4363264111 uprobe: Do not emulate/sstep original instruction when ip is changed
If uprobe handler changes instruction pointer we still execute single
step) or emulate the original instruction and increment the (new) ip
with its length.

This makes the new instruction pointer bogus and application will
likely crash on illegal instruction execution.

If user decided to take execution elsewhere, it makes little sense
to execute the original instruction, so let's skip it.

7384893d97 bpf: Allow uprobe program to change context registers
Currently uprobe (BPF_PROG_TYPE_KPROBE) program can't write to the
context registers data. While this makes sense for kprobe attachments,
for uprobe attachment it might make sense to be able to change user
space registers to alter application execution.

Since uprobe and kprobe programs share the same type (BPF_PROG_TYPE_KPROBE),
we can't deny write access to context during the program load. We need
to check on it during program attachment to see if it's going to be
kprobe or uprobe.

Storing the program's write attempt to context and checking on it
during the attachment.

18dbcbfabf perf: Fix the POLL_HUP delivery breakage
The event_limit can be set by the PERF_EVENT_IOC_REFRESH to limit the
number of events. When the event_limit reaches 0, the POLL_HUP signal
should be sent. But it's missed.

The corresponding counter should be stopped when the event_limit reaches
0. It was implemented in the ARCH-specific code. However, since the
commit 9734e25fbf ("perf: Fix the throttle logic for a group"), all
the ARCH-specific code has been moved to the generic code. The code to
handle the event_limit was lost.

Add the event->pmu->stop(event, 0); back.

edd3cb05c0 copy_process: pass clone_flags as u64 across calltree
With the introduction of clone3 in commit 7f192e3cd3 ("fork: add
clone3") the effective bit width of clone_flags on all architectures was
increased from 32-bit to 64-bit, with a new type of u64 for the flags.
However, for most consumers of clone_flags the interface was not
changed from the previous type of unsigned long.

While this works fine as long as none of the new 64-bit flag bits
(CLONE_CLEAR_SIGHAND and CLONE_INTO_CGROUP) are evaluated, this is still
undesirable in terms of the principle of least surprise.

Thus, this commit fixes all relevant interfaces of callees to
sys_clone3/copy_process (excluding the architecture-specific
copy_thread) to consistently pass clone_flags as u64, so that
no truncation to 32-bit integers occurs on 32-bit architectures.

ba2bfc97b4 uprobes/x86: Add support to optimize uprobes
Putting together all the previously added pieces to support optimized
uprobes on top of 5-byte nop instruction.

The current uprobe execution goes through following:

  - installs breakpoint instruction over original instruction
  - exception handler hit and calls related uprobe consumers
  - and either simulates original instruction or does out of line single step
    execution of it
  - returns to user space

The optimized uprobe path does following:

  - checks the original instruction is 5-byte nop (plus other checks)
  - adds (or uses existing) user space trampoline with uprobe syscall
  - overwrites original instruction (5-byte nop) with call to user space
    trampoline
  - the user space trampoline executes uprobe syscall that calls related uprobe
    consumers
  - trampoline returns back to next instruction

This approach won't speed up all uprobes as it's limited to using nop5 as
original instruction, but we plan to use nop5 as USDT probe instruction
(which currently uses single byte nop) and speed up the USDT probes.

The arch_uprobe_optimize triggers the uprobe optimization and is called after
first uprobe hit. I originally had it called on uprobe installation but then
it clashed with elf loader, because the user space trampoline was added in a
place where loader might need to put elf segments, so I decided to do it after
first uprobe hit when loading is done.

The uprobe is un-optimized in arch specific set_orig_insn call.

The instruction overwrite is x86 arch specific and needs to go through 3 updates:
(on top of nop5 instruction)

  - write int3 into 1st byte
  - write last 4 bytes of the call instruction
  - update the call instruction opcode

And cleanup goes though similar reverse stages:

  - overwrite call opcode with breakpoint (int3)
  - write last 4 bytes of the nop5 instruction
  - write the nop5 first instruction byte

We do not unmap and release uprobe trampoline when it's no longer needed,
because there's no easy way to make sure none of the threads is still
inside the trampoline. But we do not waste memory, because there's just
single page for all the uprobe trampoline mappings.

We do waste frame on page mapping for every 4GB by keeping the uprobe
trampoline page mapped, but that seems ok.

We take the benefit from the fact that set_swbp and set_orig_insn are
called under mmap_write_lock(mm), so we can use the current instruction
as the state the uprobe is in - nop5/breakpoint/call trampoline -
and decide the needed action (optimize/un-optimize) based on that.

Attaching the speed up from benchs/run_bench_uprobes.sh script:

56101b69c9 uprobes/x86: Add uprobe syscall to speed up uprobe
Adding new uprobe syscall that calls uprobe handlers for given
'breakpoint' address.

The idea is that the 'breakpoint' address calls the user space
trampoline which executes the uprobe syscall.

