Patch series "kdump: crashkernel reservation from CMA", v5.
This series implements a way to reserve additional crash kernel memory
using CMA.
Currently, all the memory for the crash kernel is not usable by the 1st
(production) kernel. It is also unmapped so that it can't be corrupted by
the fault that will eventually trigger the crash. This makes sense for
the memory actually used by the kexec-loaded crash kernel image and initrd
and the data prepared during the load (vmcoreinfo, ...). However, the
reserved space needs to be much larger than that to provide enough
run-time memory for the crash kernel and the kdump userspace. Estimating
the amount of memory to reserve is difficult. Being too careful makes
kdump likely to end in OOM, being too generous takes even more memory from
the production system. Also, the reservation only allows reserving a
single contiguous block (or two with the "low" suffix). I've seen systems
where this fails because the physical memory is fragmented.
By reserving additional crashkernel memory from CMA, the main crashkernel
reservation can be just large enough to fit the kernel and initrd image,
minimizing the memory taken away from the production system. Most of the
run-time memory for the crash kernel will be memory previously available
to userspace in the production system. As this memory is no longer
wasted, the reservation can be done with a generous margin, making kdump
more reliable. Kernel memory that we need to preserve for dumping is
normally not allocated from CMA, unless it is explicitly allocated as
movable. Currently this is only the case for memory ballooning and zswap.
Such movable memory will be missing from the vmcore. User data is
typically not dumped by makedumpfile. When dumping of user data is
intended this new CMA reservation cannot be used.
There are five patches in this series:
The first adds a new ",cma" suffix to the recenly introduced generic
crashkernel parsing code. parse_crashkernel() takes one more argument to
store the cma reservation size.
The second patch implements reserve_crashkernel_cma() which performs the
reservation. If the requested size is not available in a single range,
multiple smaller ranges will be reserved.
The third patch updates Documentation/, explicitly mentioning the
potential DMA corruption of the CMA-reserved memory.
The fourth patch adds a short delay before booting the kdump kernel,
allowing pending DMA transfers to finish.
The fifth patch enables the functionality for x86 as a proof of
concept. There are just three things every arch needs to do:
- call reserve_crashkernel_cma()
- include the CMA-reserved ranges in the physical memory map
- exclude the CMA-reserved ranges from the memory available
through /proc/vmcore by excluding them from the vmcoreinfo
PT_LOAD ranges.
Adding other architectures is easy and I can do that as soon as this
series is merged.
With this series applied, specifying
crashkernel=100M craskhernel=1G,cma
on the command line will make a standard crashkernel reservation
of 100M, where kexec will load the kernel and initrd.
An additional 1G will be reserved from CMA, still usable by the production
system. The crash kernel will have 1.1G memory available. The 100M can
be reliably predicted based on the size of the kernel and initrd.
The new cma suffix is completely optional. When no
crashkernel=size,cma is specified, everything works as before.
This patch (of 5):
Add a new cma_size parameter to parse_crashkernel(). When not NULL, call
__parse_crashkernel to parse the CMA reservation size from
"crashkernel=size,cma" and store it in cma_size.
Set cma_size to NULL in all calls to parse_crashkernel().

On MIPS architecture with CPS-based SMP support, all CPU cores in the
same cluster run at the same frequency since they share the same L2
cache, requiring a fixed CPU/L2 cache ratio.
This allows to implement calibrate_delay_is_known(), which will return
0 (triggering calibration) only for the primary CPU of each
cluster. For other CPUs, we can simply reuse the value from their
cluster's primary CPU core.
With the introduction of this patch, a configuration running 32 cores
spread across two clusters sees a significant reduction in boot time
by approximately 600 milliseconds.

The initial implementation of this function goes through all the CPUs
in a cluster to determine if the current CPU is the only one
running. This process occurs every time the function is called.
However, during boot, we already perform this task, so let's take
advantage of this opportunity to create and fill a CPU bitmask that
can be easily and efficiently used later.
This patch modifies the function to allow providing the first
available online CPU when one already exists, which is necessary for
delay CPU calibration optimization.

