Uros Bizjak uses x86 named address space qualifiers to provide compile-time checking of percpu area accesses. This has caused a small amount of fallout - two or three issues were reported. In all cases the calling code was founf to be incorrect. - The 4 patch series "Some cleanup for memcg" from Chen Ridong implements some relatively monir cleanups for the memcontrol code. - The 17 patch series "mm: fixes for device-exclusive entries (hmm)" from David Hildenbrand fixes a boatload of issues which David found then using device-exclusive PTE entries when THP is enabled. mm: stop maintaining the per-page mapcount of large folios (CONFIG_NO_PAGE_MAPCOUNT)
Everything is in place to stop using the per-page mapcounts in large
folios: the mapcount of tail pages will always be logically 0 (-1 value),
just like it currently is for hugetlb folios already, and the page
mapcount of the head page is either 0 (-1 value) or contains a page type
(e.g., hugetlb).
Maintaining _nr_pages_mapped without per-page mapcounts is impossible, so
that one also has to go with CONFIG_NO_PAGE_MAPCOUNT.
There are two remaining implications:
(1) Per-node, per-cgroup and per-lruvec stats of "NR_ANON_MAPPED"
("mapped anonymous memory") and "NR_FILE_MAPPED"
("mapped file memory"):
As soon as any page of the folio is mapped -- folio_mapped() -- we
now account the complete folio as mapped. Once the last page is
unmapped -- !folio_mapped() -- we account the complete folio as
unmapped.
This implies that ...
* "AnonPages" and "Mapped" in /proc/meminfo and
/sys/devices/system/node/*/meminfo
* cgroup v2: "anon" and "file_mapped" in "memory.stat" and
"memory.numa_stat"
* cgroup v1: "rss" and "mapped_file" in "memory.stat" and
"memory.numa_stat
... can now appear higher than before. But note that these folios do
consume that memory, simply not all pages are actually currently
mapped.
It's worth nothing that other accounting in the kernel (esp. cgroup
charging on allocation) is not affected by this change.
[why oh why is "anon" called "rss" in cgroup v1]
(2) Detecting partial mappings
Detecting whether anon THPs are partially mapped gets a bit more
unreliable. As long as a single MM maps such a large folio
("exclusively mapped"), we can reliably detect it. Especially before
fork() / after a short-lived child process quit, we will detect
partial mappings reliably, which is the common case.
In essence, if the average per-page mapcount in an anon THP is < 1,
we know for sure that we have a partial mapping.
However, as soon as multiple MMs are involved, we might miss detecting
partial mappings: this might be relevant with long-lived child
processes. If we have a fully-mapped anon folio before fork(), once
our child processes and our parent all unmap (zap/COW) the same pages
(but not the complete folio), we might not detect the partial mapping.
However, once the child processes quit we would detect the partial
mapping.
How relevant this case is in practice remains to be seen.
Swapout/migration will likely mitigate this.
In the future, RMAP walkers could check for that for that case
(e.g., when collecting access bits during reclaim) and simply flag
them for deferred-splitting.

mm: Add transformation message for per-memcg swappiness
The concept of per-memcg swappiness has never landed well in memcg for cgroup v2. Add a message to users who use it on v1 hierarchy. Decreased swappiness transforms to memory.swap.max=0 whereas increased swappiness transforms into active memory.reclaim operation. memcg-v1: fully deprecate move_charge_at_immigrate
Patch series "memcg-v1: fully deprecate charge moving". The memcg v1's charge moving feature has been deprecated for almost 2 years and the kernel warns if someone try to use it. This warning has been backported to all stable kernel and there have not been any report of the warning or the request to support this feature anymore. Let's proceed to fully deprecate this feature. This patch (of 6): Proceed with the complete deprecation of memcg v1's charge moving feature. The deprecation warning has been in the kernel for almost two years and has been ported to all stable kernel since. Now is the time to fully deprecate this feature. memcg: initiate deprecation of pressure_level
The pressure_level in memcg v1 provides memory pressure notifications to the user space. At the moment it provides notifications for three levels of memory pressure i.e. low, medium and critical, which are defined based on internal memory reclaim implementation details. More specifically the ratio of scanned and reclaimed pages during a memory reclaim. However this is not robust as there are workloads with mostly unreclaimable user memory or kernel memory. For v2, the users can use PSI for memory pressure status of the system or the cgroup. Let's start the deprecation process for pressure_level and add warnings to gather the info on how the current users are using this interface and how they can be used to PSI. memcg: initiate deprecation of oom_control