The syscall handler reads the return address of the initial call
to retrieve the original 'breakpoint' address. With this address
we find the related uprobe object and call its consumers.

Adding the arch_uprobe_trampoline_mapping function that provides
uprobe trampoline mapping. This mapping is backed with one global
page initialized at __init time and shared by the all the mapping
instances.

We do not allow to execute uprobe syscall if the caller is not
from uprobe trampoline mapping.

The uprobe syscall ensures the consumer (bpf program) sees registers
values in the state before the trampoline was called.

The uprobe trampoline needs to be callable/reachable from the probed address,
so while searching for available address we use is_reachable_by_call function
to decide if the uprobe trampoline is callable from the probe address.

All uprobe_trampoline objects are stored in uprobes_state object and are
cleaned up when the process mm_struct goes down. Adding new arch hooks
for that, because this change is x86_64 specific.

Locking is provided by callers in following changes.

ec46350fe1 uprobes: Add is_register argument to uprobe_write and uprobe_write_opcode
The uprobe_write has special path to restore the original page when we
write original instruction back. This happens when uprobe_write detects
that we want to write anything else but breakpoint instruction.

Moving the detection away and passing it to uprobe_write as argument,
so it's possible to write different instructions (other than just
breakpoint and rest).

33d7b2beaf uprobes: Add uprobe_write function
Adding uprobe_write function that does what uprobe_write_opcode did
so far, but allows to pass verify callback function that checks the
memory location before writing the opcode.

It will be used in following changes to implement specific checking
logic for instruction update.

The uprobe_write_opcode now calls uprobe_write with verify_opcode as
the verify callback.

7769cb177b uprobes: Remove breakpoint in unapply_uprobe under mmap_write_lock
Currently unapply_uprobe takes mmap_read_lock, but it might call
remove_breakpoint which eventually changes user pages.

Current code writes either breakpoint or original instruction, so it can
go away with read lock as explained in here [1]. But with the upcoming
change that writes multiple instructions on the probed address we need
to ensure that any update to mm's pages is exclusive.

b64fdd422a perf: Avoid undefined behavior from stopping/starting inactive events
Calling pmu->start()/stop() on perf events in PERF_EVENT_STATE_OFF can
leave event->hw.idx at -1. When PMU drivers later attempt to use this
negative index as a shift exponent in bitwise operations, it leads to UBSAN
shift-out-of-bounds reports.

The issue is a logical flaw in how event groups handle throttling when some
members are intentionally disabled. Based on the analysis and the
reproducer provided by Mark Rutland (this issue on both arm64 and x86-64).

The scenario unfolds as follows:

 1. A group leader event is configured with a very aggressive sampling
    period (e.g., sample_period = 1). This causes frequent interrupts and
    triggers the throttling mechanism.
 2. A child event in the same group is created in a disabled state
    (.disabled = 1). This event remains in PERF_EVENT_STATE_OFF.
    Since it hasn't been scheduled onto the PMU, its event->hw.idx remains
    initialized at -1.
 3. When throttling occurs, perf_event_throttle_group() and later
    perf_event_unthrottle_group() iterate through all siblings, including
    the disabled child event.
 4. perf_event_throttle()/unthrottle() are called on this inactive child
    event, which then call event->pmu->start()/stop().
 5. The PMU driver receives the event with hw.idx == -1 and attempts to
    use it as a shift exponent. e.g., in macros like PMCNTENSET(idx),
    leading to the UBSAN report.

The throttling mechanism attempts to start/stop events that are not
actively scheduled on the hardware.

Move the state check into perf_event_throttle()/perf_event_unthrottle() so
that inactive events are skipped entirely. This ensures only active events
with a valid hw.idx are processed, preventing undefined behavior and
silencing UBSAN warnings. The corrected check ensures true before
proceeding with PMU operations.

The problem can be reproduced with the syzkaller reproducer:

b024d7b56c perf/core: Prevent VMA split of buffer mappings
The perf mmap code is careful about mmap()'ing the user page with the
ringbuffer and additionally the auxiliary buffer, when the event supports
it. Once the first mapping is established, subsequent mapping have to use
the same offset and the same size in both cases. The reference counting for
the ringbuffer and the auxiliary buffer depends on this being correct.

Though perf does not prevent that a related mapping is split via mmap(2),
munmap(2) or mremap(2). A split of a VMA results in perf_mmap_open() calls,
which take reference counts, but then the subsequent perf_mmap_close()
calls are not longer fulfilling the offset and size checks. This leads to
reference count leaks.

As perf already has the requirement for subsequent mappings to match the
initial mapping, the obvious consequence is that VMA splits, caused by
resizing of a mapping or partial unmapping, have to be prevented.

Implement the vm_operations_struct::may_split() callback and return
unconditionally -EINVAL.

