f73a8edc2c arm64: make huge_ptep_get handled unaligned addresses
huge_ptep_get() can be handed a virtual address pointing to the middle
of a contpmd/contpte mapped hugetlb folio (examples of callers are
pagemap_hugetlb_range, page_mapped_in_vma).

The arm64 helper rewalks the pgtables in find_num_contig to answer
whether the huge pte we have maps a contpmd or a contpte hugetlb folio,
and returns CONT_PMDS or CONT_PTES, so that it can collect a/d bits over
the contiguous ptes. We can falsely return CONT_PTES instead of
CONT_PMDS if the addr is not aligned. On systems where CONT_PTES !=
CONT_PMDS (meaning page size is 16K), we could collect excess A/D bit
state, meaning extra work for the kernel. Even worse, we may iterate
beyond the PTE table and dereference a garbage ptep pointer to access
physical memory we don't own. Since the ptep pointer is a linear map
address, we may run off the end of the linear map or into a hole,
dereference a VA not mapped into the kernel pgtables and cause kernel
panic.

Fix this by aligning the pmdp pointer down to a contpmd base before
checking equality with the passed huge pte pointer, to correctly answer
whether the huge pte is the base of a contpmd block.

285f90a4d1 arm64/mm: Check the requested PFN range during memory removal
prevent_memory_remove_notifier() advances pfn while scanning the requested
range for early memory. When the loop completes, pfn is at or beyond
end_pfn. Passing it to can_unmap_without_split() therefore checks a range
after the one being offlined.

Consequently, a valid request can be rejected based on the following
range, while a request that would split a leaf mapping can be accepted if
the shifted range can be unmapped without a split. This was observed with
CXL DAX memory, where the final memory block was incorrectly allowed to
be offlined.

Pass arg->start_pfn into can_unmap_without_split() so it checks the
requested range.

f797f51a18 arm64: mm: When logging data aborts only decode Xs when ISV=1
When logging the decode of a data abort we currently unconditionally decode
and display Xs. Currently the only defined non-RES0 values for this field
are for cases where ISV=1, move the decode of Xs into our existing check
for ISV=1. This avoids potential confusion if some other use is assigned to
these bits for ISV=0 cases in future, or misleading someone into thinking
there is a meaningful value there with currently defined architecture.

ff4c5a0de1 arm64/mm: Optimize TLB flush in unmap_hotplug_[pmd|pud]_range()
Commit 48478b9f79 ("arm64/mm: Enable batched TLB flush in
unmap_hotplug_range") inadvertently introduced redundant TLB
invalidation when clearing a block entry, resulting in unnecessary
broadcast invalidation on CPUs without support for range-based
invalidation.

Re-introduce the old behaviour, along with some expanded comments to
help people working in this area next time around.

36fa5ffa60 arm64: mm: Defer read-only remap of data/bss linear alias
Since commit

  f2ba877402 ("arm64: mm: Map the kernel data/bss read-only in the linear map")

the linear alias of the .data and .bss regions is remapped read-only
early during the boot. (Note that a subsequent patch to unmap this
region entirely was reverted just before the v7.2 merge window, and will
be brought back in an improved form for the v7.3 cycle)

Fuad reports that in some cases, the KVM init code may apply relocations
to variables that reside in .data, and does so via the linear map. This
means that remapping .data read-only beforehand is a bad idea, and
results in an early boot crash.

These variables in .data are only present when CONFIG_NVHE_EL2_DEBUG or
CONFIG_NVHE_EL2_TRACING are enabled, which is why it was not spotted in
testing.

So move the remap to mark_rodata_ro(), which is a reasonable place to
put this, and ensures that it happens much later during the boot. It
also means that rodata=off is now taken into account, and so the linear
alias will remain writable in that case.

     Registration object, making lifecycle ordering enforced by
     construction rather than convention.

