388b607d10 EFI updates for v7.3
- Set a timeout for EFI runtime service completions, and declare the
firmware wedged if it is exceeded. Note that this requires special
handling in case the firmware does return after all.

 - Rate limit the efivarfs statfs() handler as the QueryVariableInfo()
   runtime service can be costly

 - Sanity check the size of struct properties_header on Mac/x86

 - Tweak the prototype of efi_guid_to_str()

ecbccdbdab efi/runtime-wrappers: factor out efi_rts_park_worker()
x86's efi_crash_gracefully_on_page_fault() ends in an infinite
schedule() loop so the kworker that faulted in firmware never runs
efi_rts_wq again. A later change needs the same "park this worker
forever" primitive on the runtime service timeout path, so factor the
loop into a shared efi_rts_park_worker() and call it from the x86
page-fault handler.

No functional change.

6b5edc71aa x86/olpc: select GPIOLIB_LEGACY

by at least two drivers:

arch/x86/platform/olpc/olpc-xo1-sci.c:358:13: error: implicit declaration of function 'gpio_request' [-Wimplicit-function-declaration]

The AMD Geode platform that this is based on is now marked as
'Orphaned' in Kconfig, and it is likely that there are no XO1
users on modern kernels, but so far there is no consensus on
removing it entirely.

Select CONFIG_GPIOLIB_LEGACY for this platform and make sure the
sound driver portion cannot be compiled without this.

x86/platform/olpc: xo15: Stop setting acpi_device_name/class()
The driver sets acpi_device_name() and acpi_device_class() which are
never read afterward, so make it stop doing that and drop the symbols
defined specifically for this purpose.

No intentional functional impact.

This will facilitate the removal of device_name and device_class from

442d60df74 x86/platform/geode: reference the real node of the cs5535 GPIO controller
GPIO software node lookup should rely exclusively on matching the
addresses of the referenced firmware nodes. Commit e5d527be7e ("gpio:
swnode: don't use the swnode's name as the key for GPIO lookup") tried to
enforce this but had to be reverted: it broke existing users who abuse the
software node mechanism by creating "dummy" software nodes named after the
device they want to get GPIOs from, without ever attaching them to the
actual GPIO devices. Those users rely on GPIOLIB matching the label of the
GPIO controller against the name of the software node rather than on a real
firmware node link.

Un-reverting e5d527be7e therefore requires converting all such users to
real firmware node lookup. The geode board setup is one of them: it
references the cs5535 GPIO controller through a locally-defined dummy node
named "cs5535-gpio".

The cs5535 MFD driver now exports the software node associated with its
GPIO controller cell as cs5535_gpio_swnode. Use it as the target of the
GPIO software node references in geode-common.c instead of the dummy node,
so the lookup resolves by firmware node address. As the referenced node
must exist at lookup time, make the cs5535 driver built-in for all boards
selecting GEODE_COMMON (depend on GPIO_CS5535=y). The node is exported in
the "CS5535" namespace, so import it in this module.

x86/platform/olpc: xo15: Convert ACPI driver to a platform one
In all cases in which a struct acpi_driver is used for binding a driver
to an ACPI device object, a corresponding platform device is created by
the ACPI core and that device is regarded as a proper representation of
underlying hardware. Accordingly, a struct platform_driver should be
used by driver code to bind to that device. There are multiple reasons
why drivers should not bind directly to ACPI device objects [1].

Overall, it is better to bind drivers to platform devices than to their
ACPI companions, so convert the olpc-xo15-sci ACPI driver to a platform
one.

After this change, the wakeup source added by the driver will appear
under the platform device used for driver binding, but the sysfs
attribute added by the driver under the ACPI companion of that device
will stay there in case there are utilities in user space expecting it
to be there.

While this is not expected to alter functionality, it changes sysfs
layout and so it will be visible to user space.

Ard Biesheuvel
2c340aab54 x86/efi: Restore IRQ state in EFI page fault handler
The kernel's softirq API does not permit re-enabling softirqs while IRQs
are disabled. The reason for this is that local_bh_enable() will not
only re-enable delivery of softirqs over the back of IRQs, it will also
handle any pending softirqs immediately, regardless of whether IRQs are
enabled at that point.