It is possible that MMID is supported at the CPU level, but its
integration in a SoC prevents its usage. For instance, if the
System-level Interconnect (also known as Network on Chip) does not
support global invalidation, then the MMID feature is not usable. The
current implementation of MMID relies on the GINV* instructions.
This patch allows the disabling of MMID based on a device tree
property, as this issue cannot be detected at runtime.
MMID is set up very early during the boot process, even before device
tree data can be accessed. Therefore, when we determine whether MMID
needs to be disabled, some MMID setup has already been performed for
the boot CPU. Consequently, we must revert the MMID setup on the first
CPU before disabling the feature for the subsequent CPUs that will be
initialized later.

Not all tasks have an ABI associated or vDSO mapped,
for example kthreads never do.
If such a task ever ends up calling stack_top(), it will derefence the

Introduce file_getattr() and file_setattr() syscalls to manipulate inode
extended attributes. The syscalls takes pair of file descriptor and
pathname. Then it operates on inode opened accroding to openat()
semantics. The struct file_attr is passed to obtain/change extended
attributes.
This is an alternative to FS_IOC_FSSETXATTR ioctl with a difference
that file don't need to be open as we can reference it with a path
instead of fd. By having this we can manipulated inode extended
attributes not only on regular files but also on special ones. This
is not possible with FS_IOC_FSSETXATTR ioctl as with special files
we can not call ioctl() directly on the filesystem inode using fd.
This patch adds two new syscalls which allows userspace to get/set
extended inode attributes on special files by using parent directory
and a path - *at() like syscall.

In the calibration delay process, some resources are shared, so it's
better to move it after the parallel execution part. Thanks to the
patch optimizing CPU delay calibration, this change has no impact on
the boot time improvements gained from CPU parallel boot.

The throttle support has been added in the generic code. Remove
the driver-specific throttle support.
Besides the throttle, perf_event_overflow may return true because of
event_limit. It already does an inatomic event disable. The pmu->stop
is not required either.

When CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PARALLEL is enabled, the code executing before
cpuhp_ap_sync_alive() is executed in parallel, while after it is
serialized. The functions set_cpu_sibling_map() and set_cpu_core_map()
were not designed to be executed in parallel, so by moving the
cpuhp_ap_sync_alive() before cpuhp_ap_sync_alive(), we then ensure
they will be called serialized.
The measurement done on EyeQ5 did not show any relevant boot time
increase after applying this patch.

MIPS re-enables interrupts on its idle routine and performs
a TIF_NEED_RESCHED check afterwards before putting the CPU to sleep.
The IRQs firing between the check and the 'wait' instruction may set the
TIF_NEED_RESCHED flag. In order to deal with this possible race, IRQs
interrupting __r4k_wait() rollback their return address to the
beginning of __r4k_wait() so that TIF_NEED_RESCHED is checked
again before going back to sleep.
However idle IRQs can also queue timers that may require a tick
reprogramming through a new generic idle loop iteration but those timers
would go unnoticed here because __r4k_wait() only checks
TIF_NEED_RESCHED. It doesn't check for pending timers.
Fix this with fast-forwarding idle IRQs return address to the end of the
idle routine instead of the beginning, so that the generic idle loop
handles both TIF_NEED_RESCHED and pending timers.
CONFIG_CPU_MICROMIPS has been removed along with the nop instructions.
There, NOPs are 2 byte in size, so change the code with 3 _ssnop which are
always 4 byte and remove the ifdef. Added ehb to make sure the hazard
is always cleared.

and causes inconsistencies over and over.
There is no real technical reason for architecture specific layouts and
implementations. The architecture specific details can easily be

