slip: remove slip_hangup() to fix use-after-free in slip_receive_buf()
Jaeyoung Chung and Eulgyu Kim reported a slab-use-after-free read
in slip_receive_buf() when racing against tty hangup.
tty_ldisc_hangup() calls ld->ops->hangup() while holding only
a read lock on tty->ldisc_sem (via tty_ldisc_ref()).
Because slip_hangup() simply called slip_close(), it ran concurrently
with reader functions such as slip_receive_buf().
slip_close() unregisters and frees the net device and its private
struct slip, causing concurrent reader threads in slip_receive_buf()
to dereference freed memory.
Line discipline close() is already guaranteed to be called under
the write lock of tty->ldisc_sem during hangup processing
(in tty_ldisc_reinit() or tty_ldisc_kill()).
Remove slip_hangup() so teardown is serialized cleanly by slip_close().

slip: fix use-after-free in sl_sync()
slip_devs[] stores bare net_device pointers and takes no reference on
them. sl_sync() and sl_alloc() walk that table from slip_open() under
rtnl_lock(), while an entry is dropped by sl_free_netdev(), which
sl_setup() installs as dev->priv_destructor.
priv_destructor is called from netdev_run_todo(), which deliberately
runs with the RTNL semaphore released so that it can sleep while waiting
for the device refcount to drop:
/* Snapshot list, allow later requests */
list_replace_init(&net_todo_list, &list);
__rtnl_unlock();
...
if (dev->priv_destructor)
dev->priv_destructor(dev); /* slip_devs[i] = NULL */
if (dev->needs_free_netdev)
free_netdev(dev);
...
/* Free network device */
kobject_put(&dev->dev.kobj);
So rtnl_lock() does not serialise slip_open() against the teardown at
all. sl_sync() can load slip_devs[i] while the entry is still published
and dereference it after netdev_run_todo() has run the destructor and
released the device:
CPU0 (slip_open) CPU1 (slip_close)
unregister_netdev()
rtnl_unlock()
netdev_run_todo()
__rtnl_unlock()
rtnl_lock()
sl_sync()
dev = slip_devs[i]
priv_destructor(dev)
slip_devs[i] = NULL
kobject_put(&dev->dev.kobj)
/* dev is freed */
sl = netdev_priv(dev)
if (sl->tty || sl->leased) /* use-after-free */

net: slip: serialize receive against buffer reallocation
sl_realloc_bufs() replaces rbuff and updates buffsize while holding
sl->lock. slip_receive_buf() reads those fields and writes through rbuff
without holding the lock.
An MTU change can therefore race with receive processing. An MTU shrink
can expose the new smaller rbuff with the old larger bound, causing an
out-of-bounds write. A receive callback which already loaded the old
rbuff can instead continue writing after that buffer has been freed.
Serialize receive processing with sl_realloc_bufs() by holding sl->lock
while consuming each receive batch.

slip: bound decode() reads against the compressed packet length
slhc_uncompress() parses a VJ-compressed TCP header by advancing a
pointer through the packet via decode() and pull16(). Neither helper
bounds-checks against isize, and decode() masks its return with
& 0xffff so it can never return the -1 that callers test for -- those
error paths are dead code.
A short compressed frame whose change byte requests optional fields
lets decode() read past the end of the packet. The over-read bytes
are folded into the cached cstate and reflected into subsequent
reconstructed packets.
Make decode() and pull16() take the packet end pointer and return -1
when exhausted. Add a bounds check before the TCP-checksum read.
The existing == -1 tests now do what they were always meant to.

