f11b48aa67 Revert "tun/tap & vhost-net: avoid ptr_ring tail-drop when a qdisc is present"
This reverts commit 1d6e569b7d.

The commit stops the netdev queue when the ptr_ring is full instead of
dropping the packet. My own tests showed no relevant regression, but on
Brett Sheffield's librecast testbed an IPv6 multicast testcase got
slower. With 8 iperf3 TCP threads sending, the throughput dropped from
13.5 Gbit/s to 9.13 Gbit/s.

7f2fcff15e tun: zero the whole vnet header in tun_put_user()
tun_put_user() declares an on-stack struct virtio_net_hdr_v1_hash_tunnel
without zeroing it. For a non-tunnel skb, virtio_net_hdr_tnl_from_skb()
only initializes the first 10 bytes (sizeof(struct virtio_net_hdr)),
leaving bytes 10..23 (num_buffers and the hash/tunnel fields) as stack
garbage.

An unprivileged user can set the vnet header size to 24 with
TUNSETVNETHDRSZ, so __tun_vnet_hdr_put() copies all 24 bytes of the
partially-initialized struct to userspace, leaking 14 bytes of kernel
stack on every read of a non-tunnel packet.

Fix it the same way tun_get_user() already does by zeroing the whole
header right after declaration.

aa8963fdce tun: free page on build_skb failure in tun_xdp_one()
When build_skb() fails in tun_xdp_one(), the function sets ret to
-ENOMEM and jumps to the out label, which returns without freeing the
page that vhost_net_build_xdp() allocated for the frame. As with the
short-frame rejection path, tun_sendmsg() discards the per-buffer error
and still returns total_len, so vhost_tx_batch() takes the success path
and never frees the page. Each build_skb() failure in a batch leaks one
page-frag chunk.

Free the page before taking the error path, matching the put_page() the
other error exits of tun_xdp_one() already perform.

f4feb1e200 tun: free page on short-frame rejection in tun_xdp_one()
tun_xdp_one() returns -EINVAL on a frame shorter than ETH_HLEN without
freeing the page that vhost_net_build_xdp() allocated for it.
tun_sendmsg() discards that -EINVAL and still returns total_len, so
vhost_tx_batch() takes the success path and never frees the page; each
short frame in a batch leaks one page-frag chunk.

A local process that can open /dev/net/tun and /dev/vhost-net can hit
this path: it attaches a tun/tap device as the vhost-net backend and
feeds TX descriptors whose length minus the virtio-net header is below
ETH_HLEN. Each kick leaks the page-frag chunks for that batch, and a
tight submission loop exhausts host memory and triggers an OOM panic.
Free the page before returning -EINVAL, matching the XDP-program error
path in the same function.

1d6e569b7d tun/tap & vhost-net: avoid ptr_ring tail-drop when a qdisc is present
This commit prevents tail-drop when a qdisc is present and the ptr_ring
becomes full. Once the ring reaches capacity after a produce attempt,
the netdev queue is stopped instead of dropping subsequent packets.
If no qdisc is present, the previous tail-drop behavior is preserved.

If producing an entry fails anyway due to a race, tun_net_xmit() drops
the packet. Such races are expected because LLTX is enabled and the
transmit path operates without the usual locking.

The __tun_wake_queue() function of the consumer races with the producer
for waking/stopping the netdev queue, which could result in a stalled
queue. Therefore, an smp_mb__after_atomic() is introduced that pairs
with the smp_mb() of the consumer. It follows the principle of store
buffering described in tools/memory-model/Documentation/recipes.txt:

- The producer in tun_net_xmit() first sets __QUEUE_STATE_DRV_XOFF,
  followed by an smp_mb__after_atomic() (= smp_mb()), and then reads the
  ring with __ptr_ring_check_produce().

- The consumer in __tun_wake_queue() first writes zero to the ring in
  __ptr_ring_consume(), followed by an smp_mb(), and then reads the queue
  status with netif_tx_queue_stopped().