For this reason, commit

d021985504 ("x86/fpu: Improve crypto performance by making kernel-mode FPU reliably usable in softirqs")

disables softirqs only when IRQs are enabled, as it is not permitted
otherwise, but also unnecessary, given that asynchronous softirq
delivery never happens to begin with while IRQs are disabled.

However, this does mean that entering a kernel mode FPU section with
IRQs enabled and leaving it with IRQs disabled leads to problems, as
identified by Sashiko [0]: the EFI page fault handler is called from
page_fault_oops() with IRQs disabled, and thus ends the kernel mode FPU
section with IRQs disabled as well, regardless of whether IRQs were
enabled when it was started. This may result in schedule() being called
with a non-zero preempt_count, causing a BUG().

So take care to re-enable IRQs when handling any EFI page faults if they
were taken with IRQs enabled.

088f65e206 x86/efi: Fix graceful fault handling after FPU softirq changes
Since commit d021985504 ("x86/fpu: Improve crypto performance by
making kernel-mode FPU reliably usable in softirqs"), kernel_fpu_begin()
calls fpregs_lock() which uses local_bh_disable() instead of the
previous preempt_disable(). This sets SOFTIRQ_OFFSET in preempt_count
during the entire EFI runtime service call, causing in_interrupt() to
return true in normal task context.

The graceful page fault handler efi_crash_gracefully_on_page_fault()
uses in_interrupt() to bail out for faults in real interrupt context.
With SOFTIRQ_OFFSET now set, the handler always bails out, leaving EFI
firmware page faults unhandled. This escalates to die() which also sees
in_interrupt() as true and calls panic("Fatal exception in interrupt"),
resulting in a hard system freeze. On systems with buggy firmware that
triggers page faults during EFI runtime calls (e.g., accessing unmapped
memory in GetTime()), this causes an unrecoverable hang instead of the
expected graceful EFI_ABORTED recovery.

Fix by replacing in_interrupt() with !in_task(). This preserves the
original intent of bailing for interrupts or NMI faults, while no longer
falsely triggering from the FPU code path's local_bh_disable().

Fixes: d021985504 ("x86/fpu: Improve crypto performance by making kernel-mode FPU reliably usable in softirqs")

[ardb: Sashiko spotted that using 'in_hardirq() || in_nmi()' leaves a
window where a softirq may be taken before fpregs_lock() is
called, but after efi_rts_work.efi_rts_id has been assigned,
and any page faults occurring in that window will then be
misidentified as having been caused by the firmware. Instead,
       use !in_task(), which incorporates in_serving_softirq(). ]

b981e9e94c x86/platform/geode: Fix on-stack property data use-after-return bug
The PROPERTY_ENTRY_GPIO macro (and by extension PROPERTY_ENTRY_REF)
creates a temporary software_node_ref_args structure on the stack
when used in a runtime assignment. This results in the property
pointing to data that is invalid once the function returns.

Fix this by ensuring the GPIO reference data is not stored on stack and
using PROPERTY_ENTRY_REF_ARRAY_LEN() to point directly to the persistent

0021e71cfb x86/efi: Disable LASS while executing runtime services
Ideally, EFI runtime services should switch to kernel virtual addresses
after SetVirtualAddressMap(). However, firmware implementations are
known to be buggy in this regard and continue to access physical
addresses. The kernel maintains a 1:1 mapping of all runtime services
code and data regions to avoid breaking such firmware.

LASS enforcement relies on bit 63 of the virtual address, which would
block such accesses to the lower half. Unfortunately, not doing anything
could lead to #GP faults when users update to a kernel with LASS
enabled.

One option is to use a STAC/CLAC pair to temporarily disable LASS data
enforcement. However, there is no guarantee that the stray accesses
would only touch data and not perform instruction fetches. Also, relying
on the AC bit would depend on the runtime calls preserving RFLAGS, which
is highly unlikely in practice.