- Mount notifications
The day has come where we finally provide a new api to listen for
mount topology changes outside of /proc/<pid>/mountinfo. A mount
namespace file descriptor can be supplied and registered with
fanotify to listen for mount topology changes.
Currently notifications for mount, umount and moving mounts are
generated. The generated notification record contains the unique
mount id of the mount.
The listmount() and statmount() api can be used to query detailed
information about the mount using the received unique mount id.
This allows userspace to figure out exactly how the mount topology
changed without having to generating diffs of /proc/<pid>/mountinfo
in userspace.
- Support O_PATH file descriptors with FSCONFIG_SET_FD in the new mount
api
- Support detached mounts in overlayfs
Since last cycle we support specifying overlayfs layers via file
descriptors. However, we don't allow detached mounts which means
userspace cannot user file descriptors received via
open_tree(OPEN_TREE_CLONE) and fsmount() directly. They have to
attach them to a mount namespace via move_mount() first.
This is cumbersome and means they have to undo mounts via umount().
Allow them to directly use detached mounts.
- Allow to retrieve idmappings with statmount
Currently it isn't possible to figure out what idmapping has been
attached to an idmapped mount. Add an extension to statmount() which
allows to read the idmapping from the mount.
- Allow creating idmapped mounts from mounts that are already idmapped
So far it isn't possible to allow the creation of idmapped mounts
from already idmapped mounts as this has significant lifetime
implications. Make the creation of idmapped mounts atomic by allow to
pass struct mount_attr together with the open_tree_attr() system call
allowing to solve these issues without complicating VFS lookup in any
way.
The system call has in general the benefit that creating a detached
mount and applying mount attributes to it becomes an atomic operation
for userspace.
- Add a way to query statmount() for supported options

Some CM3.5 devices incorrectly report that hardware cache
initialization has completed, and also claim to support hardware cache
initialization when they don't actually do so. This commit fixes this
issue by retrieving the correct information from the device tree and
allowing the system to bypass the hardware cache initialization
step. Instead, it relies on manual operation. As a result, multi-user
support is now possible for these CPUs.

Some information that should be retrieved at runtime for the Coherence
Manager can be either absent or wrong. This patch allows checking if
some of this information is available from the device tree and updates
the internal variable accordingly.
For now, only the compatible string associated with the broken HCI is
being retrieved.

In preparation for supporting multi-cluster systems, introduce a struct
cluster_boot_config as an extra layer in the boot configuration
maintained by the MIPS Coherent Processing System (CPS) SMP
implementation. For now only one struct cluster_boot_config will be
allocated & we'll simply defererence its core_config field to find the
struct core_boot_config array which can be used to boot as usual.

The pm-cps code has up until now used per-CPU variables indexed by core,
rather than CPU number, in order to share data amongst sibling CPUs (ie.
VPs/threads in a core). This works fine for single cluster systems, but
with multi-cluster systems a core number is no longer unique in the
system, leading to sharing between CPUs that are not actually siblings.
Avoid this issue by using per-CPU variables as they are more generally
used - ie. access them using CPU numbers rather than core numbers.
Sharing between siblings is then accomplished by:
- Assigning the same pointer to entries for each sibling CPU for the
nc_asm_enter & ready_count variables, which allow this by virtue of
being per-CPU pointers.
- Indexing by the first CPU set in a CPUs cpu_sibling_map in the case
of pm_barrier, for which we can't use the previous approach because
the per-CPU variable is not a pointer.

We have several places across the kernel where we want to access another
task's syscall arguments, such as ptrace(2), seccomp(2), etc., by making
a call to syscall_get_arguments().
This works for register arguments right away by accessing the task's
`regs' member of `struct pt_regs', however for stack arguments seen with
32-bit/o32 kernels things are more complicated. Technically they ought
to be obtained from the user stack with calls to an access_remote_vm(),
but we have an easier way available already.
So as to be able to access syscall stack arguments as regular function
arguments following the MIPS calling convention we copy them over from
the user stack to the kernel stack in arch/mips/kernel/scall32-o32.S, in
handle_sys(), to the current stack frame's outgoing argument space at
the top of the stack, which is where the handler called expects to see
its incoming arguments. This area is also pointed at by the `pt_regs'
pointer obtained by task_pt_regs().
Make the o32 stack argument space a proper member of `struct pt_regs'
then, by renaming the existing member from `pad0' to `args' and using
generated offsets to access the space. No functional change though.
With the change in place the o32 kernel stack frame layout at the entry
to a syscall handler invoked by handle_sys() is therefore as follows:

the psABI for the compiler to spill the incoming arguments from $a0-$a3
registers (which it sometimes does according to its needs) and the next
4 frame slots designated by the psABI for any stack function arguments

at as reqired and where permitted.