=> Following the aforementioned principle, it is impossible for the
   producer to see a full ring (and therefore not wake the queue on the
   re-check) while the consumer simultaneously fails to see a stopped
   queue (and therefore also does not wake it).

Benchmarks:
The benchmarks show a slight regression in raw transmission performance
when using two sending threads. Packet loss also occurs only in the
two-thread sending case; no packet loss was observed with a single
sending thread.

Test setup:
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X at 4.3 GHz, 3200 MHz RAM, isolated QEMU threads;
Average over 50 runs @ 100,000,000 packets. SRSO and spectre v2
mitigations disabled.

Note for tap+vhost-net:
XDP drop program active in VM -> ~2.5x faster; slower for tap due to
more syscalls (high utilization of entry_SYSRETQ_unsafe_stack in perf)

baf808fe4f vhost-net: wake queue of tun/tap after ptr_ring consume
Add tun_wake_queue() to tun.c and export it for use by vhost-net. The
function validates that the file belongs to a tun/tap device and that
the tfile exists, dereferences the tun_struct under RCU, and delegates
to __tun_wake_queue().

vhost_net_buf_produce() now calls tun_wake_queue() after a successful
batched consume of the ring to allow the netdev subqueue to be woken up.
The point is to allow the queue to be stopped when it gets full, which
is required for traffic shaping - implemented by the following
"avoid ptr_ring tail-drop when a qdisc is present".

Without the corresponding queue stopping, this patch alone causes no
throughput regression for a tap+vhost-net setup sending to a qemu VM:
3.857 Mpps to 3.891 Mpps.

d4c22d70d7 tun/tap: add ptr_ring consume helper with netdev queue wakeup
Introduce tun_ring_consume() that wraps ptr_ring_consume() and calls
__tun_wake_queue(). The latter wakes the stopped netdev subqueue once
half of the ring capacity has been consumed, tracked via the new
cons_cnt field in tun_file. As a safety net, the queue is also woken on
the last consumed entry if it leaves the ring empty. The point is to
allow the queue to be stopped when it gets full, which is required for
traffic shaping - implemented by the following "avoid ptr_ring tail-drop
when a qdisc is present".

Some implementation details:
- tun_ring_recv() replaces ptr_ring_consume() with tun_ring_consume()
  to properly wake the queue.
- __tun_detach() locks the tx_ring.consumer_lock to avoid races with
  the consumer on the queue_index.
- The ptr_ring_consume() call in tun_queue_purge() is not replaced with
  tun_ring_consume(). Instead, within the same tx_ring.consumer_lock
  in __tun_detach(), the netdev queue is woken for the ntfile taking
  it over, to avoid a possible stall. This does not matter for
  tun_detach_all(), as it is called during device teardown and no tfile
  takes over any queue.
- Reset cons_cnt in tun_attach() so the half-ring wake threshold is
  valid for the new ring size after ptr_ring_resize().
- tun_queue_resize() wakes all queues after resizing with the proper
  tx_ring.consumer_lock and resets the cons_cnt to avoid a possible
  stale queue.
- The aforementioned upcoming patch explains the pairing of the smp_mb()
  of __tun_wake_queue().

Without the corresponding queue stopping, this patch alone causes no
regression for a tap setup sending to a qemu VM: 1.132 Mpps
to 1.134 Mpps.

bf4afc53b7 Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using

    git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
        xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'

to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.

Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.

For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

69050f8d6d treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:

Single allocations:	kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)

Array allocations:	kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)

Flex array allocations:	kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)

(where TYPE may also be *VAR)

The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

introduced netif_ vs dev_ function semantics: the former expects locked
netdev, the latter takes care of the locking. We don't strictly

now that don't fit. Rename them to netif_xxx where appropriate.

netif_get_mac_address is used only by tun/tap, so move it into
NETDEV_INTERNAL namespace.

a6f190630d net: track pfmemalloc drops via SKB_DROP_REASON_PFMEMALLOC
Add a new SKB drop reason (SKB_DROP_REASON_PFMEMALLOC) to track packets
dropped due to memory pressure. In production environments, we've observed
memory exhaustion reported by memory layer stack traces, but these drops
were not properly tracked in the SKB drop reason infrastructure.

