle_list.
The number 10, which along with the comment dates back to 2.4.23, seems
like it may have been arbitrarily chosen and isn't sufficient in all
cases [1].
Finally change the code to dynamically determine the size of the handles
table in struct acpi_handle_list and allocate it accordingly.
Update the users of to struct acpi_handle_list to take the additional
dynamic allocation into account.

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart
from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks.
To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return
void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to
.remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers
are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove().
Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove
callback to the void returning variant.

With CONFIG_ACPI enabled for RISC-V, this driver gets enabled
in allmodconfig build. However, RISC-V doesn't support sub-word
atomics which is used by this driver and hence allmodconfig
build will fail.
There is currently no plan to support this driver for RISC-V. So,
disable this driver for RISC-V even when ACPI is enabled.

Currently, event completion work-items are restricted to be run strictly
in non-parallel fashion by the respective workqueue. However, this has
lead to some problems:
In some instances, the event notifier function called inside this
completion workqueue takes a non-negligible amount of time to execute.
One such example is the battery event handling code (surface_battery.c),
which can result in a full battery information refresh, involving
further synchronous communication with the EC inside the event handler.
This is made worse if the communication fails spuriously, generally
incurring a multi-second timeout.
Since the event completions are run strictly non-parallel, this blocks
other events from being propagated to the respective subsystems. This
becomes especially noticeable for keyboard and touchpad input, which
also funnel their events through this system. Here, users have reported
occasional multi-second "freezes".
Note, however, that the event handling system was never intended to run
purely sequentially. Instead, we have one work struct per EC/SAM
subsystem, processing the event queue for that subsystem. These work
structs were intended to run in parallel, allowing sequential processing
of work items for each subsystem but parallel processing of work items
across subsystems.
The only restriction to this is the way the workqueue is created.
Therefore, replace create_workqueue() with alloc_workqueue() and do not
restrict the maximum number of parallel work items to be executed on
that queue, resolving any cross-subsystem blockage.

The device posture subsystem (POS) can provide different posture
sources. Different sources can provide different posture states and
sources can be identified by their ID.
For example, screen posture of the Surface Laptop Studio (SLS), which is
currently the only supported source, uses a source ID of 0x03. The
Surface Pro 9 uses the same subsystem for its Type-Cover, however,
provides different states for that under the ID 0x00.
To eventually support the Surface Pro 9 and potential future devices, we
need to properly disambiguate between source IDs. Therefore, add the
source ID to the state we carry and determine the tablet-mode state (as
well as state names) based on that.

Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.3-rc1.
There's a lot of changes this development cycle, most of the work falls
into two different categories:
- fw_devlink fixes and updates. This has gone through numerous review
cycles and lots of review and testing by lots of different devices.
Hopefully all should be good now, and Saravana will be keeping a
watch for any potential regression on odd embedded systems.
- driver core changes to work to make struct bus_type able to be moved
into read-only memory (i.e. const) The recent work with Rust has
pointed out a number of areas in the driver core where we are
passing around and working with structures that really do not have
to be dynamic at all, and they should be able to be read-only making
things safer overall. This is the contuation of that work (started
last release with kobject changes) in moving struct bus_type to be
constant. We didn't quite make it for this release, but the
remaining patches will be finished up for the release after this
one, but the groundwork has been laid for this effort.
Other than that we have in here:
- debugfs memory leak fixes in some subsystems
- error path cleanups and fixes for some never-able-to-be-hit
codepaths.
- cacheinfo rework and fixes
- Other tiny fixes, full details are in the shortlog
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
problems.

There's a lot of changes this development cycle, most of the work
falls into two different categories:
- fw_devlink fixes and updates. This has gone through numerous review
cycles and lots of review and testing by lots of different devices.
Hopefully all should be good now, and Saravana will be keeping a
watch for any potential regression on odd embedded systems.
- driver core changes to work to make struct bus_type able to be
moved into read-only memory (i.e. const) The recent work with Rust
has pointed out a number of areas in the driver core where we are
passing around and working with structures that really do not have
to be dynamic at all, and they should be able to be read-only
making things safer overall. This is the contuation of that work
(started last release with kobject changes) in moving struct
bus_type to be constant. We didn't quite make it for this release,
but the remaining patches will be finished up for the release after
this one, but the groundwork has been laid for this effort.
Other than that we have in here:
- debugfs memory leak fixes in some subsystems
- error path cleanups and fixes for some never-able-to-be-hit
codepaths.
- cacheinfo rework and fixes
- Other tiny fixes, full details are in the shortlog
All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
problems"
[ Geert Uytterhoeven points out that that last sentence isn't true, and
that there's a pending report that has a fix that is queued up - Linus ]

