Patchsets in this merge:
- The 2 patch series "selftests/mm: clean up build output and verbosity"
from Li Wang removes some noise from the MM selftests build out.
- The 3 patch series "mm: Free contiguous order-0 pages efficiently"
from Ryan Roberts speeds up the freeing of a batch of 0-order pages by
first scanning them for coalescing opportunities. This is applicable to
vfree() and to the releasing of frozen pages.
- The 11 patch series "mm/damon: introduce DAMOS failed region quota
charge ratio" from SeongJae Park addresses a DAMOS usability issue: The
DAMOS quota often exhausts prematurely because it charges for all memory
attempted, causing slow and inconsistent performance when actions fail
on unreclaimable memory.
To fix this, a new feature lets users set a smaller, flexible quota
charge ratio (via a numerator and denominator) for failed regions.
Since failed actions cause less overhead, reducing their quota cost
ensures more predictable and efficient DAMOS processing
- The 8 patch series "selftests/cgroup: improve zswap tests robustness
and support large page sizes" from Li Wang fixes various spurious
failures and improves the overall robustness of the cgroup zswap
selftests.
- The 3 patch series "fix MAP_DROPPABLE not supported errno" from
Anthony Yznaga fixes an issue in the mlock selftests on arm32.
- The 2 patch series "mm: huge_memory: clean up defrag sysfs with
shared" from Breno Leitao does some maintenance work in the huge_memory
code.
- The 3 patch series "treewide: fixup gfp_t printks" from Brendan
Jackman uses the special vprintf() gfp_t conversion in various places.
- The 6 patch series "mm: Fix vmemmap optimization accounting and
initialization" from Muchun Song fixes several bugs in the vmemmap
optimization, mainly around incorrect page accounting and memmap
initialization in the DAX and memory hotplug paths. It also fixes
pageblock migratetype initialization and struct page initialization for
ZONE_DEVICE compound pages.

damon/next tree" from is a sprinkle of unrelated minor bugfixes for
DAMON.
- The 3 patch series "mm: remove page_mapped()" from David Hildenbrand
remove this function from the tree, replacing it with folio_mapped().
- The 10 patch series "mm/damon: let DAMON be paused and resumed" from
SeongJae Park permits DAMON to be paused and resumed without losing its
current state.
- The 3 patch series "kasan: hw_tags: Disable tagging for stack and
page-tables" from Muhammad Usama Anjum simplifies and speeds up kasan by
removing its ineffective tagging of stacks and page tables.
- The 7 patch series "mm/damon/reclaim,lru_sort: monitor all system rams
by default" from SeongJae Park simplifies deployment on diverse hardware
like NUMA systems by updating DAMON_RECLAIM and DAMON_LRU_SORT to
automatically monitor the physical address range covering all System RAM
areas by default, replacing the overly restrictive behavior that only
targeted the single largest memory block to save on negligible overhead.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon/sysfs: document filters/ directory as
deprecated" from SeongJae Park updates some DAMON docs.
- The 8 patch series "mm: use spinlock guards for zone lock" from Dmitry
Ilvokhin switches zone->lock handling over to using the guard()
mechanisms.
- The 2 patch series "mm/filemap: tighten mmap_miss hit accounting" from
fujunjie fixes a flaw where the mmap_miss counter over-credited page
cache hits during fault-arounds and page-fault retries. This results in
significant reduction of redundant synchronous mmap readahead I/O,
drastically cutting down execution time and gigabytes read for sparse
random or strided memory access workloads.
- The 2 patch series "selftests/cgroup: Fix false positive failures in
test_percpu_basic" from Li Wang fixes a couple of false-positives in the
cgroup kmem selftests.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon/reclaim: support monitoring intervals
auto-tuning" from SeongJae Park adds a new parameter to DAMON permitting
DAMON_RECLAIM to automatically tune DAMON's sampling and aggregation
intervals.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon/stat: add kdamond_pid parameter" from
SeongJae Park chnges DAMON_STAT to provide the pid of its kdamond.