While most network code paths now properly report pfmemalloc drops, some
protocol-specific socket implementations still use sk_filter() without
drop reason tracking:
- Bluetooth L2CAP sockets
- CAIF sockets
- IUCV sockets
- Netlink sockets
- SCTP sockets
- Unix domain sockets

These remaining cases represent less common paths and could be converted
in a follow-up patch if needed. The current implementation provides
significantly improved observability into memory pressure events in the
network stack, especially for key protocols like TCP and UDP, helping to
diagnose problems in production environments.

Currently the kernel virtio support limits the feature space to 64,
while the virtio specification allows for a larger number of features.
Specifically the GSO-over-UDP-tunnel-related virtio features use bits
65-69.

The first four patches in this series rework the virtio and vhost
feature support to cope with up to 128 bits. The limit is set by
a define and could be easily raised in future, as needed.

This implementation choice is aimed at keeping the code churn as
limited as possible. For the same reason, only the virtio_net driver is
reworked to leverage the extended feature space; all other
virtio/vhost drivers are unaffected, but could be upgraded to support
the extended features space in a later time.

The last four patches bring in the actual GSO over UDP tunnel support.
As per specification, some additional fields are introduced into the
virtio net header to support the new offload. The presence of such
fields depends on the negotiated features.

New helpers are introduced to convert the UDP-tunneled skb metadata to
an extended virtio net header and vice versa. Such helpers are used by
the tun and virtio_net driver to cope with the newly supported offloads.

Tested with basic stream transfer with all the possible permutations of
host kernel/qemu/guest kernel with/without GSO over UDP tunnel support.

0ca23a4d64 net: tun: Enable transfer of XDP metadata to skb
When the XDP metadata area was used, it is expected that the same
metadata can also be accessed from TC, as can be read in the description
of the bpf_xdp_adjust_meta helper function. In the tun driver, this was
not yet implemented.

To make this work, the skb that is being built on XDP_PASS should know
of the current size of the metadata area. This is ensured by adding
calls to skb_metadata_set. For the tun_xdp_one code path, an additional
check is necessary to handle the case where the externally initialized
xdp_buff has no metadata support (xdp->data_meta == xdp->data + 1).

c2315ebb05 net: tun: Enable XDP metadata support
Enable the support for the bpf_xdp_adjust_meta helper function for XDP
buffers initialized by the tun driver. This allows to reserve a metadata
area that is useful to pass any information from one XDP program to
another one, for example when using tail-calls.

Whether this helper function can be used in an XDP program depends on
how the xdp_buff was initialized. Most net drivers initialize the
xdp_buff in a way, that allows bpf_xdp_adjust_meta to be used. In case
of the tun driver, this is currently not the case.

There are two code paths in the tun driver that lead to a
bpf_prog_run_xdp and where metadata support should be enabled:

1. tun_build_skb, which is called by tun_get_user and is used when
   writing packets from userspace into the device. In this case, the
   xdp_buff created in tun_build_skb has no support for
   bpf_xdp_adjust_meta and calls of that helper function result in
   ENOTSUPP.

   For this code path, it's sufficient to set the meta_valid argument of
   the xdp_prepare_buff call. The reserved headroom is large enough
   already.

2. tun_xdp_one, which is called by tun_sendmsg which again is called by
   other drivers (e.g. vhost_net). When the TUN_MSG_PTR mode is used,
   another driver may pass a batch of xdp_buffs to the tun driver. In
   this case, that other driver is the one initializing the xdp_buff.

   See commit 043d222f93 ("tuntap: accept an array of XDP buffs
   through sendmsg()") for details.

   For now, the vhost_net driver is the only one using TUN_MSG_PTR and
   it already initializes the xdp_buffs with metadata support and
   sufficient headroom. But the tun driver disables it again, so the
   xdp_set_data_meta_invalid call has to be removed.

a70c7b3cbc tun: revert fix group permission check
This reverts commit 3ca459eaba.

