Replace <linux/mod_devicetable.h> by more specific <linux/device-id/*.h> (c files)
Replace the #include of <linux/mod_devicetable.h> by the more specific <linux/device-id/*.h> where applicable. For most cases the include can be dropped completely, only a few drivers need one or two headers added. Patchsets in this merge:
- The 2 patch series "selftests/mm: clean up build output and verbosity"
from Li Wang removes some noise from the MM selftests build out.
- The 3 patch series "mm: Free contiguous order-0 pages efficiently"
from Ryan Roberts speeds up the freeing of a batch of 0-order pages by
first scanning them for coalescing opportunities. This is applicable to
vfree() and to the releasing of frozen pages.
- The 11 patch series "mm/damon: introduce DAMOS failed region quota
charge ratio" from SeongJae Park addresses a DAMOS usability issue: The
DAMOS quota often exhausts prematurely because it charges for all memory
attempted, causing slow and inconsistent performance when actions fail
on unreclaimable memory.
To fix this, a new feature lets users set a smaller, flexible quota
charge ratio (via a numerator and denominator) for failed regions.
Since failed actions cause less overhead, reducing their quota cost
ensures more predictable and efficient DAMOS processing
- The 8 patch series "selftests/cgroup: improve zswap tests robustness
and support large page sizes" from Li Wang fixes various spurious
failures and improves the overall robustness of the cgroup zswap
selftests.
- The 3 patch series "fix MAP_DROPPABLE not supported errno" from
Anthony Yznaga fixes an issue in the mlock selftests on arm32.
- The 2 patch series "mm: huge_memory: clean up defrag sysfs with
shared" from Breno Leitao does some maintenance work in the huge_memory
code.
- The 3 patch series "treewide: fixup gfp_t printks" from Brendan
Jackman uses the special vprintf() gfp_t conversion in various places.
- The 6 patch series "mm: Fix vmemmap optimization accounting and
initialization" from Muchun Song fixes several bugs in the vmemmap
optimization, mainly around incorrect page accounting and memmap
initialization in the DAX and memory hotplug paths. It also fixes
pageblock migratetype initialization and struct page initialization for
ZONE_DEVICE compound pages.
- The 4 patch series "mm/damon: repost non-hotfix reviewed patches in
damon/next tree" from is a sprinkle of unrelated minor bugfixes for
DAMON.
- The 3 patch series "mm: remove page_mapped()" from David Hildenbrand
remove this function from the tree, replacing it with folio_mapped().
- The 10 patch series "mm/damon: let DAMON be paused and resumed" from
SeongJae Park permits DAMON to be paused and resumed without losing its
current state.
- The 3 patch series "kasan: hw_tags: Disable tagging for stack and
page-tables" from Muhammad Usama Anjum simplifies and speeds up kasan by
removing its ineffective tagging of stacks and page tables.
- The 7 patch series "mm/damon/reclaim,lru_sort: monitor all system rams
by default" from SeongJae Park simplifies deployment on diverse hardware
like NUMA systems by updating DAMON_RECLAIM and DAMON_LRU_SORT to
automatically monitor the physical address range covering all System RAM
areas by default, replacing the overly restrictive behavior that only
targeted the single largest memory block to save on negligible overhead.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon/sysfs: document filters/ directory as
deprecated" from SeongJae Park updates some DAMON docs.
- The 8 patch series "mm: use spinlock guards for zone lock" from Dmitry
Ilvokhin switches zone->lock handling over to using the guard()
mechanisms.
- The 2 patch series "mm/filemap: tighten mmap_miss hit accounting" from
fujunjie fixes a flaw where the mmap_miss counter over-credited page
cache hits during fault-arounds and page-fault retries. This results in
significant reduction of redundant synchronous mmap readahead I/O,
drastically cutting down execution time and gigabytes read for sparse
random or strided memory access workloads.
- The 2 patch series "selftests/cgroup: Fix false positive failures in
test_percpu_basic" from Li Wang fixes a couple of false-positives in the
cgroup kmem selftests.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon/reclaim: support monitoring intervals
auto-tuning" from SeongJae Park adds a new parameter to DAMON permitting
DAMON_RECLAIM to automatically tune DAMON's sampling and aggregation
intervals.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon/stat: add kdamond_pid parameter" from
SeongJae Park chnges DAMON_STAT to provide the pid of its kdamond.
- The 2 patch series "mm/kmemleak: dedupe verbose scan output" from
Breno Leitao removes large amounts of duplicated backtraces from the
verbose-mode kmemleak output.
- The 8 patch series "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 1)"
from David Hildenbrand reduces our use of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE,
with a view to removing it entirely in a later series.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon: validate min_region_size to be power of
2" from Liew Rui Yan prevents users from passing a non-power-of-2 value
of `addr_unit', as this later results in undesirable behavior.
- The 2 patch series "mm: document read_pages and simplify usage" from
Frederick Mayle does as claimed.
- The 3 patch series "tools/mm/page-types: Fix misc bugs" from Ye Liu
fixes three issues in tools/mm/page-types.c.
- The 4 patch series "mm: misc cleanups from __GFP_UNMAPPED series" from
Brendan Jackman implements several cleanups in the page allocator and
related code.
- The 12 patch series "mm, swap: swap table phase IV: unify allocation"
from Kairui Song unifies the allocation and charging of anon and shmem
swap in folios, provides better synchronization, consolidates the
metadata management, hence dropping the static array and map, and
improves performance.
- The 28 patch series "mm/damon: introduce data attributes monitoring"
from SeongJae Park extends DAMON for monitoring general data attributes
other than accesses.
- The 5 patch series "mm/vmalloc: free unused pages on vrealloc()
shrink" from Shivam Kalra implements the TODO in vrealloc() to unmap and
free unused pages when shrinking across a page boundary.
- The 3 patch series "mm/damon: documentation and comment fixes" from
niecheng does as advertised.
- The 3 patch series "remove mmap_action success, error hooks" from
Lorenzo Stoakes eliminates custom hooks from mmap_action by removing the
problematic success_hook which allowed drivers to improperly access
uninitialized VMAs. It replaces the error_hook with a simple error-code
field and updates the memory char driver accordingly.
- The 14 patch series "mm/damon: minor improvements for code readability
and tests" from SeongJae Park implements minor improvements in code
readability and tests for DAMON.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon: fix macro arguments and clarify quota
goals doc" from Maksym Shcherba does those things.
- The 2 patch series "userfaultfd: merge fs/userfaultfd.c into
mm/userfaultfd.c" from Mike Rapoport performs that code movement.
- The 15 patch series "mm/mglru: improve reclaim loop and dirty folio"
from Kairui Song and others cleans up and slightly improves MGLRU's
reclaim loop and dirty writeback handling. Large performance
improvements are measured.
- The 3 patch series "use vma locks for proc/pid/{smaps|numa_maps}
reads" from Suren Baghdasaryan uses per-vma locks when reading
/proc/pid/smaps and /proc/pid/numa_maps similar to reduce contention on
central mmap_lock.