That ensures that the mapping offsets and sizes cannot be changed after the
fact. Remapping to a different fixed address with the same size is still
possible as it takes the references for the new mapping and drops those of
the old mapping.

f74b9f4ba6 perf/core: Handle buffer mapping fail correctly in perf_mmap()
After successful allocation of a buffer or a successful attachment to an
existing buffer perf_mmap() tries to map the buffer read only into the page
table. If that fails, the already set up page table entries are zapped, but
the other perf specific side effects of that failure are not handled.  The
calling code just cleans up the VMA and does not invoke perf_mmap_close().

This leaks reference counts, corrupts user->vm accounting and also results
in an unbalanced invocation of event::event_mapped().

Cure this by moving the event::event_mapped() invocation before the
map_range() call so that on map_range() failure perf_mmap_close() can be
invoked without causing an unbalanced event::event_unmapped() call.

perf_mmap_close() undoes the reference counts and eventually frees buffers.

aa644c4052 uprobes: revert ref_ctr_offset in uprobe_unregister error path
There's error path that could lead to inactive uprobe:

  1) uprobe_register succeeds - updates instruction to int3 and
     changes ref_ctr from 0 to 1
  2) uprobe_unregister fails  - int3 stays in place, but ref_ctr
     is changed to 0 (it's not restored to 1 in the fail path)
     uprobe is leaked
  3) another uprobe_register comes and re-uses the leaked uprobe
     and succeds - but int3 is already in place, so ref_ctr update
     is skipped and it stays 0 - uprobe CAN NOT be triggered now
  4) uprobe_unregister fails because ref_ctr value is unexpected

Fix this by reverting the updated ref_ctr value back to 1 in step 2),
which is the case when uprobe_unregister fails (int3 stays in place), but
we have already updated refctr.

The new scenario will go as follows:

  1) uprobe_register succeeds - updates instruction to int3 and
     changes ref_ctr from 0 to 1
  2) uprobe_unregister fails  - int3 stays in place and ref_ctr
     is reverted to 1..  uprobe is leaked
  3) another uprobe_register comes and re-uses the leaked uprobe
     and succeds - but int3 is already in place, so ref_ctr update
     is skipped and it stays 1 - uprobe CAN be triggered now
  4) uprobe_unregister succeeds

6b4a80e424 mm: filter zone device pages returned from folio_walk_start()
Previously dax pages were skipped by the pagewalk code as pud_special() or
vm_normal_page{_pmd}() would be false for DAX pages.  Now that dax pages
are refcounted normally that is no longer the case, so the pagewalk code
will start returning them.

Most callers already explicitly filter for DAX or zone device pages so
don't need updating.  However some don't, so add checks to those callers.

Swap the early exit tests in order not to hit WARN_ON_ONCE().

ba677dbe77 perf: Revert to requiring CAP_SYS_ADMIN for uprobes
Jann reports that uprobes can be used destructively when used in the
middle of an instruction. The kernel only verifies there is a valid
instruction at the requested offset, but due to variable instruction
length cannot determine if this is an instruction as seen by the
intended execution stream.

Additionally, Mark Rutland notes that on architectures that mix data
in the text segment (like arm64), a similar things can be done if the
data word is 'mistaken' for an instruction.

As such, require CAP_SYS_ADMIN for uprobes.

7b4c5a3754 perf/core: Fix the WARN_ON_ONCE is out of lock protected region

1476b21832 perf/aux: Fix pending disable flow when the AUX ring buffer overruns
If an AUX event overruns, the event core layer intends to disable the
event by setting the 'pending_disable' flag. Unfortunately, the event
is not actually disabled afterwards.

In commit:

  ca6c21327c ("perf: Fix missing SIGTRAPs")

the 'pending_disable' flag was changed to a boolean. However, the
AUX event code was not updated accordingly. The flag ends up holding a
CPU number. If this number is zero, the flag is taken as false and the
IRQ work is never triggered.

Later, with commit:

  2b84def990 ("perf: Split __perf_pending_irq() out of perf_pending_irq()")

a new IRQ work 'pending_disable_irq' was introduced to handle event
disabling. The AUX event path was not updated to kick off the work queue.

To fix this bug, when an AUX ring buffer overrun is detected, call
perf_event_disable_inatomic() to initiate the pending disable flow.

Also update the outdated comment for setting the flag, to reflect the
boolean values (0 or 1).

bc4394e5e7 perf: Fix the throttle error of some clock events
Both ARM and IBM CI reports RCU stall, which can be reproduced by the
below perf command.
  perf record -a -e cpu-clock -- sleep 2

The issue is introduced by the generic throttle patch set, which
unconditionally invoke the event_stop() when throttle is triggered.

The cpu-clock and task-clock are two special SW events, which rely on
the hrtimer. The throttle is invoked in the hrtimer handler. The
event_stop()->hrtimer_cancel() waits for the handler to finish, which is
a deadlock. Instead of invoking the stop(), the HRTIMER_NORESTART should
be used to stop the timer.