The blamed commit caused a regression when neither tun->owner nor
tun->group is set. This is intended to be allowed, but now requires
CAP_NET_ADMIN.

Discussion in the referenced thread pointed out that the original
issue that prompted this patch can be resolved in userspace.

The relaxed access control may also make a device accessible when it
previously wasn't, while existing users may depend on it to not be.

This is a clean pure git revert, except for fixing the indentation on
the gid_valid line that checkpatch correctly flagged.

3ca459eaba tun: fix group permission check
Currently tun checks the group permission even if the user have matched.
Besides going against the usual permission semantic, this has a
very interesting implication: if the tun group is not among the
supplementary groups of the tun user, then effectively no one can
access the tun device. CAP_SYS_ADMIN still can, but its the same as
not setting the tun ownership.

This patch relaxes the group checking so that either the user match
or the group match is enough. This avoids the situation when no one
can access the device even though the ownership is properly set.

Also I simplified the logic by removing the redundant inversions:
tun_not_capable() --> !tun_capable()

alloc_ltalkdev in net/appletalk/dev.c is dead since
commit 00f3696f75 ("net: appletalk: remove cops support")

Removing it (and it's helper) leaves dev.c and if_ltalk.h empty;
remove them and the Makefile entry.

tun.c was including that if_ltalk.h but actually wanted
the uapi version for LTALK_ALEN, fix up the path.

 "This is the work to cleanup and shrink struct file significantly.

  Right now, (focusing on x86) struct file is 232 bytes. After this
  series struct file will be 184 bytes aka 3 cacheline and a spare 8
  bytes for future extensions at the end of the struct.

  With struct file being as ubiquitous as it is this should make a
  difference for file heavy workloads and allow further optimizations in
  the future.

   - struct fown_struct was embedded into struct file letting it take up
     32 bytes in total when really it shouldn't even be embedded in
     struct file in the first place. Instead, actual users of struct
     fown_struct now allocate the struct on demand. This frees up 24
     bytes.

   - Move struct file_ra_state into the union containg the cleanup hooks
     and move f_iocb_flags out of the union. This closes a 4 byte hole
     we created earlier and brings struct file to 192 bytes. Which means
     struct file is 3 cachelines and we managed to shrink it by 40
     bytes.

   - Reorder struct file so that nothing crosses a cacheline.

     I suspect that in the future we will end up reordering some members
     to mitigate false sharing issues or just because someone does
     actually provide really good perf data.

   - Shrinking struct file to 192 bytes is only part of the work.

     Files use a slab that is SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU and when a kmem cache
     is created with SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU the free pointer must be
     located outside of the object because the cache doesn't know what
     part of the memory can safely be overwritten as it may be needed to
     prevent object recycling.

     That has the consequence that SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU may end up
     adding a new cacheline.

     So this also contains work to add a new kmem_cache_create_rcu()
     function that allows the caller to specify an offset where the
     freelist pointer is supposed to be placed. Thus avoiding the
     implicit addition of a fourth cacheline.

   - And finally this removes the f_version member in struct file.

     The f_version member isn't particularly well-defined. It is mainly
     used as a cookie to detect concurrent seeks when iterating
     directories. But it is also abused by some subsystems for
     completely unrelated things.

     It is mostly a directory and filesystem specific thing that doesn't
     really need to live in struct file and with its wonky semantics it
     really lacks a specific function.

     For pipes, f_version is (ab)used to defer poll notifications until
     a write has happened. And struct pipe_inode_info is used by
     multiple struct files in their ->private_data so there's no chance
     of pushing that down into file->private_data without introducing
     another pointer indirection.

     But pipes don't rely on f_pos_lock so this adds a union into struct
     file encompassing f_pos_lock and a pipe specific f_pipe member that
     pipes can use. This union of course can be extended to other file
     types and is similar to what we do in struct inode already"

1934b21261 file: reclaim 24 bytes from f_owner
We do embedd struct fown_struct into struct file letting it take up 32
bytes in total. We could tweak struct fown_struct to be more compact but
really it shouldn't even be embedded in struct file in the first place.