We currently have a struct ssam_request_sync and a function
ssam_request_sync(). While this is valid C, there are some downsides to
it.
One of these is that current Sphinx versions (>= 3.0) cannot
disambiguate between the two (see disucssion and pull request linked
below). It instead emits a "WARNING: Duplicate C declaration" and links
for the struct and function in the resulting documentation link to the
same entry (i.e. both to either function or struct documentation)
instead of their respective own entries.
While we could just ignore that and wait for a fix, there's also a point
to be made that the current naming can be somewhat confusing when
searching (e.g. via grep) or trying to understand the levels of
abstraction at play:
We currently have struct ssam_request_sync and associated functions
ssam_request_sync_[alloc|free|init|wait|...]() operating on this struct.
However, function ssam_request_sync() is one abstraction level above
this. Similarly, ssam_request_sync_with_buffer() is not a function
operating on struct ssam_request_sync, but rather a sibling to
ssam_request_sync(), both using the struct under the hood.
Therefore, rename the top level request functions:
ssam_request_sync() -> ssam_request_do_sync()
ssam_request_sync_with_buffer() -> ssam_request_do_sync_with_buffer()
ssam_request_sync_onstack() -> ssam_request_do_sync_onstack()

The target ID of the base hub is currently set to KIP (keyboard/
peripherals). However, even though it manages such devices with the KIP
target ID, the base hub itself is actually accessed via the SAM target
ID. So set it accordingly.
Note that the target ID of the hub can be chosen arbitrarily and does
not directly correspond to any physical or virtual component of the EC.
This change is only a code improvement intended for consistency and
clarity, it does not fix an actual bug.

Similar to the target category (TC), the target ID (TID) can be one
value out of a small number of choices, given in enum ssam_ssh_tid.
In the device ID macros, SSAM_SDEV() and SSAM_VDEV() we already use text
expansion to, both, remove some textual clutter for the target category
values and enforce that the value belongs to the known set. Now that we
know the names for the target IDs, use the same trick for them as well.
Also rename the SSAM_ANY_x macros to SSAM_SSH_x_ANY to better fit in.

Add command source and target IDs to trace events.
Tracing support for the Surface Aggregator driver was originally
implemented at a time when only two peers were known: Host and SAM. We
now know that there are at least five, with three actively being used
(Host, SAM, KIP; four with Debug if you want to count manually enabling
that interface). So it makes sense to also explicitly name the peers
involved when tracing.

It is possible that we (the host/kernel driver) receive command messages
that are not intended for us. Ignore those for now.
The whole story is a bit more complicated: It is possible to enable
debug output on SAM, which is sent via SSH command messages. By default
this output is sent to a debug connector, with its own target ID
(TID=0x03). It is possible to override the target of the debug output
and set it to the host/kernel driver. This, however, does not change the
original target ID of the message. Meaning, we receive messages with
TID=0x03 (debug) but expect to only receive messages with TID=0x00
(host).
The problem is that the different target ID also comes with a different
scope of request IDs. In particular, these do not follow the standard
event rules (i.e. do not fall into a set of small reserved values).
Therefore, current message handling interprets them as responses to
pending requests and tries to match them up via the request ID. However,
these debug output messages are not in fact responses, and therefore
this will at best fail to find the request and at worst pass on the
wrong data as response for a request.
Therefore ignore any command messages not intended for us (host) for
now. We can implement support for the debug messages once we have a
better understanding of them.
Note that this may also provide a bit more stability and avoid some
driver confusion in case any other targets want to talk to us in the
future, since we don't yet know what to do with those as well. A warning
for the dropped messages should suffice for now and also give us a
chance of discovering new targets if they come along without any
potential for bugs/instabilities.