Konstantin Khorenko fixes a few build glitches in the memfd selftest
code.
- The 4 patch series "memcg: shrink obj_stock_pcp and cache multiple
objcgs" from Shakeel Butt resolves a 68% performance regression caused
by NUMA-node cache thrashing around struct obj_stock_pcp by shrinking
its existing fields and expanding it into a multi-slot array that caches
up to five obj_cgroup pointers per CPU, allowing per-node variants of
the same memcg to coexist within a single 64-byte cache line.
- The 2 patch series "zram: writeback fixes" from Sergey Senozhatsky
addresses a couple of unrelated zram writeback issues.
- The 9 patch series "mm: switch THP shrinker to list_lru" from Johannes
Weiner resolves NUMA-awareness issues and streamlines callsite
interaction by refactoring and extending the list_lru API to completely
replace the complex, open-coded deferred split queue for Transparent
Huge Pages (THPs).
- The 2 patch series "mm: improve large folio readahead for exec memory"
from Usama Arif improves large-folio readahead on systems like 64K-page
arm64 by preventing the mmap_miss check from permanently disabling
target-oriented VM_EXEC readahead, and by generalizing the
force_thp_readahead gate to support mappings with any usefully large
maximum folio order under the cache cap.
- The 6 patch series "userfaultfd/pagemap: pre-existing fixes" from
Kiryl Shutsemau fixes a bunch of minor issues in the
userfaultfd/pagemap, all of which were flagged by Sashiko review of
proposed new material.
- The 5 patch series "mm/sparse-vmemmap: Provide generic

generic versions of these two functions so the four arch-specific
implementations can be removed.
- The 2 patch series "mm/swap, PM: hibernate: fix swapoff race in
uswsusp by pinning swap device" from Youngjun Park addresses a
uswsusp-vs-swapoff race and reduces the swap device reference
taking/releasing frequency.
- The 2 patch series "mm/hmm: A fix and a selftest" from Dev Jain does
as claimed.