Breno Leitao removes large amounts of duplicated backtraces from the
verbose-mode kmemleak output.
- The 8 patch series "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 1)"
from David Hildenbrand reduces our use of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE,
with a view to removing it entirely in a later series.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon: validate min_region_size to be power of
2" from Liew Rui Yan prevents users from passing a non-power-of-2 value
of `addr_unit', as this later results in undesirable behavior.
- The 2 patch series "mm: document read_pages and simplify usage" from
Frederick Mayle does as claimed.
- The 3 patch series "tools/mm/page-types: Fix misc bugs" from Ye Liu
fixes three issues in tools/mm/page-types.c.
- The 4 patch series "mm: misc cleanups from __GFP_UNMAPPED series" from
Brendan Jackman implements several cleanups in the page allocator and
related code.
- The 12 patch series "mm, swap: swap table phase IV: unify allocation"
from Kairui Song unifies the allocation and charging of anon and shmem
swap in folios, provides better synchronization, consolidates the
metadata management, hence dropping the static array and map, and
improves performance.
- The 28 patch series "mm/damon: introduce data attributes monitoring"
from SeongJae Park extends DAMON for monitoring general data attributes
other than accesses.
- The 5 patch series "mm/vmalloc: free unused pages on vrealloc()
shrink" from Shivam Kalra implements the TODO in vrealloc() to unmap and
free unused pages when shrinking across a page boundary.
- The 3 patch series "mm/damon: documentation and comment fixes" from
niecheng does as advertised.
- The 3 patch series "remove mmap_action success, error hooks" from
Lorenzo Stoakes eliminates custom hooks from mmap_action by removing the
problematic success_hook which allowed drivers to improperly access
uninitialized VMAs. It replaces the error_hook with a simple error-code
field and updates the memory char driver accordingly.
- The 14 patch series "mm/damon: minor improvements for code readability
and tests" from SeongJae Park implements minor improvements in code
readability and tests for DAMON.
- The 2 patch series "mm/damon: fix macro arguments and clarify quota
goals doc" from Maksym Shcherba does those things.
- The 2 patch series "userfaultfd: merge fs/userfaultfd.c into

objcgs" from Shakeel Butt resolves a 68% performance regression caused
by NUMA-node cache thrashing around struct obj_stock_pcp by shrinking
its existing fields and expanding it into a multi-slot array that caches
up to five obj_cgroup pointers per CPU, allowing per-node variants of
the same memcg to coexist within a single 64-byte cache line.
- The 2 patch series "zram: writeback fixes" from Sergey Senozhatsky
addresses a couple of unrelated zram writeback issues.
- The 9 patch series "mm: switch THP shrinker to list_lru" from Johannes
Weiner resolves NUMA-awareness issues and streamlines callsite
interaction by refactoring and extending the list_lru API to completely
replace the complex, open-coded deferred split queue for Transparent
Huge Pages (THPs).
- The 2 patch series "mm: improve large folio readahead for exec memory"

uswsusp-vs-swapoff race and reduces the swap device reference
taking/releasing frequency.
- The 2 patch series "mm/hmm: A fix and a selftest" from Dev Jain does
as claimed.

PM: QoS: Fix misc device registration unwind
cpu_latency_qos_init() registers cpu_dma_latency first and, when
CONFIG_PM_QOS_CPU_SYSTEM_WAKEUP is enabled, registers cpu_wakeup_latency
afterwards. The second registration overwrites the first return value.
As a result, a failure to register cpu_dma_latency can be masked if the
second registration succeeds. Conversely, if cpu_dma_latency succeeds and
cpu_wakeup_latency fails, the function returns an error while leaving the
first misc device registered.
Return immediately on the first registration failure and deregister
cpu_dma_latency if the second registration fails.