   - Rust-native device driver lifetimes (HRT):

     Allow Rust device drivers to carry a lifetime parameter on their
     bus device private data, tied to the device binding scope -- the
     interval during which a bus device is bound to a driver. Device
     resources like pci::Bar<'a> and IoMem<'a> can be stored directly in
     the driver's bus device private data with a lifetime bounded by the
     binding scope, so the compiler enforces at build time that they do
     not outlive the binding. This removes Devres indirection from every
     access site and eliminates try_access() failure paths in
     destructors.

     Bus driver traits use a Generic Associated Type (GAT) Data<'bound>
     to introduce the lifetime on the private data, rather than
     parameterizing the Driver trait itself. Auxiliary registration
     data, where the lifetime is not introduced by a trait callback but
     must be threaded through Registration, uses the ForLt trait (a
     type-level abstraction for types generic over a lifetime).

  Misc:
   - Fix DT overlayed devices not probing by reverting the broken
     treewide overlay fix and re-running fw_devlink consumer pickup when
     an overlay is applied to a bound device
   - Use root_device_register() for faux bus root device; add sanity
     check for failed bus init
   - Fix dev_has_sync_state() data race with READ_ONCE() and move it to
     base.h
   - Avoid spurious device_links warning when removing a device while
     its supplier is unbinding
   - Switch ISA bus to dynamic root device
   - Fix suspicious RCU usage in kernfs_put()

9c401fa739 arm64: Rename page table BSS section to .bss..pgtbl
Rename the .pgdir.bss section to .bss..pgtbl so that the compiler will
notice the leading ".bss" and mark it as NOBITS by default (rather than
PROGBITS, which would take up space in Image binary, forcing all of the
preceding BSS to be emitted into the image as well). This supersedes the
NOLOAD linker directive, which achieves the same thing, and can be
therefore be dropped.

Also, rename .pgdir to .pgtbl to be more generic, as page tables of
various levels will reside here.

c594b83457 arm64: mm: call pagetable dtor when freeing hot-removed page tables
Since 5e8eb9aeed ("arm64: mm: always call PTE/PMD ctor in
__create_pgd_mapping()") page-table allocation on ARM64 always calls
pagetable_{pte,pmd,pud,p4d}_ctor().  This sets the page_type to
PGTY_table, increments NR_PAGETABLE and possible allocates a PTL.  However
the matching pagetable_dtor() calls were never added.

With DEBUG_VM enabled on kernel versions prior to v6.17 without

63e0b6a5b6 arm64: mm: Unmap kernel data/bss entirely from the linear map
The linear aliases of the kernel text and rodata are also mapped
read-only in the linear map. Given that the contents of these regions
are mostly identical to the version in the loadable image, mapping them
read-only and leaving their contents visible is a reasonable hardening
measure.

Data and bss, however, are now also mapped read-only but the contents of
these regions are more likely to contain data that we'd rather not leak.
So let's unmap these entirely in the linear map when the kernel is
running normally.

When going into hibernation or waking up from it, these regions need to
be mapped, so map the region initially, and toggle the valid bit so
map/unmap the region as needed.

Doing so is required because pages covering the kernel image are marked
as PageReserved, and therefore disregarded for snapshotting by the
hibernate logic unless they are mapped.

f2ba877402 arm64: mm: Map the kernel data/bss read-only in the linear map
On systems where the bootloader adheres to the original arm64 boot
protocol, the placement of the kernel in the physical address space is
highly predictable, and this makes the placement of its linear alias in
the kernel virtual address space equally predictable, given the lack of
randomization of the linear map.

The linear aliases of the kernel text and rodata regions are already
mapped read-only, but the kernel data and bss are mapped read-write in
this region. This is not needed, so map them read-only as well.

Note that the statically allocated kernel page tables do need to be
modifiable via the linear map, so leave these mapped read-write.

Now that the linear region mapping routines respect existing table
mappings and contiguous block and page mappings, it is no longer needed
to fiddle with the memblock tables to set and clear the NOMAP attribute
in order to omit text and rodata when creating the linear map.

Instead, map the kernel text and rodata alias first with the desired
initial attributes and granularity, so that the loop iterating over the
memblocks will not remap it in a manner that prevents it from being
remapped with updated attributes later.