Add open_tree_attr() which allow to atomically create a detached mount
tree and set mount options on it. If OPEN_TREE_CLONE is used this will
allow the creation of a detached mount with a new set of mount options
without it ever being exposed to userspace without that set of mount
options applied.

arch/mips/Kconfig selects HAVE_ARCH_SECCOMP_FILTER so syscall_trace_enter()
can just use __secure_computing(NULL) and rely on populate_seccomp_data(sd)
and "sd == NULL" checks in __secure_computing(sd) paths.
With the change above syscall_trace_enter() can just use secure_computing()
and avoid #ifdef + test_thread_flag(TIF_SECCOMP). CONFIG_GENERIC_ENTRY is
not defined, so test_syscall_work(SECCOMP) will check TIF_SECCOMP.

Before SLUB initialization, various subsystems used memblock_alloc to
allocate memory. In most cases, when memory allocation fails, an
immediate panic is required. To simplify this behavior and reduce
repetitive checks, introduce `memblock_alloc_or_panic`. This function
ensures that memory allocation failures result in a panic automatically,
improving code readability and consistency across subsystems that require
this behavior.

Patch series "mm: update mips to use do_mmap(), make mmap_region()
internal".
Currently the only user of mmap_region() outside of the memory management
code is the MIPS VDSO implementation.
This uses mmap_region() to map a 'delay slot emulation page' at the top of
the stack which is read-only and executable.
This mapping requires that an already-acquired mmap write lock is utilised
and that uffd and populate logic is ignored. This rules out vm_mmap(),
however do_mmap() fits the bill.
Adapt this code to use do_mmap() and then once done, make mmap_region()
internal and userland testable, and avoid any other uses of mmap_region(),
which is absolutely and strictly an internal mm function which bypasses a
great number of checks and logic.
This patch (of 2):
mmap_region() is an internal memory management implementation detail that
is not intended to be used outside of the memory management subsystem.
Map the delay slot emulation page using do_mmap() which makes use of the
already-held mmap write lock and bypasses unneeded populate and
userfaultfd logic.
This should have the precise same behaviour as the existing logic.

The commit 275f22148e ("ipc: rename old-style shmctl/semctl/msgctl
syscalls") switched various architectures to use sys_old_*ctl() with
ipc_parse_version, including mips n32/n64. However, for mips o32, commit
0d6040d468 ("arch: add split IPC system calls where needed") added
separate IPC syscalls without properly using the old-style handlers.
This causes applications using uClibc-ng to fail with -EINVAL when
calling semctl/shmctl/msgctl with IPC_64 flag, as uClibc-ng uses the
syscall numbers from kernel headers to determine whether to use the IPC
multiplexer or split syscalls. In contrast, glibc is unaffected as it
uses a unified feature test macro __ASSUME_DIRECT_SYSVIPC_SYSCALLS
(disabled for mips-o32) to make this decision.
Fix this by switching the o32 ABI entries for semctl, shmctl and msgctl
to use the old-style handlers, matching the behavior of other
architectures and fixing compatibility with uClibc-ng.

CP0 register 26 is used as ECC register for legacy cores, but newer
cores (MIPS32/MIPS64) use it as an ErrCtl register. Since the kernel only
uses CP0 26 as ErrCtl register rename the access functions to the more
fitting name.

The VDSO data page handling is architecture specific for historical
reasons, but there is no real technical reason to do so.
Aside of that VDSO data has become a dump ground for various mechanisms
and fail to provide a clear separation of the functionalities.
Clean this up by:
* consolidating the VDSO page data by getting rid of architecture
specific warts especially in x86 and PowerPC.
* removing the last includes of header files which are pulling in other
headers outside of the VDSO namespace.
* seperating timekeeping and other VDSO data accordingly.
Further consolidation of the VDSO page handling is done in subsequent
changes scheduled for the next merge window.
This also lays the ground for expanding the VDSO time getters for
independent PTP clocks in a generic way without making every architecture
add support seperately.

