soc: defconfig updates for 7.2
The main change this time is a cleanup series from Krzysztof Kozlowski that updates the defconfig files to be more in sync with changes to the Kconfig files that moved options around or removed the completely. soc: devicetree updates for 7.2
There are fewer devicetree updates this time that the last few ones, with
five SoC types getting added:
- Qualcomm Dragonwing IPQ9650 is a new wireless networking SoC using
four Cortex-A55 and one Cortex-A78 core, which is a significant
upgrade from older generations
- ZTE zx297520v3 is an older low-end wireless SoC using a single
Cortex-A53 core, which so far can only run 32-bit kernels. This brings
back the ZX family of chips that was removed in 2021 after support
for the original zx296702 and zx296718 chips was never completed.
- Renesas R-Car M3Le (R8A779MD) is a variant of the R-Car M3-N (R8A77965)
automotive SoC.
- Apple t8122 (M3) is the 2023 generation of their laptop SoCs,
which has now been reverse-engineered to the point of having initial
kernel support for five laptop models.
- ASPEED AST27xx is their first baseboard managment controller using
a 64-bit core, the Cortex-A35, following earlier generations using
ARMv5/v6/v7 CPUs.
These all come with one or more initial boards, and in total there
are 39 new boards getting added across SoC families, including:
- Two NAS boxes using the old Cortina Systems Gemini SoC based on
an ARMv4 FA526 CPU core
- 18 industrial embedded boards using NXP i.MX6/8/9 and LX2160A
SoCs from Variscite, Toradex and SolidRun, plus a number of
overlays for combinations with additional boards
- One new carrier board and SoM using TI K3 AM62x, in addition to
new overlays for older SoMs
- Two new boards using Spacemit K3 (no relation with TI) RISC-V
SoCs.
- Three phones from Google, Nothing and Motorola, all using Qualcomm
Snapdragon SoCs
- AST26xx BMC support for two server boards
While there is still a significant number of patches improving hardware
support for the existing boards across vendors (NXP, Qualcomm, Renesas,
Rockchips, Mediatek, ...), a much smaller number of cleanups and warning

arm64: defconfig: Switch Ethernet drivers to modules
Development of Linux kernel progressed over last 10 years and it is easy to generate now initramfs for building own kernel, e.g. with Yocto or mkosi. Therefore for a few years of reviews on mailing lists, all new options enabled in arm64 defconfig were with assumption of having initramfs which can load bare minimum of modules to mount filesystem from network or disk. Basically network driver as built-in is not anymore essential to boot the system, so switch almost all Ethernet drivers to modules to save on kernel image size. Similarly 9P network filesystem for QEMU, especially that testing kernel unuder QEMU does not have any size or build process constraints and can use initramfs with -initrd argument. Note that having network drivers does not break NFS root, because whatever loading method, e.g. TFTP, which brought the kernel image can bring also the initramfs with network adapters (and I have been using such method for years for my Samsung boards). Notable exceptions / diff explanations: 1. Mark I2C as built-in, used by CONFIG_IGB as a module. 2. CONFIG_BCM4908_ENET and CONFIG_BCMASP appear in the diff, because they were default=y (via ARCH_BCMBCA or ARCH_BCM_IPROC). 3. CONFIG_HNS3_HCLGE and CONFIG_HNS3_ENET are removed, because they are default=m. Moving code to modules has positive impact on kernel image size, thus boot time of all users not using above drivers and ability to flash fixed-size boot partitions. pinctrl: qcom: Make important drivers default (2)
The main SoC TLMM (Top-Level Multiplexer) pin controller drivers are essential for booting up SoCs and are not really optional for a given platform. Kernel should not ask users choice of drivers when that choice is obvious and known to the developers that answer should be 'yes' or 'module'. Switch all Qualcomm TLMM pin controller drivers to a default 'yes' for ARCH_QCOM. This has impact: 1. arm64 defconfig: enable PINCTRL_SM7150, PINCTRL_IPQ9650 and PINCTRL_HAWI, which were not selected before but should be, because these platforms need them for proper boot. 2. arm qcom_defconfig: no changes. 3. arm multi_v7 defconfig: enable drivers necessary to boot ARM 32-bit platforms, which are already enabled on qcom_defconfig. 4. COMPILE_TEST builds: enable by default all drivers for arm or arm64 builds, whenever ARCH_QCOM is selected. This has impact on build time and feels logical, because if one selects ARCH_QCOM then probably by default wants to build test it entirely. Kernels with COMPILE_TEST are not supposed to be used for booting. crypto: Remove michael_mic from crypto_shash API
Remove the "michael_mic" crypto_shash algorithm, since it's no longer used. Its only users were wireless drivers, which have now been converted to use the michael_mic() function instead. It makes sense that no other users ever appeared: Michael MIC is an insecure algorithm that is specific to WPA TKIP, which itself was an interim security solution to replace the broken WEP standard. ipv6: convert CONFIG_IPV6 to built-in only and clean up Kconfigs
Maintaining a modular IPv6 stack offers image size savings for specific setups, this benefit is outweighed by the architectural burden it imposes on the subsystems on implementation and maintenance. Therefore, drop it. Change CONFIG_IPV6 from tristate to bool. Remove all Kconfig dependencies across the tree that explicitly checked for IPV6=m. In addition, remove MODULE_DESCRIPTION(), MODULE_ALIAS(), MODULE_AUTHOR() and MODULE_LICENSE(). This is also replacing module_init() by device_initcall(). It is not possible to use fs_initcall() as IPv4 does because that creates a race condition on IPv6 addrconf. Finally, modify the default configs from CONFIG_IPV6=m to CONFIG_IPV6=y except for m68k as according to the bloat-o-meter the image is increasing by 330KB~ and that isn't acceptable. Instead, disable IPv6 on this architecture by default. This is aligned with m68k RAM requirements and recommendations [1]. lib/crypto: arm64/sm3: Migrate optimized code into library
Instead of exposing the arm64-optimized SM3 code via arm64-specific crypto_shash algorithms, instead just implement the sm3_blocks() library function. This is much simpler, it makes the SM3 library functions be arm64-optimized, and it fixes the longstanding issue where the arm64-optimized SM3 code was disabled by default. SM3 still remains available through crypto_shash, but individual architectures no longer need to handle it. Tweak the SM3 assembly function prototypes to match what the library expects, including changing the block count from 'int' to 'size_t'. sm3_ce_transform() had to be updated to access 'x2' instead of 'w2', while sm3_neon_transform() already used 'x2'. Remove the CFI stubs which are no longer needed because the SM3 assembly functions are no longer ever indirectly called. Remove the dependency on KERNEL_MODE_NEON. It was unnecessary, because KERNEL_MODE_NEON is always enabled on arm64. All Qualcomm SoCs starting from SM8650 provide access to the Qualcomm Trusted Execution Environment (QTEE) through the SMCInvoke interface, implemented by the QCOMTEE driver. QTEE runs in the Secure World domain on ARM64 CPUs and exposes secure services to Linux running in the Normal World domain. This change enables the QCOMTEE driver as a module to support communication with QTEE.
