LoongArch: Expand module virtual address space to 2GB
The current 256MB module virtual address space is easily exhausted when loading massive graphics drivers such as amdgpu along with the large unstripped symbol tables, resulting in allocation failures of "execmem: unable to allocate memory". Thus, expand the module virtual address space to 2GB while keeping the current normal code model '-mcmodel=normal', rather than using the medium code model '-mcmodel=medium'. This approach avoids the extra performance overhead and larger binary size of forcing every function call into a 2-instruction sequence of 'pcaddu18i + jirl'. Given that individual module code segments rarely exceed 128MB, most jumps remain fast direct calls by using the bl instruction. For the long-distance jumps exceeding the +/-128MB limit, apply_r_larch_b26() emits PLT entries, while signed_imm_check() guarantees the run-time safety by rejecting any out-of-bound instruction offsets. There is still a risk that the distance between .init.text and .text of the same module exceeds 128MB. So we divide the 2GB virtual space to be two sub-regions: the first 256MB is for module text, and the rest is for module data. LoongArch: remove unreachable invalid range check in kasan_init()
kasan_init() populates the linear mapping shadow with for_each_mem_range() and breaks the loop when start >= end. for_each_mem_range() never returns an invalid range, so start < end always. Therefore the start >= end check is unreachable, so remove it. No functional change. mm/sparse-vmemmap: pass @pgmap argument to memory deactivation paths
Currently, the memory hot-remove call chain -- arch_remove_memory(), __remove_pages(), sparse_remove_section() and section_deactivate() -- does not carry the struct dev_pagemap pointer. This prevents the lower levels from knowing whether the section was originally populated with vmemmap optimizations (e.g., DAX with vmemmap optimization enabled). Without this information, we cannot call vmemmap_can_optimize() to determine if the vmemmap pages were optimized. As a result, the vmemmap page accounting during teardown will mistakenly assume a non-optimized allocation, leading to incorrect memmap statistics. To lay the groundwork for fixing the vmemmap page accounting, we need to pass the @pgmap pointer down to the deactivation location. Plumb the @pgmap argument through the APIs of arch_remove_memory(), __remove_pages() and sparse_remove_section(), mirroring the corresponding *_activate() paths. LoongArch: Add HIGHMEM (PKMAP and FIX_KMAP) support
Add HIGHMEM (High Memory) support for LoongArch, mostly needed by 32BIT kernel because the size of kernel virtual memory space is only 512MB and the size of usable physical memory is only 256MB in this case. HIGHMEM adds permanent kernel mapping (PKMAP) and fixed kernel mapping (FIX_KMAP), which increase usable physical memory up to 2.25GB (2304MB). We can just use the generic copy_user_highpage(), so remove the custom version. Signed-off-by: Huacai Chen <chenhuacai@loongson.cn> |

arch, mm: consolidate empty_zero_page
Reduce 22 declarations of empty_zero_page to 3 and 23 declarations of ZERO_PAGE() to 4. Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page). Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement colored zero page (MIPS and s390). ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static inline causes severe pain in header dependencies. For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy: * alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only * arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact. * m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock, although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS will work fine. * sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE() but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to empty_zero_page. * sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot. Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic empty_zero_page. * hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page /* A handy thing to have if one has the RAM. Declared in head.S */ that unfortunately had to go :) Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20260211103141.3215197-4-rppt@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport (Microsoft) <rppt@kernel.org> Acked-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> [parisc] Tested-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> [parisc] Reviewed-by: Christophe Leroy (CS GROUP) <chleroy@kernel.org> Acked-by: Dave Hansen <dave.hansen@linux.intel.com> Acked-by: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Acked-by: Magnus Lindholm <linmag7@gmail.com> [alpha] Acked-by: Dinh Nguyen <dinguyen@kernel.org> [nios2] Acked-by: Andreas Larsson <andreas@gaisler.com> [sparc] Acked-by: David Hildenbrand (Arm) <david@kernel.org> Acked-by: Liam R. Otherwise bringing up the primary CPU failed when CONFIG_KASAN is set
on PTW-enabled systems, here are the call chains:
kernel_entry()
start_kernel()
setup_arch()
kasan_init()
kasan_init_generic()
The reason is PTW-enabled systems have speculative accesses which means
memory accesses to the shadow memory after kasan_init() may be executed
by hardware before. However, accessing shadow memory is safe only after
kasan fully initialized because kasan_init() uses a temporary PGD table
until we have populated all levels of shadow page tables and writen the
PGD register. Moving kasan_init_generic() later can defer the occasion
of kasan_enabled(), so as to avoid speculative accesses on shadow pages.
After moving kasan_init_generic() to the end, kasan_init() can no longer
call kasan_mem_to_shadow() for shadow address conversion because it will
always return kasan_early_shadow_page. On the other hand, we should keep
the current logic of kasan_mem_to_shadow() for both the early and final
stage because there may be instrumentation before kasan_init().
To solve this, we factor out a new mem_to_shadow() function from current
kasan_mem_to_shadow() for the shadow address conversion in kasan_init().