Merge ACPI changes related to device enumeration, device object
managenet, operation region handling, table parsing and sysfs
interface:
- Use ZERO_PAGE(0) instead of empty_zero_page in the ACPI device
enumeration code (Giulio Benetti).
- Change the return type of the ACPI driver remove callback to void and
update its users accordingly (Dawei Li).
- Add general support for FFH address space type and implement the low-
level part of it for ARM64 (Sudeep Holla).
- Fix stale comments in the ACPI tables parsing code and make it print
more messages related to MADT (Hanjun Guo, Huacai Chen).
- Replace invocations of generic library functions with more kernel-
specific counterparts in the ACPI sysfs interface (Christophe JAILLET,
Xu Panda).
* acpi-scan:
ACPI: scan: substitute empty_zero_page with helper ZERO_PAGE(0)
* acpi-bus:
ACPI: FFH: Silence missing prototype warnings
ACPI: make remove callback of ACPI driver void
ACPI: bus: Fix the _OSC capability check for FFH OpRegion
arm64: Add architecture specific ACPI FFH Opregion callbacks
ACPI: Implement a generic FFH Opregion handler
* acpi-tables:
ACPI: tables: Fix the stale comments for acpi_locate_initial_tables()
ACPI: tables: Print CORE_PIC information when MADT is parsed
* acpi-sysfs:
ACPI: sysfs: use sysfs_emit() to instead of scnprintf()
ACPI: sysfs: Use kstrtobool() instead of strtobool()
For bus-based driver, device removal is implemented as:
1 device_remove()->
2 bus->remove()->
3 driver->remove()
Driver core needs no inform from callee(bus driver) about the
result of remove callback. In that case, commit fc7a6209d5
("bus: Make remove callback return void") forces bus_type::remove
be void-returned.
Now we have the situation that both 1 & 2 of calling chain are
void-returned, so it does not make much sense for 3(driver->remove)
to return non-void to its caller.
So the basic idea behind this change is making remove() callback of
any bus-based driver to be void-returned.
This change, for itself, is for device drivers based on acpi-bus.

Currently, we check any received packet whether we have already seen it
previously, regardless of the packet type (sequenced / unsequenced). We
do this by checking the sequence number. This assumes that sequence
numbers are valid for both sequenced and unsequenced packets. However,
this assumption appears to be incorrect.
On some devices, the sequence number field of unsequenced packets (in
particular HID input events on the Surface Pro 9) is always zero. As a
result, the current retransmission check kicks in and discards all but
the first unsequenced packet, breaking (among other things) keyboard and
touchpad input.
Note that we have, so far, only seen packets being retransmitted in
sequenced communication. In particular, this happens when there is an
ACK timeout, causing the EC (or us) to re-send the packet waiting for an
ACK. Arguably, retransmission / duplication of unsequenced packets
should not be an issue as there is no logical condition (such as an ACK
timeout) to determine when a packet should be sent again.
Therefore, remove the retransmission check for unsequenced packets
entirely to resolve the issue.

(Only an error message is printed if the value is non-zero that the

So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This
way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to

Add a driver providing a tablet-mode switch input device for Microsoft
Surface devices using the Surface Aggregator KIP subsystem (to manage
detachable peripherals) or POS subsystem (to obtain device posture
information).
The KIP (full name unknown, abbreviation found through reverse
engineering) subsystem is used on the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Pro X to
manage the keyboard cover. Among other things, it provides information
on the positioning (posture) of the cover (closed, laptop-style,
detached, folded-back, ...), which can be used to implement an input
device providing the SW_TABLET_MODE event. Similarly, the POS (posture
information) subsystem provides such information on the Surface Laptop
Studio, with the difference being that the keyboard is not detachable.
As implementing the tablet-mode switch for both subsystems is largely
similar, the driver proposed in this commit, in large, acts as a generic
tablet mode switch driver framework for the Surface Aggregator Module.
Specific implementations using this framework are provided for the KIP
and POS subsystems, adding tablet-mode switch support to the
aforementioned devices.
A few more notes on the Surface Laptop Studio:
A peculiarity of the Surface Laptop Studio is its "slate/tent" mode
(symbolized: user> _/\). In this mode, the screen covers the keyboard
but leaves the touchpad exposed. This is essentially a mode in-between
tablet and laptop, and it is debatable whether tablet-mode should be
enabled in this mode. We therefore let the user decide this via a module
parameter.
In particular, tablet-mode may bring up the on-screen touch keyboard
more easily, which would be desirable in this mode. However, some
user-space software currently also decides to disable keyboard and, more
importantly, touchpad input, while the touchpad is still accessible in
the "slate/tent" mode. Furthermore, this mode shares its identifier with
"slate/flipped" mode where the screen is flipped 180° and the keyboard
points away from the user (symbolized: user> /_). In this mode we would
like to enable auto-rotation, something that user-space software may
only do when tablet-mode is enabled. We therefore default to the
slate-mode enabling the tablet-mode switch.