Instead, use the big hammer and switch off the entire LASS mechanism
temporarily by clearing CR4.LASS. Runtime services are called in the
context of efi_mm, which has explicitly unmapped any memory EFI isn't
allowed to touch (including userspace). So, do this right after
switching to efi_mm to avoid any security impact.

Some runtime services can be invoked during boot when LASS isn't active.
Use a global variable (similar to efi_mm) to save and restore the
correct CR4.LASS state. The runtime calls are serialized with the
efi_runtime_lock, so no concurrency issues are expected.

After commit e6e094e053 ("x86/acpi, x86/boot: Take RSDP address from

a4b0bf6a40 x86/efi: defer freeing of boot services memory
efi_free_boot_services() frees memory occupied by EFI_BOOT_SERVICES_CODE
and EFI_BOOT_SERVICES_DATA using memblock_free_late().

There are two issue with that: memblock_free_late() should be used for
memory allocated with memblock_alloc() while the memory reserved with
memblock_reserve() should be freed with free_reserved_area().

More acutely, with CONFIG_DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT=y
efi_free_boot_services() is called before deferred initialization of the
memory map is complete.

Benjamin Herrenschmidt reports that this causes a leak of ~140MB of
RAM on EC2 t3a.nano instances which only have 512MB or RAM.

If the freed memory resides in the areas that memory map for them is
still uninitialized, they won't be actually freed because
memblock_free_late() calls memblock_free_pages() and the latter skips
uninitialized pages.

Using free_reserved_area() at this point is also problematic because
__free_page() accesses the buddy of the freed page and that again might
end up in uninitialized part of the memory map.

Delaying the entire efi_free_boot_services() could be problematic
because in addition to freeing boot services memory it updates
efi.memmap without any synchronization and that's undesirable late in
boot when there is concurrency.

More robust approach is to only defer freeing of the EFI boot services
memory.

Split efi_free_boot_services() in two. First efi_unmap_boot_services()
collects ranges that should be freed into an array then
efi_free_boot_services() later frees them after deferred init is complete.

bf4afc53b7 Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argument
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using

    git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
        xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'

to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.

Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.

For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:

Single allocations:	kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)

Array allocations:	kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)

Flex array allocations:	kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with:	kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)

(where TYPE may also be *VAR)

The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

E820 type of the range removed:

	extern void e820__range_remove(u64 start, u64 size, enum e820_type old_type, bool check_type);

Since E820 types start at 1, zero has a natural meaning of 'no type.

Consolidate the (old_type,check_type) parameters into a single (filter_type)
parameter:

	extern void e820__range_remove(u64 start, u64 size, enum e820_type filter_type);

Note that both e820__mapped_raw_any() and e820__mapped_any()
already have such semantics for their 'type' parameter, although
it's currently not used with '0' by in-kernel code.

Also, the __e820__mapped_all() internal helper already has such
semantics implemented as well, and the e820__get_entry_type() API
uses the '0' type to such effect.

This simplifies not just e820__range_remove(), and synchronizes its
use of type filters with other E820 API functions, but simplifies
usage sites as well, such as parse_memmap_one(), beyond the reduction
of the number of parameters:

  - else if (from)
  -                       e820__range_remove(start_at, mem_size, from, 1);
                  else
  -                       e820__range_remove(start_at, mem_size, 0, 0);
  +                       e820__range_remove(start_at, mem_size, from);

The generated code gets smaller as well:

	add/remove: 0/0 grow/shrink: 0/5 up/down: 0/-66 (-66)

	Function old new delta
	parse_memopt 112 107 -5
	efi_init 1048 1039 -9
	setup_arch 2719 2709 -10
	e820__range_remove 283 273 -10
	parse_memmap_opt 559 527 -32

	Total: Before=22,675,600, After=22,675,534, chg -0.00%

   falls to zero.

 - The 3 patch series "kho: fixes and cleanups" from Mike Rapoport adds a
few touchups to the recently added Kexec Handover feature.