There may be two ways to fix it:
 - Introduce a PMU flag to track the case. Avoid the event_stop in
   perf_event_throttle() if the flag is detected.

   The new flag was thought to be an overkill for the issue.
 - Add a check in the event_stop. Return immediately if the throttle is
   invoked in the hrtimer handler. Rely on the existing HRTIMER_NORESTART
   method to stop the timer.

The latter is implemented here.

Move event->hw.interrupts = MAX_INTERRUPTS before the stop(). It makes
the order the same as perf_event_unthrottle(). Except the patch, no one
checks the hw.interrupts in the stop(). There is no impact from the
order change.

When stops in the throttle, the event should not be updated,
stop(event, 0). But the cpu_clock_event_stop() doesn't handle the flag.
In logic, it's wrong. But it didn't bring any problems with the old
code, because the stop() was not invoked when handling the throttle.

3172fb9866 perf/core: Fix WARN in perf_cgroup_switch()
There may be concurrency between perf_cgroup_switch and
perf_cgroup_event_disable. Consider the following scenario: after a new
perf cgroup event is created on CPU0, the new event may not trigger
a reprogramming, causing ctx->is_active to be 0. In this case, when CPU1
disables this perf event, it executes __perf_remove_from_context->
list _del_event->perf_cgroup_event_disable on CPU1, which causes a race
with perf_cgroup_switch running on CPU0.

The following describes the details of this concurrency scenario:

3b7a34aebb perf: Fix dangling cgroup pointer in cpuctx
Commit a3c3c6667("perf/core: Fix child_total_time_enabled accounting
bug at task exit") moves the event->state update to before
list_del_event(). This makes the event->state test in list_del_event()
always false; never calling perf_cgroup_event_disable().

As a result, cpuctx->cgrp won't be cleared properly; causing havoc.

While chasing down a missing perf_cgroup_event_disable() elsewhere,
Leo Yan found that both perf_put_aux_event() and
perf_remove_sibling_event() were also missing one.

Specifically, the rule is that events that switch to OFF,ERROR need to
call perf_cgroup_event_disable().

Unify the disable paths to ensure this.

4f6fc78212 perf: Fix sample vs do_exit()
Baisheng Gao reported an ARM64 crash, which Mark decoded as being a
synchronous external abort -- most likely due to trying to access
MMIO in bad ways.

The crash further shows perf trying to do a user stack sample while in
exit_mmap()'s tlb_finish_mmu() -- i.e. while tearing down the address
space it is trying to access.

It turns out that we stop perf after we tear down the userspace mm; a
receipie for disaster, since perf likes to access userspace for
various reasons.

Flip this order by moving up where we stop perf in do_exit().

Additionally, harden PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN and PERF_SAMPLE_STACK_USER
to abort when the current task does not have an mm (exit_mm() makes
sure to set current->mm = NULL; before commencing with the actual
teardown). Such that CPU wide events don't trip on this same problem.

   PAGEMAP_SCAN ioctl against /proc/pid/pagemap.  This permits CRIU to more
   efficiently get at the info about guard regions.
 
 - The 2 patch series "Fix parameter passed to page_mapcount_is_type()"
   from Gavin Shan implements that fix.  No runtime effect is expected
   because validate_page_before_insert() happens to fix up this error.

   compaction. In a simple test case, the reduction of a guest VM's
   memory consumption was dramatic.

 - "Minor cleanups and improvements to swap freeing code" from Kemeng
   Shi provides some code cleaups and a small efficiency improvement to
   this part of our swap handling code.

 - "ptrace: introduce PTRACE_SET_SYSCALL_INFO API" from Dmitry Levin
   adds the ability for a ptracer to modify syscalls arguments. At this
   time we can alter only "system call information that are used by
   strace system call tampering, namely, syscall number, syscall
   arguments, and syscall return value.

   This series should have been incorporated into mm.git's "non-MM"
   branch, but I goofed.

 - "fs/proc: extend the PAGEMAP_SCAN ioctl to report guard regions" from
   Andrei Vagin extends the info returned by the PAGEMAP_SCAN ioctl
   against /proc/pid/pagemap. This permits CRIU to more efficiently get
   at the info about guard regions.

 - "Fix parameter passed to page_mapcount_is_type()" from Gavin Shan
   implements that fix. No runtime effect is expected because
   validate_page_before_insert() happens to fix up this error.

 - "kernel/events/uprobes: uprobe_write_opcode() rewrite" from David
   Hildenbrand basically brings uprobe text poking into the current
   decade. Remove a bunch of hand-rolled implementation in favor of
   using more current facilities.

 - "mm/ptdump: Drop assumption that pxd_val() is u64" from Anshuman
   Khandual provides enhancements and generalizations to the pte dumping
   code. This might be needed when 128-bit Page Table Descriptors are
   enabled for ARM.