Networking changes for 7.2.
Core & protocols
----------------
- Work on removing rtnl_lock protection throughout the stack continues.
In this chapter:
- don't use rtnl_lock for IPv6 multicast routing configuration
- don't take rtnl_lock in ethtool for modern drivers
- prepare Qdisc dump callbacks for rtnl_lock removal
- Support dumping just ifindex + name of all interfaces, under RCU.
It's a common operation for Netlink CLI tools (when translating
names to ifindexes) and previously required full rtnl_lock.
- Support dumping qdiscs and page pools for a specific netdev. Even tho
user space wants a dump of all netdevs, most of the time, the OOO
programming model results in repeating the dump for each netdev.
Which, in absence of a cache, leads to a O(n^2) behavior.
- Flush nexthops once on multi-nexthop removal (e.g. when device goes
down), another O(n^2) -> O(n) improvement.
- Rehash locally generated traffic to a different nexthop on retransmit
timeout.
- Honor oif when choosing nexthop for locally generated IPv6 traffic.
- Convert TCP Auth Option to crypto library, and drop non-RFC algos.
- Increase subflow limits in MPTCP to 64 and endpoint limit to 256.
- Support MPTCP signaling of IPv6 address + port (ADD_ADDR). We need
to selectively skip reporting of the standard TCP Timestamp option,
because they won't fit into the header space together (12 + 30 > 40).
- Support using bridge neighbor suppression, Duplicate Address
Detection, Gratuitous ARP and unsolicited NA forwarding - in EVPN
deployments, e.g. VXLAN fabrics (IPv4 and IPv6).
- Improve link state reporting for upper netdevs (e.g. macvlan) over
tunnel devices (again, mostly for EVPN deployments).
- Support binding GENEVE tunnels to a local address.
- Speed up UDP tunnel destruction (remove one synchronize_rcu()).
- Support exponential field encoding in multicast (IGMPv3 and MLDv2).
- Support attaching PSP crypto offload to containers (veth, netkit).
- Add a new IPSec Netlink message XFRM_MSG_MIGRATE_STATE that allows
migrating individual IPsec SAs independently of their policies.
The existing XFRM_MSG_MIGRATE is tightly coupled to policy+SA
migration, lacks SPI for unique SA identification, and cannot express
reqid changes or migrate Transport mode selectors. The new interface
identifies the SA via SPI and mark, supports reqid changes, address
family changes, encap removal, and uses an atomic create+install
flow under x->lock to prevent SN/IV reuse during AEAD SA migration.
- Implement GRO/GSO support for PPPoE.
- Convert sockopt callbacks in a number of protocols to iov_iter.
Cross-tree stuff
----------------
- Remove support for Crypto TFM cloning (unblocked after the TCP Auth
Option rework). This feature regressed performance for all crypto API
users, since it changed crypto transformation objects into reference-
-counted objects.
- Add FCrypt-PCBC implementation to rxrpc and remove it from the global
crypto API as obsolete and insecure.
Wireless
--------
- Major rework of station bandwidth handling, fixing issues with lower
capability than AP.
- Cleanups for EMLSR spec issues (drafts differed).
- More Neighbor Awareness Networking (Wi-Fi Aware) work (multicast,
schedule improvements, multi-station etc.)
- Some Ultra High Reliability (UHR) / IEEE 802.11bn (D1.4) work
(e.g. non-primary channel access, UHR DBE support).
- Fine Timing Measurement ranging (i.e. distance measurement) APIs.
Netfilter
---------
- Use per-rule hash initval in nf_conncount. This avoids unnecessary
lock contention with short keys (e.g. conntrack zones) in different
namespaces.
- Various safety improvements, both in packet parsing and object
lifetimes. Notably add refcounts to conntrack timeout policy.
Deletions
---------
- Remove TLS + sockmap integration. TLS wants to pin user pages
to avoid a copy, and sockmap wants to write to the input stream.
More work on this integration is clearly needed, and we can't find
any users (original author admitted that they never deployed it).
- Remove support for TLS offload with TCP Offload Engine (the far
more common opportunistic offload is retained). The locking looks
unfixable (driver sleeps under TCP spin locks) and people from
the vendor that added this are AWOL.
- Remove more ATM code, trying to leave behind only what PPPoATM needs,
AAL5 and br2684 with permanent circuits.
- Remove AppleTalk. Let it join hamradio in our out of tree protocol
graveyard, I mean, repository.
- Disable 32-bit x_tables compatibility (32bit binaries on 64bit kernel)
interface in user namespaces. To be deleted completely, soon.
- Remove 5/10 MHz support from cfg80211/mac80211.
Drivers

A series of updates for the VDSO:
- Remove the redundant CONFIG_GENERIC_TIME_VSYSCALL after converting the
remaining users over.
- Rework and sanitize the MIPS VDSO handling, so it does not handle the
time related VDSO if there is no VDSO capable clocksource available.
Also stop mapping VDSO data pages unconditionally even if there is no
usage possible.

sparc: led: avoid trimming a newline from empty writes
led_proc_write() duplicates up to LED_MAX_LENGTH bytes with
memdup_user_nul() and then unconditionally inspects buf[count - 1] to
strip a trailing newline. A zero-length write therefore reads one byte
before the duplicated buffer.
The previous version rejected empty writes, but empty input already falls
through to the existing default case and turns the LED off like any other
unrecognized string. Preserve that behavior and only skip the newline
trim when there is no input byte to inspect.