The oom_control provides functionality to disable memcg oom-killer, notifications on oom-kill and reading the stats regarding oom-kills. This interface was mainly introduced to provide functionality for userspace oom-killers. However it is not robust enough and only supports OOM handling in the page fault path. For v2, the users can use the combination of memory.events notifications, memory.high and PSI to provide userspace OOM-killing functionality. Actually LMKD in Android and OOMd in systemd and Meta infrastructure already use PSI in combination with other stats to implement userspace OOM-killing. Let's start the deprecation process for v1 and gather the info on how the current users are using this interface and work on providing a more robust functionality in v2. Memcg v1 provides soft limit functionality for the best effort memory sharing between multiple workloads on a system. It is usually triggered through kswapd and at the moment does not reclaim kernel memory. Memcg v2 provides more straightforward best effort (memory.low) and hard protection (memory.min) functionalities. For now add the warnings to collect the information on how the current users are using these features. mm: memcontrol: deprecate charge moving
Charge moving mode in cgroup1 allows memory to follow tasks as they migrate between cgroups. This is, and always has been, a questionable thing to do - for several reasons. First, it's expensive. Pages need to be identified, locked and isolated from various MM operations, and reassigned, one by one. Second, it's unreliable. Once pages are charged to a cgroup, there isn't always a clear owner task anymore. Cache isn't moved at all, for example. Mapped memory is moved - but if trylocking or isolating a page fails, it's arbitrarily left behind. Frequent moving between domains may leave a task's memory scattered all over the place. Third, it isn't really needed. Launcher tasks can kick off workload tasks directly in their target cgroup. Using dedicated per-workload groups allows fine-grained policy adjustments - no need to move tasks and their physical pages between control domains. The feature was never forward-ported to cgroup2, and it hasn't been missed. Despite it being a niche usecase, the maintenance overhead of supporting it is enormous. Because pages are moved while they are live and subject to various MM operations, the synchronization rules are complicated. There are lock_page_memcg() in MM and FS code, which non-cgroup people don't understand. In some cases we've been able to shift code and cgroup API calls around such that we can rely on native locking as much as possible. But that's fragile, and sometimes we need to hold MM locks for longer than we otherwise would (pte lock e.g.). Mark the feature deprecated. Hopefully we can remove it soon. And backport into -stable kernels so that people who develop against earlier kernels are warned about this deprecation as early as possible. mm/memcg: disable threshold event handlers on PREEMPT_RT
During the integration of PREEMPT_RT support, the code flow around memcg_check_events() resulted in `twisted code'. Moving the code around and avoiding then would then lead to an additional local-irq-save section within memcg_check_events(). While looking better, it adds a local-irq-save section to code flow which is usually within an local-irq-off block on non-PREEMPT_RT configurations. The threshold event handler is a deprecated memcg v1 feature. Instead of trying to get it to work under PREEMPT_RT just disable it. There should be no users on PREEMPT_RT. From that perspective it makes even less sense to get it to work under PREEMPT_RT while having zero users. Make memory.soft_limit_in_bytes and cgroup.event_control return -EOPNOTSUPP on PREEMPT_RT. Make an empty memcg_check_events() and memcg_write_event_control() which return only -EOPNOTSUPP on PREEMPT_RT. Document that the two knobs are disabled on PREEMPT_RT. Also fixed some zone->lru_lock comment error from ancient time. etc. I struggled to understand the comment above move_pages_to_lru() (surely it never calls page_referenced()), and eventually realized that most of it had got separated from shrink_active_list(): move that comment back. memcg, kmem: deprecate kmem.limit_in_bytes
Cgroup v1 memcg controller has exposed a dedicated kmem limit to users which turned out to be really a bad idea because there are paths which cannot shrink the kernel memory usage enough to get below the limit (e.g. because the accounted memory is not reclaimable). There are cases when the failure is even not allowed (e.g. __GFP_NOFAIL). This means that the kmem limit is in excess to the hard limit without any way to shrink and thus completely useless. OOM killer cannot be invoked to handle the situation because that would lead to a premature oom killing. As a result many places might see ENOMEM returning from kmalloc and result in unexpected errors. E.g. a global OOM killer when there is a lot of free memory because ENOMEM is translated into VM_FAULT_OOM in #PF path and therefore pagefault_out_of_memory would result in OOM killer. Please note that the kernel memory is still accounted to the overall limit along with the user memory so removing the kmem specific limit should still allow to contain kernel memory consumption. Unlike the kmem one, though, it invokes memory reclaim and targeted memcg oom killing if necessary. Start the deprecation process by crying to the kernel log. Let's see whether there are relevant usecases and simply return to EINVAL in the second stage if nobody complains in few releases.