Move the fixmap and kasan page tables out of the BSS section, and place
them at the end of the image, right before the init_pg_dir section where
some of the other statically allocated page tables live.

These page tables are currently the only data objects in vmlinux that
are meant to be accessed via the kernel image's linear alias, and so
placing them together allows the remainder of the data/bss section to be
remapped read-only or unmapped entirely.

28becb2c1d arm64: mm: Permit contiguous attribute for preliminary mappings
There are a few cases where we omit the contiguous hint for mappings
that start out as read-write and are remapped read-only later, on the
basis that manipulating live descriptors with the PTE_CONT attribute set
is unsafe. When support for the contiguous hint was added to the code,
the ARM ARM was ambiguous about this, and so we erred on the side of
caution.

In the meantime, this has been clarified [0], and regions that will be
remapped in their entirety, retaining the contiguous bit on all entries,
can use the contiguous hint both in the initial mapping as well as the
one that replaces it. Note that this requires that the logic that may be
called to remap overlapping regions respects existing valid descriptors
that have the contiguous bit cleared.

So omit the NO_CONT_MAPPINGS flag in places where it is unneeded.

For a TLB lookup in a contiguous region mapped by translation table entries that
have consistent values for the Contiguous bit, but have the OA, attributes, or
permissions misprogrammed, that TLB lookup is permitted to produce an OA, access

dfd73e574d arm64: kfence: Avoid NOMAP tricks when mapping the early pool
Now that the map_mem() routines respect existing page mappings and
contiguous granule sized blocks with the contiguous bit cleared, there
is no longer a reason to play tricks with the memblock NOMAP attribute.

Instead, the kfence pool can be allocated and mapped with page
granularity first, and this granularity will be respected when the rest
of DRAM is mapped later, even if block and contiguous mappings are
allowed for the remainder of those mappings.

Add the NO_EXEC_MAPPINGS flag to ensure that hierarchical XN attributes
are set on the intermediate page tables that are allocated when mapping
the pool.

05c5c31e9d arm64: mm: Permit contiguous descriptors to be manipulated
Currently, pgattr_change_is_safe() is overly pedantic when it comes to
descriptors with the contiguous hint attribute set, as it rejects
assignments even if the old and the new value are the same.

In fact, as per ARM ARM RJQQTC, manipulating descriptors with the
contiguous bit set is safe as long as the bit itself does not change
value, in the sense that no TLB conflict aborts or other exceptions may
be raised as a result. Inconsistent permission attributes within the
contiguous region may result in any of the alternatives to be taken to
apply to the entire region, which might be a programming error, but it
does not constitute an unsafe manipulation in terms of what
pgattr_change_is_safe() is intended to detect.

So drop the special PTE_CONT check, but still omit PTE_CONT from 'mask'
so that modifying the bit is still regarded as unsafe.

ARM ARM RNGLXZ) if the region in question already contains a mix of
valid contiguous and valid non-contiguous descriptors, in which case it
was already misprogrammed to begin with.

Sashiko reports:

| If pmd_set_huge() rejects an unsafe page table transition (such as
| mapping a different physical address over an existing block mapping),
| it returns 0 and leaves the page table entry unmodified.
|
| Because *pmdp remains unmodified, READ_ONCE(pmd_val(*pmdp)) will equal
| pmd_val(old_pmd). The transition from old_pmd to old_pmd is evaluated
| as safe by pgattr_change_is_safe(), so the BUG_ON never triggers.
|
| This allows invalid and unsafe mapping updates to be silently dropped
| instead of panicking, leaving stale memory mappings active while the
| caller assumes the update was successful.

The same applies to pud_set_huge() in alloc_init_pud().

Given how it is generally preferred to limp on rather than blow up the
system if an unexpected condition such as this one occurs, and the fact
that there are no known cases where this disparity results in real
problems, let's WARN on these failures rather than BUG, allowing the
system to survive to the point where it can actually report them.