Interrupt core code changes:
- Rework of /proc/interrupt handling:
/proc/interrupts was subject to micro optimizations for a long time,
but most of the low hanging fruit was left on the table. This rework
addresses the major time consuming issues:
- Printing a long series of zeros one by one via a format string
instead of counting subsequent zeros and emitting a string
constant.
- Simplify and cache the conditions whether interrupts should be printed
- Use a proper iteration over the interrupt descriptor xarray
instead of walking and testing one by one.
- Provide helper functions for the architecture code to emit the
architecture specific counters
- Convert the counter structure in x86 to an array, which
simplifies the output and add mechanisms to suppress unused
architecture interrupts, which just occupy space for
nothing. Adopt the new core mechanisms.
This adjusts the gdb scripts related to interrupt counter statitics
to work with the new mechanisms.
- Prevent a string overflow in the /proc/irq/$N/ directory name
creation code.

Pull interrupt core updates from Thomas Gleixner:
- Rework of /proc/interrupt handling:
/proc/interrupts was subject to micro optimizations for a long time,
but most of the low hanging fruit was left on the table. This rework
addresses the major time consuming issues:
- Printing a long series of zeros one by one via a format string
instead of counting subsequent zeros and emitting a string
constant.
- Simplify and cache the conditions whether interrupts should be
printed
- Use a proper iteration over the interrupt descriptor xarray
instead of walking and testing one by one.
- Provide helper functions for the architecture code to emit the
architecture specific counters
- Convert the counter structure in x86 to an array, which
simplifies the output and add mechanisms to suppress unused
architecture interrupts, which just occupy space for nothing.
Adopt the new core mechanisms.
This adjusts the gdb scripts related to interrupt counter statistics
to work with the new mechanisms.
- Prevent a string overflow in the /proc/irq/$N/ directory name
creation code.