 - "Always call constructor for kernel page tables" from Kevin Brodsky
   ensures that the ctor/dtor is always called for kernel pgtables, as
   it already is for user pgtables.

   This permits the addition of more functionality such as "insert hooks
   to protect page tables". This change does result in various
   architectures performing unnecesary work, but this is fixed up where
   it is anticipated to occur.

 - "Rust support for mm_struct, vm_area_struct, and mmap" from Alice
   Ryhl adds plumbing to permit Rust access to core MM structures.

 - "fix incorrectly disallowed anonymous VMA merges" from Lorenzo
   Stoakes takes advantage of some VMA merging opportunities which we've
   been missing for 15 years.

 - "mm/madvise: batch tlb flushes for MADV_DONTNEED and MADV_FREE" from
   SeongJae Park optimizes process_madvise()'s TLB flushing.

   Instead of flushing each address range in the provided iovec, we
   batch the flushing across all the iovec entries. The syscall's cost
   was approximately halved with a microbenchmark which was designed to
   load this particular operation.

 - "Track node vacancy to reduce worst case allocation counts" from
   Sidhartha Kumar makes the maple tree smarter about its node
   preallocation.

   stress-ng mmap performance increased by single-digit percentages and
   the amount of unnecessarily preallocated memory was dramaticelly
   reduced.

 - "mm/gup: Minor fix, cleanup and improvements" from Baoquan He removes
   a few unnecessary things which Baoquan noted when reading the code.

 - ""Enhance sysfs handling for memory hotplug in weighted interleave"
   from Rakie Kim "enhances the weighted interleave policy in the memory
   management subsystem by improving sysfs handling, fixing memory
   leaks, and introducing dynamic sysfs updates for memory hotplug
   support". Fixes things on error paths which we are unlikely to hit.

 - "mm/damon: auto-tune DAMOS for NUMA setups including tiered memory"
   from SeongJae Park introduces new DAMOS quota goal metrics which
   eliminate the manual tuning which is required when utilizing DAMON
   for memory tiering.

 - "mm/vmalloc.c: code cleanup and improvements" from Baoquan He
   provides cleanups and small efficiency improvements which Baoquan
   found via code inspection.

 - "vmscan: enforce mems_effective during demotion" from Gregory Price
   changes reclaim to respect cpuset.mems_effective during demotion when
   possible. because presently, reclaim explicitly ignores
   cpuset.mems_effective when demoting, which may cause the cpuset
   settings to violated.

   This is useful for isolating workloads on a multi-tenant system from
   certain classes of memory more consistently.

 - "Clean up split_huge_pmd_locked() and remove unnecessary folio
   pointers" from Gavin Guo provides minor cleanups and efficiency gains
   in in the huge page splitting and migrating code.

 - "Use kmem_cache for memcg alloc" from Huan Yang creates a slab cache
   for `struct mem_cgroup', yielding improved memory utilization.

 - "add max arg to swappiness in memory.reclaim and lru_gen" from
   Zhongkun He adds a new "max" argument to the "swappiness=" argument
   for memory.reclaim MGLRU's lru_gen.

   This directs proactive reclaim to reclaim from only anon folios
   rather than file-backed folios.

 - "kexec: introduce Kexec HandOver (KHO)" from Mike Rapoport is the
   first step on the path to permitting the kernel to maintain existing
   VMs while replacing the host kernel via file-based kexec. At this
   time only memblock's reserve_mem is preserved.

 - "mm: Introduce for_each_valid_pfn()" from David Woodhouse provides
   and uses a smarter way of looping over a pfn range. By skipping
   ranges of invalid pfns.

 - "sched/numa: Skip VMA scanning on memory pinned to one NUMA node via
   cpuset.mems" from Libo Chen removes a lot of pointless VMA scanning
   when a task is pinned a single NUMA mode.

   Dramatic performance benefits were seen in some real world cases.

 - "JFS: Implement migrate_folio for jfs_metapage_aops" from Shivank
   Garg addresses a warning which occurs during memory compaction when
   using JFS.

 - "move all VMA allocation, freeing and duplication logic to mm" from
   Lorenzo Stoakes moves some VMA code from kernel/fork.c into the more
   appropriate mm/vma.c.

 - "mm, swap: clean up swap cache mapping helper" from Kairui Song
   provides code consolidation and cleanups related to the folio_index()
   function.

 - "mm/gup: Cleanup memfd_pin_folios()" from Vishal Moola does that.

 - "memcg: Fix test_memcg_min/low test failures" from Waiman Long
   addresses some bogus failures which are being reported by the
   test_memcontrol selftest.

 - "eliminate mmap() retry merge, add .mmap_prepare hook" from Lorenzo
   Stoakes commences the deprecation of file_operations.mmap() in favor
   of the new file_operations.mmap_prepare().

   The latter is more restrictive and prevents drivers from messing with
   things in ways which, amongst other problems, may defeat VMA merging.