LoongArch: Disable instrumentation for setup_ptwalker()
According to Documentation/dev-tools/kasan.rst, software KASAN modes use
compiler instrumentation to insert validity checks. Such instrumentation
might be incompatible with some parts of the kernel, and therefore needs
to be disabled, just use the attribute __no_sanitize_address to disable
instrumentation for the low level function setup_ptwalker().
Otherwise bringing up the secondary CPUs failed when CONFIG_KASAN is set
(especially when PTW is enabled), here are the call chains:
smpboot_entry()
start_secondary()
cpu_probe()
per_cpu_trap_init()
tlb_init()
setup_tlb_handler()
setup_ptwalker()
The reason is the PGD registers are configured in setup_ptwalker(), but
KASAN instrumentation may cause TLB exceptions before that.

arch, mm: consolidate initialization of nodes, zones and memory map
To initialize node, zone and memory map data structures every architecture calls free_area_init() during setup_arch() and passes it an array of zone limits. Beside code duplication it creates "interesting" ordering cases between allocation and initialization of hugetlb and the memory map. Some architectures allocate hugetlb pages very early in setup_arch() in certain cases, some only create hugetlb CMA areas in setup_arch() and sometimes hugetlb allocations happen mm_core_init(). With arch_zone_limits_init() helper available now on all architectures it is no longer necessary to call free_area_init() from architecture setup code. Rather core MM initialization can call arch_zone_limits_init() in a single place. This allows to unify ordering of hugetlb vs memory map allocation and initialization. Remove the call to free_area_init() from architecture specific code and place it in a new mm_core_init_early() function that is called immediately after setup_arch(). After this refactoring it is possible to consolidate hugetlb allocations and eliminate differences in ordering of hugetlb and memory map initialization among different architectures. As the first step of this consolidation move hugetlb_bootmem_alloc() to mm_core_early_init(). To avoid #ifdefs here and there, they need adaptive accessors, so we define and use: csr_read()/csr_write()/csr_xchg(); IOCSR doesn't have a "natural length", which means a 64bit register can be treated as two 32bit registers, so we just use two 32bit accessors to emulate a 64bit accessors. LoongArch: Consolidate max_pfn & max_low_pfn calculation
Now there 5 places which calculate max_pfn & max_low_pfn: 1. in fdt_setup() for FDT systems; 2. in memblock_init() for ACPI systems; 3. in init_numa_memory() for NUMA systems; 4. in arch_mem_init() to recalculate for "mem=" cmdline; 5. in paging_init() to recalculate for NUMA systems. Since memblock_init() is called both for ACPI and FDT systems, move the calculation out of the for_each_efi_memory_desc() loop can eliminate the first case. The last case is very questionable (may be derived from the MIPS/Loongson code) and breaks the "mem=" cmdline, so should be removed. And then the NUMA version of paging_init() can be also eliminated. After consolidation there are 3 places of calculation: 1. in memblock_init() for both ACPI and FDT systems; 2. in init_numa_memory() to recalculate for NUMA systems; 3. in arch_mem_init() to recalculate for the "mem=" cmdline. kasan: introduce ARCH_DEFER_KASAN and unify static key across modes
Patch series "kasan: unify kasan_enabled() and remove arch-specific
implementations", v6.
This patch series addresses the fragmentation in KASAN initialization
across architectures by introducing a unified approach that eliminates
duplicate static keys and arch-specific kasan_arch_is_ready()
implementations.
The core issue is that different architectures have inconsistent approaches
to KASAN readiness tracking:
- PowerPC, LoongArch, and UML arch, each implement own kasan_arch_is_ready()
- Only HW_TAGS mode had a unified static key (kasan_flag_enabled)
- Generic and SW_TAGS modes relied on arch-specific solutions
or always-on behavior
This patch (of 2):
Introduce CONFIG_ARCH_DEFER_KASAN to identify architectures [1] that need
to defer KASAN initialization until shadow memory is properly set up, and
unify the static key infrastructure across all KASAN modes.
[1] PowerPC, UML, LoongArch selects ARCH_DEFER_KASAN.
The core issue is that different architectures haveinconsistent approaches
to KASAN readiness tracking:
- PowerPC, LoongArch, and UML arch, each implement own
kasan_arch_is_ready()
- Only HW_TAGS mode had a unified static key (kasan_flag_enabled)
- Generic and SW_TAGS modes relied on arch-specific solutions or always-on
behavior
This patch addresses the fragmentation in KASAN initialization across
architectures by introducing a unified approach that eliminates duplicate
static keys and arch-specific kasan_arch_is_ready() implementations.
Let's replace kasan_arch_is_ready() with existing kasan_enabled() check,
which examines the static key being enabled if arch selects
ARCH_DEFER_KASAN or has HW_TAGS mode support. For other arch,
kasan_enabled() checks the enablement during compile time.
Now KASAN users can use a single kasan_enabled() check everywhere.