mm/swap, PM: hibernate: fix swapoff race in uswsusp by pinning swap device
Patch series "mm/swap, PM: hibernate: fix swapoff race in uswsusp by pinning swap device", v8. Currently, in the uswsusp path, only the swap type value is retrieved at lookup time without holding a reference. If swapoff races after the type is acquired, subsequent slot allocations operate on a stale swap device. Additionally, grabbing and releasing the swap device reference on every slot allocation is inefficient across the entire hibernation swap path. This patch series addresses these issues: - Patch 1: Fixes the swapoff race in uswsusp by pinning the swap device from the point it is looked up until the session completes. - Patch 2: Removes the overhead of per-slot reference counting in alloc/free paths and cleans up the redundant SWP_WRITEOK check. This patch (of 2): Hibernation via uswsusp (/dev/snapshot ioctls) has a race window: after selecting the resume swap area but before user space is frozen, swapoff may run and invalidate the selected swap device. Fix this by pinning the swap device with SWP_HIBERNATION while it is in use. The pin is exclusive, which is sufficient since hibernate_acquire() already prevents concurrent hibernation sessions. The kernel swsusp path (sysfs-based hibernate/resume) uses find_hibernation_swap_type() which is not affected by the pin. It freezes user space before touching swap, so swapoff cannot race. Introduce dedicated helpers: - pin_hibernation_swap_type(): Look up and pin the swap device. Used by the uswsusp path. - find_hibernation_swap_type(): Lookup without pinning. Used by the kernel swsusp path. - unpin_hibernation_swap_type(): Clear the hibernation pin. While a swap device is pinned, swapoff is prevented from proceeding. mm: introduce for_each_free_list()
Patch series "mm: misc cleanups from __GFP_UNMAPPED series". In v2 of the __GFP_UNMAPPED series [0], we realised that some of the patches could potentially be merged as independent cleanups. These are all independent of one another, if you think some are useful cleanups and others are pointless churn, it should be fine to just pick whatever subset you prefer. No functional change intended. This patch (of 4): There are a couple of places that iterate over the freelists with awareness of the data structures' layout. It seems ideally, code outside of mm should not be aware of the page allocator's freelists at all. But, this patch just doesn't hide them completely, it's just a meek incremental step in that direction: provide a macro to iterate over it without needing to be aware of the actual struct fields. PM: hibernate: Use flexible array for CRC uncompressed buffers
The CRC uncompressed buffer pointer array has the same lifetime as struct crc_data, but it is currently allocated separately. That adds another allocation failure path and a matching cleanup branch without providing any extra flexibility. Store the pointer array as a flexible array member and allocate it together with the crc_data using kzalloc_flex(). The array remains zero-initialized, while the allocation and error handling become simpler. Certain drivers release resources (pinned pages, etc.) into system memory during the prepare freeze PM op, making them swappable. Currently, hibernate_preallocate_memory() is called before prepare freeze, so those drivers have no opportunity to release resources first. If a driver is holding a large amount of unswappable system RAM, this can cause hibernate_preallocate_memory() to fail. Move the call to hibernate_preallocate_memory() after prepare freeze. According to the documentation for the prepare callback, devices should be left in a usable state, so storage drivers should still be able to service I/O requests. This allows drivers to release unswappable resources prior to preallocation, so they can be swapped out through hibernate_preallocate_memory()'s reclaim path. Also remove shrink_shmem_memory() since hibernate_preallocate_memory() will have reclaimed enough memory for the hibernation image. PM: EM: Fix NULL pointer dereference when perf domain ID is not found
dev_energymodel_nl_get_perf_domains_doit() calls
em_perf_domain_get_by_id() but does not check the return value before
passing it to __em_nl_get_pd_size(). When a caller supplies a
non-existent perf domain ID, em_perf_domain_get_by_id() returns NULL,
and __em_nl_get_pd_size() immediately dereferences pd->cpus
(struct offset 0x30), causing a NULL pointer dereference.
The sister handler dev_energymodel_nl_get_perf_table_doit() already
handles this correctly via __em_nl_get_pd_table_id(), which returns
NULL and causes the caller to return -EINVAL. Add the same NULL check
in the get-perf-domains do handler.

PM: hibernate: return -ENODATA if the snapshot image is not loaded
snapshot_image_loaded() is used in both the in-kernel and the userspace restore path to ensure that the snapshot image has been completely loaded. However the latter path returns -EPERM in such situations, which is meant for cases where the operation is neither write-only nor ready. This patch updates the check so the returned error code is -ENODATA in both cases. Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org> |