3bbc54dd1b mm/sparse-vmemmap: pass @pgmap argument to memory deactivation paths
Currently, the memory hot-remove call chain -- arch_remove_memory(),
__remove_pages(), sparse_remove_section() and section_deactivate() -- does
not carry the struct dev_pagemap pointer.  This prevents the lower levels
from knowing whether the section was originally populated with vmemmap
optimizations (e.g., DAX with vmemmap optimization enabled).

Without this information, we cannot call vmemmap_can_optimize() to
determine if the vmemmap pages were optimized.  As a result, the vmemmap
page accounting during teardown will mistakenly assume a non-optimized
allocation, leading to incorrect memmap statistics.

To lay the groundwork for fixing the vmemmap page accounting, we need to
pass the @pgmap pointer down to the deactivation location.  Plumb the
@pgmap argument through the APIs of arch_remove_memory(), __remove_pages()
and sparse_remove_section(), mirroring the corresponding *_activate()
paths.

Motivation
----------

sched_ext's ops_cid.set_cmask() hands the BPF scheduler a struct scx_cmask
*. The kernel translates a kernel cpumask to a cmask, but it had no way to
write into the arena, so the cmask lived in kernel memory and was passed as
a trusted pointer. BPF cmask helpers all operate on arena cmasks though, so
the BPF side had to word-by-word probe-read the kernel cmask into an arena
cmask via cmask_copy_from_kernel() before any helper could touch it. It
works, but is clumsy.

The shape isn't unique to set_cmask. Sub-scheduler support is on the way and
more sched_ext callbacks will want to pass structured data to BPF. Anywhere
a kfunc or struct_ops callback wants to hand a struct to a BPF program,
arena residence is the natural answer.

Approach
--------

Each arena gets a per-arena scratch page. Arenas stay sparsely mapped as
today - PTEs are populated only for allocated pages. A new arch fault hook
(bpf_arena_handle_page_fault) is wired into x86 page_fault_oops() and arm64
__do_kernel_fault(), after KFENCE. When a kernel-side access faults inside
an arena's kern_vm range, the helper walks the stack to find the BPF program
responsible, range-checks the fault address against prog->aux->arena, and
atomically installs the scratch page into the empty PTE via the new
ptep_try_set() wrapper. The kernel instruction retries and reads/writes the
scratch page. Free paths and map destruction treat scratch as non-owned.
Real allocation refuses to overwrite scratch (apply_range_set_cb returns
-EBUSY). A scratched address stays dead until map destroy, since its
presence means the BPF program has already malfunctioned.

The mechanism is default behavior - no UAPI flag.

What this preserves
-------------------

All the debugging properties of today's sparse-PTE design are preserved:

* BPF programs still fault on unmapped arena accesses. The fault semantics
  (instruction retry with rdst = 0) and the violation report through
  bpf_streams are unchanged for prog-side accesses.

* The first kernel-side touch of an unmapped address is reported via
  bpf_streams the same way as a prog-side fault, with the stack walk
  attributing it to the originating prog.

* User-side fault on a never-scratched address still lazy-allocates a real
  page (or returns SIGSEGV under BPF_F_SEGV_ON_FAULT). User-side fault on a
  scratched address SIGSEGVs.

What changes for the kernel-side caller is just that an unmapped deref no
longer oopses - it retries through the scratch page and emits a violation
report. The same shape today's BPF instruction faults have.

dc11a4dba2 bpf: Recover arena kernel faults with scratch page
BPF arena usage is becoming more prevalent, but kernel <-> BPF communication
over arena memory is awkward today. Data has to be staged through a trusted
kernel pointer with extra code and copying on the BPF side. While reads
through arena pointers can use a fault-safe helper, writes don't have a good
solution. The in-line alternative would need instruction emulation or asm
fixup labels.