MIPS: export __cmpxchg_small()
While most MIPS64 CPUs use 32-bit values for their VP Local Reset
Exception Base registers, some I6500 CPUs can utilize a 64-bit value,
allowing addressing up to 47 bits of physical memory.
For the EyeQ6H CPU, where physical memory addresses exceed the 4GB
limit, utilizing this feature is mandatory to enable SMP support.
Unfortunately, there is no way to detect this capability based solely
on the ID of the CPU. According to Imagination, which designed the
CPU, the only reliable method is to fill the reset base field with
0xFF and then read back its value. If the upper part of the read-back
value is zero, it indicates that the address space is limited to 32
bits.

__pa() is only intended to be used for linear map addresses and using
it for initial_boot_params which is in fixmap for arm64 will give an
incorrect value. Hence save the physical address when it is known at
boot time when calling early_init_dt_scan for arm64 and use it at kexec
time instead of converting the virtual address using __pa().
Note that arm64 doesn't need the FDT region reserved in the DT as the
kernel explicitly reserves the passed in FDT. Therefore, only a debug
warning is fixed with this change.

Since the generic VDSO clock mode storage is used, this header file is
unused and can be removed.

Loongson64 C and G processors have EXTIMER feature which
is conflicting with CP0 counter.
Although the processor resets in EXTIMER disabled & INTIMER
enabled mode, which is compatible with MIPS CP0 compare, firmware
may attempt to enable EXTIMER and interfere CP0 compare.
Set timer mode back to MIPS compatible mode to fix booting on
systems with such firmware before we have an actual driver for
EXTIMER.

When the CM block migrated from CM2.5 to CM3.0, the address offset for
the Global CSR Access Privilege register was modified. We saw this in
the "MIPS64 I6500 Multiprocessing System Programmer's Guide," it is
stated that "the Global CSR Access Privilege register is located at
offset 0x0120" in section 5.4. It is at least the same for I6400.
This fix allows to use the VP cores in SMP mode if the reset values
were modified by the bootloader.

Implement ieee754 NAN2008 emulation mode.
When this mode is enabled, kernel will accept ELF file
compiled for both NaN 2008 and NaN legacy, but if hardware
does not have capability to match ELF's NaN mode, __own_fpu
will fail for corresponding thread and fpuemu will then kick
in.
This mode trade performance for correctness, while maintaining
support for both NaN mode regardless of hardware capability.
It is useful for multilib installation that have both types
of binary exist in system.

This patch introduces a couple of utility functions which help later
patches with introducing support for multi-cluster systems.
- mips_cps_multicluster_cpus() allows its caller to determine whether
the system includes CPUs spread across multiple clusters. This is
useful because in some cases behaviour can be more optimal taking
this knowledge into account. The means by which we check this is
dependent upon the way we probe CPUs & assign their numbers, so
keeping this knowledge confined here in arch/mips/ seems appropriate.
- mips_cps_first_online_in_cluster() allows its caller to determine
whether it is running upon the first CPU online within its cluster.
This information is useful in cases where some cluster-wide
configuration may need to occur, but should not be repeated if
another CPU in the cluster is already online. Similarly to the above
this is determined based upon knowledge of CPU numbering so it makes
sense to keep that knowledge in arch/mips/. The function is defined
in mips-cm.c rather than in asm/mips-cps.h in order to allow us to
use asm/cpu-info.h & linux/smp.h without encountering an include
nightmare.

The original sync-r4k did a good job on reducing jitter by determine
the "next time value", but it has a limitation that when synchronization
being performed too many times due to high core count or CPU hotplug,
the timewrap on CPU0 will become unaccpetable.
Rework the mechanism based on latest x86 tsc_sync. (It seems like
the original implementation is based on tsc_sync at that time,
so it's just a refresh.) To improve overall performance.
Tesed on Loongson64, Boston, QEMU.