mm, swap: cleanup swap entry management workflow
The current swap entry allocation/freeing workflow has never had a clear definition. This makes it hard to debug or add new optimizations. This commit introduces a proper definition of how swap entries would be allocated and freed. Now, most operations are folio based, so they will never exceed one swap cluster, and we now have a cleaner border between swap and the rest of mm, making it much easier to follow and debug, especially with new added sanity checks. Also making more optimization possible. Swap entry will be mostly freed and free with a folio bound. The folio lock will be useful for resolving many swap related races. Now swap allocation (except hibernation) always starts with a folio in the swap cache, and gets duped/freed protected by the folio lock: - folio_alloc_swap() - The only allocation entry point now. Context: The folio must be locked. This allocates one or a set of continuous swap slots for a folio and binds them to the folio by adding the folio to the swap cache. The swap slots' swap count start with zero value. - folio_dup_swap() - Increase the swap count of one or more entries. Context: The folio must be locked and in the swap cache. For now, the caller still has to lock the new swap entry owner (e.g., PTL). This increases the ref count of swap entries allocated to a folio. Newly allocated swap slots' count has to be increased by this helper as the folio got unmapped (and swap entries got installed). - folio_put_swap() - Decrease the swap count of one or more entries. Context: The folio must be locked and in the swap cache. For now, the caller still has to lock the new swap entry owner (e.g., PTL). This decreases the ref count of swap entries allocated to a folio. Typically, swapin will decrease the swap count as the folio got installed back and the swap entry got uninstalled This won't remove the folio from the swap cache and free the slot. Lazy freeing of swap cache is helpful for reducing IO. There is already a folio_free_swap() for immediate cache reclaim. This part could be further optimized later. The above locking constraints could be further relaxed when the swap table is fully implemented. Currently dup still needs the caller to lock the swap entry container (e.g. PTL), or a concurrent zap may underflow the swap count. Some swap users need to interact with swap count without involving folio (e.g. forking/zapping the page table or mapping truncate without swapin). In such cases, the caller has to ensure there is no race condition on whatever owns the swap count and use the below helpers: - swap_put_entries_direct() - Decrease the swap count directly. Context: The caller must lock whatever is referencing the slots to avoid a race. Typically the page table zapping or shmem mapping truncate will need to free swap slots directly. If a slot is cached (has a folio bound), this will also try to release the swap cache. - swap_dup_entry_direct() - Increase the swap count directly. Context: The caller must lock whatever is referencing the entries to avoid race, and the entries must already have a swap count > 1. Typically, forking will need to copy the page table and hence needs to increase the swap count of the entries in the table. The page table is locked while referencing the swap entries, so the entries all have a swap count > 1 and can't be freed. Hibernation subsystem is a bit different, so two special wrappers are here: - swap_alloc_hibernation_slot() - Allocate one entry from one device. - swap_free_hibernation_slot() - Free one entry allocated by the above helper. All hibernation entries are exclusive to the hibernation subsystem and should not interact with ordinary swap routines. By separating the workflows, it will be possible to bind folio more tightly with swap cache and get rid of the SWAP_HAS_CACHE as a temporary pin. PM: EM: Rename em.yaml to dev-energymodel.yaml
The EM YNL specification used many acronyms, including ‘em’, ‘pd’, ‘ps’, etc. While the acronyms are short and convenient, they could be confusing. So, let’s spell them out to be more specific. The following changes were made in the spec. Note that the protocol name cannot exceed GENL_NAMSIZ (16). em -> dev-energymodel pds -> perf-domains pd -> perf-domain pd-id -> perf-domain-id pd-table -> perf-table ps -> perf-state get-pds -> get-perf-domains get-pd-table -> get-perf-table pd-created -> perf-domain-created pd-updated -> perf-domain-updated pd-deleted -> perf-domain-deleted In addition. doc strings were added to the spec. based on the comments in energy_model.h. Two flag attributes (perf-state-flags and perf-domain-flags) were added for easily interpreting the bit flags. Finally, the autogenerated files and em_netlink.c were updated accordingly to reflect the name changes. PM: EM: Fix memory leak in em_create_pd() error path
When ida_alloc() fails in em_create_pd(), the function returns without
freeing the previously allocated 'pd' structure, leading to a memory leak.
The 'pd' pointer is allocated either at line 436 (for CPU devices with
cpumask) or line 442 (for other devices) using kzalloc().
Additionally, the function incorrectly returns -ENOMEM when ida_alloc()
fails, ignoring the actual error code returned by ida_alloc(), which can
fail for reasons other than memory exhaustion.
Fix both issues by:
1. Freeing the 'pd' structure with kfree() when ida_alloc() fails
2. Returning the actual error code from ida_alloc() instead of -ENOMEM
This ensures proper cleanup on the error path and accurate error reporting.