Enable direct kernel-side reads and writes within GUARD_SZ / 2 of any
handed-in arena pointer, without bounds checking. A per-arena scratch page
is installed by the arch fault path into empty arena kernel PTEs - x86 from
page_fault_oops() for not-present faults, arm64 from __do_kernel_fault() for
translation faults, both after the existing exception-table and KFENCE
handling. The faulting instruction retries and the access is also reported
through the program's BPF stream, preserving error reporting.

bpf_prog_find_from_stack() resolves the current BPF program (and its arena)
from the kernel stack - no new bpf_run_ctx state is added. Recovery covers
the 4 GiB arena plus the upper half-guard (GUARD_SZ / 2). The lower
half-guard is excluded because well-behaved kfuncs only access forward from
arena pointers. The kfunc-author contract - access at most GUARD_SZ / 2 past
a handed-in pointer - is documented in Documentation/bpf/kfuncs.rst.

The install is lock-free via ptep_try_set(). On race-loss the winning
installer's PTE is already valid, so the access retry succeeds. The arena
clear path uses ptep_get_and_clear() so installer and clearer race through
atomic accessors. No flush_tlb_kernel_range() afterwards. Stale "not mapped"
entries just cause one extra re-fault, cheaper than a global IPI on every
install.

Scratch exists only to keep the kernel from oopsing on an in-line arena
access. Its presence at a PTE means the BPF program has already
malfunctioned, and the violation is reported through the program's BPF
stream. The only requirement for behavior on a scratched PTE is that the
kernel doesn't crash. In particular, any user-side access through such a PTE
may segfault. The shared scratch page is freed once during map destruction.

BPF instruction faults continue to use the existing JIT exception-table
path. This patch changes only the kernel-text fault path. No UAPI flag is
added. The new behavior is the default.

6a288a4ddb mm/page_alloc: fix initialization of tags of the huge zero folio with init_on_free
__GFP_ZEROTAGS semantics are currently a bit weird, but effectively this
flag is only ever set alongside __GFP_ZERO and __GFP_SKIP_KASAN.

If we run with init_on_free, we will zero out pages during
__free_pages_prepare(), to skip zeroing on the allocation path.

However, when allocating with __GFP_ZEROTAG set, post_alloc_hook() will
consequently not only skip clearing page content, but also skip clearing
tag memory.

Not clearing tags through __GFP_ZEROTAGS is irrelevant for most pages that
will get mapped to user space through set_pte_at() later: set_pte_at() and
friends will detect that the tags have not been initialized yet
(PG_mte_tagged not set), and initialize them.

However, for the huge zero folio, which will be mapped through a PMD
marked as special, this initialization will not be performed, ending up
exposing whatever tags were still set for the pages.

The docs (Documentation/arch/arm64/memory-tagging-extension.rst) state
that allocation tags are set to 0 when a page is first mapped to user
space.  That no longer holds with the huge zero folio when init_on_free is
enabled.

Fix it by decoupling __GFP_ZEROTAGS from __GFP_ZERO, passing to
tag_clear_highpages() whether we want to also clear page content.

Invert the meaning of the tag_clear_highpages() return value to have
clearer semantics.

Reproduced with the huge zero folio by modifying the check_buffer_fill
arm64/mte selftest to use a 2 MiB area, after making sure that pages have
a non-0 tag set when freeing (note that, during boot, we will not actually
initialize tags, but only set KASAN_TAG_KERNEL in the page flags).

Patch series "change young flag check functions to return bool", v2.

This is a cleanup patchset to change all young flag check functions to
return bool, as discussed with David in the previous thread[1].  Since
callers only care about whether the young flag was set, returning bool
makes the intention clearer.  No functional changes intended.


This patch (of 6):

Callers use ptep_test_and_clear_young() to clear the young flag and check
whether it was set.  Change the return type to bool to make the intention
clearer.

26513781d1 mm: cache struct page for empty_zero_page and return it from ZERO_PAGE()
For most architectures every invocation of ZERO_PAGE() does
virt_to_page(empty_zero_page).  But empty_zero_page is in BSS and it is
enough to get its struct page once at initialization time and then use it
whenever a zero page should be accessed.

Add yet another __zero_page variable that will be initialized as
virt_to_page(empty_zero_page) for most architectures in a weak
arch_setup_zero_pages() function.