 - The 10 patch series "mm: make mm->flags a bitmap and 64-bit on all
arches" from Lorenzo Stoakes turns mm_struct.flags into a bitmap. To
end the constant struggle with space shortage on 32-bit conflicting with
   64-bit's needs.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/swapfile.c and swap.h cleanup" from Chris Li
   cleans up some swap code.

THPs when advised" from David Hildenbrand "allows individual processes
to opt-out of THP=always into THP=madvise, without affecting other
   workloads on the system".

It's a long story - the [1/N] changelog spells out the considerations.

 - The 11 patch series "Add and use memdesc_flags_t" from Matthew Wilcox
gets us started on the memdesc project. Please see
   https://kernelnewbies.org/MatthewWilcox/Memdescs and
   https://blogs.oracle.com/linux/post/introducing-memdesc.

 - The 3 patch series "Tiny optimization for large read operations" from

   fixes some UFFD selftests issues.

 - The 3 patch series "introduce kernel file mapped folios" from Boris
Burkov introduces the concept of "kernel file pages". Using these
permits btrfs to account its metadata pages to the root cgroup, rather
than to the cgroups of random inappropriate tasks.

 - The 2 patch series "mm/pageblock: improve readability of some
pageblock handling" from Wei Yang provides some readability improvements
   to the page allocator code.

arch-specific implementations" from Sabyrzhan Tasbolatov moves KASAN
   arch-specific initialization code into a common arch-neutral
   implementation.

zspool - an indirection layer which now only redirects to a single thing
   (zsmalloc).

 - The 2 patch series "mm: task_stack: Stack handling cleanups" from
Pasha Tatashin makes a couple of cleanups in the fork code.

 - The 37 patch series "mm: remove nth_page()" from David Hildenbrand
makes rather a lot of adjustments at various nth_page() callsites,
eventually permitting the removal of that undesirable helper function.

 - The 2 patch series "introduce kasan.write_only option in hw-tags" from
Yeoreum Yun creates a KASAN read-only mode for ARM, using that
architecture's memory tagging feature. It is felt that a read-only mode
KASAN is suitable for use in production systems rather than debug-only.

from Kefeng Wang does some tidying in the hugetlb folio allocation code.

 - The 12 patch series "mm: establish const-correctness for pointer
parameters" from Max Kellermann makes quite a number of the MM API
functions more accurate about the constness of their arguments. This

(phase I)" from Chris Li and Kairui Song is the first step along the
path to implementing "swap tables" - a new approach to swap allocation
and state tracking which is expected to yield speed and space
improvements. This patchset itself yields a 5-20% performance benefit
   in some situations.

 - The 3 patch series "Some ptdesc cleanups" from Matthew Wilcox utilizes
the new memdesc layer to clean up the ptdesc code a little.

b45ef93701 x86: stop calling page_address() in free_pages()
free_pages() should be used when we only have a virtual address. We
should call __free_pages() directly on our page instead.

c5c30a3736 x86/boot: Move startup code out of __head section
Move startup code out of the __head section, now that this no longer has
a special significance. Move everything into .text or .init.text as
appropriate, so that startup code is not kept around unnecessarily.

894af4a1cd objtool: Validate kCFI calls
Validate that all indirect calls adhere to kCFI rules. Notably doing
nocfi indirect call to a cfi function is broken.

Apparently some Rust 'core' code violates this and explodes when ran
with FineIBT.

All the ANNOTATE_NOCFI_SYM sites are prime targets for attackers.

 - runtime EFI is especially henous because it also needs to disable
IBT. Basically calling unknown code without CFI protection at
runtime is a massice security issue.

 - Kexec image handover; if you can exploit this, you get to keep it :-)

acc902de05 serial: 8250: Move CE4100 quirks to a module under 8250 driver

a7549636f6 x86/sev: Let sev_es_efi_map_ghcbs() map the CA pages too
OVMF EFI firmware needs access to the CA page to do SVSM protocol calls. For
example, when the SVSM implements an EFI variable store, such calls will be
necessary.

So add that to sev_es_efi_map_ghcbs() and also rename the function to reflect
the additional job it is doing now.