Merge tag 'vfs-7.2-rc1.misc' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull misc vfs updates from Christian Brauner:
"Features:
- Reduce pipe->mutex contention by pre-allocating pages outside the
lock in anon_pipe_write().
anon_pipe_write() called alloc_page() once per page while holding
pipe->mutex. The allocation can sleep doing direct reclaim and runs
memcg charging, which extends the critical section and stalls any
concurrent reader on the same mutex. Now up to 8 pages are
pre-allocated before the mutex is taken, leftovers are recycled
into the per-pipe tmp_page[] cache before unlock, and any remainder
is released after unlock, keeping the allocator out of the critical
section on both sides. On a writers x readers sweep with 64KB
writes against a 1 MB pipe throughput improves 6-28% and average
write latency drops 5-22%; under memory pressure - when the cost of
holding the mutex across reclaim is highest - throughput improves
21-48% and latency drops 17-33%. The microbenchmark is added to
selftests.
- uaccess/sockptr: fix the ignored_trailing logic in
copy_struct_to_user() to behave as documented and the usize check
in copy_struct_from_sockptr() for user pointers, and add
copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer() and copy_struct_to_sockptr()
helpers for upcoming users (IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT, IPPROTO_QUIC).
- bpf: add a sleepable bpf_real_inode() kfunc that resolves the real
inode backing a dentry via d_real_inode(). On overlayfs the inode
attached to the dentry doesn't carry the underlying device
information; this is used by the filesystem restriction BPF program
that was merged into systemd.
- docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems, motivated by
the maintenance burden abandoned and untestable filesystems impose
on VFS developers, blocking infrastructure work like folio
conversions and iomap migration.
Fixes:
- libfs: set SB_I_NOEXEC and SB_I_NODEV by default in init_pseudo()
and drop the now-redundant assignments in callers. This began as a
one-line dma-buf fix for a path_noexec() warning; a pseudo
filesystem has no reason not to set SB_I_NOEXEC. All init_pseudo()
callers were audited: the only visible effect is on dma-buf where
SB_I_NOEXEC silences the warning.
- Handle set_blocksize() failures in legacy filesystems (bfs, hpfs,
qnx4, jfs, befs, affs, isofs, minix, ntfs3, omfs). Mounting a
device with a sector size > PAGE_SIZE crashed roughly half of them;
the rest had the same missing error handling pattern. Plus a
follow-up releasing the superblock buffer_head when setting the
minix v3 block size fails.
- mount: honour SB_NOUSER in the new mount API.
- fs/fcntl: fix a SOFTIRQ-unsafe lock order in fasync signaling by
switching the process-group paths of send_sigio() and send_sigurg()
from read_lock(&tasklist_lock) to RCU, matching the single-PID
path.
- vfs: add an FS_USERNS_DELEGATABLE flag and set it for NFS, fixing
delegated NFS mounts (fsopen() in a container with the mount
performed by a privileged daemon) that broke when non-init
s_user_ns was tied to FS_USERNS_MOUNT.
- selftests/namespaces: fix a hang in nsid_test where an unreaped
grandchild kept the TAP pipe write-end open, a waitpid(-1) race in
listns_efault_test, and a false FAIL on kernels without listns()
where the tests should SKIP.
- filelock: fix the break_lease() stub signature for
CONFIG_FILE_LOCKING=n.
- init/initramfs_test: wait for the async initramfs unpacking before
running; the test and do_populate_rootfs() share the parser state.
- fs/coredump: reduce redundant log noise in
validate_coredump_safety().
- iomap: pass the correct length to fserror_report_io() in
__iomap_write_begin().
- backing-file: fix the backing_file_open() kerneldoc.
Cleanups:
- initramfs: refactor the cpio hex header parsing to use hex2bin()
instead of the hand-rolled simple_strntoul() which is reverted, and
extend the initramfs KUnit tests to cover header fields with 0x
prefixes.
- Replace __get_free_pages() and friends with kmalloc()/kzalloc()
across quota, proc, ocfs2/dlm, nilfs2, nfs, nfsd, libfs, jfs, jbd2,
isofs, fuse, select, namespace, configfs, binfmt_misc, bfs, and the
do_mounts init code - part of the larger work of replacing page
allocator calls with kmalloc().
- Use clear_and_wake_up_bit() in unlock_buffer() and
journal_end_buffer_io_sync() instead of open-coding the sequence.
- Drop unused VFS exports: unexport drop_super_exclusive(), remove
start_removing_user_path_at(), and fold __start_removing_path()
into start_removing_path().
- fs/read_write: narrow the __kernel_write() export with
EXPORT_SYMBOL_FOR_MODULES().
- vfs: uapi: retire octal and hex constants in favor of (1 << n) for
the O_ flags. Finding a free bit for a new flag across the
architectures was needlessly hard with the mixed bases.
- dcache: add extra sanity checks of dead dentries in dentry_free()
via a new DENTRY_WARN_ONCE() that also prints d_flags.
- iov_iter: use kmemdup_array() in dup_iter() to harden the
allocation against multiplication overflow.
- fs/pipe: write to ->poll_usage only once.
- vfs: remove an always-taken if-branch in find_next_fd().
- dcache: use kmalloc_flex() for struct external_name in __d_alloc().
- namei: use QSTR() instead of QSTR_INIT() in path_pts().
- sync_file_range: delete dead S_ISLNK code.
- Comment fixes: retire a stale comment in fget_task_next() and fix

Merge tag 'vfs-7.2-rc1.openat2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull openat2 updates from Christian Brauner:
"Features:
- Add O_EMPTYPATH to openat(2)/openat2(2). To get an operable file
descriptor from an O_PATH file descriptor it is possible to use
openat(fd, ".", O_DIRECTORY) for directories, but other file types
require going through open("/proc/<pid>/fd/<nr>") and thus depend
on a functioning procfs.
With O_EMPTYPATH an empty path string is accepted and LOOKUP_EMPTY
is set at path resolution time, allowing to reopen the file behind
the file descriptor directly. Selftests are included.
- Add an OPENAT2_REGULAR flag for openat2(2) which refuses to open
anything but regular files with the new EFTYPE error code.
This implements the "ability to only open regular files" feature
requested by userspace via uapi-group.org and protects services
from being redirected to fifos, device nodes, and friends.
All atomic_open implementations were audited for OPENAT2_REGULAR
handling. Explicit checks were added to ceph, gfs2, nfs (v4), and
cifs/smb - these are the filesystems whose atomic_open can
encounter an existing non-regular file and would otherwise call
finish_open() on it or return a misleading error code.
The remaining implementations (9p, fuse, vboxsf, nfs v2/v3) only
call finish_open() on freshly created files and use
finish_no_open() for lookup hits, letting the VFS catch non-regular
files via the do_open() safety net.
Cleanups:
- Migrate the openat2 selftests to the kselftest harness and move
them under selftests/filesystems/. The tests were written in the
early days of selftests' TAP support and the modern kselftest
harness is much easier to follow and maintain. The contents of the
tests are unchanged and the new emptypath tests are ported on top.
- Make the LAST_XXX last-type constants private to fs/namei.c. The
only user outside of fs/namei.c was ksmbd which only needs to know
whether the last component is a regular one, so
vfs_path_parent_lookup() now performs the LAST_NORM check
internally. The ints are replaced with a dedicated enum last_type"