 - "memcg: decouple memcg and objcg stocks"" from Shakeel Butt decouples
   the per-cpu memcg charge cache from the objcg's one.

   This is a step along the way to making memcg and objcg charging
   NMI-safe, which is a BPF requirement.

 - "mm/damon: minor fixups and improvements for code, tests, and
   documents" from SeongJae Park is yet another batch of miscellaneous
   DAMON changes. Fix and improve minor problems in code, tests and
   documents.

 - "memcg: make memcg stats irq safe" from Shakeel Butt converts memcg
   stats to be irq safe. Another step along the way to making memcg
   charging and stats updates NMI-safe, a BPF requirement.

 - "Let unmap_hugepage_range() and several related functions take folio
   instead of page" from Fan Ni provides folio conversions in the
   hugetlb code.

e800ac5120 perf: Only dump the throttle log for the leader
The PERF_RECORD_THROTTLE records are dumped for all throttled events.
It's not necessary for group events, which are throttled altogether.

Optimize it by only dump the throttle log for the leader.

The sample right after the THROTTLE record must be generated by the
actual target event. It is good enough for the perf tool to locate the
actual target event.

The current throttle logic doesn't work well with a group, e.g., the
following sampling-read case.

The second cycles event has a much larger value than the first cycles
event in the same group.

The current throttle logic in the generic code only logs the THROTTLE
event. It relies on the specific driver implementation to disable
events. For all ARCHs, the implementation is similar. Only the event is
disabled, rather than the group.

The logic to disable the group should be generic for all ARCHs. Add the
logic in the generic code. The following patch will remove the buggy
driver-specific implementation.

The throttle only happens when an event is overflowed. Stop the entire
group when any event in the group triggers the throttle.
The MAX_INTERRUPTS is set to all throttle events.

The unthrottled could happen in 3 places.
- event/group sched. All events in the group are scheduled one by one.
  All of them will be unthrottled eventually. Nothing needs to be
  changed.
- The perf_adjust_freq_unthr_events for each tick. Needs to restart the
  group altogether.
- The __perf_event_period(). The whole group needs to be restarted
  altogether as well.

With the fix,

18049c8cff perf/aux: Allocate non-contiguous AUX pages by default
perf always allocates contiguous AUX pages based on aux_watermark.
However, this contiguous allocation doesn't benefit all PMUs. For
instance, ARM SPE and TRBE operate with virtual pages, and Coresight
ETR allocates a separate buffer. For these PMUs, allocating contiguous
AUX pages unnecessarily exacerbates memory fragmentation. This
fragmentation can prevent their use on long-running devices.

This patch modifies the perf driver to be memory-friendly by default,
by allocating non-contiguous AUX pages. For PMUs requiring contiguous
pages (Intel BTS and some Intel PT), the existing
PERF_PMU_CAP_AUX_NO_SG capability can be used. For PMUs that don't
require but can benefit from contiguous pages (some Intel PT), a new
capability, PERF_PMU_CAP_AUX_PREFER_LARGE, is added to maintain their
existing behavior.

6e3092d788 kernel/events/uprobes: uprobe_write_opcode() rewrite
uprobe_write_opcode() does some pretty low-level things that really, it
shouldn't be doing: for example, manually breaking COW by allocating
anonymous folios and replacing mapped pages.

Further, it does seem to do some shaky things: for example, writing to
possible COW-shared anonymous pages or zapping anonymous pages that might
be pinned.  We're also not taking care of uffd, uffd-wp, softdirty ... 
although rather corner cases here.  Let's just get it right like ordinary
ptrace writes would.

Let's rewrite the code, leaving COW-breaking to core-MM, triggered by
FOLL_FORCE|FOLL_WRITE (note that the code was already using FOLL_FORCE).

We'll use GUP to lookup/faultin the page and break COW if required.  Then,
we'll walk the page tables using a folio_walk to perform our page
modification atomically by temporarily unmap the PTE + flushing the TLB.

Likely, we could avoid the temporary unmap in case we can just atomically
write the instruction, but that will be a separate project.

Unfortunately, we still have to implement the zapping logic manually,
because we only want to zap in specific circumstances (e.g., page content
identical).

Note that we can now handle large folios (compound pages) and the shared
zeropage just fine, so drop these checks.

b56e644665 kernel/events/uprobes: pass VMA instead of MM to remove_breakpoint()
Patch series "kernel/events/uprobes: uprobe_write_opcode() rewrite", v3.

Currently, uprobe_write_opcode() implements COW-breaking manually, which
is really far from ideal.  Further, there is interest in supporting
uprobes on hugetlb pages [1], and leaving at least the COW-breaking to the
core will make this much easier.

Also, I think the current code doesn't really handle some things properly
(see patch #3) when replacing/zapping pages.