Instead, actual users of struct fown_struct should allocate the struct
on demand. This frees up 24 bytes in struct file.

That will have some potentially user-visible changes for the ownership
fcntl()s. Some of them can now fail due to allocation failures.
Practically, that probably will almost never happen as the allocations
are small and they only happen once per file.

The fown_struct is used during kill_fasync() which is used by e.g.,
pipes to generate a SIGIO signal. Sending of such signals is conditional
on userspace having set an owner for the file using one of the F_OWNER
fcntl()s. Such users will be unaffected if struct fown_struct is
allocated during the fcntl() call.

There are a few subsystems that call __f_setown() expecting
file->f_owner to be allocated:

(1) tun devices
    file->f_op->fasync::tun_chr_fasync()
    -> __f_setown()

    There are no callers of tun_chr_fasync().

(2) tty devices

    file->f_op->fasync::tty_fasync()
    -> __tty_fasync()
       -> __f_setown()

    tty_fasync() has no additional callers but __tty_fasync() has. Note
    that __tty_fasync() only calls __f_setown() if the @on argument is
    true. It's called from:

    file->f_op->release::tty_release()
    -> tty_release()
       -> __tty_fasync()
          -> __f_setown()

    tty_release() calls __tty_fasync() with @on false
    => __f_setown() is never called from tty_release().
       => All callers of tty_release() are safe as well.

    file->f_op->release::tty_open()
    -> tty_release()
       -> __tty_fasync()
          -> __f_setown()

    __tty_hangup() calls __tty_fasync() with @on false
    => __f_setown() is never called from tty_release().
       => All callers of __tty_hangup() are safe as well.

From the callchains it's obvious that (1) and (2) end up getting called
via file->f_op->fasync(). That can happen either through the F_SETFL
fcntl() with the FASYNC flag raised or via the FIOASYNC ioctl(). If
FASYNC is requested and the file isn't already FASYNC then
file->f_op->fasync() is called with @on true which ends up causing both
(1) and (2) to call __f_setown().

(1) and (2) are the only subsystems that call __f_setown() from the
file->f_op->fasync() handler. So both (1) and (2) have been updated to
allocate a struct fown_struct prior to calling fasync_helper() to
register with the fasync infrastructure. That's safe as they both call
fasync_helper() which also does allocations if @on is true.

The other interesting case are file leases:

(3) file leases
    lease_manager_ops->lm_setup::lease_setup()
    -> __f_setown()

    Which in turn is called from:

    generic_add_lease()
    -> lease_manager_ops->lm_setup::lease_setup()
       -> __f_setown()

So here again we can simply make generic_add_lease() allocate struct
fown_struct prior to the lease_manager_ops->lm_setup::lease_setup()
which happens under a spinlock.

With that the two remaining subsystems that call __f_setown() are:

(4) dnotify
(5) sockets

Both have their own custom ioctls to set struct fown_struct and both
have been converted to allocate a struct fown_struct on demand from
their respective ioctls.

Interactions with O_PATH are fine as well e.g., when opening a /dev/tty
as O_PATH then no file->f_op->open() happens thus no file->f_owner is
allocated. That's fine as no file operation will be set for those and
the device has never been opened. fcntl()s called on such things will
just allocate a ->f_owner on demand. Although I have zero idea why'd you
care about f_owner on an O_PATH fd.

049584807f tun: add missing verification for short frame
The cited commit missed to check against the validity of the frame length
in the tun_xdp_one() path, which could cause a corrupted skb to be sent
downstack. Even before the skb is transmitted, the
tun_xdp_one-->eth_type_trans() may access the Ethernet header although it
can be less than ETH_HLEN. Once transmitted, this could either cause
out-of-bound access beyond the actual length, or confuse the underlayer
with incorrect or inconsistent header length in the skb metadata.

In the alternative path, tun_get_user() already prohibits short frame which
has the length less than Ethernet header size from being transmitted for
IFF_TAP.