mm/pagewalk: split walk_page_range_novma() into kernel/user parts
walk_page_range_novma() is rather confusing - it supports two modes, one used often, the other used only for debugging. The first mode is the common case of traversal of kernel page tables, which is what nearly all callers use this for. Secondly it provides an unusual debugging interface that allows for the traversal of page tables in a userland range of memory even for that memory which is not described by a VMA. It is far from certain that such page tables should even exist, but perhaps this is precisely why it is useful as a debugging mechanism. As a result, this is utilised by ptdump only. Historically, things were reversed - ptdump was the only user, and other parts of the kernel evolved to use the kernel page table walking here. Since we have some complicated and confusing locking rules for the novma case, it makes sense to separate the two usages into their own functions. Doing this also provide self-documentation as to the intent of the caller - are they doing something rather unusual or are they simply doing a standard kernel page table walk? We therefore establish two separate functions - walk_page_range_debug() for this single usage, and walk_kernel_page_table_range() for general kernel page table walking. The walk_page_range_debug() function is currently used to traverse both userland and kernel mappings, so we maintain this and in the case of kernel mappings being traversed, we have walk_page_range_debug() invoke walk_kernel_page_table_range() internally. We additionally make walk_page_range_debug() internal to mm. LoongArch: Handle KCOV __init vs inline mismatches
When the KCOV is enabled all functions get instrumented, unless the __no_sanitize_coverage attribute is used. To prepare for __no_sanitize_coverage being applied to __init functions, we have to handle differences in how GCC's inline optimizations get resolved. LoongArch: Return NULL from huge_pte_offset() for invalid PMD
LoongArch's huge_pte_offset() currently returns a pointer to a PMD slot even if the underlying entry points to invalid_pte_table (indicating no mapping). Callers like smaps_hugetlb_range() fetch this invalid entry value (the address of invalid_pte_table) via this pointer. The generic is_swap_pte() check then incorrectly identifies this address as a swap entry on LoongArch, because it satisfies the "!pte_present() && !pte_none()" conditions. This misinterpretation, combined with a coincidental match by is_migration_entry() on the address bits, leads to kernel crashes in pfn_swap_entry_to_page(). Fix this at the architecture level by modifying huge_pte_offset() to check the PMD entry's content using pmd_none() before returning. If the entry is invalid (i.e., it points to invalid_pte_table), return NULL instead of the pointer to the slot. arch, mm: make releasing of memory to page allocator more explicit
The point where the memory is released from memblock to the buddy allocator is hidden inside arch-specific mem_init()s and the call to memblock_free_all() is needlessly duplicated in every artiste cure and after introduction of arch_mm_preinit() hook, mem_init() implementation on many architecture only contains the call to memblock_free_all(). Pull memblock_free_all() call into mm_core_init() and drop mem_init() on relevant architectures to make it more explicit where the free memory is released from memblock to the buddy allocator and to reduce code duplication in architecture specific code. arch, mm: set high_memory in free_area_init()
high_memory defines upper bound on the directly mapped memory. This bound is defined by the beginning of ZONE_HIGHMEM when a system has high memory and by the end of memory otherwise. All this is known to generic memory management initialization code that can set high_memory while initializing core mm structures. Add a generic calculation of high_memory to free_area_init() and remove per-architecture calculation except for the architectures that set and use high_memory earlier than that. arch, mm: set max_mapnr when allocating memory map for FLATMEM
max_mapnr is essentially the size of the memory map for systems that use FLATMEM. There is no reason to calculate it in each and every architecture when it's anyway calculated in alloc_node_mem_map(). Drop setting of max_mapnr from architecture code and set it once in alloc_node_mem_map(). While on it, move definition of mem_map and max_mapnr to mm/mm_init.c so there won't be two copies for MMU and !MMU variants. LoongArch: Fix kernel_page_present() for KPRANGE/XKPRANGE
Now kernel_page_present() always return true for KPRANGE/XKPRANGE addresses, this isn't correct because hibernation (ACPI S4) use it to distinguish whether a page is saveable. If all KPRANGE/XKPRANGE addresses are considered as saveable, then reserved memory such as EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES_CODE / EFI_RUNTIME_SERVICES_DATA will also be saved and restored. Fix this by returning true only if the KPRANGE/XKPRANGE address is in memblock.memory. Signed-off-by: Huacai Chen <chenhuacai@loongson.cn> |