PM: hibernate: Fix crash when freeing invalid crypto compressor
When crypto_alloc_acomp() fails, it returns an ERR_PTR value, not NULL.
The cleanup code in save_compressed_image() and load_compressed_image()
unconditionally calls crypto_free_acomp() without checking for ERR_PTR,
which causes crypto_acomp_tfm() to dereference an invalid pointer and
crash the kernel.
This can be triggered when the compression algorithm is unavailable
(e.g., CONFIG_CRYPTO_LZO not enabled).
Fix by adding IS_ERR_OR_NULL() checks before calling crypto_free_acomp()
and acomp_request_free(), similar to the existing kthread_stop() check.

PM: sleep: Do not flag runtime PM workqueue as freezable
Till now, the runtime PM workqueue has been flagged as freezable, so it does not process work items during system-wide PM transitions like system suspend and resume. The original reason to do that was to reduce the likelihood of runtime PM getting in the way of system-wide PM processing, but now it is mostly an optimization because (1) runtime suspend of devices is prevented by bumping up their runtime PM usage counters in device_prepare() and (2) device drivers are expected to disable runtime PM for the devices handled by them before they embark on system-wide PM activities that may change the state of the hardware or otherwise interfere with runtime PM. However, it prevents asynchronous runtime resume of devices from working during system-wide PM transitions, which is confusing because synchronous runtime resume is not prevented at the same time, and it also sometimes turns out to be problematic. For example, it has been reported that blk_queue_enter() may deadlock during a system suspend transition because of the pm_request_resume() usage in it [1]. It may also deadlock during a system resume transition in a similar way. That happens because the asynchronous runtime resume of the given device is not processed due to the freezing of the runtime PM workqueue. While it may be better to address this particular issue in the block layer, the very presence of it means that similar problems may be expected to occur elsewhere. For this reason, remove the WQ_FREEZABLE flag from the runtime PM workqueue and make device_suspend_late() use the generic variant of pm_runtime_disable() that will carry out runtime PM of the device synchronously if there is pending resume work for it. Also update the comment before the pm_runtime_disable() call in device_suspend_late(), to document the fact that the runtime PM should not be expected to work for the device until the end of device_resume_early(), and update the related documentation. This change may, even though it is not expected to, uncover some latent issues related to queuing up asynchronous runtime resume work items during system suspend or hibernation. However, they should be limited to the interference between runtime resume and system-wide PM callbacks in the cases when device drivers start to handle system-wide PM before disabling runtime PM as described above. PM: QoS: Introduce a CPU system wakeup QoS limit
Some platforms supports multiple low power states for CPUs that can be used when entering system-wide suspend. Currently we are always selecting the deepest possible state for the CPUs, which can break the system wakeup latency constraint that may be required for a use case. Let's take the first step towards addressing this problem, by introducing an interface for user space, that allows us to specify the CPU system wakeup QoS limit. Subsequent changes will start taking into account the new QoS limit. PM: sleep: Add support for wakeup during filesystem sync
Add helper function pm_sleep_fs_sync() and related data structures as a preparation for allowing system suspend and hibernation to be aborted by wakeup events while syncing file systems. The new function, to be called by the suspend process in order to sync file systems, uses a dedicated ordered workqueue to run ksys_sync_helper() in parallel with the calling process. Next, it waits for the completion of the filesystem sync and periodically checks if any system wakeup events are pending, in which case it will return an error. If that happens while the filesystem sync is still in progress, it will continue, possibly after pm_sleep_fs_sync() has returned, and if that function is called again before the sync is complete, a new work item to run ksys_sync_helper() again will be queued (and waited for) to increase the likelihood of writing all of the dirty pages in memory back to persistent storage. PM: hibernate: make compression threads configurable
The number of compression/decompression threads has a direct impact on
hibernate image generation and resume latency. Using more threads can
reduce overall resume time, but on systems with fewer CPU cores it may
also introduce contention and reduce efficiency.
Performance was evaluated on an 8-core ARM system, averaged over 10 runs:
Threads Hibernate(s) Resume(s)
--------------------------------
3 12.14 18.86
4 12.28 17.48
5 11.09 16.77
6 11.08 16.44
With 5–6 threads, resume latency improves by approximately 12% compared
to the default 3-thread configuration, with negligible impact on
hibernate time.
Introduce a new kernel parameter `hibernate_compression_threads=` that
allows users and integrators to tune the number of
compression/decompression threads at boot. This provides a way to
balance performance and CPU utilization across a wide range of hardware
without recompiling the kernel.