When we have more than one CPU in system, counter synchronisation
overhead can lead to a scenario that sched_clock goes backward when
being read from different CPUs.
This is accommodated by CONFIG_HAVE_UNSTABLE_SCHED_CLOCK, but it's
unavailable on 32bit kernel.
We don't want to risk sched_clock correctness, so if we have multiple
CPU in system and CONFIG_HAVE_UNSTABLE_SCHED_CLOCK is not set, we just
don't use counter as sched_clock source.

behaviour on wait.
Set CLOCK_SOURCE_MUST_VERIFY and CLOCK_SOURCE_VERIFY_PERCPU,

Increase frequency addend dividend to 10000000 (10MHz) to
reasonably accommodate multi GHz level mips_hpt_frequency.
Cap rating of csrc-r4k into 299 to ensure it doesn't go into
"Desired" range, given all the drama we have with CP0 count
registers (SMP sync, behaviour on wait etc).

The data RAC is left disabled by the bootloader in some SoCs, at least in
the core it boots from.
Enabling this feature increases the performance up to +30% depending on the
task.

Rework the handling of the CBR address and cache it. This address
doesn't change and can be cached instead of reading the register every
time.
This is in preparation of permitting to tweak the CBR address in DT with
broken SoC or bootloader.
bmips_cbr_addr is defined in setup.c for each arch to keep compatibility
with legacy brcm47xx/brcm63xx and generic BMIPS target.

Using sys_io_pgetevents() as the entry point for compat mode tasks
works almost correctly, but misses the sign extension for the min_nr
and nr arguments.
This was addressed on parisc by switching to
compat_sys_io_pgetevents_time64() in commit 6431e92fc8 ("parisc:
io_pgetevents_time64() needs compat syscall in 32-bit compat mode"),
as well as by using more sophisticated system call wrappers on x86 and
s390. However, arm64, mips, powerpc, sparc and riscv still have the
same bug.
Change all of them over to use compat_sys_io_pgetevents_time64()

This is almost compatible, but passing a negative offset should result
in a EINVAL error, but on mips o32 compat mode would seek to a large
32-bit byte offset.
Use compat_sys_lseek() to correctly sign-extend the argument.

Patch series "Introduce mseal", v10.
This patchset proposes a new mseal() syscall for the Linux kernel.
In a nutshell, mseal() protects the VMAs of a given virtual memory range
against modifications, such as changes to their permission bits.
Modern CPUs support memory permissions, such as the read/write (RW) and
no-execute (NX) bits. Linux has supported NX since the release of kernel
version 2.6.8 in August 2004 [1]. The memory permission feature improves
the security stance on memory corruption bugs, as an attacker cannot
simply write to arbitrary memory and point the code to it. The memory
must be marked with the X bit, or else an exception will occur.
Internally, the kernel maintains the memory permissions in a data
structure called VMA (vm_area_struct). mseal() additionally protects the
VMA itself against modifications of the selected seal type.
Memory sealing is useful to mitigate memory corruption issues where a
corrupted pointer is passed to a memory management system. For example,
such an attacker primitive can break control-flow integrity guarantees
since read-only memory that is supposed to be trusted can become writable
or .text pages can get remapped. Memory sealing can automatically be
applied by the runtime loader to seal .text and .rodata pages and
applications can additionally seal security critical data at runtime. A
similar feature already exists in the XNU kernel with the
VM_FLAGS_PERMANENT [3] flag and on OpenBSD with the mimmutable syscall
[4]. Also, Chrome wants to adopt this feature for their CFI work [2] and
this patchset has been designed to be compatible with the Chrome use case.
Two system calls are involved in sealing the map: mmap() and mseal().
The new mseal() is an syscall on 64 bit CPU, and with following signature:

addr/len: memory range.
flags: reserved.
mseal() blocks following operations for the given memory range.
1> Unmapping, moving to another location, and shrinking the size,
via munmap() and mremap(), can leave an empty space, therefore can
be replaced with a VMA with a new set of attributes.
2> Moving or expanding a different VMA into the current location,
via mremap().
3> Modifying a VMA via mmap(MAP_FIXED).
4> Size expansion, via mremap(), does not appear to pose any specific
risks to sealed VMAs. It is included anyway because the use case is
unclear. In any case, users can rely on merging to expand a sealed VMA.
5> mprotect() and pkey_mprotect().
6> Some destructive madvice() behaviors (e.g. MADV_DONTNEED) for anonymous
memory, when users don't have write permission to the memory. Those
behaviors can alter region contents by discarding pages, effectively a
memset(0) for anonymous memory.
The idea that inspired this patch comes from Stephen Röttger’s work in
V8 CFI [5]. Chrome browser in ChromeOS will be the first user of this
API.
Indeed, the Chrome browser has very specific requirements for sealing,
which are distinct from those of most applications. For example, in the
case of libc, sealing is only applied to read-only (RO) or read-execute
(RX) memory segments (such as .text and .RELRO) to prevent them from
becoming writable, the lifetime of those mappings are tied to the lifetime
of the process.
Chrome wants to seal two large address space reservations that are managed
by different allocators. The memory is mapped RW- and RWX respectively
but write access to it is restricted using pkeys (or in the future ARM
permission overlay extensions). The lifetime of those mappings are not
tied to the lifetime of the process, therefore, while the memory is
sealed, the allocators still need to free or discard the unused memory.
For example, with madvise(DONTNEED).
However, always allowing madvise(DONTNEED) on this range poses a security
risk. For example if a jump instruction crosses a page boundary and the
second page gets discarded, it will overwrite the target bytes with zeros
and change the control flow. Checking write-permission before the discard
operation allows us to control when the operation is valid. In this case,
the madvise will only succeed if the executing thread has PKEY write
permissions and PKRU changes are protected in software by control-flow
integrity.
Although the initial version of this patch series is targeting the Chrome
browser as its first user, it became evident during upstream discussions
that we would also want to ensure that the patch set eventually is a
complete solution for memory sealing and compatible with other use cases.
The specific scenario currently in mind is glibc's use case of loading and
sealing ELF executables. To this end, Stephen is working on a change to
glibc to add sealing support to the dynamic linker, which will seal all
non-writable segments at startup. Once this work is completed, all
applications will be able to automatically benefit from these new
protections.

MM perf benchmarks
==================
This patch adds a loop in the mprotect/munmap/madvise(DONTNEED) to
check the VMAs’ sealing flag, so that no partial update can be made,
when any segment within the given memory range is sealed.
To measure the performance impact of this loop, two tests are developed.

The first is measuring the time taken for a particular system call,
by using clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC). The second is using
PERF_COUNT_HW_REF_CPU_CYCLES (exclude user space). Both tests have
similar results.
The tests have roughly below sequence:

madvise: added 33-50 ns in time, or 70-110 in cpu cycle, per vma.
In comparison to mseal, which adds 20-40 ns or 50-100 CPU cycles, the
increase from 5.10 to 6.8 is significantly larger, approximately ten times
greater for munmap and mprotect.
When I discuss the mm performance with Brian Makin, an engineer who worked
on performance, it was brought to my attention that such performance
benchmarks, which measuring millions of mm syscall in a tight loop, may
not accurately reflect real-world scenarios, such as that of a database
service. Also this is tested using a single HW and ChromeOS, the data
from another HW or distribution might be different. It might be best to
take this data with a grain of salt.

Several architectures override module_alloc() only to define address
range for code allocations different than VMALLOC address space.
Provide a generic implementation in execmem that uses the parameters for
address space ranges, required alignment and page protections provided
by architectures.
The architectures must fill execmem_info structure and implement
execmem_arch_setup() that returns a pointer to that structure. This way the
execmem initialization won't be called from every architecture, but rather
from a central place, namely a core_initcall() in execmem.
The execmem provides execmem_alloc() API that wraps __vmalloc_node_range()
with the parameters defined by the architectures. If an architecture does
not implement execmem_arch_setup(), execmem_alloc() will fall back to
module_alloc().