Add support for the detachable keyboard cover on the Surface Pro 8.
The keyboard cover on the Surface Pro 8 is, unlike the keyboard covers
of earlier Surface Pro generations, handled via the Surface System
Aggregator Module (SSAM). The keyboard and touchpad (as well as other
HID input devices) of this cover are standard SSAM HID client devices
(just like keyboard and touchpad on e.g. the Surface Laptop 3 and 4),
however, some care needs to be taken as they can be physically detached
(similarly to the Surface Book 3). Specifically, the respective SSAM
client devices need to be removed when the keyboard cover has been
detached and (re-)initialized when the keyboard cover has been
(re-)attached.
On the Surface Pro 8, detachment of the keyboard cover (and by extension
its devices) is managed via the KIP subsystem. Therefore, said devices
need to be registered under the KIP device hub, which in turn will
remove and re-create/re-initialize those devices as needed.

Add a Surface System Aggregator Module (SSAM) client device hub for
hot-removable devices managed via the KIP subsystem.
The KIP subsystem (full name unknown, abbreviation has been obtained
through reverse engineering) is a subsystem that manages hot-removable
SSAM client devices. Specifically, it manages HID input devices
contained in the detachable keyboard cover of the Surface Pro 8 and
Surface Pro X.
The KIP subsystem handles a single group of devices (e.g. all devices
contained in the keyboard cover) and cannot handle devices individually.
Thus we model it as a client device hub, which (hot-)removes all devices
contained under it once removal of the hub (e.g. keyboard cover) has
been detected and (re-)adds all devices once the physical hub device has
been (re-)attached. To do this, use the previously generified SSAM
subsystem hub framework.

The Surface System Aggregator Module (SSAM) has multiple subsystems that
can manage detachable devices. At the moment, we only support the "base"
(BAS/0x11) subsystem, which is used on the Surface Book 3 to manage
devices (including keyboard, touchpad, and secondary battery) connected
to the base of the device.
The Surface Pro 8 has a new type-cover with keyboard and touchpad, which
is managed via the KIP/0x0e subsystem. The general procedure is the
same, but with slightly different events and setup. To make
implementation of the KIP hub easier and prevent duplication, generify
the parts of the base hub that we can use for the KIP hub (or any
potential future subsystem hubs).
This also switches over to use the newly introduced "hot-remove"
functionality, which should prevent communication issues when devices
have been detached.
Lastly, also drop the undocumented and unused sysfs "state" attribute of
the base hub. It has at best been useful for debugging.

When SSAM client devices have been (physically) hot-removed,
communication attempts with those devices may fail and time out. This
can even extend to event notifiers, due to which timeouts may occur
during device removal, slowing down that process.
Add a parameter to the notifier unregister function that allows skipping
communication with the EC to prevent this. Furthermore, add wrappers for
registering and unregistering notifiers belonging to SSAM client devices
that automatically check if the device has been marked as hot-removed
and communication should be avoided.
Note that non-SSAM client devices can generally not be hot-removed, so
also add a convenience wrapper for those, defaulting to allow

's3_wmi.input' is a managed resource, so there should be no need to free it
explicitly.
Moreover, 's3_wmi' is a global variable. 's3_wmi.input' should be NULL
when this error handling path is executed, because it has not been
assigned yet.
All this is puzzling. So simplify it and remove a few lines of code to have
it be more straightforward.

Microsoft Surface platform-specific devices are only present on
Microsoft Surface platforms, which are currently limited to arm64 and
x86. Hence add a dependency on ARM64 || X86, to prevent asking the user
about drivers for these devices when configuring a kernel for an
architecture that does not support Microsoft Surface platforms.

Since the Surface XBL Driver does not depend on ACPI, the
platform/surface directory as a whole no longer depends on ACPI. With
respect to this, the ACPI dependency is moved into each config that depends
on ACPI individually.

Currently, there are similar functions defined in the Aggregator
Registry and the controller core.
Make client device removal more generic and export it. We can then use
this function later on to remove client devices from device hubs as well
as the controller and avoid re-defining similar things.

Add preliminary support for the Surface Pro 8 to the Surface Aggregator
registry. This includes battery/charger status and platform profile
support.
In contrast to earlier Surface Pro generations, the keyboard cover is
now also connected via the Surface Aggregator Module (whereas it was
previously connected via USB or HID-over-I2C). To properly support the
HID devices of that cover, however, more changes regarding hot-removal
of Surface Aggregator client devices as well as a new device hub driver
are required. We will address those things in a follow-up series, so do
not add any HID device IDs just yet.