Let's rewrite it, to leave COW-breaking to the fault handler, and handle
registration/unregistration by temporarily unmapping the anonymous page,
modifying it, and mapping it again.  We still have to implement zapping of
anonymous pages ourselves, unfortunately.

We could look into not performing the temporary unmapping if we can
perform the write atomically, which would likely also make adding hugetlb
support a lot easier.  But, limited (e.g., only PMD/PUD) hugetlb support
could be added on top of this with some tweaking.

Note that we now won't have to allocate another anonymous folio when
unregistering (which will be beneficial for hugetlb as well), we can
simply modify the already-mapped one from the registration (if any).  When
registering a uprobe, we'll first trigger a ptrace-like write fault to
break COW, to then modify the already-mapped page.

Briefly sanity tested with perf probes and with the bpf uprobes selftest.


This patch (of 3):

Pass VMA instead of MM to remove_breakpoint() and remove the "MM" argument
from install_breakpoint(), because it can easily be derived from the VMA.

881097c054 perf: Fix confusing aux iteration
While an event tears down all links to it as an aux, the iteration
happens on the event's group leader instead of the group itself.

If the event is a group leader, it has no effect because the event is
also its own group leader. But otherwise there would be a risk to detach
all the siblings events from the wrong group leader.

It just happens to work because each sibling's aux link is tested
against the right event before proceeding. Also the ctx lock is the same
for the events and their group leader so the iteration is safe.

Yet the iteration is confusing. Clarify the actual intent.

EVENT_TOMBSTONE on perf_event_wakeup() (including both ring buffer
and fasync uses).

The "easy" solution to 2) is to turn perf_event_wakeup() to wholefully
run under rcu_read_lock().

However because of 2), sanity would prescribe to make event::parent
an __rcu pointer and annotate each and every users to prove they are
reliable.

Propose an alternate solution and restore the stable pointer to the
parent until all its children have called _free_event() themselves to
avoid any further accident. Also revert the EVENT_TOMBSTONE design
that is mostly here to determine which caller of perf_event_exit_event()
must perform the refcount decrement on a child event matching the
increment in inherit_event().

Arrange instead for checking the attach state of an event prior to its
removal and decrement the refcount of the child accordingly.

22d38babb3 perf: Fix failing inherit_event() doing extra refcount decrement on parent
When inherit_event() fails after the child allocation but before the
parent refcount has been incremented, calling put_event() wrongly
decrements the reference to the parent, risking to free it too early.

Also pmu_get_event() can't be holding a reference to the child
concurrently at this point since it is under pmus_srcu critical section.

Fix it with restoring the deleted free_event() function and call it on
the failing child in order to free it directly under the verified
assumption that its refcount is only 1. The refcount to the parent is
then voluntarily omitted.

f51972e6f8 perf/core: Fix broken throttling when max_samples_per_tick=1
According to the throttling mechanism, the pmu interrupts number can not
exceed the max_samples_per_tick in one tick. But this mechanism is
ineffective when max_samples_per_tick=1, because the throttling check is
skipped during the first interrupt and only performed when the second
interrupt arrives.

Perhaps this bug may cause little influence in one tick, but if in a
larger time scale, the problem can not be underestimated.

When max_samples_per_tick = 1:

Commit:

  f4b07fd62d ("perf/core: Use POLLHUP for pinned events in error")

started to emit POLLHUP for pinned events in an error state.

But the POLLHUP is also used to signal events that the attached task is
terminated.  To distinguish pinned per-task events in the error state
it would need to check if the task is live.

Change it to POLLERR to make it clear.

.. it is now possible to hit put_event(EVENT_TOMBSTONE), which makes
the computer sad.

This also means that for the event->parent == EVENT_TOMBSTONE, the
put_event() matching inherit_event() has gone missing.

Previously this was done in perf_event_release_kernel() after calling
perf_remove_from_context(), but with it delegated to put_event(), this
case is now entirely missed, leading to leaks.

* If perf_event_free_task() has removed all the children from the parent list
  before perf_event_release_kernel() got a chance to even iterate them, then
  it's all good as there is no get_ctx() pending.

* If perf_event_release_kernel() iterates a child event, but it gets freed
  meanwhile by perf_event_free_task() while the mutexes are temporarily
  unlocked, it's all good because while locking again the ctx mutex,
  perf_event_release_kernel() observes TASK_TOMBSTONE.

* But if perf_event_release_kernel() frees the child event before

f6938a562a perf/core: Fix perf-stat / read()
In the zeal to adjust all event->state checks to include the new
REVOKED state, one adjustment was made in error. Notably it resulted
in read() on the perf filedesc to stop working for any state lower
than ERROR, specifically EXIT.

This leads to problems with (among others) perf-stat, which wants to
read the counts after a program has finished execution.

da916e96e2 perf: Make perf_pmu_unregister() useable
Previously it was only safe to call perf_pmu_unregister() if there
were no active events of that pmu around -- which was impossible to
guarantee since it races all sorts against perf_init_event().