sparc: Avoid -Wunused-but-set-parameter in clear_user_page()
The loop in clear_user_pages() iterates over all pages and calls
clear_user_page() for each of them. During the loop "vaddr" is modified.
However on sparc clear_user() is a macro which does not use "vaddr".
The compiler sees a variable which is modified but never used and emits
a warning for that:
include/linux/highmem.h: In function 'clear_user_pages':
include/linux/highmem.h:234:63: warning: parameter 'vaddr' set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-parameter=]
static inline void clear_user_pages(void *addr, unsigned long vaddr,
Other architectures use an inline function for clear_user_page() which
avoids the warning. This is not possible on sparc, as
sparc_flush_page_to_ram() is not yet declared where clear_user_page() is
defined. Including cacheflush_32.h will trigger recursive and lots of
other issues.
So hide the warning with a cast to (void) instead.
While we are here, do the same for copy_user_page().

crypto: fcrypt - Remove support for FCrypt block cipher
Remove the insecure FCrypt block cipher from the crypto API. Its only user was net/rxrpc/, but now net/rxrpc/ implements it locally. The crypto API implementation is no longer needed. For some additional context: FCrypt was designed in 1988 and is essentially a weakened version of DES. It has the same 56-bit key size as DES, which is easily brute forced. Moreover, it's cryptographically weak and doesn't even provide the intended 56-bit security level. Its author considers it to be a mistake, as well (https://lists.openafs.org/pipermail/openafs-devel/2000-December/005320.html). But fortunately this 1980s-era homebrew block cipher was never adopted outside of net/rxrpc/. So its code can just be kept there. vfs: uapi: retire octal and hex numbers in favor of (1 << n) for O_ flags
A recent build failure[1] exposed the diffculty of working with the
current octal and hex definitions of O_ flags when trying to find a gap
for a new flag. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that O_ flags
may have architectural specific values.
Replace the hex/octal #defines, which are hard to parse when looking for
free bits, with explicit bit shifts like (1 << 11). Also, add comments
that identify which architectures redefine some of the seemingly free
("cursed") bits in uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h. These should not be used to
define new O_ flags (for now, at least).
The translastion was done with Claude Opus 4.8, and verified with a
(non-AI) gawk script. The accounting of which architectures claim
which bit-gaps in uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h is also done by hand.

genirq/proc: Increase default interrupt number precision to four
Quite some architectures have four character wide acronyms for architecture specific interrupts like IPI, NMI, etc. The default precision of printing the Linux device interrupt numbers is three, which causes quite some code to play games with adding or omitting space after the acronym and the colon in order to keep the per CPU numbers properly aligned. Increase the default number precision to four in the core code and get rid of the space games all over the place. This will be used by the upcoming OPENAT2_REGULAR flag support to return a specific error when a path doesn't refer to a regular file. - The 27 patch series "cleanup the RAID5 XOR library" from Christoph
Hellwig is a quite far-reaching cleanup to this code. I can't do better
than to quote Christoph:
The XOR library used for the RAID5 parity is a bit of a mess right
now. The main file sits in crypto/ despite not being cryptography and
not using the crypto API, with the generic implementations sitting in
include/asm-generic and the arch implementations sitting in an asm/
header in theory. The latter doesn't work for many cases, so
architectures often build the code directly into the core kernel, or
create another module for the architecture code.
Change this to a single module in lib/ that also contains the
architecture optimizations, similar to the library work Eric Biggers
has done for the CRC and crypto libraries later. After that it
changes to better calling conventions that allow for smarter
architecture implementations (although none is contained here yet),
and uses static_call to avoid indirection function call overhead.
- The 2 patch series "lib/list_sort: Clean up list_sort() scheduling
workarounds" from Kuan-Wei Chiu cleans up this library code by removing
a hacky thing which was added for UBIFS, which UBIFS doesn't actually
need.
- The 5 patch series "Fix bugs in extract_iter_to_sg()" from Christian
Ehrhardt fixes a few bugs in the scatterlist code, adds in-kernel tests
for the now-fixed bugs and fixes a leak in the test itself.
- The 3 patch series "kdump: Enable LUKS-encrypted dump target support
in ARM64 and PowerPC" from Coiby Xu eenables support of the
LUKS-encrypted device dump target on arm64 and powerpc.
- The 4 patch series "ocfs2: consolidate extent list validation into