This is to drop any frame shorter than the Ethernet header size just like
how tun_get_user() does.

During the introduction of struct bpf_net_context handling for
XDP-redirect, the tun driver has been missed.
Jakub also pointed out that there is another call chain to
do_xdp_generic() originating from netif_receive_skb() and drivers may
use it outside from the NAPI context.

Set the bpf_net_context before invoking BPF XDP program within the TUN
driver. Set the bpf_net_context also in do_xdp_generic() if a xdp
program is available.

Pull io_uring updates from Jens Axboe:

 - Greatly improve send zerocopy performance, by enabling coalescing of
   sent buffers.

   MSG_ZEROCOPY already does this with send(2) and sendmsg(2), but the
   io_uring side did not. In local testing, the crossover point for send
   zerocopy being faster is now around 3000 byte packets, and it
   performs better than the sync syscall variants as well.

   This feature relies on a shared branch with net-next, which was
   pulled into both branches.

 - Unification of how async preparation is done across opcodes.

   Previously, opcodes that required extra memory for async retry would
   allocate that as needed, using on-stack state until that was the
   case. If async retry was needed, the on-stack state was adjusted
   appropriately for a retry and then copied to the allocated memory.

   This led to some fragile and ugly code, particularly for read/write
   handling, and made storage retries more difficult than they needed to
   be. Allocate the memory upfront, as it's cheap from our pools, and
   use that state consistently both initially and also from the retry
   side.

 - Move away from using remap_pfn_range() for mapping the rings.

   This is really not the right interface to use and can cause lifetime
   issues or leaks. Additionally, it means the ring sq/cq arrays need to
   be physically contigious, which can cause problems in production with
   larger rings when services are restarted, as memory can be very
   fragmented at that point.

   Move to using vm_insert_page(s) for the ring sq/cq arrays, and apply
   the same treatment to mapped ring provided buffers. This also helps
   unify the code we have dealing with allocating and mapping memory.

   Hard to see in the diffstat as we're adding a few features as well,
   but this kills about ~400 lines of code from the codebase as well.

 - Add support for bundles for send/recv.

   When used with provided buffers, bundles support sending or receiving
   more than one buffer at the time, improving the efficiency by only
   needing to call into the networking stack once for multiple sends or
   receives.

 - Tweaks for our accept operations, supporting both a DONTWAIT flag for
   skipping poll arm and retry if we can, and a POLLFIRST flag that the
   application can use to skip the initial accept attempt and rely
   purely on poll for triggering the operation. Both of these have
   identical flags on the receive side already.

 - Make the task_work ctx locking unconditional.

   We had various code paths here that would do a mix of lock/trylock
   and set the task_work state to whether or not it was locked. All of
   that goes away, we lock it unconditionally and get rid of the state
   flag indicating whether it's locked or not.

   The state struct still exists as an empty type, can go away in the
   future.

 - Add support for specifying NOP completion values, allowing it to be
   used for error handling testing.

 - Use set/test bit for io-wq worker flags. Not strictly needed, but
   also doesn't hurt and helps silence a KCSAN warning.

 - Cleanups for io-wq locking and work assignments, closing a tiny race
   where cancelations would not be able to find the work item reliably.

 - Misc fixes, cleanups, and improvements

7ab4f16f9e net: extend ubuf_info callback to ops structure
We'll need to associate additional callbacks with ubuf_info, introduce
a structure holding ubuf_info callbacks. Apart from a more smarter
io_uring notification management introduced in next patches, it can be
used to generalise msg_zerocopy_put_abort() and also store
->sg_from_iter, which is currently passed in struct msghdr.

f8bbc07ac5 tun: limit printing rate when illegal packet received by tun dev
vhost_worker will call tun call backs to receive packets. If too many
illegal packets arrives, tun_do_read will keep dumping packet contents.
When console is enabled, it will costs much more cpu time to dump
packet and soft lockup will be detected.

net_ratelimit mechanism can be used to limit the dumping rate.