mm/memblock: add memblock_alloc_or_panic interface
Before SLUB initialization, various subsystems used memblock_alloc to allocate memory. In most cases, when memory allocation fails, an immediate panic is required. To simplify this behavior and reduce repetitive checks, introduce `memblock_alloc_or_panic`. This function ensures that memory allocation failures result in a panic automatically, improving code readability and consistency across subsystems that require this behavior. [guoweikang.kernel@gmail.com: arch/s390: save_area_alloc default failure behavior changed to panic] Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20250109033136.2845676-1-guoweikang.kernel@gmail.com Link: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/Z2fknmnNtiZbCc7x@kernel.org/ Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20250102072528.650926-1-guoweikang.kernel@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Guo Weikang <guoweikang.kernel@gmail.com> Acked-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> [m68k] Reviewed-by: Alexander Gordeev <agordeev@linux.ibm.com> [s390] Acked-by: Mike Rapoport (Microsoft) <rppt@kernel.org> Cc: Alexander Gordeev <agordeev@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> |

asm-generic: pgalloc: provide generic __pgd_{alloc,free}
We already have a generic implementation of alloc/free up to P4D level, as
well as pgd_free(). Let's finish the work and add a generic PGD-level
alloc helper as well.
Unlike at lower levels, almost all architectures need some specific magic
at PGD level (typically initialising PGD entries), so introducing a
generic pgd_alloc() isn't worth it. Instead we introduce two new helpers,
__pgd_alloc() and __pgd_free(), and make use of them in the arch-specific
pgd_alloc() and pgd_free() wherever possible. To accommodate as many arch
as possible, __pgd_alloc() takes a page allocation order.
Because pagetable_alloc() allocates zeroed pages, explicit zeroing in
pgd_alloc() becomes redundant and we can get rid of it. Some trivial
implementations of pgd_free() also become unnecessary once __pgd_alloc()
is used; remove them.
Another small improvement is consistent accounting of PGD pages by using
GFP_PGTABLE_{USER,KERNEL} as appropriate.
Not all PGD allocations can be handled by the generic helpers. In
particular, multiple architectures allocate PGDs from a kmem_cache, and
those PGDs may not be page-sized.

LoongArch: Add WriteCombine shadow mapping in KASAN
Currently, the kernel couldn't boot when ARCH_IOREMAP, ARCH_WRITECOMBINE
and KASAN are enabled together. Because DMW2 is used by kernel now which
is configured as 0xa000000000000000 for WriteCombine, but KASAN has no
segment mapping for it. This patch fix this issue.
Solution: Add the relevant definitions for WriteCombine (DMW2) in KASAN.

LoongArch: Disable KASAN if PGDIR_SIZE is too large for cpu_vabits
If PGDIR_SIZE is too large for cpu_vabits, KASAN_SHADOW_END will overflow UINTPTR_MAX because KASAN_SHADOW_START/KASAN_SHADOW_END are aligned up by PGDIR_SIZE. And then the overflowed KASAN_SHADOW_END looks like a user space address. For example, PGDIR_SIZE of CONFIG_4KB_4LEVEL is 2^39, which is too large for Loongson-2K series whose cpu_vabits = 39. Since CONFIG_4KB_4LEVEL is completely legal for CPUs with cpu_vabits <= 39, we just disable KASAN via early return in kasan_init(). Otherwise we get a boot failure. Moreover, we change KASAN_SHADOW_END from the first address after KASAN shadow area to the last address in KASAN shadow area, in order to avoid the end address exactly overflow to 0 (which is a legal case). We don't need to worry about alignment because pgd_addr_end() can handle it. LoongArch: Set initial pte entry with PAGE_GLOBAL for kernel space
There are two pages in one TLB entry on LoongArch system. For kernel space, it requires both two pte entries (buddies) with PAGE_GLOBAL bit set, otherwise HW treats it as non-global tlb, there will be potential problems if tlb entry for kernel space is not global. Such as fail to flush kernel tlb with the function local_flush_tlb_kernel_range() which supposed only flush tlb with global bit. Kernel address space areas include percpu, vmalloc, vmemmap, fixmap and kasan areas. For these areas both two consecutive page table entries should be enabled with PAGE_GLOBAL bit. So with function set_pte() and pte_clear(), pte buddy entry is checked and set besides its own pte entry. However it is not atomic operation to set both two pte entries, there is problem with test_vmalloc test case. So function kernel_pte_init() is added to init a pte table when it is created for kernel address space, and the default initial pte value is PAGE_GLOBAL rather than zero at beginning. Then only its own pte entry need update with function set_pte() and pte_clear(), nothing to do with the pte buddy entry.