Rework the whole thing by:

 - keeping track of all events for a given pmu

 - 'hiding' the pmu from perf_init_event()

 - waiting for the appropriate (s)rcu grace periods such that all
   prior references to the PMU will be completed

 - detaching all still existing events of that pmu (see first point)
   and moving them to a new REVOKED state.

 - actually freeing the pmu data.

Where notably the new REVOKED state must inhibit all event actions
from reaching code that wants to use event->pmu.

0a00a43b8c perf: Simplify child event tear-down
Currently perf_event_release_kernel() will iterate the child events and attempt
tear-down. However, it removes them from the child_list using list_move(),
notably skipping the state management done by perf_child_detach().

Crucially, it fails to clear PERF_ATTACH_CHILD, which opens the door for a
concurrent perf_remove_from_context() to race.

This way child_list management stays fully serialized using child_mutex.

signal hadn't managed to be sent before the file got closed:

running on the current task can always cancel a pending one, however
the wait / wake design is still subject to inverted dependencies when

Avoid a false-positive lockdep warning in the CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT=y
configuration when using write_seqcount_begin() in the uprobe timer
callback by using raw_write_* APIs.

Uprobe's use of timer callback is guaranteed to not race with itself
for a given uprobe_task, and as such seqcount's insistence on having
preemption disabled on the writer side is irrelevant. So switch to
raw_ variants of seqcount API instead of disabling preemption unnecessarily.

Also, point out in the comments more explicitly why we use seqcount
despite our reader side being rather simple and never retrying. We favor
well-maintained kernel primitive in favor of open-coding our own memory
barriers.

0ba3a4ab76 perf/core: Fix WARN_ON(!ctx) in __free_event() for partial init
Move the get_ctx(child_ctx) call and the child_event->ctx assignment to
occur immediately after the child event is allocated. Ensure that
child_event->ctx is non-NULL before any subsequent error path within
inherit_event calls free_event(), satisfying the assumptions of the
cleanup code.

Details:

There's no clear Fixes tag, because this bug is a side-effect of
multiple interacting commits over time (up to 15 years old), not
a single regression.

The code initially incremented refcount then assigned context
immediately after the child_event was created. Later, an early
validity check for child_event was added before the
refcount/assignment. Even later, a WARN_ON_ONCE() cleanup check was
added, assuming event->ctx is valid if the pmu_ctx is valid.
The problem is that the WARN_ON_ONCE() could trigger after the initial
check passed but before child_event->ctx was assigned, violating its
precondition. The solution is to assign child_event->ctx right after
its initial validation. This ensures the context exists for any
subsequent checks or cleanup routines, resolving the WARN_ON_ONCE().

To resolve it, defer the refcount update and child_event->ctx assignment
directly after child_event->pmu_ctx is set but before checking if the
parent event is orphaned. The cleanup routine depends on
event->pmu_ctx being non-NULL before it verifies event->ctx is
non-NULL. This also maintains the author's original intent of passing
in child_ctx to find_get_pmu_context before its refcount/assignment.

Provide support to mseal the uprobe mapping.

Unlike other system mappings, the uprobe mapping is not established during
program startup.  However, its lifetime is the same as the process's
lifetime.  It could be sealed from creation.

a3c3c66670 perf/core: Fix child_total_time_enabled accounting bug at task exit
The perf events code fails to account for total_time_enabled of
inactive events.

Here is a failure case for accounting total_time_enabled for
CPU PMU events:

The two events above are opened on two different CPU PMUs, for example,
each event is opened for a cluster in an Arm big.LITTLE system, they
will never run on the same CPU.  In theory, the total enabled time should
be same for both events, as two events are opened and closed together.

As the result show, the two events' total enabled time including
child event is different (2289429840 vs 1950025700).

This is because child events are not accounted properly
if a event is INACTIVE state when the task exits:

  perf_event_exit_event()
   `> perf_remove_from_context()
     `> __perf_remove_from_context()
       `> perf_child_detach()   -> Accumulate child_total_time_enabled
         `> list_del_event()    -> Update child event's time

The problem is the time accumulation happens prior to child event's
time updating. Thus, it misses to account the last period's time when
the event exits.

The perf core layer follows the rule that timekeeping is tied to state
change. To address the issue, make __perf_remove_from_context()
handle the task exit case by passing 'DETACH_EXIT' to it and
invoke perf_event_state() for state alongside with accounting the time.

Then, perf_child_detach() populates the time into the parent's time metrics.

After this patch, the bug is fixed:

   the callback pointer. This turned out to be suboptimal for the upcoming
   Rust integration and is obviously a silly implementation to begin with.
 
   This cleanup replaces the hrtimer_init(T); T->function = cb; sequence
   with hrtimer_setup(T, cb);
 
   The conversion was done with Coccinelle and a few manual fixups.
 
   Once the conversion has completely landed in mainline, hrtimer_init()