slip: reject VJ receive packets on instances with no rstate array
slhc_init() accepts rslots == 0 as a valid configuration, with the
documented meaning of 'no receive compression'. In that case the
allocation loop in slhc_init() is skipped, so comp->rstate stays
NULL and comp->rslot_limit stays 0 (from the kzalloc of struct
slcompress).
The receive helpers do not defend against that configuration.
slhc_uncompress() dereferences comp->rstate[x] when the VJ header
carries an explicit connection ID, and slhc_remember() later assigns
cs = &comp->rstate[...] after only comparing the packet's slot number
to comp->rslot_limit. Because rslot_limit is 0, slot 0 passes the
range check, and the code dereferences a NULL rstate.
The configuration is reachable in-tree through PPP. PPPIOCSMAXCID
stores its argument in a signed int, and (val >> 16) uses arithmetic
shift. Passing 0xffff0000 therefore sign-extends to -1, so val2 + 1
is 0 and ppp_generic.c ends up calling slhc_init(0, 1). Because
/dev/ppp open is gated by ns_capable(CAP_NET_ADMIN), the whole path
is reachable from an unprivileged user namespace. Once the malformed
VJ state is installed, any inbound VJ-compressed or VJ-uncompressed
frame that selects slot 0 crashes the kernel in softirq context:

Reject the receive side on such instances instead of touching rstate.
slhc_uncompress() falls through to its existing 'bad' label, which
bumps sls_i_error and enters the toss state. slhc_remember() mirrors
that with an explicit sls_i_error increment followed by slhc_toss();
the sls_i_runt counter is not used here because a missing rstate is
an internal configuration state, not a runt packet.
The transmit path is unaffected: the only in-tree caller that picks
rslots from userspace (ppp_generic.c) still supplies tslots >= 1, and
slip.c always calls slhc_init(16, 16), so comp->tstate remains valid
and slhc_compress() continues to work.

Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar types
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org> |

slip: make slhc_remember() more robust against malicious packets
syzbot found that slhc_remember() was missing checks against
malicious packets [1].
slhc_remember() only checked the size of the packet was at least 20,
which is not good enough.
We need to make sure the packet includes the IPv4 and TCP header
that are supposed to be carried.
Add iph and th pointers to make the code more readable.

tty: remove file from tty_mode_ioctl
The only user of 'file' parameter in tty_mode_ioctl is a BUG_ON check. Provided it never crashed for anyone, it's an overkill to pass the parameter to tty_mode_ioctl only for this check. slip/plip: use ndo_siocdevprivate
slip and plip both use a couple of SIOCDEVPRIVATE ioctl commands that overload the ifreq layout in a way that is incompatible with compat mode. Convert to use ndo_siocdevprivate to allow passing the data this way, but return an error in compat mode anyway because the private structure is still incompatible. tty: remove TTY_LDISC_MAGIC
First, it is never checked. Second, use of it as a debugging aid is at least questionable. With the current tools, I don't think anyone used this kind of thing for debugging purposes for years. can, slip: Protect tty->disc_data in write_wakeup and close with RCU
write_wakeup can happen in parallel with close/hangup where tty->disc_data is set to NULL and the netdevice is freed thus also freeing disc_data. write_wakeup accesses disc_data so we must prevent close from freeing the netdev while write_wakeup has a non-NULL view of tty->disc_data. We also need to make sure that accesses to disc_data are atomic. Which can all be done with RCU. This problem was found by Syzkaller on SLCAN, but the same issue is reproducible with the SLIP line discipline using an LTP test based on the Syzkaller reproducer. A fix which didn't use RCU was posted by Hillf Danton. Fixes: |

slip_devs device list. On next open after failure this list is iterated
and freed device is accessed. Fix this by calling sl_free_netdev in error
path.

slip: make slhc_free() silently accept an error pointer
This way, slhc_free() accepts what slhc_init() returns, whether that is
an error or not.
In particular, the pattern in sl_alloc_bufs() is
slcomp = slhc_init(16, 16);
...
slhc_free(slcomp);
for the error handling path, and rather than complicate that code, just
make it ok to always free what was returned by the init function.
That's what the code used to do before commit