extent list fields - cleanup, simplification, robustness. (Kernel test

bpf: Pass bpf_verifier_env to JIT
Pass bpf_verifier_env to bpf_int_jit_compile(). The follow-up patch will use env->insn_aux_data in the JIT stage to detect indirect jump targets. Since bpf_prog_select_runtime() can be called by cbpf and lib/test_bpf.c code without verifier, introduce helper __bpf_prog_select_runtime() to accept the env parameter. Remove the call to bpf_prog_select_runtime() in bpf_prog_load(), and switch to call __bpf_prog_select_runtime() in the verifier, with env variable passed. The original bpf_prog_select_runtime() is preserved for cbpf and lib/test_bpf.c, where env is NULL. Now all constants blinding calls are moved into the verifier, except the cbpf and lib/test_bpf.c cases. The instructions arrays are adjusted by bpf_patch_insn_data() function for normal cases, so there is no need to call adjust_insn_arrays() in bpf_jit_blind_constants(). Remove it. bpf: Move constants blinding out of arch-specific JITs
During the JIT stage, constants blinding rewrites instructions but only rewrites the private instruction copy of the JITed subprog, leaving the global env->prog->insnsi and env->insn_aux_data untouched. This causes a mismatch between subprog instructions and the global state, making it difficult to use the global data in the JIT. To avoid this mismatch, and given that all arch-specific JITs already support constants blinding, move it to the generic verifier code, and switch to rewrite the global env->prog->insnsi with the global states adjusted, as other rewrites in the verifier do. This removes the constants blinding calls in each JIT, which are largely duplicated code across architectures. Since constants blinding is only required for JIT, and there are two JIT entry functions, jit_subprogs() for BPF programs with multiple subprogs and bpf_prog_select_runtime() for programs with no subprogs, move the constants blinding invocation into these two functions. In the verifier path, bpf_patch_insn_data() is used to keep global verifier auxiliary data in sync with patched instructions. A key question is whether this global auxiliary data should be restored on the failure path. Besides instructions, bpf_patch_insn_data() adjusts: - prog->aux->poke_tab - env->insn_array_maps - env->subprog_info - env->insn_aux_data For prog->aux->poke_tab, it is only used by JIT or only meaningful after JIT succeeds, so it does not need to be restored on the failure path. For env->insn_array_maps, when JIT fails, programs using insn arrays are rejected by bpf_insn_array_ready() due to missing JIT addresses. Hence, env->insn_array_maps is only meaningful for JIT and does not need to be restored. For subprog_info, if jit_subprogs fails and CONFIG_BPF_JIT_ALWAYS_ON is not enabled, kernel falls back to interpreter. In this case, env->subprog_info is used to determine subprogram stack depth. So it must be restored on failure. For env->insn_aux_data, it is freed by clear_insn_aux_data() at the end of bpf_check(). Before freeing, clear_insn_aux_data() loops over env->insn_aux_data to release jump targets recorded in it. The loop uses env->prog->len as the array length, but this length no longer matches the actual size of the adjusted env->insn_aux_data array after constants blinding. To address it, a simple approach is to keep insn_aux_data as adjusted after failure, since it will be freed shortly, and record its actual size for the loop in clear_insn_aux_data(). But since clear_insn_aux_data() uses the same index to loop over both env->prog->insnsi and env->insn_aux_data, this approach results in incorrect index for the insnsi array. So an alternative approach is adopted: clone the original env->insn_aux_data before blinding and restore it after failure, similar to env->prog. For classic BPF programs, constants blinding works as before since it is still invoked from bpf_prog_select_runtime(). Networking changes for 7.1.
Core & protocols
----------------
- Support HW queue leasing, allowing containers to be granted access
to HW queues for zero-copy operations and AF_XDP.
- Number of code moves to help the compiler with inlining.
Avoid output arguments for returning drop reason where possible.
- Rework drop handling within qdiscs to include more metadata
about the reason and dropping qdisc in the tracepoints.
- Remove the rtnl_lock use from IP Multicast Routing.
- Pack size information into the Rx Flow Steering table pointer
itself. This allows making the table itself a flat array of u32s,
thus making the table allocation size a power of two.
- Report TCP delayed ack timer information via socket diag.
- Add ip_local_port_step_width sysctl to allow distributing the randomly
selected ports more evenly throughout the allowed space.
- Add support for per-route tunsrc in IPv6 segment routing.
- Start work of switching sockopt handling to iov_iter.
- Improve dynamic recvbuf sizing in MPTCP, limit burstiness and avoid
buffer size drifting up.
- Support MSG_EOR in MPTCP.
- Add stp_mode attribute to the bridge driver for STP mode selection.
This addresses concerns about call_usermodehelper() usage.
- Remove UDP-Lite support (as announced in 2023).
- Remove support for building IPv6 as a module.
Remove the now unnecessary function calling indirection.
Cross-tree stuff
----------------
- Move Michael MIC code from generic crypto into wireless,
it's considered insecure but some WiFi networks still need it.
Netfilter
---------
- Switch nft_fib_ipv6 module to no longer need temporary dst_entry
object allocations by using fib6_lookup() + RCU.
Florian W reports this gets us ~13% higher packet rate.
- Convert IPVS's global __ip_vs_mutex to per-net service_mutex and
switch the service tables to be per-net. Convert some code that
walks the service lists to use RCU instead of the service_mutex.
- Add more opinionated input validation to lower security exposure.
- Make IPVS hash tables to be per-netns and resizable.
Wireless
--------
- Finished assoc frame encryption/EPPKE/802.1X-over-auth.
- Radar detection improvements.
- Add 6 GHz incumbent signal detection APIs.
- Multi-link support for FILS, probe response templates and
client probing.
- New APIs and mac80211 support for NAN (Neighbor Aware Networking,
aka Wi-Fi Aware) so less work must be in firmware.
Driver API
----------
- Add numerical ID for devlink instances (to avoid having to create
fake bus/device pairs just to have an ID). Support shared devlink
instances which span multiple PFs.
- Add standard counters for reporting pause storm events
(implement in mlx5 and fbnic).
- Add configuration API for completion writeback buffering
(implement in mana).
- Support driver-initiated change of RSS context sizes.
- Support DPLL monitoring input frequency (implement in zl3073x).
- Support per-port resources in devlink (implement in mlx5).
Misc
----
- Expand the YAML spec for Netfilter.