Kbuild conventionally uses $(obj)/ for generated files, and $(src)/ for
checked-in source files. It is merely a convention without any functional
difference. In fact, $(obj) and $(src) are exactly the same, as defined
in scripts/Makefile.build:
src := $(obj)
When the kernel is built in a separate output directory, $(src) does
not accurately reflect the source directory location. While Kbuild
resolves this discrepancy by specifying VPATH=$(srctree) to search for
source files, it does not cover all cases. For example, when adding a
header search path for local headers, -I$(srctree)/$(src) is typically
passed to the compiler.
This introduces inconsistency between upstream and downstream Makefiles
because $(src) is used instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for the latter.
To address this inconsistency, this commit changes the semantics of
$(src) so that it always points to the directory in the source tree.
Going forward, the variables used in Makefiles will have the following
meanings:
$(obj) - directory in the object tree
$(src) - directory in the source tree (changed by this commit)
$(objtree) - the top of the kernel object tree
$(srctree) - the top of the kernel source tree
Consequently, $(srctree)/$(src) in upstream Makefiles need to be replaced
with $(src).

thread_info.syscall is used by syscall_get_nr to supply syscall nr
over a thread stack frame.
Previously, thread_info.syscall is only saved at syscall_trace_enter
when syscall tracing is enabled. However rest of the kernel code do
expect syscall_get_nr to be available without syscall tracing. The
previous design breaks collect_syscall.
Move saving process to syscall entry to fix it.

Based on the design pattern utilized in the CM GCR base address getter
implementation, the platform-specific code is capable to re-define the
getter and re-use the weakly defined initial version. But since the
pattern hasn't been used for over 10 years and another similar case (CM
L2-sync only base address getter) has just been fixed, let's unify the
interface and convert it to a more traditional single weakly defined
method: mips_cm_phys_base() (see the link below for the discussion around
this).

The __mips_cm_l2sync_phys_base() and mips_cm_l2sync_phys_base() couple was
introduced in commit 9f98f3dd0c ("MIPS: Add generic CM probe & access
code") where the former method was a weak implementation of the later
function. Such design pattern permitted to re-define the original method
and to use the weak implementation in the new function. A similar approach
was introduced in the framework of another arch-specific programmable
interface: mips_cm_phys_base() and __mips_cm_phys_base(). The only
difference is that the underscored method of the later couple was declared
in the "asm/mips-cm.h" header file, but it wasn't done for the CM L2-sync
methods in the subject. Due to the missing global function declaration
the "missing prototype" warning was spotted in the framework of the commit
9a2036724c ("mips: mark local function static if possible") and fixed
just be re-qualifying the weak method as static. Doing that broke what was
originally implied by having the weak implementation globally defined.
Let's fix the broken CM2 L2-sync arch-interface by dropping the static
qualifier and, seeing the implemented pattern hasn't been used for over 10
years but will be required soon (see the link for the discussion around
it), converting it to a single weakly defined method:
mips_cm_l2sync_phys_base().

Since commit 43a7206b09 ("driver core: class: make class_register() take
a const *"), the driver core allows for struct class to be in read-only
memory, so move the mt_class structure to be declared at build time placing
it into read-only memory, instead of having to be dynamically allocated at
boot time.

Now crash codes under kernel/ folder has been split out from kexec
code, crash dumping can be separated from kexec reboot in config
items on mips with some adjustments.
Here use IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_CRASH_RESERVE) check to decide if compiling
in the crashkernel reservation code.

With the expanded support for placing the kernel in XPHYS rather than
just KSEG0, scenarios where ebase doesn't belong to KSEG0 are more
likely to occur. In such cases, we currently experience a substantial
and perplexing stack dump without any accompanying explanation. To
rectify this, we aim to replace the uninformative stack dump with a
warning that offers a clear explanation of the issue.

Now the exception vector for CPS systems are allocated on-fly
with memblock as well.
It will try to allocate from KSEG1 first, and then try to allocate
in low 4G if possible.
The main reset vector is now generated by uasm, to avoid tons
of patches to the code. Other vectors are copied to the location
later.

ebase might reside in XKPHYS if memblock is unable to allocate memory
within the KSEG0 physical range.
To map EBASE into uncached space, we convert it back to its physical
address and utilize the new CKSEG1ADDR_OR_64BIT helper for mapping.

Use GPR number macros in uasm code generation parts to
reduce code duplication.
There are functional change due to difference in register
symbolic names between OABI and NABI, while existing code
is only using definitions from OABI.
Code pieces are carefully inspected to ensure register
usages are safe on NABI as well.
We changed register allocation of r_pcohctl from T7 to T8
as T7 is not available on NABI and we just want a caller
saved scratch register here.