change semantics of ldisc ->compat_ioctl()
First of all, make it return int. Returning long when native method had never allowed that is ridiculous and inconvenient. More importantly, change the caller; if ldisc ->compat_ioctl() is NULL or returns -ENOIOCTLCMD, tty_compat_ioctl() will try to feed cmd and compat_ptr(arg) to ldisc's native ->ioctl(). That simplifies ->compat_ioctl() instances quite a bit - they only need to deal with ioctls that are neither generic tty ones (those would get shunted off to tty_ioctl()) nor simple compat pointer ones. Note that something like TCFLSH won't reach ->compat_ioctl(), even if ldisc ->ioctl() does handle it - it will be recognized earlier and passed to tty_ioctl() (and ultimately - ldisc ->ioctl()). For many ldiscs it means that NULL ->compat_ioctl() does the right thing. Those where it won't serve (see e.g. n_r3964.c) are also easily dealt with - we need to handle the numeric-argument ioctls (calling the native instance) and, if such would exist, the ioctls that need layout conversion, etc. All in-tree ldiscs dealt with. treewide: kzalloc() -> kcalloc()
The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). This
patch replaces cases of:
kzalloc(a * b, gfp)
with:
kcalloc(a * b, gfp)
as well as handling cases of:
kzalloc(a * b * c, gfp)
with:
kzalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp)
as it's slightly less ugly than:
kzalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp)
This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like:
kzalloc(4 * 1024, gfp)
though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion.
Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were
dropped, since they're redundant.
The Coccinelle script used for this was:
// Fix redundant parens around sizeof().

slip: Check if rstate is initialized before uncompressing
On receiving a packet the state index points to the rstate which must be used to fill up IP and TCP headers. But if the state index points to a rstate which is unitialized, i.e. filled with zeros, it gets stuck in an infinite loop inside ip_fast_csum trying to compute the ip checsum of a header with zero length. 89.666953: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e94d38>] slhc_uncompress+0x464/0x468 89.666965: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e87d88>] ppp_receive_nonmp_frame+0x3b4/0x65c 89.666978: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e89dd4>] ppp_receive_frame+0x64/0x7e0 89.666991: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e8a708>] ppp_input+0x104/0x198 89.667005: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e93868>] pppopns_recv_core+0x238/0x370 89.667027: <2> [<ffffff9dd4428fc8>] __sk_receive_skb+0xdc/0x250 89.667040: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e939e4>] pppopns_recv+0x44/0x60 89.667053: <2> [<ffffff9dd4426848>] __sock_queue_rcv_skb+0x16c/0x24c 89.667065: <2> [<ffffff9dd4426954>] sock_queue_rcv_skb+0x2c/0x38 89.667085: <2> [<ffffff9dd44f7358>] raw_rcv+0x124/0x154 89.667098: <2> [<ffffff9dd44f7568>] raw_local_deliver+0x1e0/0x22c 89.667117: <2> [<ffffff9dd44c8ba0>] ip_local_deliver_finish+0x70/0x24c 89.667131: <2> [<ffffff9dd44c92f4>] ip_local_deliver+0x100/0x10c ./scripts/faddr2line vmlinux slhc_uncompress+0x464/0x468 output: ip_fast_csum at arch/arm64/include/asm/checksum.h:40 (inlined by) slhc_uncompress at drivers/net/slip/slhc.c:615 Adding a variable to indicate if the current rstate is initialized. treewide: setup_timer() -> timer_setup()
This converts all remaining cases of the old setup_timer() API into using
timer_setup(), where the callback argument is the structure already
holding the struct timer_list. These should have no behavioral changes,
since they just change which pointer is passed into the callback with
the same available pointers after conversion. It handles the following
examples, in addition to some other variations.
Casting from unsigned long:
void my_callback(unsigned long data)
{
struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data;
...
}
...
setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, ptr);
and forced object casts:
void my_callback(struct something *ptr)
{
...
}
...
setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, (unsigned long)ptr);
become:
void my_callback(struct timer_list *t)
{
struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer);
...
}
...
timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0);
Direct function assignments:
void my_callback(unsigned long data)
{
struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data;
...
}
...
ptr->my_timer.function = my_callback;
have a temporary cast added, along with converting the args:
void my_callback(struct timer_list *t)
{
struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer);
...
}
...
ptr->my_timer.function = (TIMER_FUNC_TYPE)my_callback;
And finally, callbacks without a data assignment:
void my_callback(unsigned long data)
{
...
}
...
setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0);
have their argument renamed to verify they're unused during conversion:
void my_callback(struct timer_list *unused)
{
...
}
...
timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0);
The conversion is done with the following Coccinelle script:
spatch --very-quiet --all-includes --include-headers \
-I ./arch/x86/include -I ./arch/x86/include/generated \
-I ./include -I ./arch/x86/include/uapi \