crypto: Remove michael_mic from crypto_shash API
Remove the "michael_mic" crypto_shash algorithm, since it's no longer used. Its only users were wireless drivers, which have now been converted to use the michael_mic() function instead. It makes sense that no other users ever appeared: Michael MIC is an insecure algorithm that is specific to WPA TKIP, which itself was an interim security solution to replace the broken WEP standard. sparc: use vmemmap_populate_hugepages for vmemmap_populate
Change sparc's implementation of vmemmap_populate() using vmemmap_populate_hugepages() to streamline the code. Another benefit is that it allows us to eliminate the external declarations of vmemmap_p?d_populate functions and convert them to static functions. Since vmemmap_populate_hugepages may fallback to vmemmap_populate- _basepages, which differs from sparc's original implementation. During the v1 discussion with Mike Rapoport, sparc uses base pages in the kernel page tables, so it should be able to use them in vmemmap as well. Consequently, no additional special handling is required. 1. In the SPARC architecture, reimplement vmemmap_populate using vmemmap_populate_hugepages. 2. Allow the SPARC arch to fallback to vmemmap_populate_basepages(), when vmemmap_alloc_block returns NULL. mm: cache struct page for empty_zero_page and return it from ZERO_PAGE()
For most architectures every invocation of ZERO_PAGE() does virt_to_page(empty_zero_page). But empty_zero_page is in BSS and it is enough to get its struct page once at initialization time and then use it whenever a zero page should be accessed. Add yet another __zero_page variable that will be initialized as virt_to_page(empty_zero_page) for most architectures in a weak arch_setup_zero_pages() function. For architectures that use colored zero pages (MIPS and s390) rename their setup_zero_pages() to arch_setup_zero_pages() and make it global rather than static. For architectures that cannot use virt_to_page() for BSS (arm64 and sparc64) add override of arch_setup_zero_pages(). arch, mm: consolidate empty_zero_page
Reduce 22 declarations of empty_zero_page to 3 and 23 declarations of ZERO_PAGE() to 4. Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page). Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement colored zero page (MIPS and s390). ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static inline causes severe pain in header dependencies. For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy: * alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only * arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact. * m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock, although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS will work fine. * sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE() but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to empty_zero_page. * sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot. Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic empty_zero_page. * hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page /* A handy thing to have if one has the RAM. Declared in head.S */ that unfortunately had to go :) Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20260211103141.3215197-4-rppt@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport (Microsoft) <rppt@kernel.org> Acked-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> [parisc] Tested-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> [parisc] Reviewed-by: Christophe Leroy (CS GROUP) <chleroy@kernel.org> Acked-by: Dave Hansen <dave.hansen@linux.intel.com> Acked-by: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Acked-by: Magnus Lindholm <linmag7@gmail.com> [alpha] Acked-by: Dinh Nguyen <dinguyen@kernel.org> [nios2] Acked-by: Andreas Larsson <andreas@gaisler.com> [sparc] Acked-by: David Hildenbrand (Arm) <david@kernel.org> Acked-by: Liam R. The "small" argument to do_sys_ftruncate indicates if > 32-bit size should be reject, but all the arch-specific compat ftruncate64 implementations get this wrong. Merge do_sys_ftruncate and ksys_ftruncate, replace the integer as boolean small flag with a descriptive one about LFS semantics, and use it correctly in the architecture-specific ftruncate64 implementations.