For architectures that use colored zero pages (MIPS and s390) rename their
setup_zero_pages() to arch_setup_zero_pages() and make it global rather
than static.

For architectures that cannot use virt_to_page() for BSS (arm64 and
sparc64) add override of arch_setup_zero_pages().

Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the
most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions
of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page).

Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the
core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement
colored zero page (MIPS and s390).

ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static
inline causes severe pain in header dependencies.

For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy:

* alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot
  parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing
  and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only
* arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of
  ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact.
* m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock,
  although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS
  will work fine.
* sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it
  can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE()
  but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to
  empty_zero_page.
* sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot.
  Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic
  empty_zero_page.
* hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page

1d37713fa8 arm64: mm: Remove pmd_sect() and pud_sect()
The semantics of pXd_leaf() are very similar to pXd_sect(). The only
difference is that pXd_sect() only considers it a section if PTE_VALID
is set, whereas pXd_leaf() permits both "valid" and "present-invalid"
types.

Using pXd_sect() has caused issues now that large leaf entries can be
present-invalid since commit a166563e7e ("arm64: mm: support large
block mapping when rodata=full"), so let's just remove the API and
standardize on pXd_leaf().

There are a few callsites of the form pXd_leaf(READ_ONCE(*pXdp)). This
was previously fine for the pXd_sect() macro because it only evaluated
its argument once. But pXd_leaf() evaluates its argument multiple times.
So let's avoid unintended side effects by reimplementing pXd_leaf() as
an inline function.

15bfba1ad7 arm64: mm: Handle invalid large leaf mappings correctly
It has been possible for a long time to mark ptes in the linear map as
invalid. This is done for secretmem, kfence, realm dma memory un/share,
and others, by simply clearing the PTE_VALID bit. But until commit
a166563e7e ("arm64: mm: support large block mapping when
rodata=full") large leaf mappings were never made invalid in this way.

It turns out various parts of the code base are not equipped to handle
invalid large leaf mappings (in the way they are currently encoded) and

This panic occurs because the swiotlb memory was previously shared to
the host (__set_memory_enc_dec()), which involves transitioning the
(large) leaf mappings to invalid, sharing to the host, then marking the
mappings valid again. But pageattr_p[mu]d_entry() would only update the
entry if it is a section mapping, since otherwise it concluded it must
be a table entry so shouldn't be modified. But p[mu]d_sect() only
returns true if the entry is valid. So the result was that the large
leaf entry was made invalid in the first pass then ignored in the second
pass. It remains invalid until the above code tries to access it and
blows up.

The simple fix would be to update pageattr_pmd_entry() to use
!pmd_table() instead of pmd_sect(). That would solve this problem.

But the ptdump code also suffers from a similar issue. It checks
pmd_leaf() and doesn't call into the arch-specific note_page() machinery
if it returns false. As a result of this, ptdump wasn't even able to
show the invalid large leaf mappings; it looked like they were valid
which made this super fun to debug. the ptdump code is core-mm and
pmd_table() is arm64-specific so we can't use the same trick to solve
that.

But we already support the concept of "present-invalid" for user space
entries. And even better, pmd_leaf() will return true for a leaf mapping
that is marked present-invalid. So let's just use that encoding for
present-invalid kernel mappings too. Then we can use pmd_leaf() where we
previously used pmd_sect() and everything is magically fixed.

Additionally, from inspection kernel_page_present() was broken in a
similar way, so I'm also updating that to use pmd_leaf().

The transitional page tables component was also similarly broken; it
creates a copy of the kernel page tables, making RO leaf mappings RW in
the process. It also makes invalid (but-not-none) pte mappings valid.
But it was not doing this for large leaf mappings. This could have
resulted in crashes at kexec- or hibernate-time. This code is fixed to
flip "present-invalid" mappings back to "present-valid" at all levels.

Finally, I have hardened split_pmd()/split_pud() so that if it is passed
a "present-invalid" leaf, it will maintain that property in the split
leaves, since I wasn't able to convince myself that it would only ever
be called for "present-valid" leaves.
